Murals To Mark A Monumental Occasion
The artworks at Pure Tennis Ferny Hills
It certainly is a ‘Barty Party’ down at Pure Tennis in Ferny Hills with the addition of a new artwork.
Brisbane Graffiti Artist ‘Smalls’ took to the walls at Pure Tennis Ferny Hills to paint a mural of Australian Open champion Ash Barty. ‘Smalls’ said he was thrilled to be involved in something so special. ‘What an absolute privilege to finish this portrait just hours before her victory at the Australian Open! This mural is a celebration of power, determination, success and heritage shown by Ash Barty,’ said Smalls. This artwork has been in the pipeline for some time and compliments another mural of Rafa Nadal that dawns another wall at the complex that was painted sometime ago. As Leanne from Pure Tennis explains, timing is everything. ‘It just so happened both players won the Australian Grand Slam, so the timing couldn't have been better,’ said Leanne. ‘We wanted an edge to the facility and both of the players were chosen as the owner's love tennis, Rafa and Ash.’ If you have a chance, pop down to the complex on Samford Road and have a look at the masterpieces. I think you will agree that the tennis academy could not have chosen better roles models for our young players to aspire to!

Rotary Club of Mitchelton welcomes 39 new Aussies on Australia Day
Mitchelton kick started the Australia Day celebrations with a citizenship ceremony to welcome 39 New Aussies at the Arana Leagues Club, Arana Hills.
Presiding officer Tim Mander MP announced that the citizens are from 16 countries, including Egypt, South Africa, Hungary, Zimbabwe, Jordan and the United Kingdom, and are joining thousands of other Australians who are celebrating citizenship on our national day. Australian citizenship ceremonies are an important part of our nation's celebrations with more people becoming citizens than any other day of the year. The event was attended by the Jubilee Singers whose beautiful tones welcomed the new citizens with the national anthem and other great songs to celebrate, The Jubilee Singers are also celebrating 50 years of performing this year! Australia Day gives all citizens, whether by choice or birth, the opportunity to openly reflect on what it means to be an Aussie and to celebrate our great nation, our rich indigenous and migrant history and our promising future. Tim Mander MP encouraged everybody on Australia to celebrate the values that make us proud to call ourselves Australian, including the respect for the freedom and dignity of others, the rule of law, democracy and a fair go for all. Thank you to club member Ralph Davies who organised the entire event, the Rotary Club of Mitchelton would like to make a mention of thanks to him for all his efforts to ensure

that the event proceeded. Another thanks goes out to candidate Dr Mohammed Khairy Abdelmaksoud Els Abdelaty, of Egyptian heritage for providing the response on behalf of the recipient's and sharing their story. A delicious morning tea was also provided by the Arana Leagues Club of scones, fresh fruit, lamingtons, sandwiches, and warm beverages, which was enjoyed by all.

Anonymous Donor with a Lions Heart
Christmas is a time for giving and this was certainly apparent at Brookside Shopping Centre last month.
As per every year, The Lions Club of Brisbane Bunya were selling their Christmas Cakes and puddings at their stall within the shopping centre, when an individual at the Brookside Shopping Centre stall indicated their desire to purchase all the cakes and puddings displayed on the table - which they did. Much to the surprise of the Lions volunteers, the cakes were instantly donated back for resale and the anonymous donor went on their way. Lions Club of Brisbane Bunya President Ms Kay Liddle wants to thank the community for supporting the Club’s Christmas fundraising projects in 2021 . ‘Record cake and pudding sales were made along with a noticeable increase in giving sentiment and sincere generosity,’ she said. ‘Literally tonnes of Christmas cakes, puddings and trees were sold along with cash donations and raffle ticket sales which helped raise tens of thousands of dollars.’ Further, Ms Liddle said the bulk of the funds raised go directly to local community projects including school breakfast club, community centre donations, sausage sizzles, and maintaining community assets. Some funds also reach into medical research laboratories working to cure diabetes and childhood cancer. Brisbane Bunya Lions Club member and Project Chair for Christmas Fundraising Mr Kevin Hedges also extends a big thank you to local businesses and members of the public for heartening support and generosity.

President, Brisbane Bunya Lions Club Ms Kay Liddle and Project Chair Christmas Fundraising Mr Kevin Hedges. ‘Our gratitude also extends to Brookside Shopping Centre management who continue to provide tremendous support providing space for the selling of the cakes and puddings. ‘Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of these projects was the generosity and positivity of our community through their purchases and the high level of generosity in loose change and notes that were dropped into the white donations bucket - thank you,’ said Mr Hedges. Further, other businesses also sell the cakes as a community service contributed greatly to the fundraising efforts. Businesses involved included Westpac Brookside, Rode Meats, the Anglican Parishes of Grovely including Arana Hills and Mitchelton churches and other local outlets. For anyone wondering, yes, the cakes and puddings are available all year round, email brisbane-bunya@lionsq3. org.au or visit www.facebook.com/LionsBrisbane.

Planning Ahead
An update from the Ferny Grove Upper Kedron & Keperra Residents Association This month we continue to outline what we included in the community-led budget submission provided by our Association to Cr Toomey (The Gap Ward) in October 2021.
The submission included recommendations on expenditure categories within BCC’s budget being: local roads, parks, bikeways, footpaths, reserves and public transport. In our January column, we focussed on what we submitted to Council in relation to local parks. This time, we’ll focus on bikes and pathways. More footpaths and bikeways was one of the most frequently requested improvements desired by the community. With an expanding population of all age groups wishing to make their way safely around our suburbs with prams, bikes etc., it is important that footpaths exist and are in good repair. There are a significant number of paths that come to an end for no apparent reason other than it crosses into State Government held land or works are intended by Council to be assigned to a property developer. We believe this is no reason for Council to delay provision of suitable and safe pathway access to residents. With three schools in our precinct, the safety of children travelling to/from school should also be prioritised. Based on community feedback, we presented the following as priority budget projects: • Complete the footpath on the corner of Canvey and Levitt Roads - approx. 40m • Complete the footpath on Upper Kedron road that runs either
Page 8 - February 2022, The Hills Echo
side of the entrance to the Recycling Centre to/from the Aqua park. • Build a footpath along Upper Kedron Road from O’Quinn Street past Julattan Park • Complete the footpath on both sides of Levitt Road (from Rosella/Minnie Streets) • Repairs to Canvey road footpaths The community also supported: • Building a footpath connecting Canvey Road to Kedron Brook (via bypass corridor) - approx. 500m • Cleaning the bikeways along Levitt Road and Upper Kedron Road more frequently • Extending the footpath along Inverness Street We also recommended that the Council investigate new and emerging paths. • Many streets, for example Tallimba street, have no footpaths. • Build or grade the dirt tracks that are being formed across the suburbs in lieu of Council provided footpaths. • Widen Lanita Road to improve cyclists safety, or consider putting both bikeways on one side of the road (ie. to offer a wider cycling path) While the final budget allocation will be determined by Council, we trust they will have regard to these community recommendations and look forward to sharing details of what we submitted relating to other budget categories in future columns. FGUKRA researches and advocates for residents to all levels of government on local issues. To join for a once only $10 fee, please contact us at via email at fguk.communications@ gmail.com. All welcome at our AGM 3pm Sunday 20 February 2022 at the Upper Kedron Community Hall.

An Update from The Lions Den
From the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club News with Paul Ryan Well the New Year has commenced, and as we have experienced over the last two years of COVID, this year is also going to be one of uncertainty as Governments and our Health professionals try to keep us and our economy safe.
Paul Ryan This time of year many of us make New Year Resolutions, which is a Western and Eastern Tradition. We resolve to change our behaviours and improve our life going forward. However, like most, I concentrated on the superficial in the past – things like; stop smoking, lose weight, exercise more, save money and get organised. These were all doomed to fail because unlike good goal setting there were no intermediate levels along the way to reward good behaviour or make adjustments if off track. It was all or nothing and that meant nothing. The way we work and interact with our family and friends has changed those of us with strong networks will continue to flourish, however others will feel more isolated and alone. So how about some ‘Feel Good Resolutions’ for our New Year, such as: • Give someone a compliment every day. • A Random Act of Kindness acts of kindness and generosity make the world a better place. • Write down something you are grateful for every day. • Be nice to yourself. • Call a friend or Facetime them - even better. People can fall quickly out of the loop and a call from a friend can reconnect them to the outside. • See the good in everything, negativity destroys our soul. • Go through your wardrobe and Donate Clothes you don’t wear any more – Change Room, Dallas Parade, Keperra. • Volunteer – volunteering is great for your mental and physical health. It connects you with like-minded positive people. So if you have some free time and would you like to meet new people, learn new skills, then give me a call. Volunteers receive much more than they receive. Paul Ryan, email cottontrees@bigpond.com, call 0409 688 675
KINDY CAPERS
News and Views from a Tramway Muse. By David Fryer
‘I'm a tram!’ said Sam. ‘I'm your line-dance ma’am. I move in the groove and clang when I Can-Can.’ D. F. When Reverend W. Awdry, OBE, created Thomas the Tank Engine in the middle of World-War Two, many people thought it was in poor taste. While hundreds were dying every night from indiscriminate Nazi bombing and deadly London smogs, here was a man playing with his toy trains and writing books for children. No-one ever thought his creation would eventually spin into a multi-million pound industry. Today, Thomas may be a tad naff or even sexist for some, but he still managed to become a household name around the world. And who would have thought a public competition to name a £200 million polar research vessel would make prime TV news on the opposite side of the globe? Boaty McBoatface was jokingly suggested by a former BBC radio presenter, but the public loved the idea and it quickly became the most popular choice. The name has been described as a homage to Hooty McOwlface, an owl named through an 'Adopt-aBird' program that became extremely popular on the internet in 2012. Unfortunately, Boaty McBoatface was deemed too frivolous for a serious research vessel by those at the top, but it was too good to waste and it’s now the name of the lead boat in a fleet of autonomous battery–powered mini-submarines. Sadly, Brisbane lacks an equivalent to Thomas the Tank Engine or Boaty McBoatface. However, there are some wonderful vintage trams at the Tramway Museum in Ferny Grove. None have names or faces, but they are well endowed with charm and character and most know how to shake, rattle and roll. The directors are always open to suggestions and eager to please visitors, especially children. So, why not ‘take on a tram’ for your next kindy project? The kids could paint a tram mural with themselves at the windows. What name would they choose for their people parcel? Maybe they could make a clip-on face for the horse-drawn tram, or even a giant traffic-jam tart in red, orange and green for the group visit. Now that would be a visual feast......... © David Fryer. maximalist@bigpond.com The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly sponsored by the Brisbane City Council

This month, we welcome our new columnist Richard Lancaster to the Echo News family. Check out his latest column, and keep your eyes peeled for more to come!
Money.
The likes of Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Dannii Minogue, Matt Damon, George Clooney, Julia Roberts and dozens of others have all effortlessly entered this country, with nary a whisper. When quizzed, politicians use their ease of access as being beneficial to our economy. In other words, its money that is at heart of the matter. Money, so the old saying goes, is the root of all evil. Those words were sung by the Andrews Sisters with their hit song of 1946 and echoed several decades later by ABBA, Pink Floyd and a few others. Whether it comes in paper or plastic notes or coin, money is one of, if not the most powerful force in the lives of most. Early humans developed the barter system to trade goods and services, eventually using spices or even salt as currency. It
was only when some bright spark invented, what we now call money in about 5000BC, that humans started to get serious about money. An Indo/European people, the Lydians, were the first known people to mint their own coinage around 700BC and others like the Romans and Greeks followed. The word money is derived from the Latin `Moneta` meaning mint or money. Moneta was the original name of the Roman goddess Juno, in whose temple Roman coins were minted. There are now 180 known currencies worldwide being used by 195 countries with the British pound being the oldest still in use. The pound dates back to the 8th century. Currently the world’s strongest currency is the Kuwaiti Dinar, followed by the Bahraini Dinar, the Omani Rial and the Jordanian Dinar. The British pound comes in at number 5, with the United States dollar at number 10. The Aussie dollar rates at number 12. The Iranian Real is currently reported to be the world’s weakest currency and joining it at the bottom of the currency heap are the Vietnamese Dong, the Indonesian rupiah, the Guinean Franc and the Laotian Kip. But all that glitters is not always gold, as another saying goes. Since Federal Parliament enacted the Royal Commission Act in 1902, Australia has conducted nearly 140 Royal Commissions. Queensland separately has held over 30. Most of these, have one common denominator at each of their essences. Money or the abuse of it. But since that time, we haven’t listened very carefully to the advice given by the Andrews Sisters in the first verse of their song, which is; Money is the root of all evil, Money is the root of all evil, Won’t contaminate myself with it, Take it away, Take it away, Take it away. Yet again, can we survive without it?

NEW YE AR, N EW YO U Health & Fitness Guide Slowing Down The Ageing Process What You Need To Know! Your 40’s and beyond can be years when you’re just as in shape and active as ever. Whether you’re just entering your 40’s, are well acquainted with them, or can see them in your rearview mirror, you may wonder if there are changes you should be making to your fitness and nutrition routines to optimize your health and feel as fit and vibrant as you'd like. So what is our best shot at slowing down the ageing process? Structured and safe strength training with a bit of fun! Local business Enhance PT is passionate about helping people reach their fitness goals without all of the hype you may find elsewhere. They foster a strictly non-glamour zone where classes are lead by experienced female trainers only. Owner and operator Miranda Pardon uses her age as a selling point. “I’m 51 and not a gym bunny, but that doesn’t mean I’m not fit or strong. I know that some people are reluctant to start an exercise program because they feel intimidated by gyms, mirrors, and those hard-core-type gym images. At Enhance PT we want to change that perception. We’ve been working with the 40+ age group for many years and we’ve found that most people want to come and exercise with real people and with trainers who understand aging bodies.” The 40+ age group can have very specific requirements
www.echo-news.com.au
with exercise prescription. Fitness programs need to be modified to suit age groups and accommodate health issues. Menopause, degenerative bone conditions, vertigo, heart and lung disease are to name just a few. Enhance PT offer small group training so they can provide appropriate supervision with a focus on injury prevention and a maximum of 15 people per class. Movements for everyday life, such as flexibility, balance, functional strength are all incorporated into their programs. Clients can you work at THEIR OWN level and don’t have to worry about keeping up with anyone else. So, if you’re looking to get back into exercise in a safe, social and fun environment , pop along and join the Enhance PT community this January with their 10 for 10 offer - every class for 10 weeks is $10 per class!

N EW YEAR NEW YO U
How About Yoga in 2022?
Do you need to be flexible, young, strong or thin to put your body into amazing shapes? None of the above. All you need is to be able to breathe. New Local Support For Breastfeeding
North West Private Hospital in Everton Park has launched a Lactation Clinic for families seeking breastfeeding support, who have birthed either at North West or another obstetric facility, public or private. Make Yourself Top Priority!
Putting yourself first in body and mind means that you have more to offer to those close to you. At the community minded Fabulous Physical Fun studio, the trainers are eager to encourage an active lifestyle to keep bodies strong and supple. This enables members to carry out their everyday tasks easier, with less strain and injury. Having fitness plans of attending regular classes and sticking to them, will have a flow on effect to other areas of your life. While exercise itself puts a low-level, positive stress on your body, it can be pretty mentally relaxing. It has a beneficial impact on depression and anxiety while relieving stress, improving memory, and gaining better sleep. Through movement you also stimulate the growth of new brain cells, and this helps to prevent age-related decline. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people reinforces your resolve and makes it fun! Members enjoy socialising and sharing ideas, as well as forming new friendships. Everyone at the fitness studio is welcome to join in for a delicious coffee and chat after class, upstairs at the popular Ferny’s Café. It sounds like a win-win situation! One Fabfun member, Judy Thompson, puts herself first by attending many classes each week… ‘The range of classes and available times caters for every ability level to enjoy exercise and keeping fit. The location at Ferny Grove Shopping Village is wonderful with undercover parking and an easy ramp for access. The expertise of the trainers to modify classes to suit individual needs and abilities is much appreciated - and all with a smile and a no fuss approach. Bonnie has developed a culture of inclusive fitness which then develops friendships within the Fabfun community. As someone who had never stepped into a gym and wasn’t keen on the typical machine lined walls in the larger franchised models, this unique fitness studio is a perfect approach to movement. Bonnie is very welcoming, requesting and using client feedback to fine tune the classes to accommodate her ever increasing client base. The Ferny’s Cafe is also convenient for those important after class social catch-ups!’ Why not try a few classes to see what all the fuss is about! Christmas Cake Rush Done n Dusted!
An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association Happy New Year to everyone!
The Christmas rush is over and all those Christmas cakes are most likely all eaten. We enjoyed our Christmas party at the Aspley Hotel and had lots of laughs during our Secret Santa gift exchange. Our ladies made over 190 Christmas cupcakes for the Mitchelton Meals on Wheels clients. A great effort by everyone. Noela and her team were extremely grateful for the donation. We are looking forward to another busy year and really hope that we are all able to continue meeting each month and sharing our knowledge with present and new members alike. After deciding to cancel our January meeting as many of our members were still getting their COVID booster shots, our first meeting for the year is on Saturday 19th February. The meeting will take place at the Arana Hills Community Hall, Dawson Parade at 1.00pm. We love to see new members come along and discover our craft. Check out our Facebook page by searching Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail.com for more information.

Designing Rooms
Sensory patterns are a huge consideration when designing spaces for those living with neurodiversity. But what else needs to be considered?
Creating a living space where loved ones feel able to be their authentic selves is important to most Australian families. But few take that obligation more seriously than Joanne Viney. In 2017, the interior designer’s daughter was diagnosed as being neurodiverse. Twelve months down the track her son was confirmed to be on the autism spectrum and, soon after, Joanne herself was diagnosed. Joanne says neurodiverse individuals - typically associated with diagnoses of Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD, Asperger Syndrome, Autism, Tourette Syndrome or Acquired Brain Injuries (ABI) - are part of a growing population that has previously been ignored in design. Thankfully, more research is now being done with accessible and inclusive design practices starting to be incorporated into design for neurodiversities as well as physical disabilities. Of the firm belief that our physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing are intrinsically linked, Joanne’s own experiences of neurodiversity prompted her to begin focusing on the ways functionality could be improved and how this could bring about improved personal and emotional connections to both her own home and that of her clients. Humans work on seven different senses – Auditory (sound), Tactile (touch), Visual (sight), Vestibular (motion), Olfactory (both smell and taste) and Proprioception (sense of the body’s location). Joanne says neurotypical individuals innately receive, collect
and process information about a space based on all of these senses instantly in a process called sensory integration. This provides a coherent perception of a situation or environment which then allows an individual the chance to make a decision on how to act. For people on the autism spectrum, for example, these senses often lead to an “abnormal” response in terms of sensory information processing, she says. Joanne, who works closely with Occupational Therapists when designing spaces for those living with neurodiversity, says it’s important the liveability of a space is also considered. In designing with this in mind, Joanne says she considers the individual’s challenges and purpose of their spaces, along with their potential for unwanted distractions, sensory stimulation and way-finding. When all is said and done spaces still need to be inspiring, engaging and also easy to navigate, she says. “Beautiful spaces still need to make sense at the end of the day.” The core principles of Inclusive Design Inclusive – so everyone can use it safely, easily and with dignity. Responsive – taking account of what people say they need and want. Convenient – so everyone can use it without too much effort or separation. Accommodating – for all people, regardless of their age, gender, mobility, ethnicity or circumstances. Flexible – so different people can use it in different ways. Welcoming – with no disabling barriers that might exclude some people. Realistic – offering more than one solution to help balance everyone’s needs and recognising that one solution may not work for all. Source:The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. Sweat For Joy And Connection
Ladies - Get Ready to Squat, Shake, Stretch, Box, Bounce, Breathe, Shop, Sip and Socialise on 26th March to make a collective stand against domestic violence.
Sweat Like A Girl is back in 2022, with all funds going towards DV Connect. 10 local fitness businesses have signed on to power women through a sweat-inducing exercise marathon of fitness classes from self-defence to HIIT, yoga to zumba, bootcamp to pilates, run training to jazzercise, boxing to meditation - all connecting to the joy of movement. If sweating isn’t your thing - then you can still support local businesses and connect by checking out the market with over 20 stalls already signed up offering giftware, homeware, health & beauty products, women‘s clothing, active wear and delectable treats. The event is the brainchild of Hills Womens Collective founder Briony O’Connor. Briony founded the group in 2019 with like-minded women who believe that small actions from many can make a difference and are passionate about empowering people in their local community. Having worked as a Physiotherapist for many years Briony, learnt the importance of putting people’s chronic pain in context, often finding that as she started to unpack their stories there was often abuse of some form in their background. She wanted those women to have a voice and be heard, to have a lifeline and that is what organisations like DVConnect provide and why she is passionate about fundraising for them. The concept of putting together an exercise marathon to do this came from a desire to help women find joy in movement in its many forms and to see that we are stronger when we are a collective. Lastly, there is no better feeling than to have a sense of belonging, so creating an event that brings our North West Brisbane community together to support our small businesses through markets and networking was my other driving influence. Women on the Hills. Call up your girlfriends, share a coffee in the morning, a workout or 10 throughout the day, shop to support local small businesses, and know that the price of your ticket has helped support women and families experiencing

The Hills Womens Collective domestic violence. “None of us, including me, ever do great things. But we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.” – Mother Teresa. The event is on Saturday 26th March 2022 at St Williams School, Dawson Parade, Keperra. It’s open to women from 12 years and over. Tickets are $30 for students, $50 for adults. For tickets:, scan the QR Code at the bottom of this article. Hills Women’s Collective would like to acknowledge their local sponsors who are helping this event to be bigger and better this year. Arana Hills Leagues Club as a major sponsor and Harcourts is a Level 2 sponsor. If you’re a local business who would like to get involved and help the group hit their goal of raising more than $10K for DV Connect then you can still donate to the raffle. Dickson & Ryan Candidates Where Are You?
The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce Inc. will be holding a ‘Meet the Candidates’ Forum at their breakfast meeting in the new year. They are working with an approximate timetable that the election will be no later than May 2022, meaning the Forum would most likely be held on March 22, 2022, or a date (to be confirmed) in April 2022. The Chamber are inviting all known candidates for both the Dickson and Ryan electorates to take part. The ‘Meet the Candidates’ forum is an opportunity for chamber members and the wider community to question and hear the responses of candidates standing for election. They aim for a friendly and cooperative atmosphere in which the community can hear political discussion free of overly enthusiastic or disruptive attendees. As always, an experienced chairperson will be present to ensure that a balanced, cordial arena will
provide all candidates with the opportunity to explain why they are offering themselves as candidates. The Chamber are conscious that many things can change in the months leading up to the election, however if you intend to nominate for either electorate and wish to take part, they would be grateful if you could forward your best contact details as well as your intention in principle via return email to Committee Chair, Mr Brian Battersby by mobile on 0418 878 508 or by email advocacy@hillschamber.org.au MEET THE CANDIDATES FORUM: Date: Tuesday, Breakfast Meeting, date to be determined. Gardening
Welcomed Rains and Don’t Delay, Plant Rest for HOG Your Veggies Today! An update from The Hills Organic Garden Club
An update from Mitchelton and Districts Gardening Club All being well, the next meeting of the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club will be on Thursday, 3rd March, at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. The guest speaker, Geoff Robinson, will talk It is really a matter of maintenance over these hotter months. about native plants. It was a welcome relief to receive some good rain and lower temperatures over the Christmas/New Year period. Our garden always thrives so much better on rain water with our Egg Plants and Cucumbers having produced some wonderful crops. The beans have also done reasonably well. Of course, with the rain comes the weeds and the long grass. So, weeding the beds and mowing and whipper snipping have been necessary to keep the garden looking good over the last few weeks. Our members are very proud of their Community Garden and strive to keep it looking tidy and an inviting place to come and work, as well as welcoming visitors who often come down to have a look at our garden. As we do not have much growing at the moment, most of the beds have had a good rest over the hotter months . However, come March we will start fertilising and composting in preparation for our winter planting. This is an exciting time for our members as they choose what they would like to plant around April and ultimately consume when harvest time comes around in August/September. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier, so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Our members meet on Sunday afternoons during the summer months from 3.30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook, or phone 0407 582 980 for information. We look forward to meeting you all!

Ferny Grove Garden Club is looking forward to meeting again on Friday, 25 February 2022, at 1pm. The club meets at St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. The AGM will be held that day and the program for the year will be arranged. Each gathering will consist of the meeting, a speaker on a horticultural topic, afternoon tea and the opportunity to exchange gardening stories. For more information, call the Secretary Elizabeth on 07 3851 0568.
It is regretted that the February meeting had to be cancelled due to the extension of school holidays and the intensity of Covid 19 infection. If you prefer to grow your vegetables, don't delay with preparation for the winter ones such as beetroot, carrot, turnip, parsnip, celery, silver beet, zucchini, egg plant, cauliflower, broccoli and pumpkin, to mention a few. There's no need to have a particular area for each one, They can be grown in the same garden, even with flowers, and this confuses the insects that lay eggs on the vegetable leaves. Humid conditions and lots of rain make it necessary for gardeners to spend time mowing and weeding which is a never ending job. Meetings commence about 10 a.m. after morning tea which is served at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheelchair. For more information, please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

Turning a love of the outdoors into a career An Arana Hills swimming teacher and former national-level figure skater is turning her love of outdoor adventure into a career with a Bachelor of Recreation and Outdoor Environmental Studies from USC. Lauren Tasker, who graduated at a recent ceremony at USC Stadium, has lined up six months of back-to-back freelance outdoor education work across regional Queensland. And after that, the 22-year-old Ferny Grove State High School graduate intends to study Honours at USC to research the movement of saltwater crocodiles in the Wenlock River on Cape York Peninsula. ‘Understanding the territorial movement patterns by homeranging male crocodiles may help to limit negative humanwildlife conflict,’ said Lauren, whose degree electives included Sports Studies, Animal Ecology and Geography. Her current outdoor education work started at Girraween National Park near Stanthorpe. ‘I’m heading every direction northward, working with different organisations, businesses and centres on their ventures facilitating groups on outdoor expeditions,’ she said. ‘Some of these trips involve base camping or moving on to somewhere new every day – sometimes I'm island-hopping, sometimes following a river and waterfalls. I’ll be guiding groups of people on the Carnarvon Gorge Great Walk and the Wet Tropics Great Walk. ‘It will provide me with information on what outdoor education work I enjoy the most.’ Lauren, who does gymnastics, hiking, climbing, swimming and
Lauren on one of her many outdoor adventures biking, said she chose USC because it was the only university in the state with an outdoor-specific degree and a wide choice of electives. Lauren collected and analysed real data from Heron Island, K’gari and Conondale National Park, and led groups of peers through Mount Barney National Park portals and Cooloola National Park. ‘Longer term, I’ll look at postgraduate study in either secondary education or researching how we as humans recreationally use national parks, the ecological and economic effects, and what we can do both governmentally and socially to improve our recreation and national park conservation understanding and standards.’

~ Vale Ray Tozer ~ 1950 - 2021 A True Local Gent Will Be Missed
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of our longest standing advertisers - Ray Tozer from Everton Mechanical Repairs. Ray sadly passed away in December after a battle with Cancer. Over the years Ray had made many friends, including his customers, with his trademark kindness, compassion, honesty and reliability. He loved that he could help people resolve their issues with their vehicles as well as being a person they could chat to when running them to and from the station, Brookside or their home. Thanks to wife Fran Tozer, we have a little bit to share about his wonderful life in her words...... Ray was the youngest of five children to May and Bill Tozer. Born in a home near Kondalilla Falls, near Montville, the family relocated to Aspley. Ray began his school life at Geebung State School and moved onto Aspley High School, where he decided to do his trade as a mechanic. He then started work as an apprentice to the Brisbane City Council at Light Street Depot in the Valley, working on the old Leopards and Panthers. Every step of the way, he made lifelong friends. Sometime after that, they were moved to the Council depot on Newmarket Road where he worked on a variety of council work trucks and vehicles. Ray was conscripted into National Service so in 1970, he was duly sent off to Singleton for the initial training. He was then sent to Holsworthy Barracks in Liverpool where he worked on the Armoured Personnel Carriers. During this time, he and other ‘nasho’s’ as they were called, were expected to train the Regular Army personnel, yet they received less in the way of wages even though they were qualified mechanics ( in case, he hadn’t received the official notification). In an effort to change their situation he and a few others went to their commanding officer but nothing eventuated. At this point, they decided they were going to see the local MP. Shortly afterwards, they got the increase they had asked for but all the stirrers were sent off to other posts. Some of the lucky ones were sent to Bulimba in Brisbane (miles from their own homes), Ray on the other hand, got Kapooka, in Wagga Wagga. We married in September 1972 and bought a small home in the Gap where we resided for 19 years before building a new house in Kings Park, Keperra where we lived for the following 30 years. Our children Ben and Emma came along in 1978 and 1980 and the following year we bought the BP Wilston, on Newmarket Road.

Five years later Ray started working for Roy and Judy Thomas at BP Ferny Grove, as their mechanic along with colleague Simon. After managing the site, Ray and Simon built a reputation as being a reliable, trustworthy, honest and all round good blokes. Ray then decided along with Simon, to buy their own workshop, Ray Tozer starting at the already existing Everton Mechanical Repairs which was quite run down but it enabled them to buy into it. They moved to larger premises a few years later, having outgrown the initial workshop. Ray was still committed to providing the best service he could to all his customers, those who had found him after leaving other places and new people who were coming to him through word of mouth. Ray loved his two kids, grandkids, including many extras over the years, and they in turn gave him much pleasure and joy, returning the love threefold. In addition, Ray was a true dog lover and nothing relaxed him as much as lying on the floor with his last two boxers, Bella and Blaze, after a hard day’s work. Ray’s cancer diagnosis two years ago was already considered stage four. He put great faith in what the doctors and staff could do for him but it was a very aggressive form of bowel cancer and the chemo was the strongest they could give him. He fought his diagnosis with strength and determination. For most of this year, we had been enjoying just companionably sitting on our verandah, Ray playing on his iPad (mahjong or solitaire) and me too, as he just liked being at home, Surrounded by his birds, listening to his redwings that had bred successfully over many years, or the cockatoos and corellas he loved to feed, as well as the occasional king parrots, and naturally the magpies and butcher birds. We also had many other visitors on the verandah over the years, a regular carpet snake on the bird feeder or on one of his snake proof birdcages. So close we could touch them but could never quite bring ourselves to do so! And possums. The last few weeks of his life got more and more difficult once it was decided another operation was out of the question. And yet he still tried to go to work, even with severe jaundice. Music was his solace, particularly ‘Time to say Goodbye’ with Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman, once he got home. In actual fact he loved a wide variety of music but once a song got in his head, I could hear him arriving home, it was often the same song for weeks until the next old favourite came up, lately "Rambunctious Boy” by John Fogarty. Someone told me many years ago that Ray was like a little lump of coal. I always thought of him as my rock; loving, kind, genuine, honest, funny, hard working, stable, set in his ways, a creature of habit. We had our tough times too, but always came out the other side. He will be greatly missed but can now Rest In Peace. The Hills Echo, February 2022 - Page 27
Qld Choir’s 150th Anniversary Call For Singers
As it gears up for its 150th anniversary this year, one of Australia’s longest-established choirs, the Queensland Choir, is calling for singers to join in its celebratory concert season. ‘Every year since it was established in 1872, the Queensland Choir has issued an annual call for new choristers to join the choir, and this year is no exception, with three major concerts planned to celebrate the anniversary,’ the Queensland Choir’s artistic director Kevin Power says. ‘Concert details are still being finalised but the first performance for the year – a light-hearted Choral Celebration of the choir’s history, will be held in Brisbane City Hall on Sunday May 8 as the opening concert of this year's 4MBS Festival of Classics. The Queensland Choir are this year's 4MBS Artists in Residence. ‘A Choral Celebration will present highlights of the choir’s history and some amusing anecdotes from its past and will feature some music that is rarely heard these days, along with more familiar pieces by Handel, Haydn, Grainger and others, all accompanied by the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra. ‘The Queensland Choir has made a significant contribution to Queensland’s cultural life since its foundation in pre-federation days, when Queensland was a remote colony and the only way audiences could hear music was to attend live performances, as there was no radio or recordings, let alone TV or TikTok. ‘The Queensland Choir has provided enjoyment and education for a wide range of audiences throughout its existence, employment for orchestras and Brisbane-based soloists who’ve performed with the choir in concert, and encouragement for young singers by giving them the opportunity to sing solo and in the choir,’ Mr Power says.
‘We’ve entertained audiences in venues ranging from suburban town halls and community centres to Brisbane’s major concert halls, and the choir has sung at the opening of many of them, including Brisbane City Hall, QPAC, St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Old Museum Building. It has also performed at many significant historic events over the years, including fundraising concerts for the war effort and for disaster relief, Royal visits, thanksgiving services at the end of WW1 and WW2 and at Anzac Day services. ‘Singing in a choir is serious but also great fun, and as well as improving your musical and vocal skills, it boosts your social life, helps beat the blues by releasing endorphins which lower stress and anxiety levels, and beats going to the gym by increasing energy levels and working out muscles in the upper body. “The choir would welcome additional singers in all sections for this year’s special anniversary program. Anyone interested in singing with the choir should contact us ASAP as auditions will be held at the end of January and early February. Auditions are by appointment only, and full details are available on the Choir’s website, www.qldchoir.com. or by contacting the Choir at enquiriesqldchoir.com or call 0491 682 552
Samford Under The Stars Set To Take The Spotlight
Preparations for events in 2022 are continuing in Moreton Bay with planning underway to bring back one of Samford’s family-favourite events after the expected peak of the Omicron COVID-19 strain.
Whip out the picnic blanket, put on your dancing shoes and bring your best singing voice for the expected return of Music Under the Stars at the Samford Showgrounds on the 12th February. After a one-year hiatus due to wet weather, council’s much-loved event would look to be back at the Samford Showgrounds with a bumper lineup of music to get the whole family grooving along with good food, artisan markets and fun activities for the young and young-at-heart. The gold-coin event will be headlined by Rumours the Australian Fleetwood Mac Experience who will perform inter-generational hits like Dreams and Landslide, together with performances from emerging indie-reggae rock band Lucid Safari, Angel Strings Quartet and acoustic artist Amy Kate. Running from 4pm-8pm, there would be plenty on offer for hungry tummies, with indulgent food trucks set to line the showgrounds. Families are welcomed and the event will also mark the return of the popular night-time markets complete with handmade, local and sustainable designs and wares. So mark your calendar for a night under the stars, and be sure to say G’day to the show society who will also be running a bar for the four-hour event. Looming Showtime for our Gem Enthusiasts An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club
The opening of the Gem Club Workshop has been delayed due to the Covid 19 situation. The club will be opening from February 10th (Thursday session) from 9am to noon for Lapidary work and noon to 3pm for Silverwork enthusiasts. We also have a Saturday afternoon session for Lapidary from 1pm to 4pm. The Clubrooms are situated at 40-46 Ferneydell Street, Ashgrove, and there is plenty of parking in the street. There are a variety of diamond saws in the workshop from four inch up to 24 inch, which members may use during the workshop sessions. The workshop also includes diamond grinders, polishers, flat laps and faceting machines. A nominal fee is charged for a workshop session and for cutting on the diamond saws an additional fee of 10 cents per square inch. Club members are looking forward to the Gem Shows this year that various Clubs organise around the State and in the immediate surrounds of Brisbane. The Gem Show scene has been very quiet since the arrival of Covid-19 in 2020. Gem Shows are a mix of displays by Club members, Traders selling Lapidary equipment, etc. and ‘tailgaters’. Tailgaters are individual members who want to dispose of their excess gemstone material and pay for a site at these Gem Shows to do that. These Gem Shows are generally advertised in Lapidary magazines. There is one at Aspley State Primary School on 5th and 6th March. Other Shows will be held at Mudgeeraba, Ipswich, Caboolture, and Beenleigh later in the year. Tailgaters sell a variety of gemstone material as well as other items, such as lapidary machinery, mineral and fossils. It is a good source of buying ‘hard to get’ material. The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club does not hold a show due to a lack
of a suitable venues in the local area. If you require more information about the Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club Inc. please contact John on 33511038 or Lloyd on 33512093. New members are welcome.

Myths Abound In Publishing. Print Books Are Alive And Well
By Carolyn Martinez Myths abound in publishing include; Print books are dead and young people are leading the charge to killing off print books.
Contrary, Publishers Weekly reports that 18-34 year olds are leading the charge away from digital devices. Brisbane author Bryn Smith, who pens the gritty sci-fi awardwinning Magnus Nights’ series, agrees. 29-year-old Smith encourages his peers to read print books to thwart algorithms. ‘Reading used to have a monopoly on our entertainment time—except for the odd theatre show and public execution,’ Smith said. ‘Today, books compete with so many things for our time. There’re movies, Netflix, podcasts, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. People have invested a lot of money and Carolyn Martinez’s daughter, Kitty, steps in for technology in these platforms to the camera shy owner of get us hooked and to keep our A Lot of Books in Ipswich. eyes on their screens.’ When was the last time you ‘The problem is these platforms browsed in a bookstore? do not feed your soul and your mind. They feed an algorithm that gives you more of the same and builds a safe little echo chamber. But modern media’s desire to give us a unique, personal experience has a chilling side effect—it separates us. Books however give us a common, shared experience that brings us together.’ Storytelling is the backbone of community; a fundamental driver of a happy life. The ability to live multiple lives through the pages of books is one of the reasons I’ve dedicated my life to producing great books. Books bring us together, and they challenge us with new knowledge, new people and new ideas. We incorporate this into ourselves and become a fuller person than we were yesterday. Books make us more human. One of the biggest publishing stories out of the United States last year was the decision by the U. S. Department of Justice to block Penguin Random House’s $2.18 billion acquisition of Simon & Schuster. The U. S. Department of Justice contended that the purchase would harm top-selling authors by reducing the number of publishers able to bid on the most popular authors, thereby reducing author earnings, and ultimately hurting consumers whose choice would be narrowed—funnelled into ever tightening algorithms. Bookstores are as essential as hospitals and roads. I’m passionate about preserving our libraries and physical bookstores in Australia. I believe they are just as essential as roads and drainage, hospitals and education. When was the last time you made a morning of it to visit your local library or quaint bookstore? Undoubtedly, digital and audio books are a valued addition to the storytelling landscape but as Smith suggests let’s not accept them being our only avenue for discovery or we’ll find ourselves mere robots for algorithms. www.echo-news.com.au

Cans for Change By Lawrey Goodrich
A super funny story about recycling that your boys will love!
Synopsis: Daniel Jeffries knows cars. More importantly, he knows his dad’s car, a 1970 Ford XW Falcon GT, his dad’s pride and joy. Daniel helped restore it. But then his dad became obsessed with recycling. Now the GT is a GT – oh no! To have a dump for a backseat is the worst. Especially when the school bully discovers Daniel. The flies… The filth… The funk… Will Daniel’s reputation be rusted or restored? Brisbane-based Lawrey Goodrick is an author/illustrator, and a long-term foster carer. With over ten years experience fostering children he knows the importance of exploring the nuances in human relationships, and sprinkling stories with belly laughs so kids connect. Cans for Change explores what happens when Daniel is mortified as he is seen by the school bully just as his bindiving, can-recycling dad pops his head out of an industrial bin. Daniel takes off in his dad’s car, pretending he doesn’t even know him! The ensuing adventure revolves around a surprising police officer with a megaphone, a trip to the recycling station, an encounter with zombies, a tender moment with his dad, and a showdown of all showdowns with the school bully. Look out for Lawrey Goodrick driving around the Brisbane region in his work ute. He tells us there are only a handful of takeaway drive-thrus that he’s too tall for but finding out the hard way the first time was so embarrassing that he almost felt like Daniel, the lead character in Cans for Change, and considered fleeing the scene of the bang. Luckily all life-size characters remained largely intact. Cans for Change is available direct through Brisbane publisher hawkeyebooks.com.au, and all good bookstores and libraries. Contact Hawkeye Publishing if you want Lawrey Goodrich’s team for a drama and illustration workshop at your school.

Reach Your Resolutions in 2022
Pop down and visit the friendly faces that make up the Nest Community
New Year’s Resolutions are traditionally made in the last hours of December 31 and, for many people, are abandoned before January ends.
If your resolution this year was to live more sustainably, spend more time outdoors, grow your own food, learn a new skill, meet new people, or give back to your community, The Nest Community can help ease your February guilt. The Nest Community is a house on a hill at 720 South Pine Road. It’s a volunteer run community organisation with the aim of creating social connection through sustainability and skill sharing. The community now has around 100 volunteers who work in the haberdashery thrift shop, tend the garden and chickens, and teach sustainable craft workshops. Managing director and co-founder Roz Fenson said in 2022 The Nest Community is looking to create more connection through their program of workshops. ‘One of our most popular classes is our ‘Learn to Sew’ session which takes people through the basics of using their sewing machine and how to make their own clothes or household items,’ Roz said. ‘This year we’re adding ‘Advance your Sewing Skills’ for those who have mastered the basics and are looking to do more. ‘We’re actually raffling everything you need to get started making your own items – a sewing machine, sewing and crochet classes, and a voucher for our own Nest Haberdashery.’ The Nest Haberdashery sells donated fabric, sewing machines and notions, as well as yarn, knitting needles and embroidery supplies. Keen crafters can join The Nest Haberdashery Facebook group for a preview of new items in store. ‘Last year we received more than 290 kilos of donated fabric and craft supplies which we have diverted from landfill. It all gets sorted and checked by our wonderful haberdashery volunteers ready to be turned into new things,’ Roz explained. In 2022, The Nest Community will offer workshops in the basics of sewing, crochet, knitting, embroidery and quilting, as well as more advanced skills such as upcycling clothes, shibori tie dye, coil basket making, and the very popular rag rugs. There will also be kokedama workshops for gardening enthusiasts. ‘Because The Nest is about social connection and skill sharing, our workshop and haberdashery prices are low. We rerun our popular classes throughout the year so more people can get involved,’ Roz said. Upcoming workshops can be booked through Humanitix at https://bit.ly/thenestworkshops. Tickets for the Handmade Living raffle are available from https://bit.ly/handmadelivingraffle.

Upper Kedron Hall in Cedar Creek Road. Circa 1900
The Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. (EDHS) has had a tough few years. School Days Recollections at Bunya School
An update from the Samford Museum
The Bunya School
In the early years of the 20th century, several families from today’s Hills district attended Bunya School.
When Bunya school closed in 1920 due to low numbers, two Bunya families were taken and collected by their fathers driving horse and buggy to Grovely School - later known as Mitchelton School. Other families commented in their reminiscences recorded in Bunya School 1875-1965 by Melva A Welch, they attended Albany Creek School during the Bunya School closure. An idea to leave and return home at times corresponding with school came undone when a police truancy officer who rode out from Newmarket caught up with the boys and escorted them to school, where they attended regularly until Bunya reopened in 1926. At this time Jack Caesar transferred from Mitchelton School to Bunya - possibly to help reach the required numbers of pupils. For only a few months, children of a family dairy farming next to where Bunya Park used to be crossed the South Pine River to attend Bunya School. Even though Bunya was ‘in the bush,’ the school was central for families from all directions. The delayed 2022 school year has some similarities to 1932. Then, children under 10 years were debarred from attending owing to the prevailing epidemic of infantile paralysis (polio). By February 24, 1932 the I P Campaign Committee decided that public schools should remain closed to children under 12 until March 14. Owen Benn
WW2 Veteran | Private, The Australian Army Owen Benn was born in Toowoomba, Queensland in April 1920 and spent his early years on a mixed farm property in Cambooya called ‘Newberry’. He joined the Australian Infantry after getting ‘itchy feet’ to leave the farm and because simply ‘we were at war’. Owen’s three brothers soon followed him with 2 serving in the navy and one in the air force.’
Claude Malone
Vietnam Veteran | Sapper, The Australian Army
Claude Malone grew up in Cherbourg, Queensland, volunteered for the Army in 1968 and served until 1974. He was told that the war in Vietnam would be over by the time he finished his training, but this proved wrong. Claude spent time as a tunnel rat in Vietnam and remembers being sent into the darkness with a torch and a .45 which he called a ‘peashooter.’ Unfortunately Claude’ health was severely affected by Agent Orange and in later life he has had knee, hip and shoulder replacements as well as arthritis in his joints.
Terry Walker
WW2 Veteran | Trooper, Royal Hassars (RH) British Artillery Soldier
Terry Walker was born in Secunderabad, India in November 1923. He enlisted at Aldershot, England on the 30th May 1938 in the Calvary of the Line as a bugler. Terry was the colloquial “Ten Pound Pom,” arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia in 1957 before moving to Redcliffe, Queensland. Terry was instrumental in the construction of the Botanical Gardens in Redcliffe and was a founding member of the local Lapidary Club. Terry passed away in February this year.

THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove
Demolition at Mitchie Special School in early January.
Mitchie Special School Upgrade The demolition work on the old admin building at Mitchie Special School is now complete. The new building and the refurbishment of some of the existing learning areas will be finalised later this year – weather permitting. In recent times Mitchie Special School’s student numbers were close to exceeding its space so the construction of new facilities was a must. In 2020 the Palaszczuk Government allocated $9 million to ensure the school would have the facilities it needs. This investment is just a small part of the $60 million injection of funding the Queensland Government has made into our local school infrastructure in the past few years – with more to come. Last year Mitchie Special School marked it’s fiftieth year with some celebratory cake, a BBQ and the opening of the school time capsule. With this new construction, Mitchie Special School will continue to serve our community in important ways for many years to come. Volunteers Needed! Mitchelton Meals on Wheels is looking for new volunteers! Do you have a few hours free each week or fortnight? Are you interested in supporting your local community? Come join the amazing team of volunteers at Mitchelton Meals on Wheels! MMOW Volunteers at a previous years Sausage Sizzle What is an Aussie week-end without the waft of onions and the traditional sausage in bread from your local Bunnings store?
Be sure to pop along to the Mitchelton Meals on Wheels (MMOW) sausage sizzle at Bunnings Keperra on Saturday, 19 March, 2022 to help with this major fund raising opportunity. It’s a ‘win win’ opportunity for local residents to support our essential, not-for- profit service, as you enjoy a tasty snack and Mitchelton Meals and Wheels benefit from your patronage! This wonderful community organisation relies on the generosity of the community to continue providing high quality service to their clients. Currently MMOW are in desperate need for new volunteers. As Michelle Duncan, Community Development Officer at Meals on Wheels North West, explains, it’s only through the support of their amazing volunteers that they are able to deliver ‘more than just a meal’. ‘Not only do we deliver delicious and nutritious fresh meals to our clients, our volunteers also offer a friendly face and conversation. Sadly, for many clients, our volunteers are
the only people they’ll see on a daily/weekly basis. This is particularly true at the moment, with many of our clients isolating themselves as much as possible in order to keep safe with the increased number of COVID-19 cases,’ explained Michelle. ‘We are urgently seeking new volunteers to help deliver this vital service. By volunteering for just a few hours each week or fortnight, our volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of vulnerable folks living in our community.’ If you would like to volunteer, please call (07) 3354 3919 or follow MMOW on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ mealsonwheelsmitchelton Plus don’t forget to pop into Bunnings on 19 March and pick up a sausage either on your way in, or out, or both!
Spring Cleaning Tip
Clear a blocked drain with one cup of bicarb soda and two cups of vinegar. Pour the bicarb soda down the drain then pour the vinegar on top. Watch as the the bicarb soda and vinegar bubbles and gurgles. Leave for 15 minutes then pour a jug full of boiling hot water down the sink. Your sink will smell fresh again. This process might need to be repeated if the sink is still blocked. Special Tip: add some of your favourite essential oils. Happy Spring Cleaning
Are you looking for a fun, easy and rewarding way to help within the community? Meals on Wheels Mitchelton is looking for volunteers to help within the kitchen and deliver meals.
All it takes is a few hours of your time once a week. In sharing your smile, along with a little of your time, you will make a lasting difference to the life of a homebound individual. To learn more about volunteer opportunities contact office@mitmow.org.au or call 3354 3919

My perfect day would start with me waking up in my dream bedroom with the softest bedsheets and the comfiest pillow. My dream room would have space over in one corner for my favourite books and a big blue velvet beanbag. In another corner it would have a space for all my toys and jewellery. Smack Eva bang in the middle of my room would be a giant TV playing my favourite music. When I would get out of bed, I would go to my colour sorted wardrobe and I would pick out my perfect outfit. My perfect outfit would be a navy and white jumpsuit with glossy white sandals, fluffy light pink backpack and my hair done in a high ponytail. Once I put on my perfect outfit, I would have breakfast. My breakfast would feature a fried egg on buttery toast with crispy bacon. After breakfast, I would invite all my friends to the beach with me where we would have an incredible beach party with a giant snack table with watermelon, grapes, chocolate covered strawberries, chips and more. It would be so delicious! My beach party would also include a drink table with slushies, iced tea, water, cordial and soft drink. My friends and I would go swimming in the cool water, we would make a giant sandcastle, eat food, have drinks and party all day long to music. When I would get home from the beach party it would be pretty late in the afternoon, so to finish off my perfect day I would climb into my soft bed with my pyjamas on and watch my favourite show to end my perfect day. Who am I kidding you don’t need these things for a perfect day, you just need your friends and family and possibly a beach party.

Dickson News Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson
A Message from Peter Happy New Year! I hope you were able to enjoy a holiday or a break over the holidays and are ready for the year ahead. The school term is underway, and I wish local students all the best for the year ahead. A special mention goes to those students entering Year 12 for their final year or beginning their schooling in Prep, I wish you the best of luck and every success. While it has been a challenging few months living with COVID, our high vaccination rates have helped protect many Australians from serious illness or hospitalisation. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the latest jobs figures demonstrate the strength and resilience of the Australian economy and how the government’s response has saved lives and livelihoods. Our unemployment rate nationally is now down to 4.2% - the lowest it has been since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. 65,000 jobs were created in the month of December and two thirds of these are full time positions. Please get in touch if there is anything I can do to help or any local issues you’d like to raise. Peter

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Procrastination
In the words of a client “why do I put off and put off something I know I must do until I run out of time or simply don’t do it and make matters worse? All the time I am putting it off I am feeling guilt, anxiety and frustration; so I don’t get anything out of the time I get putting the task off. Also I am not nice to be around while I am doing this.” That is procrastination and in recent years a lot of research has been done into this very common human behaviour. We all do it in varying degrees over tasks and time. How big a problem it is to us is a matter of frequency and degree. Do we delay but eventually get it done or is there some task area that we continually delay to our detriment, or do our delaying tactics and feeling of task aversion occur with such regularity that it interferes with our relationships, work, the achievement of goals and the functioning of our daily lives. When we want to change any behaviour the two most basic questions are “Why do we do it?” and “How do I change?” Tim Psychl PhD, a world renowned researcher and author in this field runs a series of pod casts “I Procrastinate” which gives more insight and depth as to the whys, wherefores and strategies involved in the management of this behaviour. In the next couple of articles I draw on this series as well as general and anecdotal life experience. Firstly defining a behaviour is important because it focuses our attention on what it is about the behaviour that makes it essentially different from other similar behaviours. For instance we can unnecessarily judge ourselves as procrastinators and feel frustrated because we have not accomplished intended tasks due to the need to put the task off because something else more important has happened. Because our original task was delayed does not mean we have procrastinated. Procrastination “involves irrational delay on our intention to act now. It has both thinking (cognitive) and feeling (affective) components. The irrational cognitive component is driven by such commonly recognisable thoughts as “I will be better able to do it tomorrow’; ‘I will have more time next week’, or “work better under pressure”. Thoughts like this have a ring of self justifying excuses. There is no clear or real reason as to why we should delay as compared to a situation where you had tasked yourself to clean the garage but the dog got a tick and you had to take it to the vet. With self reflection and awareness the above
Page 40 - February 2022, The Hills Echo
irrational thoughts can be recognised as cues to initiate better self regulating behaviours. Irrational delaying thoughts are proceeded by an affective response of a combination of feelings of guilt, anxiety, frustration etc. These in turn are triggered by another set of irrational thoughts that fall into three different categories. 1. We are more than competent to do a task, but we are fearful about the outcome so we delay and delay and delay. 2. This is about task structure, we delay because we don’t fully understand what the task requires of us to complete it. 3. The idea that we work better under pressure has been proven through many studies to be false. None of this is rocket science, you will have experienced most of what is discussed here. Research studies are often about validating what we already know. But what the research can do is draw our attention to the component behaviours and their rationale (or irrationale as the case may be). Breaking down the parts allows greater understanding and enables us to work out strategies that enable behavioural change. Next month’s article will explore number 1. Procrastination due to fears about tasks competency and strategy to support you in managing that.

Emotional Eating
This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry. This month she talks about Emotional Eating.
So common and so frustrating at the same time!
Just when we started our new diet to get on the health train, the fridge is calling us… When we emotionally eat, it typically can be the result of uncomfortable feelings such as stress, frustration, disagreement with someone close to us, or even a form of procrastination. Currently, we are in a unique time of uncertainty; rules are continuously changing, there is fear of the unknown, job insecurity, unsafe feelings toward going out, and so on. This turmoil is resulting in increased stress, fatigue and anxiety. We all experience stress differently, and find different coping strategies, but for some people (guilty as charged) food can be of comfort – so pass that wheel of cheese! Emotional eating can be known as stress eating, comfort eating, binge eating, and can be a reinforced negative cycle. When in this cycle, you are triggered by something that makes you uncomfortable, so to deal with this negative affect state and help us control our emotions – we reach for food that makes us feel safe. Our body typically craves foods that are high in fat and salt, or high in sugar and processed. Yum, right? While this gives us an immediate satisfaction and we feel satisfied, this can lead to negative relationship with food, then the implications of our body image, then sometimes self-loathing
Counselling Corner
that we feel unable to control our impulses. Oh, and then there are frustrations because we do not know how to change or comfort ourselves in any other way. So first, let’s investigate some reasons. This could have been reinforced during childhood when parents used a reward for good behaviour (lollies, chocolate). That leads to a compulsion to eat all the food on your plate even if you are full, then reward yourself with something sweet. When someone is worried or upset, sometimes food can be a distraction, so you are not left alone with those uncomfortable feelings. This can fall hand in hand with denial (which is a coping mechanism to keep us emotionally safe). If we distract ourselves with food, then we don’t have to think about what is really going on. It could also be a replacement addiction habit, such as smoking. When we have smoke breaks, we remove ourselves from the situation and engage in hand-mouth movement. This is reinforced as comfort and safety. When we stop smoking, how else do we feel safety and comfort? Additionally, when we are anxious, stressed and overwhelmed, the pantry looks like a good idea. This is also self-sabotaging behaviour known as procrastination… That dirty P word! If this is not considered problematic for you, then no judgement – you do you, honey! The problem can arise when this behaviour is ingrained and we feel we are powerless to change, even when we are trying to become the opposite. What are the solutions? Firstly, learning to self soothe and self-regulate. Obviously, this can be impossible if we don’t know what it is or it has never been modelled to us (talk to a therapist). Self-sabotaging behaviours such as procrastinating, understanding why we are sabotaging, and how we can talk ourselves through it with confidence and self-belief. Mindful eating is huge (look at YouTube), this goes hand in hand with emotional intelligence – steps are understanding what has triggered us, why has it caused us to retreat into the fridge, evaluate if we are hungry, or just escaping emotions. This way, we can find new solutions on how to calm ourselves. This process is a way of meeting our emotional needs. Breathing and meditation can help with reducing anxiety when we feel overwhelmed, and this can then be a replacement habit. When you are feeling overwhelmed, you can replace this with an activity you enjoy, such as walking, reading, watching a movie, dancing, talking to mates, and playing with pets. Get organised with meal prep! If you feel that you are an emotional eater who can’t yet escape its grips, cut up & pre-prepare foods you enjoy to snack on that are healthy, like carrot sticks, cheese, nuts, boiled eggs, olives and your other faves! Your new golden rule is to have a healthy relationship with food to take the pressure off (reduce guilt and self-loathing). Give yourself the best chance at success, get organised, and take back control. Embrace setbacks with judgement and move forward with your best interests in mind.
Do you know that if you text 0477 13 11
14 between 6pm - midnight when you are in need of support, a trained Lifeline crisis support worker will text with you? So if you are feeling overwhelmed or having difficulty coping, please drop them a text. They listen without judgement and provide a safe space to discuss your needs, worries or concerns. They will also work with you to explore options for support. www.echo-news.com.au
