Australia Day Awards Recognise Everton Park Local

Everton Park local, Jason Mayweather, has been acknowledged for his significant contribution to the local community by being awarded the coveted Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Achievement Award for 2021. This truly inspirational young man is helping to bring sport to Brisbane residents living with a disability. Born with cerebral palsy, Jason’s parents were told he would never walk or talk. However, by the age of nine, he had taught himself to speak, and just last year at 36 years of age, Jason took his first steps. Not one to let obstacles stand in his way, Jason has gone on to have a successful career in Boccia, being named Captain of Queensland Boccia team and representing Australia at four World Championships. He is also dedicated to encouraging, coaching and supporting people with a disability to join the sport. Over the last six years, Jason has volunteered with the Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association, an organisation dedicated to making active goals accessible and enhancing lives of people with a disability through health and fitness, sport, active recreation and building inclusive communities. Through his work, he has helped to break down stigma about disability by visiting schools as part of the Adaptive Activities School Program. One of the ways in which Jason does this is by introducing disability sports to children of all abilities. Well done Jason from all of the local community, you are a true inspiration!

Have Your Say! Off-road cycling strategy

Council is now seeking community feedback on the draft strategy for future off-road cycling opportunities and facilities around Brisbane. We are fortunate to have biodiverse bushland in the local area, such as the Chermside Hills, Milne Hill and Raven Street Reserve. Locals naturally gravitate to these areas to utilise them for a variety of recreation purposes, including off road cycling which has recently exploded in popularity. This draft strategy has been developed to create a balance between meeting demand for safe and accessible off-road cycling and preserving our natural habitats. Last year, residents and community groups were invited to share their ideas on the strategy, which is based on resident feedback. All residents are encouraged to get involved and have their say on the draft strategy. It can be found on the Brisbane City Council website at www.brisbane.qld.gov. au/things-to-see-and-do/outdoor-activities/riding-inbrisbane/brisbane-off-road-cycling-strategy Submissions close on the 28 February 2021 The Everton Echo delivers 14,500 copies per month of what matters to Everton Park and the surrounding areas. Celebrating a Centenary

2021 marks a milestone for local Kedron-based club, The Valley Hockey Club.

However, as the name might imply, the club was actually established in Fortitude Valley in 1921. Interested parties with military background held a meeting in the 9th Battalion Drill Hall in March of that year and the hockey club was formed. In the same year, the Queensland Hockey Association was established and competitive hockey games commenced in Brisbane. The Valley side played its first game on the 16th July 1921 and won the premiership that same year. The club were fortunate to have players who were very talented when it came to Hockey and continued with the club securing 12 premierships in a row. Fast forward 5 years and in 1926 the club evolved to include a ladies side called The Valley Women’s Hockey. Victoria Park was for many years the home of Hockey for club and school fixtures. In the early years it was also the home ground for the Valley Club. However, in 1958 the club obtained a lease for the park at Shaw Road, Kedron and have continued to use these facilities to this day. Unfortunately, when World War 1 commenced, a pause to hockey in Brisbane came about as a number of key players were serving in the forces. Nevertheless, at the end of the war hockey resumed and the Valley Club was lucky to retain its experienced players and continued on to win a number of premierships. Over the past 100 years both men and women have been selected for local, state and international representation, also filling administrative roles from local to international Associations. As part of the Centenary celebrations the club will be holding an ‘old rules’ hockey game at Shaw Park, Kedron on Saturday the 27 February 2021 commencing at 4pm. This is an open day for anyone to attend. The clubhouse will also be open from Monday 1st to the Friday the 5th March - 10am – 3pm to view memorabilia. The Opportune Arrival of a Wise Raccoon

By Georgia Wright

A world overrun by technology, a new generation of screen-addicts— this is the future our society may face. Yet we march toward this fate without a flicker of fear. Why?

Research upon research highlights the negative impacts that too much screen time can bring to children. Insomnia, behavioural problems, learning difficulties and poor overall health and wellbeing all share one common factor—a direct link to technology overuse. That’s where Jesse Hewitt and Julian Steincke come in. With one being a local literary genius and tutor for QUT’s Indigenous Unit, and the other a talented illustrator and graphic designer, the pair are well equipped in navigating the plains of creating an children’s book series about technology overuse. Julian Steincke and Jesse Hewitt As Australians re-emerged from ‘hibernation’ in the form of COVID-19 lockdowns, creators of Raymond The Raccoon so did the star of their series, Raymond The Raccoon. Ready to greet the nation, our new furry friend has been brought to life on the pages of the pair’s first instalment, Raymond The Raccoon – Misses His Friends. Jesse and Julians’ shared vision is to use this book—amongst their many others to come—as a ‘pedagogical vehicle’ that educates children on health and wellbeing. Running on a full tank of captivating illustrations and engaging narratives, their series is set to combat technology-use abuse amongst youths. Here is the blurb: ‘Follow Raymond, a loveable Raccoon, on a quest through the woods as he experiences some of the harsh realities involved in a culture dominated by screen obsession. Through following Raymond’s quest, children discover that their health, wellbeing, and friendships can be greatly improved by disconnecting from screens and reengaging with the real world.’ Already, ‘Raymond The Raccoon – Misses His Friends’ has had a great local reception, with our wonderful community sweeping under Jesse and Julians’ feet to hoist them up into the spotlight. Stoked about this accomplishment, Jesse reveals, ‘It's absolutely fantastic to have the first one done and dusted. … In saying that, we have already started on the next in the series!’ What’s more, they are also in the process of bringing the community another children’s book series—this one exploring life concepts such as mindfulness, physical health, and emotional wellbeing. And to end on an even more exciting note, Jesse and Julian are using this book to keep the world turning for budding bookworms. For every copy sold of ‘Raymond the Raccoon – Misses His Friends’, the co-creators will donate another book to an Australian child! So, I believe it is time to make like a raccoon and scurry down to their website at www.raymondtheraccoon.com.au to purchase this awesome new children’s book series. Enjoy your read!

Have you ever wanted to master the art of lawn bowls but not had a clue where to start?

Well, here is a fantastic opportunity. In March, on every Tuesday evening at 6pm, the Gaythorne Bowls Club will again be hosting FREE ‘Learn to Bowl’ sessions on the greens at the club. If you are unable to attend the March sessions, perhaps you will be available in May, every Wednesday morning at 9am, when the FREE Learn to Bowl sessions will be on again. Enjoy a relaxed couple of hours each time learning bowls basics under instruction. These are introductory sessions explaining and showing you how to roll the bowls, take grass and get the winning bowls beside the Jack. The only requirement is that participants wear flat-soled enclosed footwear. These Learn to Bowl sessions are just one of the many events organised by the Brisbane City Council for their GOLD Program (Growing Old Living Dangerously). The Program is aimed at people aged 50 and over, encouraging them to try new activities to help keep them active and healthy. All the different activities are listed in the BCC’s booklet available at all BCC Libraries and on the council’s website www.brisbane.qld. gov.au/community-and-safety/community-support/seniors It is always appreciated if people could telephone beforehand to advise of their attendance and to ensure rinks are available for everyone to play on. To book, phone Gaythorne Bowls Club on (07) 3855 2725 In addition, Gaythorne Bowls Club also encourages GOLD participants’ friends and family members, or other members of the public, if not in the 50 and over age group, to also come and join us on the greens at these times. Everyone who comes along for these introductory sessions on these days is able to play free of charge. 2021 is the 6th year that Gaythorne Bowls Club has been working with the BCC to host this activity and it is great to see so many people being introduced to the game of bowls. As it turns out, a few people decide to get more involved with the game and become members of Gaythorne Bowls Club or another bowls club closer to where they live. After the sessions, participants are always welcome to enjoy the comforts of the clubhouse and refreshments are also available.

TAX MATTERS

from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills

The Team at TaxArana wishes everyone a Happy New Year!

Now that we are now well and truly getting back into the new year, perhaps one of your new year’s resolutions should be to better manage your tax matters. Get those old returns done, or if you are in business, talk to us about getting a health check done for your business. If you are still working from home, the Federal Government has extended the .80c per hour for all running expenses. This means there is no need to calculate costs for specific running expenses. Multiple people living in the same house can claim this new rate. For example, a couple living together could each individually claim the 80 cents per hour rate. The requirement to have a dedicated ‘work from home area’ has also been removed. Claiming of motor vehicle expenses is one area that seems to cause of lot of confusion for taxpayers. If you use your vehicle for work purposes, you may be able claim. Visit www.ato.gov.au/uploadedFiles/Content/ IND/Downloads/Car-expenses-factsheet.pdf to discover what is claimable. The ATO does focus on this area when reviewing returns so it is important that you keep appropriate records if claiming these costs. In summing up, get those tax returns up to date whether you are an individual or in business. Also, if you lodge BAS returns get those lodgements up to date as well!

DESMOND FELIX KEMPSTER 10/1/1923 - 18/9/2020

A True War Hero Local to Everton Park

Desmond Felix Kempster

Desmond Felix Kempster, foundly known as Des, was born in Sandgate in 1923. He enlisted in 1941, at age 18, in the 2/14th Light Horse Regiment at Grovely, Brisbane.

However, when horses were phased out of the Army, the unit was renamed the 2nd Australian Cavalry Regiment which operated tracked vehicles called Bren Gun Carriers which were similar to a small tank but not enclosed. In 1943, Des was posted to the 16th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Battery in Townsville which was formed in defence of enemy aircraft attacks. He was subsequently posted to the 2nd Australian Advanced 2nd Echelon and served on Morotai Island in the Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia). He attained the rank of Corporal and remained on Morotai until the Japanese surrender in 1945. After the war, Des worked in various advertising and publishing companies and prior to his retirement in 1987 was Managing Editor of Motor Trader which is the monthly trade journal of the Queensland Motor Trade. With his late wife, Elsie, Des lived in Everton Park for 33 years prior to being a resident in aged care at Bald Hills. He is survived by his sister, 3 children, 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Upon his recent passing at age 97, Des was one of the last surviving WW2 veterans.

War Chronicles from Our Veterans

Lest We Forget! These simple words are spoken at ANZAC Day Commemorations every year. But how do we ensure that, as a nation, we don’t forget the sacrifices of these ordinary men and women whose actions and experiences were extraordinary? This Story Australia is a charity dedicated to capturing and preserving the significant moments of Australia’s history, as told by those who experienced it first-hand via high-quality video documentaries.

In collaboration with This Story, Echo News is delighted to bring you the third edition of our monthly segment that showcases just a few of the veterans whose full stories can be found at the Queensland State Library (short bio's are available on the This Story’s website at www.thisstory.com.au). If you are a veteran and would like to share your story, This Story would love to hear from you! Email jeff@thisstory. com.au or call 0439 661 448

John Russell Born 18th June 1920

John joined the AIF in 1939 and was a part of the ‘Special Expeditionary Force,’ which helped to keep the Suez Canal open (similar to the 1st AIF’s did in WWI). John then joined the ‘Darwin Over Land Mobile Force’ until he was diagnosed with Typhoid and discharged in 1941. From there, John joined the Merchant navy and was on the Aquanita, the first ship to sail into Pearl Harbour after the infamous attack. As an engineer, John ventured on to the Antarctic and helped establish bases on Heard Island (1948), Mawson (1952) and McMurdo (1958). John published a memoir of his expeditions in 2019 called ‘Antarctic Engineer.’

Stella ‘Faye’ Clarke Born 29th July 1918

Faye was born near Ulverstone on Tasmania’s northern Coast in 1918. Faye enlisted as a Nurse and, before she was deployed to a military hospital in Palestine, her father gave her some sound advice, telling her that if she wanted to be respected as a young lady she should never smoke or drink alcohol. Faye talks about collecting gum leaves at Gaza Ridge to remind her of home. She now resides at Seasons Retirement Living in Caloundra. At the time of our interview in May last year, Faye insisted on completing a 2km walk each day and credits that to her great long-lasting health.

Frank McCosker 30/03/1922 - 08/09/2020

Frank was his parents ninth child and he grew up on a dairy farm in the Glass House Mountains. Like many others, Frank lied about his age to join the army. He was deployed to New Guinea and recalls in exquisite detail the Battle of Milne Bay. Frank was discharged in the middle of 1949 and joined the Queensland Police force where he spent the next 33 years until his retirement in 1980. Sadly Frank passed away in September 2020. As previously mentioned, This Story is a not-for-profit charity. Their high quality documentaries are offered online 100% free of charge to the public and allow all Australians to develop a deeper understanding of some of Australian history’s most significant events. If you would like to offer support, donations can be made online at https://thisstory.com.au/donate/. Any amount - large or small - will go towards the cost of producing these historical documentaries. A stepping Stone to the Olympics for Synchro Star

Locals in The Hills and Pine Rivers district will be no stranger to Albany Creek local, Isabella Zanatta.

Whilst they may not know her name, they will know her by her sheer determination and quiet demeanor. Isabella spends up to 20-25 hours a week training whilst juggling university and work in the hope to achieve the biggest dream of all being an Olympian representing her country in Artistic Swimming (formerly known as Synchronised Swimming). However, this talented lady is no newcomer to representing her country since falling into the sport a mere 4 and a half years ago. She made her Australian team debut in 2017 (the Junior National Team) and secured a Gold Medal in New York along with her fellow Neptunes club team member, Madeleine Laurent. She then went onto achieve her next big goal of competing at the Junior World Championships at Budapest! Unfortunately, 2019 saw Isabella dislocate her knee that crushed her sights for the 2020 Olympic trials. Nevertheless, Isabella had a powerful ally by her side in the form of Krisztina (Kristi) Szedlak. Kristi is Australia’s Junior National Team Coach and Head Coach at Bella’s home training club of the Neptunes Synchronised Swimming. Under Kristi’s guidance, she was able to come back stronger both mentally and physically taking out both solo and duet events with Madeleine in the New Zealand Open and Malaysia Asian Open. Following the COVID-19 outbreak, normal training came to a halt. However, through the COVID isolation period, Kristi and Isabella worked over Zoom six days a week finding new ways to train in flexibility, endurance work and synchro skills. This enabled Isabella to build up a high level of fitness ensuring that when the pools opened she would come back stronger in an all-round aspect. The opportunity to trial for a reserve position for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics arose after girls retired from the original 2020 team. It is such an amazing opportunity for Isabella, and to work alongside the current 8 girls that will travel to Tokyo is an exciting experience. ‘No matter the outcome, I want to give it my all and walk away from these trials feeling proud of myself and knowing that I swam my best, that is all I can ask for,’ said Isabella. These trials for Isabella are an incredible opportunity and will no doubt be a stepping stone towards reaching her dream of one day becoming an Olympian.

Bocce looks forward to a better year than before

A monthly update from Mario DeMarco from the Newmarket Bocce Club To all our readers, have a happy new year.

As we look at another year, we hope it will be better than last year for all sports. Something we do well at the Newmarket Bocce Club is to have a great time! In 2020, on the last Wednesday of each month, we celebrated the birthdays for that month. Some antipasto, a beer ,and throw in a happy birthday tune, is a recipe that we always enjoy here at the club. Last year, due to COVID-19, the club did not hold their usual Christmas party. Nevertheless, on Wednesday 16th, at the annual birthday bash, the club committee decided to also include Christmas cheer and a bite to eat for all the bocce players. And boy did that go down well! Pictured is one of our club members Fausto Ceccato on the accordion. Fausto is a professional accordion player and for about an hour he played some beautiful songs for all to enjoy. Needless to say, we all had a great time. NEW NEW YEAR YOU,

Now that the mayhem of New Year’s Eve has faded and the Christmas spirit has waned, it is now time to seize the momentum of the new year and take positive steps towards your health. The Everton Echo is excited to present this heath and wellbeing guide that offers tips and some great local businesses that can help kick start your health goals for 2021!

A Mens Health Hub in the Heart of the Hills

TerryWhite Chemmart Arana Hills is thrilled to announce an exciting new service to join the ever increasing services offered by The Clinic Hub. The pharmacist manager Peter Fairgray, is bringing a first of its kind service to Queensland. Mens Health Downunder is a pharmacist-based program that has been offered to men in the ACT for nearly 10 years. This program has helped thousands of men with their health “downunder” since its launch, and is now poised to help men in Brisbane and beyond. Peter holds accreditation from the Mens Health Downunder team and will be offering a comprehensive Mens Health service. Three specialty areas make up the service, firstly pre- and post-Prostate surgery to set men up for the best recovery possible following the procedure. Secondly male incontinence, whether it has developed from old age, an injury, or post-surgery. And thirdly, erectile dysfunction issues, regardless of cause. You can also get assistance with a lesser known condition called Peyronie's disease. In

fact Peter can help with anything that relates to the health of the male anatomy! Private consultations can be booked with Peter to obtain information, medication options and medical devices, compliance understanding and to answer any questions for any of these conditions. “These are really sensitive issues and I know blokes sometimes don't like to talk about them, but who better to talk to than a pharmacist who has the knowledge and time to sit and talk, assist with rehab aids, improve compliance, provide solutions, and answer all your questions” says Peter. “It is distressing to think there are men - and their partners - in our community not doing all they can to have their best recovery and a close to “normal” life. Sometimes just starting the conversation is the hardest part, but I am here to help” Peter adds. TerryWhite Chemmart Arana Hills will be offering appointments to see Peter, book direct on the Men's Health Downunder website. Peter is also able to conduct telehealth consultations if you live outside of Brisbane or are unable to come to the pharmacy. This new service will also assist with couples going to see our Fertility pharmacist Kylie who runs a Fertility Hub at the pharmacy, to help the men whose partners are going through IVF treatments. Kasey, our credentialled diabetes educator says it may also be of interest to our diabetes service customers - as men with diabetes are at increased likelihood of having erectile dysfunction. If you, or a man in your life would benefit from meeting with Peter, please take the first important step and make a booking today. Visit in store at 2 Patricks Road, Arana Hills, call 3351 6100 or visit www.MensHealthDownunder.com.au for more information

New day rehab unit offers respite to Queenslanders in pain As part of their recent $55 million expansion, North West Private Hospital has opened the new Day Rehabilitation Unit which features a new exercise class specifically tailored to help those struggling with the aches and pains of arthritis. Arthritis affects 3.6 million (15%) Australians and, one in five (22%) also experience high to very high levels of psychological distress as a result. Exercise is greatly beneficial for people with osteoarthritis and is considered the most effective non-drug treatment for improving movement and reducing pain in patients. As well as providing reduced joint pain, exercise can also improve joint mobility and aid better mental health. Led by physiotherapists and exercise physiologists, the benefits offered to arthritis sufferers through these classes may include reduced joint pain, greater strength and function, improved joint mobility, weight control and better mental health. Graeme Walker, Allied Health Manager of the North West Private Hospital Day Rehabilitation Unit, is proud to be offering a tailored approach to improving arthritis symptoms in patients. “The launch of this new unit has allowed us to offer new, diverse services to a greater number of our patients. “Many Australians aren’t aware that there are simple proactive ways to address arthritis, long before it reaches the point of being a debilitating condition, and ideally preventing that entirely,” said Mr Walker.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is similar yet very different to mat based Pilates. Reformer Pilates is done using the Pilates reformer machine and is generally more intense and more dynamic than mat-based Pilates as it adds resistance to the Pilates exercises via the use of the springs which form part of the machine.

WHO NEEDS AN EXTRA PAIR OF HANDS IN THE HILLS?

Apprentice Carpenter Jake Gilliland, Qualified Carpenter Nick Gimenez and Qualified Carpenter Len Herschell are on hand to help with all your handyman requirements

Even with COVID-19 still rampaging across our nation, the demand for Australian tradesmen and handymen has shown no hint of easing. North Brisbane local, Len Herschell, grabbed hold of this knowledge and ran with it, making the wise decision to expand his already booming business—Hire A Hubby Ferny Hills—to cover our needs.

In terms of handyman requirements, Hire A Hubby is your one-stop shop. Putting our community in trusted hands, the business offers its services across residential, commercial, and real estate industries. From the 1st of March, Len has made the bold yet beneficial decision to become the franchisee of Hire A Hubby Everton Park, taking his quality services to new lengths across the North West. good use. He has completed everything from routine maintenance, to home repairs—such as plastering and painting—to overseeing larger construction projects. These can include full-scale kitchen renovations that maximise value before sale. Each and every job has been carried out in a timely manner and to a high standard—hence Len’s growing reputation within the community.

In turn, this has led to exponential growth of the business. Len now employs seven staff members, including three qualified carpenters, one shop fitter, and an apprentice carpenter, with this number set to soar over the coming years. "The needs of the local community are always changing, and with the vast range of services we specialise in, Hire A Hubby will continue to provide the best solution possible to the community within north-west Brisbane,” explains Len. Meet the Women behind the Nest

Since 2014, the Nest Community has served as a creative hub for women throughout Everton Park and beyond. In each issue over the coming months, we will introduce the wonderful women behind this organisation, and share with you some of their stories.

Lynne Wynbergen

Lynne Wynbergen is a dedicated volunteer for the Nest, who provides her skills and steady hands in the affordable workshops she teaches. Lynne’s grandmother got caught up in the American Quilt ‘Revival’ of the 70s, and thus quilting became her first love. Since then, she has branched out into all types of handmade artistries. Lynne is a gifted artisan in several crafts, and takes great pride in sharing her wealth of knowledge with those who are eager to learn. In her workshops, she encourages experimentation and reminds others to just give themselves time to enjoy the process of making. Every Nest workshop has 1 facilitator per 3 students. This makes possible a unique aspect of mentorship between each student and their facilitator(s), when they connect, share and learn meaningfully. Lynne often reminds children who are learning to crochet that it’s OK if their attempt is not perfect. “It’s hand-made. It’s just important to have a go.” She laughs, remembering one adult participant who repeated her mantra “I’m not a machine!” back to her at a different workshop, months later.

Pauline Stockwell

Pauline Stockwell truly loves being a part of the Nest Community, and enjoys passing on her knowledge to future generations. The Nest’s generous Pauline first discovered her love for sewing at the age of 6. She was inspired by her self-taught grandmother, who continued sewing into her 90’s. Pauline still recalls being over the moon on her 16th birthday, when her mother gave her own electric machine. Like many, she made all her childrens’ clothes and taught her daughter from age 6 to sew, stitch and mend. These days, she enthusiastically shares her talent for sewing and teaches people what she sees as an essential life skill at her regular workshops. One of Pauline’s greatest pleasures is seeing new volunteers having a go and gaining confidence in themselves and their work.

Lou James

Lou James, a long-time organic gardener and accomplished seamstress, volunteers for the Nest Community once a week. As a teenager, Lou began making her own clothes when she couldn’t find trousers that fitted properly, and stumbled upon her talent for handmade practices. Her flair in handmade crafts is much appreciated at the Nest. She has already sewn her way through 5 machines! Whether helping customers to find just the right material or lending a hand at workshops, Lou finds real pleasure in her involvement with the community. She enjoys the social atmosphere at the Nest and her vast knowledge of dress-making and using patterns always makes her a great source of advice for novices in the handmade arts.

To find out more about the Nest Community, or to book your spot in one of their upcoming workshops, head to Eventbrite or www.nestcommunity.org.au

Hidden Gems in Redcliffe Peninsula

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

A beautiful Agate from North Queensland. Just one example of the gems that will be on show in the Arana Hills Library.

The Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club re opened their clubrooms on Saturday 23rd January, a bit later than expected, due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

If you visit the Arana Hills Library in February, you will see a display by the members of the club. This display consists of rough and polished gemstone specimens, silverwork and other lapidary work done by members. People often ask, ‘Where can I go fossicking around Brisbane?’ Years ago, there were several places where lapidary material could be obtained rather easily. Now it is probably down to one location - the beaches of the Redcliffe Peninsula. The beach north from the Redcliffe jetty is the place to start. Just walk along the beach when the tide is going out and look for small pieces of agate and chalcedony in the gravel line that the wave action has left. After rough seas is a good time to look, as the wave action stirs up the gravels on the beach. If you are more adventurous, then try the spit at Scarborough at a very low tide. Here, you can find larger pieces of agate and chalcedony. If you are lucky. Years ago there was a Jasper farm at Upper Coomera, a Rhodonite deposit in the same locality and lots of places in the Tweed Valley and around Ipswich in the Bremmer River where petrified wood, gate, etc could be found. The clubrooms now have a fresh new look and welcome new members who may wish to join the club. Welcome to ‘Grab that Grant’, a monthly column brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall. Carolyn is the founder of the Little Project Management Company, and has a wealth of knowledge into the industry. This month Carolyn chats about how to ‘get what you want’

Guide to Getting What You Want

How often do you express your true needs and wants?

Over the holidays, I made sure I set aside a lot of time to spend with my two little boys, who are 3 and 6. One day I felt like I needed a break to recharge. My typical tricks of hiding in my room for ten minutes or pretending to hang out the washing were not working, so I called on my husband to take a break from work so I could head outside for a quick walk. It was exactly what I needed. So, what does my notso-perfect parenting have to do with grants? In this instance, I asked for something I needed – I don’t always – but this time I did. However, I see many for-purpose organisations either asking for what they need only once, or not asking at all. They have amazing ideas and communitychanging projects that they want to deliver, but they do not necessarily ask for what they need to make it happen. If you are part of a community organisation or charity, how do you ask for what you need or want? Whether it is money to get a project funded, volunteers to set up an event, or resources to support your organisation—how do you approach it? For example, it could involve nurturing an engaged alumni and sharing your project ideas with them, or regularly updating past funders on what you are doing or sharing on Facebook what you are looking for and why this is important to you. Sometimes when you ask for what you need, you might get a ‘no’. Actually, if you get into the habit of asking for what you need, it is guaranteed that you will hear the word ‘no’ more often. And this can be hard when we are so passionate about our cause and what we do. Hearing ‘no’ is what puts people off continuing to apply for grants and asking for what they need. But being bold and putting yourself out there means a ‘no’ could as some point turn into a ‘yes’. In Jennifer Cohen’s Tedx talk ‘The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life’, she talks about the 10% rule. To try for what you want 10 times. The secret is being comfortable in being told ‘no’ nine out of ten times. The fact is that you miss out on 100% of the opportunities that you don’t go for. So, how might your organisation benefit if you tried asking 10 times for what you want? The role you play in the community goes two ways; you have the responsibility to give and to receive. When we are clear on what it is that we would like to receive—and we communicate this—we help create a thriving, cohesive community. So, ask away! And don’t wait until someone asks you, or afterthought to a post, or until you have reached the very end of a conversation—bring your asking forward! Why not ask today? If you would like to have a chat with me, please email me on carolyn@lpmcompany.com.au.

How to Handle Herbs

From the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Coronavirus restrictions permitting, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, in Trundle Street on the 4th March and 1st April.

The guest speaker for March is Debbie Aitcheson from the Chilli Patch in Minden. She will talk about herbs in conjunction with alternatives to use when what the recipe requires is not available. Sometimes when these plants are going to seed or are out of season, dried or frozen substitutes do not give the desired flavours - Debbie has advice about solving this problem. At past meetings, Debbie has delighted those present with samples of her cooking. Who knows if she'll have more tasty morsels to sample?! The main activities for February are mowing and controlling weeds. Most areas around this district are receiving some rain so watering is needed only when necessary. Keep up mulching the garden to save evaporation. Also prune Hibiscus and other shrubs that were pruned heavily last year. If you prefer to raise your own vegetable and flower seedlings start preparation now. Pansies, cineraries, petunias, allysum and snapdragons are some annuals to consider. In the vegetable line there's beetroot, cabbage, sweet corn and celery The meeting commences immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information, please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

THE FERNY REPORT

by Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Honeycombes Property Group will shortly announce the successful tender to build the project and will announce the build date. The TOD will provide a massive injection of jobs into our local community with 700 full-time-equivalent jobs created during the build and a further 700 full-time-equivalent ongoing jobs generated by the complex once completed. Honeycombes have now signed most of the anchor tenants to the project and have opened expressions of interest in the residential options on site. Negotiations and planning for the TOD have taken many years and have required a collaborative approach across all levels of government. Thank you to everyone in the community for your interest and support to get this project to the build stage at last. This will be a tremendous asset to our community, which will provide the jobs, amenities and car parking spaces we need into the future.

School updates TOD Update

There was fantastic news over the Christmas/New Year period as the final hurdle to the Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development (TOD) commencing construction has now been cleared. Brisbane City Council (BCC), the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have all signed off on the $120 million project. Following the final approvals received by the BCC in late 2020, the TOD received the all-clear to proceed to construction in early 2021.

Love to Sing?

Schools across the length and breadth of the Ferny Grove Electorate have received classroom upgrades and building completions with many of the maintenance backlogs completed over the Christmas holidays – just in time for the start of the new school year. With 2020 now behind us, most students and parents will be well-versed with the quick actions school administrations must take to deal with the changing environment COVID-19 has presented us with. Make sure you sign up to updates from your children’s schools as each school has different capacities and numbers and must take all factors into consideration when determining policies regarding conduct on the school grounds. I wish all the best for the class of 2021!

THE SERENATA SINGERS WOULD LOVE TO MEET YOU!
