A Trail Blazing Service To Our Community

Whether you are a mountain biker, an avid trail runner, or just enjoy a leisurely walk out in nature, I am sure many of you have experienced the beautiful trails our local forests have to offer. BUT, have you ever stopped for a minute and wondered who actually maintains the fabulous trail networks we have in our region. Well, may I introduce you to community group extraordinaire, The Northside Trail Care Alliance (NTCA) which is part of the North Brisbane Mountain Bike Club ‘Dirt Dogs’.The club formed the NTCA as a service to the wider community. The NTCA works in collaboration with the land manager Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) to maintain the MTB trail networks in Bunyaville and Samford Conservation parks and is done on a 100% volunteer basis. Funding comes from the Dirt Dogs Club and public donations for the day to day trail maintenance. Furthermore, the club applies for grants to deliver larger projects such as the additional trails that have been built in Samford Conservation park in the last three years. As you may have noticed, our local trails have received a huge pummeling in recent months with the torrential rains and flooding, resulting in massive amounts of manual work carried out by these volunteers to restore the trails to their former glory. As Ben Malatzky from NTCA explains, the club have been lucky enough to have had the ability to access the trails to get on top of the damage. ‘QPWS have been very effective in arranging for us to have access to audit and repair the trails after the weather event, many other trail networks have not been able to start volunteer work. The community response to get these trails back up and running has been fantastic,’ said Ben.

Some heavy lifting from volunteers to restore the damaged trails in pouring rain at Bunyaville Conservation Park ’It is worth noting that this will have an economic return for the area, bringing a larger than normal number of riders from all around to the local area as most other trail centers are closed. The network has had an above average visitation since reopening, likely to increase during the Easter school holiday period,’ So from the whole team at Echo News and the wider community, we would like to thank you NTCA for your extensive work and contribution to the beloved trails we are lucky enough to have in our region. New Choir Sings Out For Mental Health

Upbeat Arts Absolutely Everybody Brisbane Choir

Creative arts organisation Upbeat Arts will expand its operations to north Brisbane (Wavell Heights) this month, launching a new choir aimed at providing connection to those with mental health challenges.

With funding from Queensland Health, Upbeat Arts’ successful creative arts programs provide a unique form of ‘social prescribing’ for any adults who are disadvantaged as a result of their mental health challenges. Social prescribing is the referral of patients to non-medical activities. Upbeat Arts has been a leader in this area since it began its operations with its first choir in South Brisbane in 2014. Queensland Mental Health Commissioner Ivan Frkovic said he was delighted to officially launch the new North Brisbane Absolutely Everybody Choir. ‘Upbeat Arts programs foster a safe, uplifting and fun

environment and provide an opportunity for social inclusion, connection and building confidence,’ Ivan said. COVID-19 had exacerbated the loneliness of those with mental health conditions, increasing the appeal and importance of the new north Brisbane choir. The original choir, the Absolutely Everybody Brisbane Choir, has helped around 400 people to transform or improve their lives since its establishment eight years ago. The teaching staff are qualified professionals who use their education and mental health skills to achieve measurable results for choir members. Previous experience is not needed to join the choir and there are no auditions. For further information, contact Upbeat Arts Operations Manager - Queensland Susan Gilmartin on 0417 075 053 or susan.gilmartin@upbeatarts.org.au

A Joyous Start to the Year for Keperra Golf Clubs Juniors

Juniors from Keperra Country Golf Club who are part of the club’s junior development program have enjoyed a successful start to 2022.

At the end of March, Wesley Hinton took out the Queensland's Men's Foursomes Championship for amateurs, alongside playing partner Alfie Ward (Maroochy River). The pair shot even par over two rounds at the Wynnum course to hold off the competition by two shots. Wesley’s victory came after a strong performance in January at the Junior Golf Queensland Summer Classic at Mount Coolum where he was Gross Runner Up in Boy's Division 1. Fellow Keperra junior Jack Jones took out the Gross Runner Up in the Boy's Division 2 category. January saw two-time Keperra Ladies Club Champion Caitlin Vanderkruk win the Bribie Island Junior Open championship for girls, with an excellent sub-par round of 72. The win qualified Caitlin for The Invincibles 2022 IGA Sunshine Coast Junior Masters Championship to be held in September. Caitlin has her sights set on furthering her golf career through the American College system, a path that fellow Keperra club member Emily Mahar has taken. Emily moved to the US and studied first at girls’ golf powerhouse Xavier College Preparatory in Phoenix and now Virginia Tech. She made her professional tournament debut in June last year after qualifying for the 76th US Women’s Open in California, the biggest tournament in women’s golf in the world, and this year made her first appearance in the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

A few of the talented Junior members at Keperra Golf Club

Ranked at 45 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, she was a late call-up to join the 72-strong Augusta field and missed the cut for the final round by only two shots. But there was a huge bonus. After the lifting of international travel restrictions her parents James and Katie were able to jump on a plane to the US to see her in action, the first time in more than two years since the pandemic began that Emily was able to see her family.

A ‘Food Garden’

After last year’s first Samford Edible Garden Trail was a sold out success, the organising committee knew that this year would have to be bigger and better than ever!

After all, last year’s trail had a last minute surprise arrival on the day, with Costa Georgiadis from ABC’s Gardening Australia flying up from Sydney that morning to light up the faces of young and old by sharing his contagious passion of gardening with visitors, locals and to his own audience nationally with live feeds all day. It’s no wonder then, the garden trail has had more locals step forward to offer even MORE diverse food gardens to open to the public this year. If you weren’t familiar with The Samford Edible Garden Trail, it all started out in 2020, where a group of local mums created the concept of locals opening to the public their amazing backyard edible gardens and how to grow food and share this knowledge with the community. So, with lockdowns putting things on hold, they started filming and sharing online instead, and the concept caught on not only locally, but also nationally and internationally. So much so that in 2021 the first live trail was held. Fast forward to May 2022, the group are still filming and posting their virtual tours online, AND are getting ready to open the doors to now 13 inspiring diverse edible gardens and small scale farms for the inaugural Open Day Weekend that will span over 2 days on May 14 and 15 this year. But there is MORE to the Trail than just the 13 diverse gardens on show. For people wanting to take some of the gardens home with them, Milen farm, a local urban community farm, will be hosting a farmer’s market, and open up an area to picnic among the produce with pre-paid hampers, rugs, a busker, and kids activities. There will also be an art exhibition featuring local artists in the community HUB at Samford and local cafes, and restaurants will be getting on board too and connecting with local farmers to offer a special menu item created from local produce. Whats more, the famous Samford Patisserie will be enticing ticket holders to sample their goods by offering ticket holders a complimentary coffee. Don‘t forget too to grab a tour of the gardens, and watch live demonstrations from garden hosts with surprise guests on the days! Details and ticketing information: Ticket sales for the 2 day Event on Saturday and Sunday May 14th & 15th, running from 9am-3pm can be found at https://events.humanitix.com/samford-edible-garden-trail2022-open-day With the purchase of a ticket, attendees will be sent a local map of where to begin the trail. Pricing: One Day $10, or $15 for a two day adult pass. Kids visit Free. The Eatons Echo, May 2022 - Page 13

The Echo of EchoEcho

Now that’s a punny headline…

EchoEcho, a local rock & roll band from our neighbourhood in Brisbane, is set to get rolling again after two years of COVID restrictions. Birthed from mateship and a mutual love of soulful music, EchoEcho is a 5-piece Pub Rock cover band, comprised of Pat Tiley (Lead Vocals, Guitar, Percussion), Nev Sonter (Rhythm Guitar, Harmonica), Erik van de Neut (Drums), Jon Gadsby (Lead Guitar, Keyboard), and Michael Onn (Bass). From coast to country to city, these fellas take on gigs all across South East Queensland—mainly in Brisbane Northside. They perform at pubs, clubs, fetes, private parties, weddings, corp events, and whatever else is thrown at them! On the 23rd April, the band’s first gig since COVID took place at Bonnyview Hotel in Bald Hills and what an event it was! They are also thrilled to be rocking Tin Can Bay Country Club on 8th July from 7pm, so pop along to the event, grab a meal at the bar or restaurant and settle in with a coldie and some sick tunes! If you’re interested in hooking the blokes up with another gig, or are keen to get more info, check out their Facebook @EchoEchoCoverBand, or call Nev on 0419 939 719. Local Ladies Serving Snags for Kids in Need

An update from the Brendale VIEW Evening Club All hands were on board at the Brendale Bunnings Sausage Sizzle last month. Once again our ladies came together and rose to the challenge in order to help and support this very successful fundraising day. It started with perfect weather as the VIEW ladies came along, armed with aprons in hand, and smiles on their faces, ready to serve the hundreds of ravenous Bunnings Customers. We buttered the bread, BBQ’ed the sausages, and placed the drinks on ice. The hungry customers were not disappointed with the ladies BBQing skills. This Sausage Sizzle is one of many fundraising activities the Brendale View Club has organized for this year. The club sponsors eight Learning for Life students and members fundraise throughout the year to make certain these children have financial support and can access the services needed to succeed in their life journey. Throughout the year we keep in contact with the students through letters and birthday cards. This gives them the support and the knowledge that we are there for them. The VIEW CLUB (Voice, Interests & Education of Women) is the largest community sponsor of The Smith Family's ‘Learning for Life’ program, which provides long-term education support for children and young people in need. VIEW has raised more than $40 million and members today sponsor more than 1500 of the program's students. Our club has a commitment to have fun and nurture friendships. It is a place where you can meet new friends, enjoy a two

Brendale Evening Club ladies at the Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings course meal, listen to an informative guest speaker, and attend additional social activities such as an annual Fashion Parade. Recently some of our members have enjoyed lunch and a tour of Parliament House. There is also a regular coffee morning on the first Saturday of each month. We would welcome you to come along to one of our dinner meetings as a visitor to see if VIEW is for you. Dinner meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month arriving at 6.30pm for a 7pm start at Aspley Hornets Football Club, 50 Graham Rd, Carseldine. Come give us a try – we’d love to meet you! The Echo Gecko A Civilised War? A monthly column from columnist Richard Lancaster

With a terrible war now being waged in Ukraine and the apparent cruel futility of it, I recently allowed myself to ask the question ‘Can war ever become civilised’

Before I had a chance to determine the answer, I recollected asking that same question of my history teacher, many years ago. The question obviously came out of left field for him, as he looked at me with a withering stare that suggested that he thought my question foolish or at best inappropriate, which was no doubt was fuelled by laughing from several of the class. “War can never be classed as civilised!” was his immediate dismissive response. I had not meant the question to be funny or foolish, as my query had arisen from an observation I had made involving that devastatingly destructive battle that happened in Belgium in June 1815. Yes, that’s it- the famous Battle of Waterloo, in which Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte lost his crown and the French army was totally decimated. They started off with 72,000 troops, with the combined Allied forces under the Duke of Wellington, numbering 68,000 men. The battle lasted just nine hours and in that time, a frightening carnage that cost the lives of 31,000 Frenchmen and 20,000 allied troops, occurred. But it wasn’t enough that over 50,000 young men, the flower of Europe had died on that day, but its what happened to their bodies that made a 17 year old school boy ask that question. Within a few weeks of the battle ending, the Waterloo site became a major tourist attraction for thousands of souvenir

hunters, especially from Britain. The fledging dentistry industry suddenly realised the value of the thousands of corpses and their teeth. The battlefield became rich pickings for teeth which were subsequently made into false teeth for the wealthy. These became known as `Waterloo teeth`. A few years thereafter, the Waterloo fields again became the picking grounds for another group of business entrepreneurs. The by then picked clean bones of the 50,000 soldiers and the countless dead horses were loaded onto ships and sent to various destinations, where they were ground up and made into fertilizer. Nowadays, in every city, town and village in the western world, plinths stand proudly extolling those brave souls, who fought and died in the Boer War, the 1st and 2nd World Wars and the latter subsequent conflicts thereafter . There are over 4000 cemeteries dotted around the world, holding the remains of those who died in World War 1. There are 36 pages of cemeteries listed for the World War 2 dead. Thank heavens, none of those brave soldiers have suffered the indignity of losing their teeth to someone else’s mouth or their skeletons becoming fertilizer for some farming activity. I wonder if my history master had allowed my question to be properly considered, would his dismissal of it have been different to the one he gave?

Socialising in Retirement

Forming social connections during retirement is important, as it provides a sense of friendship and support for retirees.

Healthy relationships are necessary at every age, but the importance of socialising for retirees cannot be overemphasised. Regular social interactions can help keep retirees mentally, physically and emotionally healthy, whilst fending off difficulties inherent to loneliness. Joining a social Club like Probus provides retirees the opportunity to socialise with likeminded people in their local communities. There are over 1,500 Probus Clubs across Australia and New Zealand. There are also many ways that socialising can help improve both our cognitive and physical health. These include: Reduced stress. Retirees who are socially active tend to handle stress better. This leads to improving their cardiovascular health and immune system. Longer lifespan. High levels of socialising can help increase longevity. More fitness. Retirees with diverse social connections are more likely to exercise regularly. This can lead to a myriad of physical, mental and cognitive benefits. Reduced risk of depression. Consistent socialising reduces the likelihood of retirees experiencing depression caused by loneliness. Less anxiety. Similar to depression, retirees who socialise more experience less symptoms of anxiety.

www.echo-news.com.au

Greater self-esteem. Socialising helps retirees be better engaged, growing their confidence and sense of worth. As these health benefits contribute towards significantly improving the quality of life for many retirees, it is important to find an appropriate way of maintaining a healthy social life. The good news is that Probus is starting a new Probus Club in the Arana Hills District and we extend you a welcome to come and experience this club! Find out more about the new Arana Hills District Probus Club by calling Barbara on 0402 850 367 or Merv Richens on 0420 373 162. Visit www.paqnetwork.com.au for more details.

Innovative early learning college set to launch in Petrie

The Petrie Early Learning College by Adam and Noah is a new state-of-the-art education centre set to launch in Petrie in July 2022.

Adam and Noah Early Learning College, which has been operating since 2014 in Heritage Park, provides children with a head start in life through an innovative approach to early learning and education. The new model of childcare was designed to nurture children’s development and cater to the individual needs of students and families. Students attending the Petrie campus will also benefit from weekly excursions to the Adam and Noah centre in Heritage Park. All meals will be provided by in-house chefs including breakfast, morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea and snacks. Adam and Noah Early Learning College founder Georgiana Karam said families in Petrie who would like to learn more about the Adam and Noah Early Learning College are invited to attend an open day in Heritage Park on May 21 from 9am am to 3pm. ‘We’re going to have live music, a sausage sizzle, a petting zoo, face painting, a jumping castle and more,’ she said. The open day will provide parents and children with the opportunity to meet with staff and tour the facilities at Heritage Park, which includes a junior cafe, a computer lab, parents lounge, indoor sports court, outdoor sports court, and a theatre stage. The Heritage Park campus is home to an ‘Outdoor Advertureland’ which includes a City Adventureland, Ancient and Archaeological World Adventure with pyramids, fossil digging, and dinosaurs, two sports areas, an animal and vegetable farm, and a shaded picnic area. They also have an on-site indoor play area called ‘The Fun Spaceship,’ which includes an indoor playground, climb-in UFO and rockets, rock climbing and soft play equipment. Georgiana said the early learning college’s advanced curriculum was designed to educate students to the same standard as a year two student upon graduation. ‘That’s what makes us unique; we are not babysitting children, we are educating them,’she said. The academic curriculum covers language, maths, science, health, safety, social skills, arts, cooking, engineering, computers, drama, acting, poetry, singing, puppetry, music, and sports including soccer, basketball, athletics, gymnastics, and badminton. Georgiana built Adam and Noah Early Learning College because she recognised a gap in early education for children and wanted to create better learning opportunities for them. Named after her two boys, Adam and Noah was designed to provide a holistic approach integrated through routines, activities, open-ended exploration and play and meaningful relationships. The Open Day will be held at 130 Waller Road in Heritage Park, 4118. For more information, visit the Adam and Noah Early Learning Centre website at https://anelc.com.au/ or contact 07 3054 1054. Your Accountant can be your trusted business partner helping pinpoint business structure and growth opportunities. “While increasing revenue is the goal for some businesses, for others success is having the right business structure in place, a clear strategy for paying wages and superannuation (including to the business owner) and protecting your assets,” Jordan suggests. Educating and empowering established business owners is at the heart of their Brendale based accounting firm. Dream Financing works closely with female-led

It’s All About Art in Aspley

Calling all creatives! Did you know we have a local art group right on our doorstep that has been around for almost 50 years?!

The Aspley Art Group (AAG) has a long history after being founded in 1973. Its members are all talented local artists who work in a range of styles and mediums which include oils, acrylics, watercolours, pastels as well as pen and ink and a variety of sketching mediums. The group regularly enjoy showcasing their art at local shopping centres, as well as other venues when available, such as an annual exhibition at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital. The AAG donates regularly to the RBWH Research Foundation and the annual show adds additional funds from a percentage of all paintings sold. Tutorials are arranged at intervals throughout the year, providing opportunity for artists to try out new ideas and skills. And painting together after monthly meetings is often on the agenda. New members are always welcome! More information about membership and the group’s activities and artists is available on the AAG website (www.aspleyartgroup.org) or contact infor@aspleyartgroup.org. Members derive great pleasure in producing their art and hope they can provide enjoyment for others. That is their greatest reward. All art displayed at the Groups’ Shows or Exhibitions is for sale, that is shown in the advertisement on the right.

Good Reef!News It’s Curtin’s for Clunkers. & Views from a Tramway Muse

Have you ever wondered where all those clapped-out clunkers and bald tyres go? Or the beaten-up boats and rust-bucket barges that have passed their use-by date? Well, you may be surprised to hear that hundreds of old car bodies, more than 20,000 spent tyres, and dozens of rusty boats have been dumped into Moreton Bay over the years; and it was all done with the blessing of successive State Governments. Curtin Artificial Reef is located just offshore of Cowan Cowan, a humble hamlet on beautiful Moreton Island. It's one of several artificial reefs created for recreational purposes - fishing and scuba diving. The clutter of old clunkers was followed by hundreds of abandoned shopping trolleys, navigation buoys, over 1000 tonnes of concrete pipes, a huge dry-dock gate, and even a historic Brisbane tram that was dropped from a Chinook helicopter in 1981! Brisbane trams only come in two sizes: big ones and whoppers. FM Tram 502 was a true whopper, still weighing a thumping 8-tonnes even after the heavy under-carriage was removed. Fortunately, the RAAF Chinook was a whopper chopper in its day and it managed to deliver the discarded people parcel without any collateral damage along the way. Tram 502 made quite a splash on her watery debut, but it was all over in seconds. The old lady quickly disappeared to join a long line of decrepit shipwrecks and crumpled clunkers that litter the sea floor. Divers recovered the lifting straps soon after the drop and they reported that a large groper had already claimed the driver's cab! The old lady has lost some weight over the years as she gently decomposes between a brace of ancient whaling boats. You'll need full scuba diving gear if you want to climb aboard today, but if that sounds too challenging, you can visit 502's cousins at Ferny Grove. Crabs and lobsters may be in short supply, but the museum has plenty of bottled water. And if that sounds a tad lame, you can take your own bubbles and a pair of floppy rubber flippers to boot........

War Chronicles from Our Veterans

Lest We Forget! These simple words are spoken at ANZAC Day Commemorations every year. But how do we ensure that, as a nation, we don’t forget the sacrifices of these ordinary men and women whose actions and experiences were extraordinary? This Story Australia is a charity dedicated to capturing and preserving the significant moments of Australia’s history, as told by those who experienced it first-hand via high-quality video documentaries.

History

In collaboration with This Story, Echo News is delighted to bring you the third edition of our monthly segment that showcases just a few of the veterans whose full stories can be found on This Story's YouTube page (link available from thisstory.com.au). If you are a veteran and would like to share your story, This Story would love to hear from you! Email jeff@thisstory. com.au or call 0439 661 448

Corporal Leslee Tannock

WW2 Veteran Corporal | Women’s Auxilary Australian Airforce (WAAAF) Air Force

Leslee Tannock was born in Brisbane in November 1923. She joined the WAAAF in signals after learning morse code at the tender age of 15. After initial training in Victoria, Leslee was stationed in Maryborough during the war, and had fond memories of the quaint Queensland town. Sadly Leslee passed away just a mere six weeks after filming her interview, on ANZAC Day 2019.

Corporal Eric John Law

Vietnam Veteran | Royal Australian Army

Eric was born in Cherbourg in 1951 and carried on the family tradition after his father served in WWI. Eric was among some good mates from the area that all went to Vietnam including Claude Malone and Peter Hegarty. Eric has some pretty strong memories of returning to Australia after Vietnam and being refused a beer in the local RSL, despite walking in with his veteran father. Eric vowed to not step foot in an RSL again, but currently is the only Indigenous Vice President of an RSL Sub-branch in Queensland. Eric says "time changes things."

Sergeant David Parker

Afghanistan Veteran | Private, The Australian Army

David was born in Warrnambool Victoria in 1979 and joined the Army on the advice from his brother. David's most poignant memory from his time in service was whilst on deployment to Timor when he and a group of mates watched the 911 attacks live on CNN. David remarks "from that moment on I knew life in the army was going to be different." David went on to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan and now operates his own business in Illawarra NSW called 'Past Outdoors.'

As previously mentioned, This Story is a not-for-profit charity. Their high quality documentaries are offered online 100% free of charge to the public and allow all Australians to develop a deeper understanding of some of Australian history’s most significant events. If you would like to offer support, donations can be made online at https://thisstory.com.au/donate/. Any amount - large or small - will go towards the cost of producing these historical documentaries. The Pulse Pet Column

Welcome to a monthly column brought to you by the experienced veterinary team at Pulse Vets Warner. This month the team talk about Heartworm.

A Silent Killer

You’re in my heart, you’re in my soul.

Heartworm, the silent worm which can cause a family to become heartbroken. Many of our canine friends are diagnosed with heartworm each year. In recent times it has also been discovered that our feline friends are just as at risk. Contracting heartworm is extremely easy, all it takes is one mosquito bite, and the animal not to be on heartworm prevention. Your pet may show you symptoms, if left untreated your family member will have a slow agonising death. Heartworm is a mosquito born parasite which lodges in the heart causing major irreversible problems. When a mozzie bites an infected animal it picks up immature heartworm from the bloodstream. After the following fortnight the immature heartworms develop into infective larvae inside the mosquito. When the mozzie feeds again it will transmit the infective larvae into the skin. The larvae will penetrate the skin and develop within the tissues. The young worm then begins its two to four months migration, to the heart where it will live

for several years. Adult worms have the capacity to grow to 30cm long and live in the heart and main blood vessels of the lungs. Once the worm is sexually mature the vicious cycle starts again. Initially there are no symptoms, once the signs develop the heartworm have been there for some time, and the heart and lungs are weakened. The first signs may be: persistant coughing, laboured breathing, tiring easily when exercised, lethargy (lazy), distended abdomen, chronic lung disease, vomiting. Untreated heartworm progresses to right side heart failure, fluid in the abdomen, respiratory difficulties, weakness and eventually death. But cats may not show any signs at all. Our canine friends are 10 times more likely to contract this disease than cats. Only a blood test from your veterinarian will determine whether your pet is infected. If your pet ends up being infected there is treatment available. Medication will kill the worms, however it may take up to a whole month before the body breaks it down. The dead worms can make your pet quite sick and careful nursing is required. The whole process is very dramatic for “rover” and expensive for owner. Prevention is always better and cheaper than cure so its best to begin heartworm at 8 weeks of age. Monthly prevention or yearly injections are available and recommended from your local vet.

Adopt! Don't Shop! Pooch of the Month

Pets

IWaG welcomed the Lismore trio to the family in April which consists of one male hound, Teddy, and two female hounds, Lexi and Melanie.

As many of our community knows and have experienced themselves, South East Queensland and the Northern Rivers of NSW were sadly heavily affected by flash flooding. During this time, all three hounds were displaced as a result of the rising floodwaters and aftermath. Both properties that the hounds came from have never been affected by such wild weather events and unfortunately this time both properties were hit hard. The three beautiful hounds - Lexi, Melanie and Teddy - have all been settling into pet life and enjoying their new environments. Lexi and Melanie are currently in the same foster home enjoying each other’s company. While the girls are flourishing in their foster home, they are looking for their forever home. Melanie is the adventurous little sister who likes to see how cheeky she can get. She loves bringing her foster mum’s crocs right to the middle of the living room because she is convinced that’s where they belong. Melanie loves snuggles and doesn’t know her size, so likes to squeeze her way through to sit next to her foster parents and rest her head on them. Lexi is the collected older sister who likes to just sit and watch while her taller foster sister counter-surfs or plays with toys but the girl lights up when the hose is turned on and would chase the water to her hearts’ content. She is also obsessed with belly rubs and would turn to her belly whenever anyone comes close to her asking for more! Teddy is known for his beautiful eyes and captivating ears. This gentle giant is a calm and quiet boy who adores his

cuddles from his foster family. Teddy and his foster family are enjoying their walks together and love to laugh every time he roaches and makes happy snorting noises. Don’t be fooled though, this clever boy is food driven and likes to remind his family when dinner time is. Dickson News Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson

We’ve been through a lot together in the past couple of years. Our community has faced the difficulties of pandemic and devastating flooding. But through this adversity, we’ve seen the community come together to support one another in times of need. We are now rebuilding our economy and our local community. Australia’s post-COVID recovery has been among the strongest in the world and unemployment is nearing a 50-year low of below 4%. This election will have real consequences for Australia’s economy – and our local community. Now is not the time to risk our economic recovery and national security with Labor. With growing global threats and uncertainty, the Morrison Government has strengthened our Defence Force by making the largest investment and expansion of the ADF during peacetime - to keep Australia safe. To build a stronger future we are: • Delivering even more high-skilled, well-paying jobs. • Delivering lower taxes for workers and small businesses.

• Reducing your cost of living to make it easier to pay household bills. • Making record investments in health and education. • Investing in the roads, rail, bridges, and dams Australia needs. Locally, we are building more commuter car parks at Ferny Grove train station, flood proofing Youngs Crossing, rolling out the next stages of the new university at Petrie Mill creating thousands of jobs and delivering better roads. We are also upgrading community facilities like our PCYCs and many of our parks are being renewed. The alternative is Anthony Albanese and Labor with their higher taxes, higher unemployment, and cuts to our Defence Force and national security. We can’t risk our recovery with Labor. With your support, the Liberal National team will continue our plan for a strong economy and a stronger future.

An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club Inc

The Gem Club Workshop is open for inspection by anybody who may wish to become a member or just see how we do cutting and polishing of Gemstones.

We are open from 9am- 12noon on a Thursday morning for Lapidary work and 12 Noon to 3pm for Silverwork enthusiasts. We also have a Saturday afternoon session for Lapidary from 1pm to 4pm. Our Clubrooms are situated at 40-46 Ferneydell St Ashgrove. The centre point of our workshop is our Diamond saws. We have seven Diamond Saws of various blade diameters from 4 inches to 24 inches. These saws are used for cutting faceting material into smaller pieces (4 inch saw) to the 24 inch saw which is used to break down large pieces of Gemstone material, such as Petrified Wood, Rhodonite and Jasper. Once these pieces are broken down on the 24 inch saw they can be cut into slabs on the 12 inch and 14 inch saws. These ‘slabs’ generally, around 1 cm in width, are used to be made into Cabochons or Free Forms. They are finally trimmed to shape on the 10 inch “trim” saw we have. This saw runs in a mixture of a cutting fluid which is mixed 10 to 1 with water. The larger saws 24 inch down to 12 inch, generally are lubricated in mineral oil to keep the blade cool and flush out the saw cuts. The oil has to be changed a couple of times a year, when the “mud” builds up in the sump of the saw. When changed, the oil is left to stand and settle and can be re-used again later on. If you require any more information about the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club Inc. please contact John on 33511038. New members are always welcome.

Giving our youngest citizens a big voice News Report

A New Member At Our School!

Written by Sanni, Sibella, Evie, and Sarah, students at St Williams School Grovely There’s a new member in our school! His name is Hugo. Surprisingly, he’s not a student or staff member; he’s a therapy dog! He’s a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel crossed with a Poodle - a Cavoodle who is very well trained by our Guidance Councillor, Mr Bird. He brought Hugo to St William’s School at the start of this year. All the students adore him and love seeing him do all the tricks he’s been taught by his beloved owner. Hugo meets with us every Tuesday. If you’re stressed, worried or sad you can go and see Mr Bird and Hugo. Hugo is so cute and cuddly that all your worries will instantly disappear. Hugo is still a puppy and is very energetic, so Mr Bird takes him on a walk every morning before they come to school. In our opinion we think that Hugo as the therapy dog is a huge success at St William’s School. Mr Bird thinks that Hugo here at St William’s is helpful and brightens people’s day. He also thinks that Hugo is really good for our mood and health. Hugo loves exercise so if people find it hard to sit still and pay attention in class, they can even go for a run with Hugo. Hugo also helps teach students their social skills. We love that Mr Bird has brought Hugo to our school!

Rosella Jam Is Ripening To Go! An update from the Hills Organic Community Garden

Our members are working hard getting the beds ready for planting and looking forward to sewing some seedlings. This is the start of a busy time at the garden keeping the new plants well watered and free of weeds. However, the end result is a wonderful crop of fresh vegetables. The Rosellas are just starting to fruit and bottles of Rosella jam are being shared amongst our members. Rosella jam is always in demand as you can’t usually purchase it at the supermarkets. Our Napoli squash are still producing well, and of course our chillies and sweet potatoes are serving us well. At the moment the herb garden has flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), thyme, tarragon, mother of herbs and garlic chives. Let’s not forget the passionfruit that are well fruited and hopefully we will be able to enjoy them before the cockatoos discover them! Some vegetables are best grown from seed to avoid transplant shock. Examples of these are; carrots, peas, beans and radish that are best grown from seed but must be thinned out to allow enough space to grow and mature. Snow peas, beetroot, silver beet, baby spinach and tomatoes will be on our list of plantings and we look forward to getting them into the ground and watching them grow and mature. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier - so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Our members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm. As well, they attend to the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya, next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980 for information.

90 Years Young & Still Going Strong

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club During the Christmas-New Year recess, a foundation member of the Mitchelton & Districts Garden club, Berenice Corvi, had her 90th birthday, making three club members over this age.

At the April meeting, on behalf of the club, Margaret Morrow, the club patron, presented Berenice (Bernie) with a floral arrangement of chrysanthemums and carnations. Despite the bad weather beforehand, club members’ show bench entries were commendable. Hedi Marshall received the ‘Champion Award’ for a magnificent potted flowering orchid. May is the last month of Autumn. Already when the sun is not shining there’s a chill in the air. Sub-tropical and temperate climate indoor plants would benefit from being placed outside at night a few times. If you are considering planting fruit trees, nurseries have new stock available. A well drained sunny position with lots of organic material in the soil is required. For areas where space is limited, dwarf fruit trees will cater for your needs. Given correct conditions they will grow and produce successfully in large containers. Azalea growers will Bernice with her 90th notice buds getting Birthday Cake fatter for flowering in spring. If the buds are turning brown or dropping, this could indicate petal blight fungus. You should be able to control this if fungicide applications begin straight away. Have you noticed about dusk, the intensity of mosquito attacks? Mosquitoes transmit disease, so always protect yourself from bites by using an insect repellent or covering your bare skin. Check no water is in vessels in your yard, e.g. pot plant saucers, or forgotten pet dishes. Don’t be concerned about the water in the cup of bromeliads as these plants provide a chemical to prevent mosquitoes breeding. All being well with the COVID situation, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall on Thursday, 2nd June. Guest Speaker, Barbara Beerling, will talk about ‘Repairs to Flood Damaged Gardens’. Being a qualified horticulturist, Barbara specialises in garden problems, disease control, plant identification, roses, fruit trees and pruning, so her advice, will be invaluable to those present whose gardens were damaged during the February/ March floods. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Morning tea is served at 9.45 a.m. and the entrance to the hall is at 36 Trundle Street, Enoggera. The club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month except January. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

Come Meet Our Local Cake Decorators An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association

What fun we had at our April Meeting and welcomed several interested new members.

We had a workshop afternoon and learnt how to make small flowers using basic tools found in the kitchen. We then added them to a small plaque suitable for an Easter or Mother’s Day cake. The May meeting has been brought forward a week and will be held on the 14th May as our venue will be used for the Federal Election on the 21st May. Robyn will be showing us a popular technique called ‘Bas Relief’ after a short business meeting. We meet at the Arana Hills Community Hall on Dawson Parade commencing at 1pm. We are a branch of Fay, an original member of the the Queensland Cake club, demonstrating the flowers at Decorators Association and we aim to foster the last meeting. and improve the art of cake decorating and sugar craft by providing the opportunity for an exchange of ideas and skills. Each meeting we have some form of sharing, either a workshop or a demonstration by a member or guest. Check our Facebook page by searching Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail.com for more information. New members are always welcome.

How to stop mentally ‘Spiralling’ This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry.

Mentally spiralling, otherwise known as ruminating, having obsessive thoughts, or hearing chatter.

We can all experience it at some point in our life, and when we do, it can feel extremely overwhelming. This can become intensified when we are triggered, feel that we are not being heard, or when similar patterns of behaviour keep happening and we feel like we don’t have a say in the situation anymore. So, when we feel like we have a loss of control, we need to find ways of gaining it back. This is how the chatter can start. Replaying difference scenarios over and over in our minds, different outcomes, it’s like the same negative thoughts keep playing over and over. I’m exhausted! I think we’ve all been here. If you haven’t, I’m sure you are aware of someone who does it. All you want to say is “just stop thinking about it!”. Ruminating hurts our mental health. It can lead to depression and it negatively impairs your emotions. This can look like getting irrationally angry, feeling weak for not standing up for yourself, thinking others are deliberately out to make you look bad, alternate endings to different scenarios, paranoia, impacting your self-worth. When a stress

www.echo-news.com.au

response is triggered and then remains constantly activated, we keep reliving it over and over in our head. Every time we replay it, it retriggers this stress response. Long term implications of constantly being in this heightened stress response can be cardiovascular disease and inflammation, among others. This is why it is important to get it under control. Think of your thoughts as a highway, the more a road is used (higher demand), the stronger it gets. The less a road is used, the smaller it gets. When we start thinking about a particular scenario, it is new and begins like a little pathway. The more we think of it, the stronger it turns into a road, and when we ruminate it becomes like a highway. This constant reinforcement is so strong, and now just consumes all our thoughts. All those lovely positive things we used to think, such as positive self-esteem, belief in ourselves & our decisions, can now be not thought of as much, and turn into the little pathway. This is why it is hard to be rational when we have been spiralling for a long period of time. Your spiralling thoughts are like a highway & we need to turn them back into a pathway. There are several ways to do this. Finding what works for you is so beneficial because once you know it works, you can use it immediately. Firstly, interrupting the thoughts when we realise were ‘doing it’ again, ruminating. You can use mindfulness – “where am I feeling this discomfort, how is my heart rate, is it an immediate threat, these thoughts are harming my mental health, take a deep breath & focus on something that you can control”. You can set new goals – to be more assertive, compassionate, or empathetic, focus on the things that you can change, finding a strategy to feel safe again. Question your thoughts – did they really mean it in that tone, were they having a bad day & snapped at you by accident, do you really believe what you are thinking or are you catastrophising? Understand your triggers – understand what or who triggered you and find new ways to manage when you feel triggered again; such as avoidance of certain people, keeping calm, using your words to express yourself in a healthy way, and rehearsing a new desired reaction when you are triggered. Increasing your selfesteem is a huge one, when you have a positive perception of yourself & content with who you are, it can make you feel secure within yourself so it’s easier to not let others bother you. Another simple strategy is to distract yourself. This is effective because when you are distracted, you are less likely to think about the issue and then prevent the ‘highway’ from developing. Step back and look at the bigger picture, when we refocus on what’s really important, then it can put things into perspective. Talk to yourself in the second person as if you were talking to a mate “ok Elena, how are you going to handle this situation, what are you going to do first?” This is only temporary; things can always get better. This is a process of learning yourself and what works for you. You will feel more in control and give you a sense of wellbeing. Your mental health is important. Do you know that if you text 0477 13 11 14 between 6pm - midnight when you are in need of support, a trained Lifeline crisis support worker will text with you? So if you are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping, please drop them a text. They listen without judgement and provide a safe space to discuss your needs, worries or concerns. They will also work with you to explore options for support.
