A Culinary Festival Set To Delight Your Tastebuds

If you're always on the lookout for a reason to gorge yourself on delicious eats, here's the latest: a brandnew festival that will have you eating, drinking, and having fun, all at the local location of Narellan Park at Arana Hills.

The Spring Harvest event as part of the Tastes of Moreton Bay Festival will be taking place on the 3rd September from 10am - 1pm and promises for a fun-filled day out for all. Local food makers will have the chance to set up market stalls and show off their creations to festival goers. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself in the same stall as famous chefs! Alastair McLeod, the man who brought Ready Steady Cook into our homes, and award-winning ‘cake-trepreneur’ Pearly Sprinkles, who many will remember as a contestant from Zumbo’s Just Desserts, will be hosting cooking demonstrations on the day. Councillor for Division 10, Matt Constance, said this was the perfect day out for the entire family to learn from some amazing chefs and sample both sweet and savoury delights. ‘I urge everyone to grab a picnic blanket and come on down to the Hills District where you’ll find plenty of cooking, markets, and family activities,’ he said. ‘Half of the Spring Harvest will be outside in Narellan Park and the other half inside the Arana Hills Library where you can tour the library’s edible garden and participate in a wide range of family fun activities.’ The kids have the opportunity to indulge their creative sides with cake and cookie decorating workshops...and they will be able to eat them as part of Pearly Sprinkles’ engaging and playful workshop! The Tastes of Moreton Bay Spring Harvest is a free event,

Prepare to Repair

Do you have a broken appliance, torn garment, malfunctioning clock or damaged bicycle? Maybe a favourite piece of jewelry with a broken chain, or a mechanical gadget that's just not working? Never fear, Repair Cafe Ferny Grove is here! Opening their first workshop on Saturday 25th June, the Repair Cafe The Grove, manned with a team of willing volunteer 'fixers', welcomed the steady stream of "stuff" to be fixed by local residents. From lifeless computers to blunt kitchen knives, from clothing adjustments to broken furniture, volunteers were able to repair the broken items, giving them a new lease of life! Even with the few items that could not be fixed, the owners went away happy that they had been involved in the decision and were now more aware of the available options. After hearing about this first workshop, the Echo News team were keen to see what this fabulous movement was about and scored an invitation to attend the July workshop. We were blown away by the shear number of volunteers on hand and the enthusiasm that exuded each and everyone just there as they wanted to help! From Janette who met us at the door , the sign in and Covid safety attendants, to the dedicated fixers themselves, each and every volunteer was brimming with enthusiasm and kindness. Although the ‘Fixers’ are generally allocated repair jobs to their area of expertise, they will have a go at anything, as volunteer and tech guru Amy tells us. ’Usually I fix computers, however today I am having a go at fixing this old clock. I'm always up for a challenge,’ exclaims Amy. Moreover, if getting your item repaired for free wasn't enough, visitors are treated to tea and coffee, along with some delicious homemade bakes, served up with a smile by volunteer Wally! Anything and everything goes here. We met local resident Justin Meade who was grinning from ear to ear as his trusted meat thermometer was brought back to life by volunteer electronic expert Barry. So what exactly is the Repair Cafe movement about? Repair Cafe’s promote repair as an alternative to tossing things out. Local residents can bring their broken items to fix them on the spot with the help of voluntary repairers. There is no charge for repairs but a donation to cover operating costs is encouraged. Furthermore, the willing volunteers don’t just fix items, they pass their skills on to the owners, encouraging them to join the DIY revolution in a bid to further reduce waste. Usually, the owner sits down with a helpful volunteer, and a cup of coffee to join in the process of understanding the fault, and working out a practical fix. John Tennock, Coordinator of Repair Cafe Ferny Grove explains how important the movement is to reducing landfill. ‘We throw away vast amounts of stuff. Even things with almost nothing wrong, and which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair,’ explains John. ‘As part of the international Repair Cafe movement, Repair Cafe The Grove aims to help repair broken items, diverting them from the waste stream going to land-fill.’ So why not pop along and see how fun repairing things can be, do your part to reduce landfill, and learn some new skills?! Repair Cafe The Grove pops up on the fourth Saturday each month (except December) at the Grovely Mitchelton Scout Den, 170 Blaker Road, Keperra. The group welcomes residents from all local suburbs, including; Ferny Grove, Upper Kedron, Ferny Hills, Arana Hills, Keperra, Everton Hills, Everton Park, Mitchelton, Gaythorne, and Enoggera. Keperra Club Golfers Heading To Special Olympics National Games

Three Members of the Keperra Country Golf Club will be heading to Launceston in Tasmania in a few months to compete in the Special Olympics Australia National Games for athletes with intellectual disability. Dylan Price, Stephen Lawley and Jiho Park are among the 20 golfers who were selected to represent Queensland at the Games after the State tournament held at Keperra in March last year. The three golfers are part of the Special Olympics Brisbane Falcons Club and they will be joined in Tasmania by two of their fellow golfing Falcons, Christian Hauser and Ashley George, who also qualified for Team Queensland. Golf is one of the 15 sports athletes will compete in at the National Games, which run from 17th to 21st October. Dylan, Stephen, Christian and Ashley were selected to play in 9-hole divisions while Jiho will compete over 18 holes. On Sunday 10th July the five golfers got a valuable competitive hit-out ahead of the National Games when Keperra, as the home course for the Brisbane Falcons Club, hosted an interclub tournament for the six South-East Queensland Special Olympics clubs. All five golfers performed well, with Christian and Jiho finishing first and second respectively in the 18-hole Division 2 competition, Ashley and Dylan placing second and third in the 9-hole Division 1, and Stephen second in 9-hole Division 2. Team Queensland Special Olympics athletes are currently

Everton Park Roosters U15’s Flying to Cairns

For Everton Park Roosters Junior Rugby League Union’s U15’s team, leading the way with authenticity and dedication is at the heart of the lads’ values.

Being part of a small club run by parent volunteers and scarce resources, it is always a hard grind; they are in a lower division but maintain positive vibes and team spirit throughout every season. They truly push their own limits, even going out of their way to help families that were recently affected Some of the Roosters team members Harrison, Jack, Lincoln, Dylan, Jackson, by floods. Clancy, Campbell, George with Jules, one of the parents As a reward for all their hard yakka, the club is developing an end-of-year trip to Cairns for the U15’s. The objective of the trip is to provide an inclusive, unique, meaningful adventure and experience that the lads will cherish for years to come. We want to celebrate their commitment, and show them new adventures, connection, and comradery, whilst exploring some of the most beautiful parts of Cairns and our Indigenous heritage. The trip will give them a connection to nature, an opportunity to learn and grow from new experiences, recharge, and promote a feeling of happiness and positivity about themselves. Approximately 22 boys are set to attend the five-night trip this September holidays, plus 6 chaperones/parents. The itinerary is still in the works, but having the boys play a few games against the Far North Qld teams is definitely on the cards. But there is one problem—the club does not have the funding. So, starting from ground zero, the lads have begun to plough through some long months of raising money. First of all, the team is searching for a prospective sponsor to provide the lads with travelling shirts while they are away. In return, they will promote the sponsor’s company through social media and display their logo on the team shirt. Reduce your salt intake for a healthier heart Whether you’re working full time, a busy parent, or younger adult with a hectic social calendar – it can be hard to keep track of your average salt intake and maintain a healthy diet. But a high intake of salt often leads to increased blood pressure and the risk of heart disease for you and your family. Sadly, there are often no visible signs of high blood pressure, which means many people don’t even know they have it. Despite being unable to see or feel it, it is certainly a health risk to be taken seriously. Other than high blood pressure and heart failure, high salt intake is also commonly associated with conditions such as kidney stones, fluid retention, strokes and osteoporosis. Reduce your risk by making healthier choices each day, and the first step is avoiding processed food. Seventy-five per cent of our salt intake comes from packaged and processed foods we eat daily such as

bread, cereals, processed meats, cheese, sauces and spreads. High levels of salt are also added to foods such as packet soups, pies, sausage rolls, sausages, processed meat, pizzas and frozen meals. For a healthy heart – and to improve your health in general – make the switch to Gourmet Meals. Not only will you be able to eat a variety of dishes that are salt-reduced and fat reduced, but you’ll save time at the supermarket as well as cooking and cleaning at home. At Gourmet Meals, we can help you eliminate processed foods, excessive carbs and sugars in your diet as our meals are all portion and calorie controlled and contain little or no additives. Gourmet Meals are packed with flavoursome whole foods and vegetables and are all high in fibre and protein, and 100% gluten free. Give To Grow

Did you know that 1 in 6 Australian Adults is now food insecure and missing meals?

Worse yet last year 1.2 million Australian Children went hungry. There is a charity that is working to do something about it. It is called The Mini Farm Project. Their purpose is to resolve food insecurity in Queensland by creating a network of charity farms to grow food for those in need. You may have seen their showcase farm in Samford at Millen Farm. Here they have partnered with Meals on Wheels to provide free fresh and nutritious produce each week since December 2020. Nick and the team have plans to develop a site at Loganlea State High School which will be a template for school based charity farms around Queensland. Other sites in planning are in Wamuran and Coolum. They sell some of their produce to self fund the farm and employ Liam to grow produce. If you are looking for a way to give back and support a charity you can do so simply by buying some of their produce each week or fortnight without spending any more. They deliver or you can collect directly from the farm each Thursday or Saturday. To help and to get some amazing fresh produce visit - www. minifarmbox.com.au

Untapped Potential

Volunteering is a great way for seniors and those living with disability to give back whilst making new connections. So, what’s stopping more of us from signing up?

in getting more seniors and those living with disability into volunteer positions say new opportunities are emerging all the time. Inclusion Melbourne, which has developed a publication called Include Me! says the types of internships, work experience positions and volunteer roles traditionally undertaken include everything from planning events or fundraising and stocktake to gardening and offering guided tours. Virtual volunteering is also gaining traction as a way for seniors, or those living with disability to lend a hand. Tasks include creating and or maintaining websites for an organisation, performing online research, providing technical assistance to staff and clients, and helping with online marketing and communications. Those involved in the act of volunteering – which peak organisations describe as time given for the common good and without financial gain – represents one of the primary mechanisms for moving seniors and people with disability from being passive recipients of service to one that is socially responsive. Volunteering also plays a significant role as a pathway to gainful employment, encouraging economic participation and building work skills. This is significant given older people, or people with disability, face multiple barriers, such as discrimination, and are often excluded from the labour market. The numbers Volunteering Australia (VA) says more than 5.8 million Australians engage in volunteering activities. This yields a 450 per cent return for every $1 invested. According to the most recent ABS statistics, one in three adults with a disability or long-term potential health condition work without payment. A slightly higher proportion of those over 65 years of age volunteer their time, accounting for 17 per cent of all volunteers. The barriers Recently, VA commissioned analysis of the experience of volunteers during COVID-19. The research revealed that the decline in volunteering during the pandemic has been substantial, with nearly two thirds (65.9 per cent) of volunteers estimated to have stopped volunteering between February and April, 2020. But it’s not just COVID-19 that has stopped more Australian seniors or those living with disability from working voluntarily. The stigma attached to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities means that often they are not afforded as many opportunities to volunteer in the community as they would like. The bright side The good news is that, as part of the recent VA study, research found that volunteering helped protect mental health in many ways. They discovered that those who were able to continue volunteering during COVID-19 had better life satisfaction and psychological stress outcomes than those who had to stop or who had never volunteered in the first place. The data also showed that those who continued volunteering experienced less loneliness. The way forward Global health pandemics aside, organisations with an interest

THAT MADDENING TUNE

Have you ever wondered why you can’t get a particular song or tune out of your mind?

Psychologists have puzzled over this music boggling conundrum for years. It appears that a combination of simplicity, repetition and adrenalin attracting musical notes and sounds can turn an ordinary sequence of notes into a tune or song which becomes something unforgettable for the listener. This formula creates something like a mental flea bite and the resultant itch can only be combatted by scratching it or in this case, listening to it over and over again. It’s nickname is `sticky music` so called, because it sticks in your memory. Once a composer gets the combination right, they earn a ‘hit’ results, with fame and fortune as travelling companions. However, sticky tunes are very much an individual preference. What you find as ‘sticky’ can drive others into angry annoyance. These phenomenal sounds cover any era, so a piece by the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Nick Cave or even Hip Hop and Rap can be as ‘sticky’ as a Beethoven Concerto, a Mozart Minuet or a Verdi operatic aria. It all depends on your personal taste. Robert Schumann, the renowned 19th century German composer was diagnosed with psychotic melancholia. It was reported at the time that he constantly suffered from repetitive chords and tunes being ‘stuck’ in his mind. He

attempted suicide, before being hospitalised and subsequently dying aged 46 of the illness. How do you get rid of that sticky tune, I hear you ask? Continuing to play the tune consistently over and over can sometimes rid you of that pesky melody. However the trouble with me is the more I hear it, the more I want to listen to it! Some medico’s even claim that cinnamon bark may produce a sedative that nullifies the music centres in the brain. Surely the best way is to be determined and simply never play it again! But that, my friends, is easier said than done!

Willmore Community Kindergarten

Our goal as a community kindergarten is to bring our community together. We want the children that attend Willmore to know that they are part of a much larger community of people who they can learn from and with. We want the children to know that in our community, what they say matters and their vision for their community will be supported. Young children are passionate researchers and love to share what they know and have learnt with others. Willmore Kindergarten The projects we research and work on with the children Community library are always consciously thought out so they can benefit our

community. Over the past few years, we have been working on the UN’s Sustainability Goals. We believe that embedding knowledge of caring for our planet in our young children gives our world the best possible chance of being left healthy and strong. Children who love and care for our environment grow into adults that love and care for our environment. We want our children to know that little people can make a huge impact in the community. And we want our community to know that Willmore is so much more than just what happens inside these gates, and we are so proud to be part of the amazing Hills Flowers Made by the Lions club to celebrate community. KITCHENS

Top Tips When Renovating Your Kitchen

Research styles and trends that interest you Deciding whether you like a modern, minimalist kitchen or a Hamptons kitchen will dictate the design and can impact budgets. See below for current trends in kitchen design! Have an idea of budget Having a budget range will help dictate what is a necessity and what can be negotiated in your kitchen design. This will be different for everyone. To help form a base for this, Exclusiv Kitchens have compiled a pricing guide that can be accessed at https:// www.exclusivkitchens.com.au/exclusiv-kitchenrenovation-pricing-guide/ Pick your designer Someone who takes their time to come out to your home, sit down and discuss your ideas, and work with you to find the best result is the mark of a good designer. “The most important part of the design is the connection between the homeowners and their space”, says Lauren Gunstone of Exclusiv Kitchens. Find your appliances asap Appliances are a major factor to any kitchen. Due to demand and supply factors, there can be quite a wait on many appliances. Having your appliances sorted early will save you time and money and have your kitchen in sooner!

Trades Recently, sourcing trades (and quality ones at that!) can be a struggle. You want to look for someone who has a reputation for being on-time and has quality behind their name. Some kitchen design firms will have their own team of contracted trades that will take the pressure off.

What’s hot in kitchen design? Storage solutions: get the most out of your kitchen with innovative solutions, especially troublesome corner spaces Integrated appliances: hiding appliances, such as dishwashers and fridges, behind cabinetry offers a seamless, modern look Natural shades: colours like sage green and dark golds bring in a natural element, making for a tranquil space Black dramatics: introducing black into your kitchen adds a sense of luxe; pairing this with timbers and metal elements makes nothing short of a statement Feature splashbacks: patterned tiles or marbled stone creates a focal (and talking!) point

Building A Legacy When Jim Argent started his apprenticeship in carpentry in 1966, he had no inkling that he was starting a building legacy. Successfully working as a builder for thirty years out of the beautiful Samford Valley region, he took on his eldest son, Les, as an apprentice, and later also his second son, Clyde. The three worked together in partnership before formally starting Argent Building Services Qld in 2018. What started as a three builders partnership has now grown into a small business with over ten employees. Safety is Argent Building Services Qld’s priority, and that means not only safety measures on site, but keeping up with and implementing the various Australian Standards for Building Works. They are licenced with QBCC, and members with Master Builders Qld. Several building works licences, such as Waterproofing and Scaffolding, are also held by the team. Argent Building Services Qld confirm all our subcontractors are appropriately licenced before they begin work onsite. The Argents have worked on a range of building projects over the years and have a wide and particular skill set that is rarely seen in young builders. They’ve worked on heritage houses, restoring them to their former glory (whilst including all the mod cons), on new builds, home extensions and sprawling decks

RENOVATING

through southeast Queensland. In recent years they’ve diversified into insurance works, helping families rebuild in what is a difficult and sometimes confronting time. A current long-term project is the stage-by-stage transformation of a 1970’s built home in Samford Valley into a modern masterpiece. The family have a vision of modern elegance that suits the surrounds and allows for both cosy family life and impressive entertaining. Argent Building Services Qld began the project with the construction of an outside pool deck that adds a striking entertainment space to the side of the pool, whilst overlooking the property’s idyllic paddocks. A structural change to the home was next, with the family wanting to open up the living and dining rooms and kitchen to take advantage of the incredible cathedral ceilings and make better use of the space. This required an alteration to their roof structure, where extra beams were added so the internal walls could be removed. The most recent completion was the redesign and renovation of the bathroom. This included the removal and movement of windows in the brickwork, and again changing internal walls. The stand-alone bath is located under the newly placed, extended window, so the view of the rolling hills is enjoyed by the bather. Everyone at Argent Building Services Qld is excited to see what all of our clients envision for their homes, and help them make it a reality.

ELECTRICAL

The Importance Of Only Using Licensed Electricians

Do electricians need a license? Online platforms such as Facebook Marketplace and Service Seeking allow anyone to advertise their services. This makes it tempting to hire the cheapest option available. However, there are some important factors to consider, when entertaining who should be the one to work on your electrical repairs and installations. Otherwise, what appeared to be a saving, could well become the opposite. Handled poorly, electricity can be extremely dangerous. Licensed electricians, follow a well-defined set of safety standards, procedures and regulations. This ensures that all electrical work is safe for the home occupants, and also protects other electricians and tradespeople you may call to work on your home in future. Using a qualified electrician, also provides additional benefits for you when it comes to insurance. As part of their licensing, your electrical contractor must be insured. This is to protect you, your property and anyone who uses the electrical systems or equipment on your property, in the event something goes wrong. Further to this, your home insurance policy, likely requires that all electrical work be conducted by a licensed and insured electrician. In order for an electrician to acquire a valid electrical license, they need to have completed four years of apprenticeship.

Do I need an electricians to install air conditioning? Electricians who hold a Certificate 2 or 3 in Air conditioning and an ARCTIC license can specialise in the installation of split system air conditioners. They know everything there is to know about split system air conditioning installation. Attempting to install an air conditioning unit yourself can result in dangerous gas leaks, broken parts, electrocution, improper wiring, and airflow which will all create problems in the future. Do not try to DIY, if you are looking for a reputable electrician, call BRG Electrical who will install the unit for you safely and properly on 1300 34 35 34. Can electricians install smoke alarms? Absolutely! Provided they are licensed. Home safety legislation has recently changed, so it’s vital to make sure all your smoke alarms are upgraded in line with new regulations to be able to rent out or to sell your home. BRG Electrical are fully versed in all the relevant regulations, so do not hesitate to contact them. Does my switchboard need to be upgraded? If you have an older switchboard, it may be time for an upgrade. There is a high likelihood that it will get overloaded as it wasn’t designed to cope with all the new-age appliances! Old switchboards can be a potential fire risk whereas newer switchboards have in built safety switches. Contact BRG Electrical for a quote.

Getting The Financial Foundations Set Sometimes the hardest part about building or renovating a home is organising the finance. And if you’ve ever done it before, you’ll know how it can be trickier than your average mortgage. Whether you’re looking to buy land and build, renovate an existing property or sell and purchase a new home, checking your financial foundations first before you start is essential! Here are some top tips to getting the foundations right for your next project: Check your borrowing capacity One of the biggest mistakes people make is not knowing how much they can afford to spend before they start dreaming big. Having a realistic idea of your borrowing capacity not only helps you plan smarter and keep things within budget, but can also help you from over extending your monthly commitments. Check your rate If you have a current home loan, ask yourself “how long has it been since I checked I had the best possible product/rate”? Having a set and forget mentality with your home loan rate, especially in todays competitive rate market, is a sure fire way of missing out on potential better offers. Check your equity position If you’re looking to renovate or sell and buy again,

www.echo-news.com.au

FINANCING getting an idea exactly how much equity you may have to use is vital! Getting a real estate or online property appraisal will give you an idea of where you stand currently. Check your credit score Now that banks have all adopted comprehensive credit reporting, it is more important than ever to keep an eye on your credit score. Not only does this help you identify any potential issues upfront but also helps you monitor your score for any potential fraudulent activity. Check your expenses Having an idea of your actual monthly outgoings is a great way to identify any areas that you may be able to cut back on or improve. Lenders these days look to rely heavily on your living expenses when assessing your affordability for a home loan. You would be surprised how that daily cup of coffee adds up over a three month period! So where does your Mortgage Broker come in? Ask your local mortgage broker, Scott Palazzi from Loan Market to help you with all of the above prior to the banks seeing your application. Scott has a wealth of knowledge within the industry and says knowing this information upfront helps set the foundations for your future project. In addition, Scott says this will give you the best possible chances of gaining that all important bank approval! Contact Scott today on 0413 747 283 or email scott. palazzi@loanmarket.com.au

REAL ESTATE

Selling For Success

Considering selling? It’s important to firstly understand your potential buyers and their needs and wants and then, you need to stand out from the crowd. Below are a few hints & tips: Selling soon? Some little things you can do to ensure your home is dressed for success. ✓ First impressions count! Mow the front lawn, paint the front door & tidy the gardens. ✓ Declutter & de-personalise. Take down personal photos & ornaments, tidy wardrobes & ensure your kitchen bench is spotless. Buyers need to be able to picture themselves in your home. Plus the room will feel bigger! ✓ Little things count. Fix anything that’s broken eg. dripping taps, squeaking hinges etc ✓ Appeal to the senses. Open the curtains, turn on the lights & light a candle. Selling later? Get the most re-sale value out of your renovations by investing in the areas our buyers want. ✓ Update your kitchen The kitchen plays a big part in the perceived liveability of a property. One of the first buyer considerations is how the kitchen will fit into their lives. As a result, our buyers tend to place more value on a renovated kitchen than a bathroom.

✓ Add an outdoor entertaining area Adding an outdoor area to your home makes for a seamless transition between your indoor and outdoor living spaces. This helps buyers see the outdoor area as an extension of the house. ✓ Add an ensuite More often than not, an ensuite will come as standard in a modern home. As a result, this has moved to higher priority for today’s buyer. ✓ Invest in a functional work from home area This is new to the list! But not surprising after the significant changes over the last couple of years. ✓ Landscape the garden A landscaped garden can add value to your property for various reasons: improved curb appeal, perceived low maintenance & increased useability. When renovating to sell, the challenge is to update the space so it looks new and high-quality but not overly personalised. So remember to keep it neutral, increase storage space, opt for simple features & finishes and make it functional. How do I make sure I get the most bang for my buck? Get in touch with your local real estate agent sooner rather than later. We can offer advice on what to renovate, what to fix & what to leave as is, to ensure the best result when you go to market.

How To Choose New Blinds?

Every seller wants to achieve the best possible sale price for their property, so giving your home a renovation make-over could make all the difference. Go online and see what similar properties are available for sale near you. Look at what has recently sold nearby too. Make a list and see how the properties differ from yours. For example, a nearby property may have an ensuite. Perhaps spending a little money can give your home that edge and make it better placed with other properties on the market. Just be warned – you don’t want to overcapitalise! We have put together a few simple tips to help boost the value of your home. Inside the Home: Use a light and neutral palette for your interior paint colour. Replace old fixtures and fittings. Replace and fix cracked tiles, stained carpets or loose handles. Update any old taps, cabinetry handles, light switches and plug sockets, showerheads. Exterior: First impressions count! Wash down walls and doors and give the windows and ledges a good clean. You want to add as much street appeal to your property as possible! Hire a Hubby can help your property stand out from the crowd. Give them a call on 1800 803 339 for an obligation free quote.

Building or renovating a home can be quite daunting, but had you spared a thought for the window coverings in your home? Window coverings can affect the whole mood of a room so it is important to have an idea of what you wish to achieve before embarking on the build/reno. If you are putting in new windows, your choice of blind, shutter or curtain could influence the type and size of window you choose, and even where it goes in the room! Here are some tips for choosing the right blinds: • Personal style – window furnishings can reflect your personality and lifestyle. You can keep it simple, or inject a pop of colour and texture. • Light – What is the aspect of your house? What rooms get the morning sun or the western sun? • Privacy – Particularly important in bedrooms and bathrooms. Do you look directly at your neighbours or onto the street? You may require something with versatility, for daytime privacy. • Practicalities – Pick a suitable material for wet areas, high humidity etc. • Window function – how often do you open it, is it accessible? What furniture is around it? • Cleaning – if you have allergies, or are time poor, you don’t want a product that collects a lot of dust. Latest Technology Supporting Prostate And Kidney Care

Locals with prostate cancer and kidney stones can access quality care close to home with technology additions at North West Private Hospital.

Hospital CEO Chris Murphy said having the latest technology being utilised in Everton Park was a great support to local surgeons and a win for locals, with them not having to travel further afield to access. Holmium laser technology began being used by specialists at North West Private Hospital in March, to treat kidney and bladder stones. In addition, urology specialists are now also using the Da Vinci Xi robotic surgical assistant which arrived at the hospital last year, for minimally invasive prostatectomies to treat localised prostate cancer. Prostate cancer According to the Cancer Council, one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85, making it the second most common cancer in Aussie men, after nonmelanoma skin cancer. Over 63% of those diagnosed are aged over 65. Early detection and treatment can significantly improve prostate cancer survival. While it may not show symptoms in its early stages, the test most commonly used to aid early detection is the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test – although it is not a diagnostic test as it can only indicate changes in the prostate. Kidney stones According to Kidney Health Australia, kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract, particularly for those with a family history of kidney stones, or the elderly. Stones form when some waste materials clump together to form a solid crystal – from as small as a grain of sand to as big as a golf ball. Urologists at North West Private Hospital offer treatment options for kidney stones. Kidney Health Australia says people may help prevent kidney stones forming by staying hydrated with water, avoiding more than 1 litre per week of drinks with phosphoric acid – used to flavour carbonated drinks such as cola and beer – and reducing salt intake. If you have concerns about your bladder, kidney or prostate health, speak to your GP. An update from the Seniors Committee at The Hills Chamber of Commerce

The Senior Committee of The Hills Chamber of Commerce is geared to the residents who would like to take part in activities centred in the community. The Arana Hills Library is happy to be the base for some of them. An Art Group has recently been formed, meeting at the Arana Hills Library. It is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to learn art, just enjoy art and improve their skills. Drawing, Water Colour and Pastel will be the mediums and local artist Julie Bruce our guiding light. The first meeting will be starting Friday 5th August from 10am to 12pm with fortnightly meets. If you already paint, bring some of your work along. Bring your own art materials. If you are just starting out, materials will be shared. There is no cost for this group. Contact John on 0448 186 115 for more information. The committee have also been discussing the formation of a reading group. The group would discuss what you are reading and what is interesting to you. It’s good to share our ideas and inspire each other. Meetings would by once a month for an hour. Contact Carol on 0490 192 926 for more information. Lunches coming up later this year will take place on 20th October, a ‘Celebrating Seniors Month’ and a ‘Seniors Christmas Lunch’ on the 15th December. These events will be at the Arana Leagues Club - more information closer to the time but keep these dates in mind. ‘Brunch on Us’ is a project to bring lonely or isolated seniors back into the social spectrum of our community. We will take you out for a morning tea/light meal, just for your enjoyment and we hope that you will feel as though you want to be a part of your community in a short time. All you need to do is to contact us. Our contact details are below. We are looking for seniors who would like to volunteer to help us in our projects. If you can give us a small portion of your time for ‘Brunch on Us’, helping organise the lunches or be a part of the Over the Hills, we would love to hear from you. Brisbane Retailers Create A Unique Recruiting Experience

In response to the staffing difficulties that many retailers across the country are currently facing, a group of Brisbane retailers banded together to offer a unique recruiting experience. The ‘Speed Interviewing’ event, held on Wednesday 20th July at Brookside Shopping Centre, was a job matching fair using short, 3-5 minute mini-interviews to determine job suitability - think speed dating but with future employees not partners! The Brookside Speed Interviewing secured 12 retailers and attracted over 100 candidates, with registrations closing off before the event. Brookside Marketing Manager Christian Polglase explained the event came about because a number of the Centre’s cafes were struggling to stay open all day because of a lack of staff, and due to the success the centre will look to hold another one. ‘We came up with the speed interviewing idea as a novel way of appealing to potential candidates as a number of our cafes’ owners were reporting that they are struggling to attract staff. ‘The event was an Candidates being briefed on the process overwhelming success

The ’Speed Recruiting’ in progress as judged by all the positive feedback we have received from both retailers and candidates. So much so, that we are looking to hold the event again in the lead up to Christmas. ‘A lot of the jobseekers said they found it really helpful that they could go to the one place, speak to half a dozen retailers about half a dozen roles, all in 30 minutes. It’s such a different concept to the standard interview process,’ Mr Polglase said. Job-hunter Bryson Chapman said it was a great way to apply for a job. ‘It’s kind of like speed dating, but fun. It’s a good idea when you are looking for a job. I’ve met heaps of people, problem solved.’ Candidate registration is compulsory via the Brookside website and jobseekers are encouraged to keep an eye for the next registration at www.brookside.com.au

Giving our youngest citizens a big voice REPORT Here is a fabulous article we received from Ryan (year 9) as part of our Work Experience program. As you may have guessed by its name, his article is about robotics, its uses, and the impacts it has on the future. Ryan tells us he was heavily inspired by the Australian National 2022 RoboRave Competition, having just competed in it and won first place in one of its many categories. Enjoy his article folks!

Revolutionary Robotics

By Ryan, Year 9, Padua College Writer’s Club, the Eagle’s Quill Robots, a glint of possibility sparkles in your eye as you hear the word of the future. Robotics, a field involving both programming and engineering is one of the major evolving fields springing up from the ideas of mankind and involves the creation of robots. I’m sure you’ve heard about robots on television or on a TV show (I’m a Robo-Cop fan myself) and seen the wondrous things they can do, these feats are, in fact… fact, not fiction. From its humble beginnings in the 1950s by inventor George C. Devol, robots today are used to do things from cleaning houses and doing your shopping to defusing bombs and stopping furious forest fires. But that’s only the robots of today, what about the robots of tomorrow? Robots are constantly evolving with new technology such as sensors that can recognise faces, and ‘soft’ robots that mimic human movement. I’ve seen this firsthand having recently (a day before I wrote this) come first place with my team (BotBuilders Red) in the National 2022 High School RoboRave Sumo competition through seeing and talking to industry professionals as well as helping to build, program, and design a robot from the ground up. The competition inspired me to write this article and there I saw some of the future robots ranging from robot spiders that could climb up walls, and robots that walked upright and danced. But how does this help us? Have you ever seen the leading robotics company Boston Dynamics with their robotics dogs that have state-of-the-art 360-degree sensors? These robots are used in mines and caves to map surroundings and check for safety hazards like explosive gas or damaged equipment. They can do things humans can’t do which opens literal worlds of possibility. But robots don’t just have to walk or roll-on land, they can also go into the deep depths of the sea. So how can you get into robotics? Well, if you’re in grades 5-12 you Page 32 - August 2022, The Hills Echo

can join robotics clubs at your school, or if they don’t have one… you can make one! If you’re older (or in my dad’s case MUCH older,) online courses are a good way to learn about robotics in ways such as engineering and programming. I personally think robotics is great with the ability to save countless lives and make many more much easier through ways such as agriculture, firefighting, and exploration.

Hunter Gatherers of the News World An update from the Samford Museum

It is interesting to look back at how gathering news and selling subscriptions for a local newspaper was carried out in earlier generations. Today we can do this with apparent ease as we can now send news and pictures by mobile phone, email or text message, and also read many of our newspapers online. Prior to 1955, David Evans was employed by the North Coast News newspaper. In order to sell the paper he had to supply news which meant he had to contact folk in the areas covered by the paper. His visits to and around the Samford districts were made by rail motor or push bike. Sometimes he caught a lift on the Camp Mountain milk truck either in the front seat or sitting on the milk cans in the back. A trip to the Samford area meant overnight stays at either Samford Hotel or with the Scott family at Camp Mt. This slow mode of travel allowed him to meet farmers at work down on the farm, dusty from following a plough. The Village Pump was started in 1977 by the Samford and District Progress and Protection Association as a means of communication within the community for community groups and individuals to promote their activities of ideas. Double-spaced typed or legible handwritten contributions were dropped into collection points for editorial committee approval, typing on a The water pump similar typewriter, then printing. Distribution of the Village Pump was from several pick-up locations. to those once used at The name was adopted as appropriate as early villagers worldwide received their news when community water supply gathered at their local water pumps. And how our community over the decades has embraced it. points displayed at In 1986, members of the newly opened Samford District Historical Museum were invited by Samford Museum. Photo the editor of The Adviser (a voluntary newspaper in The Hills District) to contribute an article courtesy of the Samford of relevant museum news. Articles were dropped off at the editor’s home. Today members send Museum articles to The HiIls Echo by the convenience of technology. Thank you Echo team for continuing the opportunity to share news and history. A Mini Milestone

History

News and views from a tramway muse by David Fryer July 2022 marked an important milestone on the automotive calendar for vintage car enthusiasts. The humble ‘Baby’ Austin Seven is now officially 100-years old, a centenarian. The milestone probably didn’t generate a birthday card from the queen, but the occasion was certainly celebrated by enthusiasts around the world. The Baby Austin may cast a small shadow, but its influence was huge with numerous versions licensed worldwide: The ‘American Austin’ in the U.S., the ‘Dixi’ in Germay (later purchased by BMW), the Rosengart ‘LR4’ in France, and the Nissan 16 in Japan. In Australia, bodies were made locally and some sporting variations are highly prized today. The miniscule morsel of muscle is a passport to party and modern-day custodians are a jolly bunch of eccentrics. Dozens of events took place throughout the northern summer culminating in over one-thousand Babies of all shapes and sizes converging on Moreton-In-Marsh in rural Gloucestershire for an international rally on July 24th. Sadly, the iconic British Austin Seven was phased out entirely in 1939. The story may have ended there, but the Baby had a miraculous rebirth in 1959 under the BMC banner. Two models were initially offered: the Austin ‘Seven’ and the Morris ‘MiniMinor’. An assembly plant was also set up in Australia and from 1969 the new Baby was simply known as the ‘Mini’. Brisbane City Council did their bit by promoting the new Baby around the streets of Brisbane on a specially built Advertising Display Tram. The car shown in the photo is advertised as a ‘Morris 850’. It is unknown if this particular vehicle survives today, but the tram chassis lives on at the Tram Museum in

A Fiesta of Fashion

An update from the Arana VIEW Club Spring is just around the corner, and what better way to welcome it than with a Fashion Parade.

The Arana VIEW Club are holding a fashion parade at their September meeting on Wednesday 7th September. Cost for the two course lunch, tea or coffee and the fashion parade is $30. The club meets at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade, Keperra at 10.30am for 11am start. Fashions are by Portofino, so invite your friends along for an enjoyable time. Members enjoyed Brian Herd’s talk on the pitfalls of not being prepared with up-to-date wills at the recent meeting. Some of the stories he told certainly had the ladies thinking about their own situations. Some members have been attending The Lord Mayor’s City Hall Concerts that are on every Tuesday and thoroughly enjoying them, especially when they are free! Other activities coming up include a tour of the Maritime Museum, a guided tour of the City Hal,l or a visit to the Margaret McKinney Jewelry Exhibit at the City Hall. All of course are followed by lunch somewhere in the city. Please contact Carol by noon on Monday 5th September on 3355 5349 if attending. New members are again welcome this month and the club would love to see more ladies coming to enjoy their company.

Edible Flowers, Wedding Bells & All Things Sweet An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Club

The club has a busy time ahead with the Qld Cake Decorators Association Annual Cake Show on again in early September. It is being held at the Upper Coomera Community Centre on 9th to 11th September. The branch is entering a wedding cake for the wedding table display and several members are entering the competitions that are held. It will be great for members to catch up with other decorators after the two year break due to COVID. The following October meeting we will have a special guest demonstrating some of his wonderful skills with Pastillage. This is another medium frequently used to make structures that require extra strength so it promises to be a really informative and inspiring afternoon. I am always eager to support and sponsor initiatives that promote environmental sustainability with our school children. It is evident that Enoggera State School strongly values environmental stewardship and will be putting this grant money to great use.

Gardening

A Bountiful Harvest Seed Germination: An update from the Hills Organic What You Need Community Garden The garden is looking absolutely amazing at the To Know moment. We have had some beautiful rain to water our plants, the weather is lovely and cool and the plants are thriving. The snowpeas are about to start producing and the rocket and lettuce are great to put in our salads. The silverbeet, shallots and cabbages are growing well, and we have had some delicious pumpkins to share with our members over the past few months. We have also started to pickle some beetroot. Our young lemon tree has given us a few lemons for the first time and we look forward to what next year will bring. Sweet potatoes, climbing beans, kale, broad beans, carrots have all been planted but will be some months before maturity. However, there is always something we can take home from the garden at the end of our working day. We are all enjoying the beautiful weather at this time of the year and continue to have a good roll-up on a Sunday afternoon. Not only do we enjoy the gardening aspect of the Community Garden but the social interaction is an added bonus. At the moment our herb garden has flowering basil which is attracting the bees, society garlic, thyme, mother of herbs and parsley. All great to put in soups and casseroles during the winter months. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier, so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. As the days are getting shorter and cooler, we have decided to change our working bee time on a Sunday afternoon. The new time will be from 2pm to 4pm. As well, our members attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya, next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors. For more information, visit www.hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980. We look forward to meeting you! TIP: Avoid digging or planting in wet soil; working it damages the soil structure. Wait until the soil is crumbly and no longer forms a ball when you squeeze some in your hand (it doesn‘t have to be bone-dry) to till or dig.

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

Depending on Covid regulations at the time, Thursday, 1st September, is the date of the next meeting of the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. Barbara Beerling, the guest speaker, will talk about An Easy Way to Germinate Seeds. During the years of World War 2, there were lots of food shortages. Ration coupons were issued to the public who had to use these when items such as tea, sugar or butter were purchased. To relieve the local fresh vegetable and fruit situation, teachers at the Enoggera State School had a special garden prepared so interested pupils could grow and harvest vegetables, etc. to take home. Some pupils used to call this a Victory Garden. Much encouragement came from the teachers who explained the different stages of growth. They even had the pupils study how seeds germinate. This was done using a flat sided pickle jar. Large seeds like bean or pea seeds were placed inside it against the glass, and held there with a piece of damp blotting paper. It was not long before little roots and a white shoot appeared. As the roots extended, two plain leaves developed on the shoot. Next, the actual variety of plant leaves developed. The whole process was fascinating and the guest speaker on 1st September who is a qualified horticulturist will have more to tell. It‘s said, ‘August is one of the driest months of the year’ but who knows for sure what the weather will be like in 2022? Young plants easily become stressed with the winds and lack of rain in August, so consider diverting the washing rinse water to the garden area if need be. It’s time to sow seeds of summer vegetables and flowers if you want to have seedlings ready to plant in September. When transplanting, take care not to disturb the plant’s roots, and water it in with Seasol which minimizes transplant shock. Once the seedlings are established, a regular watering with a liquid fertilizer will ensure lush plants and blooms. Already Bindii is appearing in the lawn. Act quickly to remove these before their prickles develop. Aphids on young shoots could be troublesome just now. A gentle squash between index finger and thumb is a solution or a spray with liquid pure soap should control the situation. Garden Club meetings commence immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are welcome. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. Entrance to the hall is at 36 Trundle Street, Enoggera. For more information please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

Ferny Grove Garden Club Meetinge

The Ferny Grove Garden Club meets on the last Friday of each month at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton at 1pm. The next meting will be held on Friday 26th August. Members will enjoy a talk from the African Violet Society on how to cultivate African Violets. It is sure to be interesting and helpful to have advice from an expert on how to grow these beautiful plants. For more information, please contact Elizabeth, 07 3851 0568. www.echo-news.com.au

Counselling Corner

Broken Heart or Heart Broken? This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry.

Remember your first love, and when it didn’t work out – all that pain and heartache. People keep telling you, ‘Don’t worry, you are better off without them. Move on and just get over it’.

Well, imagine having a breakup later in life with someone who was your partner, or that you have children with and has been your constant for over a decade… It can literally feel like a broken heart. Because your emotional heart is broken, and the distress sends signals to your brain and can register in your body as physical pain. Your heart literally aches. So, just a quick heads up – we are mammals. We gain advantage in survival when we are in a close relationship, we are built for attachment and ‘pair bond’. But when it all falls apart, we are left alone- abandonment, isolation, rejection, fear of the future. Psychologically, it’s a drug withdrawal; your relationship was like a drug, associated with positive brain chemicals, so when they leave, it can literally feel like a withdrawal from addiction. And every time you ‘stalk’ their social media, or message them to check in, it’s like getting

another ‘hit’ of the love drug, which prevents you from moving on. Studies estimates you think about your ex-partner 85 percent of the day. You can also experience feelings of anger such as ‘Abandonment Rage’ when you are so angry and upset that they left. This soon can turn into self-loathing and humiliation: ‘Why did they leave me, what’s wrong with me, it’s so embarrassing, I feel like a failure’. This falls in the five stages of Grief and Loss. This obsession and rumination is like a prison sentence your mind, and you can’t seem to catch a break. So now, this can potentially lead to ‘Broken Heart Syndrome’. Not going too much into it, but it can have devastating outcomes for your health. Loneliness can cause inflammation as an evolutionary response, and it can take years to get your nervous systems back to baseline – our ‘Fight Flight Freeze Fawn’ (trauma response). This breakup is an extremely traumatic event. So, when someone is so upset and can’t get over it, there are legitimate reasons! Their body is betraying them, sabotaging their future success for a quick recovery. This understanding can lead to increased empathy and compassion. For all parties. Wait, don’t leave! Things get better… This is where I inspire hope for the future. All this evidence equates to rallying around those who are experiencing heartbreak, it is literally painful within their body, people need love, acceptance and belonging. Making someone feel like you are there for them, without abandoning them can help heal their broken heart. This can be so difficult to sit in someone else’s pain, you can feel helpless or uncomfortable because you can’t take that pain away. All this pain, we need to ‘retrain the brain’ to see beauty in life again. Getting into nature, Cultivating beauty, music, art, or whatever makes you happy. Speaking of happiness, Positive Psychology states it is an illusion. Sorry to burst your bubble, but if we are able to make a conscious effort to do these 5 things in our life (Positive/Gratitude, Engagement/Participating, Meaning/Purpose, Accomplishment/Goals), it will give us a feeling of wellbeing and life satisfaction, which leads to feelings of happiness! This is a process of finding yourself, reinventing yourself, and loving who you are. Listening to music that makes you feel happy. Finding water (ocean, lakes, rivers), because the sound of the ocean is reminiscent of being in the womb; it brings peace and calm. Please consider talking to a therapist about what you are feeling, plus the science behind regulating your nervous system (Flight Fight Freeze Fawn response) so you can be in the moment again. Put yourself first. I you have kids, they can be your greatest motivation. Yes, it hurts. Find people who understand. With time, you will gently slip back into your authentic self.

Do you know that if you text 0477 13 11 14 between 6pm - midnight when you are in need of support, a trained Lifeline crisis support worker will text with you? So if you are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping, please drop them a text. They listen without judgement and provide a safe space to discuss your needs, worries or concerns. They will also work with you to explore options for support. www.echo-news.com.au
