Talk of the Town Is Your Advisor Still Right for You?

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: retirement represents a FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE in life. Doesn’t it make sense that a FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE should also take place with your financial planning as you near retirement? In our office, we call this moving from “paycheck mode” to James D. Stillman “retirement mode”. You need to separate your “paychecks” from your “playchecks”, so to speak. By the way, there’s a great book called exactly that, Paychecks & Playchecks by Tom Hegna. Kelly and I have featured interviews with Mr. Hegna on our radio show a few times, and we really like what he has to say about retirement planning. I’d also recommend Finding Safe Harbor in Retirement by James D. Stillman. Sorry for the shameless plug, but I couldn’t help myself! Besides, you can get my book for free. All you have to do is ask (or you can buy it on Amazon – but that’s not free). So far we’ve had great reviews, and I’m very grateful for that. Here’s a very important point to remember when planning for retirement, and especially after retirement. The advisor or firm that got you to retirement may not be the best choice to get you through retirement! Yeah, I know, I just made all those big wire house broker/dealers and banks really mad. But quite frankly, who cares! In past articles we’ve discussed the “three phases of money” (accumulation, preservation, & distribution) in detail. We take on more risk and “accumulate” when we’re young. As we grow older, we need to make sure we are “preserving” what we’ve accumulated. Then at some point, we “distribute” the assets in the form of income to account holders or as an inheritance to heirs (legacy planning). I’ll say it again; accumulating assets is a whole different ballgame than preserving and distributing assets! They require different types of advisors, different strategies, and different skill sets. There is a decided difference between a “Wall Street broker”, and a “retirement-focused planner”. Here’s how you can normally tell: Wall Street focused broker/dealers typically suggest stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or variable annuities with virtually all of your assets, all of the time, regardless of your age. I’m not saying that’s bad or improper. I’m just saying that these strategies are more “growth focused” and often carry more risk than a lot of people in retirement are truly comfortable with. Independent “retirement-focused planners” typically lean more towards safer income-driven strategies such as dividend paying stocks, Separately Managed Accounts, annuities, life insurance, CDs etc. Depending on how the advisor’s business is structured, they can be fee-based, commissionbased, or a combination of the two. There isn’t necessarily anything wrong with any of those payment structures, but we always encourage people to be sure they

understand how their advisor is being compensated. Each individual has to ask themselves a few simple questions to determine what type of advisor they should be working with: 1. How much time do I have before I need to access the money? 2. How much risk am I comfortable with? In other words, how much money am I willing to lose if the markets take a hit? (We’ve learned that losses can often negatively impact the quality of your retirement more than potential growth could help you - especially if you’re drawing income from the assets.) 3. What’s most important at your stage of life: growth, safety, or income? What combination of these things suits your current situation? 4. Do you want your retirement income to be guaranteed or flexible (what we call “maybe income”)? 5. Does my advisor operate under a Suitability Standard or Fiduciary Standard? Be sure to know the difference, because it can greatly impact the advice you’re receiving. As with anything we discuss, it really comes down to balance and understanding. There is no single “right way” to plan or “perfect strategy” or “one-size-fits-all” approach, so all we is ask is that you takes steps to be sure you’re really comfortable with what you’re doing with your assets. At JDS Wealth Management, we offer a free analysis of your current portfolio. This free report will include a risk analysis (safe/risk ratio), fee analysis (are you getting your money’s worth), tax evaluation, and if requested a written guaranteed income plan. We also have numerous free reports and can “stress test” your portfolio. Stop by, visit our website, or just give us a call for additional information. Until Next Month, James D. Stillman

Editor’s Note

T

Toward the end of last summer we set the editorial calendar for 2015, deciding that in June we would do a men’s issue. Fitting, right? With Father’s Day this month, it’s the perfect time to shine the spotlight on some of the cool guys who call Lake Norman home. The theme of our cover story, “Take Note,” on page 38 came out of a meeting with Virginia Brown, the

communications manager of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. We were discussing some of the talented musicians who make up the symphony, several of whom live at the lake. I’m pretty certain my thought process went like this: “You know what would make a great headline? The men of music. I should do a feature on the men shaping the music scene at the lake.” And that’s how this issue began. After what started as a catchy title and some alliteration, we were able

to find nine guys from the various lake communities shaping the growing scene. From the mainstays like Frank Dominguez and Case Warnemunde to new kids like Knowne Ghost (featured on the cover), writer Michael Solender takes you behind the scenes with the guys and talks to each of them about music at the lake. The common thought from all of them is that music is here, it’s varied in genre, and Lake Norman is a destination for live shows. We couldn’t do a photo shoot with nine men without also taking

the opportunity to showcase some new trends in men’s fashion. Stylist Stacee Michelle worked with each of the guys and their existing wardrobes, while also pulling some finishing touches from boutiques around the lake and in Charlotte. We took advantage of great views of the lake by shooting at Langtree Lake Norman, which happened to be hosting Langtree Live, a free concert series, during the last part of the shoot. And so with live music playing, we chatted with a band, promoters, and organizers about music. See what these influencers have to say (page 38) and start exploring our local music for yourself. It’s one of many cool scenes you’ll want to take note of in Lake Norman these days.

Bands & Beer by JENN BAXTER

Lake Norman residents, Matt and Lindsay Dobson, are joining forces with local music legend, Abe Reid, to bring a new TV show, Rhythm and Brews, to the Charlotte and Lake Norman area. The show, which will air on Time Warner Cable Public Access, will highlight the best of both the local music scene and local breweries. We sat down with the show’s creators to get all the details. ➤➤How did you come up with the concept for Rhythm and Brews? “The thought behind it was to help raise awareness for bands and breweries. Like the great beers coming out of Charlotte, there is a whole music scene happening. So our dedication to great beer and music sparked the idea.” ➤➤How did Abe get involved with the project? “We met Abe Reid and the Spikedrivers a little over 12 years ago when they used to play at Fat City, a bar that helped start the NoDa scene in the early days. Abe, to us, is a local legend that has filled Charlotte with music for years. Due to our friendship and his brilliant personality...it was a no-brainer.”

Hosts Abe Reid and Lindsay Dobson will be interviewing bands and brewers for the new show, Rhythm and Brews.

➤➤What types of music will you feature on the show? “There are going to be 12 episodes. The first four episodes will have one featured band per show. The first four bands are Abe Reid and the Spikedrivers, Drew Foust and the Slim Pickins, David Childers, and The Loudermilks. The music is going to be a cross between blues, folk, singer/songwriter, and good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll. Our goal is to be able to grab the attention of age groups from 21 to 75 years old. [Age] doesn’t matter…everyone loves great music.” ➤➤What is the #girlslikecraftbeer campaign? “The #girlslikecraftbeer segment of the show is a way for local breweries to appeal to more women. We will do a spot for the girls so they can learn more about the beers they already love.” ➤➤With new breweries seemingly popping

22

lakenormanmagazine.com JUNE 2015

up every few months, why do you think the Lake Norman area is so appealing for craft breweries? “That’s easy....the lake loves beer! We already know the Lake Norman area is attractive for new breweries because of its previously uncharted territory. It’s a way for start-up breweries to make a mark in a new environment and invite locals to come along for the ride. The craft beer movement has been a little slow in making its way up from Charlotte. However, with the influx of new and exciting breweries, like Ass Clown Brewery, the scene has changed. Huntersville and Cornelius used to be dominated by mostly corporate-run restaurants and bars and now you see a major takeover of “mom and pop” restaurants, bars, and especially

breweries. It has been really cool to see people put their personal stamp on the community and bring something new to the table. Things are happening. We’re just glad to be a part of it.” ➤➤How can people check out the show and why should they tune in? “The show in Charlotte will be aired on Time Warner Cable Public Access channel 9 and channel 19 public access at the lake. It then will go to On-Demand for a week after the show airs. After that, for those who don’t have Time Warner, we will post it on YouTube. If you love local craft beer, awesome music, and want to keep your pulse on what’s going on in our community, then Rhythm and Brews is the show for you.”

Tee Time

Course Dialog How to hold your own during in-game chit chat.

S

BY MICHAEL J. SOLENDER

Stick to these basic tenants when it comes to making idle chatter on the golf course and you’ll finish your round safely under par. The good news: You’ve scored a coveted spot in the boss’s foursome at his new, ultraswanky private club. The bad news: You’re expected to hold up your end of the conversation and help entertain two important clients you’ve never met, let alone spent five hours with. Now what? Relax and follow these five tenants for golfing banter made easy and you’ll fit right in no matter the social situation.

1. Master the compliment – Great ball!

2. Never talk business – Yes, you are with the customer. Yes, the boss expects this outing will lead directly to billables. Your main job here, however, is to tip the guy in the beer cart and not make a mess of things. Nothing screws up a golf game more quickly than facts, figures, bill rates, and advance requirements discussions. You’ll see these folks soon enough off the course, if you manage to keep them entertained.

3. Be quick to concede – Helping make the customer feel good without being a complete sycophant involves navigating a fine green line on the golf course. While you should avoid conceding 10 foot kneeknocking puts, do be very generous with

24

lakenormanmagazine.com JUNE 2015

a “that’s good” when their ball is even close to being “in-the-leather.” It’s also a valiant move when you’re crushing your opponent to pick up and pocket your ball calling “halfsies,” even when they have no chance of catching you on a hole. Your boss will thank you in the morning and you may even ink the big deal you’ve been working on.

4. Gamble and engage in betting games – Folks gamble on the golf course. This is a simple truism that cannot and should not be ignored, especially with customers. Small stakes are fine; everybody loves a $3 Nassau or some Bingo-bango-bongo for a few beans. Don’t bet for drinks and/ or the post round meal as it is already a given you’re popping for those. But a friendly game of Snake or Wolf or even 5-31 that won’t break the bank is a welcome diversion and another opportunity for

you to be a gracious loser. And make no mistake about it; you must lose if you know what is good for you.

5. Remain completely neutral on Tiger – The most important of the five tips on banter and really a must – DO NOT TAKE ANY position on Tiger. Your partners will try every Tiger question in the book. Remain calm and neutral. Is he slumping or coming back? Better with Stevie or post Stevie? Will he break Nicklaus’ record or not? What is with him and Lindsey Vonn? This is a trap and a test and will lead to your being one-upped in any business negotiations if they are able to read you here. Just practice the following Tiger anti-positioning statement and you’ll do fine: “I’m not really sure–on the one hand he looked awfully good at the Players, but I don’t know about his performance at the Masters.”

GRANT BALDWIN

Monster drive! and, Whoa baby, beau-tiful shot! are examples of compliments that while flattering, don’t appear overly effusive. Golf is a game of intermittent rewards and one payoff that golfers never tire from is hearing how great our shot is. Remember commiseration is the next best thing to a compliment. Oh, tough bounce! or, Un-be lieve -able! I saw it but I don’t believe it! Are equally acceptable lines of solace that your partners can use to lick their wounds as you and your boss trounce them in four-ball.

Baked Summer Squash by JENN BAXTER

B

Barbee Farms, a century farm whose land has been farmed by the Barbee family for over 100 years, is one of the founding farmers for the Davidson Farmers Market. Although they have grown cotton, small grains, and even produced hogs in the past, farm manager Brent Barbee has now taken the reins in the direction of growing fruits and vegetables. Their summer bounty includes nine separate plantings of squash, for a total of 3,500 squash plants, with 300 to 500 lbs. of squash being sold at the farmers market each week. Visit them year-round at the Davidson Farmers Market for locally grown seasonal produce, or to see a full list of items the farm grows, visit their website at www.BarbeeFarms.net.

Serves 6 Ingredients: 2 pounds summer squash (a mix of yellow and zucchini squash is recommended) Olive oil to coat ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese ¼ cup breadcrumbs ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon pepper Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the stem ends and slice the squash crosswise in 1/4-inch-thick rounds. Toss with the olive oil.

2. In a small bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. 3. Arrange the squash rounds in a 9-x12-inch rectangular baking dish or 10-inch pie plate. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture over. (TIP: For added flavor, add some chopped onion to the bottom of the baking dish before adding the squash.)

4. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the oven for 30 minutes. 5. Remove foil and bake another five minutes until the top is bubbling and crispy.

Take Note

These men make the burgeoning musical scene an integral part of the Lake Norman lifestyle. by MICHAEL J. SOLENDER photos by ZAIRE KACZ styled by STACEE MICHELLE shot on location at LANGTREE LAKE NORMAN

These are heady times for the Lake Norman music scene. Cornelius and Davidson are leading the charge showcasing local talent and making the lake the place to enjoy everything from bluegrass, classical, jazz, classic rock, and reggae to country. Here’s the skinny on the scene from several area guys who are helping define it.

38

lakenormanmagazine.com JUNE 2015

The Impresario Case Warnemunde, 29, has made it his personal mission to showcase the depth and breadth of musical talent surrounding Lake Norman. The 2014 Lake Norman Citizen of the Year is founder of Bella Love Inc., a company providing local talent and promotional support to area nonprofits for community events. “When I relocated here six years ago I started meeting incredibly talented musicians and artists passionate about their work and the value it brings to the community,” says Warnemunde. “We highlight the value of collaboration in uplifting the entire community.” Warnemunde is a key driver behind the wildly popular 2nd Friday series at Cornelius’ Oak Street Mill, regularly drawing thousands for local bands like Knowne Ghost, the Glass Hammers, and Astral Lion. Building on their success, they’ve recently expanded by adding shows at D9 Brewing Company. “Our music scene rivals any in the area,” says Warnemunde. “We’re only getting better.”

The New Kids Knowne Ghost arrived quietly on the Lake Norman music scene two years ago, an offshoot band formed by guys who played music in church together. Quiet no longer, the four 20-somethings now rock crowds at Oak Street Mill and are gaining rabid fans at Charlotte venues such as the Milestone, Neighborhood Theatre, and Snug Harbor. Lake Norman is home for bassist Jordan Daugherty, rhythm guitarist Cade Ratcliff, drummer Bobby Thomas, and lead guitarist Jake Youngblood. “We jokingly refer to our sound as ‘Southern Nugraze,’” says Ratcliff, 22, singer and songwriter. “It represents a confluence of three genres that influence our music, Shoegaze, Poppunk, and Americana.” Daugherty notes the lake has become a music destination for many. “People come up from Charlotte,” says Daugherty, 21. “D9 Brewing Co., [in Cornelius], Lake Town Tavern [in Cornelius], and Kilted Buffalo [in Huntersville and Mooresville] are great venues and with regular area events showcasing homegrown talent, locals don’t have to leave the lake to experience live music.”

The Classical Sage There is no larger voice influencing the area’s music scene than WDAV general manager and content director, Frank Dominguez. Dominguez, 54, has been a fixture at the classical radio station since 1994. He ensures WDAV serves as a companion to compliment the routines of surrounding area listeners. “We provide 22 hours of locally curated programming every weekday for our audience,” says the caramel-voiced Dominguez, “That’s significant when you consider larger metropolitan markets such as Houston have turned to national services for programming.” Dominguez-programmed and hosted Concierto is a weekly bilingual English/Spanish classical program bringing national acclaim to WDAV. It’s featured on 35 stations across the country, including major markets such as Miami, Houston, and even in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Drawing from the rich well of classical knowledge in the community, WDAV offers listeners a wide variety of programming. Those tuning in may hear discussions with CSO maestro and Lake Norman area resident, Christopher Warren-Green, a spotlight on the Davidson Choral Society, and concert previews from Davidson’s St. Albans Episcopal Church Concert Series. “Davidson stands for excellence in liberal arts,” says Dominguez. “Classical music is a lovely interpretation of that ideal. We’re thrilled to be a part of so many people’s daily routine.”

The Veteran Few spend more time making the local musical rounds than Travis Weddington. Performing with bluegrass band Coddle Creek and progressive rockers Duk Tan, Weddington, 31, plays just about every venue from Mocksville to Denver. The hardworking music man also squeezes in time hosting the regular Wednesday night live music showcase at Huntersville’s Vinyl Pi. “The scene has really evolved over the past several years,” says Weddington, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist. “It used to be cover music and juke joints. Now there are more venues, more original music, and an open-minded attitude from audiences interested in listening to new things. Festivals bring out families and events like [Mooresville concert series] ‘Live in the 115’ are great for local business.”

42

lakenormanmagazine.com JUNE 2015

The Host Brian Fay’s LinkedIn profile unabashedly lists his job title as “Musical Guru.” Co-owner of Huntersville eateries Vinyl Pi and Cork and Cask, Fay, 36, brings his passion for music to each restaurant–a formula proving popular with his patrons. “Vinyl Pi pays tribute to our love of music with themed booths featuring memorabilia from bands like the Grateful Dead and the Beatles to our extensive collection of vinyl and the Wednesday evening live musical showcase,” says Fay. He notes the showcase is an audition platform for bands looking to be featured on regular Friday and Saturday live music nights at the Pi. Baby brother to the Pi is Cork and Cask featuring tunes from more than 700 records creating just the right musical vibe.

The Technician Jim ‘Big Dog’ Nash, Davidson College’s technical director, has supported every concert, symphony performance, graduation, musical, and outdoor event at the college for the past 12 years. His team of sound engineers, lighting designers, electricians, riggers, and various stage personnel have worked on everything from a years ago Bob Dylan concert to a recent production of Fiddler on the Roof. “Music at the college is very important to the overall student experience,” says Nash, an avid harmonica player whose own group won a faculty/staff/student ‘Battle of the Bands’ in 2006. So often what people remember about college life is the time they were in a band, or the friendships they made enjoying the variety of free concerts we have. SOUTHERN STYLE A Davidson mother-son shopowner team offers insight into this season’s looks at the lake. by MARGARET KAUFMANN • photos by GRANT BALDWIN

W

Warm weather is here, which means that men’s wardrobes are transitioning into a refreshing, lighter look. On Main Street in Davidson is Dixieland Clothing Company, a gentleman’s clothing store full of charm and style. Dixieland opened in February 2014 and is owned by Jan Hampton and her son Tyler, currently a student at UNC-Wilmington. When out of town Tyler manages the business from afar, but he makes the trip back to Davidson each weekend. Tyler came up with the idea for a preppy clothing store when he realized how few places there were to buy men’s clothing between north Charlotte and Statesville. “I saw a need in this area for a Southern clothing store for men and knew I had to change that,” Tyler says. “Fortunately our family owns this building, which previously housed a bicycle shop.”

The products and brands Dixieland carries appeal to varied ages and are by no means limited to only men. “Women come in here and actually buy more of the T-shirts than men,” Tyler says. “Around 20-30 percent of our business comes from Davidson College, but most of our customers come from the surrounding area,” Tyler notes. “We have people coming in from places all over the onehour radius of Davidson.” Lake Norman men are choosing some staples in a brighter hue these days. “I’d say that the colorful, button down shirt is one of that biggest trends right now for men,” Tyler says. “Short shorts for men, with a 7-inch inseam, are also very popular among the high school and college population.” Bowties are another essential item for men in the Lake Norman area—Dixieland Clothing Co. sells about five bowties for every one necktie. In the back of the store, there is a pool table and fresh sweet tea available for customers—cementing the down-home charm. Dixieland Clothing Co. is excited for the future, and hopes to eventually open a larger store in another location. But for now create a crisp, colorful wardrobe for a summer on the lake. LNM

Along for the Ride

A local business owner explains how his shop thrived in the internet age. by Jenn Baxter • photos by Justin Driscoll

“I remember one company said, ‘nobody will ever buy wheels or tires on the internet,’” says Mike Mashburn, owner of Rimz One in Mooresville. Having grown up on the West Coast with an interest in modifying vehicles, Mashburn, 45, moved to Mooresville in 1999 and met his wife Emily, a fellow car lover. Although they both had day jobs that kept them busy, they decided to start a wheel business on the side, selling to internet customers using a newly-developed website called eBay. But first they had to get their idea across to wholesalers. “It proved to be quite a task to get certain wheel and tire wholesale companies to sell to us working from a home office and our two-car garage,” he says. “Most companies said they wouldn’t sell to us because we did not have a retail store.” But Mashburn and his wife believed in their vision and started their company with just $300. They worked

50

lakenormanmagazine.com june 2015

with the companies that were willing to sell to them and bought discontinued wheels and scratch and dent products, constantly flipping their profits back into buying more wheels. “It eventually started to grow,” he says. “We listed more and more products on eBay to sell and it worked.” Eventually, Mashburn quit his day job and started spending his mornings answering emails and phone calls, and his afternoons packing shipments out of their home garage. “It wasn’t until our garage and dining room were stacked full of wheels to the ceiling that Emily said we need[ed] to find a shop to work out of,” he says. So in 2005, they moved to their location at 557 North Main Street. in Mooresville and hired their first employee, Scott Campbell, a web designer. “We knew we had to have a website to compete in the market,” says Mashburn. Shortly after, they hired their second employee, Jim

Mike and Emily Mashburn

Kern, a fellow West Coast native who had also worked in the tire business. “[He] saw that we were struggling to keep up with the orders and said, ‘I can help you.’” And the orders kept coming. In fact, the business is now one of the fasting growing companies on the internet for wheels, tires, and accessories. Mashburn now employs 14 people and will be moving into a new facility at 2550 Charlotte Highway (NC 21) in late June. “We will have a showroom like you have never seen to display the products we sell,” he says. “We want the customer to walk through the doors and their mouth[s] drop open.” But even though their local business has grown substantially over the years, thanks to their face-toface customer service, 80 percent of their business still comes from internet sales, national magazine ads, and social media sales.

“We ship all over the world,” says Mashburn, “It’s kind of crazy.” But with an internet presence as large as theirs, it should come as no surprise. Currently, they have nearly 36,000 followers on Instagram and a staggering 322,000 likes on Facebook. It’s a response that Mashburn says they worked all hours of the day and night to achieve. “You can’t wait for them to come to you,” he says. “You have to go put yourself in front of your potential customer.” This was particularly important since he says customers often don’t realize exactly what they offer. “We can compete with any major tire chain store for anything they sell,” he says. “Sometimes it takes time for [people] to see that.” june 2015 lakenormanmagazine.com

In addition to selling every brand of custom wheels and every brand of tire, they offer custom painted wheels and unique finishes like camo and carbon fiber. They are also the only company with the rights to sell Realtree Camo finished wheels in the U.S. “What most people don’t know [though], is that we do more than custom wheels and tires,” he says. “We also up-fit cars and trucks with aftermarket accessories.” Mashburn says customers also don’t often realize that they work on more than just trucks. When, in fact, they’ve handled everything from classic cars to minivans, for clients that range from professional athletes to full-time moms. “We are starting to see more of the soccer mom customers bringing us their SUV for a wheel and tire upgrade,” he says. But no matter what your needs are, Mashburn wants to make sure your experience at Rimz One is an enjoyable one. “Ask us anything,” he says. “We are here to help and educate you on what you need or want for your vehicle.” It’s the type of service that has made Rimz One the success that it is today. “If a customer leaves happy, then you have done your job,” says Mashburn. “If you let a customer leave unhappy, then you had better do everything you can to fix it.” LNM

Michal Bay is not a man who does things in halves. Every business he takes on, he does so with 100 percent effort. So, when he decided to open a pizzeria in the Merino Furniture store that he owns in Mooresville, he didn’t do it casually. “Customers would ask me everyday, ‘where can I get something to eat,’ so I thought that I needed to open a small restaurant here. I chose to open a pizzeria because I couldn’t find truly authentic Neapolitan pizza anywhere.” To that end, Bay didn’t just open a pizzeria—he first traveled all over Italy for weeks at a time to learn exactly what was needed to make the best Neapolitan pizza. Neapolitan pizza is the type that comes from Naples, Italy; similar to New York style, but not quite as doughy. In Naples, Bay met a man who custom-made pizza ovens from volcanic ash. These wood-fired ovens well surpass 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit and are what give the Neapolitan pizzas their delicious crisp, slightly-charred crust. Bay imported three of these powerful ovens, but he also imports the ingredients for the pizzas: San Marzano tomatoes (grown only in Naples), bufala mozzarella

(traditional mozzarella made from water buffalo milk), and ‘00’ flour to make the tender crust. Bay opened Alino Pizzeria in late February and within a week, word of mouth spread and the pizzeria was a success. “Last week we had two native Italians come here from Winston-Salem. They said that they heard about our pizza and wanted to try it,” Bay says. It’s not unusual for customers to stumble upon Alino at lunch, and then come back the same evening for dinner. Alino is an authentic Italian pizzeria, meaning the toppings are pared down (don’t look for a Hawaiian pizza here), but of the absolute highest quality. It didn’t take long for locals, used to American pizzerias, to turn their attention toward this truly Italian pizzeria—it does steady, if not busy, lunch and dinner business

58

seven days a week. In addition to pizzas, Alino has a large house salad, a few calzones, and even a child’s size calzone as well as creamy house-made gelato. There’s a good selection of beer and Italian wines, too. While the pizza is the star of the show at Alino, it would be remiss not to mention the environment—it is not what one would expect from a pizzeria. Twenty-foot ceilings, open and airy, sunlight floods the space made up of exposed, antique brick walls, polished concrete floors, and casual, natural wood tables. You can watch as your pizza is made in the open kitchen, or sit outside under large umbrellas. There’s even a playground within the fenced outdoor dining area to keep children entertained, while parents linger over a tasty pizza, sweet Roman gelato, and a nice glass of Chianti. LNM

Start Your Engines Richard Petty Driving Experience delivers a NASCAR-sized adrenaline rush to fans eager for an extra-exciting day at the track. by michael j. solender

Go big or go home. That’s what I was telling myself as the attendant waved me through the tunnel at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I slowly navigated my SUV onto the track apron and into the shadow of 134,000 on-looking seats, each devoid of rabid NASCAR fans this sunny Saturday morning. My debut into the super-charged world of NASCAR under the Carolina blue sky would be witnessed by only a few dozen other race enthusiasts, each of us there for an authentic day at the track courtesy of the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Petty, of course, is “The King,” NASCAR royalty who won seven Winston Cup Championships, seven Daytona 500’s, and 200 overall NASCAR wins, a record that many say will never be equaled. For more than 15 years through RPDE, Petty has offered a unique, hands-on-thewheel, pedal-to-the-metal chance for fans to drive their very own 600 horsepower ride. “We give race fans the opportunity to drive a NASCAR style stock car on the very same track as their favorite drivers,” says Christian Selent, 27, operations manager for RPDE at Charlotte Motor Speedway. “We’re here [at Charlotte] 40 to 50 days per year depending on the weather and will have about 200 people participate in drive alongs and 150 experience a ride along on most weekends.”

Rookie Experience Novice that I was, my initiation to the track was RPDE’s Rookie Experience. Together with a dozen or so other guys (women are welcome too, though my class was sans females) we were first sized and fitted with one piece driving suits and helmets equipped with two-way communication. At RPDE drivers take the wheel with a veteran instructor riding shotgun around the oval. With their hand strategically hovering over an engine kill switch, their job is to coach you around the track and keep you safe. During orientation we learned what we could expect, and strategy navigating the track. Next stop: asphalt. Here I waited nervously for my number to be called. As the 77 car pulled up, the announcer (yes, really) introduced me to the “crowd.”

I wedged my torso through the driver-side window, my heart racing at higher RPMs than the tachometer would register over the next 10 minutes. Next to me was James Stephenson, former NASCAR Truck Series driver and my copilot. Stephenson, 38, immediately set me at ease and coached me to take the first of my eight laps easy until I got the hang of it. After a handful of other cars whizzed by, it was my turn to shift out onto the track. Though completely experienced with manual transmission vehicles, I managed to shift the car into third gear instead of first at the start. Not 100 yards onto the track and I’d already screwed up. James took it all in stride telling me to shake it off and once I found fourth gear I was soon approaching 110 mph with James urging me on. The next 10 minutes were a blur, and while I didn’t really come close to the full 150+ mph capacity of my rig, I was grooving left turns high up the bank at Charlotte Motor Speedway, having a blast. All the while I was imagining the fluttering checkered flag and a champagne shower awaiting me at the finish. The champagne, it turns out, would have to wait. Jeff Gordon has nothing to worry about. Nashville S k y l i ne Visitors to the Tennessee capital find an exciting new south city exploding beyond country music. by Michael j. solender

T

There’s a creative cultural renaissance happening in Nashville moving Music City beyond the country music juggernaut for which this town is synonymous. Artists, designers, new age retailers, and inventive culinary pioneers are flocking to Nashville riding an economic boom and 50 straight months of consecutive population growth. A quick one hour nonstop from Charlotte, Nashville is within easy reach. Better plan an extended visit though—there’s too much to experience in a weekend.

When Bob Dylan came to Nashville in the late 60s teaming with the likes of Johnny Cash, Charlie Daniels, and Charlie McCoy, the result was Dylan’s iconic Nashville Skyline album and the permanent cementing of Nashville as the epicenter of the recording industry. The CMHOF is a gem with more than 2.5 million artifacts ranging from Elvis Presley’s gold Cadillac to cowboy costumes worn by Hank Williams. • Hatch Show Print uses hand operated letter presses to create music posters for tens of thousands of concerts since 1879. Shop tours offer a fascinating glimpse into this slice of true musical Americana. • Live music while in Nashville is a must with hundreds of venues from the celebrated honky-tonks like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and Robert’s to the Grand Ole Opry. Visitors will find something to their liking 7 days a week. Our favorite is the Sutler Saloon where you’ll catch Grammy award-winning songwriters sharing the stage with up and coming stars of tomorrow in an intimate, clubby setting.

Do

• Explore the visual arts by hopping through Nashville’s dozens of galleries. Head to Fifth Avenue where you’ll find the Arts Company, established by Nashville arts doyenne, Anne Brown. This stunning gallery laid a foundation for many others in creating a vibrant gallery hub sating the growing demand from collectors from Nashville and beyond. Just steps away, Tinney Contemporary hosts solo shows featuring mid-career contemporary artists and “outsider art” work here is consistent in its minimalist aesthetic. First Saturday gallery crawls take guests through more than 20 galleries throughout the city. • Handcrafted goods are very much in vogue in Nashville’s emerging Wedgewood/Houston neighborhood. Here Fort Houston, “facilitators of human potential,” is leading the charge. The creative “co-making” space has machine shops for building custom motorcycles, woodworking shops, jewelry fabrication, screen printing, and more—all in shared cooperative space.

Nashville is a cultural mecca featuring artists and craftsmen in dozens of galleries and incubators like Arts Company, Tinney Contemporary, and Fort Houston.

Shop

• Marathon Village is a reclaimed historic automobile factory stretching for four blocks and featuring artists’ studios, offices and eclectic retailers. Soothe your sweet tooth at Bang Candy Company where handmade marshmallows are dipped in dark Belgian chocolate and finished with flavors like Maple Bacon Bourbon and Rose Cardamom. Otis James Nashville creates handcrafted goods of distinction such as bowties, neckties, hats, and caps for discriminating gentlemen and ladies. • Goorin Bros. has “a hat for every head” ranging from custom ball caps to finely hand woven Ecuadorian Panama straw hats. Their stylish shop is steps off the hustle and bustle of Broadway offering a striking dichotomy. • The Fiddle House is an east Nashville acoustic string shop that repairs, restores, and sells violins that appear in concert halls and honky-tonks.

Visit Marathon Village to shop at eclectic retailers like Otis James Nashville (bottom), which produces handcrafted bowties, neckties, hats, and caps. For something a bit more country, visit Goorin Bros. (top right). It wouldn’t be Music City without The Fiddle House (bottom right), a shop that repairs, restors, and sells violins.

How Do We Grow Our Patriots? Maggie Sellers (11th) started at DDS in 9th grade. While she tends to like all subjects, Maggie has a particular aptitude for mathematics. This year, Maggie took on the extra challenge of enrolling in Calculus III at Davidson College, in addition to a DDS course load that includes AP Statistics, AP English Language, AP U.S. History, Honors Chemistry and Honors Spanish IV. Her cumulative G.P.A. is 4.26. Maggie is also an exceptional trombone player. She earned a chair in the Charlotte Youth Symphony, for which she must play in her school’s band, take private lessons and attend a week-long summer camp. Plus, after she filled in for a trombone player on leave term, Davidson College’s Jazz Ensemble asked Maggie to continue with the group. As a result of both of these commitments, Maggie has rehearsals 5 days a week, on top of her academic work. As a senior next year, Maggie is planning to pursue an independent study with our Math Chair, Dr. Henry Neale. He explains Maggie well: “The qualities that impress me the most about Maggie are her motivation and perseverance. Maggie always seems focused on understanding concepts well enough to apply her understanding in a variety of situations; grades are strictly a measure that Maggie uses to indicate how well she knows the material. This motivation to understand things well is a true pleasure for a teacher. This ability has proven to be a tremendous asset for her in the classroom of course but also well beyond it.”

Eat

• Edley’s Bar-B-Que lays out inspiring breakfast fare like the “Nashville Nasty,” a crusty buttermilk biscuit with chicken tenders and sausage gravy. The smoked brisket breakfast burritos are insanely tasty. • Take in lunch at Acme Feed & Seed, where locals chow down on “Griot with Ti Malice & Pikliz,” seasoned fried pork with black beans, plantain fritters, and sweet habanero slaw. • Dinner at Margot Café in East Nashville finds a daily changing menu at a “casual fine dining” venue where the highest accolades fall short in describing just how good this Five Points eatery is. Rustic French and Italian regional fare is on tap at amazingly reasonable prices. • Sip bourbon from one of the largest collections in the country at the Capitol Grille bar in the Hermitage Hotel, the only Forbes Five Star, AAA Five Diamond hotel in Tennessee. LNM

Acme Feed & Seed is where the locals go for “Griot with Ti Malice & Pikliz,” or seasoned fried pork with black beans, plantain fritters, and sweet habanero slaw.

Snapshot photo by wes stearns

P

rofessional architectural photographer and Mooresville resident Wes Stearns snapped this shot of a lone fisherman with his Nikon D200 near Stumpy Creek. “I took this photo because I found that this particular morning offered a unique opportunity to shoot your not-so-typical setting on the lake. I loved that the sun and fog provided for a silhouette of this fisherman, he says. While he focuses mainly on architectural photography, Stearns has had fine art photography featured in the Andre Christine Gallery in Mooresville, as well as in several local and national publications. See his work at www.artisteyephotography.com.
