Marking a Milestone with a Mural Although a big party couldn't take place this year due to COVID -19 restrictions, the Willmore Kindergarten community still wanted to mark this important milestone on their calendar.
It was decided that a small group of past and present teachers, along with committee members, would gather on Saturday 17th October at the George Willmore Park, Ferny Hills, to celebrate 50 years of Willmore. The kindy kids in front of the mural Festivities were kicked off with the revealing of the new mural on the toilet block at the park. The children had helped plan the concept of the mural, which was ‘What they liked to do in The Hills?’ These concepts, were included in the final design, which was painted by two very talented kindy mums, Rebecca Holland and Kimberley Oehlman. The kids had also had the oppurtunity to show off their artwork skills, having been escorted down to paint their designs on top of the mural earlier in the month. As a kind nod to the community support the kindy has received, ‘thank you’ flowers were also on display around the mural. These large, hand-cut, wooden flowers were painted by the children and supplied by The Mens Shed. Each was inscripted with a ‘thank you’ to every community partner that has supported them over the years. Following the unveiling of the mural, the group strolled up to the kindy, where the group Singing Happy Birthday! spent some time sharing stories and looking through old kindy photos. For past directors and committee members, it was a wonderful chance to see some of the changes that have been made to the kindy over the years. One of the most exciting things for the children (and educators!) in the lead up to the celebration has been the unearthing of the time capsule. The time capsule had been buried at the kindy in 1995 (as part of the 25 year anniversary celebrations). Each day leading up to the 50th anniversary, the children revealed one item out of the time capsule, which gave some insight into what it was like being at kindy in 1995. Some items included; a 1995 Coca Cola calendar, a phone card, a Barbie and Power Ranger, a poster with all of the 1995 kids’ hand prints and names, along with letters from the 1995 kids, teachers & committee members. The kindy will be burying the time capsule with memorbilla back into the ground at the end of the year so that it can be unearthed at the next 75 year celebrations! Lastly, but certainly not least, the group enjoyed a beautiful cake donated by a local cake A September 1995 edition of The Hills Echo was found in the time capsule! maker, Brisbane Cakes By Design, and sang Happy Birthday to the kindy!

All set for State at Arana Ascot
Kara, Lara and Georgia sporting their gold medals from last year
There has been much excitement in the air at Arana Ascot Hockey Club with four club members having been selected to play in the Queensland under 15’s squad in 2021.
The four talented girls include Kara Bradley (13years old), Lara Pyle (13 years old), Georgia Harris (14 years old) and Alexa Nguyen (14 years old), who will all trial in February 2021 in order to make the Queensland under 15’s team. The accomplished girls, who have all been playing Hockey from a young age, were chosen from numerous other contenders, showing that all their hard work, dedication and training has now paid off!
However, these local girls are no stranger to success on a state level. Last year Kara and Georgia played in the Queensland under 13’s team that won gold at Nationals. In addition, Kara and Lara played in the Queensland under 12’s school girls team who also won gold at Nationals! Team sports can bring so Alexa Nguyen in action on the field many benefits to children in relation to their development and social interactions. Upon asking the girls what they love most about the sport, they all expressed how passionate they were about hockey and how much fun this team sport is. ‘I just love playing Hockey and everything about it. Hockey is loads of fun and such a great way to make new friends,’ explains Lara. Positivity Prevails at Arana Netball Club A monthly update from Arana Netball Club Covid may have disrupted our netball season but it certainly didn’t dampen our spirits!
As soon as we were given the go ahead to return to netball, our players and officials could not wait to get underway. With restrictions still in place at the end of the nine week blast, our annual trophy presentation evening was modified to suit. In true Arana Netball style, everyone The Hills Echo's 2020 Positive or adapted to join in on Pointless award winner, a different type of Isabella Barton event. One by one teams arrived at the courts to hear words of praise from their proud coaches and receive their 2020 medallion. We were also very fortunate to have the support of The Hills Echo in acknowledging a very special club member for our ‘Positive or Pointless’ award.
www.echo-news.com.au
Positive or Pointless, what is it? It’s showing good sportsmanship on and off the court. It’s approaching new, different or difficult experiences with a positive attitude. It’s parents/coaches and officials being proud of players’ achievements, regardless of the scoreboard, and it’s being part of something that supports self-esteem and personal growth. I am proud to say that this behaviour is demonstrated across Arana Netball Club at all levels, however this does make choosing just one recipient each year a little challenging! This year’s Hills Echo Positive or Pointless award recipient showed the type of courage and resilience that models the very reason sport plays an integral role in personal growth. It’s our pleasure to announce the recipient of the 2020 Echo News Positive or Pointless award is Isabella Barton. Each week Isabelle's confidence grew and her enthusiasm to take the court with some very experienced players is a credit to her resilience. Isabella was 100% a team player and her growth as a netballer this year was significant. Congratulations Isabella! New Multipurpose Kitchen for the Kids!
What happens when demand in the school Tuckshop rapidly outgrows the current kitchen space? A visionary P&C Association comes to life and begins planning a major renovation project – that’s what! And this is exactly what happened at Patricks Road State School. Plans began in early 2019 for a major kitchen renovation, which was kicked off by the inaugural Colour Explosion Event to help the Patricks Road State School P&C Association raise the funds required. Extensive research went into identifying what changes were needed. Tuckshop staff and P&C members took themselves off on excursions to other renovated school Tuckshops for inspiration. It was identified quickly that there was considerable merit in combining food preparation requirements for both the Tuckshop and the Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) service, which is also ran by the P&C. Having a functional and multipurpose kitchen space could include the introduction of new services, and more extensive catering options for groups within the school community. Concept designs were finalised in early 2020 and an independent Project Manager was appointed to take the project through procurement, construction and finalisation. Construction began in July and completed in mid-September, ready to re-open at the beginning of Term 4. Whilst the school kids are super excited about this new facility, no one is more thrilled with the outcome of this major project, which was fully funded by the Patricks Road SS P&C Association, than the fabulous Tucky Team and OSHC Cook! Thank you Pats Road community: past, present and future!

Georgie - the OSHC cook, Gayle Mann and Glenn Pfeffer from the Tucky Team, Katrina Bray - VP Major Projectswith school Principal Danielle Priday and students.
What does the Parents & Citizens (P&C) Committee do? The Patricks Road State School P&C is a group of community minded parents and citizens, who work in a voluntary capacity. They also take on a more formal role to assist the school in providing feedback on school policies and activities; additional resources to enhance student learning; and opportunities for parents to be involved in their child’s education. To support this financially, the Patricks Road SS P&C operate three small businesses, an Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) facility, a school Tuckshop and a Uniform Shop. Each of these, in addition to offering an invaluable service to the school community, generate a moderate income for the P&C. 100% of the profits from these businesses are invested back into the school.

Bowling at Samford can bring so many benefits
Have you ever thought of starting the wonderful game of Bowls, but had no clue where to start?
Bowling can provide many health benefits which include; improved fitness, coordination and skill development along with improved mental wellbeing and, of course, there is the social benefit of feeling part of a community. Here we have ‘A Beginner’s Tale’ from local Maria about her journey into the game with the Samford District Bowls Club. I had been thinking of commencing Bowls for some time. My husband happened to be out shopping earlier this year when he met our neighbours, Pam and Chris. He mentioned to them that I was interested in starting bowls. That evening I was contacted by the Club Coach, Janice Ridley. I later met with her for an introductory session. Three weeks later COVID arrived and unfortunately my sessions had to stop. Three months later I was again contacted by the club about recommencing my coaching sessions, along with two other bowlers, Helen and Barry. I have since joined the club, continued with coaching and obtained my uniform and bowls. I cannot believe how enjoyable the social mornings at Samford are, bowling out in the fresh air with good company. I remember feeling nervous before and during my first game. Everyone was very friendly and encouraging. I enjoy the fellowship of the members whose patience and encouragement has been greatly appreciated. One day I hope that I may be able to offer the same encouragement to other new members as has been shown to me by members of the Samford Bowls Club. Maria During the month of November, the Samford District Bowls Club is holding free ‘Come and Try’ sessions so this is a perfect opportunity to give the game a go! Sessions will be

held every Tuesday and Wednesday in November, along with another session taking place on Sunday 22nd November from 1pm - 4pm. The Samford District Bowls Club is a friendly club, welcoming all members and visitors and is ideally located in the beautiful Samford Valley, only a 15 minute drive from Ferny Grove. The club has synthetic greens with retractable shades, which make playing in the Queensland summer much more enjoyable. In addition, the clubhouse is air conditioned with a light and airy atmosphere. Unlike many other bowls clubs, ladies and men are combined into one club and all social days are a mix of both sexes. Every player wishing to play will be selected to play. Connecting The Hills Direct to Brisbane and Beyond
An artists impression of what the new bikeway may look like
The Hills District prides itself on its leafy liveability and soon it might be able to boast its commutability as well.
Council is calling for feedback on a plan to connect Ferny Hills directly to the Kedron Brook bikeway and beyond. Proposed design elements and a digital flythrough of what it could look like have now been unveiled for this new shared pedestrian and cycleway. Mayor Peter Flannery said the proposed pathway goes through Harry Evans Park to link Dinterra Avenue with the popular Kedron Brook Bikeway, which stretches to Mitchelton, Nundah, the city and beyond. ‘This project would complete a crucial missing link between the Hills District and Brisbane’s northern suburbs for cyclists and pedestrians,’ he said. ‘We’re always looking for ways to enhance the lifestyle of

The Hills Organic Garden's (HOG) street library, located at Fishlips Seafood Cafe, Ferny Hills is looking terrific after a quick renovation.
Moreton Bay, and active transport is becoming increasingly popular for all the right reasons: it’s environmentally friendly, cheap, healthy and social. ‘With more and more residents getting on their bike or walking in the wake of COVID-19, there’s been a big call from the community for this type of infrastructure. ‘By linking to the popular Kedron Brook Bikeway, there’s an opportunity to attract people from Brisbane to retailers in the Hills District, and beyond to Samford, Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious, bringing with them cash to splash on coffees or food to boost the local economy.’ Councillor Matt Constance (Div 10) said he expected locals would welcome better infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians but wants to hear what the community has to say. ‘It’s called The Hills District for a reason - it’s not the easiest place to get around on two wheels - and that’s exactly why we need to invest in paths to get people off the busy roads like Patrick Road while making it easier to connect to our local schools, parks, shopping and activities centres,’ he said. ‘The design proposes fauna-friendly LED lighting while restoring vegetation to ensure the natural environment is not only protected but also improved. ‘Safety for our residents is one of my main priorities, which is why we’re looking to install CCTV cameras and fencing from neighbouring properties as part of the design. ‘For families, plans for a new playground are being developed to encourage you to stop and feed the ducks when passing through.’ Moreton Bay Regional Council supports a healthy and active lifestyle for residents by investing in safe, efficient, reliable and integrated transport networks. Community consultation closes on Monday, 30 November 2020.To have your say on the proposed pathway, please visit https://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/Services/Projects/ Consultation
After HOG's AGM last month, it was agreed that the library was in need of a little TLC. The library has received a new lick of paint, a new lock and a brand new roof thanks to Trevor & Vicki Oliver. There is no doubt that the Street Library revolution is bringing neighbourhoods together and the HOG library primarily stocks gardening books for the young, the old and everyone in between, however other books are welcomed!

Boost in health care treatment options for Brisbane’s north
North West Private Hospital has completed its $55 million expansion after reaching capacity in 2019. The expansion, which caters for the ongoing population boom on Brisbane’s northside, will enable more complex procedures with new technological support.
The redevelopment will vastly increase the hospital’s capacity – from 101 to 150 beds, enlarging the infusion / oncology service from 6 to 10 chairs, increasing the number of theatres and procedure rooms from 9 to 14 and including the commissioning of a new six-bed Intensive Care Unit. North West Private Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Chris Murphy, said the development was great news for residents of Brisbane’s northern suburbs. ‘We are experiencing huge population growth in this region, and being just 9 kilometres from the CBD, North West Private provides an excellent choice for residents wanting world class private health facilities close to home. ‘This project not only expands and modernises our existing facilities, but also includes the construction of a new multi-storey building including a new Day Rehabilitation Unit and Early Parenting Centre,’ Mr Murphy said. The hospital can now provide further sound support in clinical decisions, surgical confidence and it can help enhance patient care.
Page 12 - November 2020, The Hills Echo
The newly expanded North West Private Hospital
The expansion also includes a new multi-storey carpark that will provide more than 350 free carparks to staff, patients, and visitors. ‘It was important to us to maintain free parking here at North West Private Hospital because it’s just one less thing patients and their families need to worry about - we’d rather they focus on their health,’ Mr Murphy said. The hospital has also introduced the latest Stryker Advanced Imaging technology in two of their new operating theatres - a first for any hospital in Queensland. ‘These are the first theatres in Queensland to combine the market-leading technology of 4K fluorescence visualisation with an improved image process flow. It means the surgeon is able to visualise anatomy in a way they have not been able to before and will really enhance the patient’s experience,’ Mr. Murphy said. This redevelopment means that Brisbane’s northside now has access to the state of the art, quality care in maternity, cancer care, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, paediatrics, plastic surgery, dermatology, and gastroenterology.

A Tremendous History of the Tramway
Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed ‘The Brisbane Tramway Museum Society (BTMS) 1980, the Governor Sir James Ramsay officially opened the invites any person who is interested in the preservation Museum’s doors. of Brisbane’s historic trams to attend the first public Building on this success, the BTMS continued to make steady meeting of the Society. The meeting will be held at progress in the development of the museum complex. The the Druids Hall in Little Roma Street on the evening 1990’s saw a period of consolidation at the museum. A new building was erected to display tramway related artefacts of 5th July 1968 at 7.30 pm.’ Made in a circular that was distributed by the society, this appeal and struck a chord with the public. The meeting was well attended by people from all walks of life and some of these people have continued their association with the society to the present day! The meeting enthusiastically supported the establishment of a tramway museum. Buoyed by this show of support, the newly formed society set about securing a suitable site for the museum. Funds were raised to finance the project and negotiations were entered into with the Brisbane City Council for the acquisition of a representative collection of Brisbane’s trams. The negotiations with the Council were speedily concluded with 20 trams, two trolley buses and a vast quantity of equipment being passed over to the society. Unfortunately efforts to secure a suitable site proved more difficult. As a temporary measure, the museum was housed in a disused tile factory adjacent to Ferny Grove Railway Station. It was not until March 1972 that the present site became available. With a permanent home secured, work began in earnest, laying the foundations for the future. Car sheds were erected, the electricity supply was installed, and the track was put down. 1980 will be remembered as the year that the society ‘stood on its feet’ in the eyes of the public. and to house archival records. This building also doubles as the museum’s shop where books and other souvenirs can be bought. In addition, workshop facilities were improved in this period and electric power distribution was upgraded throughout the museum. In 2001, the Museum gratefully received a special payment from the Queensland Government to enable major improvements to be made. As a result, the society undertook projects that included: • The construction of a new engineering workshop. • The renovation of an existing workshop that can now house the two trolley buses. • The construction of another new building for the purpose of maintaining and restoring trams. This building has two tram tracks laid inside. • The repositioning of tram tracks, including the laying of a triangular junction, both to give access to the tram restoration building and also to enable trams to be turned so as to even the wear on the wheel flanges. The society is now in a solid position to advance with further developments including the restoration of trams and a trolley bus. In the longer term, the society will look to extend the track to enable visitors to experience a longer ride. The Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by Brisbane City Council.

How to start talking about mental health
We all know that tending to our mental health is equally as important as our physical health.
For many older Australians, depression and feelings of isolation or loneliness can be common. More likely to experience physical illness or personal loss, our elderly loved ones sometimes find themselves struggling to ask for help. I encourage everyone to check in with their older relatives, friends, and neighbours and start the conversation about their mental health and wellbeing. Reduce the stigma Discussions around mental health are becoming more common place, however it is still seldom talked about amongst older generations. Some older people have never spoken about how they feel because it wasn’t normalised when they were growing up. Others worry that they will be treated differently if they talk to someone about how they are feeling. Not wanting to feel like a burden, they often keep feelings of sadness and seclusion to themselves. If you have a loved one that you suspect may be suffering from loneliness or depression, talking can be the easiest way to reduce stigma. Normalising conversations around emotions can make it easier to identify risks and manage problems. But these conversations can be tricky. Here are some tips on how to ask if someone is okay. Find a safe space Think about a quiet, safe space to have the discussion. Let them know that you are there to talk about how they are feeling, be clear you are there to listen, and provide support.
Page 18 - November 2020, The Hills Echo
Show you care Beyondblue provides a number of conversation starters that encourage a healthy discussion about how your loved one is feeling, such as “You haven’t seemed yourself lately – is everything OK?” Take action At the end of the conversation, work out what help you can provide. This may be as simple as a weekly phone call or helping with weekly tasks like gardening or shopping. Ask an expert Friends and family can be a great help during difficult times, but it is important to get expert advice. Consider encouraging them to book an appointment with their GP to discuss the feelings they are experiencing. Beyondblue also provides a range of free advice and information to help support your loved one. Talking about isolation and depression can sometimes be a daunting task for both sides, but starting a conversation can be the first step to better health for your loved one. Terrific tools of the trade
News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club
The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club has noticed an increase in membership since the COVID-19 pandemic commenced. We are grateful to the increase in new members for it has helped to spread the burden of costs which the club has had to incur to keep the organisation functioning.
As the weather is warming up, many members are aiming for the indoors side of the hobby as compared to the cooler months where lapidary/rockhounds tend to go out and about looking for gemstone materials. Many of our members have a tumbler, saw or grinder at home, as it is quite easy to spend an hour or two working with these machines in the warmer months. However, there are still aspects of the hobby where it is beneficial to be a member of a club. Our club has large saws which individuals don’t generally have at home. We have a 24” and a 16” slab saw which take up considerable space and are both capable of cutting larger rocks. Also, in our workshop we have a reciprocating lap which, besides being expensive to buy, takes up a considerable amount of space. These laps are used to polish flat surfaces of rocks after they have been cut on a diamond saw. These laps need silicon carbide grit placed on the lap and water in order to grind the stone down. As the grit gets worn finer you have to clean the lap off and place a finer grit on the lap until the stone is ready to polish.
Tumbled Agate Generally, the lap is turned over, and on the other side there is a piece of carpet which is used to polish the stones with the addition of a polish compound. This compound is Tin Oxide and it is mixed with water. The time to polish the stones depends on the hardness of the stones but generally six to eight hours on the carpet will be sufficient. Information regarding our club can be obtained on our website: www.mitcheltondistrictsgemclub.wordpress.com or our Facebook Page: Mitchelton and District Gem Club Inc. If you would like to have a chat to someone regarding our hobby, do not hesitate to contact John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

Postponed weddings leads to spike in home sales Caitriona Ledgewood and fiancé David Floyd are among a growing number of couples swapping wedding plans for house keys, choosing to use funds saved for ceremonies postponed due to COVID-19 for a deposit on a new property.
Ms Ledgewood said when COVID-19 put a hold on their dream destination wedding in Ireland, the couple were able to find a silver lining by bringing forward plans to purchase their first home, in the Ellendale community in Upper Kedron. ‘We had been saving for our wedding with the dream of buying our first home not long after, but with all that’s happening with COVID-19 we decided to do things a little differently and buy our home first,’ she said. ‘When we initially started looking we never even considered building, because we had this preconceived idea that building would be more expensive and stressful than buying an established home. ‘While searching suburbs close to the city we quickly realised our choices as first home buyers were pretty slim with our only options being small townhouses or renovation projects and neither worked for our family. ‘We started to consider moving further away from the city but didn’t want to add travel time to our work commutes, so when we came across Ellendale in Upper Kedron, just 12km from the CBD, we felt like we struck gold. ‘With our wedding in Ireland on hold, we decided we didn’t want to settle for anything we weren’t happy with and building meant we could design our perfect home.’

David, Caitriona with daughter Savannah - happy to swap their wedding plans for house keys! Building a four bedroom, two bathroom home with Fresh Homes, Caitriona says despite the couple's initial reservations, building their first home has been an exciting journey. ‘We are currently renting so we were a little worried about if we could afford to rent and build but after speaking with Fresh Homes and the Ellendale team, we realised it was a lot easier than we had anticipated,’ she said. ‘When we visited Ellendale for the first time we immediately fell in love with the area. ‘The area was very family friendly and we noticed there were lots of kids our little girl could play with. We wanted to live somewhere we would feel safe to raise our children and Ellendale ticked a lot of boxes for us. ‘Upper Kedron is also such a beautiful, family friendly suburb with a really relaxed vibe to it. There are lots of options for parks, walkways and the park is proving a big hit with our pups. “Finding out were weren’t able to have our dream wedding had really put a damper on this year but deciding to buy our first home and waiting to get married has been a blessing in disguise and we’re excited for our future here at Ellendale.’ Ellendale is being developed by Cedar Woods Properties, with Senior Development Manager Peter Starr saying activity from young buyers has been strong, counting towards nearly $$30 million in sales made in the community in 2020. ‘We have seen a number of first time buyers and young couples looking to upgrade decide that now is the right time to do so for a number of reasons, including low interest rates, competitive land pricing and the $25,000 HomeBuilder incentive,’ he said. ‘Some, like Caitriona and David, had not been planning to buy this year but have found themselves in a position where they have funds set aside for weddings or travel that have now been postponed, and have decided to tick another goal off their list by purchasing a home instead. ‘They are also realising that while they will be able to get married and travel in future, blocks of land do get snapped up quite quickly in popular areas like Ellendale, so waiting may mean they miss out on their preferred lot in their dream location. ’ Homesites in Ellendale are priced from $385,000. ‘PARKLIFE’ - A Guide to our Local Parks
We have some of the best parks around our region and this new local parks guide will showcase just a few of them. If you are looking for some new places to take the kids or trying to find a new spot for your weekend picnic then we hope this guide will give you some inspiration! In typical Echo style, and to get the best local insight, the parks featured here are in the form of reviews from our local residents.
HONEYEATER PARK
Location: Honeyeater Park, Upper Kedron Reviewed by Carmel Wakefield from Upper Kedron Carmel’s review: A fantastic park with ample shaded seating areas, multiple grassed picnic spots and a BBQ. The play equipment caters to a wide range of ages and abilities. The open grass area beside the park allows for plenty of additional play options such as soccer and flying a kite. Best of all the locals are super friendly!
MATTHEW HAWTHORNE RESERVE
Location: Lancewood Dr, Albany Creek Reviewed by Kylie Jackson from Albany Creek Kylie’s review: A great reserve tucked away in the back streets of Albany Creek. It has an expansive green space for the older kids to kick a ball about in and also a small playground for younger children. The playground is complete with a climbing frame, 2 swings and a couple of other bits of equipment. It isn’t fenced but is placed well away from traffic. The best part about the park is the HUGE flying fox there (about 40m) that is fantastic for kids of all ages. My 10 year old boys can spend hours on it (if no one else is there!). There is a shaded picnic bench and table, however no toilets. The park is also located on a awesome walking track, so bring the bikes or scooters and stretch your legs, too!
LESLIE PATRICK PARK
Location: Dawson Parade, Arana Hills Reviewed by Georgia Wright from Arana Hills Georgia’s review: A sand-based wonderland of curlywhirly climbing equipment, swing sets, monkey bars, and a vast space to run amuck in—welcome to Leslie Patrick Park Playground! Named after a pioneer grazier, this playground is a treasure in the Hills, sprawled out beneath a shady tree canopy. It’s fully fenced in—meaning parents have no need to stress about run-away kiddies—and it has toilet facilities as well as an undercover BBQ and seating area to enjoy. Adjacent to the playground is a huge oval and netball courts to burn some energy on. Not to mention, snaking its way around Leslie Patrick Park’s perimeter is a bike lane for any keen little riders. With carefully placed obstacles and a fun climbing apparatus, children of all ages are able to have a crack. My personal favourite element of the park is the musical area, where children can play to the beat of their own drum (literally!). There’s safe and accessible parking beside the playground and across the street, where places such as Kmart, Guzman y Gomez and Hungry Jacks are situated. A cool playground, a mammoth oval and delicious lunch options right next door—why not make a whole day out of it!

CABBAGE TREE CREEK RESERVE PLAYGROUND
Location: Francis Road, Everton Hills Reviewed by Robert Smith from Everton Hills A great park for the little ones. All the play equipment is quite new and includes a slide, monkey bars, climbing frame, swings, rope swing and. There is also a sheltered picnic bench and tables there too. There area is also shaded and has lighting. The playground is located within parkland and the adjoining trails offer lengthy walking tracks that meander along Cabbage Tree Creek. Many of these trails link onto other playgrounds and fitness equipment, making it an excellent walking or biking track.
CITY VIEW RESERVE
Location: End of Barber Road, Ferny Hills Reviewed by The Hills Echo Team Not your traditional ‘playground’- there’s no play equipment here. Park your car at the end of Barber Road, Ferny Hills and stroll around 150m along the paved path that winds through the reserve to find a glorious outlook of the city. There is a bench where you can relax and take in the peaceful, leafy surroundings whilst enjoying the magnificent view. The path then continues on for another approx. 350m through the leafy reserve. However, if you enjoy a bush walk or two, the reserve acts as a bit of a gateway to the Samford Conservation Park, where you can find a variety of excellent bushwalking trails to enjoy.

GRAB THAT GRANT!
Welcome our monthly column, Grab that Grant, which provides invaluable information about accessing and applying for funding. This information is brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall. As founder of the Little Project Management Company, Carolyn has a Carolyn McCall wealth of knowledge and an insight into the industry.
‘Council Grants - Help is at hand!’
This month I spoke to the Moreton Bay Regional Council Grants Team. I always like to encourage community organisations to build a relationship with potential funders and Local Council. Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Grants Team are a wealth of knowledge, are really enthusiastic about programs happening in the community, and are all really, really friendly!! Here is our conversation: Are you open to answering questions about or discussing project ideas with community organisations? Yes! As a local Council, we like to hear what community organisations are working on or considering in our region. What many people don’t know is that you can talk to us before you start an application. Once organisations have started an application in SmartyGrants, grants officers can view the draft application (with permission and at the request of the applicant). We can check that all questions have been answered and all required documentation has been attached. Do you like seeing collaborations between community organisations in the region? Can you help organisations make connections within the region?
Power and Performance that won’t break the bank
Most funding bodies like to see a collaborative approach in the delivery of projects, and this is the same with Council. Sharing knowledge and resources can strengthen the delivery of a project, encourage greater participation, avoid duplication of resources, and result in better outcomes for the community. Council may also be able to help organisations who seek information about similar groups in the region. What are your main tips and tricks to being successful in a grant round? 1. Read the guidelines to ensure the project fits the grant program objectives. We usually have our funding rounds decided well ahead of time, so you can always check our grants and funding webpage and plan in advance. 2. Ensure you understand the requirements of the grants program. It’s so easy to miss some really important things. For instance, what is eligible expenditure—and what isn’t. Never forget to read the guidelines and if you have any questions, give us a call! 3. Be clear about what you propose to do and what the purpose of your project is, and make sure to highlight its benefits to the organisation and local community. Sometimes, you know a project so well yourself that you forget that others need the background information on how it all fits together. 4. Demonstrate the need for the project—what evidence have you got that supports the identified need? Are you also able to demonstrate the support of the community or your target group?
Does it make a difference how big or small a community organisation is applying for a grant? We welcome applications from organisations of all sizes. What we look for are applications that can demonstrate a benefit to residents of the Moreton Bay Region, show value for money, and provide evidence that they can undertake the project. I would love to hear from more organisations doing interesting things – if you want to chat about grants, tell me about programs you are running, or just want to say hello, please contact me at carolyn@lpmcompany.com.au

A new chapter awaits Birralee Childcare
Birralee childcare centre
Page 30 - November 2020, The Hills Echo
Moreton Bay Regional Council is seeking expressions of interest (EOI’s) from non-profit early childhood education providers to assume the governance and management of Birralee Child Care Centre in Ferny Hills. Whilst serving the needs of local families for 43 years, Birralee has built an excellent reputation in the industry for providing high-quality, communitybased early childhood education and care. The centre is proud to have a 100% occupancy rate, along with ‘Exceeding’ the National Quality Rating, which is no mean feat. The direct governance and management of childcare centres by local governments was common in the 1980’s. However, due to the industry’s ever changing directives and becoming heavily regulated, many local council’s have ceased their management of centres as their structures are simply not set up in ways that best support this type of service. ‘We want to make sure that the service continues to grow and diversify in-line with industry trends,’ Mayor Peter Flannery confirmed. ‘So, we’re on the hunt for a reputable non-profit child care specialist to take Birralee into its next chapter.’ Council is hopeful that at the end of the EOI process a new provider will be identified that can continue the legacy of the high-quality service that the community has come to expect from this popular local childcare centre. Councillor Matt Constance (Div 10) said the Birralee child care service would remain a focal point of the Ferny Hills community. ‘Birralee is home to many great memories for many generations of local families, who have watched their children grow, learn and play there for 43 years,’ he revealed. ‘Council’s decision to seek a community partner for the service will help ensure the viability and long-term future of the Birralee community. ‘It’s very important that the community-based status and ethos remains, and the continuity of high-quality services to the service’s 91 customers is not negatively impacted.’ Council is committed to ensuring that the transition from Council’s governance and management to the new provider is as seamless as possible and that it can achieve the best outcome for all of the Birralee community. For more information about the EOI process, contact Council’s call centre on 3205 0555. www.echo-news.com.au

Just some of the harvested goodies included; cabbages, beans, broadbeans, snow peas, baby spinach, radish, silverbeet, kale, tomatoes, plus so much more! The strawberry garden didn’t let the hard working team at HOG down either as there were many feeds of strawberries enjoyed over the cooler months. However, with the warmer months approaching, the planting has quietened down and the gardens will receive a well earned rest. Nonetheless, members of the HOG community will still meet on a Sunday as there will still be plenty of work to do to maintain the gardens and, of course, the plants always need watering. The meeting times will change during the summer months to the afternoon (from 3pm to 5pm) as this will be a much cooler time of the day to tend to the garden. The new summer time meeting will commence on the first Sunday of November. Although the planting regime will not be as vigorous in summer, the group will still have some cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes and zucchinis growing. A bit about HOG: The Hills Organic Garden (HOG) is a community venture where volunteers work together to grow a chemical – free harvest they can all share. The garden is set up on land leased from the Moreton Bay Regional Council at Bunya Road, Bunya, next to the Off-Leash Dog Park. The HOG community are a friendly and inclusive group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables in a sustainable way using organic principles. People of all ages are welcome. They meet together on Sundays. Membership fees per year are $15 for adults, $25 for family, and $ 5 for Juniors. All money goes to the garden. Visit www.hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0407 582 980 for information and to apply for a membership.
So much more than ‘Sausage Sizzling’ at Bunnings!
A monthly update from the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club by Paul Ryan
It is not uncommon when asked - ‘What do the Lions Clubs do?’the answer invariable is ‘Well, they are a group of older people who sell Christmas Cakes and sausages at Bunnings along with Raffle tickets in the local shopping centre.’ While that is part of what we do, community service comes in all shapes and sizes and these actions that people see allow the club to: • Provide Christmas Hampers to those in need. • Purchase equipment for the elderly or disabled. • Continue to support local Medical Researchers to find that cures for diseases. • Provide “Assistance Dogs” to those in need, for hospital visits and for reading programmes in local schools. • Recycle used eyeglasses so that people in third world areas can regain their sight. • Provide shelter for families, where marriage breakdown may create a dangerous situation. • Support young people looking to find their way in life. So it is fair to say that the good old Bunnings Sausage and the Lions Christmas Cakes goes a long way! Open Invitation - Hills District Residents Aged 18 to 30 Many may see the Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club as a club for ‘Older People’. However, the group is interested in forming a new ‘Younger Persons Club’ to service the needs of young adults through: • Community Based Service • Meeting Like-Minded People in a safe and social environment The club would be self-managed and autonomous, however, the Keperra Lions would be there as support. Often, it can be difficult to meet like-minded people of a similar age in a non-threatening social environment, so why not register your interest in this new club by contacting the GVK Lions. Email cottontrees@bigpond.com or call 0409 688 675. More information can be found on www.lionsclubs.org.au

If you lodge with an Agent your lodgement time varies so, please come and see us if you are having concerns around lodging your returns. For those in business, and who may have previously received Job Keeper, you may now be finding it difficult to qualify for Job Keeper 2. Again, if you are concerned come and see us, we can put together cashflow forecasting for you and project out to see if you are likely to incur a cashflow shortfall in the months ahead. It is also timely to review costs and profit margins, which we can help you with. Do not bury your head in the sand and hope everything will be ok, you need to be proactive and not reactive! Arana View's small numbers make a BIG noise! A monthly update from the Arana VIEW Club It was great to see many of our members again at our first meeting since March.
Numbers were small but we still made as much noise catching up with each other. Our guest speaker was retired police officer Tim Brinums, and he spoke about some of the investigations he was involved in during his police force days. He also introduced Pippa, who does a wonderful job as a therapy dog in various places in the community! The November meeting will be held on Wednesday 4th November at the Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade, Keperra, 10.15am for 11am start. There will be a Cent Auction during the meeting so bring along any of those unwanted items that are taking up space! The guest speaker for the meeting will be Jo Neary from the Zephyr Foundation. This organisation supports children who are affected by domestic violence. The December meeting will be held on Wednesday 2nd December. Plans are already underway to make it a great way to end this rather unpredictable year. Please remember to phone Carol on 3355 5349 if you are attending the meeting by midday on Monday 1st November. Please note, numbers are still restricted to 60 in the Function Room at Arana Leagues Club.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, My father has dementia and is presently placed in an Aged Care Facility. His dementia has not changed his ability to manipulate and wheedle. My childhood was not pleasant, he was an angry, emotionally abusive, nasty person. My Mother escaped by dying when I was fourteen. I was made to feel responsible for his happiness and well being. My needs were very, very secondary and nothing was ever good enough. I feel I have lived my life struggling against resentment and guilt to his endless demands. I had some measure of protection while my husband Jim was alive. It was his insistance that my father was placed in care and not as Dad wanted, with us. I have brought Dad home for the occasional overnight stay, but more often now when I visit he acts out terribly if I refuse to bring him home, but then he refuses to go back. He gets terribly upset saying he is afraid of dying (Dad is 86 and has a bad heart) and does not want to die alone etc etc. While so much in the past has been about manipulation and deceit, his fear and vulnerability seem real. I feel trapped. I keep on thinking about how much longer I have to be a prisoner to his demands but then I really feel for his fear and vulnerability and would hate for any human being to feel this way. I oscillate between the old resentment and guilt, then sadness for him. I’m sure I’d burn up with resentment if I took over more of the care of him like he wants, but if I don’t, how do I deal with the guilt?
Dear Sophie,
Let’s look at the physical facts, your Father is well taken care of and given his age and heart condition, he is in the right place where he can be given expert medical assistance and notification to you when needed. Death picks its own time. No matter how much you might want to be there and reassure him, in the end it is really beyond your control. He is extremely fortunate that he has a daughter who is far from giving up on him, has compassion and care enough to give the attention you do to his needs. There are two people here whose needs have to be considered. Your Father is well looked after. It is time to look after you. This is about setting firmer boundaries within yourself. When you have had a life time of conditioning that has entrenched a belief that approval, love or just peace will be gained by meeting another’s demands, the challenge to say NO, to look after yourself, is huge. Do you think that some how, if you can be there for him now; at the end of his life, ease his pain, give him some happiness
that this in turn will ease the pain and helplessness you felt as a child and later as an adolescent when your Mother died? The ultimate truth is that we are each responsible for our own happiness. Happiness, is a state of mind and like the feelings of resentment or guilt, is determined by the choices we make. How we interpret another’s actions is in turn based on how we see our self-esteem being validated or not by these actions and this choice is up to us. Your inability to make your Father happy does not define you or your worth, it defines your Father’s inability to recognise and feel gratitude and respect for your efforts. Look at what beliefs are binding you to your feelings of guilt and resentment. The challenge is having the courage to do what you need to do for yourself, saying No when you need to, to the demands of your Father and most of all “No!” to those thoughts you have that may be saying something like; “I am not a good person/daughter if I don’t do this”, or “he’ll feel/think, something negative if I don’t do whatever”. Listen to the thoughts that say “I am not responsible for my Fathers’ happiness, I am doing enough. He is well looked after. I also have a life and deserve the time and freedom to enjoy it now.” Doing what you can do for your Father now with a kindness and generosity of spirit is, I believe, where peace is found. Robin

Cloudland
A monthly update from the Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc.
The show WILL go on!
The Hills Players are very excited to announce that the planned 40th Anniversary Celebration, on 21st November will be going ahead.
Full details about the celebration is outlined on the flyer below and our local theatre group can't wait to present their one and only performance of the year. The review style evening of short plays, songs, poems, Christmas cheer (and cake), has something for everyone and promises to be a fun night. As the event will be a COVID Safe Event, numbers are restricted, so be sure to get in early with your bookings. The former glamorous dance hall at Cloudland
The 7th of November is the anniversary of the demolition of the iconic Cloudland dance hall and concert venue at Bowen Hills back in 1982.
To many locals in Brisbane’s north western suburbs and the Hills District, Cloudland would bring back many fond memories: school dances, concerts, receptions, debutant balls and similar. Many future husbands and wives would also have had their first meeting at a post-war dance at Cloudland of a Saturday night. Originally called Luna Park, Cloudland opened in August 1940 high on a hill via Montpelier Road. Its remarkable 18-metre high laminated roof arch made it a prominent feature, visible to thousands of Brisbane residents in surrounding suburbs. Inside, the venue was renowned for its decorative columns, sweeping curtains, domed sky lights and chandeliers. Over the years, Cloudland played host to several well-known artists and bands including Cold Chisel, The Police, The Bee Gees, Madness, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, The Saints and Midnight Oil. The demolition of Cloudland inspired the Oils to write their hit song ‘Dreamworld’. On 3rd February 1958, pioneering US rock’n’roll singer Buddy Holly played a concert at Cloudland. Eerily, exactly one year later – on 3 February 1959 – Buddy Holly would die in that tragic plane crash (aged just 22) near Clear Lake, Iowa along with Richie Valens and ‘the Big Bopper’. Although listed on the National Trust, Cloudland was demolished on the 7th November 1982, with no public notice, in the middle of the night by the Dean Brothers. It was a dubious decision under the then Bjelke Petersen state government which caused a massive outcry and protests. Unit development soon took place on the site at Bowen Hills. Who out there remembers Cloudland? Who has fond memories of a dance event, a concert viewed, or similar from years past? Feel free to share your stories with us. Visit our Facebook page or email enoggerahistory@gmail.com We’d love to hear from you. Take care, everyone, Andrew McMicking - President

Remembrance Day
War Chronicles from Our Veterans
Lest We Forget! These simple words are spoken at ANZAC Day Commemorations every year. But how do we ensure that as a nation, we don’t forget the sacrifices of these ordinary men and women whose actions and experiences were extraordinary? This Story Australia is a charity dedicated to capturing and preserving the significant moments of Australia’s history as told by those who experienced it first-hand via high-quality video documentaries.
Brought to you by

Laurie Woods Born 26th December 1922 I Born Deloraine, Tasmania Laurie Woods was a member of the 460 Squadron of Bomber Command. He was recognised with an Immediate Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross for flying a Bomber back to England after the pilot was wounded by shrapnel. Lawrie recounts how PTSD affected his relationships and personal life for many years after his service. He has lived on the south side of Brisbane in the Sunnybank area and you can often find him signing one of his four published novels at a Dymocks book store.
Richard Trevor Martin 15/03/1923 - 24/02/2020 I Born Mulvern, Victoria Dick was called up into the Army on the 5th of February 1943 and eventually transferred to the Air Force. He shares some tragic stories of his time in Bomber Command. On one such occasion he developed a burst appendix on a training flight and returned to base. The next day, whilst Dick was hospitalized for his illness, his crew went up without him and never returned, crashing into the North Sea. Dick reflects on a happy life in Queensland and has volunteered at the Sunnybank RSL Sub-branch right up to his death in February this year.
John Cyril Briggs Born 10th July 1924 I Born Leicester, England
John joined the Cubs and Scouts at a young age, and it was from there that he gained the skills that served him well for life. He was recruited into the RAF and recounts many humorous stories of times with mates. Upon moving to Australia John was employed as an Engineer with the Brisbane City Council and is responsible for the Centenary Bridge at Jindalee and its rebuild after the floods of 1974. John lives in Fairview Retirement Living at Pinjarra Hills. As previously mentioned, This Story is a not-for-profit charity. Their high quality documentaries are offered online 100% free of charge to the public and allow all Australians to develop a deeper understanding of some of Australian history’s most significant events. If you would like to offer support, donations can be made online at https://thisstory.com.au/donate/. Any amount - large or small - will go towards the cost of producing these historical documentaries. Alternatively, if you are a local business and would like to "Sponsor a Story" please get in touch! Leaving their stories untold would not only be a shame to our current generations but would deny future generations the opportunity to see history come to life through these courageous men and women.

Remembrance Day
A place for reflection We will From the Samford Museum remember them An update from The Gap RSL Sub-Branch
Personnel serving in World War 1
The new Australian Flag presented by the Federal Member for Ryan, Mr Julian Simmons, flying the new flagpole with the President and Committee, Members and Guests.
At precisely the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 , all guns fell silent on the Western Front.
Originally called Armistice Day, it quickly became known as Remembrance Day, a day on which we pause for a moment’s silence to remember all those who made the supreme sacrifice in service to their country. It now commemorates all those who died in service to their country, in all conflicts, including peacekeeping operations. Various symbols are associated with Remembrance Day, especially our National Australian Flag, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Red Poppy. On Monday 12 October, Mr Julian Simmons, Member for the Federal seat of Ryan, on behalf of the Australian Government, presented a new Australian flag to the President of the Gap subBranch, Mr Rod Adamson, and his committee at ‘Nullagundi’. The flag was flown for the first time on the new flagpole which was presented earlier in the year by Councillor Steve Toomey, Councillor for the Gap Ward, who has always been a strong supporter of the sub-branch. Both of these events mark small yet significant milestones for The Gap RSL Sub-Branch. The installation of the flagpole and the acquisition of the Australian Flag are due to the good work of members Tony Everett (and more recently) David Esler. The Remembrance Day Ceremony, on Wednesday 11th November, will take place in the Walton Bridge Reserve War Memorial; assembling at 10.30 am to be completed by 11.15 am. This will be a COVID safe event and all social distancing and sanitization recommendations will be followed. If you are feeling unwell on the day or are suffering from any cold or flu like symptoms, or if you have been to a COVID hotspot in the previous 14 days, please do not attend. Volunteers will be selling poppies and other ANZAC-related merchandise in The Gap Village Shopping Centre in the week prior to Remembrance Day and you are urged to support our activities. You are also encouraged to attend the ceremony in the Walton Bridge Reserve War Memorial - remember to bring a hat! If you cannot attend, please pause at 11am, no matter how briefly, to reflect on the freedoms that we enjoy here in Australia and to honour those who paid the supreme sacrifice. ‘WE WILL REMEMBER THEM’ - ‘LEST WE FORGET’ www.echo-news.com.au
Remembrance Day is a day to give thanks to, and reflect on, the service given to our country by service personnel in which ever conflict they have been called.
The Samford Museum has numerous research materials and large displays featuring local service men and women. For a quiet time of reflection, visit Samford’s Avenue of Honour in its idyllic setting. We have much to be thankful for. Lest we forget. The Avenue stretches along Mt Samson Rd from Burton Lane to the Samford Soccer grounds. The Avenue can be visited at any time and information provided by the museum is on permanent display there. As the school year comes to a close, a review of pupils’ learning during the year takes place. For grandparents this often stirs memories of their own school days and learning. A noticeable change is the titles given to some subjects. The Preface of a 1955 Queensland Social Studies text book includes, ‘The arrangement of material indicates a new approach to the subject.’ The teaching of Social Studies involves more than memorisation of facts from Civics, Geography and History. A subtopic ‘Homes and Furniture’, which I’m sure today’s children learn about, is relevant to our districts where the timber industry is well documented. People all over the world have been very clever in making use of the gifts of nature for their needs. For example, Australia’s first settlers found that the country provided some of the best forests in the world that contained Eucalyptus trees which provided hard strong timber for houses, buildings, wharves, bridges and more. In addition, some forests also provided tall pines and cedars for homes and furniture. For decades, the bush echoed the ring of axes and song of cross cuts saws as timber getters harvested these valuable resources, (information sourced from the book ‘Homes and Furniture’). However, the axe and crosscut-saw have been replaced by less laborious modern machinery such as chainsaws, which has resulted in the skills needed to use the tools of the pioneering days have sadly almost been lost. Nonetheless, some of these skills have been recorded. Following a successful RADF grant, and commitment of a professional video photographer, a 30minute DVD was produced called ‘Tools on the Wall’ which features timber workers from throughout the Moreton Bay region. Copies can be purchased from the Samford Museum. Dickson News
from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON
A Message from Peter We are quickly approaching the end of the school year and I thought it would be a good time to let you know about some of the projects I’ve been working on with local schools in the Hills District. Patricks Road State School is receiving a new school hall thanks to $1.75 million in federal funding. This was one of my commitments at the 2019 election and I am pleased to let you know that the project is progressing well. If all goes according to plan, we should see works starting prior to Christmas this year. In addition to this, the Henderson Road Campus of The Prince of Peace Lutheran College is receiving a new PA system through the Local Schools Community fund (LCFS). This is just one of many schools in our Dickson community receiving funding for projects such as facilities upgrades, educational equipment, new programs and more through the LCFS. It has been a great opportunity to work together with our local schools and school communities and I am pleased to have secured the funding for these upgrades. 2021 Australia Day Dickson Awards Nominations are now open for the 2021 Australia Day Dickson Awards. If you know someone who has gone above and beyond to serve our community, nominate them for an award today. To nominate someone go to peterdutton.com. au/2021dicksonawards

Federal Budget 2020 Recently, the Morrison Government handed down the federal budget and with it released the government’s Economic Recovery Plan for Australia. As a government, we have worked hard to try to keep as many people in jobs as possible. Our comprehensive support plan including JobKeeper, JobSeeker, $750 cash payments to households and the CashFlow Boost has helped cushion the blow and keep businesses open and Australians in jobs. This strong action has also provided a launching pad into the next phase of our plan with this budget. We have announced a range of measures designed to create jobs, rebuild our economy and secure our future. These measures include: • $7.5 billion in national transport infrastructure to boost the national economy, deliver safer roads and create 30,000 direct and indirect jobs. • Support for 100,000 apprentices and trainees to help get young people into a job • 12,000 additional university places to make sure Australians have the right skills to get a job • An additional 10,000 places under the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme to help first home buyers get into the market and support jobs in the housing construction sector • A $250 million injection into regional Australia to encouraging more Australians to travel and experience a home-grown holiday, boosting regional jobs and local economies. • Taking action to secure Australia’s long-term fuel supply to keep prices low for consumers and to create more than 1000 new jobs by building a new domestic fuel storage capability • Credit and insolvency reforms to help keep businesses in business and Australians in jobs and much more. Infrastructure investment Here in Queensland, the federal government has committed funding to building vital pieces of infrastructure. Our plan will create thousands of jobs whilst building the roads, rail links and water security our state needs for the future. The government is prioritising projects which are ‘shovel ready’ because we want to create jobs now. The budget will see almost $1.3 billion in federal funding spent on projects right here in our state. This includes a major contribution of $750 million to the much needed second M1 between Loganholme and Nerang creating 700 jobs and easing traffic congestion on the coast. Closer to home, there is new funding announced to upgrade the Beams Road level crossing to go with the federal funding already on the table for projects like duplicating Linkfield Road overpass, upgrading Youngs Crossing and building the missing on and off ramps at Dohles Rocks Road. I will continue working hard to get these projects delivered so you can get home safer and sooner. What’s important to you? With your help, and by working together, I know we can get the upgrades, facilities and opportunities our community needs to be even better. So please let me know what’s important to you. Drop by to one of my mobile office visits or get in touch with me get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov. au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities. The LNP will invest $80 million in major upgrades to expand school facilities and increase available places and subsidise childcare training to address chronic worker shortages. The LNP’s funding boost will provide: • $60 million to expand and upgrade playground and school facilities to accommodate before and after school care, to increase the number of places available for working families. • $10 million to address chronic staffing shortages through subsidised training under a childcare worker training course for at least 10,000 more workers. • $10 million to establish a centralised unit in the Department of Education to coordinate before and after school care agreements.
LNP TO MAKE QUEENSLAND THE RECYCLING STATE An LNP Government will open a solar panel recycling facility in South-East Queensland and work with councils to build new roads from recycled plastic as part of a visionary plan to create new jobs and protect our environment. The LNP’s plan to make Queensland the Recycling State will: • Build green roads from recycled plastic More than 80% of road asphalt can be made from recycled products. The LNP’s $50m trial will increase green road construction and develop new guidelines for future roadbuilding projects. • Establish a solar panel recycling industry Without future action, more than 100,000 tonnes of solar panels are predicted to enter Australia’s waste stream by 2035. The LNP will initiate a reverse auction to establish a solar panel recycling facility in Queensland. • Ban batteries and e-waste from landfill Electronic waste contains valuable non-renewable resources like gold, copper, zinc, and aluminium, as well as hazardous materials. An LNP Government will expand recovery facilities and launch a public education to reduce e-waste going into landfill before legislating a ban on the practice by 2024. • Support recycling research and development The LNP will work with Queensland universities to establish centres of recycling excellence to encourage innovation in the industry. • Fast-track approvals for recycling infrastructure An LNP Government will fast-track planning approvals for new and better recycling infrastructure. St William’s Student Catches J.K. Rowling’s Eye By Kate and Alyssa, Year 6 (pictured right)
J.K Rowling, international best-selling author, is about to release her next children’s book, The Ickabog. Rowling had never intended to release The Ickabog, but COVID-19 struck, and she decided to release her book chapter by chapter online for a limited time so that children could read it whilst in lockdown. The Ickabog is due to be released on November 10th. J.K Rowling decided to host a competition whereby the winners would have their illustrations published in the book. More than 18 000 children aged 7-12 from around the world entered the competition. Sofia B., a grade six student from St William’s School Grovely, was skilled enough to be one of the thirty-four winners. Talented Year student, She was blessed with the Sophia B. talent of drawing and put this to good use. Sofia said, "I entered the competition because J.K Rowling is an inspiration to my artistic creativity.” Sofia spent hours planning and perfecting every detail in her two illustrations that she submitted. She waited patiently for the judges to decide. Soon, she was shortlisted for her drawing of Lady Eslanda (one of the main characters) and had to deliver her illustration to the judges by mail for further examination. Sofia was filled with excitement when she received an email notifying her that she had been chosen as one of the winners. Her prize included an autographed copy of The Ickabog. The exhilarating news spread to her family, friends and school. Sofia said, “I couldn’t believe that out of more than 18 000 entries, I was one of the thirtyfour winners. I want to continue drawing and see where it can take me in the future.”
