Celebrating 30 Years of Success

Nobody imagined that thirty years after conception, The Hills Echo would still retain its popularity as a community newsmagazine in The Hills District and surrounds.

It all began in January 1992 when the very first Hills Echo edition rolled off the printing presses in Warwick and bussed its way to Ferny Hills. Those were the days of light tables, wax guns, photocopiers to increase/reduce logos and layout sheets. Yes, it was typeset on a computer, but ads were made up individually - printed out and then pasted into the blank boxes left vacant on the typeset page. It was hot work, bent over the light table wielding the hot wax gun in the middle of a Brisbane summer! Full colour was only a dream as it involved specialised film to be made by a graphics company which incurred added production costs. Instead, spot colour was available and the first edition boasted two spot colours - red and yellow. Each spot colour required a clear acetate overlay over the layout sheet and precise, fiddly placement to ensure the “colour” stayed within the black lines beneath. That light table was so very important! The Hills Echo commenced at the beginning of desktop publishing when computers replaced hot metal type. But the predecessor of The Hills Echo started in a more primitive fashion. The Advisor was the first community publication in the Hills District. With local historian Melva Welch as its Editor and chief organiser, The Advisor was produced by the two local Progress Associations - The Arana Hills Progress Association and The Ferny Hills Progress Association. All work was voluntary from the writing of The very first 1992 edition of The Hills Echo - January 1992 articles, sale of advertising, printing and distribution.

www.echo-news.com.au

The Hills Echo, January 2022 - Page 3

Celebrating 30 Years of Success The final product was a collection of stories and advertising printed on different sized and coloured paper and held together by a staple in one corner. It was printed on a spirit print press where the handle was turned for each page of copy. Volunteers assembled once a month to print, collate and staple The Advisor all ready for distribution. Further volunteers would collect their copies and distribute their allotted area. Whenever newcomers settled in The Hills District they would be visited by a greeter who would welcome them to the local area, answer any questions and leave them a Welcome Pack which always included the latest copy of The Advisor. But all good things come to an end eventually. Volunteers became scarce and more and more people were discovering The Hills District as a great place to live. The President of the Arana Hills Progress Association, Bruce Smith sought the assistance of a local publications company, R.P.K. Publications, who agreed to typeset The Advisor and print it professionally. The Advisor changed its format to an A4 magazine with spot colour and centre staples. The Progress Associations were still in control of the writing of articles and sale of advertising. This arrangement continued for some time until once again, the scarcity of volunteers saw The Advisor run at a loss and its final edition was printed and distributed in December 1991. Roger and Lyn Fryer, owners of R.P.K. Publications, recognised the benefits of a local community newsmagazine and saw the potential for further growth and success. While on a family holiday over that Christmas period, they planned, costed and devised schedules which saw the birth of The Hills Echo. The January 1992 first edition of The Hills Echo was 24 pages in A4 size, printed on 40 gram newsprint. The same format as The Advisor but with a new masthead and layout. The print

Continued from page 3

run was 3,500 which covered the whole of The Hills District plus Ferny Grove. The sale of advertising supported the cost of production and the distribution was done professionally into letterboxes and businesses. Thirty years later, The Hills Echo print run is now 14,500 copies, covering an almost identical area and is now owned by Katie Maclean of MAC Group Publications Pty Ltd - a local independent publisher. The paper still retains a very local flavour and has continued to conquer many local hearts within the Hills District and surrounding suburbs. Furthermore, to keep up to the times, The Hills Echo is now a multi media platform, comprising print and digital media including a popular website (www.echo-news.com.au), social media, and enewsletter. In addition, she now also has three sibling publications - The Everton Echo, The Eatons Echo and Acreage Living lifestyle magazine. Back issues of The Hills Echo can be found in the Arana Hills Library and the State Library. They provide a walk through the history of The Hills District, showcasing developments, politicians and achievements of many talented citizens. It is the only local newsmagazine now servicing this community and its popularity continues to grow with constant contributions from local groups, loyal advertisers and readers. THANK YOU to our wonderful local community for embracing and supporting our much-loved Hills Echo. From local businesses who advertise with us, to local residents who send in their stories, to our loyal readers, who continue to pick up The Hills Echo and support us each month! Stay tuned as we have so much planned for the next year - after all we aren’t just surviving - we are thriving! Happy 30th birthday Hills Echo!

Brookside’s Sweet Secret

Brookside Shopping Centre’s rooftop is a-buzz with excitement with the harvest of the first pot of honey from its resident bee hives taking place last month.

With bees playing a critical role in preserving ecological balance, along with acting as an integral part of the wider ecosystem, the team at Brookside were keen to introduce the bee hives to the area. Through pollination, bees have an impact of many parts of the environment, but particularly on the growth of crops, flowers, and plants. Not only is it helping to strengthen the bee population, but is assisting to pollinate suburban gardens around the shopping centre’s trade area. The beehives are managed by the centre’s very own Brook News Nextra Newsagent, Mr Stephen Bird. Brookside’s Centre Manager, Mr Russell said that with Stephen’s support and guidance, they were able to proceed with the environmental initiative with confidence. ‘The hives were installed earlier last year and produced their first crop of honey last month. The rooftop was the chosen location for the bees to call home, as it is otherwise unused, and ensures there is no risk to customers,’ Mr Shaw said. Mr Shaw continued on to reveal that Brookside wanted to contribute to the wonderful green spaces that surround the shopping centre, and that the bees will play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and keeping the area in bloom. With local customers keen to pay a premium for the pleasure of being the first to taste Brookside’s honey, the first pot of honey was auctioned off. Proceeds from the auction were donated to the Youngcare - a charity fighting for freedom, dignity and

Planning Ahead

An update from the Ferny Grove Upper Kedron & Keperra Residents Association Happy 2022! As mentioned in our previous columns, our Association presented a community-led budget submission to Cr Toomey of The Gap Ward in October 2021.

The submission included recommendations on expenditure categories within BCC’s budget being: local roads, parks, bikeways, footpaths, reserves and public transport. BCC is Australia’s largest council by population size, so understandably its budget process is staged over many months. We were advised that the budget category being reviewed by Council in November/December related to Parks so we’re pleased to provide an extract from our budget submission relating to that category and intended to inform Council in shaping its decisions. The most frequently requested improvements applying across all parks in the area were: • Toilets • Exercise / Play Equipment • Shading • Seating • Off Leash dog parks with more poop bags/bins • Dog agility equipment in the dog parks • A new dog-safe gate at the UK Recreation Reserve dog park to allow safe entry/exit from the Charolais Crescent side of the park. There are also some local parks that residents feel have had minimal maintenance and require attention by Council, which include McGinn Road Park (improved access to the ponds) and McAlroy Road Park There are also some significant aspirational opportunities for the larger parks, being the Upper Kedron Recreation Reserve and the Honeyeater Street parklands. • Dirt bike / BMX tracks • Skate Park • Cycle training circuit Improved access to and wildlife protection in conservation and reserve spaces was also a feature. Of importance to the community for this category are: • Allow safe access to Honeyeater Park along the creek • Allow safe access to all greenspaces within Ellendale • Plant out Levitt Road Land into a parkland / bird sanctuary • Connect wildlife corridors with plantings • Installation of wildlife connection infrastructure (eg. Possum bridges, koala access etc.) Longer term, we also alerted Council to the need for planning for when the Upper Kedron quarry lease expires and consider converting that land to a community greenspace. While the final budget allocation will be determined by Council, we trust they will have regard to these community recommendations and look forward to sharing details of what we submitted relating to other budget categories in future columns. After closing the workshop in December members were busy cleaning and repairing the equipment ready for the new year opening. The Club is planning to go on several field trips in the new year to fossick for various material. Three of our regular trips are to Casino for Labradorite, Chinchilla for Petrified Wood and Cloyna/Windera for agate and Jasper, plus we hope to add more trips as the year progressives. These trips are generally done in the cooler months when it is not too hot for digging. These three regular trips are generally weekend trips because of the distance we need to travel. As the year progresses, we will have more details about other trips we will embark on throughout the year. Other than fossicking trips we sometimes travel as a group to Gem Shows which are held by other Clubs in close proximity to Brisbane. Club Gem Shows planned for next year are to be held at Wondai, Casino and Caboolture. These Gem Shows are a great source of buying lapidary material for use by members. Our fresh new look welcomes new members who may wish to join our Club. You can come along any Thursday morning between 9 am and 12 midday or Saturday afternoon from 1 pm to 3 pm. to have a look around and see if you would like to join our Club. We are hoping that conditions for organising field trips to collect cutting materials will improve in 2022. It’s in the Bag

READY TO RIDE

Some of the bags that were packed.

The students in the Montessori Adolescent Program at Mitchelton State High School have been involved in a very worthwhile community project – supporting Share the Dignity charity.

This organisation aims to address the problem of period poverty for women and girls at risk, fleeing domestic violence or living below the poverty line, to help them to meet their personal hygiene needs. During the festive season, the charity aimed to collect and distribute period products and essential toiletries (and small non-food treats) packed into handbags. Mitchelton State High School were thrilled to be able to support their ‘It’s in the Bag’ campaign and Montessori students gathered and sorted donations of period products, soap, shampoo, toothpaste etc along with pre-loved and new handbags. They organised the donations received into boxes labelled ‘Essential Items’ and ‘Extras’ to ensure that each bag was packed appropriately. Each Monday afternoon saw them enthusiastically packing the handbags to be delivered to women’s refuges, hospitals and directly to homeless and at-risk girls and women. Students appealed to families and staff for donations from the beginning of the school term. Along with these generous donations, they received money from amazing fundraising from other school departments, (warm thanks to Jo Smith from SEP, Maddy Smith and Chen Ji from the International school) which permitted them to purchase even more bags and products and allowed including little extras like sunscreen, lip balm, fold up tote bags, moisturiser and hair ties. These efforts, along with all the kind donations, resulted in a total of 45 bags to this very worthwhile campaign. Three bags were specifically packed for Mums and Bubs and 25 bags were aimed at teenage girls. Many of the students paid extra special attention when selecting from the donation boxes to choose items that other teenagers, doing it tough, would appreciate. This activity generated many important conversations regarding poverty awareness in general, especially homelessness and the importance of volunteering in our community. Students discussed the positive impact that even small endeavours can have. There were conversations about the increased hardship that Covid-19 and the lockdowns would have caused for the people who would receive the bags. Many comments were heard hoping the people receiving the bags would feel cared for and seen despite the many challenges they were facing. Our students and staff benefited from these positive side effects of contributing to the larger community. Students hope to make this a yearly enterprise in the Montessori Adolescent Program at Mitchelton State High School as part of our efforts to contribute to the general community. The Ins And Outs Of Summer Gardening An update from The Hills Organic Garden Club

Summer has been reasonably good to us thus far, with bearable temperatures and plenty of rain—especially in December. While we do not yet have a lot planted, the rain has thoroughly soaked the soil in the beds and given our citrus plants a good water.

Our cucumbers have just started producing, but our tomatoes are struggling with the humidity and wet weather. Our beans, sweet potatoes and rosellas are coming along slowly. Hopefully a good crop will reward us with some delicious rosella jam along with fresh beans and sweet, sweet potatoes! Our asparagus plants are looking just as healthy as are our banana trees and passionfruit vines. It’s amazing what a difference rainwater makes to the plants compared to “town water”. Of course, with the rain, the grass and weeds grow at quite a rapid rate, meaning that mowing is required at least once a week to keep the garden looking presentable. If only weeding wasn’t never-ending... However, our loyal members turn up every Sunday and work hard to keep our garden looking neat and tidy. The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier, so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Our members meet on Sunday afternoons during the summer months from 3.30 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family and $5 for Juniors. Visit hog.org.au, search “The Hills Organic Garden” on Facebook, or phone 0407582980 for information. We look forward to meeting you all!

Top Tech Tips For Our Seniors

Connectedness enhances older Australians’ wellbeing and has a positive effect on their physical and mental health.

Yet while Australians aged 65 and over are willing to learn and add new digital skills that enable them to live a better life, they also recognise that new technologies can help facilitate this. Research shows that 44 per cent of people aged over 65 years experience social exclusion, which is twice the rate of exclusion for other age groups. Moreover, at least 10 per cent of senior Australians suffer from loneliness or social isolation, a number that has failed to drop over the last two decades. Shaping Connections is a research program co-created by RMIT University’s School of Economics, Finance and Marketing, and the University of Third Age (U3A). The program was set up to better understand how technology use supports seniors’ connectedness and enhances social inclusion and participation. The group’s chief investigator, Dr Torgeir Aleti, says that while the project is ongoing, findings so far indicate that seniors recognise that new technologies can help them develop supportive and rewarding relationships with their families, there are barriers around the perceived risks of using the internet, smartphones, email and social media. Unsurprisingly, these typically revolve around safety; however, the problem is compounded by what many seniors see as a lack of volunteers to help them cross the digital divide. The results also showed that seniors who went looking for advice often faced serious obstacles, with many noting their own families often displayed a ‘can’t be bothered explaining’ attitude.

Follow-up interviews with older Australians revealed that explaining new apps and constantly evolving technologies to someone who isn’t a digital native can carry a lot of emotional tension, Dr Aleti explained. Dr Aleti conveyed that while these hurdles are not easily overcome, there are other ways you can help your older friends and relatives gain confidence in using digital technologies. Seniors benefitted from collective computer classes, such as those held at the University of the Third Age, seniors’ computer clubs and local libraries. Surprisingly, YouTube also turned out to be one of seniors’ biggest allies for learning new digital skills as it allowed them to search for content and watch at their own pace as many times as needed, he says. Helpful tips from BE Connected: 1. Choose a strong password that only you will know. 2. Keep your antivirus software up to date. 3. Use secure Wi-Fi networks and avoid using public Wi-Fi for banking or credit card transactions. 4. Think twice before sharing on social media and be sure to keep your personal information private. 5. Make secure payments online, look for the padlock symbol and ‘https://’ in the website’s address bar. Prostate Cancer - Is It Secret Mens Business?

Rotary Club of Samford Valley will have as guest speaker at their meeting Distinguished Professor Judith Clements. While in the past prostate cancer has often been deemed to be, ‘secret men’s business’, the Rotary Club of Samford Valley want to see that change. We know that the occurrence of Prostate Cancer in men ranks equal to breast cancer in women. We also know that more than 18,000 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, and more than 3,300 tragically die from the disease. It’s the most commonly diagnosed and second biggest cancer killer among Australian men, after lung cancer. This doesn’t need to be the case. Awareness of the symptoms and early treatment has meant that there are now 230,000 men in Australia living post diagnosis and 95% have a five-year survival rate. The Samford Valley Rotary Club are proud to have as guest speaker at their meeting on the 8th of February. Distinguished Professor Judith Clements who would rank as one of Australia’s most renowned experts in the field of prostate and ovarian cancer. Prof. Clements is Principal Research Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council - and leads the Cancer Program at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. She is also Scientific Director of the Australian Prostate Cancer Research Centre. Greater awareness is needed as currently 15% of men diagnosed have stage 3 or 4 prostate cancer. Fewer than 1 in 4 men detect prostate cancer at stage 1, when we know we can beat it. Research shows if a prostate cancer develops in a man who

carries a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, its more likely to be aggressive and to spread beyond the prostate. PSA blood tests can help detect prostate cancers early – it’s vital that men with a family history of breast, ovarian, or prostate cancers discuss their risks with a GP and start PSA testing from an earlier age. There have been many studies looking at risk factors for prostate cancer. Factors that are most strongly linked to an increased chance of developing prostate cancer are highlighted below. Prostate cancer is an age-dependent disease, which means the chance of developing the disease generally increases with age. If a man has a father or brother with prostate cancer, he has a higher chance of developing prostate cancer than men with no such history. Don’t miss this opportunity to come along to the Samford Valley Rotary Club meeting to hear from one of Australia’s leading authorities in prostate cancer. Event Details: Date: 8th February Time: 6.30pm for 7pm start Location: Samford Bowls Club, 2116 Mt Samdon Road, Samford Cost: $15. Community Sport – Why Play It? By Georgia Wright

As a sport-lover and a writer for Echo News, I thought to myself, why not fuse my enjoyment for both hobbies together for this month’s article? For as long as I can remember, sport has always been a big part of my life. From carving up the dance floor as a child, to finding my strength at Tae Kwon Do, to calling myself an Arana Hills Netball Club player, I have never gone a period of time without sport—and I don’t plan to, either! According to research, children who dabble in sports are eight times more likely to grow up to be healthy, productive adults with stronger leadership and communication skills. Even the academic performance and mental health of young ones are evidenced to improve, along with their social abilities. The countless benefits of participating in regular physical activity are known far and wide by all. However, the bottom line is—kids need exercise. And lucky for all the rising pocket rockets in our community, our region has a marvellous array of sporting clubs on offer.

With 2021 finally coming to a close, another year of opportunities and open doors lies ahead of us. For the youth in our district, the New Year Resolution of ‘getting fitter, happier and healthier’ can easily be made into a reality. Dozens of signon days and try-outs are right around the corner, so make sure to take note of some of these essential dates in our feature. Personally, I’ll be forever glad that I started up sport from a young age, and even gladder that I found my love for netball. Some of my highest highs have been felt on the netball court, and over the years it really brought me out of my shell. So, community sport – that’s why your child should play it.

January Jobs for the Garden An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club

Happy New Year! At present the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club is still in recess for the holiday season. All being well, the first 2022 meeting will take place at the Enoggera Memorial Hall on Thursday, 3rd February. Debbie Aitcheson, the guest speaker that day, will talk about Medicine from the Garden. Debbie and her husband have a property at Minden called ‘The Chilli Patch’ where herbs and by-products are grown to sell, so it will be interesting to learn what can be grown at home to enhance our well-being. January is a busy time for gardeners. Have you noticed bright orange delicate looking insects hovering above the lawn? That’s a sign of the presence of lawn grubs in which this insect lays its eggs. Don’t delay in treating your lawn if you want to avoid ugly brown patches. Rose bushes need attention this month. If you give them some plant food and a light prune to

remove spent blooms and any diseased or dead material, you’ll be rewarded with an autumn flush of choice roses. Fruiting trees require nutrients and a check to control insect attack. Any fruit that has fallen to the ground should be picked up and put in the garbage bin. Tip prune any young shrubs to make them develop into the desired shape. Some of the cuttings could be used for propagation. This month the warm humid weather makes mature parsley plants rot off at the base, so be ready to plant a new supply. Ideally, every six months parsley plants should be replaced. The December meeting was enjoyable. The club patron, Margaret Morrow, presented the club with another perpetual trophy, a tray, because there wasn’t any space for more inscriptions after 57 years. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. New members and visitors are most welcome. For more information please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

1. Prepare your garden beds, by removing weeds, adding compost, and organic fertiliser. 2. Seedlings are generally ready for transplant after the first 2 true leaves appear on the plant - or at approx. 4-6 weeks of life, depending on the season and the crop you are planting. 3. Always plant your seedlings in the evening, after the heat of the day, at the correct spacing. If planted too closely there will be stunted growth...too far apart and you have wasted space in your bed. 4. Water your seedlings at least twice per day, everyday, for the first couple of weeks to ensure that the seedlings will take, and form root structures in their new home. After that, water as required. Most vegetables require 1-2 inches of rain, or watering per week on average. However, in warm conditions, this will increase. 5. Using shade cloth - or other protective screens to grow your seedlings in - will give you the most success, as they will also protect against pest damage, and provide some climate moderation, whilst the plants are young and vulnerable. www.echo-news.com.au

NE W YEAR NEW YOU

Decades Of Locals Caring For Locals

Albany Creek resident Karen and Ferny Hills resident Ellen and have both worked at North West Private Hospital for decades and say it’s the caring local community that keeps them there. “It’s the sense of family… it’s a tight knit community and we look after each other. I have patients coming back and looking out for me and it’s just lovely having that connection,” said Karen – who worked in a variety of roles over her past 30 years at the hospital – from surgical ward nurse to theatres, and for the past seven years as Perioperative Service Manager, where her responsibilities include overseeing theatre, day surgery and more. Karen said the hospital still has that ‘small hospital’ caring feel, despite having undergone a $55 million upgrade recently and now being licensed for 150 beds. “We do a lot more surgical specialties here at North West Private than ever before, yet I think you get really personalised care here as people are recognised as individuals - not just a number.” Ellen has worked as the hospital’s Director of Clinical Services for 15 years. Before that, she worked for 10 years in various other roles, always valuing the connectedness between team members. “The size of our hospital allows us to have a flat management structure and my clinical managers are very hands-on , allowing me to keep in touch with the day-today operations of the hospital.

North West Private Hospitals’ Ellen and Karen “This helps us provide patient-centred care here at North West.” The Everton Park private hospital has had several operators during Ellen’s time. Ellen believes that Ramsay Health Care – Australia’s largest private hospital operator – which took over in 2005, is the most supportive and inclusive. Ellen reflects on having met Ramsay Health Care’s founder Paul Ramsay before his passing in 2014. His passion, company’s ethos, has always inspired her. “He always used to say over and over how we’ve got to care for our people – and that’s now known as ‘The Ramsay Way’ – we’re people caring for people.”

Slowing Down The Ageing Process What You Need To Know!

Your 40’s and beyond can be years when you’re just as in shape and active as ever. Whether you’re just entering your 40’s, are well acquainted with them, or can see them in your rearview mirror, you may wonder if there are changes you should be making to your fitness and nutrition routines to optimize your health and feel as fit and vibrant as you'd like. So what is our best shot at slowing down the ageing process? Structured and safe strength training with a bit of fun! Local business Enhance PT is passionate about helping people reach their fitness goals without all of the hype you may find elsewhere. They foster a strictly non-glamour zone where classes are lead by experienced female trainers only. Owner and operator Miranda Pardon uses her age as a selling point. “I’m 51 and not a gym bunny, but that doesn’t mean I’m not fit or strong. I know that some people are reluctant to start an exercise program because they feel intimidated by gyms, mirrors, and those hard-core-type gym images. At Enhance PT we want to change that perception. We’ve been working with the 40+ age group for many years and we’ve found that most people want to come and exercise with real people and with trainers who understand aging bodies.” The 40+ age group can have very specific requirements with exercise prescription. Fitness programs need to be modified to suit age groups and accommodate health issues. Menopause, degenerative bone conditions, vertigo, heart and lung disease are to name just a few.

Page 32 - January 2022, The Hills Echo

Enhance PT offer small group training so they can provide appropriate supervision with a focus on injury prevention and a maximum of 15 people per class. Movements for everyday life, such as flexibility, balance, functional strength are all incorporated into their programs. Clients can you work at THEIR OWN level and don’t have to worry about keeping up with anyone else. So, if you’re looking to get back into exercise in a safe, social and fun environment , pop along and join the Enhance PT community this January with their 10 for 10 offer - every class for 10 weeks is $10 per class!

Ageing Gracefully A Therapists Guide

By Dermal Aesthetician , Elizabeth Kiosses It can be an overwhelming task sifting through the plethora of aesthetic treatments on offer. Laser, dermaplaning, chemical peels, eyelid surgery, threads, filler… The list goes on. How do you know what is the best type of treatment for you? Dermal Aesthetician Elizabeth Kiosses gives us the lowdown about the different treatments on the market. So, what is your biggest skin concern? When you look in the mirror, ask yourself what are the two most obvious areas you would like to improve. It could be fine lines around the eyes and a sagging jawline. Do you see sun damage and areas of darker pigment? The most common comment I hear is, “I don’t mind getting older, I just feel I look tired and my skin needs a refresh”. Once you can describe exactly what you would like to target. Then a simple consult with a skin professional can determine what treatments are best suited to you. Our skin is our largest organ and the primary role is to offer protection from the environment. Over treating the skin with excessive scraping and peeling will lead to an impaired barrier. This means the skin can no longer offer protection and new conditions such as dermatitis, rosacea and allergic reactions can start to appear. Having a laser treatment then excessive sun exposure soon after can lead to a complication like hyperpigmentation where the skin produces larger patches of pigment. This is why a consultation with a skin professional is so very important. They will take into account your lifestyle including sun exposure, your desired outcome, current skin condition, medical history and current medications and even your budget. They will also advise on any downtime after treatment and the best preparatory serums to get the most out of your treatment. Assurance that the treatment is the safest and most effective for your individual skin. A successful treatment plan should have your friends commenting on how good you look and will lead you to feel confident in your own skin. Skin needling is one of the most common treatments to strengthen skin. Despite the name, it is a reasonably comfortable treatment that has minimal risks usually with only 24hrs of downtime. There are clinical studies that report positive outcomes for acne scarring, sun damage, lax skin, stretch marks and overall rejuvenation. It is important to note that there is little regulation with these types of treatments. The actual needling devices are regulated by TGA and each council is responsible for policing infection control laws. The technicians’ qualifications however are not regulated. A clinic that offers a package of treatments without a consultation should be a red flag. Aesthetic treatments are a fantastic way to repair the skin and boost your self-confidence. They are incredibly safe with minimal risk if done in qualified hands. Subtle dermal therapy treatments are an amazing tool to soften lines and restore skin strength. Ageing gracefully means that you look the best you can be with glowing skin. Dickson & Ryan Candidates Where Are You?

The Hills & Districts Chamber of Commerce Inc. will be holding a ‘Meet the Candidates’ Forum at their breakfast meeting in the new year.

They are working with an approximate timetable that the election will be no later than May 2022, meaning the Forum would most likely be held on March 22, 2022, or a date (to be confirmed) in April 2022. The Chamber are inviting all known candidates for both the Dickson and Ryan electorates to take part. The ‘Meet the Candidates’ forum is an opportunity for chamber members and the wider community to question and hear the responses of candidates standing for election. They aim for a friendly and cooperative atmosphere in which the community can hear political discussion free of overly enthusiastic or disruptive attendees. As always, an experienced chairperson will be present to ensure that a balanced, cordial arena will provide all candidates with the opportunity to explain why they are offering themselves as candidates. The Chamber are conscious that many things can change in the months leading up to the election, however if you intend to nominate for either electorate and wish to take part, they would be grateful if you could forward your best contact details as well as your intention in principle via return email to Committee Chair, Mr Brian Battersby by mobile on 0418 878 508 or by email advocacy@hillschamber.org.au MEET THE CANDIDATES FORUM: Date: Tuesday, Breakfast Meeting, date to be determined. Home Computer Tutoring Leads To Confident Learning

Brisbane Seniors Online is a not-for-profit community group that has been helping seniors and over 50’s with computers, emerging technology and the internet in the Greater Brisbane area for 20 years. Assistance is provided by volunteer unpaid mentors who provide tutoring in the learner’s own home, on their own device and a pace that suits the learner. New learners as well as volunteer mentors are sought in most areas of the Brisbane Seniors Online coverage area. Office volunteers are also sought to help run the central office at Woolloongabba. Brisbane Seniors Online teaches Windows, Apple, Android and smart phones. Volunteer mentors joining BSOL are offered a formal induction and ongoing support through the Mentor Support group. Upskilling and training of mentors occurs from time to time. Volunteer mentoring can be a rewarding experience and assists mentors to improve their existing knowledge and skills. Learners applying to join BSOL can indicate their current experience and knowledge, the devices and operating systems they use and what they would like to learn. The learner is then matched to a suitable mentor who can assist them in home tutoring. Learners, as a guide, receive 12 hours of home lessons and then ongoing support for the balance of their membership year. Whilst computer classes have benefit, home tutoring on a one-on-one basis on your own device is more

conducive to quicker and more confident learning. During the coronavirus crisis, there has been a proliferation of scams by opportunistic fraudsters using email, text messages and phone calls. Many computer and internet users have had their devices infected with malware and viruses. Brisbane Seniors Online can help learners identify how to recognise and avoid scams and make their devices safe and secure.   An important aspect of security is protecting passwords and using multi-factor authentication to make access more secure. It is also important to have a system in place so that when a user passes away, family or trusted friends will be able to access websites, social media, email and important private information. Whilst learners are sought, volunteer mentors who have the necessary skills and able to relate to seniors are also required in most of the Greater Brisbane area. Mentors join at no cost. All home tutoring is carried out within the coronavirus safety plan guidelines. Learners pay a one-off joining fee of $20 and $45 for a year. Brisbane Seniors Online would like to acknowledge funding and support from Jim Sullivan MP, Member for Stafford that has been provided to Brisbane Seniors Online. For more information, contact Brisbane Seniors Online at 3393 2225 or see www.bsol.asn.au. Further information can be accessed through Facebook.com/BrisbaneSeniorsOnline

Local Ladies Looking The Islands Unlock Forward to 2022 an Interesting History An update from the Arana View Club

Happy New Year to everyone!

2022 is looking like another year of COVID challenges, so let’s hope we are still able to enjoy all the activities that are planned. The last meeting of 2021, our Christmas party, was a fun-filled day with some committee members attempting to perform the COVID Lockdown song to Petula Clark’s ‘Downtown’. At least the ladies provided some humour in their COVID costumes. Musical entertainment by Romio and Juliette had many members up dancing. The day was complete with many members winning prizes in our Christmas raffles, the proceeds of which go towards assisting our Learning for Life students. The first meeting for 2022 is on February 2nd, 10.30am for 11 am start at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade, Keperra. Cost is $30 for a two course lunch with tea and coffee. We will have our lucky door and raffles, the proceeds of which go towards supporting our Smith Family Learning for Life students. This meeting is our AGM, so annual memberships of $20 are due. The guest speakers will be Ali and Jan Schutt from Stationery Aides. An update from the Samford Museum

Best Wishes for 2022 from Samford Museum members.

Unfortunatley, the Australia Day celebrations for the 26th January have been cancelled due to rapidly increasing COVID 19 and Omicron cases, along with the frequently changing rules we need to abide by. During the Christmas/New Year break I have read some stories told by those who have lived on our Bay islands in the booklet ‘ Century of Moreton Bay People Vol 1’ by Peter Ludlow. The islands, which are popular holiday and tourist destinations today, hold so much early history. Included in the booklet was information about St Helena, and its notorious former prison, along with how a 1960’s grazing lease holder became increasingly interested in the island’s past as he uncovered more evidence of its early occupation. Another interesting story highlighted the story of the young man who was transported like A Mews Wagon. a criminal in a railway Photo by Adnic photography prison wagon from a North Queensland cattle property to Peel Island’s lazaret due to contracting leprosy. He spent eight years there in isolation before the disease went into remission. After only two years of freedom, the disease became active again. He returned to the island to be fortunately included with 20 of the island’s most seriously affected patients who took part in the world’s first historic trials of a new drug. His cure was effected and was allowed to leave free of the disease after another four years on Peel island. Since 1984 Samford Museum members have strived to record the stories of generations of Samford district’s residents, many of which have been published to preserve Samford’s now very popular visitor destination’s history. Samford Reminiscences are supported in displays of memorabilia. For more information reagrding the Samford Museum call 3289 2743 or ring Geoff on 0417 610 983

Living With The Enemy Know The Signs

This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry. This month she talks about Coercive Control.

Coercive Control or intimate terrorism can feel like living with an enemy who claims to love you. Like being a hostage, walking on eggshells in your own home. This is not gender specific; contrary to what many assume, women are not the only gender who are victims to domestic violence. Same sex relationships are not immune either—it’s just not spoken enough about in the general population. Sometimes a person can live in an abusive relationship for years and not realise they are experiencing abuse. Hard to believe? This is because coercive control can be harder to identify than the obvious physical abuse signs. When you’ve been put down enough, you start to believe it. Tasmania is the only Australian Jurisdiction that has laws directly addressing coercive and controlling behaviours. Coercive control is strategic and constant manipulation to instil fear within someone. Becoming the dominant decisionmaker can have very real psychological consequences on a partner. Some examples are; isolating from friends and family, motoring your activity & what you are doing at all times, restricting independence, controlling your body &

how you look, degrading & belittling, limiting access to money, blackmailing, jealousy & possessiveness, threats & intimidation, gaslighting, forcing traditional gender roles as worth, turning your children against you, dictating your sexual relationship or even threatening you kids or pets. This is all because they ‘love’ you. Usually, it occurs behind doors whilst they continue to be charismatic and charming to others. Sound familiar? Knowing the signs and what to do can be the first step out of denial and into empowerment. FYI: Denial is a survival mechanism (psychologically) so it is keeping you emotionally safe. Getting out of an abusive relationship can be complex. It takes time, planning & emotional resilience. If you feel like you don’t have the strength to leave, your partner has deliberately disempowered you. Know that it is not your fault! Maintain communication with your family and friends as much as possible. Call a domestic violence hotline regularly so you can be honest and speak about your concerns. Practice how to get away safely, including your kids. Have a ‘safety plan’. The initial period of separation can be dangerous. Educate yourself. Try to secretly document as much as you can, while keeping yourself safe. If it’s your mate, being a safe space for them to talk to (when they are ready) and not giving up on them. This is without judgement or telling them what they need to do. It’s not easy to just pick up and leave. The more we all talk about it, the more we can all help recognise the signs. No one deserves to live in fear.

Do you know that if you text 0477 13 11 14 between 6pm - midnight when you are in need of support, a Lifeline crisis support worker will text with you?

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

It is a given that our parents are our most important model in our lives and parental statements about our abilities or lack of them deeply effect our view of ourselves, our place and our effectiveness in this world. Often we don’t even notice, let alone question the veracity of the body of thoughts that is the basis of uncomfortable feelings and non-supportive behaviours. These patterns surface when we are stressed and vulnerable. They have the power to stultify competent necessary decision making and action. Understanding is critical to change. The demonstration of this is evident in a client’s following story (with the kind consent of the client). Jan had some years before left her husband and had just recently gone through the divorce. Until one year ago she had been a high octane CEO. She had decided that she wanted to launch into business for herself. Jan had got to a certain point in establishing her business, big decisions needed to be made, when she become literally frozen with self-doubt, fear and anxiety. In exploring the basis of these feelings she became aware of two dominating thoughts. One was, and in Jan’s words “My mother drummed into me from a little kid that I am not good enough to do it on my own”. When this thought arose, Jan felt tremendous anxiety in the solar plexus and the feeling of a tight elastic band around her forehead. Her throat felt like she had a ball stuck in it. The feeling is real. It is our body and we are directly experiencing it. Because the feeling is so real we then attribute this reality, this truth of feeling to the “truth” of our thoughts i.e. the feeling is real, so the thought must be real. In Jan’s case it is possible to see how much of an effect on her business possibilities such a deeply encoded parental judgment can have, “I can make it in the supportive environment of a corporation, but on my own??” (Well, not according to what Mum/I think about me). Jan’s turmoil was even more complicated by the totally conflicting second statement she heard from the same person that she wanted support from. My Mum would say “I am perfectly strong, independent and capable of doing it on my own and therefore I don’t or should not need anyone to be there for me”. So “I have always had to be the tough exterior person to survive when underneath I desperately want someone there for me”. These thoughts produce overwhelming feelings of loneliness and sadness in Jan’s chest and severe tightness in her throat. No wonder Jan is frozen and feels totally conflicted. She is supposed to be “strong enough to do it on her own” without any one’s

Counselling Corner help, but at the same time she is “not good enough to do it on her own” without help, but she can’t ask for it even if she wants to because to get approval she needs to be “tough to survive”. What a mess we have going on in our heads. That Jan was able to explore her pain, pinpoint the thoughts and then examine the truth of them in the context of her life’s achievements enabled her to disengage herself from their power. And as a footnote to us parents, much of what we do is unintentional and we in our rushed and often frazzled state are not aware how statements such as these can impact on the sensitivities of our children. Jan as a parent herself could understand and let go of the self judgement that was perhaps more about her Mother’s frustrated state than any of Jan’s abilities. Robin

THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.

State Member for Ferny Grove

The tower crane at the construction site of the Ferny Grove TOD is much larger than any seen in our community in many years.

Ferny Grove TOD construction update I have been receiving great numbers of positive enquires regarding the construction of the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at the Ferny Grove Railway Station. I can report the project is on schedule and proceeding well. Initial excavation work is now complete, with construction of the carpark now underway. Once complete, the TOD will increase commuter car parking at the station by more than 43% and will provide hundreds of much needed local jobs. The multi-level carpark, which is under construction at present, should be completed around Christmas 2022 – before construction moves on to the next stage. I am informed most of the units have now been sold – with the majority of interest coming from locals who wish to stay in the area while changing their lifestyle to incorporate the convenience the TOD will offer. New citizens The last couple of years have been very difficult for everyone, but for residents seeking to become citizens there have been more hurdles than usual. I would like to wish everyone who is planning to become a new citizen this Australia Day all the best! Well done on your perseverance. School Watch Empty schools can become targets for unlawful entry, arson, stealing, graffiti and property damage, especially during school holiday periods. This comes at a cost to the whole community and not just the financial cost of repairs. Over the past three years the Palaszczuk Government has invested over $50 million in our local schools to improve facilities. Please help to keep our schools safe over the new year period by reporting suspicious activities. Look, Listen, Report. Call School Watch on 13 17 88. If you see a crime in progress, call Triple Zero (000).

Community Choir Entertains Regis

SHARE YOUR STORY!

Do you have a great local story you would like to share? If so, we would LOVE to hear it! Email admin@echo-news.com.au

Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson

The Serenata Singers at Regis Ferny Grove

During November, the Serenata Singers were invited to sing at two Regis Aged Care facilities, namely The Gap and Ferny Grove.

Working hard. Getting results.

On both occasions, an appreciative audience enjoyed the varied repertoire of the Singers and were observed singing along during a number of items, especially the Sing-a-Long with old favourites that are very familiar to an older set. The Singers needed to be early as Regis is very cautious about inviting outsiders in, as a means of protecting their residents in these times of pandemic. No matter, they were able to entertain themselves as warm-up for the main event. In more recent concerts, the musical directors have encouraged members to present solos and accompanied acts. They have had some willing members and others who had to be encouraged! However, all have been appreciated by audiences and choir. In Regis The Gap, the additional program acts included a cappella ballad and a trio of an old Scottish folk songs, while at Regis Ferny Grove, the residents were treated to 3407 1900 ‘Amazing Grace’, ‘The Blue Danube’ and the 477 Waterworks Road, Ashgrove QLD 4060 introduction of ‘Fiddler thegap.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au on the Roof ’, before being joined by the choir. www.steventoomey.com.au The residents joined the choir in classics such as TheGapWard ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ and ‘I Belong to #thegapward Glasgow.’ If you would like to join the Serenata Singers, they would love your company. Our Christmas party was enjoyed by all and we had a fantastic turn up of members. The meal prepared by the two chefs at Meals on Wheels, Manuel and Jason was a complete hit followed by Plum Pudding and Pavlova. Our long time Hostess, Marie Stibbe, gave in her resignation at the last committee meeting after 18 years in the position. Marie plans to take it easy for a while but will still remain a member of the club. The club will be returning on the 24th January and we hope to see all our old members and welcome some new ones. We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and an even better New Year. For further information, please phone 3355 0358

Happy New Year to All Our Members!

Our Christmas Lunch was a great success, our caterers The Golden Roast put on a great meal for us. We also had a raffle and lucky door prizes. We start off the year as follows; January 21st Bingo, January 28th. Hoy for $ and Pie & Peas, February 4th. Bingo Events will be dependent on the COVID-19 virus which regrettably is still around. The committee will be meeting on the 20th January by which time we will know what the restrictions will be. We also wish a speedy recovery to all our sick members. Till next time, Mike 0406 601 589 The new park at Pine Hills Park, Arana Hills is looking splendid! Can you believe this equipment is the same gear that was down at the play park at Leslie Patrick Park not so long ago?!

A Nugget Of Nostalgia In A Gallery Of Graffiti

News and Views from a Tramway Muse. By David Fryer

Coal may be a dirty four-letter word these days, but the smutty black nuggets once powered the bustling trams of Brisbane; and it all happened at a prime river-side setting in New Farm.

The imposing New Farm Powerhouse was built to power the extensive tramway network of Brisbane, reportedly the largest in the southern hemisphere. Designed by council architect Roy Rusden Ogg, the building was constructed in stages between 1928 and 1940. Coal arrived by rail and barge to be stored in an enormous stockpile in a dedicated holding yard. Industrial pollution has long been a biproduct of power generation, but it was especially taxing for nearby residents. Wash days were often plagued by clouds of billowing black smoke and fine particles of dust that delivered a whole new meaning to smutty white smalls on the Inala Palms (Hills Hoists). Trams began to fall out of favour with the introduction of modern Henry, the Secretary motor buses after WW2 and the Powerhouse began to suffer a slow from car club VCCQ. but inevitable decline. The last tram was removed in 1969 and the Powerhouse was officially decommissioned in 1971. The redundant monolith was sold to the Queensland Government and repurposed for a variety of uses: as a works depot, a chemical store, a training base for military exercises, and a refuge for homeless people. Sadly, it languished in a state of squalid disrepair for many years before returning to Brisbane City Council custodianship in 1989. These days, the Powerhouse enjoys a new lease of life as a temple to the arts, performing and visual. The raw-edge industrial ambience has been preserved, along with an abundance of heritage-listed graffiti. The graffiti may be celebrated by thousands of visitors every week, but there are no trams or tram-related memorabilia to be seen. In fact, the only mention of the once iconic people parcel can be found on a modest information board hidden behind a privacy screen in a neglected corner. Pity, because the Powerhouse owes its very existence to trams. The Powerhouse may be a temple to the arts, but the Brisbane Tramway Museum is a temple of transport. The extensive collection of heritage vehicles includes a tangle of trams tucked away in deep storage. Sadly, a shortage of funding and lack of volunteers means the sleeping beauties are unlikely to see the light of day for a very long time. Will a courageous visionary pluck one out of hibernation for display at the Powerhouse? One can only hope, but if it ever happens it would surely qualify as a worthy installation, a precious nugget of nostalgia in a gallery of graffiti…..…. © David Fryer maximalist@bigpond.com The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly sponsored by the Brisbane City Council.
