2020/21 Budget to enhance greenspaces and improve local roads
The annual 2020/2021 budget for Moreton Bay Regional Council was delivered on the 26th June with recovery, jobs and environment being key themes of this years budget.
Many residents will welcome all the park improvements, sports facility upgrades and roads renewal programs being rolled out this year with $9.6 million allocated to getting Division 10 back on track post-COVID. Just a few items for improvement include; • James Drysdale Reserve - investment into a new fit for purpose community building. • Pine Hills Park - Will receive a new playground, new exercise equipment, and a new carpark to improve safety and ease of access. • Leslie Patrick Park - Installation of an outdoor chess set and ping-pong tables, a garden, further greenspace enhancements and a new space designed for badminton and volleyball. An exciting announcement from council is that supporting jobs locally is of top priority through their 'Local Preference' policy. This policy aims to allocate as many council contracts as possible to local firms. In addition to the funding for parks and recreation, the Council has also committed to a raft of transport infrastructure upgrades and renewals that will ensure the safe travel of Division 10 residents. ‘Part of Council’s core business is to provide safe and reliable local roads, so I’m pleased to see $5.4 million allocated to road
safety improvements to help residents get to work, school, and home to their families safer and sooner than before,” said Councillor Matt Constance. Some of these projects include the rehabilitation of Patricks Road in Ferny Hills, the repair and renewal of the Matthew Hawthorne Reserve boardwalk and detailed design works for the Plucks/Minto pedestrian connector. Here are just a few of the Division 10 Budget Highlights: • $2.1 million for Road resurfacing across Division 10 • $500,000 towards an upgrade of the intersection of Gordon Road and Ferry Way • $415,000 towards the upgrade of the concourse and slide access at the Albany Creek Leisure Centre • $400,000 for Pine Hills Park Upgrade • $160,000 for construction of Town Green at Leslie Patrick Park • $150,000 towards an upgrade of the intersection of South Pine Road and Plucks Road • $138,000 for the pedestrian Bridge renewal at the Matthew Hawthorne Reserve • $100,000 for new pathway construction on Alstonia Street • $100,000 for renewal of fauna fencing of the underpass at Collins Road • $85,000 for the installation of fitness equipment at Bert Hall Park • $53,000 for Bus shelter upgrade on Tarnook Drive • $50,000 to commence early planning and community consultation for Hills District Civic Facility at Dawson Parade

Rain rain go away, come again when it's not game day!
Saturday 18th July saw the start of Arana Netball Club’s return to netball with the Downey Park Netball Association’s nine week blast.
Six Arana teams, from under 11's through to opens, took to the court for the first time this winter netball season. You would have been hard pressed to wipe the smiles from any of the faces of the players, parents and officials as they were all thrilled to be back at Downey Park. Easing of restrictions has allowed spectators in limited numbers to return courtside and cheer on the players. Spectators are all required to maintain physical distance and adhere to the entry and exit rules in place by Downey Park. Arana Netball Club parents and players were wonderful and set a fine example of what it means to be 'Covid Safe' when courtside. With eight games to go, the club was getting a little worried last Saturday as the rain clouds Mia Hawes, Arana 2 closed in. It wasn't enough to dampen their spirits though! Downey Park kept a keen eye on court safety and the players kept their eye on the goal posts. Although it is a short season, being back at netball has been wonderful for all involved; it has taken a lot of organisation in Nanette Bingham (0000957067) the background from club and association officials, and we at Arana Netball Netball Club Inc would like to thank all involved Autism-Anxiety-Depression-Stress-ID for getting us back out on court. It's so good to be back! Parenting-Relationships-Behaviours +

A stitch in time - Craft during COVID
If you started ‘crafting’ during lockdown and are on the lookout for more creative projects, look no further than The Nest Community in Everton Park. Here you can enjoy weekly low-cost sewing, ‘Learn to Crochet’ or Knit classes with the sustainable crafters.
The Nest Community is founded on the principles of ‘craftivism’ that celebrates the social benefits of making by hand, sharing skills and empowering through creativity. Since 2014, it has fulfilled its purpose of providing a safe and supportive environment for women of all ages to connect through craft. But, as a self-funded, not-for-profit community organisation, their future looked bleak when they had to temporarily close their doors during the March lockdown. Thanks to the support of local businesses and organisations - NOW Business Networking, Burson Auto Parts, Alderley Automative, Road Boss Rally Group, Black Bear Investments and Bunya Lions Club - they were able to open a shop front for their social enterprise, The Nest Haberdashery Thrift Shop, and continue to trade during the pandemic. The concept for the Haberdashery evolved organically over the years as people started bringing in their excess craft supplies to support low-cost workshops. ‘When I first started teaching craft workshops I had to buy new materials to run them, which went against my sustainability ethos and also prevented me from offering them at the low-cost scale we do now,’ says Nest Community CEO and Co-Founder, Ms Roz Fenson. Gradually, The Nest Community started to receive donations from deceased estates or makers wanting to clear out their stash – people who wanted to recycle rather than dump craft supplies in landfill. As donations have increased, so too has The Nest Community’s sustainability impact. All of their craft workshops and range of handmade products are resourced using diverted materials, plus they distribute diverted craft supplies to over 20 other charities around Brisbane. Even though it was only open 12 hours a week, the Haberdashery became the community’s primary income source in recent years. However, the Haberdashery didn’t have a permanent home and it was very time consuming for volunteers to move and unpack the stock each day. ‘We made plans to create a more permanent set-up under the house, but needed the support of local businesses to bring plans to fruition,’ reveals Ms Fenson. The Nest Haberdashery Thrift Shop was open for trading in January 2020 and sales were already doing well. And then COVID-19 hit. Ms Fenson says, ‘Just when we were on a roll with longer opening hours, we suddenly had to close our doors until we could work out how our customers could shop and stay safe. We really didn’t know how it would affect demand.’ Fortunately, demand for yarn (wool and knitting supplies) increased dramatically as people looked for off-line activities
Members at a rug-making workshop before Covid. Rug workshops are now running on the last weekend of each month
to fill in their time. But it hasn’t just been people looking for a crafty pasttime, some customers have been turning craft into a business. ‘One young woman, who had lost her job in hospitality, came into the Haberdashery and bought all of our upholstery fabric – which sells for around 75% less than recommended retail. She started making pot plant holders to earn a living and along the way, she has created a product that is made from materials that otherwise would have gone into landfill. She’s going really well!,’ says Ms Fenson. With Queensland now opening up and restrictions easing, The Nest Community have recently announced that their popular craft workshops are back. As a way of giving back to the community for the support in recent months, and to support people in their newfound craft endeavours, they have introduced two weekly low-cost classes. The low-cost Learn To Sew workshops are held every Saturday 10am – 12pm and will teach beginners the basics of threading, adjusting and maintaining a sewing machine. If you attend on a weekly basis, you will be able to progressively acquire new skills with different projects, like making a produce bag or a patchwork cushion cover. If yarn is more your game, buy a ball of wool and some needles or a hook from the Nest Haberdashery and their master crafters will guide you through the start-up phase every Saturday with Learn to Crochet and Knit workshops from 2-4pm. All of the Nest Community workshops are facilitated by volunteers with a passion to share their knowledge and are structured to encourage intergenerational social connection to build confidence and resilience. Many of their workshops are inspired by sustainable handmade living and include rag rug making, shibori tie-dying, Mexican embroidery, bento bag making and kokedama. Workshop places are limited, so bookings are essential. For more information, go to www.nestcommunity.org.au and sign up to their newsletter or follow them on social media to snap up a thrift shop treasure. The Nest Haberdashery Thrift Shop is open Wednesday to Friday 10am – 1pm and Saturdays 10am – 4pm.

A lifetime of Taming local Tresses
Meet Maree Madders of Ferny Hills. She may be familiar to many local ladies out there who have called upon her services in order to tame their tresses over the years!
Maree has managed to notch up a massive 50 years in the hairdressing profession, with the majority of that time having been spent working in the local area. Maree started out her apprenticeship at the young age of 15 in Maryborough, before moving to Brisbane in 1974. Here, she started working in the Chermside area. By the mid 80‘s, she had begun leaving her mark on a salon on Patrick’s Road, Ferny Hills. Finally, a local salon in Arana Hills was lucky enough to become her workplace in the early 90’s. It wasn’t until 1998 that Maree ventured out with two colleagues and established a new salon called True Colours on Samford Maree doing what she loves! Road, Ferny Grove. For over 30 years now, Maree has savoured the sweet taste of being a true local in Ferny Hills, with her love for the area and its community brushing off on her work. So, you may be wondering, is retirement on the horizon for Maree? Of course not! ‘I love the connection I have with the clientele,’ an enthusiastic Maree tells. ‘I get great enjoyment out of what I do, and it is extremely satisfying. I will keep going as I loathe to leave it.’
Tid Bits AUGUST 2020
from the Arana Hills & Districts Senior Citizens Club Inc The Hills Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills
Unfortunately, as with a lot of other organisations, our club has ceased meeting since the onset of the coronavirus due to many of our members being in the age group susceptible to catching the virus. Our committee met on the 16th July to review the situation and it was decided that the committee meets once a month (on the 3rd Thursday) to assess the current changes. So our next Committee meeting will be on the 20th August. One of the difficulties we will face is the social distancing, which I feel will be with us for a while. Also, the amount of preparation needed before and after any meeting to comply with Government directives is quite considerable! In the mean time, be careful and stay healthy. We wish a speedy recovery to all of our sick members. Please give us a call if you need any further information. Till next time, Mike 0406 601 589

Homemade Remedies for the Garden from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
It’s only a few weeks until Spring - 1st September of the calendar month.
Already some shrubs and roses are producing new growth and the weeds are going crazy! Keep a watch out for Bindi seedlings in the lawn and remove them before the prickles in the centre begin to develop. Many years ago, a guest speaker gave members of this club some recipes for making remedies for garden problems. Here are some of them you might like to try. All purpose insecticide to eradicate caterpillars, beetles, mites and other insects. Roughly chop up 4 onions, 4 red chillies and 2 cloves. Add half a cup of Lux flakes or grated pure soap. Cover this with water and leave to steep for 24 hours. Strain off the liquid which is a concentrate, then dilute with 5 litres of water to make a spray to cover your plants. Use within 2-3 weeks as it will not keep. The strained residue can be put on the compost heap. A spray for Scale, Aphids and Mealy Bugs Mix well (use the electric mixer if required) 2 cups of Vegetable Oil and half cup of dishwashing detergent. Dilute 1 tablespoon of this with a litre of water and spray to get rid of Scale, Aphids and Mealy Bugs. Fungicide for Powdery Mildew Mix 1 part full cream to 10 parts of water then spray leaves of affected plants. This mixture cannot be stored so just mix enough for requirements. Snail Repellent Spread used coffee grounds or fine sawdust on the ground around plants as snails can’t glide over this type of surface. The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club is making arrangements to resume monthly meetings on Thursday 3rd September at the Enoggera Memorial Hall on Trundle Street. Should anything occur to prevent this, the President will contact members. Potential visitors should phone 3356 1256. A guest speaker, Barbara Beerling, has been engaged and she will talk about tropical diseases and pests in the garden. Barbara, who is a qualified Horticulturist, holds the position of President of Sub Tropical Fruit Club and Brisbane Co-ordinator for Heritage Roses in Australia. For 11 years she worked at Pevetta Museum and then for another 9 years at Nova Gardens at The Gap. She was also a professional Rose Pruner for 30 years, looking after private gardens. The meeting commences after morning tea, which is served at 9.45am. Visitors and new members are welcome, the hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. While every precaution will be taken to comply with COVID-19 instructions at our meeting, it is suggested that those attending the meeting bring their own pen, cup and saucer to avoid delays. For more information please call 3356 1256. Page 10 - August 2020, The Hills Echo

holding out hope that we will still be able to have a 50th anniversary celebration of some sort and of being able to sing Christmas carols at selected venues. Though 2020 has not panned out as expected, the choir has risen to the challenge – publishing a weekly email newsletter for members that contains links to various on-line performances, articles and activities, news and jokes; updating the choir history pages and rehearsal tracks on the choir’s website, and holding fortnightly Zoom rehearsals (which take a bit of ingenuity and patience to say the least). TAX MATTERS from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
It is that time of year when everyone is thinking about tax - sad but true. This year will potentially be very different for many because of COVID-19. Many will be receiving Government benefits for the first time and many may be working from home. With the evolution of myGov we are seeing a lot of data flowing directly from your employer, health fund and other sources. If you are a wage and salary earner, the ATO is warning against rushing into filing your tax return in case your employer has not yet finalised their single touch payroll obligations. If you are in business, you may be receiving Jobkeeper and/or may have received the Cashflow boost as well. Now it is important than ever to seek professional advice and assistance in completing your returns. Also, as we move into uncertain times, if you are in business it is more important than ever to be across your figures, controlling and monitoring cashflow and keeping an eye on the bottom line. If you are finding it difficult to meet your ATO obligations, it is essential that you communicate with the ATO; if you are a client of ours, we can communicate for you. If you are concerned about leaving home to see your accountant, they - like us here at TaxArana should have the ability for you to email or upload your documents so we can complete your return for you.

Salute to a Fallen Soldier
Wa l t e r G o r d o n Wallace was a WW2 ‘Rat of Tobruk’ and Pacific War veteran. He was a good friend of mine. I went around to his house on a regular basis, to hear his wisdom and war stories. Some of these included dodging bullets from a BF109 German plane and leading Prisoners Walter Gordon Wallace with Lincoln Whitehead, holding a plaque dedicated to of War across the Egyptian desert. In the his army battalion during the war Pacific, his stories consisted of a beached Japanese submarine dumping rice onto the shores in the dead of night, witnessing a posthumous American Medal of Honour action as well as talking about the jungle in New Guinea. He lived in suburban Keperra along with his lovely wife. He was a man built tough, with previous history working on railways in the heat. If you shook his hand, he would have a stern grip with strength. He was a true-blue Australian and the type of friend you’d want by your side. He lived through the defining ages of last century, witnessing humanity at its best yet worst. Gordon, you were a great friend - good to anyone, kind and compassionate - who deserves peace. You were truly apart of the Greatest Generation. Thank you for the stories. Your good friend, Lincoln Whitehead

A Horse-Drawn Tram Ride Through History!
Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed
Brisbane - this was our tram 135 years ago!
The first horse-drawn tram commenced service in Brisbane on the 10th August, 1885, and was ran by the Metropolitan Tramway and Investment (MT&I) Company limited from 1883 TO 1895. Here is a brief snapshot of the timeline of the Horse Tramway. 1883 – Only 24 years after Queensland was established, the MT&I Company was formed and immediately placed a proposal before the Brisbane Municipal Council for a tramway system. 1884 – Council accepted the company’s plan and, very soon after construction, it began in earnest. 1885 – 10th August was the official opening of the first tramway route from the Victoria Bridge to the Valley and out to Breakfast Creek Bridge, with lines branching to New Farm and to the Exhibition building in Gregory Terrace. Other routes were opened from the Woolloongabba Fiveways to the south side of Victoria Bridge. The tramline was finally put across the Victoria Bridge the following year, and this led to more extensions to West End and from Breakfast Creek line to Bulimba Ferry terminus at Newstead. The initial fleet of 18 horse-drawn cars was supplied by two USA companies, Brill and Stevenson. These cars were either single deck or double deck with the latter being opentopped. Early experience with these open-topped cars led to the company issuing warnings to its drivers not to raise the whip too high as the passengers on the top deck could just as easily become victims! One year after the tramway opened, the system was operating 39 cars and 370 horses on 19¼ route miles and carrying 54,000 passengers each week. By the early 1890’s, the company was carrying 1 million passengers each year but was in financial trouble with the 1890 depression and the high cost of running the tramway. In 1895, the company was finally sold to a group of Londonbased investors which formed the Brisbane Tramway Limited. There will be a special commemoration on Sunday 9th August at the Brisbane Tramway Museum from 11am to 4pm, with unlimited rides on our 100-year-old trams, static displays of the latest BCC bus and a vintage BCC bus, joy rides in a vintage BCC bus, and special events including the inaugural tram pulling competition between local teams! Ashgrove The Gap Rotary Club will also serve a sausage sizzle!! Fares: Adult— $15, Concession - $12, Children - $8 and a Family Pass - $46. No bookings are required, so pop down and join the fun at 50 Tramway Street, Ferny Grove The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by the Brisbane City Council.

Defibrillator donation to Picabeen Community
Mitchelton Rotary Club has seen many challenges in its 50 years of community service, but none more confronting than the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic.
Throughout lockdown and restrictions, the club has continued to support our struggling local organisations with financial donations toward their ongoing work in the community. The Club has been successful in securing a Rotary District Grant in March for a defibrillator for the Picabeen Community Centre. President at the time, Sandy Maguire, made contact with the Mitchelton Ambulance Station to co-ordinate a training session on how to use the machine as part of the Presentation to the Centre. They were finally able to turn this into a reality with the presentation of the defibrillator to the Picabeen Community Centre on the 21st July 2020. Dean Parham, Mitchelton Rotary Club President, presented the machine to Martin Turrell, President of Picabeen, and Martin responded with a warming speech of thanks for the donation and recognised the important work that local community organisations have done, during and after Covid-19. Following the presentation, Mitchelton Ambulance Station Officers, Michael Dorman and Eugene O’Mara, gave a demonstration on how the defibrillator works, where the best location for the equipment would be and the importance of
Women of Rotary; Denise Burcher, Karen Sinnamon and Lesley Woodroffe
a defibrillator in saving lives. Picabeen Community Centre Manager, Jillian Warren, and Mitchelton Rotary President, Dean Parham, gave a theatrical demonstration of how to use the defibrillator with guidance from paramedics. All staff, volunteers, students and Rotary Club members were encouraged to get involved and understand how to use the equipment. After the formalities of the presentation, Picabeen hosted a lovely morning tea in the outdoor garden and they had an opportunity to meet some of the volunteers from the Centre and speak with the paramedics about the defibrillator.

Kirsten was commissioned to create this beautiful mural (pictured above) for the school in honour of our Anzacs. Her brief was to represent a traditional Anzac figure - a woman - and also incorporate an indigenous element, which is illustrated in the piece in the form of a Southern Cross. The school received a grant from the local School Community fund for the construction of their own Anzac Memorial Garden. Works included a mural, a new seating area, flags and greenery around the artwork. You may think that mural artistry is glamorous, Kirsten with the Anzac mural at Everton Park State High School but Kirsten battled out the wind, cold and uneven terrain on ladders to create this colossal artwork that sizes up at 7.2m across by 3m high! However, armed with words of encouragement of students and locals, she took it all in her stride! ‘Although there were a few horrible days for working outside, a serviceman walked passed and he was really impressed. Lots of really nice kids said encouraging things too, which was wonderful!’ explains Kirsten. This talented artist is no stranger to brightening up schools. She is a artist in residence at Patricks Road State School (PRSS), Ferny Hills and, over the years, has steadily been creating colourful artworks and murals at the school for all to enjoy. What were dull grey bessa block walls at the school now sport memorizing aqua scapes of whales (that we are told may be complete with sound of whales soon!) and mundane downpipes now represent the legs of a Flamingo, to name just a few of the Grey bessa blocks are now stunning murals she has created there. aquascapes! ‘My first mural at PRSS was actually back in 2005. My first child started school there (I was just a artistic parent back then) and the walls were just boring grey bricks. I thought to myself, lets do something about that and created my first mural there. I have been painting murals at the school and elsewhere since. It’s been a long relationship - around 11 murals to date,’ said Kirsten. Saturday Playgroup at MPC
Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC) has two very shady playgrounds with many natural spaces to explore. The centre welcomes families with 0 to 5 year old children into the community to come and play. Although Playgroup ground to a halt in Term 2, the gates will be open every second Saturday in Term 3. Many families use this time as an opportunity for their child to become familiar with the kindy environment so it is open to all and not restricted to families intending to enrol at MPC. The cost is $12 for a first ‘come and try’ session then $50 for 5 sessions thereafter. MPC Playgroup offers a stimulating, safe, friendly environment for families to come together to play and build relationships. The lovely Jo, an educator who wears many hats at kindy, is there to welcome and interact both with children and parents. These are very relaxed occasions in which parents can use the beautiful playgrounds to engage and explore with their children. Some children bundle in very eagerly to take a look and get into playing while other families take their time to have a quiet wander by themselves, quietly taking in the surroundings and chatting together about what they see. Children build their selfconfidence through learning to talk with different children of various ages, as well as adults, and begin to feel a part of a little group. Playgroup parents and grandparents also build connections and enjoy their time in this relaxed, safe environment to socialise. Jo supports children as they explore, and encourages play possibilities. Some parents have had lightbulb moments as they hear the positive way Jo listens and responds to children. A set of grandparents commented on the changes they have seen in their grandchild’s confidence around new people: ‘He doesn’t hide anymore.’ They have attributed this new behaviour to practising talking to Jo and other new people at Playgroup. Playgroup will begin again on July 18th. Please email admin@mpc.net.au so we can be ready to welcome you.

A Giant Kookaburra Flew Into The Hills!
On Tuesday 21st July students and teachers at Patricks Road State School enjoyed a visit from a giant kookaburra.
This massive kookaburra was constructed by Dr Farvardin Daliri from Townsville. He usually splits his time between Brisbane and Townsville but has been stuck in Brisbane due to the Coronavirus lockdown. Whilst here, he set to work in perfecting his most impressive masterpiece yet! Initially, the giant bird was destined as a mascot for Townsville’s cultural festival. However, with uncertainty as to whether the festival would take place (due to the Coronavirus restrictions), Dr Daliri continued on with his project in order to bring a beacon of hope to communities throughout Australia. ‘At this point in time, the communities need laughter and joy, more harmony and optimism, and I thought this piece of art would captivate people’s imagination and get them laughing,’ Dr Daliri explains. Construction of the giant kookaburra was no small feat as the sculpture is The giant kookaburra on the Patricks Road State colossal! It measures School oval. A prime fossicking location - The Tweed River The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club is now up and running again after a three month closure due to the Coronavirus restrictions. Social distancing is still an issue, so numbers are restricted in our workshop and clubroom areas. Workshop times on a Thursday are from 9a.m. to noon for cutting and polishing of material and from noon to 3p.m. for Silversmithing. Our areas have sanitising stations set up which members must adhere to. Field trips this year have been limited, but we are always open to suggestions from our members of where to go. The major problem is fields closer to Brisbane (that we can do in a day trip) are closed to fossicking or are completely dug out. This is why we have to travel to outlying areas such as Chinchilla, Tweed River Valley, and Central Queensland Gemfields to collect material to cut and polish. Chinchilla has two Fossicking Reserves where you can fossick for Petrified Wood and Fern. The Visitor Information Centre in Chinchilla has all the details. The Tweed River Valley mainly produces Agate, Chalcedony and Jasper. Most of the gravel beds are accessed through private property, so it important to obtain the landholders permission before entering properties to search the gravel beds. However, there is a need for a large flood in the rivers and creeks to find material in this area. It is the floods which turn the gravel beds over and expose material which may have been buried for years and years. As soon as the waters recede from a flood, many rock hounds visit the area to search for Agate & Chalcedony. It also depends on the rate of rise during these floods which can affect how the gravel beds are turned over. A steady rise of the river or creek may not have enough force to churn over the gravel and expose Agates and Chalcedony, whereas a sharp sudden rise is what is required to really churn the gravel bed over. What is the difference between Agate and Chalcedony, people ask? They are both basically the same material, but Agate has lines and patterns, whereas Chalcedony has no lines or patterns. The Agate and Chalcedony of the Tweed River Valley is generally clear material with occasional white or moss inclusions. It does not have the colours which the North Queensland Agate from Agate Creek possesses. Antarctic Adventurer Reaches Century Milestone
Mr John Russell with Brenda Wells and Tahnee McBride of Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD
Long time Just Better Care Brisbane North client, Mr John Russell, has led a life filled with more adventures than most of us could possibly imagine. So much so that not long before his 100th year he co-wrote a book about just some of his journeys. British born John first called Australia home as a young man whilst studying engineering at university and then enlisting in the Australian Military Forces (now the Australian Defense Force) at a time when it was common to claim to be older in order to meet the enlistment requirements. Being the holder of a driver’s license saw him placed into a driver’s role. John’s army stories are abound and bring a twinkle to his eye. His adventures include traveling through the Northern
Territory en-route to Darwin, transporting trucks on the railway until the line ran out and then being stranded due to washed out roads and bridges. Rations ran out and bushman skills were quickly needed in order for the men to survive. Then Typhoid struck John cutting short his Army career. Nevertheless, John soon found the seas and became a crew member on the first ship to enter Pearl Harbour after the infamous bombing in 1941. He also recalls fondly his time on the RMS Aquitania, previously a passenger ship pressed into service as a troop carrier for the war effort. After the war, John’s engineering skills led him to many interesting jobs. Possibly the most notable being four trips to the Antarctic, with Australian and US expeditions. During his winter trips, he was part of the small group of men that set up Mawson Station, Australia’s oldest permanent research station and the oldest continuously inhabited Antarctic station south of the Antarctic Circle. At the age of 99, John published his Antarctic stories in a book, Antarctic Engineer, co-written by Dale Lorna Jacobsen. John leads an amazingly independent life in his longtime marital home, with just some small adjustments due to the recent Covid-19 crisis. June 18 saw John celebrate his 100th birthday. We wish him many, many happy returns and offer thanks for his service to Australia. The Older Women’s Network Qld (OWNQ) Mitchelton Branch is restarting their monthly meetings. The important start date is Wednesday 26th August 2020.
Their down time was not ‘down time’ as they began Zoom meetings on a regular basis. In July they had a guest speaker address how to handle mental health. The Zoom meetings and ‘Morning Tea in the Park’ filled the gaps of the normal activities and now they are looking forward to a ‘new’ normal. Currently, they are back with our regular activities, COVID permitting. Megan Collier from Home Instead Senior Care is their guest speaker and will be discussing how they can help to navigate the My Aged Care process. It is important to be informed about the important issue of obtaining assistance in getting in home care, a service that is provided by Home Instead. The Mitchelton Branch of OWNQ meeting venue and times: • Church of Christ Community Centre, Wattle Room, 28 Blaker Road, Mitchelton 4053 • Monthly Meeting is on the 4th Wednesday of the month, commencing at 10am to 12pm, with a small cost of $5. All women are welcome. For more information about Mitchelton OWNQ ring Judith on 0431 159 921

Out and About with the Golden Valley Keperra Lions By Paul Ryan
If some of our readers are my age, your will remember the 1961 Solvol Soap television advertisement: ‘Wash your hands Geoffrey.’ Well, Geoffrey had dirty hands and it was obvious that he needed to wash them. However, in this pandemic ,you cannot see the germs, even if your hands look clean. We h a v e s e e n many irresponsible people ignoring the health warnings. Now further outbreaks in Victoria and New South Wales show how resilient this virus is. Australia is a great place but we do have a ‘It won’t happen to me’ attitude. However, I urge you, for your family’s sake, for your friends sake, for your co-workers sake, and for Australia’s sake - ‘Wash your hands Geoffrey!’ Although medical researchers around the world are working tirelessly to find a cure, COVID-19 will be with us until a vaccine is produced, so please also remember to; • Maintain a Social Distance • Wear a Mask when distancing is not possible • Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth unnecessarily • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze • Stay at home if you feel unwell and seek medical attention The Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club continues to Recycle for Research. We collect cans, plastic bottles, and glass bottles for delivery to ‘Containers for Change’. You would be amazed how those 10 cents add up and every cent raised goes directly to Lions Medical Research Foundation without administration fees being deducted. We deposit around 2,500 cans for recycling every few months and I know this is only the tip of the iceberg. If you want to make a difference and collect containers for Medical Research, let us know when you have a pile and we will happily collect them from your home or business. Your recycling can make a real difference! To get in touch with us, call me, Paul Ryan, on 0409 688 675, email gvk@lionsq3.org.au or visit our website https:// goldenvalleykeperra.qld.lions.org.au/contact

The Hills Players Costumes Galore!
By Margie Reid (Longest serving member & resident costume maker)
Members of The Hills Players have started meeting again at St Matthews Church Hall in Church Road after several months in limbo during the pandemic.
Things are by no means settled and we are still uncertain about how to move ahead. We would like to have a celebration for our 40th Year but time will tell for this, so keep reading our articles in The Hills Echo and you'll see when we have something planned! In the meantime, the cast members of ‘Always a Bridesmaid’ have decided to meet again and start slowly by re-reading the script and learning lines while still social distancing. We have also collected quite a few of the costumes and alot of props for when we can stage this very funny play set in the Southern States of America. This reminds me of all the costumes I have had to create over the years. Some of the more unusual of these have been a lobster costume (for myself!) as I am the only one silly enough to wear a foam rubber lobster costume over red tights! There has also been a red crushed velvet cat, a two person horse, a cassowary, and a brown cow. We have had several clergymen in various forms, several nuns, pirates, sailors and even witches. Life is never dull when you belong to a theatre company, and particularly when you can sew. For our next production, we have several brides and bridesmaids. Thank goodness most of these costumes have been purchased, but acquiring bouquets, flower arrangements and headpieces without blowing the budget is a mighty task. Local Kindy spreads joy in the community
Although COVID-19 restrictions are gradually easing, the current advice for those aged over 70, or aged over 60 with a pre-existing health condition, is still to stay home unless for essential purposes. Many aged care facilities have closed their doors or implemented restrictions on visitors to protect the health and safety of their residents. To help ease the loneliness experienced by many people during self-isolation, St John Qld started collecting children’s drawings and letters to distribute to aged care facilities, as well as people who live alone in the wider community. For the past few months, the children from a Kindy class at Camelia Avenue Child Care Centre in Everton Hills have regularly sent in their artworks and well-wishes for St John Qld staff to deliver. ‘We’ve had so much positive feedback from the residents in aged care facilities, and other isolated people, who have received these drawings and letters,’ said Julie
Your Local
Norquay, General Manager of Community & Volunteer Services at St John Qld. ‘It has put a smile on a lot of faces. A drawing or a letter can really lift a person’s spirits and bring so much joy. Some of the people that have received them have even written back to the children. It’s a wonderful way for younger and older generations to connect,’ she said. Maisie Clark has given her A selection of the pictures drawing from Camelia Avenue created by the kids at Child Care pride of place. Camelia Avenue Childcare ‘I put the drawing up on my wall and look at it every day. It helps me feel less lonely,’ she said.

Meet the candidates in the next state election
Local Candidates for the QLD state election will have their say at a ‘Meet the Candidates Forum’, hosted by The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce Inc and MC’d by local media icon Ian Skippen.
The event will take place at The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting on the 22nd of September at the Arana Leagues Club, 247 Dawson Parade, Keperra starting at 7am. With the state election taking place on Sat 31st October 2020, your local Chamber is well advanced in the Forum planning. The morning also represents a great networking opportunity, with the chance to get to know your local Chamber of Commerce and local business community members. All attendees are strongly encouraged to register their attendance via the Chamber website www.hillschamber.org.au The event will be conducted under Covid19 compliant conditions with regard to space and food service. COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, How do I handle this situation with my daughter? Caroline has two children - one three years old and the other a baby of eleven months. Not long ago, Caroline invited me around for dinner. After dinner, she suggested that we make up the family photo board and we get Samatha to help us. What I thought would be fun was really horrible as it quickly became evident to me that I was being set up, and the message behind this fun activity was that Clives’ (her husband) family was more important than her own. There must have been forty photos of memorable family events over the last five years and I figured in just two of them her sister not one. The rest were of her ‘preferred’ family and friends. Well, that was the message I was sure she was sending. I was speechless; I was so hurt and shocked that she could set out to so sneakily and deliberately hurt me in this way. Once out of there, I cried all the way home. What must she be feeling about me to want to do this? I am at a loss. I have tried my best to support her, particularly since her and Chrissy’s father died several years ago. She was the elder, always more independent with a ‘don’t help me, I can manage myself’. So much so, that in the past I have learnt to offer and not get offended when refused. There has always been a lot of sibling rivalry between my two daughters. Caroline is a great grudge holder and has a less funny disposition compared with Chrissy. In a recent falling out between them, I was accused of yet again taking sides with the younger sister. Briefly, Caroline was being very high-handed as the know it all mother of two, telling Chrissy what to do with her six month old who has just been diagnosed with silent reflux. Chrissy has needed a lot of support through this and I willing gave it. It seemed like I am being punished for this. Besides the hurt, I am now extremely angry with her behaviour and afraid of what I may say because of this. Fiona
years of learning and you could provide the model of how to achieve this. There is a heap of family dynamic issues here, but the priority is to address the last one. Broach the subject the next time you are able to see her one-on-one without the distraction of children. Remember it is our choice how we react to any situation. Start by saying how you felt – NOT how she made you feel, as that is blame and it will get you no where. Take responsibility for why you feel what you feel; i.e. ‘when we were doing the family photo board, I became terribly hurt because what I saw was 38 pictures of everyone in Clyde’s family, two of me, and none of your sister. It’s taken me courage to ask it but if you are able to tell me I would appreciate knowing what you were intending to do or tell me by acting in that way.’ Then listen, hear her hurt, anger or denial, whatever. Keep eye contact with her as much as possible and, without reactivity, reflect back to her in summary of verbatim what you have heard. Wait a few seconds to let her get that you got it and then add your comment. At this stage, focus on understanding her not on justifying your parenting. Remember, we have done the best we know how. It was all new and there was no step by step instruction manual telling us what to do. Caroline may be at a point in her life when she can start to recognise this also and be more forgiving of her less than perfect parent. If a discussion gets bogged down in blame and denial, suggest that because the relationship is so important to you, you think it might be wise for you to seek counselling together. Caroline might even be open to all three of you attending. It can be challenging and confronting, but in the long run, it is the easiest and more effective way of resolving complex family dynamics and establishing better relationships. Robin
Dear Fiona, You’re right - anger will not help resolve this situation. If you keep in mind that, if your daughter wanted to deliberately hurt you in this way, she must be hurting really badly herself. Rightly or wrongly, she blames you, her mother, for the pain she is feeling. Her behaviour shows she doesn’t know how to address this hurt truthfully in an adult way. That takes

‘There’s more to say after R U OK?’, is the message for R U OK? Day 2020 (on Thursday 10 September) and will focus on building confidence and increased skills for people so they know how to navigate a conversation with someone in their life who might be struggling. 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. RU OK has free resources that include a conversation guide to help people learn what to say after ‘Are you OK?’ and help break down any fears or concerns someone might be feeling when approaching a meaningful conversation with a family member or friend who might be doing it tough. This guide is also designed to help individuals, workplaces, schools and community groups plan for R U OK? Resources are free to download from their website at www.ruok.org.au This year R U OK?Day coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day which will further raise awareness of the scale of suicide globally and the role that each of us can play in prevention efforts.

Everton News from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER
Local residents don’t want to be afraid to use the roads or have hoons causing mayhem outside their homes. The LNP will put the brakes on Queensland’s hooning problem with new cameras, new laws and new technology which will literally shred the tyres of dangerous drivers. The LNP's plan includes: • 100 new covert CCTV cameras • Tyre-shredding road surfaces in burnout hotspots • Anti-hooning gang laws - a new offence to apply specifically to members of established hooning gangs. For more information visit DEB2020.com.au
It's 100 days to the upcoming State Election on October 31st, and it's important I communicate to you the vision of the alternative Government. Here are two of the LNP's latest policies... FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR SENIORS AND STUDENTS Seniors in the Everton electorate will be entitled to free off-peak travel on local trains if the LNP wins the next state election on October 31. Students starting full-time university and TAFE courses will also be able to apply for $500 vouchers to pay for bus or train fares. Congestion is having a big impact on the quality of life for people in the local community and this will save drivers time and save seniors and students money. PLAN TO GET HOONS OFF OUR STREETS Hoons need to get off our streets and we need to make our communities safe again.

Dickson News from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON
Supporting Small Businesses
There are a number of federal government initiatives available to support businesses as they move into the recovery phase of the coronavirus crisis. I’d particularly like to highlight the extension of the Coronavirus SME Guarantee Scheme which supports small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) to get access to the funding they need to adapt and innovate during the coronavirus crisis. Under the existing Scheme, the Government is providing an unprecedented level of support to SMEs in partnership with 44 approved lenders by guaranteeing 50 per cent of new unsecured loans to SMEs. The Scheme has already seen more than 15,600 businesses accept loans worth $1.5 billion. The next phase of the Coronavirus SME Guarantee Scheme will help businesses move out of hibernation, successfully adapt to the new COVID-safe economy and invest for the future. The expanded Scheme will allow businesses to access more credit for a longer period of time. Some key changes to the Scheme include extending the purpose of loans for a wider range of investment, increasing the maximum loan size from $250,000 to $1 million per borrower and increasing the maximum loan term from three years to five years. The extended terms of the Scheme will enable lenders to
continue supporting Australian small businesses when they need it most. The expanded Scheme will shift from providing access to working capital to helping businesses stay afloat during the crisis to now also enabling them to access more affordable and longer term credit so that they can invest for their future. The Morrison Government will continue to support small businesses as they seek to rebuild, adapt and create jobs on the other side of the coronavirus crisis.
Dickson Open For Business
I have also recently launched a Facebook Page to support local businesses called ‘Dickson – Open for Business’. Many local business owners are now using the page to showcase goods and services. Go to www.facebook.com/groups/ DicksonOpenForBusiness/ to find the page.

The Ferny Report Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
Since the start of the year you may have noticed the Bryant Construction wrapping on the fence line of Mitchelton State High School. Mitchie High is the site of a major upgrade underway with the Palaszczuk Government investing over $12 million in a new coding and resource centre, a canteen upgrade, a double basket ball court covering, and a refurbishment to the aging school hall to bring it up to modern standards.

Ferny Grove State High School Update
Building on the success of the recently completed Centre of Excellence, the Ferny Grove State High School is on track to receive its new 2,000+ seat auditorium. The $12 million development is well underway and will allow the High School to hold an ‘all of school’ assembly as well as host major indoor sporting and cultural events.
Exciting things are happening at Mitchie High
Mitchie High has been delivering terrific outcomes for students for many years, but it is time to make sure the investment is made in the school to bring it in line with other schools in Brisbane’s North-West.
Home Sweet Home
Work has commenced on the Samford Road Intersection Upgrade Project with the reconfiguration of the Pickering Street intersection. This project is the result of the traffic flow study conducted in 2017. Transport and Main Roads traffic engineers determined that the present design of the right-hand turn pocket outbound from Samford Road into Pickering Street was disproportionately delaying traffic along Samford Road and did not meet the Department’s safety standards. The works on the intersection will be conducted mainly at night over the next month or so – weather permitting. Substantial works are also planned next year for the provision of an extended turning pocket outbound into Glenholm Street with planning works for the Osborne Road intersection still underway.
COVID-19
Queenslanders have done a terrific job observing the rules around dealing with COVD-19 so far, and we are in a position to rebuild our economy today, only because our health response has been so strong. The situation in other states and internationally reminds us how important it is we keep up washing our hands and maintaining our social distancing.
A monthly update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc.
Recently the Society posted , a special Happy Birthday message on our Facebook page to local resident Keith Smith – who turned a wonderful 90 years of age!
The post prompted a flood of congratulatory messages and feedback. There were also a number of comments relating to the actual length of time Keith and his lovely wife Audrey have lived in their home. Keith and Audrey were married at Nundah in October 1951. They moved into their house at Royal Parade, Alderley, the following year: 1952. They have been there ever since nearly 70 years! It got us at the Society thinking: who out there has lived in the same home for a significant period of time? Over 50 years? 60 years? More? Feel free to send us your story and share your memories. Visit our Facebook page or email enoggerahistory@gmail.com We’d love to hear from you. Any pictures you have of your house when you first moved in would be most welcome, too. Please don’t forget that the Society has just re-opened its local history display to the local community each Thursday morning from 9.30am. Just visit the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Wardell Street (parking in Trundle Street). Social distancing and COVID-19 rules apply, but you are most welcome to drop in for a look and a cuppa. Take care, everyone. Andrew McMicking, President
