What’s In Store For The Region This Year?
‘Regrowing the green heart of our suburbs’ is the catch phase for Moreton Bay Region Council’s Division 9 2022/23 Budget. So where will we be seeing our rates dollars spent over the next 12 months in the region? Well, here's a run down, with a bit of a wrap in the box below. More trees, more habitat, and more environmental protections are through our suburbs and out to the hinterland. Cr Cath Tonks (Div 9) said Council’s ‘Going Green as We Grow’ mantra was in direct response to calls from locals, as well as • delivering critical road upgrades with wildlife fencing. ‘I know residents want to see responsible and sustainable action to keep Division 9 moving with new and better roads, but want to • protect wildlife and keep the suburbs green and liveable,’ she said. With this in mind, the budget includes numerous initiatives to protect wildlife, through tree planting, fauna crossings, road upgrades and environmental initiatives, some of which are • highlighted in the box to the right. Furthermore, there will be koala proof fencing, rope bridges, and ledges on Samsonvale Road in • Joyner installed thanks to federal government assistance. A substantial amount of funding will also be directed towards recreational improvements as Cr Tonks explains. ‘Locals have told me they want more trees and better recreation • infrastructure in local parks. So we are investing $250,000 in pathways, fitness equipment, seating and tree planting as part of a second stage of upgrades at Frank Nichols Park in Warner, as • well as another $120,000 into a picnic shelter and play equipment • at Chandler Reserve in Joyner,’ said Cr Tonks. ‘I am so excited to announce that a safe pathway will also be built this year to improve access for cyclists and walkers at the South Pine Road entrance to the South Pine Sports Complex - this is • something locals have long asked for and is absolutely needed • here! ’ For more about the Budget, visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au

PREHEAT oven to 160°C. HEAT oil in a large saucepan and cook onion until softened, about 5 minutes, then add garlic and all other vegetables. Cook for a few minutes stirring constantly. ADD tomato paste, canned tomatoes, vegetable stock, wine and herbs. BRING to the boil and simmer for about 30 minutes. Do not reduce the sauce too much as any excess will be absorbed in the pasta/lasagne sheets. HEAT milk and nutmeg in saucepan, add cornflour and stir until it thickens. LAYER the tomato sauce, a lasagne sheet and white sauce in the baking dish. Repeat with two more layer. SPRINKLE with cheese and bake for approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Pickleball Promises For Plenty Of Fun!
Come and try the fastest growing sport in Australia at Samford – Pickleball a mixture of badminton, table tennis and tennis create a sport that’s fun for everyone
Zak, who founded Samford Pickleball off the back of his tennis centre Samford Valley Tennis said this practical paddle sport that you can learn in minutes, and play for a lifetime is accessible to everyone from all walks of life. ‘All of our new players can play a match within about 20 minutes of practice, and now enjoy our round robin match play sessions twice a week,’ said Zak. ‘Pickleball is more versatile than tennis The crew at Samford Pickleball where you can have four players of different skill levels enjoy a competitive match - unlike tennis where the skill levels need to be similar. The rallies are generally longer, while still being less physically demanding compared to other racket sports,’ said Zak. Along with their match play sessions, Zak runs occasional training sessions where players can improve their skills to prepare players for the many Pickleball tournaments held throughout the year. The most recent training session was held at River City Classic, Shaw Park late last month. If you would like to see what all the ‘Pickleball’ fuss is about, pop along to a sessions below with both outdoor and indoor court options available. Latest Heartening Scoop from Local Netball Club
Dakota, an 11-year-old Indigenous girl, was new to Raiders Netball Club this season—all thanks to her wonderful classroom teacher Mrs Fiona Davies at Newmarket State School. With Dakota’s father being in no position to pay or take her to and from training, Fiona voluntarily decided to pay for her registration feeds, netball shoes, and a netball out of her own pocket. Raiders also offered to provide Dakota with a uniform so she could kickstart her netball journey. However, not only does Fiona bring Dakota and her father to training each week, but she also takes the younger sibling Xavier to his Valley’s Rugby League Stafford trainings with help from his classroom teacher Anne. Fiona and Annie have been teaching the two kids for over 6 years, and recognised sporting abilities that could not go to waste. Dakota was very obviously interested in netball, and Xavier with football. With Fiona being a single parent herself, she understood the difficulty of providing the financial and organisational commitment for your kids to engage in extracurricular activities. Therefore, she took it upon herself to go the length and get these kids into sport. As well, Fiona and Anne understand that playing club sport as an adolescent is almost crucial. They get to exercise, learn new skills, make new friends, become good sportsmen, work as a team, rise to challenges, and not ‘drop the bundle’ if they don’t at first succeed. These sort of skills, the women agree, is the sort that you can implement for the rest of your life. Also, for Xavier and Dakota, they were able to find positive Indigenous role models in their clubs for them to look up to and emulate. Both children are reportedly loving their involvement in club

Dakota had a chance to meet one of her idols, Jemma Mi Mi a Suncorp Super Netball First Nations player for the Firebirds sport and can’t wait for their respective seasons to start! As Fiona explained, ‘Anne and I are doing what a lot of teachers do every day – provide extra support to their students above and beyond what it considered part of their job. We all do this because we care about our students – not just in the classroom but outside of it as well.’ On behalf of the community as a whole, we’d like to thank Fiona and Anne for their kind acts, and Raiders for giving Dakota a heart-warming welcome into their club. They are truly living up to the Aussie golden rule of giving everyone a ‘Fair Go’.

By Edita Mujkic
Today it’s Ukraine, thirty years ago it was Bosnia and Herzegovina. A devastating war destroying the country: homes in ruins, people in disbelief. Frightened mothers leaving their husbands, the fathers of their children, and departing in panic to save their children. In May 1992 Edita Mujkić fled war-torn Sarajevo with two young children, in a borrowed car, with two bags and fifty American dollars in her pocket. Her husband, Goran, stayed behind, trapped in the impenetrable siege. Between Before and After, a true story about escape from besieged Sarajevo, tracks their six hundred days of involuntary separation: Edita’s fears, anxieties, and her attempts to extricate her husband from the besieged city; Goran’s epic struggles to survive in Sarajevo, with no food, no electricity, no water. ‘Refugee stories seem similar but deep down they are all very different. Each story brings a slightly individual message,’ said Edita. ‘Mine is that “love will conquer everything”. The power of love when everything else fails is what makes our story unique. It is a universal story of hope for everyone in a difficult situation, to love and persist with the fight for better times.’ Between Before and After follows Edita and her children from Sarajevo to Split, in Croatia, where they stay with a friend for five months, waiting for Goran while his every escape attempt failed. They then move to Penrith in Cumbria, Northern England, where Edita continues her battle to help her husband escape from Sarajevo. Lee Kofman, author of Imperfect, describes it as ‘an intricately painted depiction of a vanished place and time, an epic love story capable of withstanding atrocities as well as a clear-eyed study of the cruelty and the kindness of strangers. Between Before and After is a book that will break your heart but will also restore your faith in the resourcefulness and the capacity for renewal of the human soul. Powerful and completely absorbing.’ Between Before and After is published by North Brisbane’s Hawkeye Publishing whose Director, Carolyn Martinez, says, the book “is an important contribution to migrant literature in Australia. It’s an incredibly powerful read that will change, and uplift, readers.” To purchase the book follow this link https://hawkeyebooks. com.au/between-before-and-after-by-edita-mujkic/ If you have a book you would like to share for our ‘Book of the Month’ column, please get in touch. Men’s Shed On The Hunt For Challenges
The Ridley Road Community Men's Shed is a small well -established Men's Shed situated in the grounds of The Anglican Church Ridley Road Bridgeman Downs and serving surrounding suburbs.
The Shed provides a range of services to the community, and most importantly to its members. Where would you take that chair with a broken leg, that battered sideboard handed down through the family or that Set of Gold Essayers Scales for restoration? Why not drop them into the Men's Shed for assessment. You'll be surprised at the finished job. The Men treat this as a challenge and work together to solve it. The group are always on the lookout for projects to assist other Community Groups. The Shed relies on community involvement to provide it with members, projects to work on and donations of any wood or tools you have lying around. Children’s Support Program Calls for Generosity
An update from the Brendale Evening VIEW Club The Brendale Evening VIEW Club is urging the local community to give generously to The Smith Family’s Winter Appeal this year, to support thousands of children and young people with their education as they deal with the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, The Smith Family aims to raise $5.4 million by June 30 to provide learning and mentoring support programs to children in need. VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is the largest community sponsor of students on The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, which is why its members are calling on Australians to get behind the appeal. The Smith Family’s CEO, Doug Taylor, said support from the public is vital, and will help the charity extend its reach. This is especially important with a national survey conducted by the charity revealing families are still worried about their children’s education, even as Australia emerges from the pandemic. ‘Helping students in need who are struggling at school is a focus of The Smith Family’s work. And what we’re seeing in this third year of the pandemic is the need is greater than ever,’ said Mr Taylor. ‘We want to extend our tailored learning support programs to help more children over the coming year address these issues, and to ensure they can thrive in their education once again.’ Funds raised will support 12,857 children across Australia to access a range of proven numeracy, reading, and mentoring
programs, including after school Learning Clubs. Brendale Evening VIEW Club President Shayne Hearley said, support from the community is vital in this difficult time. VIEW (Voice, Interests and Education of Women) is a national women’s organisation and support network, bringing together women to enjoy social activities, develop skills, and make connections – all while supporting Australian children experiencing disadvantage. For those who are interested to find out more about VIEW or who would like to join visit view.org.au or please email brendale.view@gmail.com or phone our President Shayne on 0409 991 428.
Despite a very cold morning, members of the Brendale Evening VIEW Club met up for some laughter and fun at their annual Fashion Fundraiser at Aspley Hornets Football Club. Funds raised go to the Smith Family Learning for Life program.

Teaching Kindness One Flower at a Time
Towards the end of term two, Albany Hills State kindness and respect, and in the upcoming Semester their focus will be resilience and confidence. School celebrated Wellbeing Week. Wellbeing Week is an initiative of the Mental Health Foundation, which is run in some of our local schools. The program aims to provide young people with knowledge, skills and tools to manage their own mental health and wellbeing. Schools can hold their own Wellbeing Week at any time during the year, using the week as an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing. Albany Hills State School celebrates Wellbeing Week several times a year, at the end of each semester. This has been occurring for a number of years and it is a special time within the school community. It is an opportunity for staff, students and families to take some time to reflect, and consider their own physical and mental health and wellbeing. In fact, Wellness Week has become such a staple in the Albany Hills State School calendar, that the school now has its own dedicated Wellness Team. The role of the Wellness Team is to plan a series of fun and interactive activities and events around a specific theme each semester. During 2022, their focus has been on their four school values; respect, resilience, kindness and confidence. This semester, Wellbeing Week has promoted
With kindness being one of the primary topics this Wellbeing Week, the school constructed a magnificent Kindness Garden in their school grounds. Students decorated hearts with messages of kindness and placed them on the lawn creating a garden of hearts. This made for a truly breathtaking scene as the lawn was literally covered in a sea of kind messages - sure to brighten anyones day. As a school spokesperson tells us, the garden has become a real talking point amongst students, staff, parents and visitors to the school. ‘Upon the completion of the Kindness Garden, everyday there has been such a buzz with students, staff and parents taking time to read and talk about the messages,’ reported the school. Prabh said she has long had an interest in international relations and participated in the United Nations (UN) Youth Australia Emerging Leaders Program in 2021. ‘During this time, I gained Prabhdeep Kaur an in-depth understanding of political and diplomatic leadership positions offered by the UN and associated government organisations, as well as how they operate in the Indo-Pacific Region,’ she said. ‘Following this, I was kindly invited to apply for the United Nations Student Ambassadors Program. ‘In this role, I try to encourage other SJFC students to become global citizens and find ways to give back to the community. ‘I also intend on running get-togethers to provide an opportunity to socialise with other ambassadors. ‘In addition to this, I have begun participating in regular Model United Nations (MUN) simulations. These are virtual exercises looking at solving global issues alongside hundreds of thousands of students worldwide from all levels of education – primary school to university.’ Prabh says her hard work and dedication to this role has helped her to take on challenging situations with confidence, what she believes is a vital characteristic of a leader. ‘Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts participated in MUN as students,’ she said. ‘During this experience I have learnt that those with authority can override public opinions, and this specifically is something I have pledged to avoid at all points throughout my leadership journey.’ College Principal, Cathy Galvin, recommended Prabh for her role and says she is definitely a student with huge enthusiasm and big ideas on how to change the world. ‘Prabh is dedicated to her studies, has an open mind and is deeply respectful in her dealings with teachers and other students,’ Ms Galvin said. ‘I can absolutely see Prabh in the world of diplomacy, she is a mighty role model to her peers, and we can’t wait to keep watching all she achieves.’ Ms Galvin said Prabh’s participation in the United Nations Student Ambassadors Program was just one example of how the secondary college works hard to prepare students for a changing world. ‘Our strong academic outcomes, combined with an appreciation for vocational and co-curricular experiences, give our students the best opportunity to success in life beyond the school gates.’

Mt Maria College Petrie, High Expectations, Resilience and Perseverance.
Mt Maria College Petrie is a Catholic secondary co-educational college for Years 7 – 12 educating approximately 540 young people.
The College’s aspirational mantra of ‘High Expectations, Resilience and Perseverance’ is a personal excellence standard and an invitation for students to do their best learning in a safe, supported, and caring environment. Located in the Petrie educational precinct, the college is less than a 10-minute walk from University of the Sunshine Coast Moreton Bay (USC Moreton Bay), Petrie train station sits between there and the school and is just over a five-minute walk to the college. 2022 will see the completion of a new oval, classroom block and an extension to the undercover sports centre with a new stage for community gatherings and space for the performing arts program. Further, the college has air-conditioned learning spaces including a state-of-the-art hospitality kitchen, modern science labs, engineering workshop, visual arts and digital technology rooms and a well-equipped music space with practice rooms. There is a central community café, every day for students, teachers and families. It is in this beautiful covered outdoor space that students gather for learning, lunch and socialising. Learning at Mt Maria College Petrie The college offers a broad and flexible academic and vocational program to meet the needs of all students - those with tertiary aspirations to those with specific educational needs. Senior students can study a range of subjects including physics, chemistry, mathematics, music, visual and performing arts, sport and recreation, hospitality, food technology, drone piloting, tourism, business and retail. A signature engineering program is the Formula Student race car program where senior students build a race car, and then race it under a special licence on the track at Lakeside Raceway. USC Moreton Bay offers a range of immersion experiences and offers students the ability to study a university subject while still at school. Principal Wayne Chapman has been at the helm since 2019 and has a message for parents: “What I want you to know about our team at Mt Maria College Petrie, is that we love our students, and we want them here all day, every day.” ‘We will get to know your child and learn how to best teach them and develop them. ‘My goal is that that every student leaves our gates highly developed and having experienced a wide range of cocurricular activities so they can become the best version of themselves in their life beyond school,’ Principal Chapman said. A key element of the college’s success with students, and what the professional teaching team do exceptionally well, is support young people to thrive in their learning and development through adolescence. Students are equipped with life, technical and soft skills, and taught how to use technology so they are flexible and resilient learners who can experience success in any environment. Learning is delivered through the lens of the Marist charism, and that offers students a rich and meaningful way to connect to a deeper understanding of themselves and their world, including the environment, social equality and serving others who may be less fortunate.

Students also participate in events and festivals such as the Writers’ Festival, Theatre Sports, Potential student engagement days and more. Student personal development opportunities include cultural immersion trips, Marist Leadership Summit, Halogen Leadership Day, Parish Youth Group, and advocacy and outreach activities such as Breakfast Club, Care to Cook, Pocket Hearts and Community Playgroup support. Fun Friday is a whole-college initiative, where students and teachers come together at lunch breaks and play games, perform musical items, or stand-up comedy for each other and engage in fun activities. Student and Family Pastoral Care Students and families can expect to be fully supported due to the unique pastoral care programs at the college. Students from different year levels gather in family style groups each morning with the same teacher who knows each student individually and is their main point of contact at school. Families are invited to become involved in their child’s learning and in college life. Parent engagement sessions are run regularly to provide fellowship and practical parenting information for families. The Mt Maria College Virtual Open Day is on Wednesday 20 July at 6.30pm. FLU
The current winters’ cold spell is a timely reminder that the threat of a flu epidemic may be close at hand. On average, flu kills over 3000 Aussies each year and those have occurred during largely warmer winters. Having just experienced a Covid-19 pandemic which resulted in a World Health Organisation estimated 15 million deaths worldwide and nearly 9000 in Australia, we are now wary of any virus that can spread rapidly with devastating results. Since Australia’s first recorded epidemic in 1834, we have had a further four, in 1890, 1957, 1968 and the swine flu pandemic in 2009.The term `influenza` has an interesting derivation. In 15th century Italy, the infection was thought to have been `influenced` by the stars, hence the term. The 1918 Spanish flu sometimes known as The Great Influenza Pandemic was by far the most devastating flu epidemic ever. With an estimated 50 million deaths worldwide resulting from the disease, it easily supplanted the 18 million deaths that resulted from the 1914-18 World War. The 14th century Black Death Bubonic Plague still holds the record for the most deaths counted. The Spanish flu epidemic spread so quickly that the world was both alarmed and confused. The New York Times announced that the origins of the disease was a result of a poor vegetable diet, largely of turnips, in war ravaged Europe. The prestigious London Times erroneously reported that chemists in England were running out of two supposed cures for the illness, cinnamon and quinine. It was estimated that 20% of the world’s population had been infected by this `mysterious illness`. It was only in 1933 that scientists were able to accurately identify the illness as influenza.

A Joy Ride in the Bash Car
Local Councillors Cath Tonks, Matt Constance and State Member Tim Mander MP, were covered in mud and still had smiles on their faces when the Albany Creek Rover Scouts took them for a joy ride in their Bash Car. Scouts love adrenaline packed activities and wanted to showcase their project car that they have rebuilt after many years of it sitting idle. Engaging local youth in motorsports that is safe and legal allows them to have fun and ensures the safety of both them and their friends. Our new Rover Unit meets weekly on a Monday evening and they are always seeking new members to join. Activities are varied and can include anything from motorsports, dirt karts, scuba diving, abseiling, rock climbing, camping, or even acting, singing or running a stage show. The list goes on of all the activities you can learn, participate in and receive certification in including Leadership, Outdoor Education, Volunteering and Business Management. Rover Scouts are inclusive of all and we welcome young adults from 18 to 25 years of age. You don’t need to have any Scouting experience, but you do need to keep up with some adventurous people and their adrenaline-packed adventures! Radio Club Want You Same Great Branch, On Their Wavelength Even Better Space
Amateur Radio as a hobby started in the early 20th century, with the advent of wireless radio communication. Back then radio experimenters built their own equipment to communicate with other like-minded radio enthusiasts and experimenters. The hobby was born and very shortly after, Australians formed the first Amateur Radio Association in the world – the Wireless Institute of Australia. Today in Australia, there are around 13,000 licenced operators who form part of a global community of hundreds of thousands of radio enthusiasts. Amateur Radio operators still build equipment and communicate with each other, but in place of the Morse Code, scratchy voices and glowing vacuum tubes of last Century, operators use a whole range of communication means from voice to digital to video with sophisticated modern equipment. Yes, there are some who still use Morse! The Redcliffe and Districts Radio Club, is located in McFarlane Park, Kippa-Ring, on the Redcliffe peninsula. The club is now nearly 50 years old and occupies a newly renovated building in the park – the old Girl Guide hut. The Club building caters for Amateur Radio enthusiasts with a meeting area, an operating radio room and repair and test facilities. Members make very good use of our equipment and gain knowledge from other members in the use of the test equipment and the radios which the club owns. The Club provides regular technical talks on aspects of the hobby and is accredited to provide training and examinations to qualify interested people for their Amateur Radio licences. The club has regular meetings every Monday night, Wednesday Morning, Friday night and Saturday morning, where we socialize, talk radio and solve the world’s problems! The club also supports the Scouting Movement with Jamboree On The Air each year, setting up and running portable radio stations for the cubs and scouts to communicate globally with other scouts. For those who like the outdoors, the Club regularly ‘goes bush’ where we set up several stations in the bush with portable radios and antennas using battery and generators for power for a 24-hour competition. Members also climb up mountains and visit national parks to conduct portable operations from there and gain prestigious awards in the Amateur Radio community. And radios these days are small enough to have in vehicles and with caravans when doing the ‘big lap’ around the country keeping in touch with friends and providing reliable emergency communications, even in remote locations. The hobby is far more involved than space for this article will allow. There are many different avenues in the hobby: we can communicate worldwide, bounce signals off the moon, talk to the International Space Station as it passes over head, and build antennas, radios and accessories for our hobby. We welcome people – men and women – from all walks of life. Radio and electronics is an inclusive hobby. Our members not only include people from technical backgrounds; we have a retired medical specialist, computer programmers, commercial sales reps, and even a military Chaplain. You don’t need a university degree to play with radios, only the desire to learn about technology. We can teach you the rest and have you on the air building friendships and feeding your technical interests in no time. Come down to meet us, or visit www.redclifferadioclub.org.au Page 22 - July 2022, The Eatons Echo
Community Bank Brendale - part of Bendigo Bank -consolidates into a new flagship branch based in Samford, in the heart of the Village Community – Celebrating a Bank of the People with 13 Years of Business.
Samford is set to become North Brisbane’s major community banking hub, as the Community Bank Samford reopens after its makeover transformation, which will see its staff come together to the country village, to an enhanced modern banking facility. Pine Rivers Community Finance (PRCF), which owns and operates the Community Bank Brendale and Samford, welcomes the consolidation with open arms and believes it is a beneficial move which will benefit the whole community. Mandy Bell, Senior Branch Manager, said, ’The refurbishment of our Samford location to incorporate all our staff at the one branch will be an incredible transition. We look forward to sharing our wealth of knowledge across our residential and business teams. So far, the feedback has been really positive and the local Brendale businesses and residents are looking forward to experiencing our Samford Branch firsthand.’ Since launching in 2002, the bank’s loyal customers have enabled PRCF to donate more than $750,000 to local community groups and clubs. ‘We always try and give back to the community in any way we can. From supporting local schools in the region, through to sporting club sponsorships and event support, Community Bank Samford and Brendale was built by the community for the community and we love to give back and ensure that our community is celebrated in more ways than one,’ said PRCF Chair, Kellie O’Brien. Mandy acknowledges that without the support of the community, it wouldn’t be the successful branch that it is today. ‘It is a great honour to work alongside our dedicated employees, who clearly care about our customers, ensuring they have the best personalised experience possible,’ said Mandy. To celebrate the consolidation of the branches, Community Bank Samford will be hosting a number of events for shareholders, customers and the wider community. ‘We can’t wait to share more of that with you. Watch this space and please visit our social media pages @ communitybanksamford for further information,’ said Mandy. ‘On behalf of PRCF and the Community Bank Samford team, we are proud to welcome you into the new flagship Community Bank Samford branch, right here in the heart of the region,’ said Ms O’Brien. Bowls Facts
Amateur Radio – What is it, who are we and what do we do?
1. An ancient Egyptian game: Many bowls historians believe that the game developed from the Egyptians. One of their pastimes was to play skittles with round stones. Artefacts of this game were found in tombs dating 5,000 B.C. 2. The world’s oldest bowls pitch: The oldest lawn bowls site still played on is in Southampton, England. Records show that the green has been in use since 1299 A.D.

Labor Ignores Everton Roads
Tim Mander MP with Steve Minnikin MP, Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads
In spite of my continued advocacy for the State Labor Government to fund the intersection upgrade of South Pine Road and Stafford Road in Everton Park, the recent Queensland State Budget has once again failed to provide any funding for this crucial project. I am extremely disappointed that the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey, has ignored the importance of this upgrade and has refused to consider the impact of this issue to motorists in the area. I will continue to advocate strongly for the State Labor Government to resolve this issue of serious congestion and safety. Furthermore, the Queensland State Budget has failed to address the deteriorating section of Old Northern Road from Rode Road to the Jinker track. It is very frustrating that the required reconditioning and resurfacing for the safety of motorists along this road has also been ignored.

A message from Peter I have hit the ground running since the election both locally and in my new role as Leader of the Opposition. It is a great privilege to be returned as your parliamentary representative here in Dickson. I am looking forward to working with you to keep delivering our community and making it an even better place to live, work and raise a family. As Leader of the Liberal Party, I will work hard to hold the Government to account and to ensure the interests of Australians are put first and foremost. I want our country to support aspiration and to reward hard work. To take proper care of those Australians who short term, or long term, can’t take care of themselves. By the time of the next election in 2025, we will have presented a clear plan and laid out our vision. Locally, there is a lot going on in our community and it is an exciting time in the Valley. There are many events happening over the school holidays and we are getting towards the completion of new community projects in our region. Save the Date - Seniors Expo 2022 One of my initiatives after I was first elected in 2001 was to host a Dickson Seniors Expo. There was a lack of information for seniors in our local community and I wanted to provide opportunities for seniors to access information, activities and services available. The Expo was such a success, with the help of the Dickson Seniors’ Council we have held the Dickson Seniors Expo. DATE: Monday 22 August 2022 Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program Do you have an idea or initiative you would like to do to help remember or commemorate those who have served our country in war time? If so, the Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Program is currently open for applications and you may wish to consider applying for funding. The program is designed to: Preserve Australia’s wartime heritage; involve people around the country in a wide range of projects and activities that highlight the service and sacrifice of Australia’s service personnel in wars, conflicts and peace operations; and promote appreciation and understanding of the experiences of service and the roles that those who served have played in shaping the nation. There are 2 categories of grants available: Community Grants (CG) Grants to a maximum of $10,000 are available for local, community-based projects and activities. Major Grants (MG) Grants between $10,000 and $150,000 are available for major commemorative projects and activities that are significant from a national, state, territory and/or regional perspective. Applications close 9:00 pm AEDT on 11 October 2022. For more information visit www.communitygrants.gov. au What’s important to you? Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph. gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities for our community. Or you can drop in to my next mobile office. I am approaching 2,500 visits in my mobile office and have helped thousands of residents with local issues. If you see me out and about with my caravan, please drop in. Alternatively, you can visit my office at 3/199 Gympie Road, Strathpine during business hours. More information is available at www.peterdutton.com.au. The Eatons Echo, July 2022 - Page 27
