A Garden of Goodness!
Are you a bit of a green thumb or want to learn more about the art of gardening? Did you know there is a is a growing, living enterprise called The Hills Organic Garden (HOG) right on our doorstep at Bunya? The Hills Organic Garden was established around six years ago by a group of locals. Their goal was to provide an opportunity for all interested people in The Hills District to be able to come together to grow fresh food, learn, relax, and make new friends and boy did they reach that goal! Now the community consists of over 20 members and the garden is thriving thanks to their tender loving care. The garden boosts a vast array of fruit and vegetables, all grown without a single drop of chemical, making this garden truly organic. The garden is situated beside the dog unleash park on 416 Bunya Road, Bunya (next to the dump). Water is supplied from the Moreton Bay Regional Council and the HOG community hold fundraising activities to raise funds in order to operate their garden. They have also received donations from Bunnings for garden materials and construction of their wicking beds. This friendly group welcomes experienced gardeners or locals who simply like to see things grow from the ground up to join them. One of the great perks about joining HOG community is the reward of taking home fresh produce such as; lettuce carrots, cabbage, spinach, beetroot, bok-choy, peas, beans pumpkin, chillies, passionfruit, as a result of your labour. Members from HOG can pop down to the garden whenever they have a some free time to do a bit of work. However,
Just a few of the amazing garden beds at the Hills Organic Garden every Sunday from 8am-11am, the organisation holds ‘work days’ where they tidy up the gardens, tend to new plantings etc. Everyone is welcome, and if you’d like to bring the family down to have a look at the beautiful gardens on one of these working days, please do. The kids will love seeing all the fruits and vegetables growing and it is a great educational experience for them too! The community welcome new The produce at HOG is fresher than ever! ideas for their future development as they continue to flourish. They currently meet every second month. GRAB THAT GRANT! Staying In Sync with Welcome our new monthly column, Grab that Grant, which will provide invaluable information about accessing and applying for funding. This information is brought to you by local grants guru, Carolyn McCall, from Little Project Management Company, who has a wealth of knowledge Carolyn McCall and an insight into the industry.
‘Activate your purpose’
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, many for purpose organisations are struggling under the weight of change and uncertainty.
Successfully accessing funding has now become a difficult task for most. But as always, there are people out there willing to lend organisations a helping hand in these challenging times. Meet Carolyn McCall, a program designer and grant funding expert who lives and breathes her passion for initiating social change. Carolyn’s has put together her top three tips for accessing grant funding: 1. Focus on your core vision – In the words of Carolyn, “I always work on developing a grant strategy before applying for any grants. Every idea or program should link back to the organisation’s vision, goals, and dreams. The Next Big Thing is very tempting, though sometimes it does not have the greatest impact.” It may be hard for enthusiastic business owners to take time cementing the foundation of their organisation before diving into The Next Big Thing. However, it is during this period that innovative ideas can come to fruition. 2. Create a community – Carolyn always encourages organisations to work together on programs to have better results for the community. COVID-19 has reinforced how important ‘community’ really is, and how a cohesive community can create a sense of belonging and trust for all, whilst offering members equal opportunities to participate. When two organisations work together and focus on their strengths, it more than doubles their chances of building a community. Grants funders love seeing how your project works with others to create social change. 3. Look at funding alignment – Finding a funding partner that shares your vision can help your organisation in the long term – by having support during delivery of your project or by increasing chances of securing funding over multiple years.

Club Community Reunites
Arana Netball's return to netball in July has been a wonderful success, they are now over half way through and enjoying some great wins. The greatest part about being back on court for the club is being back with their greater netball community. Although the games look a little different this year, there are still plenty of opportunities to be involved in the netball community. Umpires are an integral part of every club and at Arana Netball they are lucky to have a great group of umpires representing them each week. Some are players and coaches and some, like Jason, do it to be involved in their child’s sport. All of Arana Netball's umpires are dedicated and willing to jump in and help each other out whenever it’s needed. 2020 is Jason’s first year umpiring netball and he Jason taking to the court with umpiring duties. is doing a stellar job! His attention to detail and considerate manner is welcomed court side each week. Not to mention, he’s quick, the girls have no chance of out running Jason. Welcome aboard Jason!

Celebrations All Round at the Brisbane Tramway! Monthly news from the Brisbane Tramway Museum and the Ferny Grove Men’s Shed
Councillor Steven Toomey helping out the team at Ritual HQ in the inaugural ‘Tram-Pulling’ competition August saw the museum commemorate the 135th anniversary of the first horse drawn trams commencing in Brisbane as mentioned in last month’s Echo. The event was held on the 8th August and was complete with tram displays, joy rides, and special events. Although passenger numbers were understandably down compared to previous events, alot of fun was had by all! One of the highlights of the afternoon was a ‘tram- pulling’ demonstration (using the horse drawn tram) organised by local gym Ritual HQ on behalf of the museum. The team put in a magnificent effort, pulling one of the trams over a 50 metre track. They even managed to cut their time on each pull from 22 seconds, on the first pull, down to 17 seconds on the third. Councillor Steve Toomey is shown helping out on the third pull!
www.echo-news.com.au
Another major event was the official opening of Ashgrove The Gap Rotary Club’s new storage shed, which is erected on the museum site. Member for Ryan Julian Simmonds MP and Councillor for The Gap Ward Steve Toomey were present along with President Mitch Koroloff. Rotarians later provided the sausage sizzle for the museum’s activities. The museum would like to extend a sincere thanks to Rotary for their support. September marks another significant anniversary for the museum - the Commemoration of the Paddington Depot fire which occurred back in 1962. Brisbane lost 65 trams in that disaster. The commemoration will take place on Monday 28th September and will be a late afternoon/evening event. For details closer to the date, please visit www. brisbanetramwaymuseum.org or the Facebook page www. facebook.com/brisbanetramwaymuseum The 28th September also marks the start of Australian Men’s Shed Week. Ferny Grove Men’s Shed will play host to visitors from other sheds especially on the commemoration night. The museum would like to thank Men of The Trees for their latest garden improvement. They have now reorganized three gardens at the museum which are all looking really appealing. Brisbane Tramway Museum is proudly supported by Brisbane City Council. Ferny Hills Aquatic Centre is set for some TLC this financial year. Refurbishments to the toilets and change rooms will take place along with installation of a new hot water system. An exact date is yet to be announced by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Preparation for the next Play Prevails
From our local community theatre, The Hills Players
The year 2020 has certainly proven to be interesting one to say the least for The Hills Players. While we haven’t had the chance to perform a play for everyone, we have enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane with you. Our 40 year anniversary has made everyone a little nostalgic and has given us the opportunity to reflect on the plays we have performed. There will more reminiscing from the Hills Players in the next edition of the Hills Echo. Preparation for the next play ‘Always a Bridesmaid’ is happening every week. Rehearsing on our stage and staying social distanced by 1.5 metres, isn’t possible, so the cast is running through the lines instead (COVID-19 compliant of course). Everyone is getting a great feel for their characters and there is always a whole lot of laughter - no matter how many times the lines are read. This is a sign of the fun to come when we finally get the chance to perform it for an audience. Let’s hope it’s not too far in the future.

TAX MATTERS from TaxArana, 2 Glenlee St, Arana Hills
The Federal Government has announced changes along with an extension of the JobKeeper payment. From September 28, 2020, businesses and not-for-profits who are seeking to claim JobKeeper payments will now be required to have their eligibility re-assessed for the JobKeeper extension. Actual turnover in the September quarter will be used to determine eligibility. Businesses and not-for-profits will need to demonstrate that they have met the decline in turnover test in this quarter to be eligible for JobKeeper from 28 September 2020 to 3 January 2021. To determine employee eligibility, the reference date for eligibility is now July 2020 with effect 3 August 2020, this may mean employees not previously eligible may now become eligible. The payment rate from September 28, 2020 will be reduced and paid at two rates. From September 28 to January 2021 the payment rate will be $1,200 per fortnight for all eligible employees, who in the four weekly pay periods before the reference period, were working in the business for 20 hours or more a week on average and $750 per fortnight for employees who were working in the business for less than 20 hours a week on average. From January 4, 2021 to 28 March 2021 the payment amounts will be $1,000 and $650 and again payment made will be determined by the hours worked. The changes may seem confusing at first glance but can be easily worked through. If you are unsure of what to do, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team at TaxArana. A final Hoo-rah for 2020!
News from The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club The Mitchelton and Districts Gem Club have just returned from a field trip to Chinchilla where they fossicked for petrified wood etc. As it was a long weekend they had the opportunity to travel to Miles and visit the Miles Historical Museum. Miles is about a thirty minutes drive west from Chinchilla. The historical museum has one John Nedwich from The of the best Lapidary displays Mitchelton Gem Club in South East Queensland as Digging for Petrified wood at well as many other interesting Chinchilla memorabilia. With petrified wood, most members like to cut the pieces in half and polish the faces for display purposes. A few members make cabochons from the petrified wood and some members just collect smaller pieces and polish them up in a Tumbler. To polish stones in a tumbler you start off with silicon carbide grit and water in a barrel. The barrels sometimes can go all day and night for weeks, depending on how rough the original stones were when put into the barrel. You just use finer and finer grit and in the end a polish is used – generally tin oxideto buff up the stones. The twenty-three members who made the trip all came home
with enough material to keep them cutting and polishing for the rest of the year. We have no more trips planned for this year as the border closure makes it difficult to travel into New South Wales. The club is operating on a limited membership number who are allowed to visit the workshop at the various sessions. Workshop times are on a Thursday from 9a.m. to noon for cutting and polishing of material and from noon to 3p.m. for Silversmithing. The clubs areas have sanitising stations set up which members must adhere to and they have found social distancing has not been a problem with the use of their machines in the workshop as they are well spaced apart. If you would like to have a chat to someone regarding the hobby, do not hesitate to contact John on 3351 1038 or Lloyd on 3351 2093.

The Ritual HQ Difference
Ritual HQ have been in the Hills District for just over two and a half years and have established themselves as something different in the fitness industry, not only inside of the gym, but also in the local community. On site, their personalized approach to membership is helping give confidence, support and direction to those who may have once felt lost inside a gym. Every member is provided with a personalized training program and access to small group training classes that are limited in size to allow for high quality coaching - not just instruction. Ritual HQ is home to an experienced team of six coaches that know their members names, provide high quality one-on-one and group training, as well as specialized nutrition advice. For these reasons, this is an extensive and complete fitness service.
www.echo-news.com.au
In the community, Ritual’s own “RHQ Army” can be found at local events lending a spare set of hands where they are needed most. From the Easter Egg Hunt at Teralba Park to school breakfasts, fetes and colour runs, this team of volunteers - made up of coaches and members alike - have been helping community events run with a little more manpower. This is based on the Ritual HQ owners’ strong belief in giving back to the community. Helping members establish habitual training and nutrition habits, providing a highly personalized service, and giving back to the community are just a few characteristics that define Ritual HQ as a different experience in your search for health and wellbeing. For more information about joining the Ritual HQ community, please visit www. ritualhq.com.au

Why we need to see exercise as medicine for the brain
By Duncan Grant, Exercise Physiologist, Pine Rivers Private Hospital
Typically, when people list why they exercise they reference weight loss, fitness or strength. Rarely does depression or anxiety treatment make the list. This is no surprise given that for many years talking therapies have been the go to for treatment of these conditions. Exercise enthusiasts regularly preach the mood benefits of exercise and we are now blessed with a wealth of research on this topic to back up the feeling. A dive into the research suggests two things; exercise to be an antidepressant with both short-term and long-term benefits; and a sedentary lifestyle to be a depressant. Many studies report high fitness levels to be a protective factor against development of future depression and anxiety and this makes sense when we consider our ancestral hunter and gatherer roots. A look in to the daily lives of a hunter and gatherer makes it quite evident that we were made to move. Hunter and gatherer tribes on average walk/run 6.5km - 15km/day, quite a stretch for the average westerner working in an office bound environment, ever so reliant on technological and mechanical conveniences. A recent study by the Lancet found the physical activity levels of Australian teens to be some of the worst ranked in the world coming in at 140 out of 146 countries according to WHO physical activity guidelines. Whereas a health report that came out in 2015 found 30% of adults are considered sedentary. So why is exercise effective in improving depressive and anxiety symptoms? The answer can be summarised into two categories; physiological and psychological. When you
www.echo-news.com.au
start to exercise your body goes into flight or fight mode, a situation which causes an influx of neurotransmitters into the circulatory system which best enhances our ability for survival. Many of these neurotransmitters, better known as endorphins, stimulate and enhance the brain in profound ways. If you are a novice to exercise, or active hobbies in general, it is normal to be nervous and unsure about where to start. Arguably, this is where the most powerful mental benefits can be achieved. Willingly choosing to expose yourself to something physically challenging and achieving personal goals builds self-efficacy and with it, a boost in confidence to overcome difficult challenges. This is where we see the most addictive and powerful mood benefits. We need to think of exercise as medicine for the brain. So, if we should be thinking of exercise as medication, how much, how long and how often should we be doing it? Current guidelines for exercise are geared towards improving our physical health and as such, we lack clear guidelines on what is necessary for achieving good mental health. Studies have shown as little as 10-15 min bouts of exercise can reduce stress, depressive symptoms and improve self-esteem in adults. The research clearly shows a dose-response relationship, suggesting the more you exercise, the greater the benefit will be. The best prescription I have synthesised from the research is as follows; something is better than nothing however, more is generally better. To be able to support our patients in achieving these goals, this year Pine Rivers Private Hospital has opened of a new exercise room available to inpatients during their stay. The exercise room, which includes a treadmill, bike and cross trainer, was installed due to overwhelming patient feedback. Our aim is to better assist patients in achieving a comprehensive plan for their mental health goals, including exercise. We also encourage our Inpatients to take part in our Walking Towards Wellness group which takes patients on a 30min walk around the area, using this time to take in surroundings in a mindful way – being aware of what is happening and how they are feeling during this time. Exercise duration and frequency aside, it is important to find something that you enjoy. Whether this is walking, running, swimming or boxing – take the time to find something that makes you want to go back! To find out more about the programs that Pine Rivers Private Hospital has to offer or to discuss our inpatient programs please contact 3881 7222 to speak to our Intake Team. Fabulous Physical Fun studio PIVOTS, with Virtual Fitness Classes
Some of the ladies from the Fabulous, Physical, Fun family
In late March, along with many other businesses, studio owner, Bonnie Cunial, was required by law to close until further notice. ‘Pivot’ is a popular buzz word. A business needs to make a significant change to survive during a forced closure, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Bonnie says that her clients’ health and wellbeing were her priority, and she wanted them to maintain their fitness during the closure. She quickly sprang into action, with the help of staff and trainers, to offer a private Facebook group, and filmed classes from her normal timetable. It was a steep learning curve but she even offered new classes, such as Tai Chi, Chi Ball and Cardio Dance. Now that the doors are open again, face-to-face classes are available. Bonnie says her clients already use the MindBody software to book classes, so it made sense to upload the videos to their newly developed platform, as an extra service for clients and potential clients. Often it’s convenient to do classes at home when the time suits, or on holidays. Many clients are unable to attend due to child care, lack of transport, or waiting for tradespersons. In September, there’s a special introductory price of only $14.50 a fortnight. This provides full access to the Virtual on Demand Library, with over 40 classes, and is ideal for beginners to intermediate. For more information call Bonnie on 0413 600 502, or to view the face-to-face timetable, visit www.fabphysicalfun. com.au . Additionally, there is currently an exclusive SPECIAL OFFER taking place where clients can ‘Try any 3 classes for $39’. So what are you waiting for?!

A Local Fitness Studio for Everyone!
It can be daunting taking the first steps back into fitness, however local fitness studio, Exquisite Fitness is a place where everyone is welcomed. At Exquisite, all levels of fitness are catered for, plus there are a huge variety of classes on offer from Bootcamps to Strength, Yoga, Pilates, Barre, plus so much more! Gym owner Nerida Smith has been a personal trainer in the area for over seven years and has always been driven by a passion for bringing health, fitness, energy and vitality back into people’s lives. ‘I am a huge believer in mixing up how people train and combining both resistance/weight training with short, sharp bursts of cardio activity for both re-sculpting and defining the body. This type of training not only keeps you interested, it also keeps the body guessing. This way it doesn’t fall into a comfortable state where it becomes less effective at burning calories and keeping the metabolism fired,’explains Nerida. In addition, the studio also boasts caring and friendly personal trainers who take a direct interest in you, your body, your goals, your circumstances and any obstacles that may get in the way of you reaching your goals. At Exquisite Fitness, you will be welcomed by a super supportive community of men and women who will support and cheer you on in order to achieve your own fitness goals. To top it all off there is a huge, friendly, colourful and air-conditioned creche that is fully decked out with books, colouring activities and a smart TV. To start your fitness journey contact Nerida today on 0403 000 585
Feel the Booty Burn with Barre
With a name like ‘Booty Burn’, you know your heading into a class with a bit of sass and clearly a lot of burn in the backside to boot. However, all puns aside, this new workout program, now offered at local fitness studio Exquisite Fitness, is rapidly gaining recognition and followers in the local area, and it is not hard to see why. The foundations of ‘Booty Burn’ are derived from ‘Barre’ - a class that originates from the ballet discipline, however no dancing experience is required! The class is a combination of dance, pilates and yoga all merged into one. The Barre method uses your own body weight for resistance and focuses on small, deliberate movements that focus on specific groups of muscles - specifically muscles that aren’t used in other workouts. Therefore, you're in for a fitness session that will work muscles you've never thought you had! Classes are all very low-impact, making it perfect for all body types, for people recovering from injuries, and even for pregnant ladies. Whats more, if done regularly, Barre fitness classes can work to deliver athlete-like strength, but with the long, lean, sculpted body of a dancer. Exquisite Fitness recently completed construction of ‘The Bliss Barre’ - a custom-built barre studio complete with air-conditioning where their popular ‘Booty Burn’ classes are held. For class times or more information, visit exquisitefitness. com.au or call Nerida on 0403 000 585

Top 5 Group Exercises for Seniors
The Ekka westerly’s have died down and the warmer weather is just around the corner, so why not consider a new, gentle group activity to get out and about? Many of these activities are available in our local area, at community halls and private businesses, and you will be sure to find like-minded folks out looking for social connections as well as to get their bodies moving. Tai Chi - is a gentle Eastern exercise that can provide benefits including flexibility and muscle strengthening. There are no special equipment needs to commence Tai Chi so look for a local group or even a DVD from the local library. Yoga – there are many forms of Yoga to suit all fitness levels, including chair-based yoga if you are not too steady on your feet. The benefits from a regular yoga practice do not only improve your body, they can also improve your mind with reduced stress and anxiety being a common side effect. Classes are prolific in most neighbourhoods and there are even free classes held outdoors by Moreton Bay Regional Council from time to time. Walking Group – there are many groups based in our
Page 28- September 2020, The Hills Echo
community that have regular, organized walks; new walkers of all fitness levels are always welcome. Ask around your friends and family for a recommendation, start your own group, or try the Heart Foundation website at www.walking. heartfoundation.org.au Pilates – traditional Pilates is a low-impact activity originally created to rehabilitate wounded WW1 soldiers. It looks to improve core strength, balance and posture by using resistance from your own body weight, a stretchy band and ring, or a more advanced level Pilates reformer machine. Aquatic exercise – the warm water of an exercise pool provides a low-impact and low-weight-bearing way to exercise, reducing the risk of injury, stress on the joints, and most importantly, reducing the risk of falls. Regular aquatic exercise can lead to improved muscle mass, increased strength and general fitness, as well as being an effective way to recover from injury. Many local swimming pools have organized classes for differing ages and fitness levels. Also, before embarking on any type of new physical activity, please consider if it is appropriate for you and have a chat to your GP. Getting out and about is a big part of life, and our team can support you in being part of the activities and events that matter to you. At Just Better Care Brisbane North and CBD, we offer a range of services, from companionship to transport, to helping you attend work, volunteer commitments, social outings, family gatherings, recreational activities, community events, and more. We can provide support for just a few hours, or on a regular basis. It’s up to you.

What is compounding and how can it help you? Go back 50 years and every chemist was a "compounding chemist", mixing creams and tinctures up "just for you". Although the fundamentals of compounding remain the same, the art and science has been modernised. Digital scales, mixing machines, powder mixers, and ointment mills mean we produce high quality, accurate medicines in our lab in Dallas Parade, Keperra. "Compounding medicines involves making a specific medicine to the special requirements of an individual person,” according to Keperra Compounding Pharmacy owner Tahnee Simpson. "That may mean turning a tablet into a liquid for children, making a cream with multiple ingredients to reduce the need for separate products or producing capsules of a medication because the offthe-shelf version is unavailable. We can also make products that may be available overseas, but the product is not yet available here in Australia." Owners Tahnee Simpson and Blaine Woods both have special interests which have seen them undertake extensive training in women’s health, men's health, thyroid problems, auto-immune conditions, pain conditions, dermatology, cosmeceuticals and veterinary medicine. "Cosmetic medicine is a special focus for us at the moment,”Tahnee says. “We’re working closely with Dr Jeni Wellington at Keperra Medical Centre, who specialises in treating skin problems such as ageing skin, pigmentation, rosacea and acne with personalised products designed specifically for the individual." Make a booking with Dr. Jeni Wellington at Keperra Medical Centre 0733554082 - offering a free one-on-one skin consultation through September and October, or call and speak to Tahnee at Keperra Compounding Pharmacy 0733553905 to find out how compounded medicines could help you.

Get Growing: Spring Gardening Tips
from The Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
ACCOUNTANTS - TAX AGENTS on 32 Main ST, Samford (next to Farmers Hall)
The garden needs lots of attention in the month of September. Seeds for summer annuals such as Petunias, Marigold, and Phlox will flower for Christmas. Vegetable seedlings need planting too. Ensure the growing patch is well nourished and plenty of mulch is used. Shrubs need tidying up and treatment for disease or insect attack. Hibiscus should be pruned and fed. Don't forget, it’s a good time to propagate some of the cuttings. Poinsettia’s need cutting back almost to the main trunk. Be careful to avoid the milky sap from this as it can be harmful to eyes and skin. It is wise to clean the sap from your tools while its fresh, too. Citrus trees would benefit from attention to remove sooty mould, scale and leaf miner. These trees are coming into bloom, so use insecticides that won't hurt the bees. Alas, we must not neglect the lawn. There's lots to check there, such as the levelling of uneven spots on planting lawn seed where needed, not to mention getting rid of weeds. If there are no changes in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic, on the 1st October, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club will meet at the Enoggera Memorial Hall in Trundle Street. At the time of going to press, arrangements for the guest speaker had not been confirmed, but be rest assured, the meeting will contain something of interest for those present. Please note that the hall is close to public transport and is accessible via wheelchair. The meeting commences immediately after morning tea which is served at 9.45am. Visitors and new members are most welcome. For more information, please phone the President, Pat on 3356 1256. www.echo-news.com.au

COUNSELLOR’S COLUMN with Robin Botic
The Five Languages of Love
There is a book that has been doing the rounds that I regularly recommend to my clients. It is by Gary Chapman and is called ‘The Five Languages of Love’. I really like his concept of seeing behavioural patterns in terms of languages. It is very readable, easy to understand and provides good explanations and concrete examples of how to go about finding out what you or your partner’s ‘Language of Love’ is and how to realistically enact those behaviours in your relationship. Chapman sets out the Five Languages as 1. Words of Affirmation; 2. Quality Time; 3. Receiving Gifts; 4. Acts of Service and 5. Physical Touch. While these are immediately recognisable patterns of behaviour it is well worth reading and taking in the detail. I myself am primarily a ‘Words of Affirmation’ person and I thought at this stage of my life, to feel ok about myself, I did not need validating words of what a good person I am or how well I had done something. BUT what I still do value, and find personally enriching to myself and within the relationship, is the affirmation of the sharing of values and goals and the discussion involved in this. You may think ‘Quality Time’ is more the point here (as I did) but in deciding this I realised it was more about what you are doing in this time. Affirming commonalities and beliefs needs time together, but it is different from primarily finding pleasure in sharing time, be it walking the beach or vegging out in front of TV together. With your partners language confusion can come about by inferring certain behaviours are expressing their language when these behaviours are a conditioned response aimed at eliciting
the language they want. For example, a client was a huge gift giver. His partner assumed this was his primary language. Wrong! It was Words of Affirmation. His mother loved gifts, that was her language and the way he would seek her praise was to do this. He repeated this pattern in his marriage but his partner was a quality time girl so you can guess in time what is going to unfold. Particularly if you throw into the mix, ‘if he/she loves me they should know what I want’. Mind readers, it will be shown, we are not. One strategy I find useful that I learned in early days of training with Relationships Australia is what we called Care Days. A couple had to clearly express their desires with regard to how each wanted love/care to be shown to them. (Note – there is “no” assuming the other should know here). The couple would take turns on alternate days to give what was asked for by their partners. At first couples struggling to get back into more positive interactions would describe the process as feeling a bit artificial but with continued practice, were surprised how soon they felt a softening and increased feelings of good will and generosity towards their partners. Human relationships have incredible complexity. While I don’t think that understanding and being able to enact the Languages of Love is the be all and end all of understanding self, the other, the relationship and making them work, is a vital support. The idea of languages is a great concept because it so full of very useful analogies. Often, clients who think they are ‘no good at this relationship stuff’ get it when they see their inability to meet their partner’s needs, not as a total and irretrievable lack in their make up, but as simply not understanding a language. Like any language it is a learnt skill, one which they are capable of learning if they WANT to. For us, it is about the wanting to and doing it that shows ‘me’ that you love me. This unlocks my guarded heart and allows me to show you love and regain hope. Robin

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: $100M UPGRADE OF THE INTERSECTION OF SOUTH PINE ROAD AND STAFFORD ROAD.
An LNP Government will commit $100m to the direct upgrade of the notorious Stafford and South Pine Roads intersection (stage 2). According to the RACQ, this intersection is in the top ten most congested bottlenecks in Brisbane. I have been applying pressure on the State Labor Government for the last five years for this upgrade. Last election, I committed $26m for Stage 1 of the upgrade, the Everton Park Link Road, which the Government eventually matched. This work has commenced and will be completed by 2021. I want to see work started on Stage 2 of this upgrade as soon as the Everton Park Link Road is complete. The intersection upgrade’s additional lanes and safety improvements for all road users will save travel time and save lives. This upgrade will give local businesses a boost by busting congestion, which will unlock their potential to create more

SEPTEM BER 2020
from the Arana Hills & Districts Senior Citizens Club Inc The Hills Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills
Unfortunately, as with a lot of other organisations, our club has ceased meeting since the onset of the coronavirus due to many of our members being in the age group susceptible to catching the virus. Our committee met on the 20th August to review the situation. It was decided that the committee organise a group discussion involving our members who wish to attend to assess their feelings in regards to opening our Seniors Club again. One of the difficulties we will face is the social distancing, which I feel will be with us for a while. Also, the amount of preparation needed before and after any meeting to comply with Government directives is quite considerable! In the mean time, be careful and stay healthy. We wish a speedy recovery to all of our sick members. Please give us a call if you need any further information. Till next time, Mike 0406 601 589

Dickson Seniors’ Expo Online Ordinarily we showcase many of these at the Dickson Seniors’ Expo of which I am the major sponsor and have helped host with the Dickson Seniors’ Council every year since 2004. This year the Expo has moved online and will be a virtual Seniors’ Expo engaging with many of the businesses and organisations who would attend as stallholders. Please visit https://www.peterdutton.com.au/dicksonseniors-expo/ to see the stall holders and gain access to the online platform. COVID-19 Vaccine The Government is working hard to ensure Australians have early access to any COVID-19 vaccine and are able to support our neighbours. There are currently over 160 COVID-19 vaccines in preclinical and clinical trials. National Cabinet has agreed to the COVID-19 Vaccine and Treatment Strategic Approach that provides a framework for securing early access to safe and effective vaccines and treatments. We are also auditing Australia’s COVID-19 vaccine and treatment manufacturing capability and capacity. The audit will assess current domestic industry capability to manufacture and support the roll-out of a COVID-19 vaccine. The Commonwealth is well progressed in a number of areas including: o Advance purchase agreements to secure direct purchase of vaccine or treatment doses.
Page 38 - September 2020, The Hills Echo
o Manufacturing agreements to establish arrangements to utilise and expand Australia’s manufacturing capability and capacity. o International and multilateral agreements to support and facilitate access for Australia and its region. o Procurement contracts to facilitate the purchase of goods, materials or services necessary for the distribution or deployment of vaccines and treatments. As the PM has said, ‘...whoever finds this vaccine must share it. Any country that were to find this vaccine and not make it available around the world without restraint, I think would be judged terribly by history.’ The Health Minister has said ‘I want to note that for the first time, I am cautiously but realistically optimistic about the search for and the ability to distribute a vaccine.’ I will keep you up to date as the situation progresses. Supporting Small Businesses There are a number of federal government initiatives available to support businesses as they move into the recovery phase of the coronavirus crisis. I’d particularly like to highlight the extension of the Coronavirus SME Guarantee Scheme which supports small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) to get access to the funding they need to adapt and innovate during the coronavirus crisis. Under the existing Scheme, the Government is providing an unprecedented level of support to SMEs in partnership with 44 approved lenders by guaranteeing 50 per cent of new unsecured loans to SMEs. The Scheme has already seen more than 15,600 businesses accept loans worth $1.5 billion. The next phase of the Coronavirus SME Guarantee Scheme will help businesses move out of hibernation, successfully adapt to the new COVID-safe economy and invest for the future. The expanded Scheme will allow businesses to access more credit for a longer period of time. Some key changes to the Scheme include extending the purpose of loans for a wider range of investment, increasing the maximum loan size from $250,000 to $1 million per borrower and increasing the maximum loan term from three years to five years. The extended terms of the Scheme will enable lenders to continue supporting Australian small businesses when they need it most. The expanded Scheme will shift from providing access to working capital to helping businesses stay afloat during the crisis to now also enabling them to access more affordable and longer term credit so that they can invest for their future. The Morrison Government will continue to support small businesses as they seek to rebuild, adapt and create jobs on the other side of the coronavirus crisis. What’s important to you? I’m working hard to make our community even better but I can’t do it on my own. I need your help to make sure we get the priorities right. With your help, and by working together, I know we can get the upgrades, facilities and opportunities our community needs to be even better. Please get in touch with me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au or 3205 9977 to let me know your priorities. Or you can drop in to my office at 3/199 Gympie Road in Strathpine during business hours. Supporting local clubs and not-for-profits
Students and staff at Patricks Road State School will be over the moon to know that they will be getting their much-anticipated hall extension. The project will include a permanent performance stage and music room, as well as an outdoor deck and new terraced seating and kitchen area. The hall extension has been designed and championed by the talented and hardworking P&C and required an extra injection of funds to get the project over the line and with this extra designation of funding by the Palaszczuk Government the hall extension project will become a reality.

Supporting local business
Fifty-one local businesses in the Ferny Grove Electorate have shared in over $460,000 in Small Business Adaption Grants. The grants are part of the Palaszczuk Government’s Unite and Recover strategy to support small businesses and keep people in work and keep businesses trading during the COVID-19 pandemic. We have seen a tremendous change in the way countless businesses work with many for example, now opting for a greater online presence. These grants have provided a direct and immediate support for that transition.
