An artists render of the completed Ferny Grove Central development
Construction has now commenced for the much anticipated Ferny Grove Central Development.
This initial part of the development will see construction of the multi-deck carpark which is expected to take around 13 months to complete. The remainder of the construction will follow once this expanded carpark is completed and is projected to take a further 15 months (28 months of construction in total). During the build, there will be a considerable reduction in car parking spaces available (reduction of between 326 and 188 car parking spaces compared to now). Rail commuters are reminded to plan ahead and perhaps consider other modes of transport or make alternative arrangements. The good news is that, upon completion of the development, commuter car parking will increase by more than 40%, access. For more information about the development, visit www.fernygrovecentral.com.au
A render of the completed Chermside Health Hub
As demand for healthcare in north Brisbane continues to escalate, the community can look forward to accessing a healthy dose of services in the form of the $42 million Chermside Health Hub.
The health hub is being developed by Cornerstone Healthcare Property Fund (CHP) and will be located on Cnr Gympie Road and Rode Road, Chermside. The facility will offer a range of healthcare and allied health services including general practice, radiology, pharmacy services, and bariatric surgery. The Health Hub — built on a 2,663m² lot — will include 5,187m² in lettable space as well as 180 parking spaces, which is expected to be of great appeal to tenants given the limited street-side parking available in the area. Construction on the facility has commenced and is expected to be completed on the Chermside Health Hub by the end of 2022. For more information visit www.chermsidehealthhub.com.au

Calling All Carnivores! An update from the Enoggera Scout Group
Meat eaters, do we have your attention?? Ever wondered how meat is MSA graded? Ever craved some free steak on a Friday night? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Enoggera Scouts has the opportunity for you! The Enoggera Scouts is currently finalising details to host a meat tasting evening where you will be provided with free samples of grilled beef and lamb. Free succulent grilled meat? There must be a catch?! All we ask in return is that you give your opinion on the meat’s tenderness, juiciness and flavour. Who can’t do that?! The organisers, Tastepoint, donate $1,000 to the Enoggera Scouts for our opinions (more winning!) but we must secure 20 different people for each of the three sittings. So please promote it with your extended families, friends, work colleagues, gym buddies, sporting clubs and sign up now for a session at www.volunteersignup.org/TC77R The fine print, 18+ for tasters (although if you are a strapping 17-year-old carnivore, they will not card you on the night.) We will have a campfire running out the back and have supervision for children. Feel free to bring nibblies and drinks and come early and/or leave late to enjoy the fire. Plus, you must be willing to eat beef and lamb cooked from medium-rare through to well-done. Lastly, no doubling up. You can only enjoy one sitting unfortunately. We look forward to having a great ‘meating’!
Lions Provide Warming Donation in Support of Veterans
"Where there's a need there's a Lion!" exclaimed Kay Liddle, President, Lions Club of Brisbane Bunya, as she made a special delivery of handmade blankets for our Veterans to the Wounded Heroes Op Shop, in Alderley. And, it just so happens that Jocelyn Slater who works at the Op Shop is also a member of the Lions Club of Brisbane Bunya. The Op Shop is part of the national community organisation Wounded Heroes that states on its website is ‘doing whatever it takes to provide support to Australian servicemen and women and their families, to ease the financial, emotional and personal hardships of contemporary Kay Liddle (top) and military life.’ Jocelyn Slater. Further, Jocelyn thanked the Club and Pam Butler (knitter extraordinaire) who knitted each blanked by hand: "Thank you Brisbane Bunya Lions for your support of our Veterans and thank you for those wonderful blankets Pamela you have generously donated to our Veterans," Jocelyn said. This is a wonderful example of members in different community organisations collaborating to increase reach and support for those in need.

Helping Hands For Hoping Hearts
201Q3 District Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) Co-ordinator Kevin Hedges and Brisbane Bunya Lions Club President Kay Liddle recently made a delivery of numerous bags of groceries, handmade blankets and a cash donation to Picabeen Community Centre in Mitchelton.
Overall, the nearly $1,000 in goods and funds given are the result of tireless fundraising work by members of the Brisbane Bunya Lions Club and continued support by Woolworths with their gift of some of the grocery items. The 'big cheque' presented in the amount of $500 will be used to support the continuation of the Centre’s weekly Lunchtime BBQ Programme aimed at reducing social isolation and providing a shared meal for members of the community. The donated groceries of food and toiletries will stock the Centre's pantry to supply the Food Security Programme which provides nutritious food and toiletry items to locals in need. The warm blankets will be distributed to homeless locals, or those at risk of homelessness and to those who simply cannot afford to buy a warm blanket. Picabeen Centre Manager Jillian Warren gratefully shared that ‘Picabeen plays a pivotal role in the local community with supporting vulnerable and at-risk people. However, we wouldn’t be able to make this happen without the help of other charitable organisations such as the Lions. We are very grateful – thank you!’ ‘These donations will help us to reach out to the most vulnerable in our community in a safe, non-stigmatising and an inclusive environment,’ she said. Despite having to wear masks while making the donation,
President Kay said, ‘I assure you, we were all proudly smiling under those masks - because we know the work we're doing to support Picabeen Community Centre is reaching the right people in our local area.’ Picabeen Community Centre is a not-for-profit charitable organisation servicing the north-west community of Brisbane and is located at 22 Hoben Street, Mitchelton. Brisbane Bunya Lions support various community organisations and people in the local area and welcome enquiries to support local families and initiatives.

TAX TIME TIPS
from local experts TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
The tax season has begun, and we are already seeing confusion around two areas. (A) Shortcut method (80c per hr.) for claiming expenses whilst working from home. (B) Motor vehicle costs. Working from home The shortcut method doesn’t require you to have a dedicated work area, such as a private study. The shortcut method covers all additional deductible running expenses, including: • Electricity for lighting, cooling or heating and running electronic items used for work (for example, your E computer), and gas heating expenses • The decline in value and repair of capital items, such as home office furniture and furnishings including capital items that cost less than $300 • Cleaning expenses • Your phone costs, including the decline in value of the handset • Your internet costs • Computer consumables, such as printer ink and stationery • The decline in value of a computer, laptop or similar device. Motor Vehicle Costs There is a difference between a car and motor vehicle. A car is defined is a vehicle designed to carry loads of less than one ton and less than nine passengers. Car expenses are calculated using either the Cents per kilometre method or the logbook method. You can't use these methods to claim expenses for other vehicles. For other vehicles, you claim the actual costs related to your work use of the vehicle. Other vehicles include motorcycles, scooters and similar vehicles as well as vehicles with: • Greater than one tonne carrying capacity such as utes, trucks, heavy vehicles
• A carrying capacity for nine or more passengers. It is important to get these claims correct, if in doubt please contact your Tax Agent as there is often conflicting advice given around these deductions. The deadline for The Everton Echo Sept. edition is the 19th August

The girls ready to take on the Under 13’s State Championships
The lifting of Queensland lockdown restrictions at the beginning of July came in the nick of time for 18 young hockey players from two of our local clubs.
The players were attending the 2021 Under 13’s State Hockey Championships. An early morning bus ride on Sunday 4th July allowed the girls to make their first games in Gympie, whilst the boys had to hop on a flight to Townsville with fixtures pushed back to accommodate the Brisbane teams. It is fantastic to see so many young players enjoying their chosen sport and having the opportunity to represent at a State Championship. Pine Rivers Saint Andrews Hockey Club, based in Brendale, had five boys in Townsville, (four of whom were representing Brisbane and one playing for Mt Isa) – Mitchell Little Kinder, Jono Kirk, Logan Thomas, Jack McPherson and Jett Pickering. The other local hockey club, Arana Ascot Hockey Club (based in the Hills District), had 13 girls attending, with 10 playing for Brisbane and 3 for other districts. These talented girls were; Josie Burgess, Vanessa Infanti, Matilda De Silva, Poppy Lind, Isobel McKeon, Ruby Price, Leela Christie, Georgia Beal, Jordan Halliday, Madilyn Standley, Charlie Elborne, Bianca Ryan, and Celeste Ryan. With Brisbane in the running to host the Olympics in 2032, let’s hope that we may be able to see some of our locals representing their country one day. Local Sport Keperra Country A Delightful Golf Club welcomes Dictionary For Bowls update from the Gaythorne Bowls Club more new partners InA monthly 1986, a book titled ‘The Lawn Bowls Dictionary’ by
Dallas Garton representative from Lawn Pride and Michael Dash – Membership, Partnership & Hospitality Manager of Keperra Country Golf Club A lawn care specialist, BBQ restaurant and skip supplier are the latest diverse businesses welcomed by the Keperra Country Golf Club (KCGC) as new partners following the club’s recent initiative to connect with and support companies in the community. KCGC General Manager Gavin Lawrence announced LawnPride Australia, which sells its specially developed turf products nationwide, as a Major Sponsor, and two Supporting Sponsors: American-style BBQ restaurant at Windsor, Proof BBQ & Booze; and family-owned skip bin supplier to the Brisbane region and beyond, Sunshine Skips. LawnPride Australia Principal Chris Chapman said the Club partnership was a perfect fit for LawnPride, with its range of fertilisers, pest control, weed treatments, growth regulators and other products engineered so that lawn lovers can keep their turf in tip-top shape and at the professional standard they see on leading golf courses and stadiums. ‘We know that golfers appreciate good quality turf maintenance and that’s been a priority for Keperra with its golf course and the Membership is enjoying the results,’ Chris said. ‘We want to be able to offer that same service at a grassroots level to the public (excuse the pun!). It just makes a lot of sense.’ For Ryan Lane, co-owner of Proof BBQ & Booze, making local connections is particularly important as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt business activity, particularly for those in hospitality. ‘I launched my restaurant not long before COVID came to town so we’ve had some challenges in the last nearly two years, but we’re still here,’ he said. ‘And if there’s anything that COVID has taught me it’s to support fellow local small businesses where I can.’ Proof BBQ is a USA Kentucky style eatery which serves briskets, beef, pork, vegetarian options and more which are slow-cooked in large smokers affectionately known as ‘The Girls’ and Ryan can't wait to get two of them (Daisy and Dixie) ‘down to the Keperra Club for a cook-up sometime soon!’ Golf continues to grow in popularity during the pandemic, with people embracing the game’s physical and mental health benefits and the opportunity to play in a safe and sociallydistanced outdoor environment. A few opportunities remain to take up sponsorship packages with the Keperra Club. If you’d like to be involved, please contact Michael Dash on marketing@keperragolf.com.au or call 3355 7744. www.echo-news.com.au
Keith Dunstan was a book that became very popular and was reprinted the following three years. In today’s world, political correctness has changed lots of things that can be said and done. Keith Dunstan wrote a great book and I’d like to share some of it with readers this month. See below; Age – What’s that? Bowls is a sport which caters for fourteen year olds as well as crafty characters in their nineties. Some come into the game when their speed and stamina begin to fail at lesser and more sweaty sports. But skill is not bound up with years. Bowls is a game for all seasons and your age is a bother only when you admit it to yourself. Bankers – Spectators who are watching on the bank beside the green. Like sidewalk superintendents who gather on building sites, they believe they know more than the people doing the job. Kitty – This is the jack. Or some even call it Kate. There’s deep confusion over its gender. Even so, it is a dear, sweet little creature whom bowlers have been trying to cuddle up to for many years. Length – You might be short in height, short of money, short of breath, short of a gallop, short in pastry, far too short in your hem line, but if you haven’t got length in bowls you are nowhere. Newspapers – Daily journals which give an absurd amount of space to infinitely less popular pastimes such as football, racing, cricket, golf, tennis.......... Wobble – The worst thing you can do is to deliver a bowl so that it has wobble. Wobble isn’t much good when you come through the door at 9pm either. With the ongoing uncertainty of Covid-19 and lockdowns occurring with very short notice, disruption to bowls activities can be expected for some time yet. However, when there are no restrictions in place, consider coming to Gaythorne Bowls Club for a relaxing afternoon in the outdoors on the green playing barefoot bowls with your family and friends. Before coming, it is always best to phone and enquire if the club is open and a green is available for play. If you have a large group, it may be best to enquire by filling in the on-line booking form. Gaythorne Bowls Club is located at 18 Prospect Road, Gaythorne (across Samford Road from Gaythorne RSL). For more information about the club, call 3855 2725, visit the club’s facebook page, or view the club’s website at www. gaythornebowlsclub.com.au Caterer required for Gaythorne Bowls Club. Is there a chef or caterer in the Gaythorne/Everton Park areas looking for a venue? The Gaythorne Bowls Club offers a fully approved and equipped catering kitchen, where a caterer could start their next business venture or to expand their existing business. Our previous caterer proved that people enjoy coming to Gaythorne Bowls Club as it is a place that is family orientated, offers good food at reasonable and affordable prices. The club is especially appealing to young families as the kids can enjoy their time either indoors or outdoors in a safe relaxing environment. Operating times are negotiable with the club’s management, and unfortunately, also dependent upon Covid-19 restrictions, when necessary. Phone 3855 2725 to make further enquiries. A 21st on Court
Pam with her Arana Netball family
An impressive milestone has been reached for one of Arana Netball Clubs players, Pam.
This year, Pam will have reached her 21st year playing for the club and she is still going strong with no plans to hang up her netball shoes just yet! Arana Netball Club is an extremely community-minded club and they wanted to recognise Pam‘s dedication to the sport with a gift she could use and cherish. With this in mind, President Jenna and Vice President Kym recently presented Pam with a personalised Yarn shirt. Pam, her team and families, had a sideline celebration to recognise the event and will continue the celebrations at their club trophy night at the end of the season. The Champions League Legacy!
An update from the Newmarket Bocce Club by Mario De Marco
From the club’s incorporation in 2007 the Newmarket Bocce club has always played on a Wednesday night and Sunday afternoon. A few years ago, Friday nights and Tuesday mornings were included. As most of our players play on a Wednesday night , it was decided in 2006 that an annual competition should be held - hence the ‘Champions League’ was born. I developed a prototype competition and it was successful. It has changed a bit over the years, from an eight week league to a six week duration, however it is still played on a Wednesday night. We have two games on the night. We make the teams up on the night by each player drawing a number. All players attending on the night play. So, if there are 24 players then we play triples. 4 x (3-3). If there are 17 players then its one court with 5 (3-2) and three of 4 (2-2). You got that, great! So the players that draw 1-2-3 are the first team and the opposition will be those players that draw 4-5-6 and so on. One team with two balls each and the other two players three balls each. It’s the fairest way to do it and, remember, even if it’s a competition, it’s a fun night. The prizes are not enormous! We draw teams each game, so you don’t play in the same team and that goes for every week of the competition. For a win you get two points for each player. For a draw, you get one point and of course 0 for a loss and we only play inter club. There are never the same players each night, which makes it interesting. Plus you must play five nights to qualify for a prize. One hour duration each game and federation rules apply. The only federation rule we don’t apply is that a bocce ball is out only when it falls in the line. The cost is $30 which goes to prizes, court fees and a presentation dinner. What are the prizes you ask? We get a donation from Bunnings of about $100 in gift cards and the remainder we buy gift cards. Prize categories include; Perfect Attendance –a player who does not miss a night. Top six players for game points - over the six weeks. Top six players for bowl points - accumulation of points that a player gets each game, win or lose. Most improved player - an encouragement award to a player, Sportsmanship award Wooden Bocce award - for last place. Like I said we have a presentation dinner and we all have some cheer and fun! Kokoda Challenge 2021 Accomplished!
Local Sport
Earlier this year, Mrs. Karen van Raders, Miss Arnell and Miss Perry and 11 Mitchelton State High School students entered the Gold Coast 48km Kokoda School’s Challenge, taking place in July 2021.
For the first time, Mitchie entered three teams into the event and commenced their training in Term 1. The group trained by walking various distances, some as far as 21km in surrounding suburbs including Ferny Grove, Enoggera Reservoir and Mt Cootha. The intrepid group displayed nothing short of determination, teamwork and school spirit. The teams were required to fundraise with proceeds being donated to the Kokoda Youth Foundation. The official Kokoda Challenge commenced at 11:30am on Saturday 17th July. The teams experienced mostly uphill climbs, steep descents, cyclonic winds at times and freezing temperatures during the night. After 17 hours of hiking, the teams crossed the finish line at 4:30am Sunday morning, 18th July. Crossing the finish line was described by Miss Perry as ‘an extremely emotional moment’. By the end, the teams were in excruciating pain. However their Mitchie Spirit and resilience outweighed the challenge. The teams were welcomed and cheered on at each check point by a support crew, consisting of family members and Larissa the school chaplain. A special thank you to Mrs. van Raders, Miss Arnell and Miss Perry for their dedication and encouragement throughout the entire journey. Well done to the Kokoda 2021 team – Emily, Cerys, Trish, Grace, Dekoda, Kiyana-Lee, Pippa, Izabella, Kahlen, Bonnie and Rosita. Your determination, resilience and school spirit are a true inspiration to the school community.

Question Time with Dr Katrina Warren
Pets
We were delighted to catch up with expert veterinarian, Dr Katrina Warren, recently to pick her brains in a Q & A session focussing on our feline friends and their toiletry habits! But why this topic, you may ask?!
Well, Dr Katrina is a paid spokesperson by global pet product expert PetSafe® Brand Australia who have recently launched an innovative product to the market that promises to save you time and money and guarantees you will never have to touch a cat poop again - the PetSafe® ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Box. Yes that is right. A self-cleaning litter box! Here are a few questions put forward to Dr Katrina from our local readers, along with her knowledgable answers! I have 2 cats; should I have a litter tray for each one? Cats don’t like to share their toileting area, so the recommendation is to provide one litter box per cat plus a spare. Where should I place the litter tray in my home? Ideally somewhere that is quiet and away from activity. Cats like privacy when they do their business. My cat isn't using his litter tray and leaves 'accidents' around the home, can you suggest why? The first thing to rule out is an underlying medical issue like a urinary tract infection, so please get your vet to do a checkup. There are many other reasons, such as a dirty litter box, not liking the type of litter or box, location of the box, and stress. Toileting problems are often a sign that your cat is stressed – perhaps you have recently moved house or have a new pet or baby. What is the benefit of having a 'hood' on the cat’s litter tray?
Dr Katrina Warren Hooded litter boxes are really created to keep humans happy as they help contain the smell a little and litter is not flicked out. They are not as great from a larger cat‘s perspective as they can be too cramped and the smell is contained inside the box, but cats like to have their toilet area clean. What is the best type of kitty litter and tray to use to prevent odours? Just like people, cats have individual preferences when it comes to their behaviours so it is important to choose a litter and box that works for your cat. One option could be work for both the owner and the cat are automatic litter trays like the PetSafe® ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Box which not only keeps the litter tray clean for your cat, but also helps reduce odour and mess for you.

Participation for the workshops is free but bookings are essential. Dates and times are as follows: Wednesdays : 4th, 18th & 25th Aug. & 1st Sept. at 2pm-4pm Thursdays: 5th, 19th & 26th Aug. & 2nd Sept. at 2pm-4pm The Street Serenade performance is on the 3rd September at 4pm in Picabeen Park. Volunteers Needed + Op Shop! Picabeen is also calling for volunteers to help with some of their regular programs. The Ability Art Class would welcome a volunteer to run weekly activities from 10am-12pm. The Tuesday BBQ needs people who are happy to cook up a snag or butter some rolls and they also require a volunteer to collect our bread from a bakery on Saturdays. These roles only take 1-2 hours of your time, and you can bring a friend to volunteer with! Picabeen also has an Op shop on Gilston Street in Keperra. All the funds raised from the Op Shop go straight back into services that Picabeen runs. The Change Room is calling for more volunteers to help run the Op shop. Shifts are generally 4 hours either morning or afternoon and training is provided. Picabeen is always thankful for the amazing contribution of our volunteers, and they can continue their services because of them!

Christine Atkins - Sharing the Beauty of Art
A Brit at heart but an Aussie by home, Christine Atkins has been painting up a storm her whole life, spending the last 20 years as a full-time professional artist.
Now a Brisbane local, Christine’s paintings capture Queensland’s tropical feel—from cool verandas to overgrown gardens, to mangos and papaws and monstera, to people and markets and the flowers she gleans from her own garden or surrounding streets. However, the key aspect that ties Christina’s work together is strong lighting, with many of them brought to life by mellow rays of sun or the cold white of winter daybreak. Of course, Christine is not only renowned for her pictureperfect paintings of the great outdoors—her still-life collections are just as worshipped. The local artist has a plethora of wonderful galleries to take a peek at, including her oils and pastels still-life galleries, and that of landscapes and interiors, people and animals, charcoal, pen & ink, linocuts, and sport paintings. On her website, there is also a section called Progressive Paintings, where Christine shows step by step progression of some of her masterpieces and discusses what the pieces represent to her. As she gradually adds details and light, sharper lines and shade, and sprinkles in the finishing touches, you can witness the pieces come to life before your eyes. Each and every one tells its own unique story; has its own unique journey. And Christine invites everyone to come along on some of these journeys with her, as she is soon hosting a major Brisbanebased exhibition of her galleries. A tribute to her talent, every two years, Christine displays her most recent artwork in a huge exhibition for the Brisbane region to enjoy, amongst hosting
other exhibitions in between. In 2021, her exhibition will be held at Metcalfe Gallery, Brisbane Institute of Art, on 41 Grafton St, Windsor, from 27th August to 8th September, 10am4pm. More information can be accessed on Christine’s stunning website: www.christineatkins. com.au

Fossicking Field Trip to Chinchilla ahead News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club
The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club is now operating on a sign in basis.
Workshop times on a Thursday are from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing of material and from noon to 3pm for Silversmithing. The Club has an annual field trip to the Chinchilla area for petrified wood. The petrified wood found in the Chinchilla area is regarded as some of the finest and colourful wood found anywhere in the world. This year, we will be going to Chinchilla in September. The reason for this is we are combining the wood searching trip with a bit of sightseeing. We intend to travel from Chinchilla to Miles, and then north from Miles to Gurulmundi. We will leave the highway here and travel through the Wildflower country. This is the time of the year when the wildflowers are at their peak in this area. This road through the forestry area takes us back to the Warrego Highway and we then travel east to Miles and Chinchilla. A brochure of this trip can be obtained from the Miles Visitor Information Centre. Chinchilla has two Fossicking Reserves where you can fossick for Petrified Wood and Fern. The Visitor Information Centre in Chinchilla has all the details. These two fossicking reserves are pay digs. Also, you must have a Queensland Fossicking Licence to dig for wood on these reserves. Information regarding our club can be obtained on our website: www.mitcheltondistrictsgemclub.wordpress.com If you would like to have a chat regarding our hobby, do not hesitate to contact John on 3351 1038 or 0407 582 980.

A Difference in Mindset
While some view the ageing process through the lens of increasing physical and mental limitation, others celebrate the wisdom that comes with age.
So how do we adapt more positively to life’s challenges? Australia’s oldest working artist, Guy Warren, has lived through the Great Depression, fought in World War II and emerged untouched by two global health pandemics. Though there are parts of ageing that he doesn’t enjoy, he still lives independently, holds a driver’s licence and enjoys a full work schedule. The difference is his mindset. ‘There’s always something to do. There’s always something to look forward to. One shouldn’t look back too much, one should instead look forward,’ he says.
• Maintain perspective; don’t let your thoughts run away with you • Engage in new activities • Cultivate new friendships or join a social group • Accept that some things are out of your control • Take action on the things you can impact • Practice stress-management techniques • Develop a spiritual practice such as prayer or meditation • Practice self-care through proper nutrition, exercise and good sleep habits • Volunteer your time to help others • Ask for help when you need it Source: The American Seniors Housing Association Submitted by Susanne Jones, Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD
So why do some of us approach getting older with a sense of excitement and others a sense of fear? The answer is resilience – or more specifically, the way we are able to adapt in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress.
The Flinders Centre for Ageing Studies 2015 report, Ageing Well: Building Resilience in Individuals and Communities in which they found that having a higher sense of purpose in life and a more optimistic outlook buffered against the association between negative life events. ‘People with more flexible coping styles who are able to both persist with attainable goals and redefine or replace unattainable goals, had lower levels of psychological distress irrespective of the number of negative life events they reported.’ Fortunately, resilience can be learned. A 2016 study published in Geriatric Nursing showed that there are several characteristics in three key categories shared by those aged 65 and over who were able to face challenges and come out the other side. Mental characteristics: Adaptive coping styles, gratitude, happiness, mental health and optimism. Social characteristics: Community involvement, contact with family and friends, a sense of purpose and positive relationships. Physical characteristics: The ability to remain physically independent and mobile, enjoy good health and the belief that they were able to age successfully. Tips for resilient ageing • Maintain an optimistic attitude

When Tennis Courts Dotted our Local Suburbs
History
An update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society by Andrew McMicking Ash Barty's fabulous Wimbledon win recently gave a sense of pride in us all. And to many long-time North West and Hills District locals, it also meant memories of days gone by when tennis courts dominated Brisbane suburbs. Does anyone out there remember the wonderful tennis courts at the Moonah Park at Mitchelton? Run for many years by the late, great Harry Evans. Or Geoff Olsson's Tennis Centre at Everton Park? What about Mal Anderson's at Grange? Not to mention the several backyard tennis courts that were frequently established at individual households. The post war years were a golden age in local tennis, with junior coaching classes, weekly social groups or more competitive forums like the Men's Metropolitan fixtures of a Saturday afternoon. At some point during the 1990’s, though, tennis courts and centres seemed to start disappearing from our community. Nowadays we still have the wonderful Pure Tennis Academy at Ferny Hills and the Roy Emerson Tennis Centre at Frew Park, Milton – the latter being the successor to the famous Milton Tennis Centre. Does anyone out there have photos of Brisbane/local tennis centres or home courts that are no longer with us? We‘d love to here from you. You can send digital copies to enoggerahistory@gmail.com Please continue to feel free to drop in to our premises at the Enoggera Memorial Hall (36 Trundle Street) any Thursday morning from 9.30am to 1pm to view our local history display.

News and Views from a Tramway Muse by David Fryer
When John Atkinson drove the first electric tram in Brisbane in July 1897, little did he know that he was kick-starting a whole new revolution in public transportation for Queenslanders. Unfortunately, the revolution was slow to catch on, it still is, and Queensland certainly wasn’t the first state to introduce EV’s despite his claim to the crown in a newspaper interview some time later. That honour went to Melbourne in 1889. Of course, other countries flicked the EV switch much earlier. The world's first electric tram appeared near Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1875, and Berlin delivered a similar system in 1881. In the same year that Queensland heralded the first electric tram, London boasted a fleet of electric taxi cabs. And we shouldn’t forget that an electric car was also the first road vehicle to exceed 100 km/h just two years later, in 1899. Anyway, that’s enough of the history lesson, now back to the future. The Brisbane Tramway Museum will hold a special EV Day in honour of Queensland’s first electric trolley bus, a Hopebodied Sunbeam, Old Number-One. The platinum-silver people parcel is celebrating her Platinum Birthday (her 70th) this year and we’re going to make it a day to remember. When: Sunday 22 August, from 12.30 pm to 7.30 pm. Where: The Brisbane Tramway Museum, Ferny Grove. You can ride historic trams from the museum’s own collection and vintage buses from the Queensland Omnibus and Coach Society. The latest BCC electric buses will be on show and you can also check out an electric truck. But there’s more..... *A Cavalcade of Electric Vehicles of all types: scooters, bikes, mobility vehicles, golf carts, forklifts and of course, electric cars. And if that’s not enough, you can watch a tram-pulling competition with teams from local gyms flexing their muscles. There will also be a sausage sizzle, freshly ground coffee, and cold drinks / ice creams. Bridge FM Radio Station will broadcast the event live and Cr Ryan Murphy, Chair of the BCC Transport committee, will represent the Lord Mayor. So, if you haven’t seen the light, or even if you have, make sure you add this thumping event to your must-do calendar. You can even bring your own EV, or whatever gizmo that turns people on. For more information about the Brisbane Tramway Museum and future events visit www.brisbanetramwaymuseum.org The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly sponsored by the Brisbane City Council. www.echo-news.com.au
THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development Construction Commences After many years of planning and negotiation, I am pleased to report that we broke ground on the Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development on the 27 of last month. Ferny Grove Central, as it will be called, is a mixed use residential, retail and entertainment precinct located on the site of the Ferny Grove Railway Station. Federal Members, Peter Dutton & Julian Simmonds were on hand along with Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey and Honeycombes Director, Peter Honeycombe, as we officially launched the build on what will be an important economic driver for our local community. The project, led by Honeycombes and the MaxCap Group, will inject $140 million into our local community and is projected to generate 700 full time equivalent jobs once completed with more than 800 on-site and off-site full time equivalent jobs during construction. Once complete, Ferny Grove Central will include a 42% increase in commuter car parking – in addition to dedicated residential and retail parking for the precinct. Parking will be reduced at the station during the construction, so patrons need to be aware and plan ahead. Rail services will not be affected. Bus services, likewise, will not be affected and still have additional capacity available. Wherever possible, the Ferny Grove Markets will still proceed as normal.
I couldn’t stop smiling on 27 July when we officially launched the build for Ferny Grove Central at the Ferny Grove Railway Station Active Game Day Fund The Palaszczuk Government has announced the Active Game Day Fund for local sporting clubs. Up to $150,000 will be available for community sports projects to assist clubs in being game ready. Applicants must have at least 20 per cent of their projects cost to contribute to the total funding required. The program, while still under development, will deliver quality, fit-for-purpose, ‘field of play’ participation-enhancing works that meet grassroot-level playing requirements. Examples of projects that could receive funding include developing or upgrading playing surfaces and installing or upgrading irrigation and field lighting. More information about the program’s eligibility and criteria will be outlined on the Department’s website: https://www. dtis.qld.gov.au/sport/funding-programs.
