MSHS Spartans Take to Netball Courts

The young Spartans of Mitchelton State High School (MSHS) are firing up, competing in an exciting and recently established Netball Club to develop skills on and off the court.

Established in Term 3 of 2019, the now popular Netball Club began with 10 girls forming a junior team competing in one carnival. Since then, the netball club has increased to one social and three competitive teams comprising of 45 members. This is a huge achievement for a school with only 500 students! While the 2020 season was temporarily delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions, it is now back up and running, projected to finish at the end of the school year with all games and carnivals pushed back. All 3 competitive teams are set to play against local schools in the Super 7’s Carnival on August 28 at Pine Rivers Netball Association. The development of the MSHS Netball Club has encouraged a great relationship between Mitchelton State High School and Northside Christian College. The schools have organised for friendly training and gameplay meets to give the opportunity to learn from different coaches and players and form new friendships. The MSHS Netball Club was introduced by Physical Education teacher, Taylor Arnell, who joined the teaching staff in 2019. ‘I wanted to give the girls at MSHS the chance to be a part of something special: a team,’ said Miss Arnell. Miss Arnell believes team sports are invaluable to boosting confidence in young women. ‘Team sport can make students feel better about themselves physically, mentally and socially. When one player drops their head, the girls are instantly feeding them with encouragement and positive comments,’ she said. ‘Their behaviour and effort in classrooms has

significantly improved. The self-growth of the girls has been incredible.’ ‘Sporting teams also allow students to develop important life skills to help them in the real world. From learning how to deal with success and failures to taking on constructive feedback to improve performance,’ said Miss Arnell. MSHS Head of Department for Sport, Peter Roberts noted the last extra-curricular sports club for girls at MSHS was from 2008 to 2010. ‘We had a very successful girls’ cricket team driven by a young female teacher who was passionate about getting young girls into sport,’ he said. ‘All extracurricular activities need an enthusiastic person to drive them – whether it be sport, musicals, dance or debating.’ In addition to the 2020 season, the MSHS Netball Club is looking to begin fundraising efforts. Money raised will be used to fund a clinic with professional coaches, transport and carnival costs and excitingly, a visit from netball royalty, Vicki Wilson! Heads Down, Green Thumbs Up

A small organisation with big plans, Brook Community Garden is set to make a tree-mendous impact locally.

A number of years ago, local residents, Helen Moriarty and Keren Sweeney, began campaigning for the Garden’s establishment. It wasn’t until June 2018 that their efforts paid off, and they celebrated their success by hosting a smashing launch party on behalf of Brook Community Garden. The organisation has been growing from the ground up ever since! This exciting community garden is gaining momentum at the old pony club on McConaghy Street, Mitchelton. From young families to retirees, this group welcomes people of all ages with open arms—as long as you’ve got a green thumb! Brook Community Garden has a community composting hub, where locals are encouraged to drop off food scraps, such as fruits and vegetables. From here, Garden volunteers take the reins by turning the scraps into compost to use in the garden. The compost bins are added to every day, making them quite popular amongst the residents of Mitchelton. Not to mention, compost bins are super important in the realm of plant growth and fertilisation, as the compost helps retain moisture in soil in order for plants to have a better chance at survival. On top of having a composting hub, Brook Community Garden is also home to a garden—of course—made up of fruit lemon, lime, mulberry, and guava trees, as well as planted corn, tomatoes, lettuce, and beans for the spring. Also, the Garden holds what they call a ‘working bee’ every second Sunday, and a garden meeting on the last Sunday of every month. The most engaging element of Helen and Keren’s brainchild is the community workshops they hold for all ages, in which attendees learn indigo dyeing and native bee keeping, and more talents to come in the future! The Brook Community Garden family are passionate about sharing their knowledge about growing vegetables and composting to our community. With so many new apartment blocks sprouting up in the area, it is now more important than ever for people to have access to green spaces—and to be taught how to make the most of them. Brook Community Garden offers both of these things, as well as an opportunity to connect with like-minded neighbours. Don’t be-leaf me? Check out the Garden for yourself! Bringing local bowlers together

On Tuesday 4th August, many of Ashgrove Bowls Club’s former players played their first social bowls game at Gaythorne Bowls Club, after the recent unfortunate closure of Ashgrove Bowls Club.

The following weeks were challenging for bowlers from the Ashgrove club as they had to manage everything to formally close their club’s facilities. Many of them also had to transition to their new home at Gaythorne Bowls Club. To welcome Ashgrove bowlers to Gaythorne, the club executive hosted a free BBQ lunch at the club on the 15th August from 11am to 12:15pm for all Ashgrove and Gaythorne members. The lunch was a huge success and many friendships were formed. Gaythorne Bowls Club will now have three days of social bowls games on a Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon, with club competitions on Saturday afternoons. In addition, ‘Introductory Learn to Bowl’ sessions will be taking place in September and October in conjunction with Brisbane City Council’s GOLD (Growing Old Living Dangerously) Program. This program is designed for people aged 50 and over, however all other ages are welcome to attend and participate in the sessions. The club started its association with the GOLD program in 2016 and has introduced many people to the game of bowls and several of the participants have joined the club to continue improving their skills in this game. A bit about the Gaythrone Bowls Club. This local bowls club is a central meeting place for locals as the club hosts other clubs and organisations including a stamp

Brilliant Bocce!

Hello, my name is Mario De Marco. Welcome to my world of Bocce! As Secretary of the Newmarket Bocce Club (NBC), I would like to introduce you to Bocce.

They say that the game goes back to the Romans so, predominately, Bocce was European and introduced to Australia by immigrants from Europe - especially Italians - in the early 1900’s. For many years, it was played as a social recreation in backyards, streets, and suburban parks. In the 1950’s, following the post-war inflow of immigrants, it became an organised sport and part of ethnic Australian social culture. When Italian immigrants established large social clubs, Bocce courts were incorporated into them. However, today , recreational Bocce is still played in backyards and parks by all cultures. NBC is multi-cultural. There is one registered Bocce club left in Brisbane, being the NBC, which has four playing courts, situated at 23 Foster Street Newmarket (behind the ‘International City Church’). The original club on freehold land was the Italo-Australian Centre and this club was established in 1970. Unfortunately, it closed its doors in 2008 and the International City Church now occupies that parcel of land. As the Bocce courts were on council land at the rear of the property we incorporated the new Bocce club (NBC) in 2007, and we have access via the entrance of the church. It’s a game of skill; it’s challenging, but it’s also fun. The club is open on Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning and evening, and Friday evening. Coaching is available; including by arrangement on Sunday from 1pm. The club also has Sunday social competitions throughout the year including sponsored competitions with the only other club in Redlands City Council being the Redlands Sporting Bocce Club. Contact Tony Giacoboni on 0412 386 617 or Mario De Marco on 0403 257 325 for further details. So how does the game work? A game can be conducted between two players, or two teams of two, three or four. A match is started by a randomly chosen side being given the opportunity to throw a smaller ball, the jack (called a kitty, pallino, or a boccino in some areas), from one end of the court into a zone about five meters in length, ending two meters from the far end of the court (a court is about 27 meters long). The side that first played the jack is given the opportunity to bowl first. Once the first bowl has taken place, the other side has the opportunity to bowl. From then on, the side which does not have the ball closest to the

Image shows players from the NBC, the layout of Bocce courts and Bocce balls in play. jack must bowl until that side makes the point (is closer), then the opposing team plays: even if either team bowl all their Bocce in trying to do so. At that point, the other side bowls its remaining Bocce balls. The team with the closest Bocce ball to the jack is the only team that can score points in any end. The scoring team receives one point for each of their balls that is closer to the jack than the closest ball of the other team. The length of a game varies by region, but is typically to 13 points. Players are permitted to throw the ball in the air using an underarm action. This is generally used to knock either the jack or another ball away to attain a more favorable position. Tactics can get quite complex when players have sufficient control over the bocce ball to throw or roll it accurately. You probably have heard of Bare Foot Bowls. Well, we have something similar, but you must wear flat soled shoes. You can hire the courts for work or corporate events, birthday parties etc. E.g. we have the Alpha Romeo Club and the Fiat club every year; we have a firm of surveyors as well. WOW, they have fun. For more details contact the above. BYO drinks and food - we can cook it up for you and we also have members on hand to guide you through the game. As mentioned previously, the Newmarket Bocce Club is the only Bocce club left in Brisbane and so the community should embrace this sport and not let it die out. The club welcomes all cultures to play Bocce, young and old. There are other disciplines of the sport i.e. Raffa and Beach Bocce, no rules bocce, however at NBC we play Vuolo, a more traditional type game. Yours in Bocce Mario

Know all the details for downsizing!

A monthly update from the Older Women’s Network Queensland, Mitchelton Branch The Older Women’s Network Qld (OWNQ) Mitchelton Branch are restarting their monthly meetings on Wednesday 23rd September 2020. The subject for this discussion will be ‘Downsizing’. No, it is not losing weight - just shifting house!

Most of us reach a point where we want to simplify our lives and that involves selling up the family home and moving into something smaller. Often it’s because the home is too big or hard to maintain, or perhaps you just want to make that sea/tree change that you’ve always dreamt of. Whatever your reasons, the thought of selling can be quite daunting, especially if you haven’t done it for many years. This month’s guest speaker is Rachel Ross from Stellar Conveyancing. Rachel will guide the group through the practical side of selling. Amongst other things, she will discuss the roles of your The OWNQ branch's banner conveyancer, agent and bank; costs to outside Picabeen be considered; selling under Power of Community Centre Attorney; managing a simultaneous sale and purchase; and what to expect on settlement day. During August, members have been busy staying connected with one another, which is so important. They are continuing to adapt to the changing COVID-19 restrictions and are happy that face to face meetings at the Arana Leagues Club could take place and they continue their well established Zoom meetings. The Mitchelton Branch of OWNQ meets at the Picabeen Community Centre, 22 Hoben Street, Mitchelton 4053. The monthly meeting is on the 4th Wednesday of the month, commencing at 10am to 12pm, with a small cost of $5. All women are welcome. Youth Member wants to hear from YOU! Meet inspirational local, Imogen Waters, who at the young age of 21 has been selected be the a 2020 Youth Member of Parliament, representing the young people of Everton.

She is one of 93 young Queenslanders aged between 15 and 25 who have been selected from over 300 applicants to represent Imogen Waters, 2020 their communities in the YMCA Youth Member of Queensland Youth Parliament Parliament (QYP) program. For 25 years, QYP has been running to provide a unique environment for young people to engage with their community and be the voice of the youth in their electorate. Youth Members learn about governance and experience the parliamentary process first-hand, all while having their voice heard on issues important to them and making a change in their communities. The program provides a unique experience to develop skills in leadership, public speaking and confidence, as well as the opportunity to meet a diverse group of other like-minded youth and form lifelong friendships. Youth Members have the opportunity to be part of a committee and work together to prepare a Bill to be debated in Parliament. In October, they will take over the Legislative Assembly Chamber of Queensland Parliament for a week and experience the parliamentary process: they present their Bills, debate on topical issues and give Private Member Statements on issues

of their choice. Imogen is also a part of the Committee for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and helped to write a Bill that makes amendments to existing legislation with the objective of reducing Indigenous recidivism. Imogen is extremely excited for Residential Sitting Week in parliament, but in the mean time she is trying to be involved in her communities as much as possible. Imogen is reaching out to the local community and would love to know what you love about your community – whether that’s your electorate, suburb, school, sporting and community groups, or any other community. ‘I am honoured to be a voice for young people in our community and I am keen to talk about our community and hear a wide range of viewpoints on local and state issues. As such, I would love to hear from you!’ said Imogen. ‘I want to know what you think are some of the biggest issues in your community, and if you have any ideas to address them. If you want to know about the program and my role, please get in touch with me.’ If you would like to know more and stay up to date on the latest from this year’s Youth Members, search for YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament on Facebook or Instagram. TAX MATTERS from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills

The Federal Government has announced changes along with an extension of the JobKeeper payment. From September 28, 2020, businesses and not-for-profits who are seeking to claim JobKeeper payments will now be required to have their eligibility re-assessed for the JobKeeper extension. Actual turnover in the September quarter will be used to determine eligibility. Businesses and not-for-profits will need to demonstrate that they have met the decline in turnover test in this quarter to be eligible for JobKeeper from 28 September 2020 to 3 January 2021. To determine employee eligibility, the reference date for eligibility is now July 2020 with effect 3 August 2020, this may mean employees not previously eligible may now become eligible. The payment rate from September 28, 2020 will be reduced and paid at two rates. From September 28 to January 2021 the payment rate will be $1,200 per fortnight for all eligible employees, who in the four weekly pay periods before the reference period, were working in the business for 20 hours or more a week on average and $750 per fortnight for employees who were working in the business for less than 20 hours a week on average. From January 4, 2021 to 28 March 2021 the payment amounts will be $1,000 and $650 and again payment made will be determined by the hours worked. The changes may seem confusing at first glance but can be easily worked through. If you are unsure of what to do, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team at TaxArana. Details in advertisement below.

Keeping it casual with the Arana View Club

Arana VIEW Club are still meeting casually at present. At the last committee meeting, they decided to delay starting formal meetings until they all felt more comfortable with the present COVID-19 situation. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t catching up. Member Bonnie is producing a monthly newsletter which is sent to all members and their ‘coffee in the park’ get togethers are continuing. The most recent outing was to Arthur Davis Park in Sandgate with over 30 members in attendance. There is another outing planned for the 16th September at the Ferny Grove splash park and picnic grounds at the Upper Kedron Road and Samford Road intersections. BYO everything again. The club are still supporting their ‘Learning for Life’ students and making sure they receive the birthday gift cards. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the Arana View Club club, pop along to one of their mornings in the park. It is a lovely way to meet members informally and discover what they do for the Smith Family. Contact Sandra Clark on 0413 317 212 for more information.

Who Killed Betty Shanks?

A monthly update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. , 22-year-old student Betty Shanks left On Friday evening, 19 September 1952, the tram at the Grange terminus alone.

She had earlier completed her college night classes in the city. She started the short walk home to her residence in Montpelier Street. Within minutes, she was savagely attacked and bludgeoned to death. Her body was found at approximately 5.30am the next morning at a house on the corner of Thomas Street and Carberry Street, Grange, on Saturday 20th Sept., 1952 by a nearby resident who was a policeman. To this day, this tragic murder mystery has never been solved. It was called the night that Brisbane lost its innocence. Afterwards it was said residents always checked to ensure their doors were locked at night, and never again did people sleep outside on their verandas during those hot summer evenings. This notorious event has been the subject of several books, articles and film productions over the years – including ‘Who Killed Betty Shanks?’ by Ken Blanch. Betty Shanks As of today, a $50,000 reward remains in place for any person who has information about what happened on that fateful night back in 1952. Does anyone out there remember the tragic Betty Shanks murder and the impact it had on Brisbane, in particular the north western suburbs? Visit our Facebook page or email enoggerahistory@gmail.com Don’t forget, the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. has just re-opened its history display to the local community each Thursday morning from 9.30am. Just visit the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Wardell Street (parking in Trundle Street). Social distancing and COVID-19 rules apply, but you are most welcome to drop in for a look and a cuppa. Take care, everyone, Andrew McMicking, President The location that Betty‘s body was found on Thomas St.

A final Hoo-rah for 2020!

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club have just returned from a field trip to Chinchilla where they fossicked for petrified wood etc. As it was a long weekend they had the opportunity to travel to Miles and visit the Miles Historical Museum. Miles is about a thirty minutes drive west from Chinchilla. The historical museum has one John Nedwich from The of the best Lapidary displays Mitchelton Gem Club in South East Queensland as Digging for Petrified wood at well as many other interesting Chinchilla memorabilia. With petrified wood, most members like to cut the pieces in half and polish the faces for display purposes. A few members make cabochons from the petrified wood and some members just collect smaller pieces and polish them up in a Tumbler. To polish stones in a tumbler you start off with silicon carbide grit and water in a barrel. The barrels sometimes can go all day and night for weeks, depending on how rough the original stones were when put into the barrel. You just use finer and finer grit and in the end a polish is used – generally tin oxideto buff up the stones. The twenty-three members who made the trip all came home with enough material to keep them cutting and polishing for the rest of the year. We have no more trips planned for this year as the border closure makes it difficult to travel into New South Wales. The club is operating on a limited membership number who are allowed to visit the workshop at the various sessions. Workshop times are on a Thursday from 9a.m. to noon for cutting and polishing of material and from noon to 3p.m. for Silversmithing. The clubs areas have sanitising stations set up which members must adhere to and they have found social distancing has not been a problem with the use of their machines in the workshop as they are well spaced apart. Information regarding the club can be obtained on the website www.mitcheltondistrictsgemclub.wordpress.com or Facebook Page Mitchelton and District Gem Club Inc. If you would like to have a chat to someone regarding the hobby, do not hesitate to contact John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

Club Community Reunites

Arana Netball's return to netball in July has been a wonderful success, they are now over half way through and enjoying some great wins. The greatest part about being back on court for the club is being back with their greater netball community. Although the games look a little different this year, there are still plenty of opportunities to be involved in the netball community. Umpires are an integral part of every club and at Arana Netball they are lucky to have a great group of umpires representing them each week. Some are players and coaches and some, like Jason, do it to be involved in their child’s sport. All of Arana Netball's umpires are dedicated and willing to jump in and help each other out whenever it’s Jason taking to the court with umpiring duties. needed. 2020 is Jason’s first year umpiring netball and he is doing a stellar job! His attention to detail and considerate manner is welcomed court side each week. Not to mention, he’s quick, the girls have no chance of out running Jason. Welcome aboard Jason!

GRAB THAT GRANT! Welcome our new monthly column, Grab that Grant, which will provide invaluable information about accessing and applying for funding. This information is brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall, from Little Project Management Company, who has a wealth of knowledge Carolyn McCall and an insight into the industry.

‘Activate your purpose’

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, many for purpose organisations are struggling under the weight of change and uncertainty.

Successfully accessing funding has now become a difficult task for most. But as always, there are people out there willing to lend organisations a helping hand in these challenging times. Meet Carolyn McCall, a program designer and grant funding expert who lives and breathes her passion for initiating social change. She has played a pivotal role in award-winning projects across the globe, but Carolyn has since settled down in Brisbane to run her own business, the Little Project Management Company. Her expertise has led countless not for profits toward long-term prosperity. The one big question she is frequently asked is: How can I be successful in accessing funding? Grant funding is a great avenue for many non for profits and can help organisations maximise their impact, making it all the more vital for organisations. Carolyn’s top three tips for accessing grant funding are to: 1. Focus on your core vision – In the words of Carolyn, “I always work on developing a grant strategy before applying for any grants. Every idea or program should link back to the organisation’s vision, goals, and dreams. The Next Big Thing is very tempting, though sometimes it does not have the greatest impact.” It may be hard for enthusiastic business owners to take time cementing the foundation of their organisation before diving into The Next Big Thing. However, it is during this period that innovative ideas can come to fruition. 2. Create a community – Carolyn always encourages organisations to work together on programs to have better results for the community. COVID-19 has reinforced how important ‘community’ really is, and how a cohesive community can create a sense of belonging and trust for all, whilst offering members equal opportunities to participate. When two organisations work together and focus on their strengths, it more than doubles their chances of building a community. Grants funders love seeing how your project works with others to create social change. 3. Look at funding alignment – Finding a funding partner that shares your vision can help your organisation in the long term – by having support during delivery of your project or by increasing chances of securing funding over multiple years. Carolyn explains, “I always read a funder’s vision before applying for a grant – and it helps to use similar terminology to help them see how your project will fulfil their vision. Better still, have a friendly chat to them before applying.” Carolyn’s approach to developing programs and finding the right funding ensures that not for profits have a genuine chance at long-term success. Let’s build our community together!

What followed was an emotional hour of the best that the Everton community can be. There were tears and laughter and shared experiences that moved all in attendance. The great news for the NOW Business Network was that four new members were lining up to join, and help to make a positive difference in the local community. If you feel that you would like to help support local organisations and people then you should visit the NOW website at https://nowbusinessnetwork.com.au and look to join. An app that catches those sneaky UV rays

You can’t use temperature or cloudless skies to determine UV levels, but an advanced tool from SunSmart is here to help. To help us better determine invisible UV risk, SunSmart has developed an app with Deakin University’s Software and Technology Innovation Laboratory, called seeUV. The app uses augmented reality and real-time data from The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and the Bureau of Meteorology to give users a visual expression of sunburn risk and hidden UV rays in your environment. It also alerts users when the UV rating reaches dangerous levels. A UV Index reading of three to five signifies moderate risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. At this level people are advised to stay in shade during the middle of the day when the sun is strongest. The seeUV app also has a selfie mode that uses the same augmented reality technology to generate the long-term consequences of UV damage on a person‘s skin, such as premature ageing, wrinkles and sunspots. As your sunburn or tan fades, it can be hard to imagine how exactly it has affected your DNA. Especially as – for most of us – we won’t see the damage come to the surface of our skin for another decade or so. However, this clever app exposes us to the potential damage the UV rays may cause. This is a free app and is available from Google Play for Android and the Apple App Store.

Top 5 Group Exercises for Seniors

The Ekka westerly’s have died down and the warmer weather is just around the corner, so why not consider a new, gentle group activity to get out and about? Many of these activities are available in our local area, at community halls and private businesses, and you will be sure to find like-minded folks out looking for social connections as well as to get their bodies moving. Tai Chi - is a gentle Eastern exercise that can provide benefits including flexibility and muscle strengthening. There are no special equipment needs to commence Tai Chi so look for a local group or even a DVD from the local library. Yoga – there are many forms of Yoga to suit all fitness levels, including chair-based yoga if you are not too steady on your feet. The benefits from a regular yoga practice do not only improve your body, they can also improve your mind with reduced stress and anxiety being a common side effect. Classes are prolific in most neighbourhoods and there are even free classes held outdoors by Moreton Bay Regional Council from time to time. Walking Group – there are many groups based in our

Page 20- September 2020, The Everton Echo

community that have regular, organized walks; new walkers of all fitness levels are always welcome. Ask around your friends and family for a recommendation, start your own group, or try the Heart Foundation website at www.walking. heartfoundation.org.au Pilates – traditional Pilates is a low-impact activity originally created to rehabilitate wounded WW1 soldiers. It looks to improve core strength, balance and posture by using resistance from your own body weight, a stretchy band and ring, or a more advanced level Pilates reformer machine. Aquatic exercise – the warm water of an exercise pool provides a low-impact and low-weight-bearing way to exercise, reducing the risk of injury, stress on the joints, and most importantly, reducing the risk of falls. Regular aquatic exercise can lead to improved muscle mass, increased strength and general fitness, as well as being an effective way to recover from injury. Many local swimming pools have organized classes for differing ages and fitness levels. Also, before embarking on any type of new physical activity, please consider if it is appropriate for you and have a chat to your GP. Getting out and about is a big part of life, and our team can support you in being part of the activities and events that matter to you. At Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD, we offer a range of services, from companionship to transport, to helping you attend work, volunteer commitments, social outings, family gatherings, recreational activities, community events, and more. We can provide support for just a few hours, or on a regular basis. It’s up to you.

Dried Mango v’s Fresh Mango

Dried mango is a true tropical delight! This treat lets you enjoy the luscious, sweet taste of real mangoes anytime and anywhere. Rich in vitamin A, B-complex vitamins, dietary fiber, and antioxidants, dried mangoes can be a wonderfully healthy addition to your diet. However, although dried mango may be a convenient alternative to fresh mango, it is significantly higher in sugar and calories. Dried mango packs over 300 calories per 80g portion (compared to 53 calories in 80g of fresh mango), and over four times the amount of sugar, at 63g per 80g portion. Although dried mango does have have many benefits, it is always wise to watch your portion size and perhaps opt for fresh mango where possible.

6 reasons to hit the trails this weekend

Tired of running mindlessly on the treadmill at the gym? Sick of running along the same bitumen road? Well, not only do we have some of the most incredible bushlands to explore around our region, but there are also lots of great reasons to move your running sessions outdoors. Checkout some of the many benefits that trail running can bring to your health below. 1. Improved Practical Endurance: While running on a treadmill keeps you working out on a flat, stable, consistent surface, trail running is variable. This is a great boost to your practical endurance and will work muscle groups you didn’t know you had. 2. Increase Leg Strength: Trail running pushes your muscles in a variety of challenging ways. Your muscles will grow and adapt to incline and decline running, and you’ll gain explosive speed from jumping up and off rocks and other natural obstacles. 3. Burn More Calories: The increased effort from the elevation and altitude will help your body burn more calories. If you want to lose weight quickly, you’ll burn fat much quicker doing high-intensity training on bushland trails than flat-surfaced runs. 4. Improve Your Balance: Anyone can run straight without losing their balance, but trail running isn’t quite as easy. Learning to navigate rocks, roots and all the other aspects of nature will provide you with real-world running skills. 5. Take A Mental Break: Trail running and walking has been shown to decrease worry, anxiety, and negative thoughts. Connect with nature in a meaningful, relaxing way, forget your hectic life and responsibilities, and hit the trails! 6. Enjoy A Stress-Free Workout: Out on the trails, you don’t have to stress about crowds or traffic. Just you and the dirt path - and occasionally the wildlife. If you are interested in joining a local trail running group, check out the Upper Kedron trail runners group at www.facebook.com/ UpperKedronTrailRunners/

Get Growing: Spring Gardening Tips from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club

The garden needs lots of attention in the month of September. Seeds for summer annuals such as Petunias, Marigold, and Phlox will flower for Christmas. Vegetable seedlings need planting too. Ensure the growing patch is well nourished and plenty of mulch is used. Shrubs need tidying up and treatment for disease or insect attack. Hibiscus should be pruned and fed. Don't forget, it’s a good time to propagate some of the cuttings. Poinsettia’s need cutting back almost to the main trunk. Be careful to avoid the milky sap from this as it can be harmful to eyes and skin. It is wise to clean the sap from your tools while its fresh, too. Citrus trees would benefit from attention to remove sooty mould, scale and leaf miner. These trees are coming into bloom, so use insecticides that won't hurt the bees. Alas, we must not neglect the lawn. There's lots to check there, such as the levelling of uneven spots on planting lawn seed where needed, not to mention getting rid of weeds. If there are no changes in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, on the 1st October, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. At the time of going to press, arrangements for the guest speaker had not been confirmed, but be rest assured, the meeting will contain something of interest for those present. Please note that the hall is close to public transport and is accessible via wheelchair. The meeting commences immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45am. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information, please phone the President, Pat on 3356 1256.

The Golden Rules for researching Genealogy

Many people think that researching your family history is just a simple matter of logging onto one of the big popular genealogy websites, searching for a family members name, and bingo. You have the person and your family members all before you. It seems to be as easy as the popular TV show makes it. However, there are a few golden rules for genealogy that you should really keep in mind. Here are just two of them: 1. Don’t believe everything you read. Birth, death and marriage certificates can have errors. Misspelling, incorrect dates, human error during transcription of the certificate and other mistakes are all too common. 2. If the document/certificate exists, read it! Don’t rely on someone else’s interpretation of the original document. While researching your ancestors can be extremely rewarding and great fun, don’t work in isolation. Experienced researchers know all the traps and how to avoid fruitlessly researching the wrong person. Queensland Family History Society has a number of special interest groups that focus on a number of countries and are there to help you avoid the traps and give you some tips and tricks to make your research journey rewarding. Check out the Queensland Family History groups and contact the convenor at https://www.qfhs.org.au/groups/ Their events are for the beginner to the advanced researcher. For more details visit

Youngsters Motoring ahead thanks to Mentors

Have you ever wondered how young people gain their drivers licence when they have no access to a vehicle or adult supervisor? Salvos Drive for Life, a learner driver mentoring program, aims to help them. A sister (but separate) program operates at Lawnton.

Established in 2017, through The Salvation Army Youth Outreach Service Stafford, Drive for Life connects volunteer mentors with young people who face challenges in accruing the required 100 supervised driving hours. The program supports the Brisbane North area. By working regularly with a volunteer mentor, a young person gains confidence and driving skills, enabling them to achieve their driver licence. Obtaining a driver licence is a milestone and helps them to pursue their goals in life. Volunteer mentors are fully supported in their role as coach, through induction, educational workshops and peer mentor support. The program has helped approximately 40 young people and could not do what it does without its mentors’ A happy P-Plater thanks to the Drive for Life program! generosity of spirit. Drive for Life Stafford now needs more volunteer mentors. The minimum volunteer commitment is two hours per week supervising a learner driver. Mentors require nothing more than their driving skills and experience to share with the young person. One important attribute is, naturally, an interest in working with young people. Mentors start working with a learner when 30 logbook hours are recorded. ‘Three things I enjoy most about Drive for Life are the program’s flexibility, regular social contact and improved driving knowledge I have gained since joining. Seeing my mentee pass their driving test is a great motivator for my continuing involvement in the program.’said Lisa, Volunteer Mentor since 2017 The program receives funding from the Queensland Government’s Community Road Safety Grants Scheme, operating with safety at the forefront of every supervised driving session. Remidee Rising to Stardom

I t ’s n o t e v e r y d a y that you stumble across an actor in our community—especially one who is in their first year of primary school!

Remidee Hayes, Stafford Heights’ favourite little pocket rocket, has already had her fair share of the limelight. Before Remidee could even walk, she had crawled her way onto Australia’s billboards—a product of the TV commercials she featured in as a baby. One of these commercials was for Vaccination Matters, which also appeared in pamphlets Local rising star, Remidee Hayes and the Brisbane Child Magazine. Being no stranger to cameras, it is not a surprise that Remidee has been a part of some short films, including A Godless Country, in which she played the main character. More exciting yet, Remidee’s first feature film, Occupation: Rainfall is set to hit cinemas later this year. Occupation Rainfall, an Australian-produced Sci-Fi blockbuster, tells an intergalactic tale of willpower and resistance, as survivors of an alien invasion fight for their planet. Remidee plays a village child, and is working alongside Ken Jeong (Crazy Rich Asians), Dan Ewing (Home and Away), Daniel Gillies (The Originals, Vampire Diaries), and many more familiar faces. Stay tuned for the film’s upcoming release! But there is more to Remidee than simply her acting skills. The rising star is also a beauty queen in pageants, a red belt in karate, a ballet, jazz and tap dancer at Conroy Dance, a pianist, and a swimmer. She is more than just a triple threat; Remidee is the whole she-bang! And being only a prep student from Grovely State School, these are all mighty big achievements. However, despite having such a vast array of hobbies, acting still holds the dearest place in Remidee’s heart. She admits that she loves seeing herself on TV and adores all the attention and support she gets from our community. So, watch this space!

A community club that empowers women News from the Newmarket VIEW club ‘Voice, Interests and Education of Women’

The 2020 Committee, Roslyn Arden, Jean Robinson, Heather Nightingale, Christine Newman, Lynette Harrington, Ann Rammerath and Frances Carter

Unfortunately no meetings have been held for the Newmarket VIEW Club since January, 2020 due to the restrictions brought about by COVID-19.

However, news from the head office has still been sent out by the President and Vice- President, to keep members up to date with news throughout the clubs. As the Gaythorne RSL will not be allowing functions in the upstairs function rooms until 2021, a social lunch was arranged in the Bistro for this month. Only 40 members were able to attend, each purchasing their own meals, however at least the ladies were able to get together and socialise. Hopefully, this gettogether can be continued until normal life returns. The Newmarket VIEW Club, is a small, friendly organisation seeking community-minded women. VIEW members come from all walks of life, and they would be delighted if you could join them in their mission to provide better educational opportunities for young Australians. The club supports The Smith Family’s ‘Learning for Life’ program and they are currently sponsoring six school students. If you wish to know more about the Newmarket VIEW Club, email them on newmarketview@gmail.com or ring our president, Heather, on 0437 343 163 or vice-president, Jean, on 0438 177 176

Enoggera Ward News Cr Andrew Wines Brisbane City Councillor for Enoggera

Our local parks and greenspaces are vital to our community. They provide space for our community groups to gather and bring people together through sport and recreation. Cr Wines and Brisbane City Council is committed to improving these spaces to continue making our neighbourhoods even better. By improving our local facilities we are encouraging people to get involved in their local community. Here are some local greenspace improvements and activities that have recently occurred in Enoggera Ward.

Enoggera Memorial Park Playground Upgrade

Enoggera Memorial Park is a key community site and a space local residents have a keen interest in and that is why funding was allocated to upgrade the playground at the Hurdcotte Street end of the park. The existing playground was overhauled with new play equipment and shade installed to create a far more appealing and exciting play space for local families. This installation is in conjunction with the playground upgrade that occurred last financial year at the northern end of the park, which was the first step towards lifting the standard of this major park in the Enoggera Ward.

New Lights for Everton District Sporting Club

New flood lighting has finally been installed at the Everton District Sporting Club, with Council providing a $110,000 grant through the Building Stronger Communities program. This upgrade involved installing new lights on the main oval to enable the playing of night games and subsequent revenue to support the many clubs that call the Enoggera Memorial

The Tigers Australian Football Club (Mayne), the Everton Wolves Junior Australian Football Club, the Ashgrove Cricket Club and Everton Park Roosters Junior Rugby Union Club will all greatly benefit from this incredible improvement to their playing fields.

Field Upgrade for West Mitchelton Rugby League Football Club Major rehabilitation works have been conducted by Council to improve the main playing field for the West Mitchelton Rugby League Football Club. This project involved upgrading the 8300m² field through levelling of the site, installation of a new subsurface irrigation system, including a water tank, turfing and field maintenance. These works have addressed potential safety implications and enabled the Club to cost effectively maintain a safer playing surface. This new playing field will not only benefit the Club’s 600 members, but other users of this greenspace - like the Brisbane Rhinos - and will hopefully encourage more people to become involved in our north-west sporting community.

Gaythorne RSL Holds Vietnam Veterans Service in Sid Loder Park

The Gaythorne RSL Sub-Branch held its annual Vietnam Veterans Day Commemoration Service again this year on August 18th in Sid Loder Park. This ceremony is to recognise the contribution of 60,000 Australians who served in the Vietnam War, of which 521 soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation and over 3000 came back wounded. Cr Wines laid a wreath at the Sid Loder Park memorial on behalf of Brisbane City Council and the residents of Enoggera Ward. Many of our local parks have memorials for those who have served our country for any residents that are wanting to have a moment of silence to pay their respects.

Supporting local business

Fifty-one local businesses in the Ferny Grove Electorate have shared in over $460,000 in Small Business Adaption Grants. The grants are part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Unite and Recover strategy to support small businesses and keep people in work and keep businesses trading during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have seen a tremendous change in the way countless businesses work with many for example, now opting for a greater online presence. These grants have provided a direct and immediate support for that transition.

Supporting local clubs and not-for-profits

Gaythorne Community Kindergarten and North West Youth Accommodation are two of five local community groups sharing in more than $150,000 in Round 104 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund Queensland. The Community Kindy grant money will be used to upgrade the outdoor play area; while the Youth Accommodation grant will allow the service to upgrade the furniture and whitegoods on all their properties.

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: $100M UPGRADE OF THE INTERSECTION OF SOUTH PINE ROAD AND STAFFORD ROAD.

An LNP Government will commit $100m to the direct upgrade of the notorious Stafford and South Pine Roads intersection (stage 2). According to the RACQ, this intersection is in the top ten most congested bottlenecks in Brisbane. I have been applying pressure on the State Labor Government for the last five years for this upgrade. Last election, I committed $26m for Stage 1 of the upgrade, the Everton Park Link Road, which the Government eventually matched. This work has commenced and will be completed by 2021. I want to see work started on Stage 2 of this upgrade as soon as the Everton Park Link Road is complete. The intersection upgrade’s additional lanes and safety improvements for all road users will save travel time and save lives. This upgrade will give local businesses a boost by busting congestion, which will unlock their potential to create more jobs in the future. The LNP will also create more than 300 construction jobs along the way.
