Let the Build Begin!
Construction has now commenced for the much anticipated Ferny Grove Central Development, with the official 'sod turning’ taking place on Tuesday 27th July.
Minister Mark Furner MP (Member for Ferny Grove), Minister Mark Bailey MP (Minister for Transport and Main Roads), Julian Simmonds MP (Federal Member for Ryan – representing Minister Dutton) and the Peter Honeycombe, Director of Honeycombes Property Group (the developer) were present on the day to mark this landmark occasion. This initial part of the development will see construction of the multi-deck carpark which is expected to take around 13 months to complete. The remainder of the construction will follow once this expanded carpark is completed and is projected to take a further 15 months (28 months of construction in total). During the build, there will be a considerable reduction in car parking spaces available (reduction of between 326 and 188 car parking spaces compared to now). Rail commuters are reminded to plan ahead and perhaps consider other modes of transport or make alternative arrangements. For example, why not work from home, car pool, use public transport to the station or the buses, park at another station or walk to the station? The good news is that, upon completion of the development, commuter car parking will increase by more than 40%, from 973 spaces currently available to 1416 spaces available for public use. Train and bus service timetables will not be affected during construction. Bus services to-and-from the Ferny Grove Railway Station are currently undersubscribed and do have the additional capacity required to meet increased demand. Translink monitors passenger numbers and are ready to increase capacity if required.
www.echo-news.com.au
It is also noted that the popular Ferny Grove Markets, that take place every Sunday at the Ferny Grove Train station carpark, and will be largely unaffected. The markets will move to the unaffected sites of the carpark during construction. Upon completion of the multiuse carpark, the markets will then move to this area permanently. This will benefit stall holders and the community as the markets will then be able to operate in all weather conditions as there will be under cover area available within the carpark where stalls can be placed. The Queensland and Commonwealth Governments have invested $20 million to expand commuter parking as part of the project. The project will inject $140 million into our local community and is projected to generate 700 FTE jobs once complete and more than 800 on-site and off-site FTE jobs during construction. Ferny Grove Central is part of the Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development at the Ferny Grove Railway Station undertaken by Honeycombes and MaxCap Group-led. Ultimately, Ferny Grove Central will become a mixed development, including cinema, retail, day-care, residential and expanded commuter access. Recipe of the month
Slow cooker Baileys Caramilk fudge
If you've never made fudge in your slow cooker before, there are plenty of reasons to try it. Slow cooking allows the fudge to cook at a lower temperature, which means the chocolate doesn't seize, resulting in a creamy texture.
Ingredients • 30g unsalted butter, chopped • 395g can sweetened condensed milk • 600g Caramilk chocolate, broken into squares • 60ml (1/4 cup) Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur
Method: Step 1: Turn slow cooker on to Low. Arrange the butter in the base of the slow cooker and allow to melt a little (this will grease the base of the bowl). Step 2: Add condensed milk and chocolate to the slow cooker. Cook for 20 minutes to allow the chocolate to soften. Cook, stirring every 15 minutes, for a further hour or until smooth and evenly combined. Stir in Baileys. Step 3: Meanwhile, line a 20cm square cake pan with baking paper, allowing paper to overhang the sides. When the fudge is ready, use a large spoon to transfer to the prepared pan. Set aside to cool for about 30 minutes before placing in the fridge for 6 hours or until firm.

Send your vieus ws! IMPROVING THE TRADITIONAL GOLF SWING Dear Editor, The Traditional Golf Swing has developed over hundreds of years. It is difficult to master. Only 3% of golfers, who are those possessing superior coordination and timing, have a handicap of 3 or less, while the average for all handicap golfers is about 20. Of course, practice will improve one’s handicap. But, if the method of hitting the ball can be improved and adopted, the average handicap may also be lowered, and perhaps more golfers might get more fun out of their golf. The question therefore is ‘how can this be done?’, if indeed it is possible. This question troubled me as a ‘golf tragic’ and now-retired scientist, so during the pandemic I started to think about it. I watched videos of elite golfers, read a few so-called instruction books and used my many years of playing the game to identify the ‘essential movements’ of the elites even some with radical swings. My initial theory was that if the EM’s could be put together in a different way, a new and more effective stroke might be developed. Initial trials of hitting plastic golf balls inside into a curtain eight metres away were unsuccessful. Finally, a new procedure emerged, which was partly successful but complex. After simplification, but retaining the EM’s, the New Golf Stroke seemed to at least provide an alternative swing warranting further trials. And it might be easier on the golfer’s back and need a lower energy input. If you are interested in trying the new swing, please drop me a line on dba41298@bigpond.net.au Regards, David Barr Email Letters to the Editor to admin@echo-news.com.au

Keperra Country Golf Club welcomes more new partners
A lawn care specialist, BBQ restaurant and skip supplier are the latest diverse businesses welcomed by the Keperra Country Golf Club (KCGC) as new partners following the club’s recent initiative to connect with and support companies in the community. KCGC General Manager Gavin Lawrence announced LawnPride Australia, which sells its specially developed turf products nationwide, as a Major Sponsor, and two Supporting Sponsors: American-style BBQ restaurant at Windsor, Proof BBQ & Booze; and family-owned skip bin supplier to the Brisbane region and beyond, Sunshine Skips. LawnPride Australia Principal Chris Chapman said the Club partnership was a perfect fit for LawnPride, with its range of fertilisers, pest control, weed treatments, growth regulators and other products engineered so that lawn lovers can keep their turf in tip-top shape and at the professional standard they see on leading golf courses and stadiums. ‘We know that golfers appreciate good quality turf maintenance and that’s been a priority for Keperra with its golf course and the Membership is enjoying the results,’ Chris said. ‘We want to be able to offer that same service at a grassroots level to the public (excuse the pun!). It just makes a lot of sense.’ For Ryan Lane, co-owner of Proof BBQ & Booze, making local connections is particularly important as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt business activity, particularly for those in hospitality. ‘I launched my restaurant not long before COVID came to town so we’ve had some challenges in the last nearly two years, but we’re still here,’ he said. ‘And if there’s anything that COVID has taught me it’s to support fellow local small businesses

A few opportunities remain to take up sponsorship packages with the Keperra Club. If you’d like to be involved, email Michael Dash on marketing@keperragolf.com.au or call 3355 7744.

Businesses Connecting and Giving Back
Tickets are on sale now for The Big Breakfast on 15th September, at Eatons Hill Hotel. The Big Breakfast is the Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce's major charity event for the year, with money raised going to support our local not for profits.
In 2019, over 300 business people came together for this worthy cause and raised more than $15,000. After last year’s Covid pause, 2021’s event is expected to be a sell out once again as we open the doors to business people, students and local community members. This is a great opportunity to network with other business leaders whilst raising some much-needed funds. After the challenges of 2020, local not-for-profit organisations have been stretched as they answer increased calls for help. This event is an important one in allowing the community to show their support for the essential role that these groups perform. This year, Phillip Di Bella joins us as our guest speaker with 'Entrepreneurial Lessons For Business Success'. Phillip is known as an engaging speaker with a wealth of experience to draw on, which is what makes his presentations so engaging. Though initially known for the establishment of Di Bella Coffee, which became Australia’s largest speciality coffee company, Phillip’s entrepreneurial spirit has brought success to other businesses such as International Coffee Traders, Abbotsford Road Specialty Coffee in New York, and more recently The Coffee Commune. Not satisfied with simply focusing on building his own successful businesses, Phillip has dedicated much time to supporting the growth and development of other businesses. Often referred to as an ‘Entrepreneur in Residence’, Phillip regularly lends his strategic thinking to businesses such as BDO Consulting, helping their clients overcome challenges, see new opportunities, and then supporting the commercialisation of these solutions. Underscoring everything that Phillip does is his drive for ongoing growth, development, and improvement - to be the best he can be and to help others achieve this too. Held at The Eatons Hill Hotel, guests will be offered a plated breakfast and the chance to network in a relaxed environment, whilst listening to an entertaining speaker. Guests also have the opportunity to enter any of the multiple raffle draws. There are some fantastic prizes to be won, including not one, but TWO holidays for two staying at 4-5 star accommodation at top Queensland accommodation. This event has proved hugely popular in the past, so get in quick and book your tickets for a morning of networking with over 300 business people and help raise funds for our local community. Even better, book a table so that your whole team can enjoy this fantastic event. Lockdown Won’t Stop Ace 5-A-Side Local Sport State Hockey Titles Soccer Soon To Start
Registrations are now open for the Albany Creek Excelsior (ACE) five-a-side competition – one of the biggest and best football events in north Brisbane.
The girls ready to take on the Under 13’s State Championships
The lifting of Queensland lockdown restrictions at the beginning of July came in the nick of time for 18 young hockey players from two of our local clubs.
The players were attending the 2021 Under 13’s State Hockey Championships. An early morning bus ride on Sunday 4th July allowed the girls to make their first games in Gympie, whilst the boys had to hop on a flight to Townsville with fixtures pushed back to accommodate the Brisbane teams. It is fantastic to see so many young players enjoying their chosen sport and having the opportunity to represent at a State Championship. Pine Rivers Saint Andrews Hockey Club, based in Brendale, had five boys in Townsville, (four of whom were representing Brisbane and one playing for Mt Isa) – Mitchell Little Kinder, Jono Kirk, Logan Thomas, Jack McPherson and Jett Pickering. The other local hockey club, Arana Ascot Hockey Club (based in the Hills District), had 13 girls attending, with 10 playing for Brisbane and 3 for other districts. These talented girls were; Josie Burgess, Vanessa Infanti, Matilda De Silva, Poppy Lind, Isobel McKeon, Ruby Price, Leela Christie, Georgia Beal, Jordan Halliday, Madilyn Standley, Charlie Elborne, Bianca Ryan, and Celeste Ryan. With Brisbane in the running to host the Olympics in 2032, let’s hope that we may be able to see some of our locals representing their country one day. More than one thousand players sign-up each year for the spring tournament, which caters for everyone in more than 20 age groups and categories from Kindy (aged 4) to Overs (45 plus). The ACE five-a-side has built up a reputation for being a great fun and social event, but also an ideal way to keep fit and improve ahead of the next winter season. Hundreds of players and teams return each year. In fact, many have already started to register. This year’s competition will run from the 5th October to 1st December, on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at South Pine Sports Complex – where ACE is based. Such has been the growth of the club – and its sister club Moreton Bay United – more fields and a new clubhouse are to be built at Brendale. Work is to start this year. ACE has won countless premierships and grand finals over the years. In recent seasons, the men’s team has become a dominant force in Football Brisbane’s Premier League. It is a far cry from the day ACE was formed in 1963 as part of Albany Creek Sports Club. The first junior team was formed in 1964. The following year, land was secured in Albany Creek. By public vote, it was named Wolter Park and remains, to this day, the footballing home of ACE. Hockey Umpire Realises Olympic Dream Local Sport
A 21st on Court
After a long wait, hockey umpire Aleisha Neumann has finally made it to her first Olympic Games.
A member of Northern Suburbs Hockey Club at Ashgrove, Aleisha is umpiring at the women’s hockey tournament at the postponed Tokyo Olympics. ‘It is a little surreal and very exciting for it to be finally happening. After the uncertainty last year there was a little bit of doubt that it would happen,’ Aleisha admitted. ‘Being involved in international hockey again and seeing my friends from all over the world again, some Aleisha Neumann of whom I haven't seen since the in action. Photo Credit: World Cup in 2018, is exciting.’ Andrew Blanchard It wasn’t difficult for the 31-year-old to keep motivated and stay fit after the Olympics were postponed by 12 months due to COVID-19. ‘Training is a normal part of my routine and lifestyle so it's really no different. The harder part has been the patience required to wait for the Olympics to happen,’ she said. Aleisha started umpiring hockey in Toowoomba when she was 14, but she had aspirations to represent Australia as a player. ‘When I was finishing high school, I thought that I maybe wasn't going to make it as a player and thought I could make it to the London Olympics as an umpire. Turns out it took a little longer to get there,’ she said. Aleisha has umpired at the World Cup and the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and is the reigning Hockey Queensland Umpire of the Year. She made history in early 2020 as the first woman to umpire an international men’s hockey match. A talented player, Aleisha has represented Australian Country, played for Brisbane Blaze in the Hockey One national league, and was named in Norths Women’s Hockey Club’s ‘Team of the Half Century’. Aleisha considers her achievements as a hockey player and hockey umpire to be of equal importance. ‘I don’t rank one over the other. I am immensely proud of what I have been able to achieve in both aspects. The Olympics has to be my top achievement as it is the biggest event on the sporting calendar,’ Aleisha said.
Pam with her Arana Netball family
An impressive milestone has been reached for one of Arana Netball Clubs players, Pam.
This year, Pam will have reached her 21st year playing for the club and she is still going strong with no plans to hang up her netball shoes just yet! Arana Netball Club is an extremely community-minded club and they wanted to recognise Pam‘s dedication to the sport with a gift she could use and cherish. With this in mind, President Jenna and Vice President Kym recently presented Pam with a personalised Yarn shirt. Pam, her team and families, had a sideline celebration to recognise the event and will continue the celebrations at their club trophy night at the end of the season. Runner Rob Making it Rain for Local Charity Yet another local champion, Rob Hopkinson, made waves recently, causing an overflow of support for those involved in Small Steps 4 Hannah. Living a double life as a pharmaceutical company worker and a notoriously talented Ultra Marathon Runner, Eatons Hill local Rob saw a chance to bring generosity to the table. Every year, Rob runs marathons to support one charity that tugs on his heart. But not only does Rob run for charity, the 46-year-old often runs in marvellous costumes! All the more to put smiles on our dials. This year, his choice was Small Steps 4 Hannah—a foundation that seeks to end cycles of domestic violence and be the guiding light for those who need the confidence to act. When asked what pushed him to fundraise for SS4H, Rob revealed, ‘Having female friends that have gone through the experience of domestic violence motivated me, but so did the loss of 4 beautiful souls. Seeing Lloyd and Sue and how they are so strong and willing to make a difference for the future was enough motivation to help them as much as I can.’ So, earlier in 2021, Rob reached out to the Small Steps 4 Hannah to ask if he could raise funds for their cause. Little did the foundation know, Rob’s idea of fundraising was to run 100km through the Blue Mountains, scaling a whopping 4,400 metre elevations along the way! To most people, this ‘fun run’ sounds anything but fun. To Rob, however, it was all in a day’s work. After less than 16 hours, he was crossing the finish line wearing a grin the size of the Nile. Later, Rob met with Lloyd and Sue at Hannah’s place to hand over the funds he raised along the way—an incredible total of $10, 581.

Small Steps 4 Hannah were not able to thank enough neither Rob nor his sponsors; 12RND fitness, Bed Monkeys, Specfurn, Belle Property Redcliffe, Beenleigh Mufflers, Brakes and Mechanical, TEEfit Fitness and MBM Insurance Solutions. What’s more, the local community have rallied together in Rob’s Facebook comment section to show their gratitude. ’Rob, what sensational effort and admirable gesture. You are very much Rob handing the cheque over to appreciated. Thank Lloyd and Sue from the Small Steps you so much for your 4 Hannah foundation contribution to this important work,’ reads one of the many lovely comments. If any more hearts out there are feeling a little tugged on right now, or want to support Rob’s continued efforts, he is always looking for raffle items, sponsorships, etc. To give him a bell, check out his Facebook page Run with Rob, or call him on 0466 744 416.

Rehoming Charity saving Gorgeous Greyhounds
You may know Greyhounds as racing dogs. Athletes.
You may have seen them running around the track at breakneck speeds, muzzles covering their faces. You may not know that Greyhounds are intelligent, gentle, affectionate dogs that make wonderful companions for adults and children. They enjoy being part of a family and after a short daily walk will happily laze away the day snuggled up on a bed or lounge. However, Greyhounds bred for racing spend most of their lives in kennels, with little socialisation or exposure to the outside world. For Greyhounds making the transition from racing life to pet life it is new and exciting, but it can also be a scary experience for them. This is where rehoming charities like I Want A Greyhound (IWaG) Inc. are invaluable. IWaG is a Brisbane based registered not-for-profit Greyhound rehoming, education and support charity. IWaG was founded in 2018 by four Greyhound loving people with many years experience as Greyhound foster carers, adopters and volunteers for Greyhound rehoming and welfare advocacy groups. Many racing Greyhounds have never entered a house, encountered stairs, walked on tiles or carpet, or ever seen another breed of dog. Everything is new for them from the sound of the tv, ceiling fans, sliding glass doors to washing machines etc. All Greyhounds that enter IWaG’s rehoming programme are placed in foster homes where they are slowly introduced to pet life. Every Greyhound adapts to these changes at their own pace. Some embrace the perks of pet life quickly. Others may require a high level of support from their foster carers and IWaG’s volunteer team (The Hound Crew), and also IWaG’s training partners and vets to help them adjust.
Once their vet work is complete and they have had time to settle into pet life and have been assessed, the Greyhounds are adopted into forever homes where they can live out the rest of their natural lives as much loved family pets. But all this comes at a financial cost. It takes around $1000.00 to transition Greyhounds from racing life to pet life. In the short time they have been operating IWaG has rehomed over 100 Greyhounds with more in foster care and others waiting to come into IWaG’s care. IWaG’s dedicated volunteers work tirelessly and put their heart and soul into fundraising and educating the wider community about the welfare of Greyhounds to build a strong, supportive Greyhound-loving community. If you want to connect with IWaG go to www.iwag.com.au or email them at hello@iwag.com.au If you want to see stories and pictures of the delightful hounds you can follow them on Facebook and Instagram. Question Time with Dr Katrina Warren
Pets
We were delighted to catch up with expert veterinarian, Dr Katrina Warren, recently to pick her brains in a Q & A session focussing on our feline friends and their toiletry habits! But why this topic, you may ask?!
Well, Dr Katrina is a paid spokesperson by global pet product expert PetSafe® Brand Australia who have recently launched an innovative product to the market that promises to save you time and money and guarantees you will never have to touch a cat poop again - the PetSafe® ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Box. Yes that is right. A self-cleaning litter box! Here are a few questions put forward to Dr Katrina from our local readers, along with her knowledgable answers! I have 2 cats; should I have a litter tray for each one? Cats don’t like to share their toileting area, so the recommendation is to provide one litter box per cat plus a spare. Where should I place the litter tray in my home? Ideally somewhere that is quiet and away from activity. Cats like privacy when they do their business. My cat isn't using his litter tray and leaves 'accidents' around the home, can you suggest why? The first thing to rule out is an underlying medical issue like a urinary tract infection, so please get your vet to do a checkup. There are many other reasons, such as a dirty litter box, not liking the type of litter or box, location of the box, and stress. Toileting problems are often a sign that your cat is stressed – perhaps you have recently moved house or have a new pet or baby. What is the benefit of having a 'hood' on the cat’s litter tray?
Dr Katrina Warren Hooded litter boxes are really created to keep humans happy as they help contain the smell a little and litter is not flicked out. They are not as great from a larger cat‘s perspective as they can be too cramped and the smell is contained inside the box, but cats like to have their toilet area clean. What is the best type of kitty litter and tray to use to prevent odours? Just like people, cats have individual preferences when it comes to their behaviours so it is important to choose a litter and box that works for your cat. One option could be work for both the owner and the cat are automatic litter trays like the PetSafe® ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Box which not only keeps the litter tray clean for your cat, but also helps reduce odour and mess for you.

A Difference in Mindset While some view the ageing process through the lens of increasing physical and mental limitation, others celebrate the wisdom that comes with age.
So how do we adapt more positively to life’s challenges? Australia’s oldest working artist, Guy Warren, has lived through the Great Depression, fought in World War II and emerged untouched by two global health pandemics. Though there are parts of ageing that he doesn’t enjoy, he still lives independently, holds a driver’s licence and enjoys a full work schedule. The difference is his mindset. ‘There’s always something to do. There’s always something to look forward to. One shouldn’t look back too much, one should instead look forward,’ he says. So why do some of us approach getting older with a sense of excitement and others a sense of fear? The answer is resilience – or more specifically, the way we are able to adapt in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress.
The Flinders Centre for Ageing Studies 2015 report, Ageing Well: Building Resilience in Individuals and Communities in which they found that having a higher sense of purpose in life and a more optimistic outlook buffered against the association between negative life events. ‘People with more flexible coping styles who are able to both persist with attainable goals and redefine or replace unattainable
goals, had lower levels of psychological distress irrespective of the number of negative life events they reported.’ Fortunately, resilience can be learned. A 2016 study published in Geriatric Nursing showed that there are several characteristics in three key categories shared by those aged 65 and over who were able to face challenges and come out the other side. Mental characteristics: Adaptive coping styles, gratitude, happiness, mental health and optimism. Social characteristics: Community involvement, contact with family and friends, a sense of purpose and positive relationships. Physical characteristics: The ability to remain physically independent and mobile, enjoy good health and the belief that they were able to age successfully. Tips for resilient ageing • Maintain an optimistic attitude • Maintain perspective; don’t let your thoughts run away with you • Engage in new activities • Cultivate new friendships or join a social group • Accept that some things are out of your control • Take action on the things you can impact • Practice stress-management techniques • Develop a spiritual practice such as prayer or meditation • Practice self-care through proper nutrition, exercise and good sleep habits • Volunteer your time to help others • Ask for help when you need it Source: The American Seniors Housing Association Submitted by Susanne Jones, Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD

Sharing the Beauty of Art
A Brit at heart but an Aussie by home, Christine Atkins has been painting up a storm her whole life, spending the last 20 years as a full-time professional artist.
Now a Brisbane local, Christine’s paintings capture Queensland’s tropical feel—from cool verandas to overgrown gardens, to mangos and papaws and monstera, to people and markets and the flowers she gleans from her own garden or surrounding streets. However, the key aspect that ties Christina’s work together is strong lighting, with many of them brought to life by mellow rays of sun or the cold white of winter daybreak. Of course, Christine is not only renowned for her pictureperfect paintings of the great outdoors—her still-life collections are just as worshipped. The local artist has a plethora of wonderful galleries to take a peek at, including her oils and pastels still-life galleries, and that of landscapes and interiors, people and animals, charcoal, pen & ink, linocuts, and sport paintings. On her website, there is also a section called Progressive Paintings, where Christine shows step by step progression of some of her masterpieces and discusses what the pieces represent to her. Each and every one tells its own unique story; has its own unique journey. And Christine invites everyone to come along on some of these journeys with her, as she is soon hosting a major Brisbanebased exhibition of her galleries. Her exhibition will be held at Metcalfe Gallery, Brisbane Institute of Art, on 41 Grafton St, Windsor, from 27th August to 8th September, 10am-4pm. More information (and virtual galleries) can be accessed on Christine’s stunning website: www.christineatkins.com.au

Behind the Brand Amber Petterson from Bra Fittings by Amber
Have you ever felt like there is something missing from your life, like having confidence in the correct fitting lingerie? Not unlike many women, Amber Petterson was a typical lady who felt overwhelmed when bra shopping in department stores. The feeling of not knowing who to ask for help, and the inconvenience of time spent searching turned Amber toward becoming a ‘quick grab’ bra shopper in most circumstances. Turn the clock back 13 years, and a friend suggested she have a bra fitting with an Intimo Bra consultant. That engaging and personal experience enabled Amber to commence her bra fitting business, which has now been operating for the past 12 years. Amber provides a personal experience by placing herself in the shoes (or bodies) of every client she meets and enjoys the incredible fulfilment of being able to change a woman’s perspective about herself, just by wearing a well-fitting, supportive and comfortable bra. ‘It’s more than just a bra’ Amber says. ‘When a woman looks in her wardrobe, what’s the first thing she generally sees?’ The impact that bad, ill-fitting underwear (or lingerie) can have on a woman creates many challenges. ‘It makes you cranky when you’ve got to pull up the straps all the time or catch yourself in the mirror and see the extra bit out the top. Not to mention, the stress when you think you can’t be fitted or when nothing seems to fit correctly. The impact this has on a woman’s self esteem is quite incredible’ Amber says. ‘I’ve had clients who’ve walked in to have a fitting with me go from ‘there’s no way you can help’ to ‘I didn’t know I could look like that!’ We’ve all had those bad bra days and, without knowing it, there is a local bra hero right here in our community who can offer a professional personal service with experience and knowledge to assist. From Tweens to Seniors, Amber’s wide range will change the lives of women in our community. Amber’s Bra Fitting studio is located in Ferny Hills and can offer an extensive size range with privacy assured for your personal fitting. Because underneath it all, women just want to feel comfortable, beautiful and confident.

When Tennis Courts Dotted our Local Suburbs
History
An update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society by Andrew McMicking Ash Barty's fabulous Wimbledon win recently gave a sense of pride in us all. And to many long-time North West and Hills District locals, it also meant memories of days gone by when tennis courts dominated Brisbane suburbs. Does anyone out there remember the wonderful tennis courts at the Moonah Park at Mitchelton? Run for many years by the late, great Harry Evans. Or Geoff Olsson's Tennis Centre at Everton Park? What about Mal Anderson's at Grange? Not to mention the several backyard tennis courts that were frequently established at individual households. The post-war years were a golden age in local tennis, with junior coaching classes, weekly social groups or more competitive forums like the Men's Metropolitan fixtures of a Saturday afternoon. At some point during the 1990’s, though, tennis courts and centres seemed to start disappearing from our community. Nowadays we still have the wonderful Pure Tennis Academy at Ferny Hills and the Roy Emerson Tennis Centre at Frew Park, Milton – the latter being the successor to the famous Milton Tennis Centre. This venue was host for decades to Davis Cup clashes, professional tournaments (like the South Pacific Classic) and Ash Barty with the 2021 epic encounters involving Wimbledon Shield, the likes of Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, Wendy Turnbull, Evonne Goolagong-Cawley, John Newcombe and John McEnroe. Does anyone out there have photos of Brisbane/local tennis centres or home courts that are no longer with us? We'd love to here from you. The Society is keen to build up our very limited stock in this area! You can send digital copies to enoggerahistory@gmail.com Please continue to feel free to drop in to our premises at the Enoggera Memorial Hall (36 Trundle Street) any Thursday morning from 9.30am to 1pm to view our local history display. Take care, everyone. Andrew McMicking

News and Views from a Tramway Muse by David Fryer
When John Atkinson drove the first electric tram in Brisbane in July 1897, little did he know that he was kick-starting a whole new revolution in public transportation for Queenslanders. Unfortunately, the revolution was slow to catch on, it still is, and Queensland certainly wasn’t the first state to introduce EV’s despite his claim to the crown in a newspaper interview some time later. That honour went to Melbourne in 1889. Of course, other countries flicked the EV switch much earlier. The world's first electric tram appeared near Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1875, and Berlin delivered a similar system in 1881. In the same year that Queensland heralded the first electric tram, London boasted a fleet of electric taxi cabs. And we shouldn’t forget that an electric car was also the first road vehicle to exceed 100 km/h just two years later, in 1899. Anyway, that’s enough of the history lesson, now back to the future. The Brisbane Tramway Museum will hold a special EV Day in honour of Queensland’s first electric trolley bus, a Hopebodied Sunbeam, Old Number-One. The platinum-silver people parcel is celebrating her Platinum Birthday (her 70th) this year and we’re going to make it a day to remember. When: Sunday 22 August, from 12.30 pm to 7.30 pm. Where: The Brisbane Tramway Museum, Ferny Grove. You can ride historic trams from the museum’s own collection and vintage buses from the Queensland Omnibus and Coach Society. The latest BCC electric buses will be on show and you can also check out an electric truck. But there’s more..... *A Cavalcade of Electric Vehicles of all types: scooters, bikes, mobility vehicles, golf carts, forklifts and of course, electric cars. And if that’s not enough, you can watch a tram-pulling competition with teams from local gyms flexing their muscles. There will also be a sausage sizzle, freshly ground coffee, and cold drinks / ice creams. Bridge FM Radio Station will broadcast the event live and Cr Ryan Murphy, Chair of the BCC Transport committee, will represent the Lord Mayor. So, if you haven’t seen the light, or even if you have, make sure you add this thumping event to your must-do calendar. You can even bring your own EV, or whatever gizmo that turns people on. For more information about the Brisbane Tramway Museum and future events visit www.brisbanetramwaymuseum.org The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly sponsored by the Brisbane City Council. www.echo-news.com.au
Divided By Distance But Not By Heart
History
An update from the Samford Museum
Even though they are separated by Samford and Bunya Conservation Parks, the Samford, Bunya and The Hills Districts have over the decades had various links to one another. This can be found in the October 1980 200th edition of the ADVISER and Samford Reminiscences Vol2. As early as 1879, our districts were within the Caboolture Divisional Board boundary. In 1888, Pine Divisional Board was formed, breaking away from Caboolture Division Board. The name changed to Pine Shire Council. Division 1 of Pine, which was later named Pine Rivers Shire Council and took in The Hills Districts as well as Bunya and Samford. In 1952, Division 1 had 869 voters. Some early Hills District families are known to have attended Bunya School. When in 1965 Bunya School closed, the school building was purchased and dismantled by Arana Hills Progress Association. Eventually, most of the usable timber from the school was incorporated into the fence of Arana Hills Community Centre in Camden Park. The teacher’s house was purchased by a private family and moved to their property towards Grovely. The house is now in urban Ferny Hills. A branch of the well known Hills District Patrick family came to Samford working with bullock teams and on ‘The Highlands farm’ before moving to Mt Glorious. In the mid- 1930’s, Mr Patrick built a house there, and Mrs Patrick started tea rooms. When The Hills Districts were sub-dived into residential
Grovely Station in earlier times. From Samford Museum's collection housing blocks, members of several Bunya and Samford families built their homes there. The milk truck collected milk cans from Cedar Creek and Bunya Road and farmers travelled Dawson Parade on its journey to milk factory at South Brisbane. When the train came in 1918 from Mitchelton to Samford, the Hills and surrounding areas, residents travelled to Samford, and later to Dayboro, without having to traverse the winding narrow Samford Range road. Today, Samford Museum’s membership includes volunteers from the Hills Districts strengthening the districts’ links. Following the 1984 formation of Samford District Historical Museum Society and opening of Samford Museum in 1986 Editor of the Adviser, Mrs Melva Welch, invited the Society to contribute a newsletter. Today members are grateful to continue our friendship with the Echo newspapers..

History
From Bunya Park to Blossoming Wildlife Sanctuary
Many locals will be familiar with Kumbartcho Sanctuary and Nursery in Eatons Hill. However, did you know that the site actually used to be a wildlife sanctuary and tourist attraction called Bunya Park, which operated in North Brisbane from 1968 -1994? We are lucky enough to have tracked down founding volunteer of the Kumbartcho Sanctuary and Nursery, Kim Pantano who has given us a wonderful account of how this beautiful Flora and Fauna haven came to fruition and was actually saved from widescale development in the 90’s.
Bunya Park The Closure This iconic Brisbane tourist attraction was set to close in late 1994 and the 25acre site was earmarked by developers to become a 56 lot housing development. This would have been a tragic loss to the wider community. Fortunately, the Pine Rivers Shire Councillor at the time, Graeme Ashworth and his wife Betty-Anne, were keen to preserve the site. Graham worked with the local community, who banded together to lobby all levels of government to have the site saved. Key members of the community who galvanised local support were Gary and Lisa Mitchell, Peter McLachlan, John and Rowan Lyndon, and Kim Pantano. After 12 months of negotiation between the community, the developer and Council a resolution was achieved. The site would only be able to have 16 housing blocks and the remainder of the site was returned to community ownership through the Council as a designated fauna and flora reserve. It was a wonderful win for the community as the site offered not only the opportunity to extend and enhance the Riparian rainforest along the South Pine River, but also engage the wider community into the importance of our native fauna and flora species. Bunya Park Moving Forward When the site was returned to Council in early 1997, the rebirth of the venue began. Whilst it was empty it had become overgrown and vandalized. The volunteers came to the site to rediscover overgrown areas and make them part of a community nature hub. In 1998, the Pine Rivers Community nursery was established to propagate local native plant species and encourage the community to plant them instead of introduced species. The nursery operates as a not for profit association and has gone from strength to strength since its inception. The site was subsequently renamed Kumbartcho -the local indigenous word for Hoop Pine. The 80 volunteers who are part of Kumbartcho are the back bone, which makes it the special place it is. The Council works in partnership with the volunteers to make it a hub of community-based activity, environmental education, passive and active recreation and native plant propagation. The site is open to the public 7 days per week from dawn till dusk. The nursery and environment centre have limited opening hours. For more info about Kumbartcho, go to www.kumbartcho. org.au. We hope to see you soon! By Kim Pantano Stay tuned next month for a great story from Amanda Dunne who lived at Bunya Park Wildlife Sanctuary from 1985-88. COMPETITION WINNERS
We are all about embracing the next generation of journalists and editors here at The Hills Echo, so during the school holidays, we launched a competition for all the young budding journos out there to ‘Create their Own Little Echo’ page. Entrants were asked to fill the page with what they would like to see in their own newspaper. We were overwhelmed by entries and the standard was incredible, which made judging really hard! However, two winners were drawn; Chloe Tharenou from Ferny Hills (Aged 10) and Ella Quinlan from Kedron (aged 9). This competition follows on from the Little Echo insert that was published in the May editions of our newspaper. The Little Echo is designed to showcase the creative talents of our youngest citizens by giving them a genuine platform to publish their photography, art or writing. Keep your eyes peeled for the next Little Echo edition in the November issue. If your child would like to make a submission, please email admin@echo-news.com.au for more details.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Tips on helping the environment.
plastic
-------------- CHLOE THARENOU
Plastic does not break down so it is a big threat to the environment and animals. Putting the right plastics in the right bin is also very important, let alone putting the plastic in a bin at all. Some people do not put plastic in a bin, this is a bad thing. Put recyclable plastics in the yellow bin and waste plastic in the red or green bin. Also, there is a blue bin for plastic bottles and poppa bottles but make sure they are empty, and the lid is off because the bottles are going to be recycle. STRAW NO MORE IS AN ORGANISATION THAT IS STOPPING PLASTIC STRAWS AROUND AUSTRALIA, IT BANNED PLASTIC STRAWS IN MANY AREAS. THIS HAS HELPED THE ENVIRONMENT VERY MUCH. THE ALTERNATIVE STRAWS ARE PAPER AND METAL, THIS IS A MUCH BETTER OPTION BECAUSE METAL IS REUSABLE AND PAPER CAN EASILY BREAK DOWN. Page 32 - August 2021, The Hills Echo

TAX TIME TIPS
from local experts TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
The tax season has begun, and we are already seeing confusion within two areas. (A) Shortcut method (80c per hr.) for claiming expenses whilst working from home (B) Motor vehicle costs Working from home The shortcut method doesn’t require you to have a dedicated work area, such as a private study. The shortcut method covers all additional deductible running expenses, including: • Electricity for lighting, cooling or heating and running electronic items used for work (for example, your computer), and gas heating expenses • The decline in value and repair of capital items, such as home office furniture and furnishings including E capital items that cost less than $300 • Cleaning expenses • Your phone costs, including the decline in value of the handset • Your internet costs • Computer consumables, such as printer ink and stationery • The decline in value of a computer, laptop or similar device. Motor Vehicle Costs There is a difference between a car and motor vehicle. A car is defined is a vehicle designed to carry loads of less than 1 tonnes and less than 9 passengers. Car expenses are calculated using either the Cents per kilometre method or the logbook method. You can't use these methods to claim expenses for other vehicles. For other vehicles, you claim the actual costs related to your work use of the vehicle. Other vehicles include motorcycles, scooters, and similar vehicles, as well as vehicles with: • Greater than one tonne carrying capacity, such as Utes, trucks and heavy vehicles
• A carrying capacity for nine or more passengers. It is important to get these claims correct. If in doubt, please contact your Tax Agent as there is often conflicting advice given for these deductions. The deadline for The Hills Echo Sept. edition is the 23rd August www.echo-news.com.au

Life on Land in action at Willmore Kindy
At Willmore Kindergarten, there is a strong belief that children learn in 100 languages or more, inspired by Loris Malaguzzi from Reggio Emilia. Here are some of the ways the children have been researching and thinking about trees. Since the beginning of the year, the educators have been talking and researching with the children about our earth and in particular the importance of trees. The process began as a result of the Director, Linda Meinicke, attending a Network meeting workshop run by Lisa Sonter on the UN’s 17 Sustainability Development Goals. As a staff and community, Willmore wants to make a difference to our world one tree at a time. The children and educators are fascinated by how trees grow and connect to each other just like a family using their amazingly complex root network - similar to the neurons in our brain and how they connect much like a web of roots. Using the language of drawing, the children were given a way to show their understanding and interest. The process began by brainstorming together what we know about trees and recording it on a web. The children sat together in a circle with clipboards and began drawing. They each know trees in their own unique way and the group discussion helped them to form a picture in their minds they could replicate in their drawings. One child drew how a tree grows from a seed, buds and then forms a tree. They later added a fourth picture to show that the tree was continually growing. The children have been very interested in growing, including how tall they are growing and how they never

stop growing. The correlation between trees and human beings comes up every day at kindy. Another way the children have explored trees is using a projector. There is a beautiful series on Netflix called Moving Art. It is filmed by Louie Schwartzberg and highlights the beauty in oceans, forests, deserts and flowers. The children really connected with this visual technology and it helped to further their thinking and understanding. It is our intention that using the projector will encourage the children to build stories associated with the films. The project will continue until we are satisfied with what we have learnt or wish to research. We are going to explore trees and their connections using clay as another language of learning. It is our hope that this close and detailed investigation of trees will help the children be advocates for their world and in particular the UN SDG 15 goal of Life on the Land.

Pick Porcelain for the Perfect Medium An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association
Maria Abramovich with the cold porcelain product and some of its uses,
At a recent monthly meeting we had an inspiring demonstration in the use of cold porcelain as a way to make our creations permanent.
Items made with fondant and other icing mediums tend to have a limited life and often people wish to keep these items as mementos. This product solves many of these issues and can be used to create flowers, figurines etc. Maria demonstrated Nicron cold porcelain and some of the moulds to make cute figurines. At a later date we are doing a workshop with the product. The Brisbane North Cake decorators are a branch of the Qld Cake Decorators Association and meet on the third Saturday of each month (except December) at the Arana Hills Community centre, 291 Dawson Parade Arana Hills, commencing at 1pm. We try to keep the business side of the meeting as short as possible so we can concentrate on learning new skills and refining old ones with workshops and demonstrations. Our annual Cake Competition and Display is on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th of September at the Upper Coomera Community Centre. Our display item is progressing well and some members are busy with competition cakes for the show. New members - experienced or new to cake decorating - are always welcome. Gardening
Bloomin’ Beautiful Times in the Community Garden
From The Hills Organic Garden Community The garden is looking absolutely amazing at the moment. We have had some beautiful rain to water our plants, the weather is lovely and cool and the plants are thriving.
Our snowpeas are starting to produce slowly. Our rocket is great to put in our salads. The silverbeet and shallots are ready to pick and we have had some delicious pumpkins to share with our members. We have also started to pickle some beetroot. The Pak Choy and Lettuce have finished but we have planted some more lettuce which will be ready in a month or so. Our Cauliflowers, Cabbages, Broccoli, Carrots and Potatoes all are doing very well but it will be a few more weeks before we can start picking. We are all enjoying the beautiful weather at this time of the year and continue to have a good roll-up on a Sunday afternoon. Not only do we enjoy the gardening aspect of the Community Garden but the social interaction is an added bonus. At the moment our herb garden has flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic (which has beautiful lavender flowers which are edible), tarragon, mother of herbs From the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club and garlic chives. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Our members meet on a Sunday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family, and $5 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980 for information.
How to Attract Bees to your Garden
Learn how to attract bees to your garden in Bob Luttrel’s talk What a disappointment! The July meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club had to be cancelled to comply with COVID-19 regulations. Bob Luttrel’s talk on plants to attract bees couldn’t be given, but all is not lost, Bob has kindly agreed to be the guest speaker at the next meeting on Thursday 2nd September. The meeting will take place at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. Time wise, winter has passed but we can still experience some winter conditions-even into September. It’s said midAugust is one of the driest months of the year. To conserve water, see if you can direct some of the household waste water to the garden area. Perhaps you could add a soil wetting agent to your potting mix or garden soil? Remember to keep using mulch to reduce evaporation, and don’t let the mulch touch your plants. If needed, its time to repot indoor plants or hanging baskets. When doing so give them a slow release fertiliser that will last a few months. Keep a lookout for Bindis in the lawn. Dig them out before the prickles appear in the centre of the plant. If you like to grow your own summer annuals and vegetable seedlings, now is the time to sow the seeds. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month except January, at The Enoggera Memorial Hall which is situated in Trundle Street, Enoggera and is accessible by wheelchair. Morning tea is served at 9.45 am and immediately after that, the meeting commences. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information, please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256. Manipulation & the ‘Gaslighting Tango’ This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry. This month, Elena discusses the topic of Gaslighting and offers suggestions on how to protect yourself.
I don’t know about you, but have you ever walked away from a conversation confused after apologising for something you haven’t done, feeling awful or guilty?
This can be your Mum’s guilt-trip speech for not visiting more often, your boss teasing you: ‘Oh come on, I never said that, you’re just being too sensitive’. Or could be a co-worker: ‘Ha, didn’t you know they’ve all been talking about you?’ Even your sibling: ‘you seriously can’t find your sunnies, what’s wrong with your memory?’ It hurts. This is because it comes from either a person with some kind of authority or someone you care about, which is why it is easier to blame yourself. The term ‘Gaslighting’ means ‘a form of manipulation’ where the goal is control. This can take shape by the form of questioning your own reality, memory or perceptions. They can do this by causing someone to distrust themselves, making someone feel intimidated and vulnerable or by preventing someone’s ability to stand up for themselves. It can be intentional and calculated or unconscious as a learned behaviour from their previous life experiences.
www.echo-news.com.au
Some examples of Gaslighting are; Withholding affection as a way of punishing you (implying they don’t care, silent treatment) : Victimhood where they exaggerate situations to make them the victim & they can’t function without you: Aggression or personal attacks like shaming, scapegoating, criticisms, mocking you, intimidation: Trivialising how you feel to make you feel belittled, like you are overreacting: Countering is when a person questions someone’s memories, like planting a seed of doubt in your mind: guilt-tripping that convinces you to feel bad: Diverting, when they feel trapped they literally divert the focus on you & your trustworthiness : Stereotyping when they intentionally use negative stereotypes to manipulate. Brutal. I know right. It’s easy for an outsider to judge someone ‘falling for this’ and why don’t they just see through it and stand up for themselves? This is like living with the enemy, but you actually respect their opinion, like a form of Stockholm Syndrome or self-fulfilling prophecy. It can start off harmless, but over time makes you anxious, depressed and developing feelings of inadequacy and worthlessness. You’re defending their behaviour and not being honest to your mates to protect them (and your shame), eventually a habit of apologising for yourself or second-guessing yourself, feeling like you can’t do anything right. So, how do you protect yourself without ‘setting them off’ and making things worse? Acknowledge its not your fault, you’ve done nothing wrong - and accept it could be happening to you (or someone you love). Start with a journal. This is evidence of the frequency, tactics that are used and importantly to validate your suspicions but - keep this is a safe space for your eyes only. There are support groups to connect with others to reinforce that you are not alone. You can see a therapist, a safe space to talk honestly about how you are feeling and discuss strategies to protect yourself. Re-learn to trust your instincts; this will help you regain a sense of self again. As hard as it is, resist the urge to argue as you are then playing their game - you won’t win. You can speak up and call out the manipulation when it happens - use respectful language and ‘I’ statements to avoid aggression. Follow these steps: 1. Acknowledge their perspective 2. Explain how the manipulation affects you and the relationship 3. Remind them of the original question/situation and correct any inaccuracies. Yes, it is easier said than done. So, don’t get distracted by their personal attacks, try to stay focused on what it is you originally want to say – even if you have to practice in the mirror before you can do it in person. By practicing you can correct any lies because you know the facts. Remember to keep your body language neutral to show that you are not upset or getting frustrated, be cool as a cucumber. Importantly, remember that you can’t control anyone else’s opinion, even if you are right. You can’t change someone that isn’t ready to change, especially if they don’t think there is a problem. So please, have compassion and understanding for yourself. Growth is impossible without change.
Do you know that if you text 0477 13 11 14 between 6pm - midnight when you are in need of support, a Lifeline crisis support worker will text with you?

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear R, I wonder if you have any thoughts on some strategies I could use with my 20 year old daughter. I find the way she flies off into an almost uncontrollable rage over what I feel are ridiculous things, really intolerable. It makes living with her very unpleasant. I’ll describe a recent and typical scenario. Fran has recently shifted back from Bundaberg where she’s been working for the last year. In this instance, she was putting her stuff away in her old bedroom, when she called me in to see if I could see her difficulty, which basically was that the room was too small. She had too much stuff, and the window, on a hot still day, does not provide much ventilation. To my mind, the room looked like a dump with all her junk piled everywhere. After I listened to her, I applied as asked, I thought, logic to the situation, saying ‘Sort yourself out, store what you don’t need, organise your present stuff, and then when you’re tidy and organised, you won’t feel so hot and bothered, and you’ll have more room to position the fan properly et cetera.’ Well! She just went off again with ‘You’re not listening to me. You‘re not listening to me, you never do.’- et cetera. She really winds herself up and can become quite abusive. I try to show that I have listened by staying calm and repeating, word for word, what she has just said, and once again supplying a solution I thought she had asked for. This only makes her worse, and she keeps repeating the same tirade until I walk off and usually out of the house to get away from her until she‘s calmed down. What’s happening here? I can’t understand what she’s wanting from me. Nola. Dear Nola, I think ‘You’re not listening to me’ could roughly be translated as ‘You‘re not giving me the answer I want to hear.’ She hands her problem over to you, and when you can‘t fix it the way she wants, you get ‘You‘re not listening.’ Now there’s a pretty difficult piece of sub-text going on here that you have to read, and you‘re getting conned into trying to solve the unsolvable. There are a few strategies that may be useful that I can think of. If you haven’t already, I would try sitting down with her when she is calm, and discuss with her how she thinks her emotional reactivity helps her solve any of her problems. Ask her is this the effect she wants to have on her friends or family? Can she see the consequences of her reactivity? How will it help her solve any of the big issues in life that she is going to encounter as an adult if she continues to behave in any stressful situation in this way? Also ask her if she can see when she has

calmed down (a) what it was she was wanting from you; (b) because you would like to be able to support her in her finding a solution if you can. But at the moment, and because of the way she chooses to deal with it, you are totally lost as to what it is she really wants. Can she help you with this problem? Put it back on her. And a question for both of you is: Does she really know what she wants? Does she have a hidden agenda? That is, in the present case, a bigger bedroom, maybe another family member’s. And she knows she can’t really have it. Is this the real origin of a lot of her reactivity? A refusal by her to accept the fact that she wants something that is neither appropriate nor possible to have at this point in time. See if she is amenable to such self observation and when she is aware of her triggers, disciplining herself to make the choice to use her will to calm herself down (a) by slowing her breath; (b) relaxing the tension she’s building up in her body; and (c) using positive self-talk not to go into that space. It is important to stress that this is what she is choosing to think and do to herself, and then dump on others to try and get her own way. This needs to be said gently, not judgmentally, or blaming, simply pointing out that we have choices about how we behave and that there are outcomes to them. Would she like others behaving this way to her? Also let her know that when you are talking things through, you will no longer be willing to listen to or support her in any way if she continues to behave abusively. You will not be reinforcing such inappropriate and immature behaviour any longer. Make sure you stick to this whilst maintaining the calm that you have employed so well in the past. Robin.
Fossicking Field Trip to Chinchilla ahead News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club
The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club is now operating on a sign in basis.
Workshop times on a Thursday are from 9am to noon for cutting and polishing of material and from noon to 3pm for Silversmithing. The Club has an annual field trip to the Chinchilla area for petrified wood. The petrified wood found in the Chinchilla area is regarded as some of the finest and colourful wood found anywhere in the world. This year, we will be going to Chinchilla in September. The reason for this is we are combining the wood searching trip with a bit of sightseeing. We intend to travel from Chinchilla to Miles, and then north from Miles to Gurulmundi. We will leave the highway here and travel through the Wildflower country. This is the time of the year when the wildflowers are at their peak in this area. This road through the forestry area takes us back to the Warrego Highway and we then travel east to Miles and Chinchilla. A brochure of this trip can be obtained from the Miles Visitor Information Centre. Chinchilla has two Fossicking Reserves where you can fossick for Petrified Wood and Fern. BCC Budget Deciphered
An update from Ferny Grove & Upper Kedron Residents Association
Baffled by budgets? Brisbane City Council have released their 2021-22 budget. It’s a lengthy read with over 1000 line- items bundled into a word document, making it difficult to get visibility of how it applies to the suburb you live in. So, through the wonders of excel spreadsheets and pivot tables, we’ve done some of the hard work for you. We found that as part of The Gap Ward’s $10.3m budget, Ferny Grove, Upper Kedron and Keperra (the suburbs our Association represents) have been allocated just over $3m in funding across the following categories:
In addition, each suburb within The Gap Ward (Ashgrove, Enoggera Reservoir, Ferny Grove, Keperra, The Gap and Upper Kedron) may benefit from a portion of the general allocations available to each Ward. This includes the Lord Mayor Community Fund ($35,000) and Suburban Enhancements ($567,000). Owner-occupied rates will increase by 2.5% however pensioners, not-for-profit and JobSeekers may qualify for additional rebates. Full budget documents are available on BCC’s website. We’ll also share more detailed breakdowns at our upcoming General Meeting on Sunday 8 August. Brisbane City Plan Revision The City Plan is about to be updated. To find out more and have your say, visit the BCC website home page and search ‘City Plan Amendments: In progress’. Feedback deadline is 9 August. Preparing for next Council Budget At our next General Meeting we’ll provide more detailed updates on local issues and seek your input on what you’d like to see prioritised in the 2022-23 Council budget. Please join us on Sunday 8 August, 2pm at the Upper Kedron Community Hall to share your ideas on the future shape of our suburbs. Themes for the discussion will include connectivity (how we and our wildlife get around) and amenity (how we play, socialise and access community services). Support your suburb FGUKRA researches and advocates for residents to all levels of government on local issues. To join for a once only $10 fee, contact fguk.communications@gmail.com

We are always looking for new players, so please do come along and enjoy the friendship with a cuppa and a biscuit afterwards. Contact our Bowls Coordinator Marcia on 0438 786 871 for more details. THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development Construction Commences After many years of planning and negotiation, I am pleased to report that we broke ground on the Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development on the 27th of last month. Ferny Grove Central, as it will be called, is a mixed use residential, retail and entertainment precinct located on the site of the Ferny Grove Railway Station. Federal Members, Peter Dutton & Julian Simmonds were on hand along with Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey and Honeycombes Director, Peter Honeycombe, as we officially launched the build on what will be an important economic driver for our local community. The project, led by Honeycombes and the MaxCap Group, will inject $140 million into our local community and is projected to generate 700 full time equivalent jobs once completed with more than 800 on-site and off-site full time equivalent jobs during construction. Once complete, Ferny Grove Central will include a 42% increase in commuter car parking – in addition to dedicated residential and retail parking for the precinct. Parking will be reduced at the station during the construction, so patrons need to be aware and plan ahead. Rail services will not be affected. Bus services, likewise, will not be affected and still have additional capacity available. Wherever possible, the Ferny Grove Markets will still proceed as normal.
I couldn’t stop smiling on 27 July when we officially launched the build for Ferny Grove Central at the Ferny Grove Railway Station. Active Game Day Fund The Palaszczuk Government has announced the Active Game Day Fund for local sporting clubs. Up to $150,000 will be available for community sports projects to assist clubs in being game ready. Applicants must have at least 20 per cent of their projects cost to contribute to the total funding required. The program, while still under development, will deliver quality fit-for-purpose, ‘field of play’ participation-enhancing works that meet grassroot level playing requirements. Examples of projects that could receive funding include developing or upgrading playing surfaces and installing or upgrading irrigation and field lighting. More information about the program’s eligibility and criteria will be outlined on the Department’s website: https://www. dtis.qld.gov.au/sport/funding-programs.
