PROUDLY LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED!
Earlier this year, for approximately four months, the Gaythorne Bowls Club was closed - just like many other sporting clubs and businesses in the Mitchelton area. However, the club is now able to operate safely with a COVID-19 plan in place. Feedback was received from the local community in September - at the club’s big night of entertainment in association with the Brisfest Festival - that suggested that the Bowls Club should hold more community activity nights for the general public. Parents mentioned that many residents are looking for places that are child-friendly and where they can have fun sharing an activity with their children and friends. With this in mind, the Gaythorne Bowls Club is delighted to introduce an ‘Activity Night’ on the evening of Friday 13th November. There will be free live entertainment, barefoot bowls, street food and the clubs new caterer will be introduced. The whole community is welcomed so pop down, relax and unwind after a another long working week! The cool Tuesday evenings in October have also been enjoyed by a small group of locals who attend the club each week to discover the basics of bowls and have some healthy outdoor fun and exercise. These free ‘Come and Try’ sessions are part of the Brisbane City Council’s GOLD program. Although the sessions are primarily aimed at persons in the 50 + age group, anyone below that age is also welcome to come and join in. Future free GOLD Program sessions will be held in March and April next year. Community generosity shines in the form of The Kindness Cart
Amid all the doom and gloom surrounding the coronavirus, it can be hard to keep a positive mindset. But thankfully, out of the chaos, have emerged many inspiring initiatives from within our community and ‘The Kindness Cart’ is just one of them.
The Kindness Cart is a community pantry whereby nonperishable goods have been donated by local businesses and community members for ANYONE in need. Locals doing it tough are welcome to take as much or as little from the pantry as they need at no charge. Items within each cart may include; food items, toiletries, pet food and other necessities. The idea was inspired by the plight of a few local people in the Stafford and Stafford Heights Community Facebook group. As the community began to feel the localised impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the group were seeing a lot of people finding themselves in the position of having to ask for help in order to put food on the table, sometimes for the first time in their lives. However, where there were sad stories of helplessness from within the Facebook group, there was an outpouring of support from other local people and businesses who wanted to help in any way that they could. Tegan Guthrie, founder of the Stafford and Stafford Heights Community group, said that the idea of the community pantry stemmed from local chappy Dan from Stafford State School. He shared an initiative his church was running - a community pantry that members of the congregation kept stocked and available to anyone in need and suggested the Facebook community try and do something similar in Stafford. ‘I put a call out in the Facebook group for ideas and suggestions
Page 8 - November 2020, The Everton Echo
Jake McIntosh, co-owner of The Stafford General Store with Kathryn Harrison from the NOW Business Group and Linda Scanlan from Madeleine Hicks Real Estate (also part of the NOW Business Group and a patron of the Kindness Cart initiative) at one of the Kindness Cart’s located at The Stafford General Store
of how we could potentially facilitate this community pantry. Kathryn Harrison from the NOW Business Group then, not only suggested we house it at a local cafe, but went a step further and organised our first venue - Maple Cafe on Minimine Street, Stafford,’ explains Tegan . From there, the Kindness Cart initiative was born. With support from the NOW Business Network and the Stafford and Stafford Heights Community Facebook group, further carts have been rolled out around the local area. Carts can now be found in three locations which include:- The Maple Cafe, Silky Oak Espresso, and The Stafford General Store (addresses listed at end of article). NOW Business Network members Pieta Royal, Sharon Knol and Kathryn Harrison liaise with the cafe owners and keep tabs on how things are going. Furthermore, this intiative goes one step further and there is also a coffee/ sandwich tab at each cafe. Those in need can order a coffee or sandwich which is free of charge - just say ‘Aloha’ when ordering. Jake McIntosh, co-owner of The Stafford General Store, is delighted to be able to contribute to this community initiative. ‘If you are experiencing hardship and are in need of a pick-meup, simply say ‘Aloha’ to the barista when placing your coffee order. The coffee will be free, no questions asked,’ said Jake. Customers are also welcome to pay it forward and contribute to the ‘Aloha’ coffee account or donate non-perishable dry goods to the Kindness Cart. ‘It is mind blowing to think that a simple post on a Facebook group a few months ago has grown into something like this in such a short time AND in the middle of a pandemic. It really goes to show just how much can be accomplished when we work together for the common good. I'm excited to see where the initiative goes in the future and what we can put together for Christmas!’ said Tegan. Kindness Carts can be found in the following locations: The Stafford General Store: 609 Stafford Rd, Stafford Maple Cafe: 10 Minimine St, Stafford Silky Oak Espresso: 48D Ainsdale St, Chermside West If you would like to help support the Kindness Cart intiative, you can either contribute via the ‘pay it forward’ coffee tab or donate a non-perishable grocery items to one of the carts. www.echo-news.com.au

Boost in health care treatment options for Brisbane’s north
North West Private Hospital has completed its $55 million expansion after reaching capacity in 2019. The expansion, which caters for the ongoing population boom on Brisbane’s northside, will enable more complex procedures with new technological support.
The redevelopment will vastly increase the hospital’s capacity – from 101 to 150 beds, enlarging the infusion / oncology service from 6 to 10 chairs, increasing the number of theatres and procedure rooms from 9 to 14 and including the commissioning of a new six-bed Intensive Care Unit. North West Private Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Chris Murphy, said the development was great news for residents of Brisbane’s northern suburbs. ‘We are experiencing huge population growth in this region, and being just 9 kilometres from the CBD, North West Private provides an excellent choice for residents wanting world class private health facilities close to home. ‘This project not only expands and modernises our existing facilities, but also includes the construction of a new multi-storey building including a new Day Rehabilitation Unit and Early Parenting Centre,’ Mr Murphy said. The hospital can now provide further sound support in clinical decisions, surgical confidence and it can help enhance patient care.
The newly expanded North West Private Hospital
The expansion also includes a new multi-storey carpark that will provide more than 350 free carparks to staff, patients, and visitors. ‘It was important to us to maintain free parking here at North West Private Hospital because it’s just one less thing patients and their families need to worry about - we’d rather they focus on their health,’ Mr Murphy said. The hospital has also introduced the latest Stryker Advanced Imaging technology in two of their new operating theatres - a first for any hospital in Queensland. ‘These are the first theatres in Queensland to combine the market-leading technology of 4K fluorescence visualisation with an improved image process flow. It means the surgeon is able to visualise anatomy in a way they have not been able to before and will really enhance the patient’s experience,’ Mr. Murphy said. This redevelopment means that Brisbane’s northside now has access to the state of the art, quality care in maternity, cancer care, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, paediatrics, plastic surgery, dermatology, and gastroenterology.

GRAB THAT GRANT!
Welcome our monthly column, Grab that Grant, which provides invaluable information about accessing and applying for funding. This information is brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall. As founder of the Little Project Management Company, Carolyn has a Carolyn McCall wealth of knowledge and an insight into the industry.
‘Council Grants - Help is at hand!’
This month I spoke to the Moreton Bay Regional Council Grants Team. I always like to encourage community organisations to build a relationship with potential funders and Local Council. Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Grants Team are a wealth of knowledge, are really enthusiastic about programs happening in the community, and are all really, really friendly!! Here is our conversation: Are you open to answering questions about or discussing project ideas with community organisations? Yes! As a local Council, we like to hear what community organisations are working on or considering in our region. What many people don’t know is that you can talk to us before you start an application. Once organisations have started an application in SmartyGrants, grants officers can view the draft application (with permission and at the request of the applicant). We can check that all questions have been answered and all required documentation has been attached. Do you like seeing collaborations between community organisations in the region? Can you help organisations make connections within the region?
MLM Finance Solutions MORTGAGE & FINANCE BROKERS
Most funding bodies like to see a collaborative approach in the delivery of projects, and this is the same with Council. Sharing knowledge and resources can strengthen the delivery of a project, encourage greater participation, avoid duplication of resources, and result in better outcomes for the community. Council may also be able to help organisations who seek information about similar groups in the region. What are your main tips and tricks to being successful in a grant round? 1. Read the guidelines to ensure the project fits the grant program objectives. We usually have our funding rounds decided well ahead of time, so you can always check our grants and funding webpage and plan in advance. 2. Ensure you understand the requirements of the grants program. It’s so easy to miss some really important things. For instance, what is eligible expenditure—and what isn’t. Never forget to read the guidelines and if you have any questions, give us a call! 3. Be clear about what you propose to do and what the purpose of your project is, and make sure to highlight its benefits to the organisation and local community. Sometimes, you know a project so well yourself that you forget that others need the background information on how it all fits together. 4. Demonstrate the need for the project—what evidence have you got that supports the identified need? Are you also able to demonstrate the support of the community or your target group?
Does it make a difference how big or small a community organisation is applying for a grant? We welcome applications from organisations of all sizes. What we look for are applications that can demonstrate a benefit to residents of the Moreton Bay Region, show value for money, and provide evidence that they can undertake the project. I would love to hear from more organisations doing interesting things – if you want to chat about grants, tell me about programs you are running, or just want to say hello, please contact me at carolyn@lpmcompany.com.au

Positivity Prevails at Everton Park resident Arana Netball named Brisbane's best
A monthly update from Arana Netball Club
Covid may have disrupted our netball season but it certainly didn’t dampen our spirits!
As soon as we were given the go ahead to return to netball, our players and officials could not wait to get underway. With restrictions still in place at the end of the nine week blast, our annual trophy presentation evening was modified to suit. In true Arana Netball style, everyone The 2020 Echo News Positive or adapted to join in Pointless award winner is on a different type of Isabella Barton event. One by one teams arrived at the courts to hear words of praise from their proud coaches and receive their 2020 medallion. We were also very fortunate to have the support of Echo News in acknowledging a very special club member for our ‘Positive or Pointless’ award. Positive or Pointless, what is it? It’s showing good sportsmanship on and off the court. It’s approaching new, different or difficult experiences with a positive attitude. It’s parents/coaches and officials being proud of players’ achievements, regardless of the scoreboard, and it’s being part of something that supports self-esteem and personal growth. I am proud to say that this behaviour is demonstrated across Arana Netball Club at all levels, however this does make choosing just one recipient each year a little challenging! This year’s Echo News Positive or Pointless award recipient showed the type of courage and resilience that models the very reason sport plays an integral role in personal growth. It’s our pleasure to announce the recipient of the 2020 Echo News Positive or Pointless award is Isabella Barton. Each week Isabelle's confidence grew and her enthusiasm to take the court with some very experienced players is a credit to her resilience. Isabella was 100% a team player and her growth as a netballer this year was significant. Congratulations Isabella!

Jared Taylor from Everton Park has capped a sensational season on local hockey fields by being named Brisbane’s standout male player of the year.
The 25-year-old, who plays for Commercial Hockey Club, has won the coveted Brisbane Hockey Association Best & Fairest Medal. Introduced 40 years ago, the medal is awarded to the player who polls the most votes from match umpires, allocated in a 3-2-1 format after each Brisbane Hockey League Division 1 game. Taylor polled 24 votes for the COVID-interrupted season – reduced from 18 fixtures to 14 – to finish well clear of Max Harding from Pine Rivers St Andrews (17 votes) and Labrador’s Blake Wotherspoon (15 votes). It is the biggest winning margin for the best and fairest medal since Taylor’s former Commercial Cobras teammate Jacob Burns won by a massive 11 votes seven years ago. Taylor is the fifth Commercial player to win the award following Bruce Robertson, Jason Greene, Jacob Burns and Ian Schulz. The striker has come close to winning the award in previous seasons, finishing fourth in the player of the year voting in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and placing in the top 10 the past two years. He scored 21 goals for Commercial in regular season matches this year including a career-best eight goals in a 9-2 win over Redcliffe in Round 7. The brother of Australian Hockeyroos player Renee Taylor, Taylor has played almost 160 first-grade games for Commercial since making his Division 1 debut in 2011, scoring at a rate of one goal per game. He has won the Australian Hockey League with the Queensland Blades and also represented Northern Territory Stingers at national level. Taylor competed for the Brisbane Blaze team in last year’s inaugural Hockey One national league. The former Everton Park State School student has also played indoor hockey for Queensland.

How to start talking about mental health
We all know that tending to our mental health is equally as important as our physical health.
For many older Australians, depression and feelings of isolation or loneliness can be common. More likely to experience physical illness or personal loss, our elderly loved ones sometimes find themselves struggling to ask for help. I encourage everyone to check in with their older relatives, friends, and neighbours and start the conversation about their mental health and wellbeing. Reduce the stigma Discussions around mental health are becoming more common place, however it is still seldom talked about amongst older generations. Some older people have never spoken about how they feel because it wasn’t normalised when they were growing up. Others worry that they will be treated differently if they talk to someone about how they are feeling. Not wanting to feel like a burden, they often keep feelings of sadness and seclusion to themselves. If you have a loved one that you suspect may be suffering from loneliness or depression, talking can be the easiest way to reduce stigma. Normalising conversations around emotions can make it easier to identify risks and manage problems. But these conversations can be tricky. Here are some tips on how to ask if someone is okay. Find a safe space Think about a quiet, safe space to have the discussion. Let them know that you are there to talk about how they are feeling, be clear you are there to listen, and provide support.
Show you care Beyondblue provides a number of conversation starters that encourage a healthy discussion about how your loved one is feeling, such as “You haven’t seemed yourself lately – is everything OK?” Take action At the end of the conversation, work out what help you can provide. This may be as simple as a weekly phone call or helping with weekly tasks like gardening or shopping. Ask an expert Friends and family can be a great help during difficult times, but it is important to get expert advice. Consider encouraging them to book an appointment with their GP to discuss the feelings they are experiencing. Beyondblue also provides a range of free advice and information to help support your loved one. Talking about isolation and depression can sometimes be a daunting task for both sides, but starting a conversation can be the first step to better health for your loved one. Bocce as a spectacular school sport A monthly update from the Newmarket Bocce Club
Bocce was introduced into Australia by migrants in the early 1900’s. It has since developed from a recreational game to a fully-fledged competitive sport. As early as 1970, the game was being played on a national level and, as early as 1972, Australia became part of the world stage of bocce. Victoria hosted the first World championships in 1972, organised by Bocce Australia. The photo below shows a game of bocce in progress, the Newmarket Bocce club is in the blue polo and the Redlands Bocce club is in white with the sponsor

as a spectator. The righthand photo depicts a segment of a game of bocce of doubles. It shows how professional the players are when it comes to bowling. Four players, three bocce balls each. It’s spectacular, accurate bowling, A segment of a game of bocce of doubles but bocce Vuolo also encompasses throwing (this is when you throw the ball in the air to eliminate an opponent’s ball). This changes the game tactics, where the opponent would possibly open up the game of play and this would certainly be appealing to the younger generation. So this brings me to Bocce as a school sport. Bocce needs an injection of young guns. The only equipment required by players is bocce balls and a jack (kitty). The actual bocce ball can differ from metal to composite. At our club we play Vuolo and use steel bocce balls. Bocce can be well suited to school children because equipment is inexpensive and both sexes can participate. There would be some children that may not be able to play some of the vigorous and demanding school sports, however bocce may be suitable. There may be four to six children that may wish to seriously take up the sport and the club has a qualified coach. The Newmarket Bocce clubs courts can be utilised on the schools sporting day. The physical aspects of the game are challenging, demanding technique, stamina and skill. Gamesmanship is also required to apply an appropriate tactical plan. Bocce provides for the development of basic skills and co-ordination, along with systematic growth and mental development through coaching programs. If you want to know anything about bocce please contact Mario 0403 257 325 or Bill 0431 458 481

Read all about your ancestors in Newspapers
By Susie der Kinderen from the Queensland Family History Society Newspapers are an invaluable source of information for family historians.
They record all kinds of things, events, weddings, deaths, obituaries, crimes, inquests, sports and much more. Even the advertisements are interesting and give us an idea of costs of items, products and appliances that may have been used. Newspaper articles also give us an idea of the social, political, and economic triggers that were happening at the time. Australia is well and truly spoilt by the newspaper database TROVE, which can be found online at https://trove.nla. gov.au/ TROVE is a repository of Australia’s historic newspapers and contains publications from our cities and regional newspapers. These newspapers have been digitized and are searchable. Access to the newspapers ends about the mid 1950’s when the current copyright laws kicked in. My Grandfather died before I was born and it was great to get to read about him from his obituary and tributes from family, friends and clients. The articles I read showcased a man who was a natural shot with a rifle and did well in the local shooting club competitions. His remarks from an interview, in which he came across as a humble man with a good sense of humour. Queensland libraries provide access to newspapers on their websites. They can include newspapers from Australia and overseas. You can read the Melbourne Age or the London Times in the comfort of your own home or from any country. The State Library of Queensland provides access to several historic newspaper databases and these are great for family research. I recently found one of my persons of interest participating in a five-mile bicycle race in Cardiff, Wales in 1881. The bicycle was a penny-farthing. It was a lovely surprise to know that his hobby was racing these unusual bikes that apparently were often in races and were considered quite comfortable. Just mounting and dismounting seemed perilous! Tremendous tools of the trade
News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club
The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has noticed an increase in membership since the COVID-19 pandemic commenced. We are grateful to the increase in new members for it has helped to spread the burden of costs which the club has had to incur to keep the organisation functioning.
As the weather is warming up, many members are aiming for the indoors side of the hobby as compared to the cooler months where lapidary/rockhounds tend to go out and about looking for gemstone materials. Many of our members have a tumbler, saw or grinder at home, as it is quite easy to spend an hour or two working with these machines in the warmer months. However, there are still aspects of the hobby where it is beneficial to be a member of a club. Our club has large saws which individuals don’t generally have at home. We have a 24” and a 16” slab saw which take up considerable space and are both capable of cutting larger rocks. Also, in our workshop we have a reciprocating lap which, besides being expensive to buy, takes up a considerable amount of space. These laps are used to polish flat surfaces of rocks after they have been cut on a diamond saw. These laps need silicon carbide grit placed on the lap and water in order to grind the stone down. As the grit gets worn finer you have to clean the lap off and place a finer grit on the lap until the stone is ready to polish. Generally, the lap is turned over, and on the other side there is a piece of carpet which is used to polish the stones with the addition of a polish compound. This compound is Tin Oxide and it is mixed with water. The time to polish the stones depends on the hardness of the stones but generally six to eight hours on the carpet will be sufficient. Information regarding our club can be obtained on our website: www.mitcheltondistrictsgemclub.wordpress.com or our Facebook Page: Mitchelton and District Gem Club Inc. If you would like to have a chat to someone regarding our hobby, do not hesitate to contact John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

Lest We Forget! These simple words are spoken at ANZAC Day Commemorations every year. But how do we ensure that as a nation, we don’t forget the sacrifices of these ordinary men and women whose actions and experiences were extraordinary? Laurie Woods Born 26th December 1922 I Born Deloraine, Tasmania Laurie Woods was a member of the 460 Squadron of Bomber Command. He was recognised with an Immediate Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross for flying a Bomber back to England after the pilot was wounded by shrapnel. Lawrie recounts how PTSD affected his relationships and personal life for many years after his service. He has lived on the south side of Brisbane in the Sunnybank area and you can often find him signing one of his four published novels at a Dymocks book store.
Richard Trevor Martin 15/03/1923 - 24/02/2020 I Born Mulvern, Victoria Dick was called up into the Army on the 5th of February 1943 and eventually transferred to the Air Force. He shares some tragic stories of his time in Bomber Command. On one such occasion he developed a burst appendix on a training flight and returned to base. The next day, whilst Dick was hospitalized for his illness, his crew went up without him and never returned, crashing into the North Sea. Dick reflects on a happy life in Queensland and has volunteered at the Sunnybank RSL Sub-branch right up to his death in February this year.
John Cyril Briggs Born 10th July 1924 I Born Leicester, England
John joined the Cubs and Scouts at a young age, and it was from there that he gained the skills that served him well for life. He was recruited into the RAF and recounts many humorous stories of times with mates. Upon moving to Australia John was employed as an Engineer with the Brisbane City Council and is responsible for the Centenary Bridge at Jindalee and its rebuild after the floods of 1974. John lives in Fairview Retirement Living at Pinjarra Hills. As previously mentioned, This Story is a not-for-profit charity. Their high quality documentaries are offered online 100% free of charge to the public and allow all Australians to develop a deeper understanding of some of Australian history’s most significant events. If you would like to offer support, donations can be made online at https://thisstory.com.au/donate/. Any amount - large or small - will go towards the cost of producing these historical documentaries. Alternatively, if you are a local business and would like to "Sponsor a Story" please get in touch! Leaving their stories untold would not only be a shame to our current generations but would deny future generations the opportunity to see history come to life through these courageous men and women.

GRINSTEAD PARK ASBESTOS REMOVAL
As anyone who has renovated a home containing asbestos knows that the removal process can be a time consuming, expensive and nerve wracking experience. Imagine how Council felt when it discovered asbestos in our public spaces and waterways spanning hundreds of square metres! The hazardous waste was first detected within the confines of Grinstead Park along Kedron Brook in 2017 after routine inspections undertaken as part of Council’s parks maintenance program. Council found materials rising to the surface of the soil. Further investigations occurred which found just how much soil within the parkland contained buried asbestos – dating back to a time when knowledge about just how deadly asbestos is was far less. Council immediately fenced off the southern section of Grinstead Park between Lenna Street and Raymont Road (on the eastern side of the creek) to limit further disturbance and unauthorised access, this included the informal walkway on the eastern creek bank (parallel to Birrimba Street). To ensure the safety of today’s and future generations, Council sprang into action with works that included securing the material with geofabric to provide a physical barrier to further spreading before creating a detailed Asbestos Management Plan. Interim management works were completed by mid-2018 along with continual borehole testing completed by mid-2019. Preparation work was able to begin by establishing a site access, machinery decontamination and construction laydown areas. This work unfortunately meant removing and replanting

trees and shrubs, but also positively weed species along the eastern creek bank. Then the real heavy work was able to being with excavating and removing asbestos-containing soil on the eastern side of the creek to the natural ground level. New clean soil was brought in to replace what was removed. Council was also able to improve drainage within the catchment and construct a new rock wall along a section of the western bank to protect against future potential scouring and erosion. Getting these works completed in a timely manner was one thing. However, the great news is that although approximately 60 trees, shrubs and weed species were removed in order for works to begin, over 7,600 plants were planted to replace them that included native grasses, groundcovers, shrubs, plus over 150 trees on the eastern bank! These works are a great win for, not only today’s generations, but the ones to follow, along with everything that relies on a clean and healthy Kedron Brook. If you suspect asbestos is present in any Council parks or waterways please contact the Enoggera Ward office on 3407 2510
A Terrific History of the Tramway
‘The Brisbane Tramway Museum Society (BTMS) invites any person who is interested in the preservation of Brisbane’s historic trams to attend the first public meeting of the Society. The meeting will be held at the Druids Hall in Little Roma Street on the evening of 5th July 1968 at 7.30 pm.’
Made in a circular that was distributed by the society, this appeal and struck a chord with the public. The meeting was well attended by people from all walks of life and some of these people have continued their association with the society to the present day! The meeting enthusiastically supported the establishment of a tramway museum. Buoyed by this show of support, the newly formed society set about securing a suitable site for the museum. Funds were raised to finance the project and negotiations were entered into with the Brisbane City Council for the acquisition of a representative collection of Brisbane’s trams. The negotiations with the Council were speedily concluded with 20 trams, two trolley buses and a vast quantity of equipment being passed over to the society. Unfortunately efforts to secure a suitable site proved more difficult. As a temporary measure, the museum was housed in a disused tile factory adjacent to Ferny Grove Railway Station. It was not until March 1972 that the present site became available. With a permanent home secured, work began in earnest, laying the foundations for the future. Car sheds were erected, the electricity supply was installed, and the track was put down. 1980 will be remembered as the year that the society ‘stood on its feet’ in the eyes of the public. On 10th August, 1980, the Governor Sir James Ramsay officially opened the Museum’s doors. Building on this success, the BTMS continued to make steady progress in the development of the museum complex. The 1990’s saw a period of consolidation at the museum. A new building was erected to display tramway related artefacts and to house archival records. This building also doubles as the museum’s shop where books and other souvenirs can be bought. In addition, workshop facilities were improved in this period and electric power distribution was upgraded throughout the museum. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by Brisbane City Council.

Chaos at Cloudland A monthly update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc.
The former glamorous dance hall at Cloudland
The 7th of November is the anniversary of the demolition of the iconic Cloudland dance hall and concert venue at Bowen Hills back in 1982.
To many locals in Brisbane’s north western suburbs and the Hills District, Cloudland would bring back many fond memories: school dances, concerts, receptions, debutant balls and similar. Many future husbands and wives would also have had their first meeting at a post-war dance at Cloudland of a Saturday night. Originally called Luna Park, Cloudland opened in August 1940 high on a hill via Montpelier Road. Its remarkable 18-metre high laminated roof arch made it a prominent feature, visible to thousands of Brisbane residents in surrounding suburbs. Inside, the venue was renowned for its decorative columns, sweeping curtains, domed sky lights and chandeliers. Over the years, Cloudland played host to several well-known
artists and bands, including Cold Chisel, The Police, The Bee Gees, Madness, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, The Saints and Midnight Oil. The demolition of Cloudland inspired the Oils to write their hit song ‘Dreamworld’. On 3rd February 1958, pioneering US rock’n’roll singer Buddy Holly played a concert at Cloudland. Eerily, exactly one year later – on 3 February 1959 – Buddy Holly would die in that tragic plane crash (aged just 22) near Clear Lake, Iowa along with Richie Valens and ‘the Big Bopper’. Although listed on the National Trust, Cloudland was demolished on the 7th November 1982, with no public notice, in the middle of the night by the Dean Brothers. It was a dubious decision under the then Bjelke Petersen state government which caused a massive outcry and protests. Unit development soon took place on the site at Bowen Hills. Who out there remembers Cloudland? Who has fond memories of a dance event, a concert viewed, or similar from years past? Feel free to share your stories with us. LNP DELIVERS MORE AND CHEAPER BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE TO WORKING FAMILIES An LNP Government will create 30,000 additional places in before and after school programs to lower costs for working families across Queensland. The LNP will invest $80 million in major upgrades to expand school facilities and increase available places and subsidise childcare training to address chronic worker shortages. The LNP’s funding boost will provide: • $60 million to expand and upgrade playground and school facilities to accommodate before and after school care, to increase the number of places available for working families. • $10 million to address chronic staffing shortages through subsidised training under a childcare worker training course for at least 10,000 more workers. • $10 million to establish a centralised unit in the Department of Education to coordinate before and after school care agreements.
LNP TO MAKE QUEENSLAND THE RECYCLING STATE An LNP Government will open a solar panel recycling facility in South-East Queensland and work with councils to build new roads from recycled plastic as part of a visionary plan to create new jobs and protect our environment. The LNP’s plan to make Queensland the Recycling State will: • Build green roads from recycled plastic More than 80% of road asphalt can be made from recycled products. The LNP’s $50m trial will increase green road construction and develop new guidelines for future roadbuilding projects. • Establish a solar panel recycling industry Without future action, more than 100,000 tonnes of solar panels are predicted to enter Australia’s waste stream by 2035. The LNP will initiate a reverse auction to establish a solar panel recycling facility in Queensland. • Ban batteries and e-waste from landfill Electronic waste contains valuable non-renewable resources like gold, copper, zinc, and aluminium, as well as hazardous materials. An LNP Government will expand recovery facilities and launch a public education to reduce e-waste going into landfill before legislating a ban on the practice by 2024. • Support recycling research and development The LNP will work with Queensland universities to establish centres of recycling excellence to encourage innovation in the industry. • Fast-track approvals for recycling infrastructure An LNP Government will fast-track planning approvals for new and better recycling infrastructure.
