Global learning raises pupil achievement by developing deeper, critical thinking in pupils, enabling a greater understanding of the world around them and thus being empowered to influence their own futures and take responsibility for themselves and others. CDEC provides high quality training in all aspects of global learning, from practical activity ideas to enrich your teaching practice, to support in embedding practice and methodologies throughout the school curriculum. We can deliver whole-school INSET based on any of our courses (overleaf) or we can tailor a session to more closely meet your needs, at competitive prices.

Full Day courses

‘Pupil Power!’ 9 October 2013 ‘Global Citizenship’ starts with individuals who are empowered, who are self-aware, and who take responsibility for themselves and others. This session is for practitioners who genuinely want to enable and empower their learners. It uses dialogic learning practices to explore and enable pupil voice, and helps you to reflect on, and transform, your practice and the ethos in your school. It links the importance of participation with global learning and spiritual, moral, social and cultural learning. You will also get a range of practical ideas about how to enable your pupils to take action towards a fairer world. This workshop aims to: · explore the issue of involving young people in co-constructing global learning activities · introduce and discuss models of participation · link theory with practice · suggest practical ways of involving young people in co-constructing global learning experiences The session will be interactive and practical, utilising small group work and dialogue. 9 October, Carlisle

‘Fairtrade, Forests & Fells!’

Bring Fairtrade to life in the local landscape’

!’ 9 This October 2013 unique course is suitable for all primary schools who are interested in teaching and learning about Fairtrade, the environment and the outdoors. This fun course will provide you with activities to spark enthusiasm for caring about the environment and being able to make informed choices about local and Fairtrade products. From the ‘Fairtrade Frog game’ to giant Fairtrade footprints and ‘Fruity orienteering’, this hands on session will give you plenty of food for thought! Whether you are working towards, already have, or are simply interested in Fairtrade Schools Status and want to bring learning to life by utilizing your outdoor space, then this is the course for you! On this course participants will:   

Gain a deeper understanding of Fairtrade and how to embed this in the curriculum Take away practical ideas for use in the outdoors that enhance learning about Fairtrade Link Fairtrade and local, therefore explore interconnections with other people and places

Increased understanding of the key concepts, practices and perspectives associated with education for a just and sustainable world (global learning) 2. Increased ability to incorporate global learning in the school curriculum 3. Increased confidence and understanding of how to promote informed, active global citizenship In order to achieve the nationally recognised Level 1 GTA, teachers must attend an approved Level 1 course, complete a follow-up activity in their classrooms within 3 months, and submit documentation of, and reflection on, that activity.

‘Not Just a One Off! - Easy planning for global & multi-cultural work’ 7 November 2013 !’ 9 This October 2013 full day course will demonstrate how to embed the Global Dimension and multicultural work across the curriculum. ‘Fairtrade & Local in the Great Outdoors’ 17 September 2013 This practical course is a great way of getting ideas for teaching about local and Fairtrade using the outdoor classroom! Fun games and activities for children about Fairtrade issues, respecting the environment and exciting curiosity about the local and wider world. This course will spark enthusiasm for making relevant local and Fairtrade issues become part of the school life, both indoors and outdoors. On this course participants will:   

‘Introduction to P4C’ 14 November or 26 February 2014 This twilight introduces ‘Philosophy for Children’, a structured approach to learning through enquiry and dialogue. P4C is motivating and challenging for pupils and teachers. It is practised in around 60 countries, and research has clearly established that it improves behaviour, motivation, and learning, 9 October 2013 as well as achievement for pupils of all ages, abilities, and through any subject.
