Doctor, Who Put TARDIS on My Street? TA R D I S — a n a c r o n y m standing for ‘time and relative dimension in space’; Doctor Who’s own, personal time machine; and a blue-painted phone box said to be alive. But what—or who—brought this zenith of scientific fiction to The Hills?

In 2007, David Engwicht released a novel, Mental Speed Bumps – The smarter way to tame traffic, on an enlightening yet peculiar The TARDIS street library in Upper Kedron concept. Engwicht encouraged other urban planners like himself to create something in their neighbourhood interesting enough to make curious drivers slow down. Taking his own advice, he transformed his front yard into a public garden for his community to enjoy. It was this concept, and this source of inspiration, that led local Tobias Volbert to construct a street library on his property at 59 Kingfisher Drive, Upper Kedron. Originally from Germany, Tobias grew up where Doctor Who was birthed—Europe—so it has always been close to his heart. Turns out, even here in Australia, he is not alone in adoring the series! Hence, his chosen theme for the street library. By the hands of Tobias’s talented neighbour, Dwan Moore, a book-filled recreation of the infamous TARDIS was built— certainly interesting enough to catch any driver’s or passerby’s eye. It is solar powered and can wholly light up under the night sky. However, arguably, its coolest feature is the small

speaker within that plays the Doctor Who theme song and TARDIS sound effects. Tobias tells of the already skyrocketing obsession with the structure amongst his neighbours, with one neighbour revealing they are now inspired to build a putt putt on their front lawn! The visionary also tells of his plans to paint a Doctor Who themed mural on the fence and create a 3D Dalek next to a bench behind the street library — the perfect setting for an afternoon read. Tobias has high hopes to have the rest of his passion-project completed by mid-2021 in time for his birthday. In the meantime, shoot on over to Upper Kedron to feast your eyes upon this unique community library. My dearest fellow bookworms and Doctor Who fanatics, this blue-painted phone box is far bigger, far better than it may seem at first glance. Trust me. By Georgia Wright

Tobias and Dwan have gone to great detail when constructing the interior of the TARDIS, with mirrors and an intricate ‘Cameleon Circuit’ - as seen in the image which is open for the whole community to use!

Council Breaks Ground with New Community Hub 2020 was a year of advancements for James Drysdale Reserve (JDR) in Bunya, with Council completing $5.1 million worth of refurbishments to its baseball facilities, as well as new field lighting works, field renewals, and the beginning of the long process around extending the western soccer field.

There are also ongoing plans to undertake maintenance and renewal of the existing hockey fields and Council is currently investigating the potential for an outdoor exercise precinct. 2021 will be no different in terms of upgrades. Construction is already underway on a brand new $1.25 million community building to benefit our region as a whole. This fit-for-purpose development will accommodate a variety of local community groups, with plans to open the space up to all walks of life. From house youth and senior services, to arts, crafts and community activities, this new building will be a bustling hub for the neighbourhood. The state-of-the-art establishment will feature two multi-purpose rooms, two meeting rooms, separate amenities for each tenant, a coffee servery, a community shed, and much more. As The Hills District continues to grow and flourish in the aftermath of COVID-19, sporting infrastructures are as important as ever. By creating a diverse recreational space to accompany the sport-focused facilities at JDR, the reserve will be elevated from a sports precinct to a lively community hub. In the enthusiastic words of Cr Matt Constance, ‘We have a vision to fill the space with Men’s Shed and Women’s Nestlike activities, a safe place where residents can come socialise Continued on page 6

and relax together.’ He then added, ‘But we’d also like the facility to become home to youth services and activities like board game nights.’ One local group that is especially keen to get their paws on this new building is The Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club. Overdue for an upgrade after spending the past 50 years at the old Scout Hall in Ferny Hills, the Lions pounced on the opportunity to move into this new space mid to late 2021. Not only will the Lions Club get a facilities upgrade, they will also undertake the management of community use of the new building on behalf of Moreton Bay Regional Council. The Lions Club President, Paul Ryan, announced that this was a ‘big win’ for the Lions and the whole community. Once the renovations are complete and the Lions have come roaring in to claim their new clubhouse, JDR will be thriving more than ever.

These unique markets are hosted by the Creative Samford community and offers a plethora of goods from artists and makers from around the region. From paintings to jewelry to cards and drawings, furniture, weavings and ceramics, plus so much more you can be assured you won’t be leaving these markets empty handed! Just remember to bring some cash as not all stall holders will have EFTPOS facilities. There will also be live entertainment available to entertain market-goers with the early colonial dance group and music of Phillips Dog demonstrating early dance styles and the music which accompanied these dances. If you are feeling peckish, why not visit the volunteers from the Community Library Samford and grab a cool drink and snag from their Sausage Sizzle? The 41 new Australian citizens who attended the Australia Day event with Sergeant Gary Stephens, Tim Mander MP for Everton and Counsellor for the Enoggera Ward Andrew Wines,

Our local area welcomed 41 new citizens during a citizenship ceremony that was held as part of the Australia Day celebrations on the 26th January 2021 at the Arana Leagues Club.

The conferees came from all around the world including; Mexico, the United Kingdom and the Philippines. All conferees were all delighted to become Australian citizens. The Rotary Club of Mitchelton did a tremendous job by organising this annual event, especially in light of the COVID-19 crisis and the restrictions that come with it. Each new citizen was presented with a Certificate of Australian Citizenship by the presiding officer, the Hon. Tim Mander MP for Everton. Also in attendance was Counsellor for the Enoggera Ward Andrew Wines, Sergeant Gary Stephens from the Ferny Grove Qld Police Service and Ms Sonia Canu from the Department of Home Affairs. Rotary Club member Don Biffin, was an exceptional MC and Rotary Club President Dean Parham, gave a heart warming welcome speech to the audience. Each new citizen was also presented with a gift bag containing Australian products that included; Tim Tams, Vegemite, Honey, Peanut Paste and an Aussie Flag, along with a native

plant. The new citizens also had a photo taken receiving their certificate that will be sent to them as a memento of the occasion. Entertainment of a high order was provided by the Jubilee Singers, who sang Australian songs and accompanied the assembled guests in rendering Advance Australia Fair at the end of the ceremony. The response on behalf of the new citizens was given by Mrs Alejandra Jimenez Ordpaza originally from Mexico. The Rotary Club of Mitchelton would like to thank members Rod Shannon, the Official Photographer and Lee Hurst, the Social Media Chair, for their work on the day. A special thanks is extended to club member, Ralph Davies, for his efforts in organising the entire event in order to ensure that the event proceeded. Thanks also goes to the Arana Leagues Club, which provided the room and morning tea free of charge.

NEW YEAR

NEW YOU

Now that the mayhem of New Year’s Eve has faded and the Christmas spirit has waned, it is now time to seize the momentum of the new year and take positive steps towards your health. The Hills Echo is excited to present this heath and wellbeing guide that offers tips and some great local businesses that can help kick start your health goals for 2021!

A Mens Health Hub in the Heart of the Hills TerryWhite Chemmart Arana Hills is thrilled to announce an exciting new service to join the ever increasing services offered by The Clinic Hub. The pharmacist manager Peter Fairgray, is bringing a first of its kind service to Queensland. Mens Health Downunder is a pharmacist-based program that has been offered to men in the ACT for nearly 10 years. This program has helped thousands of men with their health “downunder” since its launch, and is now poised to help men in Brisbane and beyond. Peter holds accreditation from the Mens Health Downunder team and will be offering a comprehensive Mens Health service. Three specialty areas make up the service, firstly pre- and post-Prostate surgery to set men up for the best recovery possible following the procedure. Secondly male incontinence, whether it has developed from old age, an injury, or post-surgery. And thirdly, erectile dysfunction issues, regardless of cause. You can also get assistance with a lesser known condition called Peyronie's disease. In

fact Peter can help with anything that relates to the health of the male anatomy! Private consultations can be booked with Peter to obtain information, medication options and medical devices, compliance understanding and to answer any questions for any of these conditions. “These are really sensitive issues and I know blokes sometimes don't like to talk about them, but who better to talk to than a pharmacist who has the knowledge and time to sit and talk, assist with rehab aids, improve compliance, provide solutions, and answer all your questions” says Peter. “It is distressing to think there are men - and their partners - in our community not doing all they can to have their best recovery and a close to “normal” life. Sometimes just starting the conversation is the hardest part, but I am here to help” Peter adds. TerryWhite Chemmart Arana Hills will be offering appointments to see Peter, book direct on the Men's Health Downunder website. Peter is also able to conduct telehealth consultations if you live outside of Brisbane or are unable to come to the pharmacy. This new service will also assist with couples going to see our Fertility pharmacist Kylie who runs a Fertility Hub at the pharmacy, to help the men whose partners are going through IVF treatments. Kasey, our credentialled diabetes educator says it may also be of interest to our diabetes service customers - as men with diabetes are at increased likelihood of having erectile dysfunction. If you, or a man in your life would benefit from meeting with Peter, please take the first important step and make a booking today. New day rehab unit offers respite to Queenslanders in pain As part of their recent $55 million expansion, North West Private Hospital has opened the new Day Rehabilitation Unit which features a new exercise class specifically tailored to help those struggling with the aches and pains of arthritis. Arthritis affects 3.6 million (15%) Australians and, one in five (22%) also experience high to very high levels of psychological distress as a result. Exercise is greatly beneficial for people with osteoarthritis and is considered the most effective non-drug treatment for improving movement and reducing pain in patients. As well as providing reduced joint pain, exercise can also improve joint mobility and aid better mental health. Led by physiotherapists and exercise physiologists, the benefits offered to arthritis sufferers through these classes may include reduced joint pain, greater strength and function, improved joint mobility, weight control and better mental health. Graeme Walker, Allied Health Manager of the North West Private Hospital Day Rehabilitation Unit, is proud to be offering a tailored approach to improving arthritis symptoms in patients. “The launch of this new unit has allowed us to offer new, diverse services to a greater number of our patients. “Many Australians aren’t aware that there are simple proactive ways to address arthritis, long before it reaches the point of being a debilitating condition, and ideally preventing that entirely,” said Mr Walker.

The new state-of-the-art Day Rehabilitation Unit at North West Private Hospital

With a variety of Allied Health Professionals available, Ramsay Health Care is encouraging Queenslanders currently experiencing arthritis to consider exercise classes which may help to reduce their pain, improve mobility and their mental health. Health Tip - Eat Nuts: Despite being high in fat, nuts are incredibly nutritious and healthy. They’re loaded with magnesium, vitamin E, fiber, and various other nutrients. Studies demonstrate that nuts can help you lose weight and may help fight type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Additionally, your body doesn’t absorb 10–15% of the calories in nuts.

Well, here is a fantastic opportunity. In March, on every Tuesday evening at 6pm, the Gaythorne Bowls Club will again be hosting FREE ‘Learn to Bowl’ sessions on the greens at the club. The Program is aimed at people aged 50 and over, encouraging them to try new activities to help keep them active and healthy. All the different activities are listed in the BCC’s booklet available at all BCC Libraries and on the council’s website www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/community-and-safety/community-support/seniors It is always appreciated if people could telephone beforehand to advise of their attendance and to ensure rinks are available for everyone to play on. How to Handle Herbs

From the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club Coronavirus restrictions permitting, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, in Trundle Street on the 4th March and 1st April.

The guest speaker for March is Debbie Aitcheson from the Chilli Patch in Minden. She will talk about herbs in conjunction with alternatives to use when what the recipe requires is not available. Sometimes when these plants are going to seed or are out of season, dried or frozen substitutes do not give the desired flavours - Debbie has advice about solving this problem. At past meetings, Debbie has delighted those present with samples of her cooking. Who knows if she'll have more tasty morsels to sample?! The main activities for February are mowing and controlling weeds. Most areas around this district are receiving some rain so watering is needed only when necessary. Keep up mulching the garden to save evaporation. Also prune Hibiscus and other shrubs that were pruned heavily last year. If you prefer to raise your own vegetable and flower seedlings start preparation now. Pansies, cineraries, petunias, allysum and snapdragons are some annuals to consider. In the vegetable line there's beetroot, cabbage, sweet corn and celery The meeting commences immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Love to Sing?

Gardening during the hotter months

From The Hills Organic Garden C ommunity

It was a welcome relief to receive some good rain and lower temperatures over the Christmas/New Year period.

The HOG garden always thrives so much better on rain water and the eggplants and cucumbers have produced some wonderful crops. The beans have also done well but aphids have been somewhat of a problem with the snake beans. It is really a matter of maintenance over these hotter months and, of course, with the rain comes the weeds! So weeding the beds, mowing and whipper snipping have been necessary to keep the garden looking good over the last few weeks. The members of HOG are very proud of their Community Garden and strive to keep it looking tidy and an inviting place to come and work as well as welcoming visitors. There are only a couple of months of really hot weather to endure and then the group will start preparing the beds for their winter crops. This is an exciting time for members as they decide what to plant. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around their beautiful garden. Members meet on a Sunday afternoon during the summer months from 3.30 p.m. to 5p.m. Some members also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. The garden can be found at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for juniors. For more information, visit www.hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980. We look forward to meeting you.

TAX MATTERS

from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills

The Team at TaxArana wishes everyone a Happy New Year!

Now that we are now well and truly getting back into the new year, perhaps one of your new year’s resolutions should be to better manage your tax matters. Get those old returns done, or if you are in business, talk to us about getting a health check done for your business. If you are still working from home, the Federal Government has extended the .80c per hour for all running expenses. This means there is no need to calculate costs for specific running expenses. Multiple people living in the same house can claim this new rate. For example, a couple living together could each individually claim the 80 cents per hour rate. The requirement to have a dedicated ‘work from home area’ has also been removed. Claiming of motor vehicle expenses is one area that seems to cause of lot of confusion for taxpayers. If you use your vehicle for work purposes, you may be able claim. Visit www.ato.gov.au/uploadedFiles/Content/ IND/Downloads/Car-expenses-factsheet.pdf to discover what is claimable. The ATO does focus on this area when reviewing returns so it is important that you keep appropriate records if claiming these costs. In summing up, get those tax returns up to date whether you are an individual or in business. Also, if you lodge BAS returns get those lodgements up to date as well!

War Story of TopNotch Survivor An update from The Gap RSL

The year 2020 was one we all hoped to forget - we all looked forward to a return to normality, but 2021 is now shaping up as a year of possibly even more uncertainty and instability. Nevertheless, RSL members in the Western Suburbs are everoptimistic and are resuming their activities. There are no surviving Veterans from the Great War, and the remaining ranks of the WW11 Veterans are thinning quickly. Those who served in the Vietnam War now assume the mantle of our ‘Senior Veterans’, and we are aware that there are many living in the Western Suburbs. They certainly now make up the bulk of the RSL Seniors. Their stories are many and varied; different units, different ranks, different roles and different experiences - too numerous to summarise here but all served with distinction. However, it’s worth mentioning just one example, long term resident of the Western Suburbs, Mr Ray De Vere MC OAM. Ray joined the Army in 1955 and held a number of crew positions in armoured vehicles, from Driver to Sergeant Commander and various instructor postings, until he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1966 . He served in Vietnam as a cavalry troop leader in 1969, and later in a variety training postings including as a tank squadron commander. Other overseas service included stints as CO of NZ School of Armour and a brief diplomatic tour in Fiji. After retiring from the Army in 1982, he led an equally illustrious career in academic and civilian life with a special interest in Veterans Affairs through the RSL. From 1987, he has held a number of prestigious ex-service organization positions, such as State Secretary of the Vietnam Veterans Association, State President of the RSL and various state and national appointments. Ray is a Life Member of the RSL and Vietnam Veterans Association and an Honorary National Vice President of the RSL. He was also chairmen of RSL War Veterans Homes Ltd (RSL Care) from 2002 to 2008 before retiring to introduce new blood into the nations largest exservice care provider. Ray was awarded the Military Cross for operational service in Vietnam in 1970 and the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1997. More details of Ray’s interesting career are available in his book ‘Three Zero Alpha,’ available through Amazon Australia or Amazon America. His portrait hangs in the Tank Museum in Puckapunyal. Brought to you by

War Chronicles from Our Veterans

Lest We Forget! These simple words are spoken at ANZAC Day Commemorations every year. But how do we ensure that, as a nation, we don’t forget the sacrifices of these ordinary men and women whose actions and experiences were extraordinary? This Story Australia is a charity dedicated to capturing and preserving the significant moments of Australia’s history, as told by those who experienced it first-hand via high-quality video documentaries.

In collaboration with This Story, Echo News is delighted to bring you the third edition of our monthly segment that showcases just a few of the veterans whose full stories can be found at the Queensland State Library (short bio's are available on the This Story’s website at www.thisstory.com.au). If you are a veteran and would like to share your story, This Story would love to hear from you! Email jeff@thisstory. com.au or call 0439 661 448

John Russell Born 18th June 1920

John joined the AIF in 1939 and was a part of the ‘Special Expeditionary Force,’ which helped to keep the Suez Canal open (similar to the 1st AIF’s did in WWI). John then joined the ‘Darwin Over Land Mobile Force’ until he was diagnosed with Typhoid and discharged in 1941. From there, John joined the Merchant navy and was on the Aquanita, the first ship to sail into Pearl Harbour after the infamous attack. As an engineer, John ventured on to the Antarctic and helped establish bases on Heard Island (1948), Mawson (1952) and McMurdo (1958). John published a memoir of his expeditions in 2019 called ‘Antarctic Engineer.’

Stella ‘Faye’ Clarke Born 29th July 1918

Faye was born near Ulverstone on Tasmania’s northern Coast in 1918. Faye enlisted as a Nurse and, before she was deployed to a military hospital in Palestine, her father gave her some sound advice, telling her that if she wanted to be respected as a young lady she should never smoke or drink alcohol. Faye talks about collecting gum leaves at Gaza Ridge to remind her of home. She now resides at Seasons Retirement Living in Caloundra. At the time of our interview in May last year, Faye insisted on completing a 2km walk each day and credits that to her great long-lasting health.

Frank McCosker 30/03/1922 - 08/09/2020

Frank was his parents ninth child and he grew up on a dairy farm in the Glass House Mountains. Like many others, Frank lied about his age to join the army. He was deployed to New Guinea and recalls in exquisite detail the Battle of Milne Bay. Frank was discharged in the middle of 1949 and joined the Queensland Police force where he spent the next 33 years until his retirement in 1980. Sadly Frank passed away in September 2020. As previously mentioned, This Story is a not-for-profit charity. Their high quality documentaries are offered online 100% free of charge to the public and allow all Australians to develop a deeper understanding of some of Australian history’s most significant events. If you would like to offer support, donations can be made online at https://thisstory.com.au/donate/. Any amount - large or small - will go towards the cost of producing these historical documentaries. Get on the Green for Golf Fundraiser

Get your golf clubs at the ready and be prepared to hit the green on Friday 23rd April for an Anzac Day Golf Challenge like no other.

This major fundraising event is hosted by local not-forprofit and registered charity, This Story, which is dedicated to preserving Australia's unique history by producing documentary interviews of our Veteran's personal stories. We live in a digital age where videos are priceless reminders of a loved one's smile and memories. We have a chance right now to capture our Veteran's memories of youth, war, resolve and family before they pass on and take their stories with them. The urgency has never been so real. You can do your part today by joining them for perhaps the last opportunity to play at Victoria Park Golf Course before it is closed in July and redeveloped by Brisbane City Council. Guide to Getting What You Want How often do you express your true needs and wants?

Over the holidays, I made sure I set aside a lot of time to spend with my two little boys, who are 3 and 6. One day I felt like I needed a break to recharge. My typical tricks of hiding in my room for ten minutes or pretending to hang out the washing were not working, so I called on my husband to take a break from work so I could head outside for a quick walk. It was exactly what I needed. So, what does my not-so-perfect parenting have to do with grants? In this instance, I asked for something I needed – I don’t always – but this time I did. However, Welcome to ‘Grab that I see many for-purpose organisations either asking for what they need only once, or not asking Grant’, a monthly column at all. Hidden Gems in Redcliffe Peninsula

News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club

The Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club re opened their clubrooms on Saturday 23rd January, a bit later than expected, due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

If you visit the Arana Hills Library in February, you will see a display by the members of the club. This display consists of rough and polished gemstone specimens, silverwork and other lapidary work done by members. People often ask, ‘Where can I go fossicking around Brisbane?’ Years ago, there were several places where lapidary material could be obtained rather easily. Now it is probably down to one location - the beaches of the Redcliffe Peninsula. The beach north from the Redcliffe jetty is the place to start. Just walk along the beach when the tide is going out and look for

small pieces of agate and chalcedony in the gravel line that the wave action has left. After rough seas is a good time to look, as the wave action stirs up the gravels on the beach. If you are more adventurous, then try the spit at Scarborough at a very low tide. Here, you can find larger pieces of agate and chalcedony. If you are lucky. Years ago there was a Jasper farm at Upper Coomera, a Rhodonite deposit in the same locality and lots of places in the Tweed Valley and around Ipswich in the Bremmer River where petrified wood, gate, etc could be found. The clubrooms now have a fresh new look and welcome new members who may wish to join the club. You can come along any Thursday morning between 9am and midday or Saturday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm. to have a look around. Here's hoping that conditions for organising field trips to collect cutting materials will improve in 2021! For more information about the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club Inc. please contact John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

A stepping Stone to the Olympics for Synchro Star

Locals in The Hills and Pine Rivers district will be no stranger to Albany Creek local, Isabella Zanatta.

Whilst they may not know her name, they will know her by her sheer determination and quiet demeanor. Isabella spends up to 20-25 hours a week training whilst juggling university and work in the hope to achieve the biggest dream of all-being an Olympian representing her country in Artistic Swimming (formerly known as Synchronised Swimming). However, this talented lady is no newcomer to representing her country. Since falling into the sport a mere 4 and a half years ago, she has made her Australian team debut in 2017 (the Junior National Team) and secured a Gold Medal in New York along with her fellow Neptunes club team member, Madeleine Laurent. She then went onto achieve her next big goal of competing at the Junior World Championships at Budapest! Unfortunately, 2019 saw Isabella dislocate her knee, whichcrushed her sights for the 2020 Olympic trials. Nevertheless, Isabella had a powerful ally by her side in the form of Krisztina (Kristi) Szedlak. Kristi is Australia’s Junior National Team Coach and Head Coach at Bella’s home training club of the Neptunes Synchronised Swimming. Under Kristi’s guidance, she was able to come back stronger both mentally and physically taking out both solo and duet events with Madeleine in the New Zealand Open and Malaysia Asian Open. Following the COVID-19 outbreak, normal training came to a halt. However, through the COVID isolation period, Kristi and Isabella worked over Zoom six days a week finding new ways to train in flexibility, endurance work and synchro skills. This enabled Isabella to build up a high level of fitness ensuring that when the pools opened she would come back stronger in an all-round aspect. The opportunity to trial for a reserve position for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics arose after girls retired from the original 2020 team. It is such an amazing opportunity for Isabella, and to work alongside the current 8 girls that will travel to Tokyo is an exciting experience. ‘No matter the outcome, I want to give it my all and walk away from these trials feeling proud of myself and knowing that I swam my best. That is all I can ask for,’ said Isabella. These trials for Isabella are an incredible opportunity and will no doubt be a stepping stone towards reaching her dream of one day becoming an Olympian!

Young Reporters Take the Reins

In collaboration with the Young Writers Club at St. Williams Catholic Primary School, The Hills Echo is delighted to publish a monthly 'Student Reporter Column' called Young Reporters Take the Reins. This column is designed to give students a platform to have a voice within our community and be able to express themselves through writing. This month, we showcase budding writer Zoe D. from Year 6 at St Williams who has written a great story about ‘Blade’s Adventure’.

Blade’s Adventure

By Zoe D. Year 6

Blade was an ordinary boy who lived an ordinary life. He had an ordinary sister, Annabelle, and they lived with their ordinary mother. This family had the same plans every day because of their very ordinary life. One of the things they did each day was go down to the lake by their house. Blade really enjoyed this because when he went there, he always felt like adventure was waiting for him, he just had to find it. One day on their schedule, Blade, Anabelle and their mum were at the lake. Blade was bored waiting for adventure. Suddenly, he saw something shining in the water. It was a bottle with a map inside. Blade wanted to grab the bottle, but his mum said they were going home. Blade begged to stay, but his mother refused. When Blade got home, he told Anabelle about the map. Together they made a deal that when they were at the lake tomorrow, they would find the map and start to follow it. But the next day it was raining, so they could not go down to the lake. The two children sat at the window watching the rain and Blade fell asleep. When Blade woke up, he was at the lake with Annabelle. They had the map and were following it when suddenly before them was a boat. The children made the decision use the boat to keep following the map. They came to what seemed to be a hole in the water. The map was leading them into it. Before they both knew it, the boat was travelling down, very fast, into a swirling hole in the lake, it was almost like a water slide. For a second Blade thought, ‘this is not possible right?..... and then CRASH! They landed on a hard wood surface but with no boat in sight. Blade realised that he was underground and that there was a whole city down there. He heard Annabelle calling out his name but could not see her. He looked around and heard a loud BANG! Blade woke up at the window and it was raining outside. He was confused and asked Annabelle how they got home but she said, “What boat? What city?” Blade sadly realised it was all a dream. Now, every day he sits at the edge of the lake and waits for a real adventure. www.echo-news.com.au

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

Dear Robin, Why do we do the things we most promise ourselves we won’t do to our children? I feel really awful and a bad mother for behaving the way I do. My husband defends our daughter and says I’m far too harsh on her. I hate to say this but I find her irritating. Bobbie is eleven years old and honestly she is a good kid. She does everything asked of her and causes very little trouble. She is always there as mother’s little helper. I might think that I was just one of those women who really doesn’t take to being a mother. I can’t say that because I feel very differently about my son who is no-where near as ingratiatingly willing to please and basically seems to be his own person. That I feel about and behave in the way I do with my children disturbs me. I just hate myself when I hear out of my mouth hurtful words towards my daughter that are nearly identical of those my mother said to me. Sometimes I am able to stop myself, but most of all I do not want to feel this way about my daughter. Dear Jackie,

What is really important is that you are aware of what you are doing. So is your husband. Some questions first: When the words of your mother to you, come out of your mouth to your daughter, is it because her behaviour reminds you of yours as a child? How hard did you try by being a good girl to win your mothers’ approval and love. How did her harsh words effect you? Is the memory of this the reason for your promise to yourself to behave differently. You use words like “ingratiatingly willing to please” – as distinct from your sons’ independence and “sense of his own person”. Does your daughters ‘neediness’ to please remind you of your own futile efforts and that cost to your young sense of personhood? Is a perceived pref-

erence toward your son about your own unconscious want for your daughter to be less like you were? Is it a reminder of that, that causes you to ‘react out’ “in your mothers words”? Maybe you want your daughter to fight back in a way you could not. Without self judgement, allow these ideas and others like it to simmer. The ones that give you a body hit are the ones to take note of. Understanding why we are doing, what we are doing is the first stage of being able to let go of unwanted behaviours. This is not an uncommon pattern of behaviour, one as a child I personally witnessed with two friends. These two friends were the recipients of similar behaviours and said, each after becoming a mother of two boys; “well that is it, the cycle’s ended, with two boys I am not in danger of doing what my mother did to me”. Behavioural patterns from our childhood are deeply encoded. They are our models. You have your mother’s model of how to parent a child that behaves as you did. Where you differ is that you are aware of it, are conscious of not giving into it every time and that you do not want this for yourself or your daughter. You also have your husband’s awareness and support in this. Use this. Instead of ‘judgement’ feel compassion for your inner child that was so inappropriately hurt. Through your daughter and the more compassionate understanding of her needs for love and the way she seeks it from you, allow yourself to love and heal the inner child of your childhood. Give to this inner child and your daughter what your mother could not give to you. Discuss all the aspects of this openly and honestly with your husband. He could be a wonderful support in helping you both work out and obtain your desired goals.

The Opportune Arrival of a Wise Raccoon

A world overrun by technology, a new generation of screenaddicts—this is the future our society may face. Yet we march toward this fate without a flicker of fear. Why?

Research upon research highlights the negative impacts that too much screen time can bring to children. Insomnia, behavioural problems, learning difficulties and poor overall health and wellbeing all share one common factor—a direct link to technology overuse. That’s where Jesse Hewitt and Julian Steincke come in. With one being a local literary genius and tutor for QUT’s Indigenous Unit, and the other a talented illustrator and graphic designer, the pair are well equipped in navigating the plains of creating an children’s book series about technology overuse. As Australians re-emerged from ‘hibernation’ in the form of COVID-19 lockdowns, so did the star of their series, Raymond The Raccoon. Ready to greet the nation, our new furry friend has been brought to life on the pages of the pair’s first instalment, Raymond The Raccoon – Misses His Friends. Jesse and Julians’ shared vision is to use this book—amongst their many others to come—as a ‘pedagogical vehicle’ that educates children on health and wellbeing. Running on a full tank of captivating illustrations and engaging narratives, their series is set to combat technology-use abuse amongst youths.

Here is the blurb: ‘Follow Raymond, a loveable Raccoon, on a quest through the woods as he experiences some of the harsh realities involved in a culture dominated by screen obsession. Through following Raymond’s quest, children discover that their health, wellbeing, and friendships can be greatly improved by disconnecting from screens and reengaging with the real world.’ Already, ‘Raymond The Raccoon – Misses His Friends’ has had a great local reception, with our wonderful community sweeping under Jesse and Julians’ feet to hoist them up into the spotlight. Stoked about this accomplishment, Jesse reveals, ‘It's absolutely fantastic to have the first one done and dusted. … In saying that, we have already started on the next in the series!’ What’s more, they are also in the process of bringing the community another children’s book series—this one exploring life concepts such as mindfulness, physical health, and emotional wellbeing. And to end on an even more exciting note, Jesse and Julian are using this book to keep the world turning for budding bookworms. For every copy sold of ‘Raymond the Raccoon – Misses His Friends’, the cocreators will donate another book to an Australian child! So, I believe it is time to make like a raccoon and scurry down to their website at www. raymondtheraccoon. com.au to purchase this awesome new children’s book series. Enjoy your read! THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

Honeycombes Property Group will shortly announce the successful tender to build the project and will announce the build date. The TOD will provide a massive injection of jobs into our local community with 700 full-time-equivalent jobs created during the build and a further 700 full-time-equivalent ongoing jobs generated by the complex once completed. Honeycombes have now signed most of the anchor tenants to the project and have opened expressions of interest in the residential options on site. Negotiations and planning for the TOD have taken many years and have required a collaborative approach across all levels of government. Thank you to everyone in the community for your interest and support to get this project to the build stage at last. This will be a tremendous asset to our community which will provide the jobs, amenities and car parking spaces we need in the future.

School updates

TOD Update

There was fantastic news over the Christmas/New Year period as the final hurdle to the Ferny Grove Transit Oriented Development (TOD) - commencing construction has now been cleared. Brisbane City Council (BCC), the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have all signed off on the $120 million project. Following the final approvals received by the BCC in late 2020, the TOD received the all-clear to proceed to construction in early 2021.

Schools across the length and breadth of the Ferny Grove Electorate have received classroom upgrades and building completions with many of the maintenance backlogs completed over the Christmas holidays – just in time for the start of the new school year. With 2020 now behind us, most students and parents will be well-versed with the quick actions school administrations must take to deal with the changing environment COVID-19 has presented us with. Make sure you sign up to updates from your children’s schools as each school has different capacities and numbers, and must take all factors into consideration when determining policies regarding conduct on the school grounds. I wish all the best for the class of 2021!
