Memories - The Enoggera Tram

A monthly update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc.

,

Click, Clack! Click, Clack! Pictured is the Enoggera tram on its final day – travelling to Chermside on Sunday 1st December, 1968.

While the very last tram journey took place in Brisbane the following year on 13th April, 1969 (over 50 years ago!), this would be the last service that took place in the Enoggera area. Who out there remembers when trams were an iconic feature of Brisbane’s transport network and way of life? Who still has some memorabilia from those days – such as photos, tickets, an old The Enoggera Tram on its last day running, going to timetable or something of the likes? Chermside. Photo taken 1st December 1968. Feel free to share your memories with us. Visit our Facebook page or email enoggerahistory@ gmail.com We’d love to hear from you! Remember: You can still re-live such memories from yesteryear by visiting the wonderful Brisbane Tramway Museum on Tramway Street, Ferny Grove – next door to the Grove Sports Club. The centre is open to the public every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. For enquiries phone, 3351 1776. And don’t forget: the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. has just re-opened its history display to the local community each Thursday morning from 9.30am. Just visit the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Wardell Street (parking in Trundle Street). Social distancing and COVID-19 rules apply, but you are most welcome to drop in for a look and a cuppa. Finally, thank you to the late T V Gall of Alderley for donating to the Society the accompanying photo of the last Enoggera tram. Take care, everyone Andrew McMicking, President

Experiencing Diversity at Mitchelton State High School Difference By Avano Otsuka

I was trapped in small, safe cage like a bird. I was isolated by a deep, dynamic ocean. There is a different world across the ocean. One that I had not previously experienced. Is it because Japan is an island? Or because our traditional beliefs hold us back? I do not know why I hold that kind of bias, but that‘s why I wanted to know different people in a different country. I escaped the cage.

Just a few of the international students having fun playing basketball.

There is always something exciting happening in the International School at Mitchelton State High School.

This term the school has welcomed three new students from China, Vietnam and Colombia. The students have commenced a busy term, participating in various activities including basketball club, netball club, soccer club, informative presentations from UQ and QUT and the celebrations of National Science Week. The Science Extension students had the opportunity to attend an excursion to Seaworld and the major highlight of the day was snorkelling. Ayano Otsuka has written an enlightening reflection on ‘difference’ as an assessment task for English Additional Language class. Ayanos’ writing delivers an insight into how the Australian culture can be perceived by an international student. Here is her story on the right.

Even now, in Tokyo, people who are different, because of skin colours or languages stand out for Japanese attention. It is like a circus and we are the audience. And we regard them as outsiders and start guessing where they came from like being in a zoo. They are aliens. Like lightening, the shock of day 1 at Mitchie shook me. A sea of different faces, different colours, and different accents engulfed me. But we are all learning together in this school. Such an incredible journey I was taking. My comfort zone had disappeared. This was exciting. This was scary. This was eye-opening. I went to the city - again another shock! We are all enjoying shopping together. I had already known the meaning of ‘diversity’ when I was in Japan, but I really got the true meaning of ‚diversity‘ in Australia. Australia accepted the differences. But Japan does not. So on the whole, Japanese culture doesn‘t embrace difference. Maybe they aren‘t aware of that. In Japan there is little discussed about racism and difficult cultural classes, because we are basically monoculture. I have learnt both good and bad things about difficulty. I have learned the negative meaning of the word “Jap”. What a shame! I am Japanese. I am proud of being Japanese, but I want to experience the world - it‘s good and it‘s not so good. Now, I am flying in the huge and high Australian sky. Difference is good. Trying to understand difference is good as well. But we cannot judge people with their differences. I will keep flying with the dream to help other poor birds be released from the cage. I will not re-enter the cage!

October news from Everton Park State High School

Student team crowned Brisbane North champions

It's Mural Mania in the Art Department!

Art students in front of the finished mural

Year 9 and 10 Art Students have been involved in an ‘artist in residence’ workshop, with local Sunshine Coast artist Sarah Sculley.

Just one of the teams from the Brisbane North Opti-minds Challenge

Over the first seven weeks of Term 3, two teams of keen and enthusiastic students from Everton Park State High School prepared for this year’s Brisbane North Opti-minds Challenge.

These students took part in the Year 7-9 Division of this annual competition. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, this year, teams had to prepare video submissions for assessment by a panel of judges at the University of Queensland on Sunday 30 August 2020. After the judging of all of the entries from around the state, Everton Park State High School were crowned the Brisbane North Champions for 2020 in the Year 7-9 Category! The team of Kaylee S, Ruby R, Charlotte F, Lauren F, Eden G & Tayley Hadley won the Year 7-9 Division for the Social Science Challenge! This is an amazing achievement and their facilitator, Mr Tait is over the moon for the students (as are we all). The other team, comprising of Connor L, Camden S, Iris H, David D, Stirling A & Finley M were runners up, finishing in 2nd place! Another outstanding effort. They are to be commended for their dedication and efforts over the last two months, and can all hold their heads up high. Mr Tait’s team’s video submission will now be entered into a state final (along with all regional winners) to be judged shortly. Fingers crossed they go well at the next level!

The project involved lessons held over a month where students learned the process of creating a major mural project with involvement in concept design and mural painting techniques. Sarah incorporated the students’ design concepts to develop the finished work which included colours students found within the plants and flowers in the school grounds, a stylised shape of the Brisbane river, which is a nod to the traditional owners of the land - Turrbal people - who lived on food from the river and waterways. Students created a wonderful design for a texture that was their interpretation of - the white round dots, which show the school community and the individuals, which represent the schools motto ‘Where every student is known’. Students used the star shape in the middle of the school emblem as a textural pattern - you can also see this in the dark blue. The finished works have brought the playground back to life and showcased our extremely talented art students for many years to come. Sarah Sculley is a Sunshine Coast-based urban artist. She studied a Bachelor of Design Studies, majoring in Graphic Design and Visual Culture at the Queensland College of Art and received a scholarship from Griffith University to study abroad at the Edinburgh College The finished mural in the of Art, Scotland. playground

Scouts for our youth

T. Southwood; with Grey Wolf Awardees Zara Ahluwalia; Matilda Corry and Elizabeth Howie, and Zoe Gallagher who is currently working towards her Award. Each have had to lead their own bushwalk.

So you’ve heard about Scouts, but aren’t really sure what’s it about? Well, this month, let’s look at two of our younger groups in a bit more detail:

Joey Scouts (aged 5-7) Thursday 6.00 - 7.00pm Life as a Joey Scout is full of discovery and excitement! Joeys are encouraged to express themselves creatively, through games, stories and craft activities. From building monsters and spaceships from scrap items to growing plants from seedlings, Joeys develop a strong sense of belonging and an understanding and awareness of the world around them. Cub Scouts (aged 8-11) Tuesday 6.30 - 8.00pm Cubs also focus on having fun and learning about the world around them. Through fun games and using their imagination, they learn life skills like first aid and safety, how to read a map and how to organise themselves for exploring the outdoors. Each Cub begins to learn leadership and teamwork in small teams (known as patrols). Cubs go on camps, bushwalks and bike trips. Parents can join in on the fun too by becoming a Cub Leader – all training is provided. Whilst Scouts actually cater for ages up to 25, our younger groups are probably some of the better known. It’s in these groups they really they have a pile of fun in a safe environment, making new friends and learning by doing. Sure - the older groups are outdoors a lot more, hiking and planning their own camps - but the junior groups are preparing for this and do it with so many more giggles! Congratulations Speaking of Cubs, three members of our group recently

achieved the top-level Cub Scout Award. Known as the Grey Wolf, these Awards are earned by those Cubs who have undertaken a number of activities and requirements including camps, leading a hike, and a range of other activities. Congratulations to Elizabeth Howie, Zara Alhuwalia and Matilda Corry. And best wishes also Zoe Gallagher who is almost finished hers. Everyone is very proud of your hard work and achievement. Researching the Convict in your Family!

By Susie der Kinderen from the Queensland Family History Society

Recently I walked past a local liquor shop and saw a promotion of a new wine label, 19 Crimes. The wine label has used the original gaol photographs of a number of convicts transported to Australia for their crimes. This put me in mind of my research for my convict ancestors. How I would have loved to see one of my bad boys or my bad girl on a wine label. If you have convicts in your family history there is so much digitally available for you to research them thoroughly, although not everything is on the internet. If they were convicted at The Old Bailey you can download the transcript of the court case listing the crime, the names of the police and witnesses and personal details. There are numerous websites that list the ship name, the departure and arrival dates and the names and number of convicts that were transported. The destination of the ships include NSW, Norfolk Is, Moreton and Tasmania. The NSW Colonial Secretary records often show who and where the convict was assigned to. There are records of a convicts Permission to marry and their TOL (tickets of leave). Queensland Family History Society has a print library that contains a number of resources that include the Log of Logs, Musters and Lists of NSW 1800-1802 and many published local histories that are very useful for researching your convict or early settler. Give us a call on 3355 3369 or come and visit at 58 Bellevue Avenue, Gaythorne. More information available on www.qfhs.org.au

We are very lucky in the Hills District to have so many incredible non-for-profit organisations supporting our community. This month, I was lucky enough to chat with two of them—Picabeen Community Association and Willmore Community Kindergarten & Preschool—to find out how they access grants and find some common themes that we could all learn from their success. 1. Develop strong community relationships – Picabeen Community Association works side by side with the community, local organisations, and other neighbourhood centres. Being able to connect with like-minded organisations has enabled them to establish long-lasting relationships and create funding partnerships that align with their mission to support our community. It is important to develop strong connections in the community in order to better understand local needs and to explain these to potential funders. Next time you drive past George Willmore Park along Ferny Way, keep an eye out for the beautiful mural created by the children at Willmore Kindergarten. Working closely with the Moreton Bay Regional Council—this project’s funders—the kindergarten’s 3-to-5 year-olds wanted to use their voice to save the bees. The mural ‘Bee Kind’ encourages the community to grow flowers for the bees to pollinate and support one another, but it is also there to simply put a smile on people’s faces.

2. Follow your strengths – Over the years, Willmore

Kindergarten has delivered several innovative initiatives with a strong focus on resilience, inclusion, and strengthening children’s voices in the community. These themes have played a pivotal role in their grant applications, contributing significantly toward securing funding for the organisation. As an example, they are currently on the lookout for funding for wall panels to dampen background noise. This will help support those with sensory needs and hearing sensitivities and will put Willmore at the forefront of inclusion in education.

3. Spend time engaging your volunteers – Volunteers who

are thoroughly engaged and provided with meaningful work contribute to an organisation’s success—and not to mention, will also enjoy the ride! Picabeen have an active volunteer program—available to both community members and students—that ensures each and every person feels welcome and is asked about what drives them to succeed. Similarly, Willmore has an active volunteer community made up of parents, including an active grants team! Volunteers are able to inject their own personality into their positions so they can really shine. I would love to hear from more organisations doing interesting things – if you want to chat about grants, tell me about programs you are running, or just want to say hello, please contact me at carolyn@lpmcompany.com.au

Serving up a good dose of community spirit

You may have remembered, we published a story this time last year regarding The Hills Community Breakfast Club - a free community breakfast at TaxArana in Arana Hills to help the most vulnerable within our community.

The Hills Community Breakfast Club was a collaboration between Arana Hills local Steve Brett, the Picabeen Community Centre and the Older Women’s Network (OWNQ), however this year the breakfast has transitioned to a lunch at the new location of the Picabeen Community Centre. The free lunch is designed to help support our most vulnerable community members, through not only providing a warm meal, but offering access to support and information. It is also an opportunity for socially struggling people within our community to engage and connect with others. Steve Brett, was inspired to start the club after hearing of the good work that is happening in the Redcliffe area where a community breakfast has been supporting up to 50 people each morning. ‘I was inspired by the people who run the Redcliffe Breakfast Club and I began to wonder if there was a need for a similar need for assistance for homeless and disadvantaged people in the local area,’ said Steve. While it is difficult to accurately pinpoint the number of people who are currently homeless in our region, Picabeen Community Centre has revealed that there has been a significant increase in the number of people who are presenting at their centre who have become homeless in recent months. Homelessness is not a choice and can be the result of many social and economic factors, such as domestic violence,

addictions, physical or mental health and loss of employment. The community lunch takes place at Picabeen Community Centre, 22 Hoben Street, Mitchelton every Tuesday from noon. If you have a business that would like to help out as a produce sponsor or if you Pam Kingsford-Smith and Ann would like to volunteer, Gadsby from the Older Women’s please contact 3354 2555 Network serving up a storm at The or email info@picabeen. A long Legacy of Bocce We had the pleasure of catching up with the Secretary of the Newmarket Bocce Club, Mario de Marco to learn a bit more about the sport and his involvement. Read our interview below:-

How long have you been playing bocce? Well, I remember playing as a teenager. My father built a bocce court at home, which doubled up as a driveway for my XW Ford Falcon Sedan. He had boards along the side so we could play off the board in a difficult shot. There were boards placed at either end, my father had screwed on rubber car tyres. The main reason was for it to act as a noise buffer, but when you played a ball, you could actually bounce the ball from the back and it would travel forward and sometimes take the shot. Back in those days, it was no-rules-bocce. This was before the National Bocce Federation was incorporated. I then got interested in ten pin bowling and did that for 17 years. I was quite good at it, earning myself a cabinet full of trophies and patches to show. I was introduced to bocce at the Australian Italian Club at Carseldine by my brother-in-law. You would remember it as the Tavernetta. Beppi Sari was in charge of bocce and I remember Marco Stefanuto, who at the time was a Queensland junior champion. That was in the mid 1990’s! As you know, the land was sold, the beautiful bocce courts were torn down, and the rest is history. So, I moved over to the Italo Austalian Centre at Newmarket. I was a committee member when Gianni Cappelli was President. I was President in 2008 & 2009 and have been secretary for 10 years. We currently have a great committee who are dedicated to the club. What is it about bocce that you enjoy so much? It is a game of skill, being able to accurately bowl a ball to take the shot from your opponent. It’s a game of stamina especially when you play a competition and you are playing all day. It’s a relaxing game, not physical. Bocce is a lively game providing fun to people of all ages and you only need minimal equipment, a set of bocce balls , a club polo shirt, and off you go! Bocce is also a forum to meet people, make friends, and enjoy a drink during and after the game. We play Wednesday and Friday nights, Tuesday morning, and Sunday afternoon (by

The Newmarket Bocce players after a recent competition. Mario de Marco pictured kneeling at the front. arrangement), so it is a good mid-week break away from work and hustle and bustle of life. How many members in the club? We have about 60 members. About 26 members play bocce, some social and some competitive. The Special Olympic team trains on Thursday nights. These juniors are just fantastic. We have the Baby Boomers club where there are up to 20 participants. Some play bocce while others play cards. They have a great time. Anyone is welcomed to attend. The cost is $2 per person. They attend Wednesday mornings. Unlike New South Wales and Victoria where Bocce is BIG, here in Queensland it never took off. Unfortunately, in the early days, there was no program to get younger players to play or to train new players. Of course, when the Italian Club went into liquidation 2006/2007, nearly all the members left. We have two original members in the club. The club had some great players and have even boasted a fantastic women’s team. So, yes it is difficult to get junior players because of all the other interactive sports out there. But our club will not give up on junior players as all ages are welcomed to join. The Queensland Federation has developed a junior program. How many bocce clubs are there? There used to be about six bocce clubs in South East QLD, however they have all gone and we are the only surviving club left in Brisbane. The other is Redlands Bocce club in the Redlands • Your local resident City Council precinct. painting company We are determined to keep it going, but • Servicing Brisbane’s it is a very hard ask. The club is still operating the Thursday morning session from 9am to noon, as well as 1pm to 4pm on a Saturday. Recently, new members joined the club who came from Chile, Japan and Switzerland. They are amazed Thunder-Egg Agate from at the variety of cutting North QLD material that is so freely available in Australia. Several of the Swiss family members accompanied the Gem Club on their recent trip to Chinchilla in search of petrified wood. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club teaches all new members how to cut a cabochon and once they have mastered this they can make variations to the standard shape in the stones they cut. There are double cabochons, fancy cabochons, free form cabochons, and the shapes are varied. With the use of plastic and metal templates, these various shapes of cabochons are possible. The hardest part of fancy cabochons is shaping, grinding, and sanding inside curves. It takes a while for a new member to achieve these shapes without a mistake happening. By attaching a cabochon blank to a dop stick (various size of dowel) the control of shaping the stone is made easier. Cabochon blanks are generally attached to dop sticks by using sealing wax. To remove the stone when completed it is a matter of placing the stone and dop stick in the freezer section of a fridge for about fifteen minutes. More details about the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club can be found on their website at www.mitcheltondistrictsgemclub. wordpress.com or Facebook Page: Mitchelton and District Gem Club Inc. If you would like to have a chat to someone regarding the hobby, please do not hesitate to contact John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093. www.echo-news.com.au

The club meets on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 9am until noon. On Mondays there is a concert (entry fee is $8) and this includes morning tea and entertainment by different musical groups each week, plus the occasional game of Bingo. A light lunch is included in the entry fee too. The club is very social and celebrates events such as Easter, Anzac Day, Melbourne Cup Day and Christmas. BOWLERS WANTED! The club is always looking for new bowlers. The bowls are played on Tuesday and Fridays from 9am until noon. The $3 entry fee includes morning tea, so head along and give them a go. You will certainly be made welcome by their friendly club bowlers. If you do join The Mitchelton Seniors club, the annual joining fee is $7. The club address is 30 Tel-El-Kebir Street, Mitchelton (opposite the Gaythorne RSL) For more information, please call 3351 0358 or 3351 0240

The magnificent mission of the Men’s Shed

News from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed

The carpentry workshop which is home to up-todate machines and with the people who know how to use thems

Men’s Sheds were first introduced into Australia in the early part of this century. They were primarily designed to provide a means for men to get together and discuss common issues, particularly relating to health, social isolation and the like. Many sheds have been established in a short space of time. In 2007, the Australian Men’s Shed Association was inaugurated, based in Newcastle NSW. Today, that association boasts over 1,000 sheds, including our shed. In some cases, the sheds that started out simply as meeting venues, where members could gather to talk, listen to a guest speaker, play cards, etc, took an extra step and workshop activities were added to their overall range of activities. Workshops provided the means for men to practice their craft skills (often not possible to do in their homes due to the machinery needed or for other reasons) and to pass on those skills to other members. Woodcraft was a major activity in this area. Normally, membership of a shed consists of men from the local area. However, because of the unique opportunities offered by the Ferny Grove Shed - for example, the association with trams - the membership is drawn from all over Brisbane and even from the Gold Coast. Members of our shed play a major role in the restoration and maintenance of the fleet of Brisbane Trams operated by the Tramway Museum, at both a technical level and a more general level. Members include electrical specialists, mechanics, carpenters and other members who clean the trams, paint them or even polish the brassware! Overall, they keep the operating fleet operating! In addition to looking after trams, shed members are also responsible for maintaining the buildings and grounds. Furthermore, part of the philosophy of men’s sheds is that they perform some work for the community at large. In our case, we have just completed some ‘fringes’ for the local cricket club grandstand. Also, we are currently undertaking a project of re-painting signs for the Scouts camping grounds at Samford and helping out the Tramway Museum with volunteers when required. There is always room for more members and any men seeking to expand their hobbies or craft skills are welcome to come and have a look. The shed is located next to the Ferny Grove Bowls Club on Tramway Street, Ferny Grove. It is open every Tuesday from 7am until 2pm and on Friday mornings from 7am until about noon. Call 3351 1776 or visit the website www.brisbanetramwaymuseum.org for more information.

Do you know about sustainable gardening?

The Nest Community Volunteers; Rachel, Leslie and Sarah making terrariums for sale in the shop Chicken cuddles, wild bees and making Japanese kokedama – The Nest Community’s gardening group is bringing the outdoors to life and they are currently recruiting green-thumb volunteers.

Since 2014, The Nest Community in Everton Park has fulfilled its purpose of providing a safe and supportive environment for women of all ages to connect through craft. Situated in a beautiful Queenslander home that feels like Grandma’s house, they The Nest Garden had the opportunity to establish a volunteer-run neighborhood community garden to improve their surrounds, thanks to a grant from The Mercy Foundation in 2017. Three years later, The Nest has a dedicated gardening group that has established a worm farm and small veggie plots at the rear of the house, and they regularly produce cuttings or terrariums for sale. At the front of the house, they have partnered with Brisbane City Council to run a compost hub where neighbours can turn their kitchen scraps into nutrientrich compost for the garden. Unlike a community garden where individuals are given their own plot, The Nest garden is worked on by everyone and they are looking for volunteers who love the outdoors, want to learn new skills or share knowledge and can work in a group underpinned by intergenerational relationships and mentoring. Want to get involved? • You don’t have to commit to a regular day – once a week or even once a month • Join a working bee – next one is the 17th October • Can’t volunteer? Plant donations are welcome! • Drop-in and chat to the ladies in the Haberdashery shop or go to the website to register athttps://www.nestcommunity. org.au/get-involved/ Page 16 - October 2020, The Everton Echo

Feature Welcome to The Everton Echo’s spring health and wellbeing guide, The Health Hub. This edition is jam-packed with health and wellbeing news and information from north west Brisbane.

What is a Good Night’s Sleep Worth to You?

Difficulty sleeping has to rank as one of the most common issues raised over the counter in pharmacy conversations. In fact, around 4 in 10 adults report frequently suffering from inadequate sleep. The health impacts of not getting enough sleep are not just limited to daytime sleepiness, with chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease linked to long term sleep deprivation. Inadequate sleep can have a myriad of causes, with many suffers spending a lot of time and money trying to get to the root cause of their sleeping issues. Our modern-day lifestyles have a lot to answer for, with changing routines, exposure to artificial light and less time for relaxation, all contributing to the likelihood of difficulty getting to and staying asleep. Other causes of sleep disturbance can be more difficult to identify and often leave people feeling tired and lacking energy for significant periods of time before an answer

is found. This is often true with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). People with OSA have periods of time in the night where adequate air cannot get down the airways into the lungs due to the upper airway partially or fully collapsing. Often, people with OSA will snore and this is a big clue that OSA may be present, but it can occur also in people that do not snore. The only way to know for sure if you have sleep apnoea is to complete a sleep study, which can now be done in the comfort of your own home! A short screening questionnaire can be completed with the help of your pharmacist at The Clinic Hub, to see if a sleep study may be required. For the Month of October, you can perform a home sleep study through The Clinic Hub for just $49. At Exquisite, all levels of fitness are catered for, plus there is a huge variety of classes on offer from Bootcamps to Strength, Yoga, Pilates, Barre, and so much more! Gym owner Nerida Smith has been a personal trainer in the area for over seven years and has always been driven by a passion for bringing health, fitness, energy and vitality back into people’s lives. ‘I am a huge believer in mixing up how people train and combining both resistance/weight training with short, sharp bursts of cardio activity for both re-sculpting and defining the body. This type of training not only keeps you interested, it also keeps the body guessing. This way it doesn’t fall into a comfortable state where it becomes less effective at burning calories and keeping the metabolism fired,’explains Nerida. In addition, the studio also boasts caring and friendly personal trainers who take a direct interest in you, your body, your goals, your circumstances and any obstacles that may get in the way of you reaching your goals. At Exquisite Fitness, you will be welcomed by a super supportive community of men and women who will support and cheer you on in order for you to achieve your own fitness goals. Feel the Booty Burn with Barre With a name like ‘Booty Burn’, you know you‘re heading into a class with a bit of sass and clearly a lot of burn in the backside to boot. However, all puns aside, this new workout program, now offered at local fitness studio Exquisite Fitness, is rapidly gaining recognition and followers in the local area, and it is not hard to see why. The foundations of ‘Booty Burn’ are derived from ‘Barre’ - a class that originates from the ballet discipline, however no dancing experience is required! The class is a combination of dance, pilates and yoga all merged into one. The Barre method uses your own body weight for resistance and focuses on small, deliberate movements that focus on certain groups of muscles - specifically muscles that aren’t used in other workouts. Therefore, you're in for a fitness session that will work muscles you never thought you had! Classes are all very low-impact, making it perfect for all body types, for people recovering from injuries, and even for pregnant ladies. Whats more, if done regularly, Barre fitness classes can work to deliver athlete-like strength, but with the long, lean, sculpted body of a dancer. Exquisite Fitness recently completed construction of ‘The Bliss Barre’ - a custom-built barre studio complete with air-conditioning where their popular ‘Booty Burn’ classes are held. For class times or more information, visit exquisitefitness. com.au or call Nerida on 0403 000 585

Signs your elderly relative is no longer safe living alone

Sudden changes in behaviour may be a sign that your elderly relative is no longer safe living alone. Little signs may indicate your elderly relative needs more support to remain independent and healthy at home. 1. Weight loss Weight loss is common as we age, but sudden changes in weight can be a sign that your elderly relative is not eating well, and can signal the early stages of a cognitive illness. Your relative may have forgotten to eat regularly, or not remembered to get to the shops. Check that the pantry and fridge are well-stocked and ensure meals are a suitable portion size and contain enough nutritional value. It may be time to arrange home delivered meals or have a carer help prepare the meals at home. 2. Personal hygiene Showering and wearing fresh clothing each day shows your relative has a healthy functioning brain and a positive outlook. If clothing is being worn for days on end and showering is becoming less frequent, it could be a sign that your relative is not functioning as well as they could. For someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s, remembering all the steps involved with taking a shower may be difficult. Going to the toilet may also be a challenge if the brain’s normal signals are not finely tuned. 3. Vision and Hearing Loss Does your relative turn up the volume on the TV to a deafening level? Have they stopped attending their book

Page 22- October 2020, The Everton Echo

club? Perhaps you’ve noticed they seem more apprehensive about driving? While some hearing and vision loss is considered a normal part of ageing, the individual may not be aware that these senses are diminishing. If your parent is struggling to hear normal conversational volume or no longer reads words on a page like they used to, they should have their eyes and hearing tested. 4. Reduced social activity and low mood Depression and anxiety are serious health issues for older people. Symptoms of depression can include loss of appetite, reduced social engagements, poor sleep, fatigue, low energy, increased levels of pain and irritability. The loss of a spouse or friend can trigger a depressed mood, or it could be a symptom of a cognitive decline as the person struggles with confusion and frustration on a daily basis. With a disease like dementia, angry outbursts may be common. Someone with dementia often becomes extremely defensive or suspicious of those around them — including close family and friends — as they can’t distinguish familiar faces from a stranger. Consult a GP about the various treatment options. 5. Changes in home cleanliness A cluttered house isn’t necessarily a bad sign. However, if your parent was always very tidy and liked order, piles of unopened mail, increased clutter, an unusual amount of dirty dishes and general mess is a possible sign of an underlying cognitive or emotional issue. Additionally, watch out for items showing up in strange places around the home, like food or drinks placed in the dishwasher instead of the refrigerator. If mail is unopened, bills may not be paid on time, or important appointments maybe missed. 6. No concept of time Many people with dementia are no longer able to distinguish night from day and lose track of days. For example, they may call in the middle of the night confused why you haven’t picked them up for their 10am appointment in 3 days’ time. Sleep patterns are disrupted, so poor sleep may be another sign of cognitive decline. Your parent’s GP can discuss these symptoms and offer advice. If you’ve noticed some of these signs with your parents or elderly relative, it may signal that they need some further assistance to remain independent, safe and healthy at home.

Stay Safe in the Sun Brisbane is known as the Skin Cancer Capital of the world. With more than 1300 Australians dying each year from skin cancer, one in two Australians will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Education, prevention and early detection are the keys to reducing your risks of skin cancer. The biggest cause of skin cancer is too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation, usually from sunlight. Even mild sunburn can cause lasting damage to normal skin. You can be exposed to dangerous levels of UV even in winter. The risk of skin cancer increases as we get older. People with fair skin, which burns easily, or those with natural red or blond hair are potentially at greater risk of skin cancer. So too are those with many moles, a family history of skin cancer, or a weakened immune system. Every change in a mole is potentially an alarm signal. If you notice any of the following changes, we recommend you book in for a skin check with a Skin Cancer doctor: change in colour; irregular edges; a change in the surrounding skin such as reddening, itching or an odd sensation, scaling, roughness or bleeding; a sore that doesn’t heal; a mole that bleeds or new moles especially when occurring after 25 years of age. Stay SunSmart. Lowering your risk of skin cancer can be as simple as avoiding long exposure to intense sunlight and practicing sun safety. And get your skin checked for summer!

Working from home - a pain in the neck?

Neck pain is an extremely common complaint among desk workers and at Keperra Physiotherapy Clinic they have seen a large increase in neck pain and headaches with the move to working from home during COVID. Much of this is neck pain is associated with workstation set-up and a change in daily routine with zoom meetings meaning workers are moving around a lot less. Sustained static postures can overload the joints, discs and associated muscles in the neck and upper back. Poor posture increases the likelihood of pain. Headaches commonly occur as pain from the upper neck refers into the base of the skull, forehead and temple areas. As many of us will continue to work from home for at least part of the working week it’s important to consider what you can do to minimize the chances of postural neck pain and headaches. Here are a few tips below:-. • Use a good quality office chair with adequate lumbar (low back) support. • Ensure your workstation and monitor are at the correct height. When sitting upright your eyes should meet the monitor screen somewhere in its top one third. Your monitor should be approximately an arm’s length from you when sitting upright. • With your elbows by your side, your keyboard and mouse should be within easy reach. • Check you posture regularly and correct if necessary. A computer reminder can be useful. • Take regular breaks from your workstation. Try to factor in some walks or tasks which take you away from your desk on a regular basis. • Avoid using laptops for extended periods unless they are positioned appropriately using an ergonomic stand. • Monitor your posture when using your tablet and smart phone. • Monitor stress levels. Many of us hold tension in our neck and upper back muscles, contributing to pain in this area If you do develop neck pain or headaches the physiotherapists at Keperra Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic can provide

effective relief with treatment of joint mobilisations to reduce joint stiffness, massage, dry needling, stretches and muscle releases to relieve muscular tightness. The team can also provide advice about work and lifestyle factors contributing to your pain, advice about your workstation set-up and an exercise routine to help ensure that your neck pain and headaches do not reoccur. Enoggera Ward News

Cr Andrew Wines, Brisbane City Councillor for Enoggera

COUNCIL’S EFFORTS TO REBUILD OUR ECONOMY Brisbane City Council is taking action to help rebuild Brisbane’s economy with initiatives under our Economic Recovery Taskforce, of which I serve as Deputy Chair. The work of the Taskforce is to build on the efforts already given to businesses and households from Council to stimulate further economic activity as we recover from this global pandemic. What’s been done already? Council initiated a $7.9 million business relief package consisting of waived charges, rents, levies and permit fees for all businesses for three months, as they faced the initial economic hardship caused by coronavirus. The fee moratorium included footpath and outdoor dining, food safety permits, advertising, temporary food stall and commercial lease rents for community organisations. Community based sporting groups benefited from a $5000 grant towards the cost of watering fields helping to take pressure off significantly strained budgets across every suburb. The Lord Mayor also announced a $3 million direct financial assistance grant program targeted at community, cultural and sports groups leasing Council-owned facilities to help rebuild and recommence services in Brisbane. There are a number of successful community organisations in the Enoggera Ward ready to be announced soon. Additionally $21.7 million is allocated in this budget across every Ward for projects that will boost local economic activity, and I am currently reviewing local projects for action here in Enoggera. Council provided assistance to ratepayers suffering financial hardship through unemployment via a one-off $250 JobSeeker Rebate. To be eligible for this rebate a resident needed to own

and live in a property within Brisbane City Council’s boundary and provide proof of a Commonwealth Government JobSeeker Payment. Future plans? To stimulate the economy through the building and construction industry, Council introduced a number of planning and building economic recovery initiatives. From 1st October, 2020 a new lodgement fee means that all minor developments and small scale building work will be free until 31st December, 2020. The response has been strong from the sector as Council tries to ensure there is a steady number of projects to keep tradies in work across the entire city. The tender for the design and construction of the depot site for the fully electric Brisbane Metro has been released with four construction companies now bidding for the contract. The depot construction alone will create an additional 165 jobs as part of the overall 2600 jobs across the entire project.

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

The latest concept art for the Ferny Grove TOD Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development The Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at the Ferny Grove Railway Station is due to start construction shortly (pending Brisbane City Council approval). The TOD is an exciting new development which will utilise the existing Ferny Grove Railway Station site to build extra parking spaces and extra residential options, as well as, cinemas, retail, dining spaces and a new day-care centre. Most significantly, the TOD will inject around $120 million into our local economy and will boost local employment by

more than 1,400 full time jobs. Over 700 of those jobs will be during the build with over 700 extra ongoing jobs in the precinct once the build is complete. The TOD is a unique investment in our local economy with private enterprise contributing $100 million and the Federal Government and the State Government working together to fund 400 extra car spaces for commuters. This increase in parking will ease the parking pressure on all stations on the Ferny Grove Line – from Grovely to Windsor. Reduction of train horn noise Following community feedback, Queensland Rail has implemented changes to reduce horn use at Grovely, Mitchelton, Newmarket and Alderley stations on the Ferny Grove Line. These changes will not eliminate the use of the horns entirely, but it will reduce the horn frequency while not compromising safety. Mobile offices Drop in and have a chat about the things which matter most to you. • 10th October: 10:30am Macchiato Me, 73 Wardell Street, Ashgrove • 11th October: 7am Ferny Grove Markets • 18th October: 10am Dorrington Park Ferny Grove pre-poll booth The Electoral Commission of Queensland has advised me electors may cast their ballots at the pre-poll poll booth located at 8 Dallas Pde, Keperra QLD 4054. Prepoll will open on 19 October and will operate from 9am to 6pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 9am to 9pm Tuesday and Thursday; and 9am to 5pm on Saturday 24th October. Mitchie Special School upgrades I am pleased to announce the Palaszczuk Government has provided $10.4 million to construct twelve new learning spaces and two new specialist spaces at Mitchie Special School. These new classrooms will meet the needs of the growing student population at Mitchie!

Everton News

from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER

With a State Election upon us, it’s important that, as a member of the Opposition, that I make you aware of the plans of the alternate LNP government. I believe that this election is about who has the best plan to drag us out of the economic recession we are currently experiencing. The Covid-19 virus has had a significant negative impact on our economy. However, Queensland’s economy was on its knees prior to the pandemic. Under the Labor Government over the past five years, we have had the highest unemployment in the nation, lowest level of business confidence, highest number of bankruptcies and highest debt. If Labor couldn’t manage the economy before the virus struck, what chance have they got now to stimulate the economy? A strong economy means more jobs. As the Deputy Leader of the LNP, I am proud to be part of a team that has a bold plan for the next decade not just the next few years (go to www.deb2020.com.au for the LNP’s plan).

LNP’s Crime Crackdown

LNP’s Youth Crime Plan

If the LNP wins the next state election on October 31, Youth Crime will be tackled by tough new laws and an overhaul to the justice system. As part of the LNP’s comprehensive youth crime plan: • Youth offenders on bail will be monitored 24/7 • Mandatory detention for third convictions • Community Payback Farm program will be established to rehabilitate repeat offenders • “Breaching Bail” by youth offenders will become an offence so there are consequences to offending • Justice reinvestment will be trialled to increase early intervention

LNP will deliver 170 more police for Brisbane

I’m horrified that an 18-year-old woman in my electorate experienced an attempted carjacking at Eatons Hill after she left work. The LNP will recruit an extra 170 police for Brisbane and establish new taskforces to crackdown on gang violence and car-jackings. Car crime, including carjacking, has surged under the State Labor Government. Everyone in the community has a right to feel safe in their home and on the streets. The LNP will ensure our police have the resources and the tough laws they need to do their job and keep Queenslanders safe. These new taskforces would be established immediately after the October 31 election.

Contact Tim Under the Labor Government crime has exploded in North Brisbane over the last 5 years: • Robbery increased by 80% • Break-ins up by 41% • Car theft increased by 84% • Shop stealing up by 58%

As your local state member, I'm here to represent you and am always available to listen and hear about the issues that matter. If you would like to contact me, please phone my office on 3535 1100 or email everton@parliament.qld.gov.au.
