A Sustainable Shopping Extravaganza

The Garage Sale Trail is back this year, offering a guilt-free shopping spree that's both budget-friendly and eco-conscious.

Amidst rising living costs, the Garage Sale Trail offers a fantastic opportunity to discover affordable goods and earn some extra cash. By selling items you no longer need, you can significantly reduce the amount of waste destined for landfills, making a positive impact on the environment. Mark your calendars for November 11-12 and 18-19, as these two weekends promise a plethora of sustainable shopping options. You can also stay updated by following their Facebook page for the latest updates and information. The initiative encourages households, streets, schools, and community groups throughout Australia to host garage sales, fostering a sense of community and neighborly connections while bargain-hunting. In the run-up to the trail weekends, free online masterclasses will be available, offering insights from stylish Australians on how to style, mend, and shop for preloved items. This not only reduces waste but also helps you break free from fast fashion and save money. Currently, 36 sales have been registered, potentially diverting a significant number of preloved household items from ending up as waste. Fast fashion, a major contributor to landfill waste, has seen 17% of the trail's items consisting of clothing and fashion accessories. To host your own sale or find a map to navigate the Garage Sale Trail, visit www.garagesaletrail.com.au. Join in on the eco-conscious shopping experience and make a positive impact on the planet and your budget.

19 Shades of Grey...hounds

Most animal lovers will agree that one dog just isn’t enough, but for Mike and Kathy McGuill, two wasn’t enough, either … or even three.

In fact, the McGuills have fostered a total of 19 greyhounds with the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) Queensland, and now they’re ready for lucky number 20! Mike and Kathy have retirement all figured out in Ferny Hills, southeast Queensland, spending their days surrounded by adorable foster greyhounds in between their global travels. Kathy said she and her husband began fostering in 2016 to suit their travelling lifestyle. ‘We decided to foster because it meant we were never tied to the dog, and when they found their new home, we’d go on holidays,’ she said. ‘Every dog developed at a different pace, some took six weeks to adjust to home life, and others took longer, like one who took six months.’ It was only a matter of time before they met a foster they couldn’t let go. The McGuills adopted their sixteenth foster dog, Napolean, after he stole their hearts. ‘They’re all such incredible, laid back and gorgeous creatures, every single one of them makes you melt,’ Kathy said. ‘We fostered three more after adopting Napolean because he calms them down and makes them feel at home.’ Kathy said it is rewarding and heart-warming to watch her foster greyhounds’ personalities transform as they learn new skills and gained confidence. ‘They often don’t understand things like stairs, the sound of

Mike and Kathy with some of the Greyhounds they have adopted over the years traffic, so it’s a big scary world out there and it’s important to be gentle and patient,’ she said. ‘When it comes to the end and they go to a forever home, the GAP staff send through adoption updates and to just know they found a good home is really the best feeling. They’re simply the best creatures and we’re very much looking forward to seeing who we get next.’ For more information about the Greyhound Adoption Program, visit https://gapqld.com.au/

Give the Gift of Goodness

Christmas is a time for giving, and this year, there is a special way to make your gift count even more.

Introducing Secret Santa Ecards that allow you to donate a box of produce to feed a family in need this holiday season. In a world where the cost of living has pushed many individuals and families towards seeking assistance from charities for food, there is a growing need to support those who are less fortunate. Over 70% of people accessing food relief services this year had never done so before, highlighting the pressing issue of food insecurity in our communities. Enter The Mini Farm Project – an organisation dedicated to ‘Building Farms to Feed Aussies in Need.’ With two active farms in Samford and Loganlea State High School, they have ambitious plans to establish more farms in the South East Queensland area. The goal? To provide fresh and sustainable food sources for those who require it most for free each week. To achieve this mission, The Mini Farm Project has introduced an innovative solution: an online Secret Santa Ecard. Instead of the traditional gift-giving approach of buying small trinkets that may ultimately go to waste, you now have the opportunity to make a lasting impact by donating a box of fresh produce to help feed a family in need this Christmas. The Secret Santa Ecard is not only a heartfelt gesture but also an environmentally friendly one. For those who care about our planet, it's worth noting that the Ecard has a near-zero carbon footprint. Additionally, your intended recipient receives a heartwarming animated Ecard in their email, making the experience all the more special. So, why not change the way you give this holiday season? If you're participating in a Secret Santa exchange, The Mini Farm Project's Secret Santa Ecard offers a unique opportunity to warm hearts and truly make a difference. Scan the QR code to order you Ecard today.

An update from the Brisbane North Cake Decorators

The next meeting of the Brisbane North Cake Decorators will be on Saturday 18th of November.

This is their final meeting for the year and a good excuse for a Christmas Party after decorating the cupcakes for the local Meals on Wheels clients. These will then be delivered in early December. The team are hoping to reach a target of 300 cupcakes. Members are asked to bring a plate to share after the work is done. The club had a display set up at the Arana Hills Library during October. If you are visited the library during this time, we hope you had the chance to stop and have a look at the creations that were in the large display area near the entrance. Brisbane North Cake Decorators hold their meetings at the Arana Hills Community Centre, 291 Dawson Parade, Arana Hills at 1pm. Their aim is to encourage the love of cake decorating in all its aspects; we love to share our knowledge with everyone. The club loves to see new members and can be contacted on the Facebook page, Brisbane North Cake Decorators Association QCDA or via email brisbanenorthcakedecorators@gmail. com Page 12 - November 2023, The Everton Echo

Local Kids Shine at Constellation Cup Clash

The Brisbane Entertainment Centre was abuzz with excitement on Sunday 15th October as 9,117 netball enthusiasts converged to witness a riveting netball match.

This was the second game of the Constellation Cup series between the Origin Australian Diamonds and the New Zealand Silver Ferns - and a highly anticipated match at that! However, amidst the roaring crowd, was a special group of 24 young girls from local netball club Pine Hills Netball Club. These girls were some of the participants of the Woolworths NetSetGO program that the club holds every year in Term 4. The girls, aged between 6 and 10, were not only there to enjoy the spectacular game, but to also play a pivotal role in the evenings’s proceedings. In a heartwarming gesture, the children participated in the 'Welcome to Country' ceremony and then proudly stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the netball elites during the national anthem. Twelve of these budding netballers stood with the New Zealand team, while their counterparts stood with the Australian team, symbolising unity, and the shared spirit of the sport. Young netballers proudly But the excitement didn't end stood shoulder-to-shoulder there. skills. The crowd was treated to a modified netball game followed by a playful round of 'Rob the Nest'. Back to the main event, it was the Origin Australian Diamonds who clinched victory, winning by a margin of 9 points. Their stunning performance was a testament to the dedication and hard work put into preparing for this championship. The competition now travels to New Zealand. The Diamonds are chasing their 11th Constellation Cup victory. However, it was evident that the real stars of the day were the 24 young netballers, who not only represented Pine Hills Netball Club with pride but also displayed immense talent and passion for the game. Their participation and enthusiasm will undoubtedly inspire many more youngsters to take up the sport and dream big. Registrations for the Pine Hills Netball Club opens in early January. The Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) is calling on secondary and tertiary students in Queensland to apply for a range of bursaries for the year 2024. These bursaries, which range in value from $500 to $2,500, are aimed at providing financial support to students pursuing their educational aspirations. The QCWA's annual bursary campaign, according to QCWA State President Sheila Campbell, is a highlight for the association as it allows them to support the Queensland community. This support is made possible through the generous donations received from benefactors who have been backing these bursaries for several years. ’Education is a cornerstone of the QCWA, so we offer a number of bursaries every year to assist Queensland students with the cost of their studies,’ said Sheila Campbell. These bursaries can make a significant difference, particularly for self-funded tertiary students who often need to balance work with their academic commitments. Some of the bursaries on offer include: Ruth Fairfax Memorial Bursary for rural studies (2 x $2,500) Audrey J Hoskin Music Bursary for vocal or instrumental studies (1 x $1,000) Greater Brisbane Daphne Dowdle Midwifery Bursary (1 x $1,000) Border Division for a mature age student (1 x $1000) Condamine Valley/Warwick Branch Bursary (3 x $1500) Eumundi Branch Queensland Youth Orchestra Bursary for studying music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (2 x $600) Mallalieu Home Foundation Trust Scholarship for accommodation for music study (4 x $500). She is a long time member of the club and is still as competitive as ever, showing no mercy to anybody. Well done Beryl. The other visitor was Betty Butterworth’s grandson, Jacob. He is touring the world from his 101 year old Beryl Irwin home in Devon, England. It showing she still has what didn't take him long before he it takes when bowling started to become competitive as well, and he enjoyed himself amongst grandma's friends. Bocce Enthusiasts Compete in Inaugural Cup

An update from the Newmarket Club by Mario De Marco

Members of the Newmarket Bocce Club had a terrific time at the competition

Sometimes I think, what do people really think about bocce? Maybe just bowling a few bocce balls down a bocce court: big deal that’s not hard.

If you have only played bocce once or twice you would know that it is not an easy task to get it close to the pallino or kitty, or you can call it a jack. You need concentration. You need to judge distance. You need to read the court or playing area. You need to formulate a strategy to get the best outcome. Remember, your aim is to have a bit of fun if you're playing socially but you also need that competitive edge so you can play a good game. I have posted heaps of competitions and you may think they are all the same. Well not really. You see you have different opponents. You have different team makeups. Each end has a different strategy you must recognize to get the best result. Yes we do play social and those games are great and fun, but there will be occasions where you need to step up. So, that brings me to Tuesday night the 22nd August, where we had the inaugural cup: Lancia Car Club verses Fiat Car Club. Fun night. Some members have played before and it was interesting to see their game plan. It was social but they were playing for a cup. This was a competition where it didn’t matter if you won or lost: just have a great time. But let me say there were some members who were really trying hard. There were about 24 members between both clubs. Three games and at the end of the second game there was only 3 points difference. However Lancia won by 9 points. Pizza for dinner. It was a great night enjoyed by all. There were five Newmarket club members to adjudicate and control the game. They also had a great time. If you want to know anything about bocce, please don’t hesitate to contact Mario 0403 257 325 or Bill 0431 458 481 The Everton Echo, November 2023 - Page 21

Gala Fundraiser to Support Youth with Disabilities and Mental Health

A Queensland mum determined to make a difference in the lives of young people with hidden disabilities and mental illness is calling for community support ahead of a gala fundraising event in Brisbane.

The gala dinner at the Queensland Cricketers Club on November 24 will raise funds for not-for-profits Smart Pups and headspace national Youth Mental Health Foundation. Smart Pups provides assistance dogs to children with special needs. This unique form of early intervention therapy has a profound effect on the day-to-day lives of children and their families, improving physical health and safety, independence, confidence, self-esteem, social interaction, life experience, happiness and wellbeing. headspace delivers early intervention mental health support to young people aged from 12 to 25 years. The event is the brainchild of Brisbane woman Shannon Lockyer, whose 8-year-old son Eli lives with Autism, ADHD and Anxiety. ‘Parenting an eight-year-old is already tough, but when you add in his special needs, every day is different and challenging for our family,’ Shannon says. ‘Unfortunately, their services are in high demand and without government funding are completely reliant on public. Each Smart Pup costs about $40,000 to train. ‘Every bit of community support makes the job of families like mine that little bit easier, and brightens the future of young people living with these disabilities.’ The gala dinner will be hosted by former Miss Universe Australia Kimberly Busteed. Prizes on the night include gifts

from Fleet Crew, JW Marriot, Verve Portraits, Amarco-Iluka, Michelle Sparks Art, MP Studio, Qt’s Hair and Beauty + more. Dogs from the Smart Pups program will be available for cuddles on the night! Ferny Nourish Bowl Served with a Side of Success

A tuckshop favourite at Ferny Grove State High School is fast becoming one of Queensland’s most famed healthy dishes.

Looking to expand the menu at Ferny Grove State High School Eats at the Grove Canteen, the lovely ladies behind the counter mashed new healthy trends together to craft the Ferny Nourish Bowl. While food trends may come and go, appreciation for dishes that not only please the palate but nourish the body remain timeless. The Ferny Nourish Bowl is one such delicious innovation, carefully prepared to offer a vibrant, healthy meal that doesn’t compromise on flavour. This September, The Ferny Nourish Bowl was announced on 7 News’ programme Sunrise to be one of six finalists in the Queensland Association of School Tuckshop’s annual recipe of the year competition. The Grove Canteen and X Block Senior Cafe manager and convenor at Ferny Grove, Megan Towner, admits that the nourish bowl was originally targeted toward teachers, but became a student favourite—especially for senior girls. Having worked at the Grove Canteen for a whole decade now, Ms Towner was not shocked by this; she believes student’s palettes have evolved to encompass healthier, greener food choices. The school’s canteen sells about 400 main meals, as well as snacks and daily breakfast items—all with health-wise offers. It seems the modern push toward sustainable, nourishing meals is only gaining more and more momentum.

Summer Set to Sizzle

An update from the Hills Organic Garden With mild temperatures and intermittent rain over the past few months, the garden has been growing extremely well.

As a result, we have been enjoying the fruits of our harvest with each Sunday offering the opportunity to take home an abundance of produce. However, the months ahead are going to get quite warm, and with little rain predicted, over the summer there will be very little growth. Summer is a time of rest for the garden but there is still plenty of work for our members to do. As our plants stop producing, they will die back and go to seed. After the seeds are collected, they will then be chopped up and placed in the compost bays to break down. By next Autumn, we should have some rich compost for our gardens. The Hills Organic Garden is a great place for green thumbs and lovers or organic vegetables to come and enjoy the company of like-minded people as well as being able to grow, harvest and eat healthy vegetables. Our garden is a community venture where volunteers work together to grow a chemical-free harvest which they can all share. We are a friendly group of garden enthusiasts, so why not come along on a Sunday afternoon between 3-5pm and have a chat. You will find us at 416 Bunya Road, Bunya next to the Off Leash Dog Park. Membership Fees per year are $20 for adults, $30 for family and $10 for Juniors. Visit hog. org.au, search “The Hills Organic Garden” on Facebook or phone 041 585 6532 for information.

We look forward to meeting you.

FERNY GROVE GARDEN CLUB: The November meeting of the Ferny Grove Garden Club will be on Friday, 24th November, at 1 pm. The club meets in St Matthew’s Church Hall, Church Road, Mitchelton. This will be their Christmas break-up and annual award presentations. The group are looking forward to an afternoon of festivities and friendship. For more information please call 07 3851 0568.

A Year of Blooms and Appreciation in 2023

An update from the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club This month, join us on a stroll through our year of vibrant Club activities filled with community engagement and moments of heartfelt appreciation. The Club was delighted to participate in The Hills Chamber of Commerce Twilight Years Expo in May. Our stall attracted seasoned gardeners and beginners alike, as we took the opportunity to promote the benefits of horticultural therapy for seniors. With the retirement of the Club’s highlyesteemed President, Pat Killoran, a special luncheon was held in her honour following the June meeting. This splendid event expressed the deep respect and gratitude our members hold for Pat and her remarkable commitment to the Club over many decades. Club member, Doreen Ismay (left), and President, Trish In July, the Enoggera Parkinson, enjoying the Historical Society Inc. held an Open Day, Spring High Tea. where our Garden Club treated visitors to a picturesque display of plants, home-grown produce and preserves - all courtesy of our members. Another highlight came in September when we hosted a Spring High Tea at the Enoggera Memorial Hall. The event provided a chance for members to come together and bask in the camaraderie that the Club has long nurtured. At this heartwarming gathering, the Club had the honour of recognizing four of its senior members - Pat Killoran, Margaret Morrow, Berenice Corvi and Barbara Linnett who each received Certificates of Appreciation for their outstanding contribution and service to the Club. Throughout 2023, our Club’s dedication to gardening, education, and community spirit shone brightly. Thank you for accompanying us on our look back at the activities that so engaged and inspired our members. Next meeting: Thursday 2 November at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Venue: The Enoggera Memorial Hall (entrance via Trundle St). Entry is $3.00 including morning tea. Visitors are most welcome. Email us at mitcheltongc@gmail.com or find us on Facebook @mitcheltongardenclub. Stafford Gardening Club Meeting: The next meeting of the Stafford Garden Club is on Thursday, 16th November at the OES Hall cnr Kitchener Rd and Bohland St Kedron. The club meets at 9.30am for Morning Tea, to buy from the plant stall and to admire the exhibits on the bench. Visitors and new members are welcome. Everton News from your State Member for Everton TIM MANDER Crime Forum

Recently I was joined by the Leader of the Opposition Mr David Crisafulli, Shadow Assistant Minister for Justice Mrs Laura Gerber, LNP Candidate for Ferny Grove Mr Nelson Savanh and several constituents who have been impacted by youth crime. We listened to harrowing stories of car theft and home invasions that are disturbingly increasing, rather than diminishing. The Labor Government watered down youth crime laws in 2015 which has caused the Youth Crime Crisis. There are now 202 less police on the beat. Weaker laws + less cops = higher crime The LNP has solutions on the table including creating consequences for actions, unshackling the judiciary by removing “detention as a last resort” and delivering gold standard early intervention.

THE FERNY REPORT

by Mark Furner M.P. State Member for Ferny Grove State of the State In October the Premier gave the State of the State address to report on the current position of Queensland, its challenges, and our plan to face those challenges head on. It provided an important snapshot of where we are at as a state. I have provided a summary of the address below. Queensland’s financial strength has never been greater. We are using our sound economic position, with a balanced budget and a pipeline of investments, to attract more business dollars and create more jobs in our great state. Today, there are 276,600 more jobs in Queensland than in March 2020. Taxes in Queensland are $551 lower per-person than other states. Over the year to June, business investment was up 5.6%, and Queensland’s exports are now over a whopping $125 billion annually. Our strong budget position, through our decision to retain our electricity assets and through our decision to make coal companies pay their fair share, has meant we can provide cost of living support to every Queensland household. We have provided all households a of minimum $550 off power bills for the 2023/24 financial, with pensioners and seniors receiving $1,072. So far, we have invested over $96 billion in Queensland infrastructure – in schools, hospitals, transportation, utilities, housing, and community & sporting facilities. In the next four years we will add a further budgeted $89 billion, which will

It was a tight finish to this year‘s Keperra Bowl Championship at Keperra Country Golf Club, with the Men’s Tournament being decided on the last hole! Congratulations to this year’s winners Billy Dowling and Justice Bosio – with Club President Rodney Rhodes. build the infrastructure we need in Queensland to meet the demands of our growing state. This investment is already transforming our energy grid and is already creating the clean energy jobs of the future which we will need for the emerging economy. Today, more than 26% of our energy in Queensland is produced by large-scale renewables. When we came to office in 2015, that number was less than 1%. With more projects coming online every month, at this rate Queensland will hit 70% renewables by the 2032 Brisbane Olympics – and every new renewable project which comes online will keep downward pressure on energy prices. There is more. Much more. More for the regions, more for the South-East, more for the top end, more locally. By the time you read the print copy of this report the multi-level carpark at the Ferny Grove Railway Station will be open to the public and work will be underway on projects in four of our local schools. So much is happening in our great state, but there is still much more to do, and I am excited to be part of a state and a government which is preparing and building not only for today, but for the decades to come. Free Kindy is starting in 2024 Our $645 million investment is making kindy free for all Queensland families from 2024. Free kindergarten is set to save families up to $4,600 per year, putting money back in the pockets of mums, dads, and carers, where it’s needed. E-Scooter Safety We are strengthening the laws for personalised mobility devices and e-scooters to make it safer for pedestrians, riders, and drivers. This includes making it an offence to ride recklessly and without due care of a shared footpath and making sure riders remain at the scene after an accident that causes damage or harm to someone’s property or others and to provide their particulars to anyone who is involved in the accident.

DELIVERING EVEN MORE FOR ENOGGERA WARD An update from Cr Andrew Wines, Enoggera Ward

Explore our interactive map My focus has always been making Council serve our community. Over the years I have demonstrated my commitment to improving our: transport system; community facilities; parklands; and drainage and flood mitigation, while keeping the city’s finances in order. Scan the QR code or visit andrewwines.com to explore our interactive map and learn more about the local projects I've delivered for our community.

New lights for Brisbane Softball Association

Council, I was delighted to join BSA to turn on their new lights at Downey Park in October. This has been a complex and labour-intensive job, requiring a big commitment from both BSA and Council. Remediation works at Downey Park to date include a new entrance and footpath from the large carpark with a new retaining wall behind 3rd base of diamond 1, a new fence on diamond 2, new flooring and nets for the batting cage, and an upgrade to diamond 2. Upcoming works will include a new home run fence due for installation in the coming weeks, and grandstand seating is progressing. Stage 2 works will commence in January.

Celebrating our local schools and sports clubs

Cr Wines and BSA committee turning on new playing lights at Downey Park for the first time I am proud to support Brisbane Softball Association, and thanks to significant funding and project support from Cr Wines supporting the Oakleigh State School Country Fair October kicks off celebration and graduation season in our community, and it has been wonderful to celebrate milestones with locals. Last month I was proud to sponsor Oakleigh State School’s Country Fair, and while it’s a great event every year, 2023 was particularly fantastic. West Arana Hills Rugby League Football Club’s trophy day was hosted at the Grovely State School Hall this year, and it was a pleasure to present trophies to the Champion Teams. It was also wonderful to visit the annual Banks Street Kindy art show last month. Banks Street Kindy has an amazing arts program, and the annual exhibition is always a highlight in our local community.
