Have Your Say on Warner South Development

A development application was lodged on the 22nd December with Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) for the southern side of Warner Road, for a housing development known as ‘Warner South.’ 117 Warner Road, warner covering 7 blocks This application seeks for the preliminary approval for 195 houses, along with a home based business, a park, sales office and utility installation on seven blocks. The DA includes a Variation Request to vary the effect of the MBRC Planning Scheme 2016 and Reconfiguring a Lot - Development Permit for Subdivision (7 into 195 lots plus drainage reserve, open space and new road). A map showing the proposed block plan is illustrated on the right hand side. More information is available via the DA tracker on the MBRC website at https://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/Services/ Building-Development/DA-Tracker. (Type in application number is 9486642). Here you will also find landscaping, traffic and ecological assessments, along with other assessments. This application is ‘Impact Assessable’ under the state’s Planning Act 2016, so the applicant must publicly notify the application, and anybody can then lodge a formal submission with the council raising any issues, concerns, objection or support for the proposed development. Submissions can be in favour or opposed to the proposal or just to ensure a particular issue is noted by council to consider when assessing the application. For example, you may generally be in favour of the proposed development but have concerns with some elements (ie. traffic management, noise, interface with existing surrounding homes, design and built form etc). Submissions assist council officers if they are inclined to recommend approval of a proposed development to ‘condition’ the proposed development to add or change elements due to concerns raised by the public. Thank you to Cooper C. Aged 10 from Ferny Grove for his image. It’s of all the interesting things people have thrown out and the tip have reused to decorate their roundabout,’ said Cooper

Clothes and Compost –The EcoFriendly Duo You Didn’t See Coming

Grace Kemp, a young Warner local, lives a double life between raising a family and working as a Global Ambassador for the Slow Fashion Movement taking the world by storm. Not only is Grace a qualified seamstress, but she is also Brisbane’s queen of composting clothes. Here’s why.

A few weeks ago, Grace researched and wrote her blog ‘Can You Compost Clothing?’ on her business’ already established website, Raspberries & Soda. In Grace’s words, Raspberries & Soda is a culmination of years of study and training, a love for beautiful, unique pieces, and an expression of her journey through sustainable fashion. With a completed Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and experience alongside amazing Brisbane designers and ateliers, Grace has a plethora of engaging and innovative techniques up her sleeves. She seeks to drive the fashion industry forward to “a new era of eco consciousness and lowered waste”. And this is exactly what motivated the seamstress to write her blog. “What if we could compost our clothes and turn them back into the soil to regenerate the next lot of fibre being grown?” This question—and this solution—posed by Grace, is what truly sticks out of the blog. To avoid landfill, and to avoid a dismal end to the life of a previously loved garment, composting clothes is the answer. The next question posed is Grace Kemp - Transforming how we how? How can we turn our socks and jocks into soil? think about clothes In her blog, Grace explains the large-scale picture of things, as well as providing a step-by-step, printable guide to composting worn out, un-op shop worthy clothes at home. The first step, organically, being to ensure that your garments or textiles (like sheets or curtains) are 100% natural fibre. I.e., are made of cotton, silk, linen, hemp, or wool. An interesting thing to consider next time you read the fine print of the clothes you buy, but this is just a taste tester of Grace’s blog. So, if you’re curious to know how you can tap into your inner eco-warrior and say farewell to dying garments the sustainable way, check out the rest of the blog on Grace’s website: https://raspberriesandsoda.com.au/blog/ Alternatively, give her a call on 0458 665 422 for more information. A Great Day Out Awaits at the Tramway

The Brisbane Tramway Museum Society was inaugurated in 1968, one year before trams ran for the last time in Brisbane. A few far-sighted tram enthusiasts saw the need to ensure that Brisbane’s mainstay public transport vehicles were preserved for future generations to experience. By being ahead of the close-down, the museum was able to negotiate with the Brisbane City Council and thus was able to acquire over 20 trams for the museum. At least one of each model of tram was preserved, that included two Trolley Buses along with two work vehicles which are still in use at the museum. At present, the museum has a fleet of seven operating trams and this will soon be joined by another coming out of restoration in the early part of this year. The oldest tram was built in

1901 (in USA) and the youngest in 1964. Almost all of Brisbane’s trams were built in Brisbane at the Milton workshops. The museum, located at Ferny Grove, is fully manned by volunteers – there are no paid staff. The museum is managed by a Board of Directors and is a Not-For-Profit organisation. It is open to the public on Sundays from noon to 4pm. Visitors can enjoy unlimited rides on the trams during their visit and can take in videos and static displays.

Page 8 - February 2022, The Eatons Echo

Just one of the trams available to view at the museum

The museum also hosts the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed which is integral to maintaining and restoring the fleet. The Shed is open on Tuesdays and Fridays and its members also indulge in their own projects such as furniture making and repair etc. More recently, the Women’s Shed at Ferny Grove was established and its members also carry out their own projects similar to the men’s shed. The ladies are on site on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The museum is set in about five acres (hectares) of picnic grounds, and facilities are there for families to enjoy a picnic lunch with drinks and memorabilia available on site. Further information can be found on the website: www. brisbanetramwaymuseum.org or on Facebook. In coming issues, we will cover each tram and vehicle with more history of this important part of Brisbane’s Public Transport, covering some 70 years.

Stories of selflessness and mateship at 2022 Australia Day Awards

The achievements and selfless contribution of four outstanding Moreton Bay citizens were celebrated last month at the Moreton bay Regional Council’s 2022 Australia Day Awards. For the first time, this year’s Awards were streamlined into two categories - Citizen of the Year Award, and the new Mayor’s Community Spirit Award. The main award pays homage to the region’s exemplary citizens, while the spirit award was open to those who live in and outside the region, and those who aren’t Australian citizens - also a first for the program. Winner of the Citizen of the Year Award was Mr Graham Gibb of Bribie Island. Mr Graham Gibb of Bribie Island has been named Moreton Bay Regional Council’s 2022 Citizen of the Year. Community is at the heart of everything Graham does. On land and at sea, his dedication and passion for serving others is a shining light, with his own needs always placed last. Graham’s decade-long service as a Senior Radio Officer with Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island has not only seen him play a vital role in protecting those enjoying Moreton Bay and supporting the crews on the water, but also helps ensure the future of the organisation. Graham established and continues to lead the annual Emergency Services Expo at VMR Bribie Island, coordinating the extremely popular event to bring local emergency services together, as well as working with local schools and community organisations, engaging with kids and the wider public. He’s also an instrumental part of the Young Emergency Services Ambassador program, inspiring future

The Australia Day Award Winners generations to join the emergency services and Defence forces. Graham’s passion for helping others has also seen him working as a Volunteer in Policing with Bribie Island Police for the last ten years. This role sees him act as a ‘buffer’ between police and the community, offering understanding and assistance during what can be a daunting time. Always humble, Graham says he couldn’t do the work he does without the support of others, and even though he’s officially retired, has no plans to slow down when it comes to volunteering. A dedicated and widely respected member of the community, Graham is a truly deserving winner. Three other members of the community have each received a Mayor’s Community Spirit Award; Mrs Ann Brooks, Bribie Island, Mr Len McCandless, Lawnton and Mr Malcolm “Mick” Klein, Morayfield

Veteran, Olympian And Pine Rivers Own Santa Claus Amongst Those Recognised At The 2022 Dickson Community Awards

The 2022 Australia Day Dickson Awards have seen outstanding local residents rewarded for their hard work and dedication to our community and our country.

The Dickson Citizen of the Year for 2022 is John Hardgrave. After 17 years in the ADF including operational service in the Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and Afghanistan, John is now serving veterans throughout Queensland at Soldier On. A keen advocate, he is a volunteer on the DVA Younger Veterans Forum, the DVA QLD Consultative Forum and the Steering Committee for the Adelaide Veterans Welfare Hub. In addition to this, John is a coach at the Albany Creek Crushers JRLC and a volunteer surf lifesaver at the Bribie Island Surf Club. The Small Business of the Year is Bridgeman Stainless Solutions & Amaroo Landscape Group. With former professional footballers working in the business, they have created ‘Kickin with a Cuz’ designed to engage young indigenous children through football and encourage them to make good life choices. Local Legend of the Year is Judy Kranen OAM. Judy is well known for her commitment to Veterans and local history. Heavily involved in honouring the Anzacs through the Anzac Memorial Avenue Committee, Judy has been leading the campaign to re-name the bridge over the M1 between Kallangur and North Lakes ‘Anzac Avenue Centenary Memorial Bridge’. Sports Person of the Year is Ashleigh Gentle. A triathlete who

Designing a Bridge to a Floodless Future

Youngs Crossing Road at Joyner during a recent flood event

Shovels will hit the ground later this year on a solution to flooding along one of Moreton Bay’s key connectors.

Moreton Bay Regional Council will be upgrading Youngs Crossing Road at Joyner where it crosses the North Pine River to improve its flood immunity, safety and vehicle carrying capacity given forecast growth in population, development and traffic volumes. The jointly-funded project between council and the Federal Government will see a new 212m bridge built west of the existing road at Petrie which will provide a solution to the 20,000 vehicles that use this stretch of road. Currently, during heavy rain events or when the nearby dam releases water, the road is cut off from vital services. Federal Member for Dickson Peter Dutton welcomed progress on the project, and said the Federal Government had committed more than $30 million towards the upgrade to get it started as soon as possible. ‘Thanks to our funding commitment, council has already been able to get started on early works and bring about a solution that’ll provide resilience for a one in 100-year flood event,’Mr Dutton said. ‘It only takes a few severe storms like the ones we’ve seen just this summer to put Young Crossing out of action, forcing drivers to take a much longer detour and putting pressure on other roads like the Bruce highway and Old Gympie Road.’ The project will also include upgrades to the Protheroe Road intersection and ongoing access to nearby parks as requested by locals. The expressions of interest process will run until April this year, with short-listed businesses then invited to tender for the project and start works in the second half of 2022, weather and construction conditions permitting. For more information head to https://www.moretonbay.qld. gov.au/Services/Projects/Roads/Youngs-Crossing

Sing with Serenata in 2022!

Make 2022 the year you take your singing beyond the confines of the driving seat of your car or your shower.

The Serenata Singers, a community choir based in The Gap, is holding an Open Night at 7.30pm on Monday 07 March in the auditorium of The Gap Uniting Church, 1050 Waterworks Road. This is an excellent, COVID-safe opportunity to learn more about the choir, observe and join in a rehearsal, and meet the choir members. Can’t make the open night? Don’t worry, the choir welcomes new members at any time. After a rough couple of years, which saw the choir cancelling most performances, the choir is looking to bounce back strongly in 2022. The choir, which sings a variety of popular, traditional, spiritual and show tunes, had entered 2022 with exciting plans and high expectations. The Serenata Singers were particularly careful as a significant number of choir members are in the ‘high risk’ category due to their age. The choir generally performs for people in retirement and aged care facilities – visits to which were, of course, curtailed. But you can’t keep a good choir down. Choir members have performed in five concerts towards the end of 2021, much to the enjoyment of residents and a few Christmas concerts in Samford and The Gap. The choir is looking forward to the future and expects to build in 2022 stronger than ever. If you can hold a tune and are interested in joining them, you would be most welcome. For more information, check out their website https://serenatasingers. org.au/ or send an email to serenatasingersthegap@gmail.com.

Samford Under The Stars Set To Take The Spotlight

Preparations for events in 2022 are continuing in Moreton Bay with planning underway to bring back one of Samford’s family-favourite events after the expected peak of the Omicron COVID-19 strain.

Whip out the picnic blanket, put on your dancing shoes and bring your best singing voice for the expected return of Music Under the Stars at the Samford Showgrounds on the 12th February. After a one-year hiatus due to wet weather, council’s muchloved event would look to be back at the Samford Showgrounds with a bumper lineup of music to get the whole family grooving along with good food, artisan markets and fun activities for the young and young-at-heart. The gold-coin event will be headlined by Rumours the Australian Fleetwood Mac Experience who will perform intergenerational hits like Dreams and Landslide, together with performances from emerging indie-reggae rock band Lucid Safari, Angel Strings Quartet and acoustic artist Amy Kate. Families are welcomed and the event will also mark the return of the popular night-time markets complete with handmade, local and sustainable designs and wares. So mark your calendar for a night under the stars, and be sure to say G’day to the show society who will also be running a bar for the four-hour event. World Day of Prayer and You're Invited!

The World Day of Prayer is a global movement led by Christian women who welcome you to join in prayer and action for peace and justice. Through preparation and participation in the worship service, we can come to know how our sisters of other countries, languages and cultures understand the Biblical passages in their context. We can hear their concerns and needs and can feel ourselves in solidarity with them as we pray with and for them. All Saints’ Catholic Parish is hosting the annual World Day of Prayer this year, and surrounding Christian churches are invited to share in the service. This year, England, Wales and Northern Ireland are the focus. The Project, for which donations are collected on the day, is for Bibles for Bubs, involving Northern Ireland. Event details: Location: All Saints’ Catholic Church, 4 Fahey’s Road East, Albany Creek Date: Friday, 04 March 2022 at 10am Refreshments available after the service. Please note, those wishing to enjoy Morning Tea at the World Day of Prayer celebration, will need to be double vaccinated. Double vaccination is not required for the Service in the church, but it is required due to the Government Hospitality and the Archdiocese of Brisbane regulations when the congregation move into the Parish Centre for eating and drinking. Sweat For Joy And Connection

Ladies - Get Ready to Squat, Shake, Stretch, Box, Bounce, Breathe, Shop, Sip and Socialise on 26th March to make a collective stand against domestic violence.

Sweat Like A Girl is back in 2022, with all funds going towards DV Connect. 10 local fitness businesses have signed on to power women through a sweat-inducing exercise marathon of fitness classes from self-defence to HIIT, yoga to zumba, bootcamp to pilates, run training to jazzercise, boxing to meditation - all connecting to the joy of movement. If sweating isn’t your thing - then you can still support local businesses and connect by checking out the market with over 20 stalls already signed up offering giftware, homeware, health & beauty products, women's clothing, active wear and delectable treats. The event is the brainchild of Hills Womens Collective founder Briony O’Connor. Briony founded the group in 2019 with like-minded women who believe that small actions from many can make a difference and are passionate about empowering people in their local community. Having worked as a Physiotherapist for many years Briony, learnt the importance of putting people’s chronic pain in context, often finding that as she started to unpack their stories there was often abuse of some form in their background. She wanted those women to have a voice and be heard, to have a lifeline and that is what organisations like DVConnect provide and why she is passionate about fundraising for them. The concept of putting together an exercise marathon to do this came from a desire to help women find joy in movement in its many forms and to see that we are stronger when we

are a collective. Lastly, there is no better feeling than to have a sense of belonging, so creating an event that brings our North West Brisbane community together to support our small businesses through markets and networking was my other driving influence. Women on the Hills. Call up your girlfriends, share a coffee in the morning, a workout or 10 throughout the day, shop to support local small businesses, and know that the price of your ticket has helped support women and families experiencing domestic violence. "None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful." – Mother Teresa. The event is on Saturday 26th March 2022 at St Williams School, Dawson Parade, Keperra. It’s open to women from 12 years and over. Tickets are $30 for students, $50 for adults. For tickets:, scan the QR Code at the bottom of this article. Hills Women’s Collective would like to acknowledge their local sponsors who are helping this event to be bigger and better this year. Arana Hills Leagues Club as a major sponsor and Harcourts is a Level 2 sponsor. If you’re a local business who would like to get involved and help the group hit their goal of raising more than $10K for DV Connect then you can still donate to the raffle. An Affordable and Fun Sports Club for All

Try Something New with VIEW in 2022

Looking for an affordable and fun sport for the kids? Then look no further than the Pine Rivers Pumas Junior Rugby Union Club! They are an all inclusive club that caters to boys and girls from all age groups and abilities from 3-16 years and can be found within the Les Hughes Sporting Complex in Bray Park.

Looking to meet some new people and try something different in 2022?

The club has a long history after being founded in the 1980’s. Sadly in recent times the club was at risk of hanging up its boots due to very low numbers. Nevertheless, during the last few seasons, a group of energetic and dedicated parents have joined the committee and the club has come bouncing back. It is amazing what renewed energy, great ideas and a family oriented, all inclusive vibe can do! Last season the club reached some new heights with the hand over of new playing fields, a clubhouse and facilities – a project that has been over 10 years in the making. This came about from the tireless work of Moreton Bay Regional Council, the dedication of the Pumas Committee and help from Pine Rivers Rapids Baseball Committee, with which the club shares the purpose built facilities. The U13 Rugby XVs team have also had great success after becoming runners up in their division for the 2021 season. Furthermore, one of their players was selected for a representative team and played in the QLD State Championships. Both feats that the entire club came out to support and were immensely proud of. This year the club is planning some great opportunities for their players. There are large number of girls joining the junior ranks and they will be starting a Girls Rugby 7’s team for girls aged 11-18 years. The club is also encouraging more players to try their hand at representative football. For the little people, aged 3-4years old, who are too young to play on the field, there is the option for the ‘Little Rugby’ development squad which is a lot of fun on Friday evenings. With some of the best playing fields in Brisbane that are the envy of many clubs, a friendly committee, committed coaches, great facilities and a hot BBQ every Friday night, why not come down and check them out?

VIEW Clubs (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) are a valued part of The Smith Family, which the Brendale Evening VIEW Club support by sponsoring eight Learning for Life students. They hold monthly dinner meetings where you can enjoy a two course meal, chat with new friends and listen to an entertaining guest speaker. Members meet for a regular coffee morning (which often merges into lunch!) on the first Saturday of the month at White’s Coffee Co., Bracken Ridge Tavern, Bracken Ridge. Various other outings during the year are held, as well as the annual Fashion Parade. Dinner meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at Aspley Hornets Football Club, 50 Graham Rd, Carseldine. Visitors are always welcome to attend meetings, however a booking is required. Pop down and give them a try as they would love to meet you! For more information, email brendale. view@gmail.com or phone 0409 991 428

Myths Abound In Publishing. Print Books Are Alive And Well

By Carolyn Martinez Myths abound in publishing include; Print books are dead and young people are leading the charge to killing off print books.

Contrary, Publishers Weekly reports that 18-34 year olds are leading the charge away from digital devices. Brisbane author Bryn Smith, who pens the gritty sci-fi awardwinning Magnus Nights’ series, agrees. 29-year-old Smith encourages his peers to read print books to thwart algorithms. ‘Reading used to have a monopoly on our entertainment time—except for the odd theatre show and public execution,’ Smith said. ‘Today, books compete with so many things for our time. There’re movies, Netflix, podcasts, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. People have invested a lot of money and Carolyn Martinez’s daughter, Kitty, steps in for technology in these platforms to the camera shy owner of get us hooked and to keep our A Lot of Books in Ipswich. eyes on their screens.’ When was the last time you ‘The problem is these platforms browsed in a bookstore? do not feed your soul and your mind. They feed an algorithm that gives you more of the same and builds a safe little echo chamber. But modern media’s desire to give us a unique, personal experience has a chilling side effect—it separates us. Books however give us a common, shared experience that brings us together.’ Storytelling is the backbone of community; a fundamental driver of a happy life. The ability to live multiple lives through the pages of books is one of the reasons I’ve dedicated my life to producing great books. Books bring us together, and they challenge us with new knowledge, new people and new ideas. We incorporate this into ourselves and become a fuller person than we were yesterday. Books make us more human. One of the biggest publishing stories out of the United States last year was the decision by the U. S. Department of Justice to block Penguin Random House’s $2.18 billion acquisition of Simon & Schuster. The U. S. Department of Justice contended that the purchase would harm top-selling authors by reducing the number of publishers able to bid on the most popular authors, thereby reducing author earnings, and ultimately hurting consumers whose choice would be narrowed—funnelled into ever tightening algorithms. Bookstores are as essential as hospitals and roads. I’m passionate about preserving our libraries and physical bookstores in Australia. I believe they are just as essential as roads and drainage, hospitals and education. When was the last time you made a morning of it to visit your local library or quaint bookstore? Undoubtedly, digital and audio books are a valued addition to the storytelling landscape but as Smith suggests let’s not accept them being our only avenue for discovery or we’ll find ourselves mere robots for algorithms. Cans for Change By Lawrey Goodrich

A super funny story about recycling that your boys will love!

Synopsis: Daniel Jeffries knows cars. More importantly, he knows his dad’s car, a 1970 Ford XW Falcon GT, his dad’s pride and joy. Daniel helped restore it. But then his dad became obsessed with recycling. Now the GT is a GT – oh no! To have a dump for a backseat is the worst. Especially when the school bully discovers Daniel. The flies… The filth… The funk… Will Daniel’s reputation be rusted or restored? Brisbane-based Lawrey Goodrick is an author/illustrator, and a long-term foster carer. With over ten years experience fostering children he knows the importance of exploring the nuances in human relationships, and sprinkling stories with belly laughs so kids connect. Cans for Change explores what happens when Daniel is mortified as he is seen by the school bully just as his bindiving, can-recycling dad pops his head out of an industrial bin. Daniel takes off in his dad’s car, pretending he doesn’t even know him! The ensuing adventure revolves around a surprising police officer with a megaphone, a trip to the recycling station, an encounter with zombies, a tender moment with his dad, and a showdown of all showdowns with the school bully. Look out for Lawrey Goodrick driving around the Brisbane region in his work ute. He tells us there are only a handful of takeaway drive-thrus that he’s too tall for but finding out the hard way the first time was so embarrassing that he almost felt like Daniel, the lead character in Cans for Change, and considered fleeing the scene of the bang. Luckily all life-size characters remained largely intact. Cans for Change is available direct through Brisbane publisher hawkeyebooks.com.au, and all good bookstores and libraries. Contact Hawkeye Publishing if you want Lawrey Goodrich’s team for a drama and illustration workshop at your school.

Here’s to 2022 being a BIG year An update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Association

Upper Kedron Hall in Cedar Creek Road. Circa 1900

The Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. (EDHS) has had a tough few years. We have had to cut back on a number of our usual community activities due to the impacts of COVID-19 and key members of the Society passing away, moving out of the district or no longer being able to assist. But as the saying goes, the only way is UP! We are looking at re-booting our association and coming back in a big way in 2022. Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for 27 March. If you want to get involved with the Society, and perhaps join the management committee, please get in touch by phoning 0475 353 550. With COVID-19 restrictions easing, we are looking at bringing back our annual ‘Open Day’ in July after a three year absence. We have volunteers at the Enoggera Memorial Hall each Thursday from 9.30am to 1pm to host our public history display. Please drop in and say ‘hello’. Remember to follow our news and updates on our Facebook page (Likes and Comments welcome!) or view information on our website www.enoggerahistory.org Of great importance, if you have any historical photos or memorabilia of Enoggera, North West Brisbane or the Hills District you’d like to donate to the Society … we’d love to hear from you! Drop in to the Enoggera Memorial Hall any Thursday morning or email enoggerahistory@gmail.com You may have something like the photo shown in this article of the Upper Kedron Hall in Cedar Creek Road, taken circa 1900. School Days Recollections at Bunya School

An update from the Samford Museum

The Bunya School

In the early years of the 20th century, several families from today’s Hills district attended Bunya School.

When Bunya school closed in 1920 due to low numbers, two Bunya families were taken and collected by their fathers driving horse and buggy to Grovely School - later known as Mitchelton School. Other families commented in their reminiscences recorded in Bunya School 1875-1965 by Melva A Welch, they attended Albany Creek School during the Bunya School closure. An idea to leave and return home at times corresponding with school came undone when a police truancy officer who rode out from Newmarket caught up with the boys and escorted them to school, where they attended regularly until Bunya reopened in 1926. At this time Jack Caesar transferred from Mitchelton School to Bunya - possibly to help reach the required numbers of pupils. For only a few months, children of a family dairy farming next to where Bunya Park used to be crossed the South Pine River to attend Bunya School. Even though Bunya was ‘in the bush,’ the school was central for families from all directions. The delayed 2022 school year has some similarities to 1932. Then, children under 10 years were debarred from attending owing to the prevailing epidemic of infantile paralysis (polio). By February 24, 1932 the I P Campaign Committee decided that public schools should remain closed to children under 12 until March 14. For up-to-date information on Samford Museum’s opening hours, please check our website or call 3289 2743. Research enquiries maybe emailed to info@samfordmuseum. com.au or call Geoff on 0417 610 983 .

Clear a blocked drain with one cup of bicarb soda and two cups of vinegar. Pour the bicarb soda down the drain then pour the vinegar on top. Watch as the the bicarb soda and vinegar bubbles and gurgles. Leave for 15 minutes then pour a jug full of boiling hot water down the sink. Your sink will smell fresh again. This process might need to be repeated if the sink is still blocked. Special Tip: add some of your favourite essential oils.

War Chronicles from Our Veterans

Lest We Forget! These simple words are spoken at ANZAC Day Commemorations every year. But how do we ensure that, as a nation, we don’t forget the sacrifices of these ordinary men and women whose actions and experiences were extraordinary? This Story Australia is a charity dedicated to capturing and preserving the significant moments of Australia’s history, as told by those who experienced it first-hand via high-quality video documentaries.

In collaboration with This Story, Echo News is delighted to bring you the third edition of our monthly segment that showcases just a few of the veterans whose full stories can be found on This Story's YouTube page (link available from thisstory.com.au). Owen Benn

WW2 Veteran | Private, The Australian Army Owen Benn was born in Toowoomba, Queensland in April 1920 and spent his early years on a mixed farm property in Cambooya called ‘Newberry’. He joined the Australian Infantry after getting ‘itchy feet’ to leave the farm and because simply ‘we were at war’. Owen’s three brothers soon followed him with 2 serving in the navy and one in the air force.’

Claude Malone

Vietnam Veteran | Sapper, The Australian Army

Claude Malone grew up in Cherbourg, Queensland, volunteered for the Army in 1968 and served until 1974. He was told that the war in Vietnam would be over by the time he finished his training, but this proved wrong. Claude spent time as a tunnel rat in Vietnam and remembers being sent into the darkness with a torch and a .45 which he called a ‘peashooter.’ Unfortunately Claude’ health was severely affected by Agent Orange and in later life he has had knee, hip and shoulder replacements as well as arthritis in his joints.

Terry Walker

WW2 Veteran | Trooper, Royal Hassars (RH) British Artillery Soldier

Terry Walker was born in Secunderabad, India in November 1923. He enlisted at Aldershot, England on the 30th May 1938 in the Calvary of the Line as a bugler. Terry was the colloquial “Ten Pound Pom,” arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1957 before moving to Redcliffe, Queensland. Terry was instrumental in the construction of the Botanical Gardens in Redcliffe and was a founding member of the local Lapidary Club. Terry passed away in February this year.

As previously mentioned, This Story is a not-for-profit charity. Their high quality documentaries are offered online 100% free of charge to the public and allow all Australians to develop a deeper understanding of some of Australian history’s most significant events. If you would like to offer support, donations can be made online at https://thisstory.com.au/donate/. Looming Showtime for Echo Gecko our Gem Enthusiasts The This month, we welcome

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club The opening of the Gem Club Workshop has been delayed due to the Covid 19 situation.

The club will be opening from February 10th (Thursday session) from 9am to noon for Lapidary work and noon to 3pm for Silverwork enthusiasts. We also have a Saturday afternoon session for Lapidary from 1pm to 4pm. The Clubrooms are situated at 40-46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove, and there is plenty of parking in the street. There are a variety of diamond saws in the workshop from four inch up to 24 inch, which members may use during the workshop sessions. The workshop also includes diamond grinders, polishers, flat laps and faceting machines. A nominal fee is charged for a workshop session and for cutting on the diamond saws an additional fee of 10 cents per square inch. Club members are looking forward to the Gem Shows this year that various Clubs organise around the State and in the immediate surrounds of Brisbane. The Gem Show scene has been very quiet since the arrival of Covid-19 in 2020. Gem Shows are a mix of displays by Club members, Traders selling Lapidary equipment, etc. and ‘tailgaters’. Tailgaters are individual members who want to dispose of their excess gemstone material and pay for a site at these Gem Shows to do that. These Gem Shows are generally advertised in Lapidary magazines. There is one at Aspley State Primary School on 5th and 6th March. Other Shows will be held at Mudgeeraba, Ipswich, Caboolture, and Beenleigh later in the year. Tailgaters sell a variety of gemstone material as well as other items, such as lapidary machinery, mineral and fossils. It is a good source of buying ‘hard to get’ material. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club does not hold a show due to a lack of a suitable venues in the local area. For more information about the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club Inc. contact John on 33511038 or Lloyd on 33512093.

Money.

The likes of Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Dannii Minogue, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Julia Roberts and dozens of others have all effortlessly entered this country, with nary a whisper. When quizzed, politicians use their ease of access as being beneficial to our economy. In other words, its money that is at heart of the matter.

Money, so the old saying goes, is the root of all evil. Those words were sung by the Andrews Sisters with their hit song of 1946 and echoed several decades later by ABBA, Pink Floyd and a few others. Whether it comes in paper or plastic notes or coin, money is one of, if not the most powerful force in the lives of most. Early humans developed the barter system to trade goods and services, eventually using spices or even salt as currency. It was only when some bright spark invented, what we now call money in about 5000BC, that humans started to get serious about money. An Indo/European people, the Lydians, were the first known people to mint their own coinage around 700BC and others like the Romans and Greeks followed. The word money is derived from the Latin `Moneta` meaning mint or money. Moneta was the original name of the Roman goddess Juno, in whose temple Roman coins were minted. There are now 180 known currencies worldwide being used by 195 countries with the British pound being the oldest still in use. The pound dates back to the 8th century. Currently the world’s strongest currency is the Kuwaiti Dinar, followed by the Bahraini Dinar, the Omani Rial and the Jordanian Dinar. The British pound comes in at number 5, with the United States dollar at number 10. The Aussie dollar rates at number 12. The Iranian Real is currently reported to be the world’s weakest currency and joining it at the bottom of the currency heap are the Vietnamese Dong, the Indonesian rupiah, the Guinean Franc and the Laotian Kip. But all that glitters is not always gold, as another saying goes. Since Federal Parliament enacted the Royal Commission Act in 1902, Australia has conducted nearly 140 Royal Commissions. Queensland separately has held over 30. Most of these, have one common denominator at each of their essences. Money or the abuse of it. But since that time, we haven’t listened very carefully to the advice given by the Andrews Sisters in the first verse of their song, which is; Money is the root of all evil, Money is the root of all evil, Won’t contaminate myself with it, Take it away, Take it away, Take it away. Yet again, can we survive without it?

Reach Your Resolutions in 2022

Pop down and visit the friendly faces that make up the Nest Community

New Year’s Resolutions are traditionally made in the last hours of December 31 and, for many people, are abandoned before January ends.

If your resolution this year was to live more sustainably, spend more time outdoors, grow your own food, learn a new skill, meet new people, or give back to your community, The Nest Community can help ease your February guilt. The Nest Community is a house on a hill at 720 South Pine Road. It’s a volunteer run community organisation with the aim of creating social connection through sustainability and skill sharing. The community now has around 100 volunteers who work in the haberdashery thrift shop, tend the garden and chickens, and teach sustainable craft workshops. Managing director and co-founder Roz Fenson said in 2022 The Nest Community is looking to create more connection through their program of workshops. ‘One of our most popular classes is our ‘Learn to Sew’ session which takes people through the basics of using their sewing machine and how to make their own clothes or household items,’ Roz said. ‘This year we’re adding ‘Advance your Sewing Skills’ for those who have mastered the basics and are looking to do more. ‘We’re actually raffling everything you need to get started making your own items – a sewing machine, sewing and crochet classes, and a voucher for our own Nest Haberdashery.’ The Nest Haberdashery sells donated fabric, sewing machines and notions, as well as yarn, knitting needles and embroidery supplies. Keen crafters can join The Nest Haberdashery Facebook group for a preview of new items in store. ‘Last year we received more than 290 kilos of donated fabric and craft supplies which we have diverted from landfill. It all gets sorted and checked by our wonderful haberdashery volunteers ready to be turned into new things,’ Roz explained. In 2022, The Nest Community will offer workshops in the basics of sewing, crochet, knitting, embroidery and quilting, as well as more advanced skills such as upcycling clothes, shibori tie dye, coil basket making, and the very popular rag rugs. There will also be kokedama workshops for gardening enthusiasts. ‘Because The Nest is about social connection and skill sharing, our workshop and haberdashery prices are low. We rerun our popular classes throughout the year so more people can get involved,’ Roz said. Upcoming workshops can be booked through Humanitix at https://bit.ly/thenestworkshops. Tickets for the Handmade Living raffle are available from https://bit.ly/handmadelivingraffle.

Welcome to our monthly dog adoption column brought to you by I Want A Greyhound (IWaG). Each month we will be showcasing one of their gorgeous pooches available for rehoming. This month, meet beautiful boy Beckham! This guy is actually more handsome than his namesake, can you believe it! If you are searching for a pal who enjoys couch cuddles, weekend adventures and hanging out with mates then Beckham is the boy for you. Beckham is a quick learner and has settled into pet life without a hitch. He adores a good walk and will show his glee with bouncy goat hops all over the place. He is an excitable fella at times, so we feel a home with older children would be best. Beckham has enjoyed supervised play with other mediumsized pooches after gentle introduction. He responds to some commands and is very food motivated so additional training would be a breeze. If Beckham is the hound you’ve been waiting for, please call IWaG on 0421 298 979 or complete the adoption enquiry form on IWaG’s websiteat https://www.iwag. com.au/adoption-form I Want A Greyhound (IWaG) Inc. is a greyhound registered rehoming, education and support charity. IWaG’s mission is to find forever pet homes for all greyhounds placed in our care. For more information visit iwag.com.au or https://www.facebook.com/iwantagreyhound

The Pulse Pet Column

Welcome to a monthly column brought to you by the experienced veterinary team at Pulse Vets Warner. This month Dr Vincent Asbury BVSc (Hons) chats about Pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis in Pets

Have we considered our four-legged friends when it comes to our off cuts, leftover meats and bones? As we may think of them as treats for our pets, unfortunately, most pets do not tolerate changes in diet especially fatty and rich off cuts.

Changes in diet, especially fatty meats, can lead to vomiting and diarrhoea, but also lead to a debilitating illness called pancreatitis. Also, it is highly important that your pet does not receive any cooked bones of any type as this can lead to digestion obstruction or constipation. Pancreatitis is common in small dogs but can affect large dogs if fed a fatty meal. The pancreas provides enzymes for digestion directly to the intestines. In pancreatitis, the pancreas becomes inflamed and irritated. This leads to a release of enzymes for digestion within the pancreas itself. The syndrome is extremely painful and essentially requires medical management and commonly hospitalisation.

www.echo-news.com.au

Clinical signs of pancreatitis include: • History of a fatty meal or change in diet. • Vomiting. • Diarrhoea. • Lethargic or off colour. • Abdominal pain, pain, and unwilling to move. • Drinking more than usual. • Off food. This can progress to liver disease, look out for yellow coloured gums or skin. Diagnosis: Blood testing is commonly used to assist in diagnosis. There are specific tests that can be used to diagnose pancreatic inflammation, but not necessarily pancreatitis e.g. pancreatic lipase. Sometimes an abdominal ultrasound can assist in diagnosis. Treatment: These patients commonly require veterinary attention and hospitalisation with fluid therapy and pain management as basic care. Pancreatitis is not easily treated and can require protracted hospitalisation with many different treatments. Some patients may require major surgery. Early diagnosis is important and therapy most likely will require hospitalisation. If concerned a visit to your local veterinarian is recommended. Prevention: It is important to realise your pet is sensitive to changes in diet and one-off meals are not recommended. Avoid feeding your pet of off cuts or new foods. Avoid fatty or rich foods especially in pets with known food intolerances, that might develop diarrhoea or vomiting with diet changes). Perform diet changes slowly over a three-day period.

Dickson News Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson

A Message from Peter Happy New Year! I hope you were able to enjoy a holiday or a break over the holidays and are ready for the year ahead. The school term is underway, and I wish local students all the best for the year ahead. A special mention goes to those students entering Year 12 for their final year or beginning their schooling in Prep, I wish you the best of luck and every success. While it has been a challenging few months living with COVID, our high vaccination rates have helped protect many Australians from serious illness or hospitalisation. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the latest jobs figures demonstrate the strength and resilience of the Australian economy and how the government’s response has saved lives and livelihoods. Our unemployment rate nationally is now down to 4.2% - the lowest it has been since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. 65,000 jobs were created in the month of December and two thirds of these are full time positions. Please get in touch if there is anything I can do to help or any local issues you’d like to raise. Peter
