Redirect Your Groceries For Good
Food insecurity—another world issue drastically worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. And another world issue that our community is striving to solve on a local basis.
The Mini Farm Project (MFP), a community initiative established to eliminate food insecurity, makes use of special purpose urban and peri-urban farms. Each farm is specially designed to produce food for those in need, with the help of local charities and food relief agencies. It is the MFP’s belief that our community’s vulnerable members deserve access to nutritious food—always. By converting underutilised spaces into urban farms to grow good quality food, this registered charity is saving livelihoods all round—and turning the heads of generous locals willing to offer more helping hands. Moreover, you can find the MFP locally at Samford with the organisation leasing half an acre from Millen Farm. In addition, they have partnered with Meals on Wheels Pine Rivers & Districts and grows fresh nutritious produce at no cost to Meals on Wheels. This allows them to divert funds that they would have spent on produce to other vital services. Liam (pictured on the left) is the Samford sites farmer and he works hard on the farm to supply a weekly Liam Dolan,MFP Farmer delivery to Meals on Wheels. with CEO & Founder of the MFP also grows and delivers free produce to our neighbourhoods, and has harnessed the power MFP Nick Steiner of Patreon—their fresh website—to set up a fundraising initiative where people can sign up to support them. Monthly pledges start as low as $3.70 (the price of a coffee!). Alternatively, there is the option of making a custom pledge. The links to this great initiative are https:// www.patreon.com/minifarmproject and https://www.mfp.org.au/. To order online, clients can go to our website and click ‘Shop Now’, or go direct to www.minifarmbox.com.au. As well as their fundraising initiative on Patreon, MFP has partnered with schools and universities to ensure these farms have a flow on community development effect outside of the supported charities. They are currently seeking philanthropic donors to get involved with bringing two new farms to fruition—one in Logan, the other in the Caboolture/ Dakabin area. As a registered charity, all of MFP’s donations are, of course, tax deductible. The MFP site at Millen Farm, Samford MFP hopes to see some of your friendly faces jump on board soon!

The scouts planting trees in the environmental corridor
Over the past two years, with the assistance of Landcare and WIRES, the Albany Scout Group have partnered with the local CSR Warner Quarry to replant a wildlife corridor at the rear of the clay mine site on Kremzow Road, Warner.
The re-establishment of the wildlife corridor ensures the existing vegetation onsite at the mine connects with the district habitat corridors. These corridors support natural processes and wildlife movement and is also known to be in the home range for a few urban koalas. Volunteers from Albany Creek Scout Group, Pine Rivers Koala Care, The Rotary Club of Albany Creek and Bushcare all came together with one aim to achieve the replanting of this environmental corridor. With A great turnout from the Scouts at the community and tree replanting day industry partners, the goal was to achieve long-term urban koala survivability, habitat protection and rehabilitation. Citizen science education was delivered via an outdoor classroom ‘on the quarry’ on these tree planting days which has promoted environmental stewardship, local responsibility, and community capacity. Scouts can achieve amazing things when working together. The children and their families have learnt about clay mining, weed management, tree selection, tree planting, koala habitats and things to do to protect koalas that live amongst us. In addition to planting trees, the Scouts have collected old towels and donated them to Pine Rivers Koala Care to assist with the transportation of injured animals to the wildlife hospitals. This joint project has brought a number of community groups together to share knowledge, resources and to promote more responsibility within our community to care for our wildlife. The Albany Creek Scout Group offers fun, friendship, skills and confidence for youth of all abilities from ages 5years to 25years. In 2017, after living abroad and in Sydney for many years, author K. M. Steele, made the decision to return to Brisbane, and settle in the Hills district.
While teaching creative writing and English Literature is her day job, she continues to build on the success of her debut novel, Return to Tamarlin, published in 2014, and recently teamed up with local up-and-coming outfit, Hawkeye Publishing, for the release of her second novel, Hunt for the Virgin Rainbow. Hawkeye has authors from all over Australia, with two, in addition to K. M. Steele, also from the local area. Hawkeye Publishing decided to sign K. M. Steele because she’s a master at comedic crime. The first in a series of three, Hunt for the Virgin Rainbow, follows three jewel thieves as they attempt to steal the famous opal, the Virgin Rainbow (it does exist!), from a gallery in Coober Pedy. Throw in some camels, a helicopter, a cast of eccentric supporting characters and authentically captured landscape, and you have a cinematic, comedic romp through that starts in the Australian Outback, moves to Canada and returns to Queensland for the inevitable showdown. The main character, Mallory Cash, a mistress of disguise and a resourceful jewel thief, will return in Books 2 and 3: Race for the Topaz Stallion and Dash for the Diamond Crown. K. M. Steele is appeared at Albany Creek Library on September 11th from 10.30am -noon with publisher Carolyn Martinez and local author C. T. Mitchell. As well as talking about the process of writing and publishing, the panel will discussed the history of pulp fiction in Australia. Doctor By Day. Rocker By Night.
It’s not everyday you come across a GP that also fronts a successful indie Rock band! However, local doctor, Dr Peter Clarke is one of them.
By day, Peter tends to clients at the Eatons Central 7 Day Family Practice. Come night fall, you can find him writing, recording and performing music with his band Mermaid Avenue. Mermaid Avenue is an indie rock/alt.country band from Warner/Eatons Hill. They were formed in 2015 and, since first cutting their teeth live in 2015, they have become a regular feature on the Brisbane scene, driven by the prolific songwriting of Peter and musicianship of Chris Wong and Mike Kearey (guitars), Mark Egan (bass), Casey Lee (keys), and Anthony Judd (drums). To date, the band have been very well received critically and have recently completed recording songs for their second album ‘Sugartown’ at The Barn Recording Studio in the Lockyer Valley. Furthermore, they have just released their fourth single from the album ‘Old with You’, mixed by iconic Australian producer Lachlan ‘magoo’ Goold who has also worked with artists such as Midnight Oil, Powderfinger, Kate Miller-Heidke and Custard. Incidentally, the song was Banks Radio Australia’s number 1 tune for August! Dr Peter Clarke at work in All this success isn’t bad for a band with a lead singer that has only started singing and playing the Eatons Central 7 Day guitar in his 20’s! Musicality comes naturally to Peter. As he explains he has had no formal Family Practice training and essentially self -taught. ‘I did not start singing or playing guitar until my early 20’s. I was essentially put in front of a microphone to sing when I was asked by a mate to join a band based on some lyrics/ bad poetry of mine he found lying around after a few beers one night,’ said Dr Peter. ‘I was a terrible singer then with absolutely no idea what I was doing. I had a few singing lessons once I heard a recording of myself and figured out how bad I was but since then I have taught myself to sing over the years through trial and error.’ The band’s music is available on Spotify, iTunes, Applemusic, Bandcamp, CD baby, and much more. You can also learn more about the band over on their website www. mermaidavenueband.com Dr Peter Clarke with the gang at The Barn Recording Studio

The Wolves Women Show Their Bark
Celebrations are in full swing at the Everton Wolves Junior Australian Football League (JAFL) club with their U15.5 Girls Division 3 winning the AFLQ juniors Grand Final last month.
The Grand Final took place on the first weekend in September at the AFLQ Headquarters, Cansdale Street, Yeronga. Despite stiff opposition, the ladies triumphed! Last year, due to low numbers, the team was merged with the Ipswich Eagles and they only won 2.5 games. However, this year, with some good recruiting from the players, the club was able to form their own team with nine brand new players to AFL from the squad of 21. They were part of this year’s 30% growth at the Everton Wolves JAFC. Some of the girls have been playing since 2015 and were part of the first Girls team at Everton in 2016. Seven of the girls are from the first female team to make finals in 2019. Charles Tibbitts, President of the Everton Wolves AFL could not be prouder of the clubs all -female team who have worked incredibly hard all year to develop their skills. ‘These girls have shown an amazing camaraderie to become a great group that plays as a team,’ said Charles. ‘The skills have increased week by week and nothing stopped them from training and playing as a group. They are an inspiration to all girls, that anyone can play AFL and all are welcome down at The Den.’ The club trains at the 93 Mott Street, Gaythorne. Players are welcome from ages 8years old to 17 years old. For more information, visit www.evertonwolves.com.au or contact 0401 647 511

A Tremendous Time in Tokyo for Local Paralympian
Year 12—365 days of knuckling down on schoolwork, rostering your work schedule around all the 18th parties and losing sleep over binging the latest hit TV series.
Not for Kirralee, a student at Genesis College, Bray Park, however. This local champ has spent the better half of her year 12 experience underwater, fighting to either make or break her dreams of becoming a Paralympian swimmer. And that she did by getting selected for the Tokyo Paralympic Games swim team, where she excelled! On Wednesday 25th August, Kirralee made a fantastic Paralympic debut scoring a Personal Best in the 100m Butterfly S13. While she didn’t make the final of the Butterfly for that night, she did a fantastic job achieving her PB. Following on from her success in the Butterfly, Kirralee went on to swim a terrific race in the 50m Freestyle. Although placing Fourth, she unfortunately just missed out on a position in the finals. The whole school cheered Kirralee on from campus! Her selection and participation in the Games ignited a chain reaction of praise and inspiration across her senior squad at Genesis Sport & Aquatics, most of which grew up in the water with her. Genesis College, her squad, and her club, all supported every step of her journey—and celebrated her achievement of the end goal just as fervently with videos and gatherings. For many of her peers, it was encouraging to see someone so close to home make it so far. Rick Pendleton, Kirralee’s coach and a former Paralympic swimmer himself, explains, ‘Just seeing an ordinary person, or someone you have grown up with, go on to achieve provides others with the idea that reaching your dreams is possible’. Since coming to Genesis in 2018, he always thought Kirralee’s bright future was likely, with her promising racing speed and good composure. He says, ‘Kirralee seems to be a very intelligent girl who is in control of her surroundings. The level of drive that it has taken to perform this year whilst going through year 12 would have been no easy feat.’ For Rick, for Kirralee, and for everyone in the Paralympics community, the best part about being involved was seeing the way in which the movement and acceptance Kirralee made the Sydney Harbour Bridge of Paralympic swimming has grown through the years.

A New Era of Freshness at Charlie’s
Since it planted its roots in Everton Park over 20 years at 4am at the Rocklea Markets, ago, Charlie’s Fruit Market has blossomed into an hand picking the store’s produce for the day. Quality and freshness iconic staple in our landscape. However, if you have driven by 473 South Pine Road in recent months, you may notice that the store has had somewhat of a transformation thanks to its new owner - aptly named Charlie! After being in business since the age of 15, Charlie had a vision to transform, not just Charlie’s, but the complex as a whole, into a modern-day health hub. With the injection of fresh energy (and finance!) into the project, Charlie’s vision has now become a reality, with businesses such as BodyFit, Studio Pilates, City Cave, and Vegan Yum taking up residence in the complex, complimenting Charlie’s Fruit Market’s healthy vision. Although recently renovated with a bright new look, there is no sterile supermarket feel here. Instead, to maintain its barn-like charm, Charlie has rebuilt the store into a character marketplace that retains the friendly country-style atmosphere welcomed in today’s society. ‘Charlie’s has always had an authentic feel, and I really wanted to keep that character in store,’ said Charlie. ‘I am delighted with the outcome of the refurbishments. We pride ourselves in offering something the supermarkets do not - good old-fashioned service with a smile. We encourage the whole community to pop down and say hi.’ Charlie, along with experienced store manager Johnny, endeavours to take Charlie’s to the next level, giving their wonderful customers the highest quality and freshest local produce. Rehabilitation For Your Best Life
The rehabilitation unit and allied health team at North West Private Hospital in Everton Park continues to grow in response to community needs, since opening with its purpose-built, light-filled gym and consulting rooms on the hospital’s ground level in June last year. Allied Health Manager Graeme Walker said while the team works with a wide variety of patients, the Day Patient Rehabilitation Programs are particularly popular – including arthritis exercise, chronic pain program, and the newest: a cancer care program. “The service has grown beyond our expectations in the first year. “We see patients for surgical reasons or medical reasons to help them recover – and we can provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy, exercise physiology, also psychology, speech therapy and dietetics,” he said. The Day Programs generally run twice a week, for two to three hours at a time, over a six week period – available to eligible privately insured and veteran patients from hospitals and directly from the community. The Arthritis Day Rehab program provides exercise specifically tailored to help those struggling with the aches and pains of arthritis. Graeme said as well as providing potential to reduce joint pain, exercise also has potential to improve joint mobility and aid better mental health. “Many Australians aren’t aware that there are simple proactive ways to address arthritis, long before it reaches the point of being a debilitating condition, and ideally
preventing that entirely.” Graeme said the Pain Day Rehab program also offers small group education sessions on topics including explaining pain, pain and exercise, managing pain and pharmacy / medications and pain. The newest addition to the Day Rehab offerings is an education and exercise program supporting people who have experienced a decline in functioning and quality of life as a result of cancer treatment. Cancer treatment can affect the ability to perform everyday activities, and by combining education and exercise, our multidisciplinary team at North West Private Hospital works to help empower people to maintain an active and fulfilling life through the CancerCare ACTIVATE program. Participants can be at various stages of their journey, whether that be before, during or after any treatment. The program is designed to assist individuals to maximise participation in an active and fulfilling life, with a focus on functional and psychological wellbeing.
Referrals into the North West Private Day Patient Rehabilitation Programs can be made by GPs or medical specialists and one of the hospital’s three rehabilitation physicians will meet with the patient and assess their needs. To learn more, see Day Patient Rehabilitation under ‘Our Services’ at northwestprivatehospital.com.au or phone 3353 7409.

Medicinal Cannabis and More
From Keperra Compounding Pharmacy Since 2018, when the Federal Government relaxed restrictions around prescribing medicinal cannabis, thousands of Australians are now using it to treat conditions like chronic pain and mental health conditions. If conventional treatments are not satisfactory, a doctor may consider a trial of medicinal cannabis. In the past, it has been a long process to obtain a prescription. A common perception with medicinal cannabis is that it can be very difficult for patients to find doctors who are knowledgeable and interested. Furthermore, the products are quite expensive and there can be many hurdles, paperwork and so forth, before a prescription can be obtained. The good news is that we have access to clinics locally. Keperra Medical Centre in Dallas Parade, Keperra have been running clinics for over a year now. The experienced and knowledgable team can assist with the prescription of medical cannabis and can streamline the process, with access only taking about a week. Another perception that medical professionals often hear is that "I'd rather be using medical cannabis than opioid products any day. But it is so expensive to access” The cost of medicinal cannabis has been reduced considerably in recent years. This is due to its
popularity and the vast number of products that are now available. The doctors at Keperra Medical Centre are mindful about the importance of value for money when prescribing medicinal cannabis and can discuss costings. Treating Pain is holistic, taking medication is often part of the solution, lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep and functionality are also as important. The team at Keperra Compounding Pharmacy always ensure their clients have a good understanding of all that can be done to improve pain and wellbeing. Medicinal cannabis is by no means all that is available from Keperra’s Compounding Pharmacy. The Pharmacists work with you and your doctor to find the best option for you. This may be medicinal cannabis or one of many options such as PEA and LDN that are used in the management of pain. It is most often the case that patients and doctors are not aware of what is actually available from a compounding pharmacy. A good example is the pain creams. Up to four medications can be incorporated at once to provide a highly effective pain cream that can be applied directly to and penetrate deeply into the area that is hurting. If you or someone you know would like more information about medicinal cannabis or any of the pain options available please call Keperra’s Compounding Pharmacy 3355 3905

Pets
The Pulse Pet Column
Welcome to a monthly column brought to you by the experienced veterinary team at Pulse Vets Warner. This month Dr Vincent Asbury BVSc (Hons) chats about Veterinary Dentistry.
Veterinary Dentistry
tartar, tooth removal, cleaning each tooth individually, assessing teeth vitality (possibly dental radiographs), and finally polishing of teeth. Most times you will not know whether teeth need removal until the pet is under anaesthetic. I do not believe clients understand the amount of effort that goes into performing a dental procedure and the difficulty in predicting what will need to be done before their pet is anaesthetised. Ideally, dental procedures will be discussed by your veterinarian during routine vaccinations or health checks. A dental assessment and estimate is best preformed in person with your veterinarian, but with the understanding that your veterinarian may not know the full extent of dental disease until your pet is anaesthetised. We all want what is best for our pet, and just like us, teeth are important for good general health. If you are concerned about your pets teeth, then the recommendation would be to visit your local veterinarian with your pet. The veterinarian will be able to give an estimate but understand there will be a range due to the difficulty of predicting whether teeth will need removal. Regular dental procedures from a young age will help to minimise the time of dental procedures and tooth extractions.
Pets in Public Spaces (PIPS) Education Program
As our pets age, they become more susceptible to dental disease. Just like us, our pets just like us need regular brushing and I say its not possible to floss our pets’ teeth. There are many preventatives for dental disease, including; brushings, greenies, (plant-based chews) diet (t/d diet) and raw bones, chicken necks or brisket bones. There are many diets that promote dental health and a dry food diet will help reduce dental tartar build up. Hills t/d diet however is designed to wrap around teeth and pull tartar off in the early stages. A new product call oxy fresh is a dental gel that can be rubbed over the teeth and left in the mouth, to clean by chemical reaction and to assist with cleaning of the teeth. This product can be used with brushing as well. A lot of pets cannot tolerate raw bones (never cooked) as the pets do not need to eat the bones. Instead, should chew on the bones to break off the tartar. Overtime, our pets will develop hard tartar on the teeth. The plaque dried over the teeth, along with bacteria cause a coating over the teeth. This leads to bad breath, gum recession and eventual tooth loss. Performing regular dentals is the only way to truly prevent dental disease as once tartar starts to build up a dental scale is preferential for removal. We will perform dental procedures to clean teeth and start with a blank slate for dental maintenance. Unfortunately, our pets will not sit in a chair and allow cleaning while awake. A dental procedure involves many steps to assess teeth. Clients ask for an estimate but it’s usually not until the pet is under anaesthetic that the teeth can be fully assessed. A dental procedure is commonly performed in older pets. Also, dental procedures involve a full anaesthetic to perform. Here at Pulse Vet Warner we offer blood test to assess vital organs (liver and kidneys). Their test helps determine the pets ability to tolerate anaesthesia and potentially anaesthetic agents. We also place pets on IV fluids during the procedure as they are generally long anaesthetics and fluids provide circulatory support. A dental procedure is not a quick procedure; it involves assessment for loose teeth, cracking and ultrasonic removal of Page 22 - October 2021, The Eatons Echo

Reptile Day!
Adopt! Don't Shop!
Pets
Pooch of the Month Welcome to our monthly dog adoption column brought to you by I Want A Greyhound (IWaG). Each month we will be showcasing one of their gorgeous pooch's available for rehoming. This month, meet Finn!
On the 21st of October, reptile owners all around celebrate and share their love of their scaly pets.
Reptile Awareness Day is created and designed to educate people on the wonders of reptiles, and to appreciate these amazing and unique creatures. Reptiles are a diverse range of animals, characterised as coldblooded – ectothermic – and basking in the sun. They are also covered in scaly skin or rigid plates called scutes, which shed as they grow. Did you know, there are nearly 900 species of reptiles within Australia alone? Over 90% of those are endemic to our continent. They range from magnificent sea turtles, chunky crocodiles, playful bearded dragons, spectacular pythons, tiny geckoes, and colourful skinks. And many, many more species. In 2019, it was estimated there there were 364,000 reptiles in Australian households! Turtles are the most common, followed by lizards and snakes. Reptiles are relatively low maintenance and relaxing pets, but each species has different living requirements based on their natural habit, diet, and appearance. Unfortunately, reptiles are also some of the most ‘forgotten’ species when it comes to care and husbandry within households. That’s why we must ensure the best and appropriate care for them to thrive, be happy and healthy! Temperature and UVB (artificial sunlight) are among the most important! If you want to learn more about taking care of your scaly friend, pop in to Petaholic Pet Store at Warner Marketplace, Cnr Old north road and, Samsonvale Rd, Warner. Thier friendly staff will be more than happy to answer your questions and provide you with the best products for your pet. You can also find them online at www.petaholicwarner.com
Finn
Finn is a handsome and quirky 5 year old boy looking for his forever home.
Finn was rehomed as a pet when he was a puppy, so he’s an experienced house hound and knows all about couches and sneaking into human beds for snuggles. In fact, his favourite spot is on the couch in the living room where he can catch the morning sun, spy on the neighbours and relax in front of the TV at night. Finn has more energy than the average greyhound and enjoys games of fetch, walks and trips to the beach, so he would fit in with an active family. He has also mastered to sit on command. Finn is thriving in his foster home as an ‘only hound’ where he laps up all the human attention and affection. Finn prefers a home without children, or with dog savvy teenagers who will respect his space. Unfortunatley, Finn is not cat or possum friendly. If Finn is the hound you’ve been waiting for, please call IWaG on 0421 298 979 or complete the adoption enquiry form on IWaG’s website https://www.iwag.com.au/ adoption-form I Want A Greyhound (IWaG) Inc. is a greyhound registered rehoming, education and support charity. IWaG’s mission is to find forever pet homes for all greyhounds placed in our care. For more information visit iwag.com.au or https://www.facebook.com/iwantagreyhound
Remember To Keep Your Pet Hydrated
Petaholic at Warner Marketplace has suburb reptile facilities
www.echo-news.com.au
Summer is almost here and it is important to keep your pet hydrated. Dehydration can be very dangerous for pets during the hot weather. Dogs and cats need water just as much as people do. Make sure your pets always have access to plenty of fresh water and they know where to find their water bowls around the house and property. Adding ice cubes to their bowls can be a special treat. You might want to avoid letting pets run around outside during the hottest parts of the day – keep them inside or at least in the shade where you know they won’t become dehydrated. Monster Event in Blackwood Street
Ghosts, ghouls, witches and definitely some Harry Potter inspired dress ups!! These are just some of the sights you will find down at the 2021 Blackwood Street Halloween Festival on Sunday 31 October in Mitchelton.
The community festival is one of the most popular - and definitely the spookiest - events to take place on the northside of Brisbane with over 5000 children and adults expected to participate this year. Unfortunately last years event had to be cancelled due to COVID 19 restrictions, so this year it is something the community is very much looking forward to. The Rotary Club of Mitchelton will again coordinate the event in conjunction with the Brisbane City Council, who is the major sponsor and the theme is ‘Harry Potter’! Blackwood Street, between Samford Road and Grovely Terrace, will close to car traffic between 3pm and 6pm on Sunday 31 October and the street will be transformed into a veritable playground of free entertainment. There will be something for all the family including The Flintstones from the 2018 c h i l d r e n ’ s g a m e s , entertainers, live music, Halloween festival.
market stalls, face painting, jumping castle and a sensational Doughnut Eating Competition, plus so much more!!. It promises to be hugely popular with the kids! There will also be awards for the Scariest and Best Costume so get your thinking cap on to what costume you might adorn. So venture if you dare, and ‘Trick-or-Treat’ your way through the local businesses and market stalls. For more information visit the Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/blackwoodst/events
The Mitchelton Rotarians look forward to feeding the crowds again at their Sausage Sizzle.

Want To Help Other Seniors Learn About Technology?
Brisbane Seniors Online (BSOL) has been assisting seniors and over 50s with computers and internet training in the Greater Brisbane area for over 20 years. Tuition is undertaken in the learners’ own homes on their own computer or device and at a pace that suits them. They are taught what they would like to know as well as what they need to know to minimise risk from scams and fraud. Mentors teach learners how to make their devices safe and avoid the risk of viruses and malware. Tuition is carried out using empathetic, volunteer, unpaid mentors who ideally need to be around the same age as the learners they are teaching. The current average age of BSOL learners is 74. There has been an influx of new learners in the local area and Brisbane Seniors Online is now desperate to recruit more volunteer mentors to continue this service to seniors and over 50s. BSOL teaches Windows, Apple, Android and smart phones. A recent concern is the introduction of the Qld Health QR code requirement. BSOL mentors can assist learners with installing and using this application and explain the alternative options where they do not have a smart phone running the application. Computer and internet users with some or all of skills and experience on these devices are welcome to become volunteer mentors. Mentors join Brisbane Seniors Online at no cost. There are no paid staff in BSOL, but mentors receive great satisfaction in helping seniors and over 50s safely and confidently use their computer and the internet. Mentors can receive support through the Mentor Support Group that is currently meeting through Zoom, but pre-coronavirus they used to meet face to face. Learners receive - as a guide - 12 hours of lessons. When that is complete, they receive ongoing support for the balance of their membership year. There is also a Digital Photography Group, as well as a Linux Group. The Linux group meet currently by Zoom, but the photography group do have regular photographic excursions to interesting locations, as well as face to face meetings. Brisbane Seniors Online would like to thank the Moreton Bay Regional Council for their support, including a generous financial contribution towards promoting Brisbane Seniors Online in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area. For more information about becoming a volunteer mentor, or about Brisbane Seniors Online, contact 3393 2225 or see www.bsol. asn.au. Facebook.com/BrisbaneSeniorsOnline
Serenata Singers Have Emerged!
The Gap Serenata Singers have, like everyone else, have had their fair share of disappointments in cancellation after cancellation of concerts for community groups. The group has been active for more than 50 years, engaging with the community. A large part of their existence has been to provide concerts for community groups, particularly Aged Care facilities. The group finally had the opportunity to perform in public again on Monday 13th September. Fifteen of their members had the privilege of presenting a short repertoire to a senior’s group which meets regularly at The Gap Uniting Church. The performance included a number of regular tunes of the group, four solos by members of Serenata Singers and a community sing-along with the seniors, of old favourites like ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ and ‘When You’re Smiling’. From all accounts, the concert was well received and many a senior wanted the singing to continue. If you are looking for an outlet and engagement with others, please contact us at serenatasingersthegap@gmail.com and come along and sing with us.

A Sensational Demonstration at Spotlight
A monthly update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators.
Heather and Robyn who received life memberships The Brisbane North Cake decorators recently spent a Sunday morning demonstrating at the Everton Park Spotlight Store. Spotlight very generously let us do so in their new workspace with the aim of attracting more members to our club. Several people stopped and watched what we were doing and there was some interest in joining us. Our September meeting was our Annual General meeting and members were presented with their badges for their years of membership. Two of our original members Heather and Robyn were honoured with life membership for their continued involvement with the club. Also, at the meeting we displayed the project that we were working on for the Association Annual Cake Show that was cancelled. Our display was called ‘Under the Canopy’ and showed what we considered went on in a bush scene under all the plants. It will be in the Arana Hills Library in January so well worth a look. The Brisbane North Cake decorators are a branch of the Qld Cake Decorators Association and meet on the third Saturday of each month (except December) at the Arana Hills Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade Arana Hills, commencing at 1pm. We try to keep the business side of the meeting as short as possible so we can concentrate on learning new skills and refining old ones with workshops and demonstrations. Our next meeting is on Saturday 16th October. Check out our Facebook page by searching Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA for more information.

CCTV INSTALLATION
FIRIES V’s COPS
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will begin works to install closed circuit television (CCTV) at various locations. The identified site locations were based on risk, factors considered included high traffic volume roads, recorded crash sites and sites currently experiencing network impacts (congestion). CCTV Cameras will be installed at the following locations: • Eatons Crossing Road and Queen Elizabeth Drive, Warner • Albany Creek Road and Leitchs Road, Albany Creek These will help TMR observe traffic congestion at these intersections which will assist in taking remedial action if necessary. If you would like further information about this installation, please contact my office on 3535 1100 or email northcoast@ tmr.qld.gov.au
9/11 20th ANNIVERSARY RL CLASH I refereed 300 NRL games, but none were tougher than the annual Cops v Firies Rugby League clash. This year commemorated the 20th anniversary of 9/11 where many police and firefighters lost their lives. This year the Firies got up 14-12 and it was great to have the game played locally at the South Pine Sporting Complex.

Dickson News Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson
A Message from Peter
The year is going quickly, school is back for term four, winter sports are finished and many in our community are preparing for Christmas and end of year sales. It is a great time of year to catch up with family and friends and I am looking forward to seeing many of you at end of year functions, school graduations and other events in coming weeks. The Vaccine roll-out is moving ahead rapidly and we are getting close to reaching the targets laid out in the National Plan for reopening. More than 70% of Australians have had at least one dose of the vaccine, and, at the time of writing, the National Cabinet is due to meet in the near future to determine the next steps for re-opening based on the latest advice.
Road Safety
To help improve safety on our roads and reduce traffic congestion, four locations in Dickson were selected to have CCTV installed to monitor traffic and assist Transport and Main Roads to optimise signals and reduce congestion. Three of the four are in this local area at: • South Pine Road and Leitchs Road, Brendale • Eatons Crossing Road and Queen Elizabeth Drive, Warner

AUKUS
I have recently returned from an official visit to the United States. During this time a new trilateral partnership AUKUS between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States was announced. AUKUS will build on the three nations’ longstanding and ongoing bilateral ties, and will enable the partners to significantly deepen cooperation on a range of emerging security and defence capabilities. AUKUS is built on a firm foundation of shared values. The first initiative under AUKUS is for Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarine technology, leveraging decades of experience from the US and UK. Nuclear-powered submarines do not have the same limitations that face conventional submarines on weapons storage, speed and endurance. They can stay completely submerged for many months, limiting the opportunities for detection by adversaries. As a three-ocean nation, it is necessary for Australia to have access to the most capable submarine technology available. Australia has no plans to acquire nuclear weapons and this proposal will remain consistent with Australia’s longstanding commitment to nuclear non-proliferation. The Government’s intention is to build the nuclear-powered submarines in South Australia, maximising the use of Australian workers.
What’s important to you?
I want to know what’s important to you. We can work together to get the road, facilities and transport upgrades our community needs to get even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977, stop by one of my mobile office caravan visits, or drop in to my office in Strathpine to let me know what your priorities are for our community.
