Innovative Oyster Project Kicks Off in Pine River

In a pioneering move, 40 Robust Oyster Baskets (ROBs) have been positioned in Pine River's upper estuarine region downstream of Unitywater's Murrumba Downs Wastewater Treatment Plant. This initiative marks the commencement of the Oyster Reef Restoration Project, aiming to assess the role of oysters in nutrient filtration. Unitywater's five-year, $464k commitment seeks to revolutionize shellfish reef restoration and wastewater treatment practices. Delivered in partnership with Unitywater, OzFish, the University of Sunshine Coast, and Healthy Land and Water, this Australian-first project aligns with the QLD Water Quality Offset Policy. The 400 sqmm 'reef' baskets, laden with 18 kg of recycled oyster shells, will foster a diverse range of species including oysters, mussels, and mollusks. After a year-long soak in Moreton Bay, these pre-seeded baskets are set to enhance the collective impact of the reef. Ivan Beirne, Unitywater's Acting Executive Manager for Sustainable Infrastructure Solutions, anticipates this innovative approach will drive them toward their net-zero goals by 2040, safeguarding the environment while bolstering local water and wastewater services. Robbie Porter, OzFish senior project officer for shellfish reef restoration said they are thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking initiative. ‘By joining forces with Unitywater, The University of Sunshine Coast, and Healthy Land and Water, we have a unique opportunity to explore the potential of shellfish reefs in restoring our aquatic ecosystems, improving wastewater treatment practices, and the possibility of supporting

sustainable aquaculture,’ he said. ‘This collaborative effort brings together each partner’s expertise, resources, and passion to drive meaningful change in marine conservation and environmental stewardship. ‘This research is going to be very exciting; it will open up opportunities for restoration and has the potential to look at shellfish reef restoration as a meaningful path for offset.’ ‘It will paint a bigger picture about how important shellfish reefs are to our ecosystem and give real data to showcase the work they do in filtering nutrients.’

Local Men’s Shed Seeking New Home

With membership on the rise at The Dickson Community Men’s Shed, their need for a shed of their own has never been greater.

Increasing social isolation is far from news at this point—it’s all around, especially amongst our broad senior community. In response, the Men’s Shed Movement for mental health has become an integral source of companionship and purpose for hundreds Members of the Dickson Men’s Shed of men across Brisbane and the Moreton Bay Region. However, to prevent men having to travel long distances to their nearest shed, a surplus of sheds has popped up. It seems The Dickson Community Men’s Shed may be clutching the short straw. When it comes to home-hunting, the Dickson Shed hasn’t had much luck. In fact, it was well over a year ago that, Doug Gaw and Paul Holstein spoke to the Council about claiming a block of land for the community group. Long story short, they still haven’t been given a thumbs-up. The men have thus stuck to twice-monthly Wednesday meets at the Four Mile Creek Hotel, until securing a timeslot at the Albany Creek Community Centre this October. Of course, these meets are beneficial in themselves through simply getting the men together for a cuppa and a laugh. As are the times they visit other sheds such as the Burpengary Men’s Shed for a change, which is one of the largest, most established sheds in the area. It is, unfortunately, a tad bittersweet. “It’s a bit of a catch 22,” President Keith Marshal jested in reference to the Dickson Shed. “It’s like telling people to come play football with no field to play on.” “We’re like a pub with no beer!” The members continued the running joke. The Dickson Shed seeks to provide a safe, supportive and friendly environment for men of all ages to gather with like-minded people, learn new skills, and teach others their tricks of the trade. However, this isn’t yet possible for these local men. Not until they secure a permanent home to settle into. Secretary Des Leonard shared all the possibilities that would open up once they achieved this goal; the men could participate in metal work and woodwork like other sheds, have a communal kitchen for cooking classes and shared lunches, hold arts and crafts classes, and even invite guest speakers to join them at homebase. Des also made a point that, with the Dickson’s catchment including Albany Creek, Brendale, Eatons Hill and Strathpine—an ever-growing, rapidly populating region—membership has potential to skyrocket once they gain more publicity and better facilities. Currently, the Dickson Shed has twenty four members, but have recently had a spike in expressions of interest. Anyone interested in learning more about The Dickson Community Men’s Shed, please contact Des on dicksonmensshed@gmail.com

Bold Step to Address Homelessness

The City of Moreton Bay is offering Councilowned land for community housing and specialist homelessness providers. This groundbreaking initiative aims to provide social, affordable, and crisis housing solutions for those in need.

Parcels of Council land in Morayfield and Caboolture have been identified for potential activation as housing options. The vacant land at 33 Oakey Flat Road, Morayfield, and 72 and 74 Cox Street, Caboolture will undergo planning scheme requirements, with an expression of interest set to be released by year-end. Registered notfor-profit community housing providers and specialist homelessness services will receive a peppercorn lease for 50 years to develop the sites, marking a first-time move for the Council. Mayor Peter Flannery emphasized the 33 Oakey Flat Road, Morayfield urgency of addressing homelessness, highlighting that it affects a diverse range of individuals, from parents with young children to professionals. He cited the need for cooperation between the Council and housing providers to create and manage crisis, social, or affordable housing.

Northwest Community Projects: The Power of Giving Back

By Georgia Wright Paul and Noi Slater, a local couple who are passionate about preventing homelessness, share that ‘the sky is the limit’ for their charity, Northwest Community Project Inc. The grass-roots movement stemmed from the Slater’s motivation to bring aid to those at risk of homelessness. However, their passion now extends to the whole community, as well as empowering everyone to work together and help those in need. After signing up to multiple charities in early 2023 and being exposed to the extremity of struggle in Brisbane, Paul was inspired to take matters into his capable hands. He shares, ‘I saw a post on my local Facebook group where someone was giving away clothes, and the response was overwhelming. I didn‘t realise there was such a need for clothing. I decided to make a conscious effort to bring in more clothes [to the locations he held give-away stands], and then a table to put it on—then two, which became three, which has now turned into seven tables!’ It was at this point that Northwest Community Project Inc was born. The Slaters have since expanded to include toiletries, socks, underwear, tents, sleeping bags, blankets, and pantry items—pretty much anything Paul can fit in his van! Their stands pop up at Musgrave Park, Kurilpa Point Park and in Fortitude Valley once each week. The organisation’s long-term goal is to set up a free shop, where people can donate and take clothing free of charge. A big focus will be on corporate

Page 10 - November 2023, The Eatons Echo

wear to enable people going for jobs to look their best. Paul also hopes to incorporate Bubble & Squeak into the shop, as they are another amazing project that provides high end clothing—even prom dresses—for rent. Moreover, Northwest Community Project Inc has partnered with Ferny Grove Tavern to make the rising costs of living just that little less impossible to afford. Together, they have already hosted a community lunch for R U OK day, which was paid for by the local tavern. A mix of like-minded supporters and community members who are struggling, all joined together at the lunch for conversations and laughs. With an ever-increasing epidemic of social isolation in our society, opportunities for interconnectedness like this have a huge positive impact. Also, with Ferny Grove Tavern’s help, Northwest Community Project Inc has been enabled to combat costs through setting up a community pantry. People in need can walk in anytime to grab a hamper of pantry foods. With almost no advertising, 40 hampers have already found new homes. The organization also provides emergency funding for people in high-risk situations and specific help for those who move into public housing. As Paul said himself, ‘a little push can be the thing that gets you back on your feet and pushing through again’. But how can you get involved? Donations—whether they are dollar bills or items to put in the next batch of hampers—can be dropped off anytime to 29 Ballylin St, Ferny Grove. However, individuals, businesses and organisations are all welcome to phone up Paul on 0432 559 313 or jump on the website www.nwcg.org.au for further discussion. ‘We love working with local businesses,’ Paul shares. ‘We always tell our followers to support businesses who support our community.’ Good karma, that is, to never underestimate the power of giving back.

Ferny Nourish Bowl Served with a Side of Success

By Georgia Wright A tuckshop favourite at Ferny Grove State High School is fast becoming one of Queensland’s most famed healthy dishes.

In recent years, food fads have begun to emerge under the influence of a modern push toward healthier, more sustainable meals. Some popular trends that have made waves across the globe are plant-based eating—especially the innovation of plant-based proteins as an alternative to meat—sustainable and local sourcing of ingredients, a shift toward healthier fast food, exploration of ancient grains such as quinoa and farro, and the introduction of nourishing, balanced-palette ‘bowl’ meals. Looking to expand the menu at Ferny Grove State High School Eats at the Grove Canteen, the lovely ladies behind the counter mashed all these trends together to craft the Ferny Nourish Bowl. While food trends may come and go, appreciation for dishes that not only please the palate but nourish the body remain timeless. The Ferny Nourish Bowl is one such delicious innovation, carefully prepared to offer a vibrant, healthy meal that doesn’t compromise on flavour. At its essence, the Ferny Nourish Bowl is a rice and quinoa salad, rich with vegetables and vegan-friendly Green Goddess dressing. In order for the bowl to remain affordable all year round, the vegetables used in the dish depend upon what’s in season at the time. Some popular additions to the bowl include roasted zucchini, onion, capsicum, cucumber, roasted sweet potato, or cherry tomatoes.

The award winning Ferny Nourish Bowl

This September, The Ferny Nourish Bowl was announced on 7 News’ programme Sunrise to be one of six finalists in the Queensland Association of School Tuckshop’s annual recipe of the year competition. The Grove Canteen and X Block Senior Cafe manager and convenor at Ferny Grove, Megan Towner, admits that the nourish bowl was originally targeted toward teachers, but became a student favourite—especially for senior girls. Having worked at the Grove Canteen for a whole decade now, Ms Towner was not shocked by this; she believes student’s palettes have evolved to encompass healthier, greener food choices. Ferny Grove State High School’s canteen sells about 400 main meals, as well as snacks and daily breakfast items—all with high emphasis on fresh, tasty flavours and health-wise offers. It seems the modern push toward sustainable, nourishing meals is only gaining more and more momentum.

19 Shades of Grey...hounds

Most animal lovers will agree that one dog just isn’t enough, but for Mike and Kathy McGuill, two wasn’t enough, either … or even three.

In fact, the McGuills have fostered a total of 19 greyhounds with the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) Queensland, and now they’re ready for lucky number 20! Mike and Kathy have retirement all figured out in Ferny Hills, southeast Queensland, spending their days surrounded by adorable foster greyhounds in between their global travels. Kathy said she and her husband began fostering in 2016 to suit their travelling lifestyle. ‘We decided to foster because it meant we were never tied to the dog, and when they found their new home, we’d go on holidays,’ she said. ‘Every dog developed at a different pace, some took six weeks to adjust to home life, and others took longer, like one who took six months.’ It was only a matter of time before they met a foster they couldn’t let go. The McGuills adopted their sixteenth foster dog, Napolean, after he stole their hearts. ‘They’re all such incredible, laid back and gorgeous creatures, every single one of them makes you melt,’ Kathy said. ‘We fostered three more after adopting Napolean because he calms them down and makes them feel at home.’ Kathy said it is rewarding and heart-warming to watch her foster greyhounds’ personalities transform as they learn new skills and gained confidence. ‘They often don’t understand things like stairs, the sound of traffic, so it’s a big scary world out there and it’s important to

Mike and Kathy with some of the Greyhounds they have adopted over the years be gentle and patient,’ she said. ‘When it comes to the end and they go to a forever home, the GAP staff send through adoption updates and to just know they found a good home is really the best feeling. They’re simply the best creatures and we’re very much looking forward to seeing who we get next.’ For more information about the Greyhound Adoption Program, visit https://gapqld.com.au/

Gala Fundraiser to Support Youth with Disabilities and Mental Health

A Queensland mum determined to make a difference in the lives of young people with hidden disabilities and mental illness is calling for community support ahead of a gala fundraising event in Brisbane.

The gala dinner at the Queensland Cricketers Club on November 24 will raise funds for not-for-profits Smart Pups and headspace national Youth Mental Health Foundation. Smart Pups provides assistance dogs to children with special needs. This unique form of early intervention therapy has a profound effect on the day-to-day lives of children and their families, improving physical health and safety, independence, confidence, self-esteem, social interaction, life experience, happiness and wellbeing. headspace delivers early intervention mental health support to young people aged from 12 to 25 years. The event is the brainchild of Brisbane woman Shannon Lockyer, whose 8-year-old son Eli lives with Autism, ADHD and Anxiety. ‘Parenting an eight-year-old is already tough, but when you add in his special needs, every day is different and challenging for our family,’ Shannon says. ‘Unfortunately, their services are in high demand and without government funding are completely reliant on public. Each Smart Pup costs about $40,000 to train. ‘Every bit of community support makes the job of families like mine that little bit easier, and brightens the future of young people living with these disabilities.’ The gala dinner will be hosted by former Miss Universe Australia Kimberly Busteed. Summer Set to Sizzle

An update from the Hills Organic Garden With mild temperatures and intermittent rain over the past few months, the garden has been growing extremely well.

As a result, we have been enjoying the fruits of our harvest with each Sunday offering the opportunity to take home an abundance of produce. However, the months ahead are going to get quite warm, and with little rain predicted, over the summer there will be very little growth. Summer is a time of rest for the garden but there is still plenty of work for our members to do. As our plants stop producing, they will die back and go to seed. After the seeds are collected, they will then be chopped up and placed in the compost bays to break down. By next Autumn, we should have some rich compost for our gardens. The Hills Organic Garden is a great place for green thumbs and lovers or organic vegetables to come and enjoy the company of like-minded people as well as being able to grow, harvest and eat healthy vegetables. Our garden is a community venture where volunteers work together to grow a chemical-free harvest which they can all share. We are a friendly group of garden enthusiasts, so why not come along on a Sunday afternoon between 3-5pm and have a chat. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors. Visit hog. org.au, search “The Hills Organic Garden” on Facebook or phone 041 585 6532 for information.

We look forward to meeting you.

FERNY GROVE GARDEN CLUB: The November meeting of the Ferny Grove Garden Club will be on Friday, 24th November, at 1 pm. The club meets in St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. This will be their Christmas break-up and annual award presentations. The group are looking forward to an afternoon of festivities and friendship. For more information please call 07 3851 0568.

A Year of Blooms and Appreciation in 2023

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club This month, join us on a stroll through our year of vibrant Club activities filled with community engagement and moments of heartfelt appreciation. The Club was delighted to participate in The Hills Chamber of Commerce Twilight Years Expo in May. Our stall attracted seasoned gardeners and beginners alike, as we took the opportunity to promote the benefits of horticultural therapy for seniors. With the retirement of the Club’s highlyesteemed President, Pat Killoran, a special luncheon was held in her honour following the June meeting. This splendid event expressed the deep respect and gratitude our members hold for Pat and her remarkable commitment to the Club over many decades. Club member, Doreen Ismay (left), and President, Trish In July, the Enoggera Parkinson, enjoying the Historical Society Inc. held an Open Day, Spring High Tea. where our Garden Club treated visitors to a picturesque display of plants, home-grown produce and preserves - all courtesy of our members. Another highlight came in September when we hosted a Spring High Tea at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. The event provided a chance for members to come together and bask in the camaraderie that the Club has long nurtured. At this heartwarming gathering, the Club had the honour of recognizing four of its senior members - Pat Killoran, Margaret Morrow, Berenice Corvi and Barbara Linnett who each received Certificates of Appreciation for their outstanding contribution and service to the Club. Throughout 2023, our Club’s dedication to gardening, education, and community spirit shone brightly. Local Kids Shine at Constellation Cup Clash

The Brisbane Entertainment Centre was abuzz with excitement on Sunday 15th October as 9,117 netball enthusiasts converged to witness a riveting netball match.

This was the second game of the Constellation Cup series between the Origin Australian Diamonds and the New Zealand Silver Ferns - and a highly anticipated match at that! However, amidst the roaring crowd, was a special group of 24 young girls from local netball club Pine Hills Netball Club. These girls were some of the participants of the Woolworths NetSetGO program that the club holds every year in Term 4. The girls, aged between 6 and 10, were not only there to enjoy the spectacular game, but to also play a pivotal role in the evenings’s proceedings. In a heartwarming gesture, the children participated in the 'Welcome to Country' ceremony and then proudly stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the netball elites during the national anthem. Twelve of these budding netballers stood with the New Zealand team, while their counterparts stood with the Australian team, symbolising unity, and the shared spirit of the sport. skills. The crowd was treated to a modified netball game followed by a playful round of 'Rob the Nest'. Back to the main event, it was the Origin Australian Diamonds who clinched victory, winning by a margin of 9 points. Their stunning performance was a testament to the dedication and hard work put into preparing for this championship. The competition now travels to New Zealand. The Diamonds are chasing their 11th Constellation Cup victory. However, it was evident that the real stars of the day were the 24 young netballers, who not only represented Pine Hills Netball Club with pride but also displayed immense talent and passion for the game. Their participation and enthusiasm will undoubtedly inspire many more youngsters to take up the sport and dream big. Registrations for the Pine Hills Netball Club opens in early January. Everton News from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER Crime Forum

Recently I was joined by the Leader of the Opposition Mr David Crisafulli, Shadow Assistant Minister for Justice Mrs Laura Gerber, LNP Candidate for Ferny Grove Mr Nelson Savanh and several constituents who have been impacted by youth crime. We listened to harrowing stories of car theft and home invasions that are disturbingly increasing, rather than diminishing. The Labor Government watered down youth crime laws in 2015 which has caused the Youth Crime Crisis. There are now 202 less police on the beat. Weaker laws + less cops = higher crime The LNP has solutions on the table including creating consequences for actions, unshackling the judiciary by removing “detention as a last resort” and delivering gold standard early intervention.
