Backpacks Brimming with Generosity
More often than not, when a child is placed in a foster home, they go with no more than the clothes on their back. There is no teddy to cuddle to provide comfort or familiar pyjamas to snuggle into, during what can be an incredibly traumatic time in their lives.
The Sweet Dreams and Good night wishes charity organisation aims to provide a ‘Care Bag’ to each child when they are placed into foster care. A ‘Care Bag’ is a backpack style bag that contains essential items to help them adjust to their new surroundings. Having their own backpack of items can help reduce anxiety and bring comfort to the child in such hard circumstances. For a second year, the Patricks Road State School (PRSS) Student Council, along with PRSS teacher Jasmine Molineux, ran a drive for items that can be included in the backpacks, over the first 3 weeks of term 3. Collection bags were placed in each classroom and student councillors encouraged participation and collected donations. Again, the incredible school community achieved a terrific result with 389 complete care bags being put together - smashing their 2019 record of 214 Care Bags! Jasmine Molineux was blown away by the generosity of the school community. ‘Each year it gets bigger and better! Families were so generous with their donations, with many families getting their children on board to put together a bag for a foster child their age,’ said Jasmine. ‘We also received donations from the wider community with 30 bags being donated from The Hills District Daycare centre and a few more from Albany Hills State School.’ Each bag contains items for boys and girls aged between 2 and

Method: Warm the water to dissolve the sugar then add the rest of the ingredients. The Tartaric acid prevents the juice from fermenting. It‘s quite hard to find. I purchased some from the IGA at Samford.

Dear Editor, Those of us that are not essential workers are currently sitting at home twiddling our thumbs waiting for the next press conference to detail when - if ever - we will come back out this current lockdown. The Delta cases seem to be rising daily, although not as high or quickly as some of the other states, thankfully. While our children are on their computers or IPads learning remotely. Parents are wondering when we will be able to go back to normal. All the while I can hear the birds again. They were quiet before, deadly quiet. Could it be the unseasonably warm weather we are having or is it because there’s not as much traffic on the roads? Less noise pollution? Less people bustling about not thinking about the affects their travels are having on the environment? Which brings me to the reason I am writing this to you today. To inspire and provoke thought and possible change - personal change. My name is Bianca McCosker. I am a mother of 3 and a real estate agent and I see the damage people cause in the name of progress on a daily basis. How entire bushlands are demolished to make way for pavement, roads and housing. As we stand today, Queensland is number one in the developed world for land clearing and is in the top 10 greatest destroyers of our natural land globally. Every year, about 395,000 hectares of native vegetation is being cleared mainly for raising livestock and development. That is the largest in the developed world. That can be hard to visualise, but it‘s an area roughly the size of Sydney or Melbourne. It‘s the equivalent of 1,500 football fields cleared per day. In Queensland alone, it’s estimated that 45 million animals were killed in the last 2 years due to the bulldozing of ancient forests, everything from skinks to koalas. With a conservative estimate of 1,000 trees per hectare (a hectare is about the size of a football oval) we can estimate 395,000 hectares equals about 400 million trees. Those statistics are shocking when put into that perspective. This is why we, at the Wilderness Society are calling for more transparency and accountability from our federal members of parliament. Currently there is a bill before the senate called the EPBC Standards and Assurance Bill or Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act whereby the federal government has the potential to weaken the environmental laws by passing the responsibility to the state legislatures. Amongst concerns over this is the fact that many environmental protections come about through international treaties of which the federal government is the signatory not the state. It is time the government adopts the recommendations of the 2020 Independent Samuals Report of the EPBC and we need to do this by stopping the standards Assurance Bill and getting the Standards Bill we deserve to actually fix these issues and protect this incredible state we live in as no one else will. It us up to us now and we need to show the government that it is vitally important and that we care. So, next time you’re driving past the latest empty lot or lot being cleared for a new housing estate, try to imagine the amount of trees that were once giving life and oxygen, then try and picture the amount of animals that, if they were lucky, needed to find a new home in a hurry. One way to serve an eviction notice. Email Letters to the Editor to admin@echo-news.com.au Bianca McCosker

A Different Kind of Easter Egg Hunt
It may not be Easter, and there may not be chocolate eggs hidden around your backyard, but thanks to 9-year-old Sienna Latta, there are beautifully painted rocks hidden in your neighbourhood!
Coincidentally, it was during the Easter holidays that Sienna, a grade 4 student at St Andrews School, began to get in on the rock painting action at the Eumundi markets. As an all-time arts & crafts enthusiast, Sienna was blown away by how fun it was and immediately suggested that her family buy more rocks to paint at home. According to her mum, Suzi, Sienna’s enjoyment stems from how she can use the curved and jagged shapes of rocks to create her amazing art, unlike the flat surface of paper. From Sienna’s little passion project came a bigger and better idea—to hide rocks around the neighbourhood and bring joy to the community. This was all inspired by the Kindness Rock Project—a viral trend in which people paint rocks and leave them for others to come and along and find. When a lady from the North Brisbane Community Painted Rocks Facebook group offered Sienna some stickers for her rocks (pictured below), she jumped at the chance to use them on her rocks. Now locals can simply pop the sticker on the back of any painted rocks they might happen to find, and everyone is encouraged to post their discoveries on Facebook! Over the years, the concept of “filling people’s buckets”, both Look out for rocks boosting Sienna's stickers at school and at home, have been

From giving back to the community, to always endeavouring to bring cheer to those around them, the Latta family is founded upon generosity. Their participation in rock painting at the Ferny Grove markets has allowed them to share their care, while Sienna can socialise with likeminded peers. She especially enjoys helping the little kids with choosing their rock and then mixing their paint colours to create their personalised masterpieces. You can find Sienna at her Ferny Grove market stall most Sundays, making her wonderful art for a gold coin donation. She also sells her pre-designed rocks for $2 or $3, as well as take-home DIY rock painting kits. Moreover, Sienna’s loves hosting her custom Rock Painting Parties and School Holiday workshops. The children at Camelia Avenue Childcare Centre in Everton Hills have been hard at work constructing their very own community hub! Located outside the centre, the hub contains a herb garden, community composting site, worm farm, street library, and even a toy exchange - all created by the staff and children at the centre! The team at Camelia Avenue Childcare are eager for the whole community to get involved with the hub. If local residents have produce to share from home, or seedlings and cuttings, they would love to hear from you! The local community is also welcome to take what they need, whether it be produce, toys, or books. Centre Manager Mary-Jane Burstow explained that the community hub is all part of the centre’s commitment to the environment and sustainability, along with making a conscious effort to teach children that working with the community has many benefits. ‘As a centre we were wanting to come up with ways we could be more sustainable. The wonderful Katie Irwin from @ wastenotcollective on Instagram set up her own hub in her street. She is a wealth of knowledge on sustainability and we loved

the thought of having something similar in our community,’ said Mary-Jane. ‘We also wanted something that would allow the children to be involved and something they could access on the weekends with their families.’ Maintaining the community hub is a ‘whole centre’ mission, with children from all rooms getting involved. Each day, the children take it in turns to take down their compost and food for worms. In the process, they have learnt about the whole cycle of composting, worm life cycles, and gardening tips and tricks. Mary Jane also told us that the hub has already been welcomed by the community with open arms. ‘We have had such lovely feedback from the community already and we do hope you can come and take what you need or contribute to our Community Hub sometime soon,’ said Mary Jane. and converted the kick, resulting in the final score -Met North 10 and Met East 13. Asora and Hemi have been chosen to attend C2K training, a program run by Rugby Australia with elite coaches building Wallabies in mind. Further to this achievement, Asora has been invited to trial for one of the three South East Queensland Teams to compete in the Emerging Reds Cup (ERC) 2021. The trial will consist of skill drills and trial matches. The ERC will see the best U15 talent from Qld compete in an elite competition. The dedication and talent of these young men has been noticed across Rugby Union and as a community we look forward to following the successes of Asora and Hemi.
Brilliant Bocce!
Asora and Hemi
Last month, Asora and Hemi in Year 9 represented Mitchelton State High School and the Met North Region in the State Rugby Championships.
In each game played, the team was faced with different challenges, however Asora and Hemi played with incredible form and the “Mitchie Spartan Spirit” was evident. Due to wet conditions, game two was a very inconsistent match, however Asora managed to score two tries and was later awarded “Man of the Match”. The Met North Representative team advanced into the Rugby State Championship finals. Hemi fronted the finals with an injury, but played magnificently. Unfortunately, in the last 20 seconds of the game, the opposition was awarded a penalty
Did you know that there is only one registered Bocce club left in Brisbane? It is called The Newmarket Bocce Club which is situated at 23 Foster Street, Newmarket (behind the ‘International City Church’). Bocce is a game of skill; it’s challenging, but it’s also fun and is played with Bowls and a Jack. If you are interested in learning more about Bocce why not pop down to the club? Everyone is welcome! The club is open on Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning and evening, and Friday evening. Coaching is available; including by arrangement on Sunday from 1pm. The club also has Sunday social competitions throughout the year. Contact Mario De Marco on 0403 257 325 for further details. As mentioned previously, the Newmarket Bocce Club is the only Bocce club left in Brisbane, so lets embrace this sport and not let it die out!

Roll Beyond Blue
Local Sport
‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’ is the theme that the team from Infinity Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Everton Park are taking into their fundraising event to support Beyond Blue in the battle to improve mental health in Australia.
People who experience mental health conditions can feel like there are constant pressures attacking them from every side, in what seems like a never-ending battle, where the world is against them. It has gotten so damaging in today’s society that within Australia: • 45% of people will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will experience anxiety • 1 in 6 women and 1 in 8 men will experience depression • Men are 3 times more likely to end their own life than women • There are more than 8 suicides per day in Australia • For every person who dies by suicide, another 30 people attempt to take their own lives, equaling 240 attempted suicides per day Figures taken from https://www.beyondblue.org.au/media/ statistics In a sport like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) where one can be attacked in many ways and in battles that can be extensive, correlations can be drawn to life with mental health conditions. As such, practitioners at Infinity BJJ are raising awareness of this silent disease and supporting Beyond Blue by raising money to assist those in need. On the day, two of Infinity’s members (the ‘Endurance Pair’) will both undertake 6 hours of BJJ rolls/sparring where they will take on any and all challengers to raise money for the
Tim Wilson with coach Josh Cooksley who will also be taking part in the 6 hour event. cause. During this time, there will also be an open mat where everyone is welcome to come and learn from experienced practitioners or challenge each other to rolling/sparring contests. There will be prizes and raffles drawn on the day with all proceeds from the event going directly to Beyond Blue. Be sure to drop in at Infinity Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at 1/7 O’Loan Street Petrie (near the Petrie round about) on Saturday October 9, 2021 to show your support. Corridors for our resident VIP’s and commuters An update from the Ferny Grove and Upper Kedron Residents Association Did you know that a large part of Ferny Grove, Upper Kedron and surrounding suburbs are classified as Koala Priority Areas (KPA) by the Queensland Government?
The 2020 koala habitat mapping report found that 91% of South East Queensland’s best quality koala habitat has been cleared over time, so let’s not take our special KPA designation for granted and do what we can to play a role in the survival of our ‘VIP’ residents. If you are lucky enough to spot a koala (or other wildlife) in your neighbourhood, take pause to reflect on how rare that moment is in this crazy world. If we want wildlife to stay, it’s up to all of us to keep our pets restrained to avoid attacks and drive carefully with wildlife crossings in mind. Having your say on development applications that may impact wildlife habitat or corridors is also important. And if you have sufficient land space, plant koala friendly trees - they don’t eat all types of gum leaves and have favourites like Tallowwood, Blue Gum and Grey Gum. While spotting a koala isn’t easy (they are mostly quiet and camouflage well) when you do see one, pay close attention to its behaviour and health – does it have a brown bum? Is it sitting on the ground? Are its eyelids red and inflamed? Is it injured? Even if it looks healthy, the best action is to call Moreton Bay Koala Rescue on 0401 080 333 – their team is available 24/7 and will be able to register the sighting (important for analysing koala populations) and do a health check at the same time.
One of our ‘VIP’ guests
Note: The current updates to the BCC City Plan don’t appear to reflect the Queensland Government koala mapping (available from https://qldglobe. information.qld.gov.au/ in our area, but this may be a time-lag.
The Gap Park n’ Ride On the topic of corridors, if you find parking at Ferny Grove train station problematic during construction of the TOD, then check out The Gap Park n’ Ride at Enoggera Reservoir – just a 15 min drive from Ferny Grove. River Warriors Restore Fish Passage at Bunya
Since 2001, Moreton Bay Regional Councils Bushcare Group, the River Warriors have been hard at work volunteering their time to riparian area in Sargent Reserve and Bunya Crossing Reserve.
Their latest efforts have focused on reinstating the natural stream bed at Bunya Crossing Bridge through the Bunya Crossing Fish Passage Remediation project. High velocity waters flowing under the bridge, had caused a surface water drop of -250mm preventing juvenille native fish migrating upstream. Through the construction of fish friendly scour protection, they have managed to restore the fish passage. What is fish friendly scour protection and how is it constructed? Using locally sourced natural materials, the stream bed was brought back to its natural grade. The strategic placement of large rocks and boulders provide varying flow conditions, including resting areas behind some of the larger rocks. The fish can now shelter and restore energy before continuing upstream. There are two rows of large rocks placed at the bottom end of the structure, buried deep into the riverbed, which anchor the other rocks in place and maintain the natural bed level. The formation of the stream may change naturally over time, however it is important that the structure is kept free of foreign objects such as additional ocks placed in the waterway that may restrict fish from moving up through to the upstream pool. Why is the fish passage important? Many of Queensland’s native fish are diadromous meaning they need to move between salt and fresh water to complete their lifecycle. Most native fish can only swim fast in short bursts, therefore structures like bridges and culverts that change the natural flow of a waterway can block their migration. Prior to construction of the Bunya Fish Passage, the bridge at Bunya Crossing had impeded the passage of the fish at times of low and medium flow. Species that can now use this fish passage include; Australian Bass, Sea Mullet and Jungle Perch. Fish Monitoring post construction Post Construction monitoring indicates that the fishway is successfully allowing fish of different species, size and life stages to move further upstream in the South Pine River. Paws For Effect More than mere companions, assistance dogs are often credited with offering hope in times of darkness. Sarah-Jane* once enjoyed a life that others could only dream of. As a professional fitness instructor, Sarah-Jane was paid to spend her days in the outdoors. Yet after being admitted to hospital for a routine operation, Sarah-Jane would find herself unable to move her legs. After months of rehabilitation, a black Labrador assistance dog by the name of Cozie entered Sarah-Jane’s life. Glued to Sarah-Jane’s side, Cozie is able to help with everyday tasks including collecting laundry from the washing machine, and opening doors. Cozie has proved himself an able companion who has allowed Sarah-Jane the confidence to return to the outdoors. ‘The less I have to ask my carer or neighbours for help, the more I feel independent, which means the more normal my life feels. Cozie’s been huge in that,’ she says. More than just a pet Under Australian law, an assistance dog is a generic term for a guide, hearing, or service dog that is specifically trained to perform at least one task to mitigate the effects of an individual’s disability. Dogs formally trained to be assistance dogs can take many forms including guide dogs for the visually impaired, hearing dogs, diabetes alert dogs, seizure alert dogs, mental health dogs and autism assistance dogs.
The ADA way Assistance Dogs Australia (ADA) is a not-for-profit organisation that specialises in offering accredited assistance dogs for people living with post-traumatic stress disorder, physical disability, autism, and educational support. They have placed more than 550 dogs in homes since launching 25 years ago. CEO Richard Lord says fully accredited assistance dogs reduce stress and isolation for individuals and families, while improving relationships and allowing people with disabilities to save money on care. “Additionally, clients with our dogs are more likely to venture out with their buddy, increasing their physical activity and often reducing reliance on medication.” Subtle differences Assistance dogs are covered under many legislative access laws for public access rights when working with their handler who lives with a disability, whilst therapeutic, emotional support or companion dogs are not required to undertake a Public Access Test (PAT). Furthermore, PTSD assistance, physical disability, autism and educational support dogs are each trained for up to two years to perform tasks to help their owner. ‘Capable of learning up to 50 different cues, typically assistance dogs retire around the age of 10-11, meaning most enjoy a working life of eight to nine years,’ Lord says. Owing to the intensity of the training at ADA, it can cost up to $40,000 to get an assistance dog through training. This includes everything from purchasing a puppy, to food, vaccinations, training, and placement of the dog to its new owner. A fun experience ‘Positive reinforcement techniques are used to motivate desired behaviours in its dogs. With puppy educators, assistance dogs learn basic obedience and experience appropriate socialisation activities in the community.’ Puppies are socialised so that they learn to be calm and confident in all situations, ’ Lord says. Lord reveals that currently ADA receives ‘hundreds of enquires, far many more than we can accommodate’. He urges anyone who is considering an assistance dog to go to an organisation accredited by Assistance Dogs International or their state government. *Surname withheld. A Mighty Milestone for Fab Fun Fitness! This October, Fabulous Physical Fun will celebrate a remarkable 15 years of providing fitness classes to locals in Ferny Grove and surrounds. When Bonnie first began training sessions in the hall at Upper Kedron, she never imagined her business would grow to form such an extensive community in the area. The studio is situated next to Coles, at the Ferny Grove Shopping Village, and has ample space and equipment for group classes. Each week Bonnie and her fabulous trainers deliver around 20 engaging classes, including Pilates, Barre, Stretch and Yoga along with B Fit B Strong for strength and conditioning. The popular Fit for Life classes are designed for clients who want or need to work out at a lower intensity. For dance inspired cardio workouts, clients enjoy Zumba/Zumba Gold and Cardio Dance classes. Bonnie says, “I think what sets us apart at our studio is the supportive culture; we’re like a family. Our qualified trainers want to understand your needs and will adapt exercises and give options to help you get the most from each class. After enjoying a challenging and fun session, many clients enjoy a coffee together at the Ferny’s Cafe upstairs, which is a lovely way to meet new people.” One of their most popular options is the Yearly Membership, along with the Kickstart Monthly Membership. The obvious attraction is the unlimited classes included in those packages. For those who need flexibility, there are 5, 10 or 20 class packs available. These are valid for a year and clients can easily book online through the website or Mind Body app. Would you like to try this studio? Buy an Intro Pack of unlimited classes for 2 weeks - $39. Welcome To Parenthood!
Since 1984, North West Private Hospital in Everton Park has supported thousands through their pregnancy, birthing and early parenting journey. Some of the team share insights… The role of partners in caring for newborns has changed significantly in the last few decades, says North West Private Maternity Services Manager Kim Pickering. “We really see the benefits of a family-centric approach, with partners involved throughout the whole journey from education to clinic visits with flexible after-hours options, and we include partner accommodation and meals as part of the maternity stay,” she said. “Communication between both parents is essential to maintaining a supportive environment at home and we encourage all parents to discuss feelings together as they journey into parenthood.” Midwife Kari (pictured) is part of North West Private’s popular Know My Midwife Program, where care is shared in a collaborative model with the mum-to-be’s chosen obstetrician. “Having partners and their families support women with their new infants provides a very nurturing environment − the education is consistent so family members are hearing the same information, so they can carry that forward when they go home,” Kari said. “The important thing for me when I'm caring for a woman is knowing her support network is essential for her wellbeing. It's really important for me to engage with the people that she considers her family − to have them

North West Private Hospital encourages partner involvement throughout the whole journey involved in her care, involved in the choices, and the delivery of that care.” “I really enjoy it when partners and family come in with the women to the Know My Midwife clinic - it allows me to get to know them and their needs, too." North West Private Hospital is also home to the Brisbane Early Parenting Centre, which offers families of infants aged up to 18 months support during a four-night residential stay. The Brisbane Early Parenting Centre’s Nurse Unit Manager Colleen Hickey says some of the common concerns for families are their babies’ feeding, sleep and adjustment to having a new baby in their world. “New parents are exposed to so much information particularly through social media, that can lead to selfdoubt and create unrealistic expectations.” Colleen says her team – which includes child and family health nurses, paediatricians, lactation consultants and more – supports families in a variety of ways. Each family is unique, and education and support will focus on their individual needs. This includes education around responsive settling techniques, helping parents read their babies cues and parent self-care. She says it’s important to remember that feelings of uncertainty are normal in the early weeks and months of welcoming a newborn into your life. Trying to find ways to maintain activities couples enjoyed before children can help them feel more connected and positive during a time of huge adjustment – even things as simple as going for a walk at the end of the day.

Why would you want a compounded medicine? The demand for professional compounding has increased
as healthcare professionals and patients realise that the “one size fits all approach” of commercially available medications do not meet the needs of many patients. These patients often have a better response to a customised dosage form made specifically for them. Compounding allows the doctor and patient to be totally in control of all aspects of treatment. This means the choice of medication, dosage, way that dose is administered (eg capsule, liquid, lozenge, transdermal etc) and what fillers and excipients are used, are all choices that can be made by the doctor and patient. Modern Compounding combines an ageless art with the latest medical knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, allowing specially trained professionals to prepare customised medications. Compounding is fundamental to the profession of pharmacy and was a standard means of providing prescription medications before drugs began to be produced in mass by pharmaceutical manufacturers. Compounding makes medicines one at a time to provide; • Unique dosage forms containing the best dose of medication for each individual. • Medications in dosage forms that are not commercially available, such as transdermal gels, troches, “chewies” and lollipops. • Medications free of problem-causing excipients such as dyes, sugar, lactose, or alcohol. • Combinations of various compatible medications into a single dosage form for easier administration and improved compliance. • Medications that are not commercially available. We have a saying in compounding that it matters where it is made, the selection of your compounding pharmacy is an important decision. We have a voluntary industry standard that is administered by the Professional Compounding Chemists of Australia PCCA that ensures ongoing training for compounding pharmacists and technicians, state-of-the-art equipment, and high quality chemicals are only purchased from TGA approved facilities. It also ensures the pharmacy maintains testing protocols, and complies with standard operating procedures. Keperra Compounding Pharmacy has been proudly been a standards approved compounder for over 8 years. Experience is the most important factor. Formulation has many considerations, and in the end the pharmacist is producing a medication specifically for you so getting to know a patients exact needs is a big part of the picture. At Keperra Compounding Pharmacy, our team of four pharmacists have decades of experience. Tahnee, Blaine, Natalie and Kylie can formulate suitable medications for your whole family (including pets) and are open 7 days a week. Exploring Archetypes Working with people on their path of healing has clearly shown me what most seek is to feel connected, worthy, loved and to find their purpose. Most of the searching is external, and I believe that the most important factor in this quest is to ‘know thyself’. Spiritual and personal growth happens gradually and ,at times, in big leaps with enormous break throughs. Understanding reactions and responses are key, so too is understanding your personal archetypes. “You can pretend to be something other than who you are, but eventually you will run out of energy to continue because that’s not authentically you.” -Caroline Myss. Caroline Myss is an expert in this field and her decades of research assist us to gain clarity in the light and dark aspects of archetypes in the hope that we will truly understand who we are, accept it and use our innate gifts for our highest potential. The disempowered side of our archetypes come to the fore when we feel threatened, frightened and deeply insecure. An example of an Archetypes some people would rather deny is the Gambler. The Gambler has many aspects. They’re the risk takers - the entrepreneurs - they follow feelings or hunches rather than facts and have great adventures. The shadow side can be seen as someone who is compulsive and all about winning. They take risks in relationships and will spend their last resources on a sure thing. The regal Queen has a lot of power,. She is generous to her court (family) and protects them well, however the shadow sees her as a controlling, manipulative woman who doesn’t like her position being threatened. The negative depiction of a mother-in-law comes to mind with this archetype, which can be interesting if her son/ daughter- in-law have the rebel archetype! While we’re exploring the Queen, let’s look at some more feminine archetypes; in balance is the empowered state and out of balance is the disempowered expression. Entrepreneur In balance - Seeks opportunities to create new enterprises. Innovative, intuitive, risktaking, driven, hard working. Compelled to give to others: heart centred. Out of balance - May use prosperity to manipulate. Personal gain may be main driver. Heroine In balance - Has been/is on a journey of personal spiritual awakening. Confronts fears without compromising the self. Out of balance - May disempower others to gain self empowerment. Connector In balance- Empowers others through connection, inspires many, knits a common thread for many that may not otherwise associate. Out of balance - Make connections purely for self gain; passes on false information to manipulate. Page 22 - September 2021, The Hills Echo
Nature In balance - Communicates with, nurtures, and takes care of animals, the environment and nature spirits. Out of balance - May abuse people, the environment or animals. Neglectful. Rebel In balance- Challenges authority to bring about change. Reject beliefs/customs/ways that no longer serve. Freedom. Out of balance - Retaliates against appropriate authority through anger. Peer pressure rebellion. Lastly, let’s look at the Vampire archetype, I’d like to explore this one a little as it may be overlooked as a fable. The Vampire takes; they have no regard for the other person, and it’s all about them. They can take energy psychically, have a constant need for approval and attention, co-dependent relationships are in this category. They may seem weak or pathetic, when in fact it is the object of their demands that becomes drained emotionally. Paying attention to patterns of behaviour with archetypes may assist you with your emotional health and relationships; they are all in the human consciousness although not necessarily part of your personality, have fun exploring your gifts, archetype connections and noticing them in others! Chrysoprase was mined at Marlborough and is now very expensive to buy.
Field trips are what most members look forward to at the Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club.
Especially when they end up finding suitable cutting material. The field trip the Club has planned for September will take us to Chinchilla, Miles, and we will be looking for petrified wood and a tour through the wildflower country north of Miles. Other Queensland gemstone material that members like to grind, shape and polish are Agate and Jasper from Agate Creek near Forsayth and from Cloyna/Windera area, Chrysoprase from Marlborough. Chrysoprase was mined at Marlborough once but has now ceased and good quality Chrysoprase is now very expensive. Another usual source of cutting material that members have is Gem Shows held by Lapidary Clubs around the Brisbane region. The next Lapidary Show in the local area is on at Caloundra on 25th September at the Caloundra Lapidary Clubs Clubrooms. Generally, at these Gemshows there are individuals who sell their surplus material and other gemstone items, like in a market style environment. There is also a Gem show on at Beenleigh Showgrounds on 2nd October this year organised by the Beenleigh Lapidary Club. Mitchelton & Districts Gem Club has reopened their workshop, after the last Covid 19 lockdown. We are open on Thursday mornings from 9am to 12noon and Saturday afternoon 1pm – 4pm with a limited number of four members who can attend each session. If you would like to come and look at our Lapidary workshop give John or Lloyd a call on 3351 1038 or 3351 2093.

TAX MATTERS
from local experts TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
For those who have rental properties it is important to understand the difference between capital works deductions and capital allowances deductions. Division 40: Capital Allowances - ‘Chattels’. Think furniture, computer equipment, lamp, desk etc. Division 43: Capital Works - ‘Fixtures’. Think windows, aircon, piping, buildings. Rental property investors can claim capital works deductions for construction costs for a rental property. However, there are limits imposed in relation to the dates such works were completed. The deductions are only available on residential properties if these were built after 17 July 1985. Generally, up to 15 September 1987 the rate is 4% a year over 25 years and after then is 2.5% but over 40 years. Residential property investor clients seeking capital works deductions should be aware that they can only make a claim for periods when the rental property was used for income producing purposes, not when used for private purposes. Expenses incurred in preparing the property for rental are not deductible as no income was being earned, these costs are instead added to the cost base of the property and are used when calculating to gain or loss on the sale of the property. Capital gains tax is another complex area and one we will discuss in next month’s editorial.

Just The Ticket – Female Trammies
History
News and views from a tramway muse - David Fryer
With the ongoing focus on women in 2021, it’s interesting to see how attitudes have changed over the years. Take this early commentary on female drivers for example:
‘To command such a monster demands a woman who has steady nerves. These noisy big fellows make so much bluster as they speed along that timid women would be thrown into a chronic state of prostration.’ This fascinating statement appeared in a best-selling book* in 1909 when cars and electric trams were still something of a novelty for most people. It continues: ‘The tension of the nerves sends the blood in quicker circulation, thus bringing the red colour to the cheeks and adding radiance to the eyes. It is regretted that this healthy glowing vivacity is hidden by the thick swathes of veils and big owl-eyed goggles which are worn by women drivers to protect their delicate complexion.’ Some readers may find this style of writing amusing today, while others may consider it sexist and inflammatory. However, Promotional Cartoon recruiting Queensland women during if you assume it was written by an insensitive male you’d be WW 2. Women were not allowed to drive trams in Brisbane. wrong. It was actually written by a pioneering feminist, author, forward to a more contemporary article and attitudes sound and successful racing driver. surprisingly upbeat: Dorothy Elizabeth Levitt, born 5th January, 1882, was the first ‘Women have proved that they can take their places in female racing driver in Great Britain. She was also holder of the practically every walk of life. Everywhere we find women world's first water speed record, the women's world land speed occupying important positions in the professional and record holder, and successful author. She was an early pioneer commercial world. In many of the motor car speed and for female independence and female motoring, even teaching reliability tests, women drivers and mechanics are prominent.’ Queen Alexandra and the Royal Princesses how to drive. Readers will be forgiven for assuming this statement is recent, Of course, attitudes and writing styles change over time. Fast but it actually appeared 87 years ago, in 1934**. Women certainly occupy important positions in the professional and commercial world today, but female drivers and mechanics are a rare sight at race tracks in the new roaring twenties, so what went wrong? The Brisbane Tramway Museum may provide an insight. Tram restoration is challenging work. Mechanical parts are invariably big and heavy, badly rusted, disgustingly greasy, or all of the above, so it’s hardly surprising that the workshops are not buzzing with female mechanics; in fact, there are none at all. So, what about female tram drivers? Again, there are none. However, there were a significant number of female conductors when trams plied the busy streets of Brisbane. Sadly, there are no female trammies at the museum today, but the new Ferny Grove ‘She Shed’ may encourage more women to climb aboard. Will we ever see Queensland’s first female tram driver? Time will tell, but that’s just the ticket I’d queue for... Nature Study Nostalgia
History
An update from the Samford Museum
Learning at home has become a new method of education during times of COVID lockdown.
Remote learning via computer shows how teachers have been able to adapt technology to continue teaching students. In the 1950’s radiograms were in use in schools to enable pupils access to some lessons. Singing and Nature Study were two such subjects. Booklets issued by the ABC Youth education Department for use in schools with their radio programming were purchased by the school at the beginning of each year. Lessons were prepared and broadcast by Crosbie Morrison, Director of National Parks, Victoria. In Nature Study lessons pupils listened to the broadcast and followed illustrations in the supplied booklet. At Bunya School, the newly appointed head teacher applied in 1953 for a radiogram. The department indicated the cost of 53 pounds. The school committee was to share half the cost. Six months later a 6 volt battery operated radiogram was supplied. In July 1964, the then head teacher received departmental approval for conversion to 240 volt power. No longer would the batteries have to be recharged at the local garage! Information in this article is sourced from Bunya School 18751965 by Melva A Welch, Nature Studies book in Museum’s collection. Planning a visit to Samford Museum? Please be aware COVID restrictions will apply on Sundays and Wednesdays 10am to 4pm, along with the 2nd Saturday of the month 9am-2pm until December. Coinciding with Samford Markets. For enquiries, call Geoff on 0417 610 983.

War Chronicles from Our Veterans
History
Lest We Forget! These simple words are spoken at ANZAC Day Commemorations every year. But how do we ensure that, as a nation, we don’t forget the sacrifices of these ordinary men and women whose actions and experiences were extraordinary? This Story Australia is a charity dedicated to capturing and preserving the significant moments of Australia’s history, as told by those who experienced it first-hand via high-quality video documentaries. In collaboration with This Story, Echo News is delighted to bring you our monthly segment that showcases just a few of the veterans whose full stories can be found at the Queensland State Library. Short bios are available on the This Story’s website at www.thisstory.com.au which has recently been upgraded. If you are a veteran and would like to share your memories, This Story would love to hear from you! Email jeff@thisstory.com.au or call 0439 661 448,
Richard Saunders Captain - The Australian Army
Richard Saunders was born in Mortdale, New South Wales in October 1921. Originally joining the Army, Richard transferred across to the Air Force in early 1940 much to his parent’s relief. However, after realising he had depth perception issues, Richard re-joined his original 45th Battalion. Richard was one of the Intelligence Officers in charge when the Japanese shelled Rose Bay and sent the three submarines into Sydney Harbour in June 1942. After the war Richard recounted that during his time in Papua New Guinea there was 13 times when someone was substituted to take his place in a mission and those 13 times resulted in the death of the officer who took his place.
David Mattiske
Able Seaman - Royal Navy
David Mattiske was born in Palmer, South Australia in May, 1925. At 17 David made the difficult decision to forfeit an opportunity of becoming a professional AFL player for the Melbourne Demons Football Club to join the Navy. He was drafted to the HMAS Shropshire. David wrote the book Fire Across the Pacific, which highlights the campaign of the Royal Australian Navy. To this day, David fondly remembers serving with Roy Cazaly during the war - the famous AFL player for whom the famous song "Up there Cazaly" was coined. "Boy he could jump!" exclaimed David.
Barbara Thelander
Telegraphist – Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) Barbara Thelander was born in April 1923. Barbara enrolled herself in a course on morse code and when proficient enough, became a trainee wireless telegraphist. Her first post was at RAAF headquarters in Melbourne before she was sent to Townsville for two years and then onto Richmond air base west of Sydney. Barbara's story speaks about her posting to Townsville (under the threat of more bombing) and her role in sending out messages about the weather to all stations. Barbara has written some books on her experiences, including A Stroll Down Memory Lane and This Nearly was Mine. As previously mentioned, This Story is a not-for-profit charity. Their high quality documentaries are offered online 100% free of charge to the public and allow all Australians to develop a deeper understanding of some of Australian history’s most significant events. If you would like to offer support, donations can be made online at https://thisstory.com.au/donate/. Any amount - large or small - will go towards the cost of producing these historical documentaries. Happy Birthday Brookside!
History
The opening of Myer in 1971
Original signage • Your local resident painting company • Servicing Brisbane’s northside for over 10yrs • All domestic & commercial works • Professional & friendly staff • Quality materials & tools used
A monthly update from the Enoggera and Districts Historical Society Inc In September 1971, the Brookside Shopping Centre officially opened its doors to customers – thus establishing itself as the premier retail facility for Brisbane’s north western community in the decades ahead. Just about all locals would have memories from shopping expeditions and visits there over the years. Longstanding clothes and merchandise bought, catch-ups with friends over coffee and brunch, or even taking the kids to visit Santa Claus in the lead up to Christmas. Some businesses there from September 1971 are still operating as of today, such as Woolworths and the wonderful Aldo’s Barber Shop. Other retailers have come and gone as they decades have advanced. Arguable the most famous closure was department store Myer, which was there at the start in 1971 but closed its doors in January 2017. On 11 September, Brookside will hold a special birthday event with fireworks and a movie night. The classic Gene Wilder movie ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ will be played – the movie having been first released in cinemas in the year 1971 as well. For further enquiries contact centre management. The Enoggera & Districts Historical Society would like to wish Brookside – a local community and retail icon – a very happy 50th birthday! Does anyone out there have photos and memories from visiting Brookside over the years? We'd love to hear from you. The Society is keen to build up our very limited stock in this area! What Is Youth Abuse Towards Parents?
This article is brought to you by Social Worker, Elena Bishop. Elena is the director of Supportive Therapy and Social Work in Arana Hills. She has a wealth of knowledge and insight into the industry. This month, Elena discusses abuse experienced by parents from the younger generation.
Yes, this is real, and it’s a typically unspoken hidden concern within our society.
If you know someone with children or blended families with children aged 12 years to 20 years, and have suspected something is not quite right, this article may be that gold nugget that puts the pieces together. For those who are not familiar, you may be thinking ‘but they’re kids, how much damage can they do? How do their parents let this happen?!’ Interestingly, the approximate statistics suggest only 7% of parents speak up. Alarmingly, during lockdown, it increased by 20% (hypothesised). And no, it’s not just ‘troubled kids’ from rough backgrounds. This can be any teenager at home on their devices late at night, mum asking them to get off and go to sleep, nope, nope, nope then she turns off the Wi-Fi and suddenly all hell break loose! Teenage logic- yes you guessed it - hasn’t fully developed. The frontal lobe (above the forehead) responsible for impulse control, decision making and understanding consequences doesn’t fully develop until 25. So, this mixed with dependence on the amygdala (fun word) which is associated with emotions,
aggression, and instinctive behaviour makes for an interesting time! Remember those times when you watch kids doing reckless, silly stunts and you think ‘what are you doing?’ this is why! By the way, have you heard of the phrase ‘raging hormones’ which is officially a trifecta of chaos. So, being abusive. Lets break it down. It can be obvious physical abuse and breaking stuff, verbal abuse, gaslighting or intimidation. Also, psychological, playing mind games, taunting, and instilling fear. Along with emotional abuse. For example, insults, patronizing, belittling, guilt and blaming you for their actions. Or even financial abuse that may include; dads credit card to live large and stealing for ‘cashies’. Yes, I could go on, but its brutal. How do parents feel? Honestly - Ashamed, guilty, embarrassed, failure, trying to protect their family so it doesn’t get out. This is a big secret to protect someone who is hurting you. Like walking on eggshells, and during lockdown; being trapped with a caged lion. The obsession to keep this ‘in house’ leads to isolation, self-blame, and depression. This can be a perpetual state of anxiety resulting in trauma. Help is always here. Tacos fall apart sometimes, but we still love them! If you get that joke, you are still with us and want to know answers. Let your mates know they are not alone; we don’t judge you; we just don’t understand. You are not to blame and don’t be scared anymore. Get your power back. Yes, you’re exhausted, but don’t give up! No, you’re not a failure. There is no excuse for any type of abuse, even if it is from a 12 year old (they can be really mean!). There is no simple answer, but if we don’t resolve it now, then when will we? FYI, abuse thrives in silence and isolation. Checkmate: Have a safety plan. Don’t keep it a secret - things won’t change. Seek counselling with someone you can trust. . Inform yourself about legal options so you and your kids are protected. Learn about new ways to handle communication & conflict, then teach them to your family to grow healthy relationships. Create opportunities to unite as a family. In crisis, call Parentline, Wire, or Lifeline. Find support groups to normalise your experience. Break the cycle of violence so it doesn’t repeat when they have kids. You got this. I believe in you.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic
Dear Robin, My wife and I separated six months ago, it was painful and conflictual. We have two children for which I have custody four days a fortnight. Some months ago I met another woman. I was careful about how I introduced the children to my new partner. Actually, I thought I was being pretty good about it, taking it slow and considering their feelings. They, like Penny my wife however, hates her. Penny stayed over a few weeks ago and on Sunday morning my eldest; a girl aged 12, came in very early in the morning, and found us in bed. She was surprised as we were, and a little upset. She seemed OK about it, but obviously she spoke to my wife. And my wife went off to me like a bomb. I was an irresponsible parent. I was teaching my children bad morals, she was not going to let the children come if Penny was there etc. My children are both now really upset and withdrawn from me. I don’t see what I have done that is that wrong. I am sure that my wife is bagging me endlessly to them. I think it is none of her business what I am doing in my personal life now, but I am concerned for the children and wonder what I can do about my relationship with them. Signed Robert. Dear Robert, It is often an extremely difficult time for ex’s and children when one partner enters a new relationship. Some handle it better than others, your ex-wife is one of those that does not. The strength of her reactivity can be due to the feeling that this really signals the end of the relationship with you, and she is left out in the cold. Self esteem often determined by ‘who has left whom’ can be at rock bottom, the courage to enter a new relationship is low and the fear that there will not be someone else for them is high. But, you are right; it is none of your wife’s business. Who you are with and what you are doing with them; unless [through neglect or abuse] it affects the welfare of the children. Children have to make huge adjustments in these situations and from what you say you have been doing your best to consider the emotional impact on them. Always, when there is a new relationship there are emotional energy shifts, while your children are still loved, the intensity that a new romantic relationship generates, is felt as a movement away from them. It is a natural occurrence.

Counselling Corner The children were not around during the same ‘new in love stage’ you experienced before they were born. They came into a pre-existing dynamic. With re-partnering and blended families, children (as well as adults) have to adjust to all these emotional shifts. Sometimes the shift can be experienced as a loss of love, and this for them can obviously be very upsetting, as they are already in a very vulnerable position after the break up of their family. It is not easy. Reaffirming your love and care, making sure you give attention to them and listening to their concerns is vital. If you have not already done so I would find an appropriate time to talk to them by yourself. It might be advisable to have them on your own for that weekend. Reaffirm your love whilst explaining your need for friendship, companionship etc. Point out that this does not detract from your relationship with them, which is always special and that will never change. The bedroom scene and your ex-wife’s reaction to that will have also brought home the realization that mummy and daddy will not be getting back together. Children invariably live in hope of this. They may like Penny, but the hope will still be there. They will need time to adjust. Don’t take their withdrawal personally. Accept that this will be the status quo for a while. At a good guess there is also a lot of divided loyalty being experienced by them. They could be very confused as to whom they feel they should be supporting. If it is so, her behavior and need to blame and project her hurt as an attack on you through the children is misguided, destructive and misplaced. The health of your relationship with them, for them, is more important than her need to vent her pain in that manner. Unfortunately though, kids are often in the firing line and both parents’ inappropriate behaviors can cause them a lot of emotional trauma. Do not return the attack through your children ever. Do not criticize her to them. Simply explain the facts as they are without blame i.e. each of you love the children and they do not have to choose between you, they can love you both as they always have. Whether your relationship with your ex-wife is good, bad or indifferent it is between the both of you and is not for them to sort out or take sides over. Also that your ex-wife is entitled as you are to have a new relationship and that you also want her to be happy as you do yourself. Stress that you understand that it is very hard for them to accept that you are no longer a family and will not be able to be that again. Explain to them that you understand and accept that they can feel sad and disappointed about the situation and that this is ok. Keep reaffirming your love, show your care, and accept where they are at, without judgment of either yourself or them. Continue to be patient and it will change. Robin.

Plentiful Produce on Offer at Hills Organic Garden
From The Hills Organic Garden Community It certainly has been quite a cold winter - but no complaints. We have had a nice amount of rain over the cooler months and of course the cooler temperatures make gardening that much more enjoyable.
Our members have been turning up each Sunday enthusiastic and ready to work. There has also been the rewarding task of picking quite a nice amount of produce at the end of the day to share amongst the members. Our snow peas are producing well at the moment along with our purple peas. We are busily pickling beetroot from the garden and enjoying some nice fresh cabbages. We have had a visiting predator to our garden recently pulling out our baby carrots, baby spinach, lettuce and spring onions and obviously enjoying their find. Cannot assign blame anywhere as no solid proof is available. However, we do have our suspicions. Our potatoes are looking extremely healthy and we are looking forward to digging up some nice “spuds” in the coming weeks. Spring is just around the corner and hopefully we have a few more months of pleasant weather for gardening before the From the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club heat of summer sets in. Bluey and Bingo Arrive in Stafford!
You can now catch a glimpse of the incredibly popular cartoon characters Bluey and Bingo along Stafford Road - for real life!
The traffic signal box outside the front of Stafford State School
Ludo Studio has painted the life-sized characters, along with some of the show’s iconic, and obviously Brisbane locations as part of Brisbane City Councils Artforce Brisbane program. The artwork is located on the traffic signal box out the front of Stafford State School - much to the delight of local students! Artforce is a community art project that enables local artists to paint their original works on traffic signal boxes around Brisbane suburbs. Traffic signal boxes are the metal boxes at traffic light intersections that house traffic light electronics. Over 1200 boxes have been painted through the Artforce program. Old boxes are often re-painted when they become weathered and new intersections are popping up all the time. Periodically, a set number of boxes are allocated for repainting to ensure the Artforce gallery is always fresh and up to date. THE FERNY REPORT by Mark Furner M.P.
State Member for Ferny Grove Fortifying Ferny Grove
Each year Parliament allocates a limited budget for members to run their offices, send out mail, print newsletters, and support their staff. Over the years I have been careful with that budget because I believe it is a public trust. When COVID-19 hit I believed it was time to use the money I had been saving for a rainy day to fortify some of our hardest-working community organisations in our community. To that end I have donated over twenty-five thousand dollars to twenty-eight separate not-for-profits in the Ferny Grove electorate who do so much to enrich our community. Each group was invited to come up with a project or idea they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to fund, therefore the modest donations I was able to give them could go to something meaningful and lasting. The variety of creative ideas our local volunteers and groups came up with was amazing. From school gardens and play spaces to domestic violence prevention and support for veterans our local volunteers made every dollar count. To every volunteer in the Ferny Grove Electorate, I want to say thank you for everything you do. Our community and our lives are richer for your efforts!
delivered over $1 Billion for Queensland Community Groups in Queensland since its inception. From 2022 we will see some major changes to this flagship grants program to support more organisations with bigger projects. The grant will move from 5 yearly rounds to four with one being a super round where grants worth up to $100,000 can be applied for. The first super round will be open for applications in January 2022. If you run or are involved in a local community group, please consider applying. For more information contact the Gambling Community Benefit Fund team on 1800 633 619 or contact my office at ferny.grove@parliament.qld.gov.au.

Tim Mander MP with Chloe and Megan from Everton Park State School planting a tree as part of National Tree Day
VIETNAM VETERANS DAY It was an honour to attend the Vietnam Veterans Day Commemorative Service, as we remember together, the sacrifices of the almost 60,000 Australians who served in the Vietnam War. We must never forget the price that our Vietnam Veterans paid and the impact of this service on our Veterans’ families. Thank you to all those who attended and to the Gaythorne RSL Sub-Branch for hosting this special occasion. NATIONAL TREE DAY I enjoyed taking part in and sponsoring National Tree Day, an important day for all Australians to put their hands in the earth and give back to the community. Over one million new trees, shrubs and grasses are planted each year, with more than 3000 students contributing to positive environmental change. I want to thank Chloe and Megan for helping me to plant edible and Indigenous trees at Everton Park State School.
infrastructure projects. Examples of the type of projects include developing or upgrading play surfaces, installing or upgrading irrigation or installing or upgrading sports lighting. The program opens in September 2021 and closes in November 2021. For more information visit: dtis.qld.gov.au/sport/fundingprograms/active-gameday-projects, or you can contact my office. Dickson News Peter DUTTON MP Federal Member for Dickson
A Message from Peter It has been a challenging few months in our community, we’ve had to adapt, innovate and overcome lockdowns and restrictions to continue holding local events and keep businesses open. This has made us resilient and we continue to work together to face this as a community. Our thoughts are with our friends, family and neighbours in New South Wales and Victoria in this difficult time. The roadmap to return to normal life is reliant on us all rolling up our sleeves to receive a COVID-19 vaccination. It has been encouraging to see so many Australians getting vaccinated with more than 52% of Australians over 16 protected with a first dose, and record numbers of doses administered over the past 7 days (1.76 million), at the time of writing. We must reach 70% and then 80% of Australians vaccinated before we can end the lockdowns and other harsh restrictions. If we keep working together we can get it done. Communities Environment Program Projects I’m pleased to partner with community organisations and the Moreton Bay Regional Council to deliver local environment

Cr Matt Constance and Peter Dutton MP planting trees with members of the Brisbane Bunya Lions Club at Everton Glen Reserve projects through the Morrison Government’s Communities Environment Program. Some of the projects funded in the local area include tree planting and native workshops such as a community planting event at the Old Bunya School and the beautification project undertaken by the Brisbane Bunya Lions at Everton Glen Reserve, Everton Hills. Ferny Grove Train Station Carpark Update As you may know, construction has now started at the Transit Orientated Development at Ferny Grove Train Station. This development has been many years in the making and will combine residential, commercial and lifestyle facilities in a new precinct at the station. Importantly, the project will also deliver 1400 carparks, a significant 42% increase in commuter carparking upon completion. This is in addition to retail and residential car parks. I am proud to have secured an $11 million investment from the Morrison Government to help deliver these extra car parks for commuters in our community. The $140 million project will be delivered by Honeycombes Property Group and more than 800 full time jobs will be supported by the development including approximately 285 direct jobs tied to construction. Please be aware that during the construction phase there may be limited car parks at the station. Rail services will not be affected. What’s important to you? I want to know what’s important to you. We can work together to get the road, facilities and transport upgrades our community needs to get even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977, stop by one of my mobile office caravan visits, or drop in to my office in Strathpine to let me know what your priorities are for our community. Budget 2021-2022
The Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner delivered the 2021-22 Budget and he said, ‘our $3.6 billion Budget is a record three-year $3.6 billion investment program in infrastructure which will see roads, libraries, bridges, bikeways, footpaths and playgrounds built across our beautiful city.’ Challenges over the past year, and no forecast as to how long the pandemic would go on, precipitated the Schrinner Council waiving more than $1.8million in fees for renovators to support the building industry. A further $6.5million in fees were waived for almost 7,000 businesses directly benefiting cafes, restaurants and bakeries. The Budget awarded grants through a Direct Assistance Program to hundreds of not-for-profit community, sporting and cultural organisations. This direct support has enabled the groups to operate during the pandemic. The Budget also reaffirmed our commitment to cafes and restaurants by reducing footpath dining fees for another 12 months. Across Brisbane more than 113,000 households added a green bin to their homes, reducing green waste that ends up in redtop bins. Larger re-cycling bins are available to households for free and tip vouchers have been extended to all households across Brisbane. An exciting pilot program FOGO (food organics & garden organics), a major waste strategy in conjunction with the SE Qld Council of Mayors will be undertaken to add food waste to the green-top bins. This pilot program will assess how this new form of waste management works in our climate. The Kerbside Collection has been fast-tracked this financial year, so check the Council website to find your suburb service date. You can view the full budget on the Council website at www. brisbane.qld.gov.au

Excitingly, the Association’s 40th Anniversary Celebrations are coming up on the 24th October, and they would love to see any previous members attend. It is to be held at Parliament Donna and Fay making House, commencing at noon bunnies with cold porcelain with a light lunch, followed by a memorabilia display, anniversary cakes display, a fun competition to judge, and time to reminisce. Please contact Sandra Clark on 0413 317 212 if interested in attending. The Brisbane North Cake decorators are a branch of the Qld Cake Decorators Association and meet on the third Saturday of each month (except December) at the Arana Hills Community centre, 291 Dawson Parade Arana Hills, commencing at 1pm. Student Testimonial Tells It All!
An update from Picabeen Community centre regarding their Student Program Since 2013, Picabeen has been supporting QUT Social Work students to complete their placement hours at our centre. Below is a reflection from one of our semester 2 students.
This is my first placement for my Bachelor of Social Work at QUT. I’m blessed. This placement allows me to contribute to my community. Picabeen is a great community centre the best I’ve known in Brisbane city. The inclusiveness and richness of support given by the staff and volunteers in the organisation makes me feel supported. The project that I am working on is about change in the disability area, the project is called Opportunities for Change. This project aims to promote inclusion at Picabeen. Our goal is to support people with a disability to volunteer and/or participate in activities and services at Picabeen and The Change Room (Op-shop). We are also working on improving our services to give the best support and assistance to our participants and volunteers. My project, I feel, also promotes inclusion and reduces social isolation in the community. Where COVID-19 has an impact on every person’s life, it had contributed a lot of negative impacts to the community. By acknowledging the impact of the pandemic, we would like to help, support, and assist our local communities in improving their life and well-being. These ideas have prompted us to tell the community that they are not alone, and Picabeen is here to help and assist. - Semester 2 Student You can keep up to date with developments at the centre by visiting them on Facebook. Just search Picabeen Community Centre. Alternatively, you can visit them at 22 Hoben Street, Mitchelton from Monday to Thursday, 9am-4pm and Friday from 9am-12pm. Did you know that Picabeen has an Op-Shop called the Picabeen Change Room - a little Op-Shop with a Big Heart! It is located on 65 Gilston Street, Keperra and is getting ready to step into Spring! It’s time to put away those winter woolies and freshen up your wardrobe with our bright spring fashions. There’s always new stock coming through from the generous donations of this community, so please drop by and pay us a visit. The shop is open on weekdays from 9am to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. You can also follow the Change Room on Facebook by searching Picabeen Change Room.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHANGE
A light luncheon will be served followed by a m e m o r a b i l i a d i s p l a y, anniversary cakes display, fun competition to judge and time to reminisce.

How to Become a Tech Savvy Senior
Senior’s Month is being held during October and this is when all seniors are given the chance to show their achievements to the general community. Furthermore, Get Online week is also taking place from the 18th to the 24th October. Get Online week is an international digital inclusion campaign organised by Good Things Foundation. Last year, over 700 community organisations around Australia held a Get Online Week event, helping people with limited digital skills get more out of life online. To celebrate this, The Hills & District Chamber of Commerce Senior Committee, together with the Older Woman’s Network Queensland Mitchelton (OWNQ) is organising a lunch, for the senior members of our community. The lunch will take place on Thursday 21st October 2021 at the Arana Leagues Club from noon to 2pm. Transport can be taken by the Arana Leagues Courtesy Bus if required. There will be a Smorgbasboard and the cost is $20. The guest speaker at the event will be Brian Battersby OAM, a retired Moreton Bay Regional Councillor who will chat about ‘Seniors Learning Technology’. If you are over 65 and feeling like meeting other fellow seniors, come and enjoy lunch with us. You do not have to be a techno wiz as technology is at all levels of our ability. Bookings can be made at www.hillschamber.org.au, go to ‘Attend an Event’ and follow the prompts. If your technology is unable to use this system, just contact Judith Heindorff 0431 159 921 and you will be booked into the event. This is just one of many initiatives to come that are a result of The Seniors Committee of The Hills and Districts Chamber of Commerce Inc and the OWNQ Mitchelton branch combining their efforts. This joint venture between the two organisations will address the needs of older people, including dealing with isolation, giving seniors a voice, strengthening confidence and ability to engage within the community. More live events are in the pipeline and there will also be workshops offering an introduction to the Be Connected website and tools, and offering tips on how to safely connect with others using technology. The joint venture will also seek to engage with other like minded organisations to achieve their goals. A team of technology support people will be developed to assist seniors with basic technology devices, including phones, laptops, computers and tablets/pads etc. More information can be found on the website www. hillschamber.org.au/committees/seniors-committee/
