A Season of Growth and Cultivation
An update from the Hills Organic Garden
Our summer months have been rather hot and humid with very little grown, eventuating in not much produce to share. Nevertheless, autumn has arrived and will no doubt offer cooler temperatures, whichwill be welcomed!
There is a lot of work to be done at the garden this month with a view to getting the beds ready for planting. They all need topping up with new soil, compost along with the application of fertiliser followed by a rest period. Planting will take place when the temperatures get cooler to give the young plants a chance to survive and grow.
This year's vegetable planting will consist of broccoli, spinach, radish, snow peas, silver beet, cauliflower, cabbages, zucchinis, eggplant, lettuce, beetroot and tomatoes. It is not recommended to plant the same crop in the same bed as the previous season, so we will be ensuring crop rotation is carried out.
HOG members always remark that this is a fun time of the year, but also a busy one as the newly planted seedlings require regular watering and fertilising.
The HOG community is a friendly group who offer people in the Hills District the opportunity to grow vegetables using organic principles. Age is no barrier so feel free to come along one Sunday afternoon to have a chat and a look around our beautiful garden. Members meet on a Sunday afternoon during the summer months from 3pm - 5pm. As well, they also attend the garden through the week to water and do general maintenance.
You will find the group at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors.
Visit hog.org.au, search ‘The Hills Organic Garden’ on Facebook or phone 0415 856 532 for information. The team look forward to meeting you.

Embrace Nature: Join a Garden Club
An update from the Mitchelton & Districts Garden Club
Last month, our Club learned that an understanding of geology is vital for gardening success. Guest Speaker Bruce Ham, from The Brisbane Organic Growers Inc. (BOGI), explained the ways in which geological influences affect soil for gardening. These included:
pH Levels: The mineral composition of the parent material affects the pH level of the soil. Soils derived from limestone or basalt, for example, may be more alkaline, while those from granite may be more acidic. An awareness of this geology helps gardeners choose plants that will thrive in an environment aligning with their pH preferences.
Mineral and Nutrient Content: The geological parent material contributes essential nutrients to the soil. For instance, volcanic soils often provide plants with essential nutrients like potassium. Soils derived from granite will have a different mineral composition than those derived from limestone, contributing specific nutrients to the soil which impact upon plant growth. Knowing the nutrient and mineral profile of your soil means you are better able to make informed decisions about fertilization to address deficiencies.
In the coming months, our Guest Speakers will cover a variety of gardening topics, including Native Plants and Begonias. For more information, please feel free to email us at mitcheltongc@gmail.com. Our meetings are held at The Enoggera Memorial Hall (Trundle St) on the first Thursday of the month. Doors open at 9:30 am and the $5.00 entry fee includes morning tea - hope to see you there soon!

An Open Invitation to Commemorate ANZAC Day
The Samford Historical Museum extends a warm invitation to all on ANZAC Day, Thursday 25th April to explore the rich history and heritage housed within its walls. The museum will open its doors from 9 am to 2 pm, offering a myriad of experiences for visitors of all ages.
Nestled within the museum's collection is the War Memories building which was once Grovely Railway Station. This building now hosts an incredible display of memorabilia and remembrances from various conflicts. Particularly poignant at this time of year is the Charge of the Beersheba Mount, a captivating exhibit that pays homage to the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.
In addition to the historical displays, visitors will be treated to a delightful array of refreshments. From the quintessential sausage sizzle to homemade Anzac biscuits – with gluten-free options available – and the comforting warmth of pea and ham soup, there's something to tantalize every palate. Not to be missed is the freshly made damper with syrup, served alongside a steaming cup of billy tea.
Throughout the day, a host of activities and demonstrations will keep visitors engaged. Craft enthusiasts can marvel at the skilled hands of our craft lady, while history buffs can glean insights from our knowledgeable WWI and WWII experts. Children and adults alike will relish the treasure hunt, while the rhythmic clang of the blacksmith's hammer and the hum of restored engines evoke bygone eras.
For those keen to delve deeper into local history, books authored by local historians and a reminiscence collection
will be available for purchase. Moreover, visitors interested in joining our dedicated team of volunteers are encouraged to speak with President Mike on the day. The Samford Historical Museum is a testament to the tireless efforts of its volunteers, who work diligently to preserve and showcase our heritage. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply curious about the past, ANZAC Day at the museum promises an enriching experience for all. For further information, please contact 07 3289 2743.

24/7 Prescription Collection a Game Changer for the Region
Commuters, busy parents, and patients with repeat prescriptions often find waiting at the pharmacy during business hours a challenge.
However, our community can now rejoice as local pharmacy, TerryWhite Chemmart Upper Kedron,, has become the first pharmacy in Australia to introduce the Pharmaself24, a secure and convenient 24-hour prescription collection system.
Owned by Tahnee Simpson and her business partners, this pioneering initiative aims to redefine the patient experience by offering flexibility in prescription collection. Ms. Simpson expressed excitement about this new venture, stating, ‘As pharmacists, we are dedicated to caring for our patients in every way possible. This 24/7 collection point is an additional way for patients to conveniently collect their medicines.’
Understanding the unique needs of the local community, Ms. Simpson highlighted the challenges faced by those working beyond typical business hours. ‘From working parents to commuters, this additional layer of convenience builds upon the care we can provide,’ she added.
Patients can access the 24/7 collection service when requesting prescriptions or other pharmacy items, either in-store, online, or via the myTWC app. Once ready for collection, a one-time SMS is sent to the patient, utilising customised and secure software for access.
Ms. Simpson emphasized the commitment to exceptional service, stating, ‘We are proud to provide exceptional service and a high level of care for all customers. For many, being able
A local resident enjoying the benefits of after hours prescription collection
to save time and collect their pharmacy needs at a convenient time will make their lives easier, and our pharmacists are always available for advice and enquiries.’
Located in the newly opened Ellendale Village Shopping Centre, TerryWhite Chemmart Upper Kedron, owned by Tahnee Simpson and Blaine Woods, aims to elevate customer service for the local community. The experienced pharmacy team is excited about the opportunities the Pharmaself24 brings to enhance patient care.

$500M masterplanned community begins its transition up the Keperra hillside
Frasers Property Australia is officially transitioning up the iconic Keperra hillside with the second release of elevated homesites at The Quarry to meet buyer demand, as purchasers embrace the opportunity to live in one of the largest urban transformations in Brisbane’s history.
Spanning 48.7 hectares just 9.5km from the CBD, the $500 million master planned precinct is transforming the Keperra Quarry into Brisbane’s most elevated community featuring a mix of about 500 home and land sites, architecturally designed terrace homes, extensive placemaking and shared resort style amenity.
Scott Ullman, General Manager Queensland Development at Frasers Property Australia, said interest on Release Two remained strong and featured a selection of 20 level lots, ready for home construction by mid-2024.
‘Release Two is the first collection of homesites that transition up the hillside of The Quarry and with that comes sweeping views of the D’Aguilar Range and beyond,’ Mr Ullman said.
‘It’s also positioned close to the recently completed cliffside staircase lookout, which has become a popular exercise destination akin to the iconic Kangaroo Point Cliffs, and only a two-minute walk to ClubQ.
‘ClubQ is the heart of The Quarry community, offering elevated, luxury resort style amenities for residents to relax, indulge and entertain, including an entertainer's kitchen, dining room, event spaces, library and work zones’.
Other ClubQ amenities include a 25m lap pool with an adjoining sun deck, sunset lounges and a generous green oval ideal for family occasions.
Two additional resort-style walk-in pools with an integrated waterfall and kids splash and play area, and a private wellness centre featuring a fully equipped gymnasium and meditation room will form part of the precinct’s future amenity.
Mr Ullman said future homeowners would be immersed in the landscape and history of The Quarry, while at the same time contributing to the rewilding of the hillside.
‘More than 40 per cent of the community is dedicated to existing bushland and newly curated green spaces, resident amenities and nature play spaces, alongside more than 100,000 new plants and trees in a true mission towards regeneration,’ he said.
‘Homes will front tree-lined streets and beautifully curated landscapes. It will be unrecognisable as a quarry in the fullness of time.’
Located in Brisbane’s north-west, Keperra is an established suburb with strong demand for new housing supply due to its proximity to leading schools, healthcare and major transport infrastructure.
The existing Keperra Quarry, which mines granite, has operated for more than 60 years and will progressively curb operations as the development of the residential stages advance.
Of the 20 lots in Release Two, 15 are ridgeline view and traditional homesites ranging from 293sqm to 542sqm, priced from $625,000. The remaining five lots are north-facing, entrylevel and low maintenance homesites ranging from 262sqm to 332sqm with prices starting from $585,000.

A Century of Wisdom: The Secrets to a Well-Lived Life at 102
At 102 years young, local resident Elizabeth Carse, affectionately known as Betty, radiates vitality and shares her simple yet profound secrets to a well-lived life. Betty attributes her longevity and well-being to a combination of faith, good food, exercise, and engaging hobbies.
Betty emphasizes the importance of staying active, stating,‘Any exercise is good, but I have always done chair exercises.’ Her routine includes a variety of activities such as indoor Bowls, Bingo, Hoy, armchair travel, and music concerts. She also indulges her love for literature by devouring numerous novels each month.
Born and raised in Brisbane, Betty spent her early years south of the river in Morningside. Attending Morningside Primary School alongside her sisters Norma and Alma, Betty left school in Grade 7 to care for her mother. Subsequently, she worked in the Nestlé office until her marriage to Herbert, a move that saw her call the northside home after relocating to Kedron. Reflecting on her life choices, Betty shares, ‘Raising my children is one of the proudest things I have done in my life.’ After marrying Herbert, she dedicated herself to raising their four children, cherishing the experience. Now in her golden years, Betty feels fortunate to be surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Betty celebrated her 102nd birthday on March 12, at the Keperra Sanctuary where she now resides. She also has a valuable piece of advice to younger generations, urging
them to ‘always keep a level mind.’ This nugget of wisdom encapsulates Betty's approach to life, emphasizing the importance of maintaining balance and equanimity in the face of life's challenges.
In a world where the pursuit of well-being and longevity often involves complex solutions, Elizabeth Carse stands as a testament to the power of faith, good food, exercise, and meaningful hobbies.
Happy Birthday Betty!

Local Digger Awarded Major Army Honour
In a testament to unwavering compassion and bravery, Private Caleb Walker from the 6 Royal Australian Regiment at Gallipoli Barracks has been recognised in the 2024 Jonathan Church Good Soldiering Awards (JCGSA).
These awards acknowledge soldiers who go above and beyond in displaying exceptional humanity, whether it's supporting victims of genocide or providing life-saving assistance during critical moments.
Private Walker, this year's award ambassador, was lauded for his outstanding humanitarian aid work in Rwanda. At his own expense, he traveled to the African nation to contribute to the renovation of a facility providing psychiatric help to those affected by genocide. Walker's commitment to the well-being of others began with his first visit to Africa in 2005, where he developed a deep connection and a desire to continually support Rwanda.
In addition to his international humanitarian efforts, Private Walker exhibited profound compassion closer to home.
Following the death of his section commander in 2022, he consistently checked in on his fellow soldiers after hours, showcasing his commitment to the wellbeing of his comrades.
Private Walker is one of five recipients this year, each recognised for their extraordinary acts of courage and compassion.
As part of their recognition, the recipients will embark on a journey to Papua New Guinea later this year. The trip will include battlefield tours and walking sections of the historic Kokoda Track, providing an opportunity to further honor their dedication to service and heroism.

Taking Learning to New Heights
Tiffany Steinitz, 2023 graduate of Mt Maria College, Mitchelton, knew she did not want to go to university. Instead, she envisioned herself entering the Australian Defence Force.
‘I always struggled with school. I learn best by getting my hands dirty which VET allowed me to do. I’m so grateful for the Mrs Khursheed Ward, VET Pathways Coordinator, for enrolling me into my course and providing me a clear pathway for my future,’ said Tiffany.
Enrolled in a Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot), Tiffany took her learning to new heights and experienced things she never thought she would. At just 16, Tiffany earnt her Government Drone License and English Proficiency License. In early 2023, Tiffany applied to the Australian Defence Force – Army as a drone operator. She was originally successful in her application before she experienced a setback. Having been diagnosed with both ADHD and Dyslexia, Tiffany never imagined this would stop her from reaching her dream job. Following a second round of interviews, Tiffany wowed the recruiters with her qualifications and her passion for aviation.
Acknowledging her drive, her dedication, and her persistence to overcome obstacles, Tiffany was successfully recruited to her dream role.
Tiffany already has her eyes set on her next goals, acknowledging
the sky is not the limit! She aims to have a long career with the Defence Force and is currently studying a Certificate III in Meteorology. Understanding the weather seems like the next logical step to excelling in the drone field to Tiffany.

Bush Tucker and Native Trees at MPC
Mitchelton Pre-Schooling Centre (MPC) has been in operation since 1949, generations of families have cherished memories and a connection to our community kindergarten.
Over the last few years, we have been building our knowledge and understanding of the Indigenous Peoples in this area and are encouraging the children to begin to build a greater Indigenous awareness of the lands and waterways where we learn and play. Our focus on sustainability and the environment acknowledges the First Nations People's care and use of the land for over 60,000 years and the importance for us to learn from them.
MPC is continuing to provide habitat not only for our nurtured and much-loved wildlife that visit our leafy grounds, but we aim to provide opportunities to grow more native trees and bush tucker species in our grounds.
Last year we invited Uncle Bruce Morgan from ‘Murri Tukka’ to visit our space and provide an opportunity for the children to experience eating bush foods firsthand. After Uncle Bruces’ visit, we knew this was the time to take action in our gardens! We were lucky enough to win two community grants to purchase plants for our bush tucker gardens and extend our native plant species.
The children participated in making decisions around which of the bush foods they tried with Uncle Bruce and what they would like planted. We talked with them about the need for sun and not taking up too much of our play spaces, so pots and vertical gardens were used. As we are a community
Kindergarten, we asked for volunteers amongst our parents to come and help with the planting. We have increased our native plant species by nearly 40 in our Kindy gardens from this initiative.
As the year progresses the children will begin to learn about the plants. Each of the Native Bush Food plants are labelled to illustrate what part of the plant is safe to eat or use for medicinal purposes. Our hope, over time we will be able to pick various parts or fruits of the plants for children to sample or use in cooking experiences. At this stage, many of our plants are still in the infancy stage and not ready to produce fruits, but in time and with care we are looking forward to these opportunities. Do you have any Native or Bush Food plants growing in your garden at home? Want to find out more information? We would encourage you to attend community events or Indigenous workshops like ‘Murri Tukka’ to find out what plants are suited to your area.

A VIEW to Making a Difference
TidBits
An update from the Arana Hills & Districts Senior Citizens Club Inc
Life gets messy, busy, complicated and unpredictable sometimes. In the New Year, an ‘all or nothing’ approach to your New Year’s health focussed resolution just doesn’t last. So, incorporating a plan that is realistic and sustainable is of upmost importance.
Arana VIEW Club is reaching out to the vibrant women of the community, extending a heartfelt invitation to join them at their next meeting. As part of the VIEW network, which stands for Voice, Interests, and Education of Women, Arana VIEW Club provides a platform for women to connect, enjoy social activities, and develop enduring friendships – all while contributing to the noble cause of children’s education through The Smith Family.
As the cooler weather approaches, although winter is not yet upon us, it's an opportune time to engage in community activities.
be everyday for everybody.
Exercise is medicine and along with a manageable eating and lifestyle plan you will see the change and feel the difference. This is not Bootcamp but a sustainable way to live in your body and love your life.
Last month, the ladies enjoyed a presentation from their fabulous guest speaker Mary Li Qld Ballet with 106 people attending. Next month (March) the guest speaker will be Bob Walker, a Fair Trading Community Engagement Officer. He will chat about the increasingly high cost of living.
In addition, the club will be celebrating their upcoming 27th Birthday. Entertainment will feature The Divine Divas, plus the theme is ‘100 years of Hollywood’ so dress as your favourite filmstar.
Focusing on daily choices that are achievable and simple will create changes that don’t just last until March when your effort and energy has run out, but are long lasting. Here are 12 real-world ways that can help you achieve your health goals in 2024.
1. Eat protein for breakfast to keep your insulin levels steady and appetite satisfied.
2
. Eat slow, chew your food.
3. Eat healthy meals. You will not lose weight by skipping two meals a day. Your body needs quality adequate calories from carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
Seniors, often encouraged to maintain a keen interest in their surroundings, find value in exploring new experiences. Actively participating in various pursuits not only stimulates the mind but also contributes to a youthful spirit. Instead of succumbing to boredom at home and dwelling on the challenges the world faces, consider joining a welcoming club like the Arana Hills and District Seniors. This not only offers a chance for enjoyable moments but also provides an excellent opportunity to forge new friendships. We meet every Friday at 9am. Cards and Hoy are played the 12th and 26th of April, Bingo and Cards on the 19th April and the 3rd May. Indoor bowls take place every Friday and Wednesday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm.
If you are looking for a bit of socialisation have a think about joining us. We meet The Hills Community Hall, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills. Yearly membership is only $7, admission on activity day is only $5, which includes coffee tea and biscuits, so give it some thought.
The club welcomes women of all backgrounds and ages to join their meetings, held on the first Wednesday of each month at Arana Leagues Club, Dawson Parade, Grovely. Gatherings commence at 10:30am for 11am, offering a twocourse lunch for $35, inclusive of tea and coffee. To learn more or confirm your attendance, contact Carol at 3355 5349 by noon the Thursday before the meeting.
4. Include exercise snacks in your day. Maybe one minute of steps, squats or wall pushups whenever possible. This keeps your energy levels boosted whilst burning calories.
5. Learn about how food affects your body, so you can burn fat more efficiently.
6. Strength training is your secret weapon. Muscle preserves age, keeps you toned and takes up less space than fat.
If you have never played any of the above mentioned activities, don’t let that stop you as we are very keen to teach you. Furthermore, your first attendance is a free trial so give it a go, you can’t lose. For more information, ring Marcia on 0438 786 871.

THE FERNY REPORT
by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove
Samford Road / Glen Holm Street Project Update
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have confirmed the commencement of the Glen Holm Street Turning Pocket Project with an expected finish date of early 2025. The upgrades will add a dedicated unsignalised right-turn lane into Glen Holm Street to improve traffic efficiency and safety, and ease afternoon peak congestion. As every motorist who uses Samford Road knows, if you get stuck behind a single car turning right at that intersection, you can be there for ages. This upgrade will fix that issue. (See map.)
During the project there will be temporary traffic changes including shoulder & lane closures, speed limit reductions and short-term traffic disruptions. Pedestrian access on the southern side of Samford Road between Glen Retreat Road and Hoben Street will be closed during the works and pedestrians will be diverted to the footpath on the northern side of Samford Road. Pedestrian access to bus-stop 002064 near Fenwick Park will remain open. Nearby residents and businesses may experience short term increases in noise, dust, and odour during the works. Reversing beepers and flashing lights will be used on vehicles for safety. Also, there will be some disruptions to utilities in the area. Any impacts will be communicated directly by service providers.
I have been also advised the road widening will necessitate the removal of five mature fig trees and four juvenile streetscape trees to enable widening of the intersection. TMR is working closely with Brisbane City Council to finalise an offset plan.
Premier’s Coding Challenge now open!
The Premier's Coding Challenge is an annual state-wide initiative for all Queensland students from Years 3 to 10 to increase engagement with STEM.
This year’s theme is #digitalinnovationqld. Students are invited to develop an innovative digital solution to help make their school a better place to teach, learn and play and may enter as an individual or as a pair. Submissions close on 2 September 2024. For more information, go to: https://tinyurl.com/ zu73y5v6
Meningococcal B Vaccinations
We know that Meningococcal B can be lethal. That’s why the Miles Government is investing more than ever before in this state-funded vaccination program to make the usually $100 vaccine free to eligible infants and adolescents.
Last year, 36 cases of meningococcal B disease were reported in Queensland, and at the time of writing, two cases have been recorded this year so far. This is why it is so important to get protected.
Who is eligible? Year 10 students will be among the first to receive the vaccine through scheduled Queensland School Immunisation Program visits. All infants and children under two, and adolescents aged 15 to 19, are also eligible to receive the vaccine.

• 20 April (8:00am) Little Uncle Bakery – Ferny Grove Shopping Village, Ferny Grove
In March I had the great pleasure of officially opening the new TerryWhite Chemmart in Upper Kedron. The team have worked very hard to create a modern and accessible service in an area which has so far not had enough amenity. This is now changing. The most striking part of the new store is revolutionary 24/7 prescription collection system which will be of great assistance to shift workers and everyone who finds their life just doesn’t have enough hours in the day.

Happy Easter
Dickson News
Warm wishes to you and your loved ones for Easter! Easter embodies hope, renewal, and the joy of being together with family. Have a wonderful holiday, and if you‘re on the road, stay safe!
ANZAC Day
ANZAC Day is our chance to let our servicemen and women – past and present – know that their service and sacrifice is remembered, appreciated, and honoured.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a significant event in history. Over 6,000 ships and 10,000 aircraft gathered at Normandy‘s beaches in France. Among them were Australian airmen who bravely supported this massive operation.
On D-Day, 13 Australians lost their lives, with many more casualties during the Normandy campaign. In total, 39,657 Australians lost their lives in service during World War II. Look out for my Commemorative Newsletter in your mailbox, and I encourage you to attend a local service.

Labor’s Tax on the Family Car
Labor wants to tax new cars. A lot of Aussie’s rely on SUVs for family needs and utes for work. The Labor Governments proposed tax on these vehicles could hike up prices by thousands of dollars, possibly leading car makers to pull out of the Australian market.
Under Labor, Australians will pay:
• $11,020 more for a Toyota RAV4
• $12,180 more for an MG ZS
• $25,050 more for a Toyota Landcruiser
• $17,950 more for a Ford Ranger
• $14,490 more for a Toyota Hilux; and
• $13,830 more for an Isuzu D-Max.
While not everyone drives a SUV or ute, I’ll fight against Labor’s new taxes, especially during this cost-of-living crisis.
JP Services
JP services are available at my Strathpine office. JPs play a crucial role in the community by assisting residents with various legal matters, such as witnessing signatures, certifying documents, and administering oaths and affirmations.

LNP Promise - Women’s Economic Security Plan
Women shouldn't be locked-out of a job because they can’t afford the cost of job-seeking.
The LNP has announced, if successful in this year’s election, a $20 million financial assistance package to support women returning to the workforce.
If a woman has left her employment for longer than six months to focus on family care, then we should do everything we can to support her when she chooses the time is right to find a new job. Grants of up to $5,000 will help cover the costs of essentials such as; workwear, childcare, Re-certification and training, CV prep, Technology and relocation.
It’s just one part of the LNP’s Women’s Economic Security Plan and will tackle the economic barriers currently preventing women from re-joining the workforce.
New Everton Park Library Is Now Open
Last Saturday 9th March saw the opening of our new Library, which is a welcome addition to our local community hub in Everton Park. The renewal has also built on improvements to Fallon Park and a car park upgrade at Everton Park Bowls and Community Club.
Student Leadership (LEAP) Day
On 1st March I was pleased to be guest speaker at the Student Leadership Day – this year hosted by Albany Hills State School. This event (known as LEAP Day) has now been an annual occurrence for the last 15 years and sees the student leaders from the cluster of schools - Albany Hills State School, Albany Creek State School, McDowall State School, and Eatons Hill State School join together to learn all about being better leaders.
It’s a pleasure to see these bright young students eager to learn more about becoming good leaders in not only their schools, but communities as well.
