Locals raising funds through World’s Greatest Shave - Lets Find a Cure

L-R: Raeleen Ford, Ivan Barron and Melinda Barron

Local residents Melinda Barron, husband Ivan Barron and Raeleen Ford are going bald for a cause and they need your help.

They felt extremely blessed to have seven healthy children between them, However, their hearts ached because they can only imagine what other families must endure and this is what prompted them to do the challenge of World’s Greatest Shave to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Their first event was held at George Willmore Park, Ferny Hills on the 11th February. They had a great turnout with 40 people attending and raised $750 through an hour’s fitness training session held for attendees. They have a goal of raising $5,000 and are now only $2,000 off reaching it. The Shave will take place on Friday 17th March at The Arana Leagues Club (in the deck area) at 6pm. They are inviting everyone to come along and watch and donate. Staff at Arana Leagues Club are also getting on board to join in on the night to shave or colour their hair. Head on down to the Arana Leagues Club for a great night out in aid of a fantastic cause or dontate online https:// secure.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/ registrant/TeamFundraisingPage. aspx?teamID=99876&langPref=enCA

Phoenix soar as new netball courts open in Ferny Grove

The Phoenix Netball Club officially opened a brand new $425,000 netball complex in Ferny Grove on Sunday, February 26, providing a much needed female sporting facility for the surrounding community. Construction of the courts started in October last year following two years of hard work by the club in sourcing support through government grants, community groups, local businesses and club fundraising. The netball complex, comprising of three netball courts is located at Ferny Grove Sports Reserve on Tramway St and complements the existing football and cricket grounds, providing a facility for female sport. The new courts will be home base for the Phoenix Netball Club for training and development, as well as available for hire by the local community. The Club also plans to run a Phoenix 5 competition, with modified netball rules for people of all ages who are interested in playing netball for a bit of fun and fitness. Rotary Club of Samford Valley Presents ‘The Long Drive’ – Hyena or Leopard?

‘What’s that scratching at our door? Is it the hyena from last night or is it a leopard?’. In the morning, there are just lion tracks around the truck. It was all part of the adventure as Miles and Marina travelled through Africa last year as part of their, ‘long drive’ from Singapore to Cape Town. Their journey started in 2013 heading north to Siberia, then north west to Nordkapp, the most northern point in Europe. Now over 100,000 km later and the equivalent of two and a half times around the equator they have driven through over forty countries. From camping with Mongolian nomads, sharing the night with predators in Botswana, to witnessing the summer solstice while overlooking the Arctic Ocean, they have had some amazing experiences. Both Miles and Marina have travelled extensively, both having worked with the United Nations in several postconflict countries including Afghanistan, where they narrowly escaped serious injury during an attack on their guest house by the Taliban. All of this, Miles says, gives you another perspective on life. ‘We realize how lucky we are to live in a country like Australia, where the rule of law is respected and upheld for everyone; but at the same time, we also live in a world where four to five million children die each year through easily preventable diseases.’ On the 31st of March 2017, the Rotary Club of Samford Valley will present a talk by Miles about ‘The Long Drive’. For more information, please phone 0407 562 480.

All proceeds from this presentation will go to support a Water Underground Project which provides underground water and sanitation to villages in Mozambique. If you would like to join us at one of our meetings, please contact Secretary Geoff Moore at: samfordvalleyrc@gmail. com.

Protect yourself from leaks

Could this be the bottom of the slide?

Water leaks can occur in new or old homes, outside or inside, above or under ground. Unfortunately, many leaks go undetected for long periods of time because the source of the leak is not visible.

Craig from Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers is always aiming to provide information about the finance and property market that you will not find in mainstream media.

We always recommend you read your water meter regularly to keep track of your water consumption as property owners are responsible for any leak that occurs in the infrastructure on their property up to the water meter. This includes responsibility for the cost of water registered on your water meter, whether this water is used or lost due to a leak. Urban utilities now have two products to help further protect you from the impacts of concealed leaks on your property.

As you can see below, all three rate categories have experienced an extraordinary drop since 2010. However, in recent times all three categories have lifted. Could this be the bottom of the slide? Given most banks have been talking about margin pressure, there may be more hikes in store, especially in the investment loan category.

One is a small device installed on a property’s plumbing infrastructure and temporarily cuts off the water supply if it detects a leak, burst pipe or even a tap left running. The other is an annual insurance policy that provides coverage towards the cost of water usage charges caused by a concealed leak. For more information visit www.urbanutilities.com.au/leaks ______________________

New smoke alarm legislation New laws regarding the installation of photoelectric smoke alarms in all Queensland homes came into effect on 1 January 2017. Photoelectric smoke alarms detect visible particles of combustion. They respond quicker to smouldering fires and the dense smoke given off by foam filled furnishings or overheated PVC wiring.

Whilst the past does not determine the future, this chart does help us to put our current rate environment into perspective. It is important that you are proactive with your mortgage. If you would like to know more contact Craig on 0439 895 885 or cmole@smartline.com.au

Harmony Day—21 March

Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity—a day of cultural respect for everyone who call Australia home. Held every year on 21st of March. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’. The Day aims to engage people to participate in their community, respect cultural and religious diversity and foster sense of belonging for everyone. Australians have chosen to wear orange to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. http://www.harmony.gov.au/

A Snapshot of Ferny Grove Ferny Grove is a residential suburb 11km north west of Brisbane. The size of Ferny Grove is approximately 4km². It has 8 parks covering nearly 12% of the total area. There are three schools, two child care centres and a shopping centre located on McGinn Road. In the 2011 census (still waiting for 2016 results) Ferny Grove recorded a population of 5,609 people. Before the World War II Ferny Grove was mainly known for its pleasant picnic grounds along the banks of Kedron Brook and large areas of forest and fern filled valleys one of which gives the suburb its name. Before large scale residential development, Ferny Grove was primarily industrial, containing a clay pit and tile factory operating south of the railway station. When this factory closed operations in the 1960’s Ferny Grove was redeveloped for housing.

Arana Netball Ready for the Start of Fixtures

With both sign-on at the end of January and the subsequent selection trials now behind us, Arana Netball Club teams have been able to start training properly in team groups since the last week in February. Thanks and acknowledgement are due to all who made the busy start of the season proceed so smoothly – this includes the players themselves and parents, as well as selectors and Committee members. Happily, all teams have coaches appointed, and it is hoped that each team will also have a manager. This year’s Downey Park fixtures commence on Saturday, 25th March, so everything needs to be in place by then, as well as all uniform items procured. Uniform Convenor is Kym Streeter (0407 038 913.) Arana is fielding fourteen teams this year, ranging from four non-competitives (aged 8-10 years) up to three Opens. While some teams are full, at the time of going to press there are vacancies to make team numbers up to nine, in both the younger age groups (8 to 10 years), and the older (from 15 years upwards.) Anyone with queries about still playing netball this year needs to contact the President, Lorraine, on 3882 2900 or 0432 216 407 immediately. As Arana Netball Club celebrates forty years in 2017, other social activities planned during the year include a movie night and a gala dinner. For further information about Arana Netball see the web site www.arananetballclub.com.au and follow the Club’s Facebook page. The Club can also be contacted at arananetballclub@gmail.com.

Mitchelton Garden Club On Thursday, 6th April, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall, corner of Wardell and Trundle Streets. Enoggera.

A valuable member of the club, Ann Barton is the speaker, and she will be talking about Gardening Hints. Through her wealth of knowledge and expertise, she has a lot to share with those present and by following her hints, gardening expenses could be minimised, water usage reduced, and the life of household packaging extended instead of it going in the bin. The season of Autumn has just begun, a time to revitalize vegetable gardens for winter crops. Avoid planting the same thing in the same spot, e.g. root vegetables such as beetroot, carrots, parsnips, turnips etc. should be planted where a leafy vegetable has been grown, and vice versa. If you prefer to raise your own seedlings for Spring flowers, don’t delay, as the plants should be in the garden by the end of April, and remember to water the plants in with a Seasol mixture. By placing the seedling punnets in clear plastic cake containers with lids, you’ll create a mini hot house atmosphere which will retain moisture, thus encouraging germination and growth. Have you considered planting flowers, herbs and vegetables in the same garden bed? It makes an interesting combination and also can confuse garden pests. March is the month to plant strawberry runners into a rich well-drained soil. Strawberries like an open sunny position. Usually the parent plant is discarded. However it may be replanted if you don’t mind the smaller fruit it will produce. This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month, commencing with morning tea at 9.45 a.m. Visitors and new members are most welcome. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. For more information, please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

Counsellor’s Column with Robin Botic

Robin Botic

Dear Robin, It feels like I have to deal with and look after our three girls all on my own. To get my husband to really pay attention to them requires a gargantuan effort. And whenever I mention it to him, he becomes extremely defensive. The girls crave his attention, but he just does not see this. Their ages range from seven to three. I need his support at night and on the weekends to look after them. He leaves very early for work in the morning, so I deal with the morning rush-hour. But that time from 6.30 to 8 at night when we all need him, he makes himself very unavailable by going on a compulsive cleaning frenzy of the kitchen, kids’ toys, and general mess etc. He’s a very tidy and organised person and it irritates the hell out of him if things aren’t in their right place before we go to bed. I used to feel like he was having a go at my house-keeping, and feeling like somehow I wasn‘t doing my job. But I realised sensibly enough that I could not do everything, so I no longer feel upset in myself or feel like I’m being criticised when he behaves like this. However, he gets upset when I ask for help with the girls because that’s where I really need it. And he says he is being supportive because he’s doing all this tidying up for me. My reply is that what we, and particularly he, has, is limited time with the girls, and that they need his presence, not their toys put away. I feel like I’ve done a lot of work on myself, but I don’t seem to be able to get him to change. Any ideas? Sue. Dear Sue, I have to agree with you on this one. It is terribly important that both parents spend quality time with their children. Fathers who work long hours are particularly prone to miss out, and when this happens, it sets up the behavioural expectation and pattern that men, as represented by the father ideal they see, are not emotionally available. While these fathers may provide lots of material comfort, the emotional component is distant or lacking. This is something that is often commented on by my adult clients. ‘My father was not there. He was too busy working or doing stuff.’ Without doubt, each person would have liked to have had more time and a deeper and more meaningful relationship with their father. Not only do we feel we are missing out as kids, but also it does not provide good modelling for our adult partner relationships. Distance and unavailability is not a good building-block for successful intimate relationships.

Of course, being a good provider is an important aspect of a male’s positive sense of self, but there has to be a balance. There are many parental behaviours, but a very important one which is applicable in your case, and that gives quality to quality time, is open-hearted listening. By this I mean listening to understand what is really going on for your child. What, if anything, is bothering them? Don’t come in with a judgment or an immediate fix-it remedy so you feel you have done your duty and can move on to what you want to do. Give them the time and patience to let them explore their situation and come up with their own solution. With your support and guidance, this is a great way to build confidence and self-esteem. Children also learn to trust this space with you as a place they can come to when they need to. And by God, you might well need this when they reach their teen years. Bed-time, when the day’s rush is over, is both a safe yet vulnerable time when they, if allowed the space, are more likely to open up. Reading stories, and chats about what’s happened in each of our days, opens up the above possibilities. It can and should be a really special time for fathers, not just for mothers. Encourage your husband with the above ideas in mind and with gentle suggestions that this would be more beneficial to the development growth of your children, than fulfilling the Mr Clean need, which is about his needs rather than his children’s. (The probability is that his behaviour re cleanliness is something again modelled from his own family or origin.) The time you save in his sharing his time with your children is a time you could use to offer to help him tidy things up later. Then you can both relax together. Another important aspect of parenting is being there for children, engaging - and I really do mean engaging with them, in their play. Showing enjoyment and pride and praise in any of their scholastic, sporting or extra-curricular activities, makes such a difference to how they feel about themselves, and how comfortable they feel with you. Praise with no conditions. By that I mean no buts - ‘you could or should have’. That method of instruction - and you may think youre being helpful - is actually a great teacher of the debilitating belief that many people have, that no matter what I do, its never good enough. Good coaching in any form does not dismiss prior effort. Emphasise that what you are asking is for the longterm benefit of the children. It’s not about who’s doing what most or best between you two. It’s about working together without blame or judgment for what works best to support the family effort. Make sure that you too are also appreciative of his efforts re cleaning et cetera, so his contribution to date is not negated, or he is made to feel wrong. Needing to be right, and you perhaps making him feel wrong, could be part of his resistance to wanting to change. When he feels the emotional benefits in himself and in the response from your daughters, that in itself is the reward that keeps us doing more of the same. Subtle and supportive recognition from you of this is very important. Robin

Dickson News

from your Federal Member for Dickson PETER DUTTON

We’re well and truly into another busy year.

It’s good to start the year with news that more than 4500 homes and businesses in parts of Arana Hills and Ferny Grove can now connect to the nbn with the service expected to be available to another 3000 in parts of Ferny Hills from next month. Residents need to note a switch over is not automatic; you need to contact your retail telecom service provider if you wish to connect via the nbn. The Turnbull Coalition Government has worked hard to ensure the nbn rollout was accelerated and I’ll continue to fight to have all suburbs in Dickson prioritised. With children settled back into their school routine after the long summer break, let me congratulate all those youngsters and teens who have been inducted into leadership positions at their school for 2017. Coinciding with the new school year the Government has launched a new website that enables parents to help primary school children with their learning and homework. The website is filled with hundreds of ideas, activities, games and videos to assist parents get involved with their child’s learning. You can tap into this resource here - www.learningpotential.edu.au

Federal Government Update

2017 will be a year for our Coalition Government to implement our agenda to boost the economy, create jobs and help families facing cost of living pressures. Business, in particular small business, drives our economy and provides the growth that generates jobs.

Page 28 - March 2017, The Hills Echo

Our communities in the Dickson electorate rely on small businesses. Our Enterprise Tax Plan is an investment in our future. Lower company tax rates flow on to workers and consumers. Australia’s company tax rates are high by world standards and if we are to attract the investment that is needed to create jobs in the future we must enable our companies to remain competitive. Our tax plan will do exactly that and it will start by lowering tax rates for small business. The Government has also initiated a new programme to help young people into work. From April the jobactive PaTH Programme will provide young people with skills to seek a job, internships for on the job experience and incentives of up to $10,000 for businesses to employ more young people. I urge both young people and employers to investigate the detail of jobactive at this website – www.jobactive.gov.au/path To help working families – we have outlined and will pursue the most significant reform to the early education and child care system in decades with reforms aimed at giving one million families relief from out-of-pocket child care costs and providing more children with the opportunity to benefit from early education. Electricity bills have been one of the biggest pressures on families’ budgets and the Coalition will work to ensure power costs to both homes and businesses are affordable. Unfortunately what’s driving prices up are unrealistic targets for renewable energy set by various state governments including Queensland. Anna Palaszczuk must abandon her target for 50 per cent renewable energy or the price rises of recent years will continue into the future.

Department of Immigration and Border Protection Update

The scourge of drugs and its impact on our families and communities remains every parent’s worst nightmare. As a Government we are vigorously combatting the crime gangs seeking to get illegal drugs into our country. In recent weeks the men and women of my department – the Australian Border Force – played a key role with other law enforcement agencies in seizing more than 1.4 tonnes of cocaine by intercepting a yacht off the NSW coast. This is the biggest ever seizure, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and will keep a huge amount of illegal drugs off out streets. On a more personal level, in the last week I participated in the launch of improved drug and alcohol treatment services across the Brisbane North Primary Health Network which covers all communities in the Dickson electorate. If you know someone who is dependent on alcohol or drugs such as ice and needs help to regain control over their lives they should contact – Lives Lived Well on 1300 727 957 and Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people can contact the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health on 07 3648 9500. As Minister for Immigration and Border Protection I will not tolerate foreign nationals living in Australia on visas who commit serious crimes against our citizens or community. Last year 301 offenders were stripped of their visas in Queensland including murderers, those who’ve committed violent assaults and those who’ve committed sexual offences against children. We strengthened the law in 2014 to ensure we can remove these criminals, since then, nationwide, I have cancelled the visas of more than 2000 offenders. New Australian Hearing Centre

Australian Hearing began delivering services to Australian veterans suffering hearing loss in 1947. Now, 70 years later they have more than half a million clients and 560 centres throughout Australia. I was delighted to Officially Open their new Australian Hearing office on Blackwood Street in Mitchelton recently. The Centre has more than 360 clients, and further prides itself on assisting eligible people from culturally diverse backgrounds and Indigenous Australians. It is a great addition to what is becoming a

bustling service hub. 75th Anniversary of the Fall of Singapore

I was honoured to speak at a Memorial Service for the 75th Anniversary of the Fall of Singapore last month at the Shrine of Remembrance in the City. We were joined by His Excellency the Hon Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland and Mrs Kaye de Jersey along with Senator James McGrath, Ian Walker MP, Cr Andrew Wines, and representatives from the armed services, the nurses, the widows, the prisoners of war, the Returned and Services League and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. We remembered those members of the 2/10 th Field Regiment, 8th Division Australian Imperial Force, the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Australian Air Force, Royal Australian Nurses, and Associated Services who made the greatest sacrifice for our Nation.

Phoenix Netball Court Opening

I was delighted to attend the Grand Opening of the Phoenix Netball courts at Ferny Grove in February. Phoenix Netball Club was the proud recipient of a Federal Government Stronger Communities Programme grant last year. This grant of $20,000 was used for the lighting of these new courts which will extend the time the facilities can be used. The Stronger Communities Programme supports local volunteer organisations with small infrastructure projects. These projects can include clubhouse upgrades, lighting fixtures or new sporting facilities. Grants between $5,000 and $20,000 are available on a dollar-for-dollar match basis. The new Courts are an asset to our local area and show the

Ferny Grove Station Development Make sure you have your say on the future of the Ferny Grove Transport Oriented Development (TOD). Community consultations will begin at the Ferny Grove Railway Station and other locations this month. Over the last year and a half I have been lobbying Treasury to fund extra commuter parking to the Ferny Grove Station as part of the final stage of its redevelopment. I am pleased to announce the Palaszczuk Government will be funding over 250 extra commuter car spaces as part of the TOD. This will be in addition to the hundreds of extra dedicated retail and residential parking for the precinct. The TOD plans to incorporate dining, retail and residential elements along with an 8-screen cinema complex and plans for a more integrated transport experience in Ferny Grove. The development will provide jobs for local workers, both in the construction phase and ongoing retail opportunities in the completed development. Clean Up Australia Day Sunday March 5 is Clean Up Australia Day, and I’ll be at John Scott Park from 9am to help keep Australia beautiful. If you’d like to be part of the clean-up, register at www. cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/John+Scott+Park or show up on the day with a hat and gloves. I will provide cold water, sunscreen and bags.

Cabinet appointment I was honoured to have been asked to join the Palaszczuk Government Cabinet as Minister for Local Government and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships. I have been entrusted with a greater responsibility, and in return the Ferny Grove electorate has received a strong voice at the Cabinet table. I can assure you I will not be allowing my ministerial duties to distract me from my first job – which is as your voice in Queensland Parliament.
