Monster Event in Blackwood Street
Ghosts, ghouls, witches and definitely some Harry Potter inspired dress ups!! These are just some of the sights you will find down at the 2021 Blackwood Street Halloween Festival on Sunday 31 October in Mitchelton.
The community festival is one of the most popular - and definitely the spookiest - events to take place on the northside of Brisbane with over 5000 children and adults expected to participate this year. Unfortunately last years event had to be cancelled due to COVID 19 restrictions, so this year it is something the community is very much looking forward to. The Rotary Club of Mitchelton will again coordinate the event in conjunction with the Brisbane City Council, who is the major sponsor and the theme is ‘Harry Potter’! Blackwood Street, between Samford Road and Grovely Terrace, will close to car traffic between 3pm and 6pm on Sunday 31 October and the street will be transformed into a veritable playground of free entertainment. There will be something for all the family including The Flintstones from the 2018 c h i l d r e n ’ s g a m e s , entertainers, live music, Halloween festival.
market stalls, face painting, jumping castle and a sensational Doughnut Eating Competition, plus so much more!!. It promises to be hugely popular with the kids! There will also be awards for the Scariest and Best Costume so get your thinking cap on to what costume you might adorn. So venture if you dare, and ‘Trick-or-Treat’ your way through the local businesses and market stalls. For more information visit the Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/blackwoodst/events
The Mitchelton Rotarians look forward to feeding the crowds again at their Sausage Sizzle.

The Mini Farm Project (MFP), a community initiative established to eliminate food insecurity, makes use of special purpose urban and peri-urban farms. Each farm is specially designed to produce food for those in need, with the help of local charities and food relief agencies. It is the MFP’s belief that our community’s Liam Dolan, MFP Farmer vulnerable members deserve with CEO & Founder of the MFP Nick Steiner access to nutritious food—always. By converting underutilised spaces into urban farms to grow good quality food, this registered charity is saving livelihoods all round—and turning the heads of generous locals willing to offer more helping hands. Moreover, you can find the MFP locally at Samford with the organisation leasing half an acre from Millen Farm. In addition, they have partnered with Meals on Wheels Pine Rivers & Districts and grows fresh nutritious produce at no cost to Meals on Wheels. This allows them to divert funds that they would have spent on produce to other vital services. Liam (pictured on the left) is the Samford sites farmer and he works hard on the farm to supply a weekly delivery to Meals on Wheels. MFP also grows and delivers free produce to our neighbourhoods, and has harnessed the power of Patreon— their fresh website—to set up a fundraising initiative where people can sign up to support them. Monthly pledges start as low as $3.70 (the price of a coffee!). Alternatively, there is the option of making a custom pledge. The links to this great initiative are https://www.patreon.com/minifarmproject and https://www.mfp.org.au/. To order online, clients can go to our website and click ‘Shop Now’, or go direct to www. minifarmbox.com.au. As well as their fundraising initiative on Patreon, MFP has partnered with schools and universities to ensure these farms have a flow on community development effect outside of the supported charities. They are currently seeking philanthropic donors to get involved with bringing two new farms to fruition—one in Logan, the other in the Caboolture/Dakabin area. As a registered charity, all of MFP’s donations are, of course, tax deductible. MFP hopes to see some of your friendly faces jump on board soon!

An Alderley Op Shop with a BIG Heart
The Veteran’s Op Shop at 29 Samford Road, Alderley opened in December 2020 and has successfully navigated through this pandemic to remain open and provide a valuable service not only to the veteran community, but also to the community at large.
Proceeds from the Veteran’s Op Shop are directed to help Wounded Heroes provide vital financial and housing support to veterans and their families in crisis. The Op Shop has been a huge success since its inception with shoppers coming from far and wide to snag a bargain! Their shop motto is ‘We have a treasure for all - your job is simply to find it!’ Volunteers at the shop have been wonderfully surprised by the generosity shown by the community with a constant flow of donations streaming through the doors. Volunteers could not be more delighted to find these donations new homes, as Peter Thatcher, President of the Wounded Heroes Op Shop explains. ‘Nothing brightens your day more than to see the smile on a child’s face as they leave our shop with a beautiful Barbie Doll that our wonderful volunteer Margaret has so lovingly restored. You must come to shop to find out how she restores that beautiful Barbie Hair,’ said Peter. The Wounded Heroes Op Shop also goes above and beyond, providing immediate clothing packages for those in crisis – no forms to fill out, just a unique understanding from their staff who have seen the hard times and know what it is like to go without – just ask and they can help. Please drop by to snap up a bargain and say hello to Peter and Jocelyn and all their wonderful team of volunteers who

The Wolves Women Show Their Bark
Celebrations are in full swing at the Everton Wolves Junior Australian Football League (JAFL) club with their U15.5 Girls Division 3 winning the AFLQ juniors Grand Final last month.
The Grand Final took place on the first weekend in September at the AFLQ Headquarters, Cansdale Street, Yeronga. Despite stiff opposition, the ladies triumphed! Last year, due to low numbers, the team was merged with the Ipswich Eagles and they only won 2.5 games. However, this year, with some good recruiting from the players, the club was able to form their own team with nine brand new players to AFL from the squad of 21. They were part of this year’s 30% growth at the Everton Wolves JAFC. Some of the girls have been playing since 2015 and were part of the first Girls team at Everton in 2016. Seven of the girls are from the first female team to make finals in 2019. Charles Tibbitts, President of the Everton Wolves AFL could not be prouder of the clubs all -female team who have worked incredibly hard all year to develop their skills. ‘These girls have shown an amazing camaraderie to become a great group that plays as a team,’ said Charles. ‘The skills have increased week by week and nothing stopped them from training and playing as a group. They are an inspiration to all girls, that anyone can play AFL and all are welcome down at The Den.’ The club trains at the 93 Mott Street, Gaythorne. Players are welcome from ages 8years old to 17 years old. For more information, visit www.evertonwolves.com.au or contact 0401 647 511

Get ‘Bowled Over’ for Free!
Do you want to try a slower placed outdoor activity - FOR FREE?!
Every Tuesday evening in October, from 6pm to 8pm, there will be FREE ‘Have-A-Go’ Lawn Bowl sessions at Gaythorne Bowls Club, Prospect Road, Gaythorne. The sessions are primarily aimed at people aged 50 and over, as this activity is included in the Brisbane City Council’s Active and Healthy Program. Booklets listing all activities in this program are available from all Brisbane City Council (BCC) Libraries, and can also be viewed on the BCC’s website. Additionally, anyone outside this age group is also welcome to come along and try their hand at this sport. Yes, it is a sport, not fast paced like running or with heavy physical contact like football, but the same degree of skill levels are required in order to achieve high results. The majority of people seen on a bowls green will most likely always be in the older age bracket, but the majority of people seen competing in bowls competitions are in the younger age bracket. So, all age groups are covered for people playing bowls. Bowls of old were always black and boring to look at with only a small differing picture on the side. However, now, bowls can be coloured as brightly as you like in swirls and other splashes of colours as complicated as the manufacturers can develop. At the Gaythorne Bowls Club’s Have-A-Go sessions, you will be using the boring black bowls, but they are mostly of lighter weights for easier use and introduction to the game of bowls. If you come and like bowls and decide to get more involved with the game, then the colourful world of bowls will be at your fingertips. See you every Tuesday evening at 6pm in October at Gaythorne Bowls Club. All you need to do is to wear enclosed flat soled shoes, as the greenkeeper likes to be the only person aerating the greens! Precision Bowls!
Sports
An update from the Newmarket Bocce Club by Mario De Marco ,
In the June edition I spoke about our inaugural game of ‘Precision Bowls’ and how it was a success. So we decided to have another competition on the 8th September. The game is a succession of three large rings and a small ring where the Kitty/Jack is placed. Now that outer circle (in the picture below) is about 2 metres wide, plenty of room to bowl a ball in. Well think again; you can play singles, doubles and even triples. Each player has four bocce balls and bowls into the circles. The point system is 1 point, 3 points and 5 points from the outer circle. If you move the jack and your bocce ball remains in that small circle its 10 points. It is very difficult to achieve. A player plays all 4 bocce balls and it is possible to hit one of your balls which can add or lower your point score, depending where it travels. So, on each bocce rink/court you play two ends. Your team score is added and recorded. As we have 4 bocce rinks/courts we play 8 ends in total. However, as we had more interest this time we had to play with 2 balls each, but the result was still there? Fun, fun and more fun, and a little bit of prize gift cards. The winning team, of course, is the team that has the most points. Remember, if you want a go at bocce or just want to come hav,e a look, give me a call on 0403257325. Arana Finishes Season with a BANG!
Arana 3 rejoicing after their Grand Final win
Arana Netball have finished off the 2021 season in terrific form, with three of their ten competitive teams winning their Grand Finals.
Arana 1, one of their opens teams, fought hard for a spot in the Grand Final and took home a challenging win. In addition, despite having three players out due to illness or injury, Arana 3 (one of their inter teams), took home a convincing Grand Final win. The team called in the help from three fresh faces from the cadets to make numbers up, and the girls gelled together beautifully. Finally, Arana 8 (the under 12’s team), had their chance for Grand Final victory. After being moved up a division, it was destined to be an exciting game. The girls were down significantly at half time, however, they rose to the challenge and came home with a Grand Final win.

A New Era of Freshness at Charlie’s
Since it planted its roots in Everton Park over 20 years at 4am at the Rocklea Markets, ago, Charlie’s Fruit Market has blossomed into an hand picking the store’s produce for the day. Quality and freshness iconic staple in our landscape. However, if you have driven by 473 South Pine Road in recent months, you may notice that the store has had somewhat of a transformation thanks to its new owner - aptly named Charlie! After being in business since the age of 15, Charlie had a vision to transform, not just Charlie’s, but the complex as a whole, into a modern-day health hub. Instead, to maintain its barn-like charm, Charlie has rebuilt the store into a character marketplace that retains the friendly country-style atmosphere welcomed in today’s society. ‘Charlie’s has always had an authentic feel, and I really wanted to keep that character in store,’ said Charlie. ‘I am delighted with the outcome of the refurbishments. We pride ourselves in offering something the supermarkets do not - good old-fashioned service with a smile. Exercise regularly and choose activities that you enjoy, such as walking, jogging, yoga or an indoor workout. There are also many free exercise and yoga videos on YouTube. 2. Eat Healthy Nutritious Food Eating healthy food is important for our mental and physical health – after all, “you are what you eat”. Eat lots of different fruits, vegetables and other high-fibre foods. Limit snacks and drinks which are high in sugar, unhealthy fats and salt. 3. Stay Connected Social connection is crucial for our mental health. Stay in touch with family and friends over the phone or online. Share your feelings with loved ones and trusted people from your community and invite them to share with you. 4. Take a Break From the News and Social Media It’s good to stay informed but choose trusted sources of information. Social media can help you stay connected,
Page 16 - October 2021, The Everton Echo
but too much can make us feel stressed, passive and overwhelmed. 5. Stick To a Routine Have a regular bedtime and mealtimes. Plan your day so you have time for household chores, connecting with others, activities you enjoy, and rest. 6. Monitor Your Mental Health and Wellbeing It’s important to monitor your own mental health and wellbeing. It’s also good to be aware of family, friends and neighbours who may be worried or stressed. Things to look out for include difficulty concentrating, poor sleep, and feeling distressed or overwhelmed. These are signs that it’s time to reach out. 7. Seek Support Don’t be afraid to talk to someone if you feel stressed or anxious. Talk to friends and family about how you’re feeling and if you’re feeling overwhelmed, you can talk to a trained counsellor any time, by calling the Coronavirus Mental Wellbeing Line on 1800 512 348. And importantly, if what you’re going through is making it hard to get on with your daily life, contact your GP. Submitted by Susanne Jones, Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD

Rehabilitation For Your Best Life
The rehabilitation unit and allied health team at North West Private Hospital in Everton Park continues to grow in response to community needs, since opening with its purpose-built, light-filled gym and consulting rooms on the hospital’s ground level in June last year. Allied Health Manager Graeme Walker said while the team works with a wide variety of patients, the Day Patient Rehabilitation Programs are particularly popular – including arthritis exercise, chronic pain program, and the newest: a cancer care program. “The service has grown beyond our expectations in the first year. “We see patients for surgical reasons or medical reasons to help them recover – and we can provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy, exercise physiology, also psychology, speech therapy and dietetics,” he said. The Day Programs generally run twice a week, for two to three hours at a time, over a six week period –available to eligible privately insured and veteran patients from hospitals and directly from the community. The Arthritis Day Rehab program provides exercise specifically tailored to help those struggling with the aches and pains of arthritis. Graeme said as well as providing potential to reduce joint pain, exercise also has potential to improve joint mobility and aid better mental health. “Many Australians aren’t aware that there are simple proactive ways to address arthritis, long before it reaches the point of being a debilitating condition, and ideally
preventing that entirely.” Graeme said the Pain Day Rehab program also offers small group education sessions on topics including explaining pain, pain and exercise, managing pain and pharmacy / medications and pain. The newest addition to the Day Rehab offerings is an education and exercise program supporting people who have experienced a decline in functioning and quality of life as a result of cancer treatment. Cancer treatment can affect the ability to perform everyday activities, and by combining education and exercise, our multidisciplinary team at North West Private Hospital works to help empower people to maintain an active and fulfilling life through the CancerCare ACTIVATE program. Participants can be at various stages of their journey, whether that be before, during or after any treatment. The program is designed to assist individuals to maximise participation in an active and fulfilling life, with a focus on functional and psychological wellbeing.
Referrals into the North West Private Day Patient Rehabilitation Programs can be made by GPs or medical specialists and one of the hospital’s three rehabilitation physicians will meet with the patient and assess their needs. Healthier Kids Menus Coming Soon to QLD
Queensland cafés and restaurants will be empowered to offer healthier menus for children, thanks to the state’s first Healthy Kids Menu initiative, launched by Health and Wellbeing Queensland. Launched in July, this new initiative will see Queensland venues participating in the program offer healthier menu options for children so it’s easier for families to make healthier food and drink choices when eating out. Childhood obesity is fast becoming a significant problem, with one in four Queensland children overweight or obese. Given the amount of food and drink consumed outside of the home, venues can be a positive force for helping to set kids up with healthy eating habits for life. Local food venues are invited to become part of this new initiative. Approved venues will be given access to promotional resources such as posters, flyers, certificates and social media content, to help get the word out to customers and provide greater exposure within your local community. This includes the Queensland Healthy Kids Menu tomato icon, which can be displayed beside the healthier items on your kids menu. Venues are encouraged to use the tomato icon to make it easier for families to choose healthier options. HWQld Healthy Eating Ambassador and chef Matt Golinski said even small actions could make a menu healthier. ‘Creating a healthier menu doesn’t have to be hard. Simple actions like switching cooking oils to canola oil or olive oil, reducing the salt in recipes, or using vegetables
as a key ingredient instead of a side, can have a huge impact on children’s health without affecting day to day business,’ said Matt. If your venue would like to become involved in the program, please email Sherridan Cluff sherridan.cluff@ hw.qld.gov.au or call 0488 251 782 More information, visit https://hw.qld.gov.au/healthykids-menu Keep your eyes peeled for the Healthy Kids Menu logo hitting local venues menus soon!

Medicinal Cannabis and More
From Keperra Compounding Pharmacy Since 2018, when the Federal Government relaxed restrictions around prescribing medicinal cannabis, thousands of Australians are now using it to treat conditions like chronic pain and mental health conditions. If conventional treatments are not satisfactory, a doctor may consider a trial of medicinal cannabis. In the past, it has been a long process to obtain a prescription. A common perception with medicinal cannabis is that it can be very difficult for patients to find doctors who are knowledgeable and interested. Furthermore, the products are quite expensive and there can be many hurdles, paperwork and so forth, before a prescription can be obtained. The good news is that we have access to clinics locally. Keperra Medical Centre in Dallas Parade, Keperra have been running clinics for over a year now. The experienced and knowledgable team can assist with the prescription of medical cannabis and can streamline the process, with access only taking about a week. Another perception that medical professionals often hear is that "I'd rather be using medical cannabis than opioid products any day. But it is so expensive to access” The cost of medicinal cannabis has been reduced considerably in recent years. This is due to its
popularity and the vast number of products that are now available. The doctors at Keperra Medical Centre are mindful about the importance of value for money when prescribing medicinal cannabis and can discuss costings. Treating Pain is holistic, taking medication is often part of the solution, lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep and functionality are also as important. The team at Keperra Compounding Pharmacy always ensure their clients have a good understanding of all that can be done to improve pain and wellbeing. Medicinal cannabis is by no means all that is available from Keperra’s Compounding Pharmacy. The Pharmacists work with you and your doctor to find the best option for you. This may be medicinal cannabis or one of many options such as PEA and LDN that are used in the management of pain. It is most often the case that patients and doctors are not aware of what is actually available from a compounding pharmacy. A good example is the pain creams. Up to four medications can be incorporated at once to provide a highly effective pain cream that can be applied directly to and penetrate deeply into the area that is hurting. If you or someone you know would like more information about medicinal cannabis or any of the pain options available please call Keperra’s Compounding Pharmacy 3355 3905

A Sensational Seniors in the Works A monthly update from Picabeen Community Centre, Mitchelton
Seniors Month will be celebrated all over Queensland throughout the month of October.
This year’s Seniors Month theme is Social Connection, celebrating the diversities and essential roles that older people play in our lives and in our communities. Connecting with one another has never been as important as it is now during the current global pandemic. Seniors Month celebrations aim to improve community attitudes towards older people, facilitate community participation, and enhance community connections. Picabeen will host three events to celebrate Seniors month, providing positive and engaging opportunities for our community to connect with others. Picabeen’s Seniors Week kicks off on Tuesday 12th October with a Scams Awareness Information session presented by Emily Gould from Uniting Care. Followed on Wednesday 13th with accredited dietician Tina Gingell hosting a cooking session based on the theme Cooking for One on a Budget. Our week wraps up on
Thursday 14th with local lawyer Tim Henry, of Henry Lawyers, presenting a Wills and Estates information session. All events will be held at Picabeen Community Centre and are free! Events have also been promoted on the Queensland Seniors Month website (https://qldseniorsmonth.org.au) and flyers have been posted onto our Facebook page. Be sure to call 3324 2555 if you are interested in RSVP’ing and attending any of these events. (Numbers will be capped to reflect current QLD Health restrictions. Picabeen Change Room Op Shop Do you have a fancy dress party coming up or another occasion where you need to find that ‘Special Something’ to wear? Our volunteers love helping our customers put together an outfit. In August we had a great time sourcing BOOK WEEK costumes for the kids! Our little op shop with a big heart has fashions and accessories starting from $1 for all the family. Be sure to pop in and say hi! We are open Monday to Friday 9am-4pm and Saturday 10am-1pm. Ladies! Join a Getting to Know you Gathering A update from the Newmarket VIEW Club
VIEW Club members at the Huskks Cafe in Windsor
For a social get-together, the Huskks Café in Windsor was a great venue for our members to lunch in September.
Page 22 - October 2021, The Everton Echo
Margaret McCormack and June Sakzewski led the table for a delicious lunch. Though we meet monthly for business and lunch at our new venue at the Alderley Arms Hotel in Samford Road, these social morning teas or lunches are very special ‘getting to know you’ gatherings for us. Post COVID lockdown, people are seeking the opportunity to connect with others in the community. VIEW needs the organisation to be in the forefront of the minds of those who are looking to expand their horizons, make new friends and give back to the community. The Newmarket VIEW Club is part of a network of over 300 clubs and 15,000 women throughout Australia. Our members used raffles and donations to raise funds to continue to support the six students following The Smith Family’s Learning for Life Program, by sponsoring their school activities. These children were among the hardest hit during school shutdowns, as many didn’t have the right tools they needed to learn from home. If you wish to know more about the Newmarket VIEW Club, email us on newmarketview@gmail.com or ring Heather on 0437 343 163.

Charity Status Achieved for The Nest Community!
The many faces that have made The Nest Community what it is today
During a tumultuous time when communities have had their lives changed in critical ways that promise to have long-term impacts, the Nest Community is proud to announce that they have officially been granted Charity Status!
Looking back at how The Nest came to be provides an outlook on who they are, how far they have come and where they are heading in the future. Nine years ago, two friends, Roz Fenson and Jodie Behn, hosted a Saturday afternoon craft group for their daughters' friends in Fallon Cottage, called "The Craft Nest Project". Inspired by their daughters, the goal was to provide young women a safe and supportive environment to develop and grow as individuals. The shared project gave the young women a sense of teamwork and solidarity, without the pressure of physical or academic ability. Overtime, Roz and Jodie saw an increase in participants and began to develop a peer-to-peer mentoring program. They devised a system where the elder girls were known as ‘Blue Birds’ and the younger as ‘Red Robbins’. The Blue Birds then empowered and mentored the Red Robbins. This is how The Nest began and it is the perfect example of what the organisation encompasses today. Roz and Jodie never imagined that this simple idea would grow into the Nest Community as it is today: a self-funded charity, supported by over 80 volunteers that provides a space for women to find purpose, form relationships and connect purposefully through the love of making. The Nest is proud to deliver an affordable workshop program, an on-site haberdashery thrift shop, regular pop-up craft stalls and a sustainable community garden. Since 2015, they have provided thousands of hours of social connection, delivered over 700 hundred workshops and diverted over 97,000 metres of fabric from landfill. It truly is incredible what the community is capable of when women support each other. Charity status is not easy to attain and this status legitimises the Nest’s value to the community and the services that they deliver. They are empowered by this and excited to see how they can grow the organisation even more. If there is one thing that the history of The Nest has taught us, it is that people like to help, they just don't know how. Wildflowers, Wood Fossicking & Workshops An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club
The last field trip the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club held was on the 11th and 12th of September to the Chinchilla – Miles district to fossick for petrified wood and various other materials in the area.
On Saturday we concentrated in the Greenswamp Road area, which is only about 10 Kms from Chinchilla. There are two fossicking areas here where you pay $5 a day to dig for wood etc. The payment is made at the Tourist Information Centre who will also give you directions to the digs. On the Sunday, we travelled to Miles and further north. After a short time fossicking along the side of a dirt road, we headed off for the wildflower circuit through what is known as the Gurulnundi Wildflower Some of the beautiful trail. The wildflowers were wildflowers found on the recent at their peak, and along this field trip road, there were several sites where you could pull up and photograph the flowers. There were information signs and photos describing what each flowers name is.
We are fortunate to have such a display of wildflowers which are accessible so close to Brisbane at this time of the year. Continuing along this road brings you out west of Drilham on the Warrego Highway, which is wheat growing country. We will be busy over the coming months sawing and polishing our petrified wood and other material collected on our Club trip. The club has reopened their workshop after the last Covid 19 lockdown. We are open on Thursday mornings 9am – 12noon and Saturday afternoon 1pm – 4pm with a limited number of four members who can attend each session. If you would like to come and look at our Lapidary Clubs workshop give John or Lloyd a call on 3351 1038 or 3351 2093.

Remember, Remember the 5th November From the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
Readers of this who are over 75 years old might remember a rhyme from their school days ‘Remember, remember the 5th of November’. That was a date for Guy Fawkes night when there would be bonfires, crackers and fireworks. Well now, ‘Remember, remember the 4th of November’ because that‘s when the Mitchelton and Districts 2019 Champion Exhibitor, Garden Club meets at the Barbara Linnett who celebrated her 90th birthday Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street (subject recently to Covid-19 restrictions). The guest speaker, Geof Robinson, will talk about Gerberas. Given suitable conditions - a sunny position in a well drained area (garden or big pot) gerberas are not difficult to grow. They like soil rich in organic material. Their huge colourful daisy-like flowers which bloom on long stems make this plant a good subject for cut flowers which come in single or double form. Geof will have lots more to tell at this meeting which commences at approx. 10am after morning tea which is served at 9.45am Visitors and new members are most welcome, During October keep adding compost, complete fertilizer and manure to your garden. If you prepare your own compost, check the heap and turn it each week to make sure there‘s plenty of oxygen going through it. This will also destroy germinating weed seeds and insects. Remove spent flowers on spring annuals. This encourages more to be produced and prolongs the life of the plant. The November meeting is the last meeting in 2021 where visitors can listen to a guest speaker. The club has its own activities for December, after which it goes into recess until the first Thursday in 2022. There was an added delight at the September meeting. Two of the Club‘s life members were having their 90th birthday that month. They were the president, Pat Killoran, and the 2019 Champion Exhibitor, Barbara Linnett. Both were presented with a bunch of flowers and everyone enjoyed a piece of their birthday cakes and a soft drink. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.
A Terrific Talk from Top Radio Presenter
The Ferny Grove Garden club will meet on the public holiday on Friday 29th October. The club is looking forward to a talk by Penny Hegarty, Horticulturist, and Sunshine FM presenter. Penny will share her wide knowledge of gardening in south-east Queensland. The club meets at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton at 1pm. For more information, please call the Secretary, Elizabeth on 07 3851 0568. Page 28 - October 2021 - The Everton Echo
TAX MATTERS
from local experts TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
Capital Gains Tax- When you sell assets such as property or shares you may incur a capital gain, and therefore be liable to pay capital gains tax. When you sell an asset for more than it cost you - you have a capital gain. If you sell it for less, you have a capital loss. There is a capital gains discount of 50% for Australian individuals who own an asset for 12 months or more. This means that you pay tax on only half the net capital gain on that asset. It is important if you own an investment property to keep all records associated with the purchase and sale of that property. Costs such as stamp duty, legal fees, real agent commissions, advertising etc are all costs that are used to reduce your net capital gain or increase your net capital loss. For example, Mary sells her investment property for $600,000. The cost base is $530,000 made up of $500,000 being the purchase price of the property, $15,000 stamp duty and $1,200 conveyancing fees. Sale costs of $1,300 conveyancing fees and $12,500 agent’s commissions. Mary’s capital gain on the property is $600,000-$530,000 = $70,000. Mary is entitled to a 50% discount so the net capital gain is $35,000 that Mary must include in her taxable income. If you have sold a property recently and need to get some advice on your likely gain or loss, please do not hesitate to reach out for assistance. Call TaxArana on 3351 6111

Old Northern Rd, Everton Park, is a major road which has thousands of cars travelling on it every day.
The section outside Everton Park State School (where it intersects Dargie Street) is notorious for accidents and dangerous driver behaviour. To ensure the safety of children when walking to and from school, we request that a pedestrian overpass be constructed over Old Northern Road.

THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
The children are enjoying the brand new LED lights
Arana Touch
It has taken four years and a venue change, but last month at last saw the official switch flicked on Arana Touch Football’s new $200,000 LED lights! When President and founder, Gary Madders, approached me to support this rapidly growing local club in 2017, I didn’t hesitate to throw my full support behind the club and got to work advocating on their behalf with the State Government. In 2018 the Palaszczuk Government agreed to provide funding
in the State Budget. It took until last year however, for Arana Touch to be properly installed in their new digs at West Mitchie. It's been quite the journey, but Arana Touch and its 750plus kids now have a new home and brilliant new LED lights which are so state-of-the-art they can be controlled by a phone app! Congratulations Gary Madders and Arana Touch and special thanks to West Mitchie for making this dream a reality for so many families!
Mark Furner MP with Mike Liddle, President of Wests Mitchelton, Gary Madders, President of Arana Touch, and Wade Lynch from Precision Sports Lighting + Electrical who installed the magnificent new lights!
Vaccine Appointments
We are in a race against the COVID-19 Delta variant, and we know that getting vaccinated is our best way to beat the virus. With supplies of the vaccine now available in Queensland, we now have the chance to get large numbers of Queenslanders protected as soon as possible. While we have been very safe from COVID-19 here in Queensland compared to the rest of the world, we know the day is coming when the Delta variant will get into our great state. We need to get as many people vaccinated as possible before that day happens. Vaccinations protect against the worst effects of COVID-19 – such as severe illness, hospitalisation, long-COVID and death. Getting as many Queenslanders vaccinated as possible will also protect others who can’t be vaccinated because of complicating medical conditions and will prevent our health system from becoming overrun in the event of an outbreak. Do your part and go to www.vaccinebookings.health.qld.gov. au or call 13 426 843 to register for a vaccine appointment with Queensland Health today.
