Talk of the Town A Few Suggestions to Start Out the New Year

James D. Stillman

I thought for our first article of 2015 we would discuss a few things that I think everyone should do to start out the New Year. I’m sure there’s more our readers could come up with, but these are some of the things we focus on each year.

GOALS: Review your overall situation to make sure that your goals and objectives have not changed. What if you don’t have goals? Very simple: set some! Most successful folks will tell you that they have specific written goals. Yes, this might take a little time and thought, but it’s well worth it. You always need to know your destination in order to plot a course to get there. BENEFICIARY CHANGES: Has one of your loved ones passed on? Have you been recently divorced? Have you changed your mind as to whom you want to leave your legacy to? IRAs & 401(k)s are often not updated to reflect proper beneficiaries after a divorce or other relevant life events. Updating your Will is not enough! Things like life insurance, annuities, IRAs, and Transfer on Death (TOD) accounts will supersede your Will and bypass probate. Accounts with specific beneficiary designations will be disbursed according to those designations, whether it lines up with your Will or not. So, it needs to be correct! LEGAL DOCUMENTS: See above, but also think about any documents that involve trusts, powers of attorney, etc. If someone has passed away or you’ve changed your mind on who you want to handle your estate, then you likely need to update your documents. LIFE INSURANCE: One of the biggest mistakes people make is not reviewing and updating their life insurance programs. Make sure cash values are performing like you expected. Do you have multiple policies? We’ve had many cases where we’ve been able to combine policies to get more death benefit and in some cases eliminate premium! How is that possible? Life insurance premiums have dropped drastically over the years because folks are living longer and longer. If you’re insurable, don’t miss

out on this one! It’s a big mistake. As taxes continue to rise, life insurance planning will become more and more important. PORTFOLIO RE-BALANCING: Is your portfolio doing what it’s supposed to? Hey, you’re another year older, so do you think maybe it’s wise to get a little safer? The stock market has been in one heck of a bull run since 2009, but how long will it last? History tells us it’s run its course, but who knows? Like Clint Eastwood said in Dirty Harry, “DO YOU FEEL LUCKY?” My advice is this - don’t get greedy. Don’t be afraid to take some profits, count your blessings, and get safer as you get older! In retirement, please think safety first, and income planning strategies second. Chasing growth can be dangerous! BONDS: For those of you that have bond portfolios, take note. We are without question in a “bond bubble” unlike any we’ve ever seen. What this means is that bond prices are high because interest rates are low. Interest rates have nowhere to go but up. When that happens bond prices will fall, period. Yes, as long as the bond company is solvent they will continue to pay the dividend, but the value of your bond portfolio could plummet. So if you think about it, for most folks, holding onto a bond portfolio almost guarantees a loss in value. If possible, consider selling your bond portfolio at these high prices, and repositioning those assets into other strategies that can give you safety, and the same or better income. Doesn’t that sound like a wise thing to consider? As always, anyone that would like a free consultation, portfolio review, or any of our free reports, just shoot us an email or give us a call. Until next month,

James D. Stillman

Happy New Year everybody! We hope you all had a great holiday season and got to enjoy some time with family and friends. It’s always nice to take a little time off to reflect on the past year and prepare for the next. The years sure seem to slip by faster and faster as we get older, or is it just me? I guess that’s why we need to count our blessings more and more as we grow older.

Drs Coleman & Coleman Question: Is getting the implant painful? It seems like it would be… having a titanium post placed into my jaw bone. Dr. Coleman: Actually, the surgical placement of the dental implant is typically a very quick and ‘quiet’ procedure and many adults are pleasantly surprised that they are comfortable having the procedure with just local anesthetic (numbing injection). The detailed planning and digital placement we do in advance actually minimizes your time in the chair the day of your implant placement procedure. Question: Tell me how I can get my teeth extracted and get dental implants and teeth in the same day. Now, exclusively in the Lake Norman area, Drs. Michael and Patrick Coleman are able to offer Dental Implants and Teeth in the same visit! We have invested in technology that, paired with our training and expertise, provide us the unique capability to perform complex Dental Implant procedures in the most efficient and accurate manner possible! Using our 3d imaging along with special software and planning technology, we are able to place the dental implant with precision and accuracy, ultimately giving you the best possible final result - a solid, perfectly placed dental implant with a crown that looks and feels like a natural tooth!

Dr. Coleman: If you are healthy and have good bone health, you are an excellent candidate for a single-day procedure. Each individual is unique and we take every precaution to insure that the implant is a success, so if there is any factor that we feel could compromise the ultimate long-term success of the implant, we would opt for taking each step necessary for the implant to properly seat and become anchored.

Question: Tell me why I should get a dental implant rather than a bridge?

Question: How much does a dental implant cost?

Dr. Coleman: A dental implant allows you to have the single tooth that is non-restorable essentially replaced with a titanium post and the body treats this as if it were the root of the tooth. This is particularly important because the bone needs the root, or the implant in this case, to be present for it to maintain optimal health and growth. From a longevity perspective, this implant, once restored with the crown, will look, act and feel just like one of your natural teeth. Therefore, you can brush, floss, clean around it and there is not the likelihood of bacteria, possible root canal, etc as with the bridge option.

The location of the tooth can determine whether immediate placement an option or not. Also, the health and density of the bone in that area is a key factor. Ultimately, we want you to have your new dental implant and crown for many years, so we take every possible measure to insure its long term success! Dr. Coleman: The implant itself, and the surgical procedure to place it is just under $2,000. Each case will vary depending on the possible need for bone graft material, the type of sedation you decide upon, xrays and other factors. It is really difficult to “shop” for dental implants as you might for a new laptop or T.V. When it comes to the human body and surgical procedures, we approach each individual based on their unique medical history, an extensive examination and 3D scan and finally, the planned end result. Question: Do you do anything besides dental implants? Dr. Coleman: Absolutely! The other procedure we are known for is wisdom teeth.

Editor’s Note

A

As the winter chill sets in this season, we put together an issue full of stories that warm the heart. While this is our annual wellness issue, we took a different direction on that topic. Instead of covering the latest diet trends or fad workouts, we decided to focus on a few inspirational people in hopes that their stories may help motivate you to accomplish all you would like to in the New Year.

First up we have Debra Engelhardt-Nash, a successful consultant and speaker, the winner of

several awards in the past year including being named one of the top 25 women in dentistry, and someone who had to overcome monumental setbacks on her road to success. Read about how she persevered on page 28. We also talked with Julia Landauer, a racecar driver making strides for women in her industry. Though young, she’s had a lifetime of experience that helped her get to

My hope is that these stories will give you the inspiration to start 2015 on the right foot and with a clean slate.

where she is today. Learn all about her on page 30. Both of these great women also have TED Talks you’ll want to watch. There are also some exciting things coming to the lake in the beginning of 2015. With the brewery boom in our area, it should be of no surprise that this trend extends to the lake. At the end of 2014, two new breweries opened, Primal Brewing and Bayne Brewing. To learn all about how this industry came to be a staple at Lake Norman, check out Sam Perkins’ story on page 57. Also in January, Davidson College Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble take their sound international for the first time. The group has a longstanding tradition of touring over the winter break, but this year they’re taking a cruise ship and heading to the Mexican Riviera, with shows along the way. Read about them in Michael Solender’s story on page 64. My hope is that these stories will give you the inspireation to start 2015 on the right foot and with a clean slate—I know they inspired me. And a little inspiration goes a long way.

An oft-heard hurdle for busy people to get to the gym is finding the time between work, kids, errands, and anything else that comes up during the day. Lindsey Regan Thorne, the brains behind Be Pretty and a makeup and hair artist to the ladies of the Carolinas (and wherever else she’s needed), shares her musthaves and how to use them to go from the gym back to the hustle and bustle of everyday life flawlessly.

Step 1

Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes Refill Pack - 25 Count: Give your face a quick wipe down after a workout, instead of going through the hassle of lugging face wash and a towel.

Step 3

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Palette: Instead of hauling all of your individual shadow colors, invest in one palette that has a variety of colors that you can quickly apply. If you have time, you can also apply eyeliner.

Step 5

Kat Von D Powder: This is my personal favorite powder. 24-hour wear with a flawless finish. It pairs perfect with a CC primer, used in Step #4. It provides a smudge and sweatproof finish that does not cake.

Step 7

Kevyn Aucoin Mascara: Apply a few layers of mascara to finish off your makeup application.

Step 2

Rodan + Fields SPF + Anti-Aging Moisturizer: The most important part of makeup application! Protect your skin from the sun and help prevent those wrinkles!

Step 4

Tarte CC Primer: Apply CC cream evenly throughout face. The beauty of a CC cream is that it’s “color correcting”. This product will help vanish any color imperfections after a sweaty, heart-pounding workout.

Step 6

NARS Blush: Apply a quick stroke of blush to each cheek.

Step 8

Tarte Lip Tint: Last and final step, apply lipstick or chapstick!

HOW SHOULD WE SET GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR? I’m a big fan of starting with a clear vision for the year. Once I get a picture in my head (or on paper or Pinterest, if you are the vision board type), I like start to break down the vision into small, actionable steps. It’s better to have lots of simple, realistic goals than a couple of big crazy ones. “I will fill in the graduate school application by February 1” is easier to follow up on than “I will get my Ph.D. someday.” ANY RESOLUTIONS TO AVOID? Positives are easier to embrace than negatives. Rather than saying “I will not eat chips as a snack,” say “I will have a glass of water or carrots and hummus, or apples and peanut butter as a snack if I’m hungry.” Also, don’t make resolutions that involve other people or things outside your control: I resolve to get a raise, get married, or have a baby are tricky as they involve outside factors. IN WHAT WAYS CAN A SEEMINGLY UNATTAINABLE VISION BECOME ATTAINABLE? Part of the nice thing about New Year’s resolutions is that a lot of people make them. There are lots of others in your shoes (misery loves company!) and lot of people willing to cheer you on. Take advantage of the support that’s available and recruit your own pep squad. “Engage the Fox” is available at amazon.com and BN.com

Fashion and philanthropy are not mutually exclusive, especially at Monkee’s of Lake Norman. Store owner Sandy Bowers says giving back and encouraging others to do so is a priority in both her business and personal life. Using Monkee’s clothing, shoes, and accessories as a way to grab shoppers’ attention, Bowers and her team have made quite an impact for local nonprofits through matching donations, clothing drives, and shopping-based donation incentives. The store hosted a Frye trunk show and a ticketed shop and sip event on Oct. 3 for supporters of A Giving Spirit Foundation, a Davidson-based nonprofit dedicated to providing financial assistance to mothers in the greater Charlotte area who are suffering from a debilitating disease or other unforeseen health challenges. More than $4,500 was raised by Monkee’s for AGSF.

A Way With Words Local consultant Debra Engelhardt-Nash shares how her tumultuous life never slowed her down. by LAUREN BLAKE • photos by JUSTIN SMITH

28

lakenormanmagazine.com JANUARY 2015

“Debbie: you will never get picked out of a crowd because of your looks so you need to develop your personality.” These so-called words of wisdom, however unpleasant, stuck to one little girl like a brand on a calf; their practicality and permanence clung to her and carried her through a slew of hardships that most never experience in a lifetime. “I’ll never forget that my mother told me that,” says Debra Engelhardt-Nash, 62, who is a successful consultant and speaker. In 2013, Nash had the opportunity to participate as a speaker at TED Talks, a global initiative to spread intellectual ideas that began as a singular event in 1984 and grew to include annual conferences. “I titled it ‘Mama didn’t lie.’ My personality has carried me through a lot of extraordinary experiences. Situations I had to learn to endure that looks wouldn’t have contributed to one iota.” For Nash, “a lot of extraordinary experiences” runs the gamut from childhood, when she and her mother were homeless and living out of a car, to adulthood, when she recovered fully from brain tumor surgery and regained the ability to walk without a cane, contrary to what doctors had believed. Mama’s truths instilled her with the resiliency to bounce back from whatever challenges life threw her way. “When we were homeless, living in the car—plugging the toaster oven into electrical outlets in gas station restrooms so we could make dinner—I was trained to take risks and learned to be resourceful,” says Nash. “My personality was my survival. I was all I had.” But she did more than merely survive. In 2014, Nash was named one of the “The Top 25 Women in Dentistry,” amongst other extraordinary dentists, lab technicians, and researchers and educators recognized by Dental Products Report. In addition, she is the recipient of the 2015 Gordon Christensen Award, which acknowledges top lecturers in the dental industry. For Nash, it wasn’t an easy road to success. As a teenager, she declared herself a runaway and entered a foster program. She eventually became emancipated and put herself through college, earning a degree in education with a vision of becoming a drama teacher. But life had something else in store for her. Ironically enough, the little girl who would “never

be picked out of a crowd” was in fact selected from an audience, a pivotal turning point that would change her life’s course for the better. “I was recruited out of an audience by a consulting firm to become one of their consultants,” she says. “I first worked out of their office in California and then started my own consulting company in 1985.” Though her mother’s words of wisdom turned out to be technically untrue, Nash looks back with gratitude on the advice she was given and the hardships she faced, crediting it for serving “as a great survival guide for being a consultant.” Such survival tactics have shaped her into the successful consultant she is today, giving her the ability to teach communication and customer service skills in a way that ignites a new perspective and greatly influences any audience. Though she has years of experience consulting for an array of industries from medical to retail, she currently focuses predominantly on the dental industry. Today, she runs her consulting business from Huntersville, where she also happens to manage her husband’s cosmetic dentistry practice; and— throughout it all—she still finds the time to travel around the world for speaking engagements. Whether she’s teaching a course on the art of customer service or giving a speech at a convention for the American Dental Association, her passion lies in empowering businesses and individuals to reignite their desire to thrive professionally. Looking back on her life, Nash says she feels incredibly fortunate. “When you have significant emotional occurrences that happen in your life, they do shape you, they absolutely shape you and it can either devastate you or you can make decisions about what you’re going to do with your emotions,” says Nash. “I’ve always had to learn that I’m in control of my emotions and what I’m going to do with what is dealt to me. I can’t control what happens to me, but I can control how I react to it.” Nash’s hardships molded her into an effective speaker—one that actively engages an audience in a way that is relatable and inspiring. Like the mark that was left on her as a little girl, she leaves an audience with a lasting impression that inspires and warrants change in an unforgettable way. www.debraengelhardtnash.com LNM

Life Fast Lane

in the

Whether on the track, competing in Survivor, excelling at an Ivy League University, or running at the park, Julia Landauer gears up for the win. by CRYSTAL O’GORMAN • photos by JUSTIN DRISCOLL

J

Julia Landauer walks into Waterbean Coffee on Jetton Road in Cornelius. Her appearance doesn’t demand attention. A brown-haired, blue-eyed beauty, for sure, but not flauntingly so. She arrives dressed in light brown corduroy jeans, a dark gray sweater, and old converse sneakers. It’s not her good looks that turn heads as she walks in the coffee house—or on to the racetrack, for that matter. It’s in the way she walks: An assertive step, brisk but evenly measured, a piercing look, and an unwavering presence packaged with a serene smile. She’s got swagger. Landauer, 23, who resides at Marina Shores in Cornelius, admits she hasn’t always been so self-assertive. She says she’s forever indebted to her former World Karting Championship Coach Glenn Butler for teaching her a valuable lesson in self-confidence.

A Lesson in Believing The 13-year racing veteran took to the wheel early on, like she was born in the driver’s seat, racing go-karts along with her younger siblings Emma and Aidan from 10 years old at Oakland Valley Race Park in Cudderbackville, N.Y. Her coach, 49-year-old Glenn Butler of Toronto, Canada said her technical skills weren’t the problem, it was the way she carried herself. “She was very timid at a young age. Her competitors didn’t even notice her.” One day, while coaching her at a qualifying match in Florida, Butler pulled her aside and talked to her about her presence. “Do you see how they (competitors) walk by you without even noticing you’re there? Let them know that you are a force to be reckoned with—stand tall and show them who you really are.” Moving forward, Landauer says, his advice stuck and has helped her tackle other difficult situations, on and off the track.

Trailblazer for Women In 2006, Julia added formula car racing to her schedule, competing dually in

the Skip Barber Racing Series and the World Karting Association. At age 13, not only was she dealing with the middle school blues, but she was also forced to face another challenge. “Being one of the only females in a maledominated sport, there were times when I definitely felt left out, especially with the camaraderie among the guys,” she says. “Unfortunately, it still happens. I know I don’t want special treatment…Women just want the same opportunities and respect.” Respect was earned and Landauer became the first woman to win the Skip Barber Racing Series at 14 years old, after 31 years of series competition.

Winning Workout • Running outside 3 miles per day for 3 to 4 days per week. • Strength training 30 to 45 minutes per day, six days per week, concentrating on her arms, chest, neck, back, and core. Here are some examples of exercise that help Landauer maintain muscle strength while racing: • For neck exercises, Julia lies on a bench with her head and neck off the edge and lifts it. Several sets of 10 to 15 reps, depending on strength. • Squats that advance into shoulder presses, 1 to 2 sets at 10 to 15 reps. • Barbell weight and hold/turn it like I’m steering a car, 30 to 60 seconds. • Planks, 3 times for 1 to 2 minutes. • Horizontal chest press, 1 to 2 sets 15 reps.

32

lakenormanmagazine.com JANUARY 2015

Pushing Her Limits

Staying Grounded

If anything, her career in racing only propelled her love of extreme competition. So it’s no surprise that Landauer enthusiastically accepted CBS’ offer to appear as a contest on Survivor’s 26th installment, Survivor: Caramoan – Fans vs. Favorites. At 21 years old, nationwide viewers watched as she made it almost halfway through the season before getting casted off in April last year. “I have a love/hate relationship with Survivor… I loved the physical exertion, but it was emotionally exhausting dealing with outrageous interactions between cast members.” Given the opportunity, she says she would leap across platforms in the Philippines again. “Survivor taught me that I can hurt and keep going.”

Landauer says when she’s not on the track, she likes to be on-foot, running and taking in nature’s beauty. Three to four afternoons a week she runs trails at Cornelius’ Jetton Park. Her father, Steve Landauer, Chief of the Department of Anesthesiology at Jersey City Medical Center in Jersey City, N.J. says he encouraged his kids to run for exercise and stress relief from an early age. “I had all three of our kids get exercise by having them run around our farm, starting with 1/2 mile at age 6, and steadily adding distances, so by age 12, they were running 8-minute miles for 3 miles. “ Landauer says her father is the reason race fans may catch her sprinting between garages before a race. “It helps me get rid of anxiety and focus on the race.”

More than a Driver

Finishing Lap

Pursuing an education was important to Landauer. After graduating with honors from Stuyvesant High School in New York City, she decided to let racing take the “side” seat by competing only part-time in NASCAR’s Late Model/Whelen Series and the U.S. Legend Car Series to attend Stanford University. She just completed her Bachelor’s in Science degree, concentrating on Science, Technology and Society this spring. Landauer says she loved to find a way to professionally fuse her love of racing with technology that connects drivers more directly with their fans.

Landauer’s life has been in the fast lane for as long as she can remember and she doesn’t plan on slowing down now. She’s entering her third year in the U.S. Legend Car Racing Series and her second year with Coach CJ D’Addario, Jr. and 860 Motorsports of Mooresville. Her goal is to become a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, but with only 43 drivers in the series, she says making the cut will be the ultimate challenge. She looks forward, sitting up straight, shoulders erect, and head held high, she says, “If something is terrifying and amazing, you should pursue it.” www.860racing. com, www.julialandauer.com LNM

Best of the Lake Design Competition Award Winners Best of Show Winner: Advanced Renovations The judges chose this project because they said it was the most amazing transformation. The owners were looking to create a transitional kitchen with a more spacious feel. This new area had to have a modern look, handle the young family’s daily routine, and also be capable of entertaining guests. There was a challenge of incorporating the existing breakfast room and fireplace into the new kitchen design. This new floor plan incorporates the kitchen, keeping room, pantry, side entry, and bar as a brighter and more modern space for the family.

Best Special Project Winner: Chad Goodin Signature Homes The client wanted to turn a closed daycare center into a state of the art dog training facility with a “grass like” environment that allows trainers to work with dogs in a realistic situation without causing harm, hardship to the trainer, dog or continual maintenance of such a large quantity traditional grass. Designers installed an indoor training facility, complete with removable fencing, rubber matting and trench drains allowing for easy clean-up.

Best of the Lake Design Competition Award Winners Best New Home Construction - $1,000,000 Winner: Kingswood Homes The Stoner Residence is a wonderful Pennsylvania Barn House style that was constructed to give the client a clean, neat, and relaxed atmosphere. The client wanted a clean, timeless, yet classic home that was based on Buck County, Penn. architecture. The home has white, crisp paneling that resonates through the home and has details that you would find in a classic Nantucket home. In essence, this home is designed to appear as if it has existed for 100 years.

Best New Home Construction - Single Family Detached $750,000 - $999,000 Winner: Plattner Custom Builders This custom home was built in downtown Davidson. This two story home with a full basement has an office for the family owned business, master suite with spa-like bathroom, and well-equipped laundry room connected through the master closet. Upstairs is dedicated to the kids and hosts a TV/game loft for sharing with a bedroom for each child. Additionally, there is a family basketball court behind the garage, hidden from the front and bordered by natural boulders.

Best New Home ConstructionSingle Family Detached $750,000 - $999,000- Honorable Mention Winner: Lorenz Custom Builders The Client for this project had a very specific vision for what she wanted for the interior and exterior look of this house. For the exterior, the client really like the look of reclaimed brick, but did not like the colors in several samples. The final look was accomplished using 5 different brick colors, each with a different percentage within the mix. For the interior, the main challenges were the flooring choices for the main living areas. In order to carry the look of the brick to the inside, a thin brick was used in the mudroom area on the floor.

Best of the Lake Design Competition Award Winners Best New Home Construction $500,000 - $749,000 Winners: Strom Construction, Inc., Pippin Home Designs, and PTI Designs This project was designed for clients who owned a vacation property on the lake for 15 years, with an existing house and pool on site. The home had to be taken down to transform the site. A multi-level home was created with a walk-out basement, and the garage on the main floor for easy access into the house. In order to design the home in a position that angled towards the right rear corner of the property, overlooking the pool and the best views of the lake, the Entry Porch and Foyer were positioned at angle that more closely faced the street, with the rest of the house on the angle to the views. Varying ceiling treatments were incorporated to add character inside the home.

Best New Home Construction - under $200,000 Winner: Z.L. Metz Homes

Best New Home Construction - $350,000 - $499,000 Winner: Lakemist Homes The “Southport” plan was contracted to be built in a small community on approximately a one acre lot. The goal was to create a niche product that met the challenges of today’s economy and still offer the buyer the custom qualities desired in an upscale home. The design is a Craftsman style with an open floor plan that allows for personal interaction between the kitchen and the great room. The home sits on a beautiful wooded lot and was finished with sod and landscaping along with a full coverage irrigation system. An inviting front porch has ample room for rockers to pass the day as it overlooks the quiet serenity in front.

The ceiling of the front porch features painted bead board that is historically correct. Best of the Lake Design Competition Award Winners Best Remodeling ProjectExisting Home - $276,000 $500,000 Winner: Andrew Roby The owners approached their new project with the thought that it should be a quiet addition, have an appropriate scale, and use the same architectural language as the existing home - an Adam Style Farmhouse. Andrew Roby Construction used reclaimed heart pine floors and original materials stored by the owners from previous renovations. Not only did the owner have reclaimed antique wood paneling for the family room, they had existing interior doors and hardware to be used. The result of this renovation is open living spaces modern life requires with historically thoughtful design.

Best Remodeling Project-Existing Home - $176,000 - $275,000 Winner: Andrew Roby Andrew Roby Construction’s first challenge was to match the unusual sand face brick and to blend all of the exterior materials to create a seamless addition. The new cabinetry was designed to make the work areas in the kitchen function more smoothly and drastically increase the amount of refrigeration with two refrigerators and a full height wine cooler. Pantry and desk areas were redesigned to resemble a piece of modern furniture rather than a traditional kitchen element. Dramatic styling was used to create a more inviting and less conventional kitchen. Existing materials were matched perfectly to create a seamless, properly scaled enhancement to this classic Georgian home.

Best Remodeling Project-Existing Home - $76,000 - $175,000 Winner: Andrew Roby Andrew Roby Contractors found solutions to the client’s needs and desires with quality execution. The width of the existing kitchen was reduced to create the desired butler’s pantry as well as space for the relocated utility room and larger pantry. 150 square feet was added to the rear of the house to create space for the new kitchen as well as a new screened porch with a direct connection to the kitchen while preserving views to the backyard. Unique interior details that required careful coordination by the contractor included installation of the 200+ pound steel range backsplash prior to any other finishes. These details required the installation of finishes to be sequenced differently than many other projects and required the contractor to carefully plan and execute the installation of finished materials.

Best of the Lake Design Competition Award Winners Best Remodeling Project-Bath More than $50,000 Winner: Rion Homes This cramped 8x10 master bath was in need of a makeover. The challenge for Rion Homes was fitting all the features into 80 square feet, and still have an open feel to the bathroom. Wood, glass, tile, and chrome come together in this essentially yin and yang bath; the two sides of the room though contrasting, are complimentary and interconnected. The anchor piece of the room is the custom built vanity carefully constructed of quarter sawn oak and stained richly to enhance the fabulous grain and flecks in the oak.

Best Remodeling Project-Kitchen – More than $100,000 Winner: Advanced Renovations The existing kitchen in this 1960’s home was outdated, dark, and had no room for seating. The owner and Advanced Renovations worked tirelessly in the preconstruction phase of this project to eliminate as many pitfalls and surprises as possible. Extensive demolition of the interior space was required to accommodate the larger, open floor plan. This new open floor plan now incorporates the kitchen, keeping room, pantry, side entry, and bar as a brighter and more modern space for the family to enjoy their time together. The owners were extremely happy with the result and now spend a great deal of time together in their new space.

Best Remodeling Project-Kitchen $50,000 - $100,000 Winner: International Kitchen & Bath The design challenge for International Kitchen & Bath was to make better use of the existing space without major construction to alter the building footprint. The solutions to these challenges were accomplished by changing the breakfast nook to a casual sitting area. The doorway headers were raised to make the whole room appear higher and larger, and airy shelving on both sides of the windows made the room feel more open and let more light into the kitchen. The owners felt the loss of some storage space was a good alternative to “open” the space as much as possible. Updating the appliances, island area, and using flip-up doors rounded out the remodel to make the kitchen more functional and larger without moving walls, doors or windows.

Best of the Lake Design Competition Award Winners Best Remodeling ProjectKitchen - Less than $50,000 Winners: International Kitchen & Bath and Sutton Place Interior Design This home was purchased by a family of seven that relocated from Oregon to North Carolina. The kitchen had to meet the needs of a busy family, not only for meal preparation, but to serve as the heart of the home. Keeping the client’s personal style in mind, the designers created a kitchen with a Tuscan influence. By listening to the clients’ needs and taste and working as a collaborative team, a very dated and styleconfused kitchen became a highly functional and updated room, creating a space for this new Lake Norman family to feel right at home.

Best Outdoor Living Project- $51,000 - $100,000 Winner: Metro Greenscape This project was a renovation of an existing outdoor living space. Metro Greenscape worked with the client with attention to every detail, down to the placement of the plants before installation. The existing deck was replaced with a Trex wood product with an aluminum reveal railing. The brick pillars for the fence had to sit at the exact angle from the home to create a perfect rectangle for the back yard. In the end, the project was completed within the time frame and every detail completed to the client’s satisfaction.

Best Outdoor Living Project – More than $100,000 Winner: Advanced Renovations The owners of this beautiful 1940’s home wanted to take advantage of the favorable southern climate and create an outdoor space that would feel like an extension of the home’s interior. Since the home is located in a historic district, Advanced Renovations had to give special care to ensure that all new architectural details conformed with the existing structure. This project is a true example of the “design-build” process. From beginning to end the owners were in constant communication with Advanced Renovations and worked together to resolve any design or construction issues. The owners were very pleased with the entire process, and the finished product exceeded their expectations.

Best of the Lake Design Competition Award Winners Best Outdoor Living Project Less than $50,000 Winner: Rion Homes This was a collaborative and creative project involving Rion Homes as contractor and designer and the owner. The homeowner wanted a pool house that was functional and matched existing home in architectural detail and materials. Since a more rustic feel was desired, soapstone countertops and painted tongue and groove wall boards, as well as concrete floors with an acid stain were used. Nestled under a large oak, this pool house addition looks like it has always been a part of the home.

Best of the Lake Design Competition Award Winners Best Landscaping - More than $20,000 Winner: Metro Greenscape This home is located in a very prestigious part of Charlotte and the homeowner was having issues with water filtrating into the basement of the home due to the overgrown landscape and grade of the property. Metro Greenscape worked to coordinate the handling of water in the basement by lowering existing planting beds so that water-proofing could be completed. Due to lack of sunlight, plantings were chosen that would thrive in mostly shady areas. Large canopy trees created a great background to the natural landscape. New sod was installed to prevent erosion and the entire property was re-graded for positive water flow.

Boulders and natural stone creek beds were added to the landscape to enhance the natural feel of the home and overall property. In this phase three of an overall re-design of the entire property, the challenge was to continue the feel and design of the backyard to the front yard.

Booming Breweries Lake Norman breweries are on the rise with no signs of slowing down. by SAM PERKINS • photos by GRANT BALDWIN

While the light rail corridor in Charlotte has fostered the region’s brewery renaissance—with 10 breweries operating by the end of 2014—the eastern shore of Lake Norman has fostered a brewery boom of its own. Between Huntersville and Mooresville lie five breweries: Ass Clown Brewing (Cornelius), D9 Brewing Company (Cornelius), Lake Norman Brewing Company (Mooresville), Bayne Brewing (Cornelius) and Primal Brewing (Huntersville). The region saw a brewery boom and bust through the 1990s and 2000s, but home brewing groups remained strong, especially Iredell Brewers United around Lake Norman. Starting with The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in 2009, Charlotte saw eight new

breweries spring up by 2013. Lake Norman’s first brewery, Ass Clown Brewing in Cornelius, opened in 2011. “There weren’t the types of beers that I like out there on the market,” says founder and brewer Matt Glidden, whose recipes include a broad spectrum of ingredients. “There was no brewery in the area, and it was like, ‘why not?’ I was brewing out of my garage, driving my wife crazy, taking over more and more of the house.” As the most established brewery in the area, Ass Clown has by far the most variety, brewing 300 different beers during three years in business and pouring from 32 different taps every night in its taproom. With its success came a neighbor—D9 Brewing Company—in 2013 and

more momentum. “The feedback was so positive over the next few months that in March 2014, we signed the contract on a new 5,000-square-foot location,” says D9 cofounder and co-brewer Andrew Durstewitz, who, with co-owners/co-brewers John Ashcraft and Aaron Burton, opened the new location in September 2014. All the brewers have seen common themes making the Lake Norman area ripe for breweries. Those themes include an unfulfilled niche and a family-driven community with a local focus. Durstewitz emphasizes, “To us, the brewery is a community project. This is not a bar. Bring your family. We’re adding family stuff at the brewery every week. We’re putting in games catering to kids, juices and craft

At D9 Brewing Company, founding brewer Aaron Burton uses a flishlight to check fill levels in a tank of an almost-finished beer called Black Ice.

sodas on tap. No one should be excluded. You want to bring wine, you want to bring food—bring it.” That aspect of the model is one explanation for the success of this boom. The previous model for breweries was often a brew-pub—a restaurant that also did small-scale brewing. “Now, craft is a culture,” he says. “It finally made the inroad to survive.” Breweries often partner with food trucks—themselves an industry flourishing in the region—to simplify their operation and focus completely on the quality of the beer. Durstewitz says D9’s goal is to strike a balance in producing quality beers accessible to people used to light, massproduced beers. “If the community

Lake Norman Brewing Company’s owner Mike Prascak leans over the taproom bar that he designed himself, which includes a to-scale, hand-drawn map of Lake Norman.

doesn’t want the beer, we can’t make it. I lived out West, and their beer was much bigger than East Coast beer. We honed in on this concept of Fanatical Ales. In everything we’re doing, we’re trying to make the light side of big, strong beers. Not in terms of ABV (Alcohol By Volume) or density but in flavor, character.” Mike Prascak and his family saw an unfulfilled niche in Mooresville with more than 32,000 residents and no local breweries. In March 2014, they opened Lake Norman Brewing Company with three other owners, including brewer Sterling Smith, who is one of the state’s few female head brewers. Prascak home brewed for 15 years and led tours at nearby Carolina Beer & Beverage (maker of Carolina Blonde)

before it was sold to Foothills Brewing in Winston-Salem. He says the emergence of places like Duckworth’s—with 112 beer taps at its Huntersville location— have also fostered local breweries. Bayne and Primal both started operations at the end of 2014. Ass Clown, D9 and Lake Norman say business is doing well enough to where they are all looking at expansion. There are a number of other home brewers in the area with ambitions of opening breweries, many of which have already filed for incorporation. “Lake Norman has a lot of potential and growth. You have a great mixture of people,” says Glidden. “I think it’s going to keep evolving, and people are going to keep thinking outside of the box.” LNM JANUARY 2015 lakenormanmagazine.com

Trump Redux Returning to Trump National Charlotte two years post acquisition finds “best of the best” promise more than delivered.

W

When Donald Trump completed the purchase of the former Point Lake and Golf Club in Mooresville in April of 2012 he was enchanted with the property. The golf course in particular caught his fancy as it features views of Lake Norman on 14 of 18 holes. Donald’s son Eric led much of the negotiations during the purchase. When Lake Norman Magazine spoke to him for the May, 2012 issue he said the property was unique.

“I see hundreds of golf course properties each year, this one is special,” said Eric, 30. “We’ll enhance it to be the best club in North Carolina and beyond.” Only two short years later, Trump National Charlotte is more than living up to the promise. “We’ve invested millions on renovations to the course, clubhouse, pool area, tennis courts, Village Square, and virtually every other amenity bringing them to our standards,” says Eric when we caught up

with him this past August. “Our organization moves with precision and expertise when we commit to a project and Trump National Charlotte is no exception. We’re delighted with the transformation.”

Barn Golf & Spa in Hickory. “There’s been no aspect ignored in making this club the gold standard in the industry,” says Arsenault. “Our membership lets me know daily how pleased they are with the changes.” One of the most charming aspects of Trump National Charlotte is the Village Square, a collection of Nantucket-style buildings ringed by cobblestone streets and surrounding a tidy green that serves as a crossroads of sorts in accessing amenities. Here members find both men’s and ladies’ lounges, the Tavern and main dining facilities, a state-of-the-art fitness facility, family activity center, Trump International Realty offices, administrative offices, and perhaps the most popular enhancement of all—a bakery and Starbucks Coffee. “We took what was a small retail storefront and elevated it with a bakery that not only services our restaurants, but brings fresh treats to our members and guests,” says Arsenault. “Adding a Starbucks was a real coup and something the Trump organization was able to facilitate easily.” Each building received a facelift in the renovation which included the addition of copper flashing and down spouts, as well as a fresh coat of Trump National’s signature paint: “Augusta White,” an homage to the famous Georgia golf course. Even the club’s youngest members have experienced dramatic changes geared especially for them. The aquatics programming has more than doubled in size and the enhanced pool boasts sloping, easy entry sides, a giant water slide, and animated squirt stations featuring a friendly whale. An entirely new poolside dining area has just been completed.

Perhaps the most popular enhancement at Trump National Charlotte has been the edition of a bakery and Starbucks Coffee. JANUARY 2015 lakenormanmagazine.com

Design and Enhance Golf, a Trump National mainstay, takes a back seat to none in Charlotte as the Greg Norman-designed course was further enhanced in the renovation by none other than “the Donald.” “Mr. Trump has a very fine eye for course design and worked closely with me in making enhancements that make for a premium golf experience,” says course superintendent, James Sowers, 45. Replacing the greens with “Tif Eagle ultra-dwarf,” a hybrid Bermuda grass, has delivered on the holy trinity for golfers— greens that are firm, fast and putt true. All the bunkers on the course received new sand, the practice area was expanded by nearly 50 percent, and the course has been lengthened with 11 new tee boxes that extend it to 7,500 yards from the tips. But perhaps the most significant aspect of Trump National and one that sets it apart from most other clubs is the guest experience created by the staff. “We are completely dedicated to our members and guests,” Says Arsenault. “They’re why we get up every day.” www. trumpnationalcharlotte.com. How Do We Grow Our Patriots?

We are truly fortunate to have all four of our children at Davidson Day School. The DDS community provides each of them with unique and wonderful opportunities to learn and to grow in the classroom, on the sports field, in the theater, and in the archaeological research fields of Europe and Central America. We appreciate the DDS staff – dedicated educators who love their profession and who inspire our children to work hard, to embrace new challenges and to welcome new experiences. We are entering our seventh year, and we could not be happier about our decision to choose DDS for our family. -Steve, Deb, H (2015), Jack (2016), McCarthy (2019), Gaby (2021)

Music on the High Seas Davidson College’s longstanding tradition of touring their Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble sets sail this month. by MICHAEL J. SOLENDER • photos by LUNAHZON PHOTOGRAPHY

For Davidson College Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble members, the annual tradition of a winter break tour is not only a highlight of their musical experience, but one of the most memorable times in their college career. Past tours have seen the musical groups travel by bus to cities such as Chicago, New York City, New Orleans, and Orlando. The students give performances along the way and experience the hospitality of volunteer host families who provide overnight accommodations and meals. This year’s tour features the Davidson players taking their sound international for the first time. They’re trading in their tour bus for a cruise ship and headed for the Mexican Riviera. More than 60 students along with community and faculty members of the respective musical groups set sail from Tampa, Fla. on a Royal Caribbean ship bound for Belize

City, Cozumel, and along the Mayan Coast of Mexico this month. “Touring with the Orchestra and the Jazz Ensemble is such an incredible experience and an opportunity to really get to know your colleagues on an entirely different level,” says Amanda Preston, 25. Preston is director of musical production and promotion at Davidson and an alumna. She toured with the orchestra as a student and continues to play viola for them. “It’s simply a fabulous experience and one I can’t recommend more highly.”

One of a Kind Opportunity The learning found in performing in new and unfamiliar venues, spending an entire week with their colleagues, and exploring shared experiences offers a

one-of-a-kind opportunity that makes for lasting impressions, according to Tara Villa Keith, 36, associate professor and orchestral director. “The students get involved in the planning and help pick the destination for the upcoming year,” says Keith. “We joked a bit last year when I mentioned that a cruise would be an ideal choice, the students picked up on that and here we are. The participation rate is very close to 100 percent as the majority of our 55-member orchestra and the 18-member jazz ensemble are planning to go.” Bill Lawing, Estes Millner Professor of Music and director of the jazz ensemble, notes the music department has organized a road trip-style tour featuring the orchestra and jazz ensemble for more than 15 years.

“The tradition actually goes back even further to the ‘50s when Davidson would have regional tours for student ensembles,” says Lawing, 63. “To give the same concert four or five times, which is what we do on the weeklong tour, is invaluable and allows for the students to play at a progressively higher level. Getting to know their fellow players and share an experience like this is also just a fantastic learning experience.” Working on the logistics is a labor of love for Lawing, who exchanged coordinating housing, concert venues, and bus transportation this year for ensuring tympanis, a grand piano, and other instruments will be available onboard the ship. “These tours help us build community,” says Lawing. “This year we are taking it to a whole new level.” LNM

L

ast year Terri Taylor captured this sunset scene from Ramsey Creek in Cornelius. Taylor participated in a group on Flickr where members take one photo each week for the whole year called “52 of 2014.” Each week has a theme, and that week it was landscape photography. “Joining the ‘52 of 2014’ project was a way to make sure that I was shooting year-round and learning new techniques. Within the group we vote on the top three winning photos each week. There are photographers from around the world in the group!” Taylor lives in Huntersville with her husband and two sons. She currently takes photos as a hobby with her Canon 60d, but is branching out into more professional work. www.flickr.com/photos/terridoak, www.500px.com/littletee
