Soldiers Supporting Their Mates
On 12 June 1996, two Blackhawk helicopters collided in mid-air near Townsville during a training mission.
Fifteen SAS soldiers and three aviators died that night - Sergeant Hugh Ellis being among them. Sergeant Ellis’ mother, Mrs Tonia Ellis, lives in Hebel, 650 kilometres west of Brisbane. Her home overlooks a Covid-19 movement border control point where our local soldiers from Enoggera that belong to the the 6th Battalion, Australian Army Royal Australian Regiment soldiers have been supporting the Soldiers from the 6RAR with Tonia Ellis. Queensland Police Service. Photo credit Chaplain Stan Fetting Mrs Ellis had been visiting the task group members with baked goods. ‘I’m delighted to have them here, so I took down some Anzac biscuits every now and then,’ Mrs Ellis said. ‘It’s been very healing. I’ve been able to talk about things you can’t talk to others about.’ Lieutenant Colonel Bryce Herslet, Commanding Officer of Task Group 629.3’s Task Unit 1, explains that it was during those talks that the soldiers realised who she was. Nine off-duty soldiers then took it upon themselves to renovate her yard. The soldiers ‘were humbled by the opportunity to contribute to a very deserving person,’ reveals Lieutenant Colonel Herslet. They were thanked with a generous country lunch and by Mrs Ellis saying that her son would be very proud of them all.

Your Region. Your Paper. Welcome to the first edition of The Everton Echo community newspaper - a newspaper made by locals for locals!
Much like her sibling, The Hills Echo, The Everton Echo will celebrate the wonderful people, places, local organisations, and businesses our area has to offer. Community is at the heart of everything we do at The Everton Echo and we are looking forward to providing trusted content for residents. Now more than ever, it is so important to stay connected to our community and we hope that our 'local rag' can help do just that. We are honoured to offer community groups, clubs, and organisations an opportunity to showcase their monthly news, views and stories and reach potential new members. If you are a local community group or resident who would like to share a story, please get in touch. We would LOVE to hear from you! Our newspaper is proudly independently owned. Therefore, we reflect the views of the local community in an unbiased and non-political manner. In addition, we are locals; we don't just talk about being local, we live it every day! Each month, we will be producing 13,500 copies of The Everton Echo, that will be delivered via direct letterbox distribution to homes and businesses in the suburbs of Everton Park, Alderley, Mitchelton, McDowall, Stafford, Newmarket, and Gaythorne. Unfortunately, by law, we are unable to
deliver to letterboxes with ‘No Junk Mail’ signs on them. Nevertheless, copies can be picked up from the customer service desk at Brookside Shopping Centre, as well as the North-West Plaza, Everton Park and Blackwood Street Cafe, Mitchelton. We will also have a variety of magazine stands dotted around the area, so please visit our website www. echo-news.com.au or our Facebook page evertonechonews to keep up to date with locations that will be rolled out during this month. Finally, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the local businesses and community organisations that have supported us in bringing this first edition to life! They are truly the lifeblood of our publication and all the local businesses can be found on the adjacent page, so we encourage you to ‘think local’ and support them! Please kick back, grab a cuppa and have a blast reading this first edition. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. If you have any queries, feel free to drop me a line at admin@echo-news.com.au Katie Maclean, Director MAC Group Publications Pty Ltd Publishers of The Hills and Everton Echo Community Newspapers.

Defibrillator donation to Picabeen Community
Mitchelton Rotary Club has seen many challenges in its 50 years of community service, but none more confronting than the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.
Throughout lockdown and restrictions, the club has continued to support our struggling local organisations with financial donations toward their ongoing work in the community. The Club has been successful in securing a Rotary District Grant in March for a defibrillator for the Picabeen Community Centre. President at the time, Sandy Maguire, made contact with the Mitchelton Ambulance Station to co-ordinate a training session on how to use the machine as part of the Presentation to the Centre. They were finally able to turn this into a reality with the presentation of the defibrillator to the Picabeen Community Centre on the 21st July 2020. Dean Parham, Mitchelton Rotary Club President, presented the machine to Martin Turrell, President of Picabeen, and Martin responded with a warming speech of thanks for the donation and recognised the important work that local community organisations have done, during and after Covid-19. Following the presentation, Mitchelton Ambulance Station Officers, Michael Dorman and Eugene O’Mara, gave a demonstration on how the defibrillator works, where the best location for the equipment would be and the importance of a defibrillator in saving lives. Picabeen Community Centre Manager, Jillian Warren, and Mitchelton Rotary President, Dean Parham, gave a theatrical demonstration of how to use the defibrillator with guidance from paramedics. All staff, volunteers, students and Rotary Club members were encouraged to get involved and understand how to use the equipment.
Women of Rotary; Denise Burcher, Karen Sinnamon and Lesley Woodroffe After the formalities of the presentation, Picabeen hosted a lovely morning tea in the outdoor garden and they had an opportunity to meet some of the volunteers from the Centre and speak with the paramedics about the defibrillator. Mitchelton Rotary Club continues building a road to recovery through these unique times by way of online meetings and continuous out of the box thinking for our fundraising projects that assist the local community. If you are interested in learning more about what they do in the community and internationally, visit the Mitchelton Rotary Club facebook site or get in touch with president Dean at info@mitcheltonrotaryclub.org.au
Rotary isn’t just a club to join, but rather an invitation to endless opportunities, it’s amazing what we can accomplish when hearts and minds work together.

Managing the My Meet with like minded seniors! Aged Care Process
A monthly update from the the Probus Club of Everton For nearly 35 years, the Probus Club of Everton has been serving the social and intellectual needs of seniors in the Everton Park and surrounding areas. The club provides the opportunity for seniors to meet with people who share common interests, helping them to experience an overall better quality of life than those who are isolated. Members benefit from the enjoyment and satisfaction that comes from socialising with a wonderful group of people. The club meets at 10am on the 3rd Monday of each month at the Everton Park Bowls and Community Club, 7 Gearside Street, Everton Park. Meetings give members an opportunity to socialise with other club members, get to know them better and learn from guest speakers who come to entertain and inform the club. Social outings are arranged on the first Monday of every month. Most of these are day trips to venues in Brisbane or surrounding areas. Once each year, a three day trip is arranged to a more distant destination. Please visit the Probus Club of Everton‘s website at https:// probussouthpacific.org/microsites/everton for more information or call the Secretary on 3855 1518 for more details. New members are welcomed and encouraged!

A monthly update from the Older Women’s Network Queensland, Mitchelton Branch
OWNQ members Dianne, Barbara and Evelyn
The Older Women’s Network Qld (OWNQ) Mitchelton Branch is restarting their monthly meetings. The important start date is Wednesday 26th August 2020. Their down time was not ‘down time’ as they began Zoom meetings on a regular basis. In July they had a guest speaker address how to handle mental health. The Zoom meetings and ‘Morning Tea in the Park’ filled the gaps of the normal activities and now they are looking forward to a ‘new’ normal. Currently, they are back with our regular activities, COVID permitting. Megan Collier from Home Instead Senior Care is their guest speaker and will be discussing how they can help to navigate the My Aged Care process. It is important to be informed about the important issue of obtaining assistance in getting in home care, a service that is provided by Home Instead. The Mitchelton Branch of OWNQ meeting venue and times: • Church of Christ Community Centre, Wattle Room, 28 Blaker Road, Mitchelton 4053 • Monthly Meeting is on the 4th Wednesday of the month, commencing at 10am to 12pm, with a small cost of $5. All women are welcome. For more information about Mitchelton OWNQ ring Judith on 0431 159 921

In 2019 we made the decision to install solar panels on the Junior Campus. After meeting with SolarXpress, we realised that they could offer us so much more than just a solar solution. Thanks to their high level of customer service, their innovative thinking and their commitment to us as their client, our Junior Campus students now have a wonderful undercover Basketball/ Netball court complete with carpet surface, padded poles, netting, lighting, signage, additional covered walkways, a stage and of course, solar panels. Our students also now have the ability to read our electricity usage in real time, providing them with opportunity to understand the impact our actions have on the world around us. Completely satisfied with the end result, we recently worked with SolarXpress again to create another solar solution on the Senior Campus, complete with covered a Basketball/ Netball court and water bubblers. Our College community is very grateful to SolarXpress for providing these wonderful options for our students. SolarXpress were informative, professional and a delight to work with at every stage. Thank-you Tom and SolarXpress! – Tim Grandy, Business Manager

LIFE FACT
TYPEWRITER is the longest word that can be made using the letters on only one row of the keyboard.
You can’t keep a good choir down!
The Seranata Singers at a concert ‘Pre-Covid’
The Serenata Singers, a community choir based in The Gap, entered 2020 with high expectations.
The choir, which sings a variety of popular, traditional, spiritual and show tunes, is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. In addition to a packed concert schedule, the group had also planned a special reunion function. It kicked off the year with a successful recruiting drive, but then, just as rehearsals were getting into full swing, the Covid crisis hit. The Serenata Singers have been particularly hard hit for several reasons. Choir singing is a particularly risky group activity during a virus pandemic and there have been a number of cases of Covid outbreaks in choirs in the USA. Furthermore, a significant number of choir members are in the ‘high risk’ category due to their age. Finally, the choir generally performs for people in retirement and age care facilities – visits to which have of course been curtailed. As a result, all of the choir’s scheduled concerts for 2020 have been cancelled and it is unknown when rehearsals can recommence. We are holding out hope that we will still be able to have a 50th anniversary celebration of some sort and of being able to sing Christmas carols at selected venues. Though 2020 has not panned out as expected, the choir has risen to the challenge; publishing a weekly email newsletter for members that contains links to various on-line performances, articles and activities, news and jokes; updating the choir history pages and rehearsal tracks on the choir’s website; and holding fortnightly Zoom rehearsals (which take a bit of ingenuity and patience to say the least). The choir is looking forward to the future and expects to enter 2021 stronger than ever. If you can hold a tune and are interested in joining us, you would be most welcome. You can check out our website https:// serenatasingers.org.au/ for news on when rehearsals are likely to recommence or drop us an email at serenatasingersthegap@gmail.com. You can’t keep a good choir down. As an old hymn puts it: ‘how can I keep from singing?’.

A world of wildlife in McDowall By K.R. Anderson
Chermside Hills Swamp Wallaby Photo Courtesy & Copyright K.R. Anderson
Large tracts of land in the greater McDowall area were never farmed as the country was considered to be unsuitable.
The fortunate legacy of that is that we now have Raven St Reserve, Milne Hill Reserve and Chermside Hills Reserve totalling 129ha of native bushland. These reserves support over 200 flora species and many fauna species, including a healthy population of Swamp Wallabies and Redneck Wallabies. There are also Koalas, Echidnas, Lace Monitors, Gliders, over 100 bird species and more. These reserves link to Cabbage Tree Creek, part of the Mountains To Mangroves Corridor, which runs all the way down to Moreton Bay. The Brisbane City Council's (BCC) 2018 ‘sniffer dog’ survey revealed significant koala activity along Cabbage Tree Creek near Beckett Rd. Free and safe wildlife movement is important for genetic diversity, the ability to find feed and water, escape danger and more. However, a big daily danger to wildlife is traffic, which is only increasing by the year. Winter is the most hazardous time of year for wildlife as feed in the reserves dwindles, and peak traffic can be in the
hours of darkness. Thankfully, BCC have commenced installing some new fencing with the aim of reducing losses. If you see injured wildlife, please ring 1300 ANIMAL. Please note that, although Koalas may look cute, they should never be handled by anyone inexperienced. Their claws are extremely sharp, and they will bite if they feel threatened. In addition, dead wallabies and other pouched animals should be checked for pouch young, which can live for days after the death of the mother. Please remember that removing young from the pouch is a job for a vet or experienced wildlife carer. Furthermore, if you see paint marks on a dead animal it indicates that it has already been checked and reported. A major threat is loss of habitat. Once it's gone, it's gone forever. Careful strategies leaving significant bushland and corridors in between, can mean that our wildlife can continue to thrive beside us. If you've never seen a wallaby in the reserves, you're not alone! They often stand very still, about 20 metres off the tracks, and watch us walk by! Looking from side to side as you walk will increase your chances of sightings. Much of our wildlife is nocturnal, and going for a walk in the reserves at night with a spotlight can reveal a wildlife world seldom seen!

Antarctic Adventurer Reaches Century Milestone
Mr John Russell with Brenda Wells and Tahnee McBride of Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD
Long time Just Better Care Brisbane North client, Mr John Russell, has led a life filled with more adventures than most of us could possibly imagine. So much so that not long before his 100th year he co-wrote a book about just some of his journeys. British born John first called Australia home as a young man whilst studying engineering at university and then enlisting in the Australian Military Forces (now the Australian Defense Force) at a time when it was common to claim to be older in order to meet the enlistment requirements. Being the holder of a driver’s license saw him placed into a driver’s role. John’s army stories are abound and bring a twinkle to his eye. His adventures include traveling through the Northern
Page 12 - August 2020, The Everton Echo
Territory en-route to Darwin, transporting trucks on the railway until the line ran out and then being stranded due to washed out roads and bridges. Rations ran out and bushman skills were quickly needed in order for the men to survive. Then Typhoid struck John cutting short his Army career. Nevertheless, John soon found the seas and became a crew member on the first ship to enter Pearl Harbour after the infamous bombing in 1941. He also recalls fondly his time on the RMS Aquitania, previously a passenger ship pressed into service as a troop carrier for the war effort. After the war, John’s engineering skills led him to many interesting jobs. Possibly the most notable being four trips to the Antarctic, with Australian and US expeditions. During his winter trips, he was part of the small group of men that set up Mawson Station, Australia’s oldest permanent research station and the oldest continuously inhabited Antarctic station south of the Antarctic Circle. At the age of 99, John published his Antarctic stories in a book, Antarctic Engineer, co-written by Dale Lorna Jacobsen. John leads an amazingly independent life in his longtime marital home, with just some small adjustments due to the recent Covid-19 crisis. June 18 saw John celebrate his 100th birthday. We wish him many, many happy returns and offer thanks for his service to Australia. Making a difference in our community
You may not know this, but a group of local business people and Community Leaders have been meeting on a monthly basis at the Everton Park High School, since 2016.
From humble beginnings, the handful of people at the first meeting has now grown to number over 60. This group started with a vision of an active group of like-minded business owners marrying with community organisations in order to make a difference. That group is the NOW Business Network. The members have been busy raising money from Bunnings BBQ’s, Raffles and other fundraising events. In fact, over $25,000 has been raised. This money has been gifted to local charitable organisations and individuals throughout the local region. Organisations like Stafford Meals on Wheels, Everton Park High School, The Nest, Every Step Foundation and many more have benefited from the support that the NOW Group has been able to provide. Much of the gift giving is small things like $300 bursary for students at the school, or Christmas hampers for families, but they have also been able to provide large donations like the Freezer room for Meals on Wheels. With the easing of Covid Restrictions, the NOW Group is looking to recommence its monthly meetings, which are held on the first Thursday of each month, at the Everton Park High School at 7am.

A stitch in time - Craft during COVID
If you started ‘crafting’ during lockdown and are on the lookout for more creative projects, look no further than The Nest Community in Everton Park. Here you can enjoy weekly low-cost sewing, ‘Learn to Crochet’ or Knit classes with the sustainable crafters.
The Nest Community is founded on the principles of ‘craftivism’ that celebrates the social benefits of making by hand, sharing skills and empowering through creativity. Since 2014, it has fulfilled its purpose of providing a safe and supportive environment for women of all ages to connect through craft. But, as a self-funded, not-for-profit community organisation, their future looked bleak when they had to temporarily close their doors during the March lockdown. Thanks to the support of local businesses and organisations - NOW Business Networking, Burson Auto Parts, Alderley Automative, Road Boss Rally Group, Black Bear Investments and Bunya Lions Club - they were able to open a shop front for their social enterprise, The Nest Haberdashery Thrift Shop, and continue to trade during the pandemic. The concept for the Haberdashery evolved organically over the years as people started bringing in their excess craft supplies to support low-cost workshops. ‘When I first started teaching craft workshops I had to buy new materials to run them, which went against my sustainability ethos and also prevented me from offering them at the low-cost scale we do now,’ says Nest Community CEO and Co-Founder, Ms Roz Fenson. Gradually, The Nest Community started to receive donations from deceased estates or makers wanting to clear out their stash – people who wanted to recycle rather than dump craft supplies in landfill. As donations have increased, so too has The Nest Community’s sustainability impact. All of their craft workshops and range of handmade products are resourced using diverted materials, plus they distribute diverted craft supplies to over 20 other charities around Brisbane. Even though it was only open 12 hours a week, the Haberdashery became the community’s primary income source in recent years. However, the Haberdashery didn’t have a permanent home and it was very time consuming for volunteers to move and unpack the stock each day. ‘We made plans to create a more permanent set-up under the house, but needed the support of local businesses to bring plans to fruition,’ reveals Ms Fenson. The Nest Haberdashery Thrift Shop was open for trading in January 2020 and sales were already doing well. And then COVID-19 hit. Ms Fenson says, ‘Just when we were on a roll with longer opening hours, we suddenly had to close our doors until we could work out how our customers could shop and stay safe. We really didn’t know how it would affect demand.’ Fortunately, demand for yarn (wool and knitting supplies) increased dramatically as people looked for off-line activities
Members at a rug-making workshop before Covid. Rug workshops are now running on the last weekend of each month
to fill in their time. But it hasn’t just been people looking for a crafty pasttime, some customers have been turning craft into a business. ‘One young woman, who had lost her job in hospitality, came into the Haberdashery and bought all of our upholstery fabric – which sells for around 75% less than recommended retail. She started making pot plant holders to earn a living and along the way, she has created a product that is made from materials that otherwise would have gone into landfill. She’s going really well!,’ says Ms Fenson. With Queensland now opening up and restrictions easing, The Nest Community have recently announced that their popular craft workshops are back. As a way of giving back to the community for the support in recent months, and to support people in their newfound craft endeavours, they have introduced two weekly low-cost classes. The low-cost Learn To Sew workshops are held every Saturday 10am – 12pm and will teach beginners the basics of threading, adjusting and maintaining a sewing machine. If you attend on a weekly basis, you will be able to progressively acquire new skills with different projects, like making a produce bag or a patchwork cushion cover. If yarn is more your game, buy a ball of wool and some needles or a hook from the Nest Haberdashery and their master crafters will guide you through the start-up phase every Saturday with Learn to Crochet and Knit workshops from 2-4pm. All of the Nest Community workshops are facilitated by volunteers with a passion to share their knowledge and are structured to encourage intergenerational social connection to build confidence and resilience. Many of their workshops are inspired by sustainable handmade living and include rag rug making, shibori tie-dying, Mexican embroidery, bento bag making and kokedama. Workshop places are limited, so bookings are essential. For more information, go to www.nestcommunity.org.au and sign up to their newsletter or follow them on social media to snap up a thrift shop treasure. The Nest Haberdashery Thrift Shop is open Wednesday to Friday 10am – 1pm and Saturdays 10am – 4pm.

Construction starts on new $81 million Ashford Residences, Everton Park
The entrance of the Ashford Residences community
Mirvac has commenced construction on its new $81 million Ashford Residences community at Everton Park in Brisbane, including the creation of a onehectare eco area alongside popular Kedron Brook.
Civil contractor Pensar has been engaged to start work on the initial stages which will form part of the new Ashford Residences community. On completion, the new community will feature 124 residences, including 43 freestanding homes and 80 three and four bedroom terrace homes, along with the newly restored heritage Queenslander, 'Murphy's Dairy Residence'. The first release of land lots, including a selection with leafy outlooks and direct access to Kedron Brook cycleway, is already more than 50 per cent sold and anticipated to be delivered late 2020 and early 2021 for stage one and stage two respectively. Work has also commenced on the eco area, which will adjoin the existing Kedron Brook bikeway and waterway. Prior to commencement, the eco area was designed with lush planting and landscaping to appeal to residents and support local flora and fauna. Ashford Residences is the second residential project Mirvac has commenced construction on in Brisbane this year, starting two months after the publicly listed developer turned the sod on its $77 million Tulloch House apartments - the second stage of the Ascot Green community, being developed alongside Eagle Farm in Ascot. Mirvac Head of Residential Stuart Penklis said it was a major milestone to start work on a second community in as many months, creating more than 122 construction jobs and delivering quality new housing in a sought-after inner-north area. "We are thrilled to be taking the next step in bringing this new community to life, particularly in the current environment," he said. "Work on Ashford Residences will provide a significant boost for the local construction industry and a new choice for those wanting to build a home within seven kilometres of the Brisbane CBD. "The opportunities to purchase land this close to the heart of the city are few and far between, particularly alongside the leafy green Kedron Brook and, as a result, we have been receiving strong interest from local buyers wanting to upgrade to a brand new home in the area." Mr Penklis said Ashford Residences would do full justice to the site, with a pedestrian bridge over the eco area ensuring
Page 18 - August 2020, The Everton Echo
connectivity between the Kedron Brook and new community. "We feel privileged to have the opportunity to create a community adjoining the Kedron Brook, renowned for its abundant creek-side parks, picnic spots, bike paths and dogfriendly areas, he said. "Ashford Residences embraces its unique location, with a number of lots backing on to Kedron Brook so residents can take in the beauty from their own backyard, along with Ashford Residences Club enjoying a stunning outlook over the eco area." Buyers at Ashford Residences can choose from freehold lots or those that are part of the body corporate, providing exclusive access to the Ashford Residences Club resort style facilities. The Club features a carefully crafted design with multiple nodes for future residents to enjoy, including a pool with splash area for children, lounge chairs for relaxation, a gymnasium, a teppanyaki grill, fire pit and barbecue to entertain family and friends, alongside seating areas and a large turfed area. Mr Penklis said buyers - which included young professionals, families and downsizers - were drawn to the fantastic amenity within the community and in the local area. "The new dining laneway Park Lane at Everton Plaza, local Woolworths and Coles supermarkets, schools and childcare facilities are all adding to the appeal and convenience for buyers, who love the connected location close to Enoggera train station, bus stops and the airport link," he said. For further information, please visit the Ashford Residences Sales Centre, at 50 Ashmore Street in Everton Park, visit ashford.mirvac.com or contact the Ashford Residences sales team on (07) 3859 5880

Saturday Playgroup at MPC
Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC) has two very shady playgrounds with many natural spaces to explore. The centre welcomes families with 0 to 5 year old children into the community to come and play. Although Playgroup ground to a halt in Term 2, the gates will be open every second Saturday in Term 3. Many families use this time as an opportunity for their child to become familiar with the kindy environment so it is open to all and not restricted to families intending to enrol at MPC. The cost is $12 for a first ‘come and try’ session then $50 for 5 sessions thereafter. MPC Playgroup offers a stimulating, safe, friendly environment for families to come together to play and build relationships. The lovely Jo, an educator who wears many hats at kindy, is there to welcome and interact both with children and parents. These are very relaxed occasions in which parents can use the beautiful playgrounds to engage and explore with their children. Some children bundle in very eagerly to take a look and get into playing while other families take their time to have a quiet wander by themselves, quietly taking in the surroundings and chatting together about what they see. Children build their selfconfidence through learning to talk with different children of various ages, as well as adults, and begin to feel a part of a little group. Playgroup parents and grandparents also build connections and enjoy their time in this relaxed, safe environment to socialise. Jo supports children as they explore, and encourages play possibilities. Some parents have had lightbulb moments as they hear the positive way Jo listens and responds to children. A set of grandparents commented on the changes they have seen in their grandchild’s confidence around new people: ‘He doesn’t hide anymore.’ They have attributed this new behaviour to practising talking to Jo and other new people at Playgroup. Playgroup will begin again on July 18th. Please email admin@mpc.net.au so we can be ready to welcome you. www.echo-news.com.au

Where Children Come First! C&K Everton Park Kindergarten, located at 28
Fallon Street, Everton Park, has been through a lot of changes since it opened in 1962 . However, the philosophy has always stayed the same; ‘Where Children Come First!’ C&K Everton Park is a not for profit community kindy, which means any profits are reinvested into the Kindergarten for future years. The Kindergarten is run by a committee of parents, ensuring they play a critical role in decision making. The educators are now teaching multiple generations of local families. Mrs Lindy Diacaris started teaching at C&K Everton Park in 1987, and was joined in 1992 by Mrs Anne Orchard, establishing a teaching partnership that has lasted nearly 30 years! Fortunately, at C&K Everton Park, the staff love the Kindy as much as the children and are passionate about the best learning outcomes for each and every child. Over the years, the building has been extended, playgrounds improved and many trees planted. The quiet Fallon Street location and leafy surrounds provides a natural haven for children. C&K Everton Park has faced many challenges over the years, but 2020 has proved to be one of the greatest challenges yet. The children were just settling into Kindy when COVID-19 restrictions were implemented. Kindergarten at home was challenging, as a major part of Kindergarten life is learning skills such as sharing, co-operation and independence. Educators were kept busy sharing learning ideas with parents and preparing take home learning packs to collect from the carpark. Families enjoyed sharing stories and activities about

Kindergarten at home. Now that Kindergarten has returned, the children have adapted and risen to the challenge of new routines, showing that C&K Everton Park children are competent and capable learners! One of the problems to overcome was not holding the annual Open Day in May, which allows future families to look around the Kindy. But thanks to community support from local real estate agency (Madeleine Hicks) a virtual tour of the Kindergarten was recorded and is available on the Kindy website – www.epk.asn.au
ANZAC Commemorative Wall at Everton Park State High School
Everton Park State High School was successful at the end of 2019 in obtaining funds from the local School Community fund for the construction of their own Anzac Memorial Garden.
The ANZAC Memorial Garden is now nearing completion and will be a permanent place in their school to honour all who have served and to ensure their proud military history is preserved for future generations. The school has reached a very exciting phase and they are now able to invite community members of Everton Park who would like to honour veterans and current serving members by purchasing a bass honour name plaque for their Honour Wall. The plaques are $50.00 each and will feature the veterans name, years of service and unit details. If you are interested in purchasing a plaque or plaques, please email sgall129@eq.edu.au to place an order. Turn to page 22 to read more about the Anzac Memorial garden and mural.

Establishment of Everton Park Kindergarten
At a public meeting held on Thursday 28th March 1957, at St Judes’ Hall, a Kindergarten Association was formed. Fundraising began with much enthusiasm and excitement, but the process of acquiring land resulted in many disappointments and setbacks. However, in October 1961, the Trustees signed a lease, that had been drawn up by the Brisbane City Council for 28 Fallon Street, Everton Park. After receiving bank loan approval and accepting a building quote from L Cogdale of Aspley for 3,457 Pounds, the building began. Finally, in 1962, Everton Park Kindergarten was opened!

Brightening our Schools - one mural at a time
Kirsten with the Anzac mural at Everton Park State High School
Everton Park State High School is looking pretty colourful these days, all thanks to local artist Kirsten Button
Kirsten was commissioned to create this beautiful mural (pictured above) for the school in honour of our Anzacs. Her brief was to represent a traditional Anzac figure - a woman - and also incorporate an indigenous element, which is illustrated in the piece in the form of a Southern Cross. The school received a grant from the local School Community fund for the construction of their own Anzac Memorial Garden. Works included a mural, a new seating area, flags and greenery around the artwork. You may think that mural artistry is glamorous, but Kirsten battled out the wind, cold and uneven terrain on ladders to create this colossal artwork that sizes up at 7.2m across by 3m high! However, armed with words of encouragement of students and locals, she took it all in her stride! ‘Although there were a few horrible days for working outside, a serviceman walked passed and he was really impressed. Lots of really nice kids said encouraging things too, which was wonderful!’ explains Kirsten.
This talented artist is no stranger to brightening up schools. She is a artist in residence at Patricks Road State School (PRSS), Ferny Hills and, over the years, has steadily been creating colourful artworks and murals at the school for all to enjoy. What were dull grey bessa block walls at the school now sport memorizing aqua scapes of whales (that we are told may be complete with sound of whales soon!) and mundane downpipes now represent the legs of a Flamingo, to name just a few of the murals she has created there. ‘My first mural at PRSS was actually back in 2005. My first Downpipes child started school there (I was double as just a artistic parent back then) Flamingo’s and the walls were just boring grey legs at bricks. I thought to myself, lets do PRSS! something about that and created my first mural there. I have been painting murals at the school and elsewhere since. It’s been a long relationship - around 11 murals to date,’ said Kirsten. Be prepared for adventure with the Enoggera Scout Group
Despite having around 70,000 members and being the biggest and most successful youth organisation in Australia, some families aren’t exactly sure what Scouts is.
So, who are we? Scouting has shaped the development of young people for more than 100 years worldwide. In Queensland more than 15,000 boys, girls and adults participate in the fun of Scouts. Scouting encourages diversity and inclusion – it’s truly education for life! Since forming in 1931, the Enoggera Scout Group has supported thousands of young people in making new friends, having amazing adventures, and learning new skills. Scouts are doers and give-it-a-goers! How can you be a Scout when you can’t get out and about? Well, Scouts normally meet each week and go camping, hiking, swimming, abseiling, cycling, canoeing and all other kinds of adventures. The Enoggera Scout Group is no different. However, due to the impacts of COVID-19, the group was not able to meet face-to-face for a number of months. Nevertheless, in true Scouting spirit, they did not let COVID stop them! Their group, along with thousands of other Scouts in Australia, went online. Sounds a little odd, but they met each week via Zoom, sharing stories, playing games, running competitions, and planning adventures. The Scouts even managed a virtual camp. Each member did the planning for their campsite and meals, set up a tent (in the backyard, veranda, lounge room or wherever), cooked dinner for the family (every parent’s dream!), and some even managed campfires. What about now? All the Scouts are now back having normal face-to-face meetings, with appropriate COVID plans in place. They are back planning more adventures for their group, right from the Joey Scouts (aged 5-7) all the way through to the Rover Scouts (aged 18-25). But don’t just read about them, why not pop down and try it out for yourself? You might

Find Your Family
It’s Family History month!
Researching your family history has never been more accessible or popular, says Susie der Kinderen, Publicity Officer, with Queensland Family History Society (QFHS).
‘During this Covid 19 time, people are staying close to home and getting into the fun of researching their family. For the seniors in our community, this has provided a challenge in their technology skills and has given them confidence to communicate with others if they are travel-restricted or housebound.’ August is Family History month in Australia, and many people are getting onboard with attending live online sessions on how to research their family. During August, QFHS is delivering online sessions to members and nonmembers throughout Australia. The quality of the courses, the variety of content and the professional delivery and experience of the tutors makes these sessions invaluable to the beginner and experienced family researcher. A special interest group (SIG) meets the needs of those researchers with an Irish, Scottish or central European connection. All the sessions are delivered online. Get in touch with one of the convenors of the SIG groups and ask to attend one of their meetings. Contact QFHS or visit our website for more information. www.qfhs.org.au

TAX MATTERS from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
It is that time of year when everyone is thinking about tax - sad but true. This year will potentially be very different for many because of COVID-19. Many will be receiving Government benefits for the first time and many may be working from home. With the evolution of myGov we are seeing a lot of data flowing directly from your employer, health fund and other sources. If you are a wage and salary earner, the ATO is warning against rushing into filing your tax return in case your employer has not yet finalised their single touch payroll obligations. If you are in business, you may be receiving Jobkeeper and/or may have received the Cashflow boost as well. Now it is important than ever to seek professional advice and assistance in completing your returns. Also, as we move into uncertain times, if you are in business it is more important than ever to be across your figures, controlling and monitoring cashflow and keeping an eye on the bottom line. If you are finding it difficult to meet your ATO obligations, it is essential that you communicate with the ATO; if you are a client of ours, we can communicate for you. If you are concerned about leaving home to see your accountant, they - like us here at TaxArana should have the ability for you to email or upload your documents so we can complete your return for you.
A trip down memory lane
Remember the days when attendance at Fancy Dress Balls was more important than what was on that new-fangled telly?
Here I am in 1959 with my partner, Sandra Young (left), as we prepared to do the Mexican Hat Dance with all the other Grade Sevens. Street friendships in those days involved playing ball games on the footpath and running around the neighbourhood until Mum called you home for "tea". The photo below is of a group of our neighbourhood gang that was taken just prior to setting off for the biggest night of Alison Muirhead with Sandra Young our year at the Kedron RSL Hall. We had practised diligently the Pride of Erin and the Gypsy Tap (or Tipsy Jap as we called it in the days before political correctness - but remember, these were post-war times) as well as the Grand March. The latter was an opportunity for all the costumes to be displayed at once until we were judged for the Best Dressed Girl, the Best Dressed Boy, etc.

The neighbourhood ‘gang’, taken just prior to setting off for the biggest night of our year at the Kedron RSL Hall.
These are some of the many photos which will be on display at the 60th anniversary reunion for those students of Stafford State School in Brisbane who sat the all important Grade 8 Scholarship exam in 1960. Successful candidates gained free enrolment to secondary schools in Queensland the following year. Our last reunion was held ten years ago, and because of the NBN's arrival, many of the current email addresses I have from that occasion have changed and I am having difficulty contacting past students. Our diamond jubilee reunion will be held in Brisbane on the weekend of October 17/18, and it would be marvelous to gather as many of those students from the good old days as possible. I have not seen Sandra Young since my school days. Where is she now? I know where my Grade 8 teacher is, and I visit her on a regular basis, reminiscing about old times. Very few of my vintage have that privilege. If you are a past student or would like more information about the reunion please contact me on grannyweatherwax1947@ hotmail.com. Best wishes, Alison (nee Fites) Muirhead.

Floods free hidden gems!
News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club is now up and running again after a three month closure due to the Coronavirus restrictions. Social distancing is still an issue, so numbers are restricted in our workshop and clubroom areas. Workshop times on a Thursday are from 9a.m. to noon for cutting and polishing of material and from noon to 3p.m. for Silversmithing. Our areas have sanitising stations set up which members must adhere to. Field trips this year have been limited, but we are always open to suggestions from our members of where to go. The major problem is fields closer to Brisbane (that we can do in a day trip) are closed to fossicking or are completely dug out. This is why we have to travel to outlying areas such as Chinchilla, Tweed River Valley, and Central Queensland Gemfields to collect material to cut and polish. Chinchilla has two Fossicking Reserves where you can fossick for Petrified Wood and Fern. The Visitor Information Centre in Chinchilla has all the details. The Tweed River Valley mainly produces Agate, Chalcedony and Jasper. Most of the gravel beds are accessed through private property, so it important to obtain the landholders permission before entering properties to search the gravel beds. However, there is a need for a large flood in the rivers and creeks to find material in this area. It is the floods which turn the gravel beds over and expose material which may have been buried for years and years. As soon as the waters recede from a flood, many rock hounds visit the area to search for
A prime fossicking location - The Tweed River Agate & Chalcedony. It also depends on the rate of rise during these floods which can affect how the gravel beds are turned over. A steady rise of the river or creek may not have enough force to churn over the gravel and expose Agates and Chalcedony, whereas a sharp sudden rise is what is required to really churn the gravel bed over. What is the difference between Agate and Chalcedony, people ask? They are both basically the same material, but Agate has lines and patterns, whereas Chalcedony has no lines or patterns. The Agate and Chalcedony of the Tweed River Valley is generally clear material with occasional white or moss inclusions. It does not have the colours which the North Queensland Agate from Agate Creek possesses. Enoggera Ward News Cr Andrew Wines Brisbane City Councillor for Enoggera
The Everton Echo team have achieved a great feat putting together this new publication for our community despite the many obstacles occurring during this time, and deserve a big congratulations for this achievement. North West Brisbane residents will greatly appreciate reading about our community and will be able to learn more about the different local assets and events we will see coming back to the north west side. Financial Support and Assistance The world has been going through an unprecedented time and our community has been hit hard by the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. Brisbane City Council is very much aware of the impacts this pandemic has had on our community, with residents, local businesses and community groups all struggling through this tough time. Council is committed to help our community and will assist wherever they can to relieve some of the financial burden. Council have provided $19.9 million in rates rebates and placed a 6 month freeze on rates, as well as providing a 9 month deferral of payments for those suffering financial hardship. Economic Recovery Brisbane City Council is taking action to help rebuild Brisbane’s economy by delivering initiatives through the Economic Recovery Taskforce. Cr Andrew Wines sits on the Taskforce committee which has been set up to rebuild

The Economic Recovery Package has provided $15.8 million in waived business fees and charges, $4.5 million in waived rents and reimbursements for Council owned properties, and a $1 million water rebate grant to clubs and organisations across Brisbane. The Economic Recovery Taskforce will also drive Council’s contribution to the city’s recovery over the next few years by supporting local jobs and investing in the city’s future. In the 2020/2021 Council budget, $9.2 million has been allocated to revitalise suburban shopping precincts to encourage people to eat and shop locally. Council will continue to maintain city standards and provide local jobs through the $90 million smoother streets resurfacing program, $38.2 million for better Brisbane roads, and $26.5 million for footpath reconstruction and maintenance. There has also been a $7 million boost for suburban park and footpath projects across all wards to continue to maintain our green spaces and provide exciting outdoor opportunities for families to enjoy. Our community is slowly coming together again as friends and families begin to visit our local shops and cafes, and take advantage of our suburban parks. Council will ensure that these outdoor facilities are maintained as their use increases again and will continue to improve our parks for more to see and do outdoors. Council will also continue to back our local shops so they can remain open for business, and support our clubs and community groups so that our North West Brisbane community can come back stronger than ever.

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
Exciting things are happening at Mitchie High
An artists impression of what the new coding centre at Mitchelton State High School will look like. the Palaszczuk Government investing over $12 million in a new coding and resource centre, a canteen upgrade, a double basket ball court covering, and a refurbishment to the aging school hall to bring it up to modern standards. The new coding centre is now under construction at Mitchelton State High School
Mitchie High has been delivering terrific outcomes for students for many years, but it is time to make sure the investment is made in the school to bring it in line with other schools in Brisbane’s North-West. Since the start of the year you may have noticed the Bryant Construction wrapping on the fence line of Mitchelton State High School. Mitchie High is the site of a major upgrade underway with
ACES Program
The Queensland Government’s Advancing Clean Energy Schools (ACES) program is been rolled out in Queensland schools with an investment of $97 million Queensland-wide. Mitchelton State High School, Mitchelton State School and Mitchelton State Special School are in the next batch of schools to receive the new solar panels with installations beginning in the next few weeks. This program has been fast-tracked to support local jobs, maintain the continuity of employment, and build the clean infrastructure Queensland needs going forward. With over a thousand state schools all over Queensland, the Education Department is the largest user of electricity of any state government department in Queensland. With so many buildings available to the department for the installation of solar panels, this program is a win-win for Queenslanders.
COVID-19
Queenslanders have done a terrific job observing the rules around dealing with COVD-19 so far, and we are in a position to rebuild our economy today, only because our health response has been so strong. The situation in other states and internationally reminds us how important it is we keep up washing our hands and maintaining our social distancing.

Everton News from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER
Local residents don’t want to be afraid to use the roads or have hoons causing mayhem outside their homes. The LNP will put the brakes on Queensland’s hooning problem with new cameras, new laws and new technology, which will literally shred the tyres of dangerous drivers. The LNP's plan includes: • 100 new covert CCTV cameras • Tyre-shredding road surfaces in burnout hotspots • Anti-hooning gang laws - a new offence to apply specifically to members of established hooning gangs. For more information visit DEB2020.com.au
It's 100 days until the upcoming State Election on October 31st, and it's important I communicate to you the vision of the alternative Government. Here are two of the LNP's latest policies... FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR SENIORS AND STUDENTS Seniors in the Everton electorate will be entitled to free off-peak travel on local trains if the LNP wins the next state election on October 31. Students starting full-time university and TAFE courses will also be able to apply for $500 vouchers to pay for bus or train fares. Congestion is having a big impact on the quality of life for people in the local community and this will save drivers’ time and save seniors and students money. PLAN TO GET HOONS OFF OUR STREETS Hoons need to get off our streets so we can make our communities safe again.
