Feature Welcome to The Hills Echo’s annual spring health and wellbeing guide, The Health Hub. This edition is jam packed with health and wellbeing news and information from The Hills Districts and Surrounds. Look out for Edition Two of this feature in our October issue.
6 reasons to hit the trails this weekend
Tired of running mindlessly on the treadmill at the gym? Or are you sick of running along the same bitumen road? Well, not only do we have some of the most incredible bushlands to explore around The Hills District, but there are also lots of great reasons to move your running sessions outdoors. Checkout just some of the benefits that trail running can bring to your health below. 1. Improved Practical Endurance: While running on a treadmill keeps you working out on a flat, stable, consistent surface, trail running is variable. This is a great boost to your practical endurance and will work muscle groups you didn’t even know you had. 2. Increase Leg Strength: Trail running pushes your muscles in a variety of challenging ways. Your muscles will grow and adapt to incline and decline running, and you’ll gain explosive speed from jumping up and off rocks and other natural obstacles. 3. Burn More Calories: The increased effort from the
elevation and altitude will help your body burn more calories. If you want to lose weight quickly, you’ll burn fat much quicker doing high-intensity training on bushland trails than flat-surfaced runs. 4. Improve Your Balance: Anyone can run straight without losing their balance, but trail running isn’t quite as easy. Learning to navigate rocks, roots and all the other aspects of nature will provide you with real-world running skills. 5. Take A Mental Break: Trail running and walking has been shown to decrease worry, anxiety, and negative thoughts. Connect with nature in a meaningful, relaxing way, forget your hectic life and responsibilities and hit the trails! 6. Enjoy A Stress-Free Workout: Out on the trails, you don’t have to stress about crowds or traffic. Just you and the dirt path…and occasionally the wildlife. If you are interested in joining a local trail running group, check out the Upper Kedron trail runners group at www. facebook.com/UpperKedronTrailRunners/

The Ritual HQ Difference
Ritual HQ have been in the Hills District for just over 18 months and has already established themselves as something different in the fitness industry, not only inside of the gym, but also in the local community. On site, their personalized approach to membership is helping give confidence, support and direction to those who may have once felt lost inside a gym. Every member is provided with a personalized training program and access to small group training classes that are limited in size to allow for high quality coaching - not just instruction. Ritual HQ is home to an experienced team of seven coaches that know their members names, provide high quality one-on-one and group training, as well as specialized nutrition advice. For these reasons, this is an extensive and complete fitness service. In the community, Ritual’s own “RHQ Army” can be found at local events lending a spare set of hands where they are needed most. From the Easter Egg Hunt at Teralba Park to school breakfasts, fetes and colour runs, this team of volunteers - made up of coaches and members alike - have been helping community events run with a little more manpower. This is based on the Ritual HQ owners’ strong belief in giving back to the community. Helping members establish habitual training and nutrition habits, providing a highly personalized service, and giving back to the community are just a few characteristics that define Ritual HQ as a different experience in your search for health and wellbeing. Treating mental health and cognitive difficulties
Many mental disorders are associated with disrupted cognitive function including difficulties in attention, concentration and memory. These issues can impact the ability to live independently, engage in day-to-day tasks and to manage social interactions. However, Felisa Golingi, a Clinical Neuropsychologist at Pine Rivers Private Hospital, says an array of treatment options are available. Firstly, Dr Golingi says combining standard treatments targeting mental health issues, for example psychopharmacological treatments, with cognitive behavioural interventions for addressing cognitive difficulties is an important avenue for clinical treatment. “Growing empirical evidence demonstrates group skills-based psychosocial interventions are valuable components of treatment which alleviate cognitive difficulties and the associated psychosocial impacts,” Dr Golingi said. “A review of psychosocial interventions have identified common elements across treatment packages with positive outcomes.” Dr Golingi said these treatments include psychoeducation & training in concrete skills - such as organisation and planning strategies, time management and goal setting. Dr Felisa Golingi “An emphasis on implementing these strategies in one’s own daily life, and benefits of mindfulness and emotion regulation skills training can address emotional and behavioural factors, influencing cognitive functions. These key components of this type of therapy have been incorporated into the ‘Optimising your Potential Program’ which is available at Pine Rivers Private Hospital and focuses on developing: • Concrete skills around organisation, planning, goal setting, time management, task management, and memory strategies • Psychological tools around managing unhelpful thoughts and regulating emotion • How to implement this learning in interpersonal contexts and vocational contexts. The importance of self care
You work hard to take care of your family and friends, but how much time do you actually invest in taking care of yourself? Making your needs a priority will help you—and the others around you—experience a better quality of life. If you frequently feel run down, stressed, overwhelmed or tired, make sure you spend some time on YOU. Here are a few health tips:
Prioritise exercise
Taking just 30 minutes out of your day to exercise can get your heart rate up, strengthen key muscle groups, release endorphins to give your mood a boost and help you get in shape.
Eat for health
Make a meal plan for yourself or just cook up larger batches of healthy recipes when you have time, so you always have something when things get busy. Your Curves coach can help with strategies for healthy eating.
Sleep
Most adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night to tackle the day with more energy and motivation.
Relax on purpose
Meditation and relaxation exercises may help you wind down after a busy day and feel more grounded. When it comes to self-care, at Curves Mitchelton you can receive a 30-minute total body workout, a supportive environment and a healthy eating plan. We’ll give you support to reboot - for yourself AND those you love.

‘Only when one cannot sleep does one know how long the night is’
Tired of not sleeping? Anyone who’s ever experienced an occasional bout of insomnia can relate to this. Daily stress and pressures, body aches and pains, uncomfortable beds or pillows, and a host of other issues can keep us from getting enough quality sleep. Sleep is ESSENTIAL to good health. It is one of the most important functions of the brain. Through it, our bodies rest, recharge and regenerate for the next day’s challenges. Here are some helpful tips for a better night’s sleep: • Exercise daily. • Limit sugar, caffeine and alcohol especially in the evening. • Reduce screen time, at least one hour before bed. • Go to bed and wake up every morning at the same time. • Keep your bedroom cool, dark and a comfortable temperature. • Invest in a mattress that provides support for your spine. • Purchase a contoured pillow - this provides support for your neck curve and a chance for your muscle to really relax. • Use a form of Magnesium to help with muscle aches . • Rub lavender oil onto the soles of your feet at night.

Everyone was a beginner at some point
With over 20 years combined experience in the fitness industry, Enhance PT is a Group Fitness and Mobile Personal Training service based in the North of Brisbane. They are passionate about helping people reach their fitness goals without all the yelling and intimidation you might find elsewhere. Enhance PT fosters a strictly non-competitive environment where classes are lead by experienced and mature female trainers only. They want to get to know you personally – you are never just another client. Owner and operator Miranda Pardon uses her age as a selling point. “I’m not a 25 year old gym bunny. I’m on the cusp of fifty and I don’t look like Michelle Bridges. I started my journey into health and fitness in my early forties and I’ve never felt happier, healthier, stronger or more energized in my life. I know that some people feel reluctant to start an exercise program because they feel intimidated by that hard-core gym-type image. At Enhance PT we want to change that perception. Fitness is not a one size fits all equation and the truth of the matter is that you don’t have to work out like a crazy person to achieve results. I personally don’t enjoy going to gyms and I certainly don’t respond well to anyone yelling at me while I am exercising. We like to have fun and have a laugh along the way.” Enhance PT offer a variety of general group fitness classes, yoga classes along with two special interest groups; Mums with Bubs and Over 55’s. Classes are run across the week at both Arana Hills and Samford. For further information visit enhancept.com.au or find them on Facebook.
A Haven of High-Quality Skincare
Amisi is the Hills District’s very own miniature skincare empire. All products are handmade in Bunya, and are designed to be simple to use, effective and affordable. Healthy, glowing and naturally nourished skin is their guarantee! Of course, there’s a method behind this magic. Small batches of products are derived from cold pressed plant oils, clay, oatmeal, floral waters, and extracts of fruits, herbs and flowers. Additionally, organic, Australian-grown aloe juice is used in the place of water as it is a more nutrient-rich ingredient for skin. To incorporate the highest naturally known source of Vitamin C into the brand, Kakadu Plum was introduced. This extract is harvested wild by Indigenous communities, exclusively in the Kimberley’s, Northern Territory and Arnhem Land. Currently, it is included in the Sandalwood and Vanilla Moisture Cream. This artisan brand sources the highest quality ingredients from local and international markets of ethical and sustainable suppliers. For instance, the award-winning Gardenia Body Balm uses Shea butter that is organic and a product of fair trade. Using traditional methods, a co-operation of women in Africa craft it by hand. Each sale enables them to support their families and communities. Is Stress Wiping You Out?
Did you know that a little stress is healthy? It challenges you and makes you stronger. But stresses are not always easy to resolve and your stress response may be constantly activated. Stress without adequate recovery may substantially affect your energy levels leaving you tired and fatigued. The average adult juggles a multitude of commitments leaving little time for relaxation. Your brain is the first organ that senses stress. It responds by sending messages to your adrenal glands that then release Cortisol to help you deal with stress. With long term stress, the brain may try to self-regulate itself by toning down these signals as a form of protection. This leads to low energy and can often wipe you out. Local Acupuncturist and Naturopath, Patricia McNab, is well aware of how stress affects our body. Over the last 30 years, Patricia has helped many people who find life gets too tough. She can personalise treatments including herbal, nutritional, lifestyle and acupuncture to help your body find more energy to get you back to your old self. Patricia practices at Ferny Chiropractic in Ferny Hills. If stress is wiping you out, make an appointment with Patricia today by calling 3351 0933. She will be able to help you find the real you again!!
Legal Health Check-ups Going to a Lawyer for legal advice is usually the last thing you want to spend your valuable time and money on. With online legal resources readily available, a ‘do it yourself’ option may seem easier at first glance. However, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to the law. All legal situations are unique and many various areas of law overlap. It is important to seek confidential legal advice from a trusted advisor who can address your specific legal situation, which may include some or all of the following: • Employment and Self-Employment (Unfair Dismissal, Adverse Action, Industrial Disputes, Underpayment of Wages) • Work Health and Safety (Compliance, Incidents, Investigations) • Personal Injury, Workers’ Compensation, Motor Vehicle Accidents • Family (Separation, Domestic Violence, Property & Finance, Parenting) • Superannuation, Income Protection Insurance, Life Insurance • Estate Planning and Administration (Wills, Trusts, Enduring Power of Attorney, Advanced Health Directive, Probate) • Property (Purchasing, Selling, Commercial and Residential Tenancy Agreements) • Dispute Resolution and Litigation • Traffic Offences (Drink Driving) • Debt Recovery, Bankruptcy, Insolvency It is always best practice to be preventative rather than reactive by seeking legal advice at an early stage. The worry and stress caused by an unaddressed legal issue also has the potential to negatively impact upon your health and wellbeing. It is the same as avoiding a painful toothache. Leaving a legal issue too late can be costly both personally and financially for you as well as your loved ones. If you are experiencing legal aches and pains, contact your legal adviser for a check up.

Is dried mango as healthy as fresh mango?
Dried mango is a true tropical delight! This treat lets you enjoy the luscious, sweet taste of real mangoes anytime and anywhere. Rich in vitamin A, B-complex vitamins, dietary fiber, and antioxidants, dried mangoes can be a wonderfully healthy addition to your diet. However, although dried mango may be a convenient alternative to fresh mango, it is significantly higher in sugar and calories. Dried mango packs over 300 calories per 80g portion (compared to 53 calories in 80g of fresh mango), and over four times the amount of sugar, at 63g per 80g portion. Although dried mango does have have many benefits, it is always wise to watch your portion size and perhaps opt for fresh mango where possible.
Being active can add years to your life and life to your years!
Think of all the activities you loved as a child. Playing with others always made you feel good, didn’t it? Whatever your age, when you move more you feel better. This is because your body releases endorphins, which are a natural mood booster. You can decompress, relieve stress, or work out your frustrations with every little movement. It seems that every week there’s new research recommending strength training and resistance exercise for prevention, management and recovery. Weight control, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes prevention and management can all be supported. Stronger muscles and bones, more flexible joints and prevention of cancers, osteoporosis and management of joint pain are also supported by healthy lifestyle choices. Your immune system and emotional health benefit as sleep quality improves, allowing the body to heal and restore. Health experts around the world now recommend 150 minutes of moderateintensity activity per week (i.e. 30 minutes, 5 times per week), plus muscle strengthening activity that involves all major muscle groups 2 or more times per week. So how do you move forward? Curves is the perfect match! Empower yourself by building strength, which will tone your muscles. Getting toned can make you feel younger, look better and stand taller. Now that’s worth the work! For a personal consultation and assessment, phone 3354 4455 or visit Curves Mitchelton on Facebook. www.hillsecho.com
Is your current hayfever medication letting you down?
Hayfever is one of the most common allergic conditions, and its effects are felt by more than a quarter of Australians. The symptoms of the allergies of hayfever are wide ranging, from puffy eyes to itchy throat and are highly variable depending on local weather and environmental conditions. They even extend beyond physical effects and a sudden bout of hayfever can leave you feeling miserable and unwilling to venture outside, even on the sunniest spring days. What many hayfever and allergy suffers don’t realise is that relief could just be round the corner. An app that catches those sneaky UV rays
You can’t use temperature or cloudless skies to determine UV levels, but an advanced tool from SunSmart is here to help. To help us better determine invisible UV risk, SunSmart has developed an app with Deakin University’s Software and Technology Innovation Laboratory, called seeUV. The app uses augmented reality and realtime data from The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) and the Bureau of Meteorology to give users a visual expression of sunburn risk and hidden UV rays in your environment. It also alerts users when the UV rating reaches dangerous levels. A UV Index reading of three to five signifies moderate risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure. At this level people are advised to stay in shade during the middle of the day when the sun is strongest. The seeUV app also has a selfie mode that uses the same augmented reality technology to generate the long-term consequences of UV damage on a person‘s skin, such as premature ageing, wrinkles and sunspots. As your sunburn or tan fades, it can be hard to imagine how exactly it has affected your DNA. Especially as – for most of us – we won’t see the damage come to the surface of our skin for another decade or so. However, this clever app exposes us
Page 28 - October 2019, The Hills Echo
to the potential damage the UV rays may cause. This is a free app and is available from Google Play for Android and the Apple App Store.
Stay Safe in the Sun
Brisbane is known as the Skin Cancer Capital of the world. With more than 1300 Australians dying each year from skin cancer, one in two Australians will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Education, prevention and early detection are the keys to reducing your risks of skin cancer. The biggest cause of skin cancer is too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation, usually from sunlight. Even mild sunburn can cause lasting damage to normal skin. You can be exposed to dangerous levels of UV even in winter. The risk of skin cancer increases as we get older. People with fair skin, which burns easily, or those with natural red or blond hair are potentially at greater risk of skin cancer. So too are those with many moles or a family history of skin cancer or a weakened immune system. Every change in a mole is potentially an alarm signal. If you notice any of the following changes, we recommend you book in for a skin check with a Skin Cancer doctor: change in colour; irregular edges; a change in the surrounding skin such as reddening, itching or an odd sensation, scaling, roughness or bleeding; a sore that doesn’t heal; a mole that bleeds or new moles especially when occurring after 25 years of age. Stay SunSmart. Lowering your risk of skin cancer can be as simple as avoiding long exposure to intense sunlight and practicing sun safety. And get your skin checked for summer!

Handing Hearing Aids to the Rescue
1898 heralded the first electric hearing aid, invented by Miller Reese Hutchinson. 121 years on, we experience continuing technological advances in hearing aids that bear resemblance to spy devices with intuitive artificial intelligence. Technology has indeed moved ahead in leaps and bounds and, at Impact Hearing, we fit hearing aids featuring the latest technology. With these developments comes hearing aids that can be paired with Apple and Android apps to provide a complimentary range of added features at your fingertips. Some of the latest features available with hearing aids and apps include: Phonak myCALL-to-Text app. When paired with Phonak Marvel hearing aids, this feature allows you to read in real time what the person on the other end of the phone is saying, and in 80 languages. The Resound Smart™ app features a Remote Fine Tuning function. Using the app, you can request remote assistance from your Audiologist, who can make adjustments to your hearing aid settings and send them to you, so you can save directly to your hearing aids. The Oticon ON app features a linkable ‘If This Then That (IFTTT)’ channel. Incorporating IFTTT technology means hearing aid users can increasingly make the most of wireless technology. For example, if you have a wireless doorbell you can programme your hearing aids to alert you when someone rings the bell. More outrageously, you can set your hearing aids to notify you when a an Astronaut enters space! The Starkey Thrive™ app features Healthable™ technology. This includes body activity tracking, fall detection alerts and heart rate tracking. It also gives you personalised control over your hearing aids and settings. These are just a few of the latest features available through
apps paired with certain hearing aids. If you would like to make the most of the latest hearing aid technology and apps available please contact us at Impact Hearing on 3289 5563 to make an appointment.

Stress in the 21st Century
What is it and why is it important to address?
With Integrative Pharmacist – Jacqui Hagidimitriou
One of the most common problems that I am asked to help with in my consultations, is the impact that stress has on our day to day lives. Stress can be defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances. Or more simply put, stress is pressure placed upon us in either a physical or psychological way. It is vital that our body and mind can adapt to stress from our environment, otherwise we will crumble under the pressure. Too often in our modern-day world, stress comes in the form of mental, rather than physical pressures. Are you always running to appointments, eating on the go (opting for fast meals that keep hunger at bay, but do little to nourish your body), feeling like your heart is always racing… Knowing your mind is always racing or getting impatient on your drive in traffic and getting angry at little things? These can all be signs of leading a life where stress is getting the better of you! What does this do to our body and mind? It keeps us in a state of fight or flight. The inbuilt way that we are designed to respond to a physical threat, that gets us out of danger. Picture this – a gigantic beast suddenly appears in your office, growling and bearing their teeth (and no, I’m not talking about your boss) What will you do? You will do one of two things. Either weigh up your options for tackling the beast and surviving, or scan the room for exits to be able to flee! You will do this automatically, by your brain switching on your sympathetic nervous system. This nervous system is not as kind as it sounds. It doesn’t make you a cup of tea and listen to your stories, it makes you
release a stress chemical - adrenaline - into your bloodstream. This causes your heart to beat harder and faster, your pupils dilate to take in all the details of the approaching threat and your muscles and liver release sugar into your bloodstream. This ensures that you can run, fight and use the strength you need to escape the situation. Sounds great, right? If you were outsmarting the office beast, then yes. However, what if the threat is work deadlines, relationship strains and financial burdens. Those kind of pressures don’t just get defeated with the swipe of a mighty adrenaline fueled arm. They take time, planning and structure to defeat, reducing the pressure we feel on our body and mind. Long Term Stress The problem occurs when this stress response is almost unrelenting and continuous. When our body thinks these threats are the same as the physical threat and causes the same changes in our body chemistry as if we needed to run for our lives, it can cause us health problems in the long term. This stress response is supposed to be short-lived – to get us out of immediate danger. However, we are living lives that are filled with continual stress triggers. We need to find a way to slow our sympathetic nervous system down, so that our body and mind can have times where we are feeling safe, out of danger and relaxed. This is when we can repair and restore our body and mind and is crucial for our health and wellbeing. Cluttered environment = cluttered mind
Whether you believe one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, are a passionate up-cycler or subscribe to Marie Kondo’s life changing art of tidying up – there will be something for everyone at Pine Rivers Private Hospital’s upcoming Rummage Sale. The sale, to be held on the 12th October, forms part of Mental Health Week and aims to raise awareness of the therapeutic benefits of de-cluttering - as well as bagging a bargain. “De-cluttering enables one to let go of past items no longer needed or helpful to keep, and no longer holding on to things that may or may not be relevant to a future not yet lived,” said Julie Huntington, Allied Health Manager. “At Pine Rivers Private Hospital we teach techniques in Mindfulness and a mindful focus is a present focus, therefore de-cluttering involves re-assessing what is needed right now. “We should all ask the question, is it helpful to hold on to these items, or does doing so create pressure or distress in the current moment?” Pine Rivers staff have embraced the sale and have been donating items of clothing, small furniture and children’s toys. Community members can also donate items for the sale. All proceeds will be donated to a mental health charity.
“We would like to invite those from the community to come and support this event, have a free breakfast on us and hopefully pick up a few personal treasures to create their own memories,” said Robyn Carrington, Business Development Manager and Coordinator of the event. The rummage sale will open from 7:30am at Pine Rivers Private Hospital. For more information visit, Pine Rivers’ Facebook event page – Pine Rivers Private 2019 Mental Health Day.

Gentlemen! Have you had your ‘Man Check’ yet?
We often hear the saying ‘Life begins at 40’,but does it really for our male counterparts? Even from the age of 30, men will experience a steady drop in testosterone and will more than likely start noticing some physical and mental changes a decade or two after their testosterone levels begin to drop. Some of these changes are outlined below:Physical Changes Testosterone helps build muscle mass and improve bone mass and density. Therefore, men experiencing a drop in testosterone levels may notice a loss of muscle and even increased body fat. Many men will notice increased fatigue, decreased sex drive and sometimes hair loss. Mental Changes As with any hormonal changes, decreased testosterone levels can lead to mental and emotional shifts. Some men report experiencing depression and other mood disorders. Some may also experience a lack of mental clarity, irritability, and can find it harder to focus. “Unlike a woman going through menopause, testosterone in men will drop gradually over time. This means that the older a man is, the more likely he is to begin experiencing the above symptoms,” said Blaine Woods, Director of
TerryWhite Chemmart (TWCM) Keperra Compounding pharmacy. “Occasionally, men under the age of 30 will start experiencing some symptoms of low testosterone, which can be for a multitude of reasons. Tests are available to determine testosterone levels and there are treatments available.” Currently, one of our local pharmacies, TerryWhite Chemmart (TWCM) Keperra Compounding pharmacy are offering mens health checks that include; BMI, blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol checks, with the added option of testing your hormone levels. These tests can help men monitor their health and show indications of low testosterone levels. The TWCM Man Check is a standard health check with some additional questions and support material related to men’s health. The information offered is excellent and it is worth coming popping into the pharmacy just to get the brochure. So take care of your most important asset – your health and book in for a Men’s Health check at Keperra Compounding Pharmacy TODAY! Call 07 3355 3905 for more information.

GO2 Health at Everton Park Expands Coordinated Health Care for Veterans and the Community
GO2 Health is delighted welcome two new doctors, Dr Heidi McKenzie and Dr Jason Kovan-Boss, to the team. Dr Heidi McKenzie has recently relocated from the Sunshine Coast where she worked as a GP at Pelican Waters Family Doctors and Golden Beach Medical Centre. She has undertaken further training in the fields of veteran health, practice improvement, women’s health, child and adolescent health and mental health. Dr McKenzie also attends some surgical assisting at Greenslopes Private Hospital. She has had a longstanding engagement with the veteran community as her husband is a veteran. Dr McKenzie has been involved with a wide range of veteran organisations including Mates4Mates, 42 for 42 and Diggers Rest. “I am looking forward to working with a wide range of patients at GO2 Health including veterans where there is a focus on the whole person. The supplementary health services of physio, psychology, massage, acupuncture, exercise physiology, reformer Pilates, hydrotherapy and dietetics means we can get lasting results with a team approach,” said Dr McKenzie. Dr Kovan-Boss has recently sold his practice at Albany Creek. He has wide-ranging knowledge and experience having worked with adolescents during his time as a high school physics teacher and youth worker, he has also worked as a sexual health counsellor and life coach. As a doctor he has supported young couples through fertility challenges, assisted patients struggling with obesity, and
treated Veterans and rural patients at Gatton, Samford and Albany Creek. He has also developed strong relationships with DVA Advocates. “I particularly enjoy working with veterans and appreciate the sacrifices they have made in serving our country. Many of them have had a hard journey, but ultimately they want to be well. They just need that extra care to get back on track. With the benefit or being both a counsellor and a GP, I am a very accepting listener. In a confidential and safe way, I can help coach veterans back into living balanced and satisfying civilian lives,” said Dr Kovan-Boss. Mr Rod Martin, one of the co-owners of GO2 Health said the practice is undergoing expansion and is delighted to welcome Dr McKenzie and Dr Kovan-Boss. “The addition of new GPs and allied health team members ensures that we are able to continue to serve our patients the best possible way. The most important outcome is the patient experience. I am excited about the new additions to our team as they will bring additional experience and skills.” For more information, visit www.go2health.com.au or phone 3355 5540. Rest and Digest… Your Roadmap to a Healthier Gut
With Integrative Pharmacist – Jacqui Hagidimitriou
I recently spent a week away on a business trip to the beautiful Western Australia. Travel, for me, is always exciting, to see different towns, landscapes and experience local cuisine. Yet, while my mind is excited, my gut is often a little nervous… A little voice appears from my belly: “Will she feed me at the right time?” “Will she be able to move about normally?” “Will she even be able to access a nice toilet when necessary?” Now, this gut sounds super fussy, but I’m sure some of you can relate! It is a common problem for many that changes to not just the diet, but also sleep patterns and movement can cause havoc for our tantrummy tummies! This is because digestion is as much about our nervous system and the environment surrounding our eating pattern, as it is about our food choices. In the last edition of the Hills Echo, I talked about the fight or flight mechanism of stress. Opposite to that is our ability to rest and digest. Often in our fast-paced lives we eat without thinking and quickly go to our next task. However, the food we have consumed has a much longer journey ahead. What we do throughout the day can impact on whether this food has a nice uneventful journey through our digestive tract, or whether it will cause, let’s say, some turbulence along the way. Our body will place digestion lower on the priority list when we are under stress and this can impact on the speed
www.hillsecho.com
and smoothness of the movement of the intestines, which slowly move food through its long tubes, to extract as much nutrients as possible. It’s no coincidence that the call to evacuate the transportation line at the end of the gut occurs more strongly after eating a meal. This is called the post-prandial reflex and if obeyed, helps ensure there is enough room on board for all “passengers” as the next lot of food comes through. Like a cheeky child, our gut may go silent for a while if its signals are ignored, but as all parents know, if there’s silence for too long, there’s trouble brewing. So, keeping your gut happy, keeps you happy so listen to its cues, even when on holiday! To learn more from Jacqui about digestion and stress, you can join her 7pm on the 27th November at The Clinic Hub for a fun, interactive evening “Treat Yourself to a Stress-Less Christmas”. Phone 3289 1559 for more details!

Bringing JOY to the community
We have all heard that regular exercise has many benefits. It can assist in preventing many age-related changes to muscles, bones and joints. Exercise can even help in reversing changes that may have already occurred, such as increasing bone density. With this in mind, local business owner Miranda Pardon of Enhance PT has launched a new exercise class called ‘JOY’ - a low to moderate class for ‘Just Older Youth.’ The JOY class is designed specifically for people who are 55 and above and focuses on increasing balance, strength and flexibility as well as improving general fitness levels. Miranda is extremely passionate about keeping the older population moving freely, living stronger and living independently for as long as possible. “I’ve always had a lot of older friends in my life, which is one of the main reasons I became a personal trainer,” explained Miranda. “The beauty of the JOY class is that it is a safe, social and fun exercise class. Plus, you won’t find yourself having to do burpees or drop to the ground and carry out 50 push ups here!” However, did you know that there are equally important social benefits that exercise can bring to your life, as Miranda has discovered. Since starting the JOY classes, she has noticed that, not only are the classes extremely popular, but they have had a positive social affect on many of her clients. “Some of our clients have reconnected with friends they haven’t seen for a decade, whilst others have formed
ONLY ONLY
new friendships and bonds. We seem to have formed a ‘community’ within the community, where we all check on one another. For example, if someone is missing from class we will text or phone to check if they are okay or need help,” said Miranda. So if you’re looking for a safe and enjoyable exercise class surrounded by supportive and friendly locals, why not head along and join the JOY? It is never to late to start your fitness journey and people of all fitness levels are welcomed. JOY classes run every Wednesday at the All Saints Church Hall, 86 Cobbity Crescent Arana Hills (across the road from the Arana Hills Library). For further details visit: enhancept.com.au or call Miranda on 0434 401 750.

Peripheral neuropathy (PN) refers technically to any condition arising from nerve damage in the limbs and extremities, but the term is mostly used in relation to generalised nerve damage, rather than disorders which affect only single nerves. PN has varying causes and symptoms including numbness, pain, burning and tingling. In some patients, it causes very distressing restless legs. Although common, PN can be difficult to diagnose clinically, as the symptoms can be both invisible and subjective – as always, there is no objective way to quantify or compare pain-levels between patients. For example, severe pain experienced by one person may be perceived and described as discomfort by another. Similarly, different patients can describe apparently similar symptoms of PN as either “burning” or “tingling”. Furthermore, PN can mimic other conditions and can be silent, making it easy to miss, or leading to an incorrect diagnosis without objective evidence. Luckily, neurophysiology testing can help... Nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) provide a clear, objective, quantified measurement of nerve function – effectively making PN “visible”. For example, a patient of ours with Type 2 Diabetes recently complained of pins & needles in their toes. Although this is a typical complication of diabetes, the GP referred the patient for NCS as a precaution. Unexpectedly, the results indicated severe PN, which led to a diagnosis of kidney failure. The patient was subsequently referred for life-saving dialysis. Objectively documenting the function of peripheral nerves (especially in cases where the symptoms are subjective) is vital - even when the diagnosis appears “obvious”. Corbett Neurophysiology Services (CNS) routinely bulkbills NCS and EMG testing in Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast. Waiting times for appointments are currently only a few weeks. Results are explained immediately by our consultant Neurologists and a comprehensive report is sent to your referring Doctor within 24 hours. For more information, visit www.corbett.com.au or phone 07 5503 2499. Don’t stay in invisible pain any longer - ask your GP for a referral for NCS today.
