Talk of the Town Buying Annuities and Deciphering Company Ratings hope everyone had a great summer, now that Halloween is just around the corner and fall is upon us. Before you know it, we’ll be talking about Christmas and the New Year. Yikes! Time seems to move faster and faster as we get older, doesn’t it?

James D. Stillman

Many times, clients and potential clients want to discuss annuities and the ratings of the insurance companies that issue them, so I thought I’d shed some light on the subject in this month’s article. The first thing to remember is this: if you’re purchasing an annuity, make sure you’re purchasing it for the right reasons! The primary purpose of an annuity is one thing: INCOME!

Annuities are the only investment/savings tool in the toolbox that can guarantee income for life. They are backed by the claims paying ability of the insurance company, and not the FDIC. In my opinion, that’s perfectly fine since there are virtually no instances where a Legal Reserve insurance company has not met its obligation to pay claims or income. Most Legal Reserve insurance companies are extremely well capitalized, well run, tightly regulated, and backed by individual state guarantee funds should the insurance company get into trouble. This is known as The North Carolina Life & Health Insurance Guarantee Association. The protection limit is $300,000 per individual, per company. Note: It’s NOT $300,000 per contract like some have been lead to believe. The bottom line, though, is that annuities are an extremely safe choice when done properly. Because of all the customizable options, annuities have been fiercely criticized for being too complex for the average investor to understand. While annuities are no more complex than understanding the mechanics of a mutual fund or stock options, it can be easy to become confused without some expert guidance. Let’s discuss the single most important factor, the financial strength of the annuity company. Rating agencies like A.M. Best and S&P do their best to provide grades on insurance companies. A company that’s rated “A” or “A+” is considered stronger that a “B” rated company, but the company rating may not be the most important factor. Another very important factor used to determine a company’s strength is known as a “Solvency Ratio”. All Legal Reserve insurance companies must hold $1 in reserve for every $1 on deposit. In contrast, large banks only have to keep about 3-10 cents in

reserve for every $1 on deposit. For example, a company with a solvency ratio of 105 means that for every $1 you put into an annuity, they have $1.05 in assets to back that principal promise. The higher the solvency ratio, the stronger the promise. It’s interesting to see how there’s little correlation between ratings and solvency ratios. For instance, compare Prudential’s rating of “A+” and solvency ratio of 101.57 to Security Benefit Life’s “B+” rating and 105.29 solvency ratio (note: S&P gives Security Benefit a rating of “A-“). It appears that Security Benefit, while it has a lower rating by A.M. Best, is actually in a stronger position to make good on their promise to annuity owners. The point is that company ratings are just one factor to consider when purchasing an annuity. If you’re looking for principal protection, guaranteed income you can’t outlive, or tax deferral, then annuities may be your best choice (for some of your money), but just be sure to choose the most solvent companies and work with an advisor who can decipher all the details and available options. As always, if you have any questions, would like any of our free reports, would like a free consultation, or would like to attend any of our educational workshops, just give us a call or shoot us an email. We’d love to meet you in person! Don’t forget to tune into “The Safe Harbor Retirement Planning Show”, every Wednesday at 8:00am, and Saturday at 10:00am, WSIC AM 1400. Until next month,

scene, but still enjoy handcrafted cocktails and an impressive beer and wine selection (page 36), a list of a few live music venues from the singer/songwriter vibe of Summit Coffee to the rowdy jam sessions at The Bathtub Gin (page 53), and Jenny Brule put together a review of some of the top brunch spots that are sure to be a kick start in the morning after a night out (page 47). We also have the hottest looks for fall (page 30), a travel story featuring nearby Atlanta (page 60),

and Lauren Blake got the scoop from DJ Big Sexy about his lake lifestyle (page 56). Plus Keia Mastrianni continues her series on small town getaways with her next stop in Morganton. This cool town takes advantage of its location in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains with plenty of outdoor recreation, in addition to a winery, brewery, and art gallery. So this fall, get out! Explore all that the Lake Norman communities have to offer. There are plenty of places to keep you busy for the season.

Louis Hess and Guy Bostian are the minds behind Hessian Studio, a Mooresville based business, which was selected as a finalist for Martha Stewart’s American Made Awards. The duo left the hustle and bustle of New York City to start their own business and pursue their love of design and nature at the end of 2013. Their studio is an outbuilding on the property that Guy was born and raised on. There the two make all natural products and offer graphic design consulting. “We were desperate to attain a quality of life that was

beyond our grasp living in New York City. We both come from rural backgrounds and wanted to figure out a way to do what we loved while having a garden and tend to a brood of laying hens,” says Louis. Hessian Studio’s entire product line was selected as a finalist, and voting is now open to the public to select the winners. Voting is open through Oct. 13 and winners are announced on Oct. 17. Home State Spirits B

eer isn’t the only beverage crafted in North Carolina. The state is also home to several distilleries, offering local libations from rum to moonshine. Show some home state pride with these five NC-made liquors.

Midnight Moon Moonshine: Handcrafted in small batches, this moonshine is based on Junior Johnson’s legendary recipe. Made in Madison, Midnight Moon is triple distilled from corn and made in a copper still. The moonshine comes in nine varieties: original, 100-proof, cherry, strawberry, cranberry, blueberry, blackberry, and apple pie. Using modern technology with a tried and true recipe yields smooth liquor for sipping or mixing.

Carolina Coast Spiced Rum:

Cardinal Gin:

Made in Johnston County by Broadslab Distillery, this spiced rum is all natural and gluten-free. Starting with table-grade molasses and pure granulated cane sugar, this spirit is distilled in a solid copper pot still and aged in charred oak. Jeremy Norris, owner of Broadslab and its master distiller, has a storied family history in the distilling business, and continues to use family recipes.

Southern Artisan Spirits, located in Kings Mountain, was the third legal distillery in the state. Coming from a community that voted itself dry in 1874, the family behind the distillery is dedicated to the revitalization of the craft of distilling. The company makes American dry gin and recently launched a barrel rested gin. Both products are organic and made in small batches.

Defiant Whisky: Out with the old process, and in with the new. Blue Ridge Distilling Co., located in Bostic, has ditched the barrels and turned the whisky-making process inside out. Defiant Whisky is made of only four ingredients—toasted American white oak, cultured yeast, two-row premium brewer’s barley, and water from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Instead of aging in barrels, a spiral cut of the toasted American oak sits in the single malt for just 60 days.

Originally a brewery, Top of the Hill now has an organic distillery located in Chapel Hill. The award winning vodka (whiskey and gin, too) is handcrafted from organic Carolina soft red winter wheat grown less than 100 miles from the Chapel Hill distillery. TOPO is the only USDA certified organic, local, and sustainable distillery in the South.

Brody Thompson Poker Run More than 120 riders and 200 attendees participated in the first Brody Thompson Memorial Poker Run on Aug. 24. Motorcyclists, along with several hot rods, rode a police-escorted route through Iredell County, which began at Tilley Harley Davidson in Statesville and made stops at Lancaster’s BBQ, Stumpy Creek Park, Sports Page, and River City Bar & Grill. Riders picked up playing cards at each stop and the rider with the best poker hand at the end won a $100 prize. Food, live entertainment, and raffles were also part of the event that was named after the late Brody Thompson, who was only two years old when he passed away in a tragic accident on June 18, 2014. The Brody Thompson Foundation works to build playgrounds and financially assist young athletes and college-bound high school seniors.

Almost 100 golfers participated in the Lake Norman Kiwanis Club’s annual golf tournament on Aug. 18 at Cowan’s Ford Golf Club. The weather cooperated for the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, raising almost $10,000, which will go a long way in supporting the club’s mission to help children in our community. The golfers had lots of fun using their mulligan packages and enjoying the many libations served to them on the course. A raffle and silent auction capped the day. The club thanks all the Kiwanian and Kohls volunteers, and a special thank you to all the sponsors. Visit lakenormankiwanis. org for a full sponsor list.

Painter J. Adam McGalliard’s portraits leave the viewer questioning their meaning— and he likes it that way. by MICHAEL J. SOLENDER • photos by GRANT BALDWIN

lakenormanmagazine.com OCTOBER 2014

A

After more than a decade of honing his craft and feeding on the energy that is New York City, J. Adam McGalliard is back in Charlotte and starting to shake things up. The North Mecklenburg High School class of 1996 grad grew up in Huntersville and studied painting at Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 2002 McGalliard left the Carolinas to pursue his MFA from the prestigious New York Academy of Art. Since returning just over a year ago, McGalliard, 36, had his work featured in a solo exhibition at the Cornelius Arts Center and established himself as the manager and chief artist wrangler of sorts at Cube NoDa, a self-sustaining artist collective in a 3,000-square-foot warehouse that also serves as his studio space. McGalliard has lent his talent to at least three teaching positions, a strong passion that he intends to continue. He’s led workshops for the Arts and Science Council in area schools, taught painting for Davidson Parks and Recreation and serves as a teaching instructor for the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture. “I get energized by teaching,” McGalliard says, “I focus on the basics of technique and the fundamentals in my teaching. This serves as a great reminder for me and helps reframe my approach when it comes to my own work. With more experienced students I get excited when I see things click for them and when I can help them experience a breakthrough or an ‘aha’ moment. That’s special.”

“Troche”

“Pink Magnolias”

Contemporary Realist McGalliard characterizes his style as “contemporary realist” and builds upon his technical training in the French academy style that emphasizes attention to detail, anatomy, and brush precision. He also possesses a deep appreciation for color, an expanded understanding that grew from his many years working in the New York production studio of legendary pop artist, Jeff Koons.

“Sunrise, Sunset”

“Pink Magnolias” is a head and shoulders portrait of a steely blue eyed woman with her hair tightly pulled back and face set in a stern forward gaze. A calm lake with evergreens lining the shore serves as background and the model’s face and neck are seemingly enveloped by translucent pink magnolias suggesting a sense of internal thoughts projected outward. The piece was part of his recent show, “Introjection,” where he noted the projected layers found in his work, “add depth to seemingly traditional portraits and force the viewer to question the meanings.” His portraits can easily be mistaken for digital photographs to the casual observer, something McGalliard emphasizes they are not. “All paint,” says McGalliard. “It’s important for me to have people know that my portraits are painted using oil on linen. I use stretched linen on panel because I like the solidity of the panel and the absorption and texture of linen.” As to his return to Charlotte, McGalliard desired a slower, more economical venue to take his career to the next logical point, likely additional teaching and, of course, creating new work. “While there is certainly a mystique associated with art and artists from New York,” says McGalliard, “There’s no reason why great work can’t come out of places like Charlotte, too.” To purchase McGalliard’s work, contact him directly through his website, www.mcgalliard. net. Living Big Radio DJ Big Sexy talks about life at his home on a cove— the perfect spot for relaxing days and lively nights. by LAUREN BLAKE • photos by JUSTIN SMITH

A

After attending countless country concerts, hosting nightlife events, and working on-air five nights a week as a radio DJ for The New 103.7, Phil Tabakelis, better known as Big Sexy, quietly retreats to his lakefront getaway in Mooresville. The ranch-style home, built in 1975, sits on about three acres and boasts a sprawling backyard that’s often used for good old-fashioned entertainment like football and bonfires. Though it’s a 32-mile commute to the radio studio in South End, Big Sexy— as he prefers to be called—says regardless of the time spent on the road, he’d never think about trading his lakeside paradise for city living. “You know, my job is pretty much to party all the time so when I come home, I want to just get away,” he admits. Since his on-air shifts run from 7 p.m. until midnight, Big Sexy’s days are spent soaking up sunshine and Carolina air out on Lake Norman, where he’s usually found paddleboarding, boating, or lounging in his favorite hideaway, the hammock. It’s from this vantage point that he has spent afternoons listening to and reviewing country albums, the type of work he says he can’t complain about. Ironically, as his title and job might suggest, the 27-year-old country music enthusiast didn’t grow up on sweet tea and hush puppies. The native Pennsylvanian, who’s a bit shy of his northern roots and prefers his nickname to his birth name, says the South has just always felt like home. Though he may not have been born in the South, he got here as soon as he could—and there’s a metal sign hanging above his fireplace that proudly shares this sentiment with visitors. “When I was growing up, my Uncle Andy lived down in Daytona Beach, Fla., and we’d go down and see him a lot and I just loved it. You know, he had the cowboy boots, the truck, the good-looking girlfriend and I always looked up to him. I just thought, ‘This guy is a pure badass’. I just wanted to be him,” Big Sexy jokes. “I literally turned 18 on August 7th and on August 25th, I moved down here to go to Johnson and Wales,” he says. “I just always knew I wanted to live in this area when I was growing up.” In addition to being below the Mason-Dixon, waterfront living was also part of his dream. “I’ve always loved being on the water. I think some of my best memories

growing up as a kid, even in Pennsylvania, were being out on the water with my family. So, I always said I’d live on the water and I’d do anything I could to do so, even if it meant living in a pink doublewide,” he jokes. When he moved to Lake Norman in 2012 and was settling on a name for his new digs, The Pink Doublewide came naturally—being that the home features two structures, a main home and a motherin-law suite, joined by a carport, it was a no-brainer. Though it’s not exactly a pink doublewide, it’s definitely got the nostalgic feel of a home built in the ‘70s, with its tile, carpet, wood paneling, and mirrored walls paying homage to the quirky style of the era. The main home has two full bedrooms and its private mother-in-law suite is outfitted with a kitchen and a bathroom so Big Sexy and his four-legged friend, Bo, can enjoy their waterfront oasis free from distraction. Though he enjoys their laid-back hangout, Big Sexy is no stranger to entertaining and opening his home and backyard to friends. During the summer, it’s not uncommon for him to host parties that, unsurprisingly, often include live country music and pig roasts. Recently, “The Pink Doublewide” served as a location for “TikiTerranean,” a family-style ‘50s themed feast and lake party hosted by the folks of Relish, a roaming dinner and activity club. And, though he knows how to throw a party—this is, in essence, a part of his job description—the majority of his time at home is spent taking in the natural beauty of Lake Norman, which he prefers to explore via paddleboard. “I’ll go five or six miles without even realizing it,” he says. “It’s just a new way to see the world. People make fun of it and some people just don’t understand it, but they don’t get to see the things I get to see.” LNM

Modern with a Twist With a commitment to highlighting underground music, fashion, and design, the W Atlanta-Downtown is an ideal getaway for those wanting the insider experience in this sleek Southern city. by KATIE COLEMAN

A

At about a four-hour drive from Lake Norman sits the W Atlanta-Downtown, a high-rise with expansive views of the skyline and a culture of its own. The tone of upscale luxury is set from the décor in the main entrance (guests are greeted with a neon-lit “W” inlaid a wooden wall), to the 35,000-piece metal mobile that resemble flying birds. The W’s lobby bar is outfitted with a metal fountain with basins that look like leaves, plants alongside luxe sofas, and private seating areas surrounded by wooden slats.

Sip handcrafted cocktails expertly poured at the two bars located at the W, the Living Room and WETBAR, and the hotel has a new concept in the works set to open in 2015. Head mixologist Brian Boykin has developed a sophisticated cocktail program utilizing fresh ingredienst and a variety of liquors—and each drink looks as good as it tastes. On the 16th floor you’ll find WETBAR, Atlanta’s only allweather poolside hot spot. The W also hosts events at their nightlife venues, like the ARTSWIM event held at WETBAR, where the hotel paired with local artists to have them paint in the bar, while a DJ spun tunes (you won’t hear radio hits in this hotel) with the Atlanta skyline as a backdrop. For food, look no further than BLT Steak, right off the main lobby. This upscale eatery is a treat offering an array of dishes on the menu, but beef is the clear star. For those wanting to indulge, look no further than the naturally aged steaks, with cuts from hanger steak and filets, to American wagyu skirt and a porterhouse for two. Top off the skillfully broiled steak with one of BLT Steak’s sauces, like the béarnaise or chimichurri. Sides range from the rich gnocchi Parmesan to the unexpected jalapeño mashed potato. Try to save room for dessert for classics like spiced carrot cake and a bittersweet chocolate tart.
