Talk of the Town The Changing World of Retirement Income Planning: Do You Feel Lucky? Without question, the number one concern of retirees today is outliving their money. But what’s really most important: outliving your money or outliving your income? With pensions being a thing of the past, Social Security in trouble, stock market volatility becoming the norm, and folks living longer, old school ways of thinking about your retirement income plan could get you in trouble if you’re not careful! In my professional opinion, RELIABLE INCOME IS THE KEY TO RETIREMENT. James D. Stillman When it comes to planning for income in retirement, there are a few other questions that need to be asked. How much income do you need? What are your sources of income? Is the income guaranteed for life? Does it allow for inflation? Are both spouses covered? Is it taxable? If it is stock market based, then what will you do if the markets don’t cooperate? Do you want “maybe income” or “guaranteed income”? Have you heard of “The 4% Rule” or “The Prudent Man’s Rule”? Previous studies by prominent investment companies had generally concluded that in order to have a high level of confidence that your assets/income will last for 25 years or longer, you should draw down no more than 4% per year of your portfolio. This assumes a 50/50 blend of stocks and bonds that they say should provide for growth (stocks) and safety (bonds). The problem is that this rule was created in the 1990’s when markets were strong and interest rates were considerably higher than they are now. Volatile markets and low interest rates (like we’re seeing now) have a huge impact on the validity of this rule. Fidelity Investments states - “Generally, a 65 year old may not want to withdraw any more than 4% annually, but that percentage will vary based on market conditions and life expectancy” (fidelity.com-retirement guidelines). Vanguard Group states – “Setting a 4% annual withdrawal rate from a 50/50 blended portfolio is reasonable for most retirees”. However, “if 4% isn’t enough, then consider ways of cutting expenses or consider other alternatives” (vanguard.com-personal portfolio-withdrawals).

T. Rowe Price recently completed a study based on the 4% withdrawal rate (same 50/50 blend). They found that if you retired January 1, 2000, then you had an 89% chance your assets/ income would last for 30 years. That is unless a bear market happened (like 2008-2009)! Then the success rate dropped to 6%! Now, imagine if you got on an airplane and the pilot said the weather was beautiful, but there was a small chance that turbulent weather could affect the flight, so there’s an 89% chance we’ll get to our destination without issue. If the turbulent weather actually did occur, then we’d only have a 6% chance of making it to our destination. WOULD YOU ACTUALLY BE CRAZY ENOUGH TO STAY ON THAT PLANE? I don’t know about you, but I’m off at the 89%, let alone 6%. Call me a big chicken, if you must. If those odds don’t scare you, then either you’re crazy, greedy, or just don’t give a hoot! Yikes! No wonder retirees are confused and scared about whether their money will last. Here’s the bottom line: “old school” retirement planning strategies are outdated, market based, and may not work in the future. They require the markets to trend up for them to work with any consistency. In the last 110 years, if you break out the Dow Jones Industrial average into 10 year increments there are 5 upward decades (positive growth) and 6 flat or negative decades. That’s less than a 50% chance for decades with an upward trend. Imagine if you’re pulling out 4%-5% in those flat or down years. You’re in danger of running out of money and income a lot quicker than you may realize. Remember, market downturns hurt you more than upturns help you, especially when withdrawing money. So, what’s the answer to all this? We call it the “Chart Your Course” retirement income plan. This plan is a laddered portfolio system designed to deliver predictable lifetime income using a blend of cash, guaranteed insurance contracts, and equity based accounts. A 4% - 6% income stream from investable assets is typically achievable. The income (or portions of the income) can be guaranteed regardless of market conditions, and special care is given to protect your income against potential inflation, healthcare expenses, etc. As always, if you would like a free report or free consultation, then please visit our website, give us a call, or stop by the office. And, as always, remember: The purpose of the money dictates where you put it! Until next month, James D. Stillman

It seems like we were just talking about summer finally being here—and now it’s nearly halfway over. I always feel like I have to cram in so many summer activities in July, like it’s my last chance to get in all my summer fun. There’s a dilemma when it comes to Lake Norman and summer activities. There are so many possibilities, but only so much time. We take the guesswork out for you in this issue. For the second year, we compiled a list of 20 reasons to love the lake (page 42), full of outdoor ideas, places to visit, and even where to eat during these last months of the season. Of course the reasons don’t stop at 20, but this is a good list to get you started. Another can’t-miss activity this summer is the food truck rally at Prosperity Village. We heard rave reviews after the first installment back in April, and we had to test it out ourselves (page 55). Check out this month’s rally on July 16. We also have your guide to summer fashion, from cooking out to taking the boat for a spin. The best part—the lovely lake house we used as a location. The palatial home is on the exclusive Governors Island and was built for entertaining. Thanks to LePage Johnson Realty Group of Keller Williams for letting us stage our own pool party (find out how you can make the home yours on page 34). There may not be months of free time left in the summer season, but there’s plenty of opportunity to check a few warm-weather activities off your list. Get out, and enjoy the lake.

Q&A

Kids Helping Kids

A

A kids athletic wear shop may not seem like the obvious place for inspiration to strike, but that’s exactly what happened with 9-yearold Katie Yenichek. She and her mom Julie were in Iviva (the kids version of lululemon) when the third grader from Cornelius saw a group of girls making blankets to give to an area animal shelter. Julie remembers Katie pointing to the tweens, saying she wanted to do something similar. Together they organized a mommy/daughter yoga day and raised money for Catwalk for a Cause—a nonprofit event that helps fight pediatric cancer.

What did you think when she came to you wanting to do something to give back? JULIE: I was so taken aback, so proud of her. That is not what our day was supposed to be like, but I could see the wheels turning in her head. She wanted to do something and she came up with it.

22

lakenormanmagazine.com JULY 2016

by MICHELLE BOUDIN

How did you come up with the idea for a mommy/daughter yoga class? KATIE: This girl inspired me. I saw what she was doing and I also wanted to do something for my mom for Mother’s Day. She’s been saying she wanted to start yoga again, that she needed to workout. I was trying to help my mom and other people at the same time.

You pulled this off in just a few weeks. How? JULIE: Katie really did a lot of the work. She invited her friends and then the owner of the new Yoga on Davidson shop agreed to host and teach the class for free.

You raised $250 and donated it to the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation and its Catwalk for a Cause. (The event raises money for kids with cancer at an annual fashion show featuring kids actually battling the disease.) What made you choose that charity? KATIE: I want people to be treated the way we’re treated. It’s not fair they have to stay

in the hospital, and we get to do whatever we want, so I wanted to help them. JULIE: She knew I was working on Catwalk for a Cause, and she said, “How about we help your friend who helps the kids with cancer?” She’s also seen kids we know who are fighting the disease and they’re her age, so I think she could relate to them.

What was it like to actually see mommy/ daughter yoga come to life? KATIE: It made me feel really happy because I was doing something nice for somebody. JULIE: It was priceless. There is not a gift that could have been better; we all had such a great time.

You must be one proud mom. JULIE: I am forever grateful to the little girls who inspired Katie and I’m very grateful she has sweet friends that wanted to help. She even sent handwritten thank-you notes to everyone who participated. Proud is an understatement. She is already talking about the next time.

Ripe for the Picking by JENN BAXTER

Correll Farms, LLC is a sixth-generation family farm in Cleveland, N.C. They grow over 200 varieties of produce, which they sell at several local farmers markets including Davidson Farmers Market (in the Summit parking lot), Statesville Thursday Evening Farmers Market at Pecan Park, and the Salisbury Farmers Market. Their specialties include fresh greens in the spring and lots of tomatoes in the summer, including Tiger Stripes in a variety of colors. “We love planting new things, and our booth at the markets is ever-changing with new items,” says David Correll. “It is always exciting each week to see what’s ready to go to the market.” Local restaurants serving their produce include Millstone Bakehouse, The Upper Crust, and Kindred in Davidson, Risto’s Place in Statesville, and Sweet Meadow Cafe in Salisbury. Here’s a recipe from the Corrells, using their tomatillos.

Tomatillo Salsa Ingredients: 1 pound fresh tomatillos 1 large onion (about 12 ounces), cut into large chunks (about 3 cups) 3 cloves of garlic 1/2 packed cup chopped cilantro 1/2 of a jalapeno (seeds and all if you like heat) ½ of a lime, juiced Kosher or fine sea salt Directions: 1. Pull the husks from the tomatillos and wash them under cool water until they no longer feel sticky.

2. Cut them into quarters, and put them in the work bowl of a food processor.

3. Add the onion and garlic and process until smooth. 4. Add the cilantro, jalapeno, and lime juice and process until the jalapeno is finely chopped.

5. Scrape the mixture into a small saucepan. 6. Season lightly with salt and bring to a boil over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid is boiled off and the salsa looks like relish, about 15 minutes.

7. Cool before using. The sauce can be refrigerated for up to one week. If refrigerated, you may want to add a little salt and/or lime juice to the salsa before serving.

NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr. and longtime girlfriend Sherry Pollex raised more than $370,000 at their seventh-annual Catwalk for a Cause to support childhood and ovarian cancer research and aid on May 18. This was their first Catwalk since rebranding the Martin Truex Jr. Foundation to focus on ovarian cancer, after Sherry’s ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2014. Proving even NASCAR driver fame can’t compete with the joy and beauty of youth, 11-year-old Natalia strikes a pose as drivers Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Danica Patrick follow her onstage.

The children were the stars of the evening—exactly what Martin and Sherry intended. Charlotte’s WBTV anchor Molly Grantham emceed the event.

6th-Annual Timmy Belcher Memorial Rainbow Kidz Ride & Run Over 300 people participated in the sixth-annual Timmy Belcher Memorial Rainbow Kidz Ride & Run on April 23 to support Rainbow Kidz, a pediatric program of Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County. The event raised nearly $35,000 and included a 5K, 10K, and Fun Run for runners, as well as 10-mile, 35-mile, and 60-mile routes for cyclists. Rainbow Kidz serves nearly 400 children annually through grief groups in 30 schools throughout Iredell County, at no cost to the schools or the families. Cancer survivors Ava and Sherry take to the catwalk, proudly sporting their short locks.

Sherry Pollex and Martin Truex Jr. welcome a sold-out crowd.

Reasons to Love Lake Norman

This year we found 20 new reasons to love the lake. See what made the cut this summer. by PIPER ANDERSON

The View Lake Norman is beautiful in a thousand ways. There are mornings when mist curls off the lake and the water is a sheet of glass. There are days when the water is a brilliant blue and sunlight dances over the waves. There are nights when sunsets trail fire across the sky. Lake Norman’s landscape is just one of many reasons people love the lake. Looking for a good spot to catch the view? Try Davidson Island, off of Davidson College’s Lake Campus.

— Relaxing — “My favorite part about living on Lake Norman is being able to take a nap on my paddle board in the middle of the afternoon while my wife thinks I’m paddle boarding for exercise. You can’t do that in Ballantyne.” —TJ from the 96.1 Ace and TJ Show

North Harbor Club

42

lakenormanmagazine.com JULY 2016

A burger by itself is pretty delicious, sure. But a burger with a side of Lake Norman is a truly singular experience. Fortunately, there are several places on the lake where you can get just that. North Harbor Club is the perfect venue for an elegant brunch while lounging on an outdoor patio. In the mood for something greasier? The Landing Restaurant at Lake Norman Motel is a fun hole in the wall with arcade games and French fries to spare, not to mention a festive Tiki Bar. And of course there’s The Rusty Rudder, with plenty of fish tacos and live music to go around.

Lakeside Restaurants

Charming Main Streets

Historic and quaint, a lovely way to spend a summer afternoon is strolling the streets of downtown Cornelius, Mooresville, or Davidson. In Cornelius, browse through vinyl and vintage furniture at an antique shop and then stop by a fashionable boutique. In Downtown Mooresville, whether you’re sipping a latté at HEbrews or dining luxuriously at Epic Chophouse, you’ll be sure to find something that will enchant you (and we aren’t just talking about the Enchanted Olive). Lined on one side by the historic college campus and on the other by a myriad of shops and restaurants, Davidson’s Main Street is the picture of an American idyll, as well as a foodie’s paradise.

Cruises Whether you spend the day sightseeing on the Catawba Queen or the night dining on the Lady of the Lake, a nice way to relax and take in Lake Norman is on top of one of Queens Landing’s cruise ships. You can also go on party cruises like “Old School Hip Hop” and “Dress in Summer Whites” and dance the night away with dock lights twinkling in the distance. 704-663-2628. 1459 River Hwy., Mooresville. www.queenslanding.com

Fireworks There are a multitude of ways to celebrate Independence Day on Lake Norman. If community is your thing, the Lowe’s YMCA’s annual 3rd of July celebration can be hard to beat. Along with food trucks and live music, the Y puts on a dazzling fireworks display that thousands of people come see. Not to be shown up, on the 4th of July Trump National Golf Club creates a magnificent fireworks show at the club. Come nightfall, hundreds of boats anchor in the cove and visitors wait with eager anticipation for the fiery show.

Birkdale Village A charming haven in Huntersville, Birkdale is a wonderful place to shop, eat, and live. With an inviting atmosphere, Birkdale has such attractions as an AMC movie theater and a Barnes & Noble mixed in with fashionable boutiques and apartments. Between Red Rocks Café, Corkscrew, and Kilwins Fudge, it’s not a bad place to eat, either. JULY 2016 lakenormanmagazine.com

— Well Rounded — “I love the weather here, and the people are particularly friendly. I love the change of seasons, but yet they aren’t too dramatic so that the winters are unbearable. It just ticks a lot of boxes: it’s a growing economy, it’s a strong economy, and there’s a good mix of people from all around the country. It’s a melting pot as far as different Americans from different parts of the U.S.” —Lawrie Lawrence (Lawrie Lawrence Real Estate)

Karaoke Let out your inner diva and sing a few songs at Rivals Grille and Tavern on karaoke night. Along with its Southern charm and hospitality, people are drawn to the many amenities they find here. Like so many others I cherish and embrace that sense of place we’ve come to know in Mooresville.” —Mayor Miles Atkins, Town of Mooresville

Although the skies above were dark and dismal, the mood at the Saturday Night Food Truck Rally in Prosperity Village on May 21 was anything but. The rally, which is part of a new monthly series in the area, is hosted by the Prosperity Village Area Association and the folks at EatFromaTruck.com. “One of the goals of Prosperity Village Area Association is to bring events to the Prosperity Village Area,” says President Theresa Rosa. “[The rally] is a way to bring neighborhoods and people together, a fun way for people to run into neighbors and friends they may not have seen in a while, and a way for people to make

new friends.” So far, it’s been working like a charm. The first food truck rally of the season was held on April 16, with an estimated 3,500 people in attendance. The second rally on May 21 was cut short by threatening weather, but still welcomed about 1,500 enthusiastic foodies who got to choose their fare from a selection of 15 different food trucks. No matter your palate or preference, there is something for everyone to enjoy—from barbecue to seafood, kabobs to Caribbean fare, ice cream to funnel cakes. “I think [food truck rallies] have a lot of success because they

give people the chance to go out with their friends and family, but not everyone has to get the same type of food,” says Christopher “Bebo” Staley, chef and owner of Bebo’s Mac Shack. “Everyone can go to different trucks and order what they each would like and then share.” Staley, who started his Charlotte food truck business with his brother-in-law two years ago, started out offering five kinds of mac and cheese, as well as five types of po’ boy sandwiches. But the mac and cheese was such a hit, they decided to build a second truck that exclusively serves up mac and cheese— Bebo’s Mac Shack.

“Some of our combinations that we come up with are twists on American classics, such as the Hawaiian Mac with country ham and pineapple, [while] others are just a combination of things we know will taste good together,” says Staley. Their most popular item? The “Flank Steak Mac” seasoned with Guajillo chili salt and served with pepper jack macaroni, pico de gallo, and cilantro. It’s dishes like these that keep people coming out to food truck rallies, according to Andrew Melton, owner and chef of Mel’s BLT Kitchen, another participant in the Prosperity Village rally. “It’s a great opportunity to try something out of the box and

Their most popular sandwich, the Avocado Goat Cheese BLT, features bacon, spinach, tomato, goat cheese, and avocado, while the bestseller at the May 21 rally was the Banh-Mi-LT— a concoction of grilled, braised, and seared pork belly, pickled carrots and radishes, fresh cucumber, jalapeno, cilantro, and chipotle mayo. “[The rally] is a nice way to gather with friends or family and enjoy the outdoors with great food, drinks, and music,” says Melton. “What more could you ask for?” LNM

Home Grown Our Towns Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build creates community and develops bonds uniting families and neighborhoods, one home at a time. by MICHAEL J. SOLENDER • photos by LUNAHZON PHOTOGRAPHY

W

When Carmen Cruz moves into her Our Towns Habitat for Humanity home in Cornelius’s Poole Place neighborhood later this summer, she’ll be achieving a dream she never thought possible. “I heard about Habitat for Humanity from a neighbor who was interested in applying for a home,” says Cruz. “She talked me into applying also. One month later, I got the call—I was approved. It has been an opportunity and an experience that I am so grateful for. I get to own something that belongs to me. My daughter can live in a safe environment and have a better life ahead.” Stories like Cruz’s inspire hundreds of volunteers and donors to raise funds, build homes, and provide support through Our Towns Habitat for Humanity, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. With its origins extending back to 1985, Our Towns Habitat builds homes and serves the communities of Huntersville, Davidson, and Cornelius in northern Mecklenburg County and all of Iredell County including Mooresville, Troutman, and Statesville. More than 326 housing solutions have been provided for families in need of safe, affordable housing since Our Towns Habitat’s founding. The home earmarked for Cruz will be the ninth Women Build completed by the organization.

Women Build is Habitat for Humanity’s program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities. The program began with Habitat’s Charlotte affiliate 25 years ago, and to date, there are more than 800 Women Build Habitat homes across the globe. “Women Build is a program about empowering and being inclusive to women,” says Katie Tuttle, Our Towns Habitat volunteer and former Board member. Tuttle has volunteered with the organization for 10 years and has been involved in about 20 builds, including six Women Builds. “It is not about excluding men, it’s about making the experience more encouraging and comfortable for women to get involved.”

No Skills Necessary Tuttle stressed no construction background or skills are necessary to participate. “People will show you what to do,” she says. “If there is something you’re not comfortable doing, we’ll find something that works for you. You’ll meet amazing people and learn new things.” Amy Hartman, Our Towns Habitat volunteer and Board member, echoed this sentiment. “The advantage of a Women Build is that we assume people come without specific homebuilding skills and we take more time up front to say, ‘This is what we’re doing, and this is how we’re

doing it.’” In addition to providing the bulk of the labor for Women Builds, women volunteers conduct fundraising and purchase materials for the homes under construction. Hartman started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity Charlotte in 2004, and her first project was a Women Build. “I showed up the first day and fell in love, and caught the ‘Habit-itis’ and haven’t been able to get rid of it since,” says Hartman. “I fell in love with the learning new skills and feeling of accomplishment you get when you start with 2-by-4s and end up with walls, or you start with no roof and at the end of the day, have a roof on the house. The sense of accomplishment and teamwork is satisfying.” Poole Place in Cornelius is a neighborhood where several Our Towns Habitat homes have been built. “Very often homeowners continue participating in the program and give back by helping build other homes,” says Tuttle. “We have another Women Build homeowner in the neighborhood that comes out and helps on homes because of the connection she’s made to people she knows and wants to continue to give back.” For Carmen Cruz, moving into her new residence will be a welcome homecoming indeed. www.ourtownshabitat.org LNM

Gulf Dreams Adventure and luxury both await visitors to Naples, Florida.

F

Florida’s paradise coast strikes a balance for many visitors. Bordered on the east by the Everglades and on the west by the Gulf of Mexico (complete with white-sand beaches and oceanfront manses), Naples is situated in a pristine location to explore the best of Florida. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, Miami is only 90 minutes away. To get the most of your stay in Naples, look for accommodations on the luxurious 5th Avenue. This stretch of the city is known for its designer shops, art galleries, and topnotch eateries. The prime spot to book a stay is at the Inn on Fifth (www.innonfifth.com), located mere blocks from the sand and right in the middle of the action. The exclusive locale is a Forbes 4-star and A A A Four Diamond Inn. The original building is home to 119 guest rooms, a spa, fitness center, courtyard pool, and the inn’s restaurant, Avenue5 (www.avenue5naples.com). For the

64

lakenormanmagazine.com JULY 2016

ultimate indulgence, book one of the Club Level Suites, housed across 5th Avenue in a private building. The Club Level amenities include complimentary snacks and drinks all day, including breakfast, hors d’oeuvres, and happy-hour cocktails into the evening. All visitors booked in the Club Level also have access to the rooftop hot tub and deck. Each suite features a contemporary design with splashes of red and black, and a balcony—try to get one overlooking 5th Avenue South, where the palm trees are decorated with string lights after dark. The personal concierge is available to make your stay a breeze, from making reservations to driving you to destinations. The inn’s restaurant, Avenue5, should not be missed. Armed with an extensive wine selection and a menu dotted with local catch, Avenue5 easily impresses. Executive

Executive Chef David Nelson offers a varied menu at Avenue5 including Seafood Bouillabaisse, Filet of Beef au Poivre, and Loch Duart Scottish Salmon.

Chef David Nelson was hired at Avenue5 in 2015, after decades in the industry, and nearly 10 years in Florida. The ceviche, with white fish and bay scallops, is a palate pleaser topped with avocado-serrano mousse. Fish here comes two ways, simply prepared or as a signature dish. Those who don’t enjoy seafood aren’t left out—there’s a selection of prime cuts available, including the Niman Ranch Wagyu Short Rib and the Aspen Ridge Prime Delmonico. While in Naples, be sure to spend an evening at Osteria Tulia and neighboring Bar Tulia (www.osteriatulia.com). Start with dinner and wine at Osteria Tulia. This rustic eatery features a large outdoor seating area and a cozy interior with exposed

66

lakenormanmagazine.com JULY 2016

brick walls, banquette seating, and traditional wooden chairs that you may have around your own dinner table. The menu features dishes made with local ingredients, exuding the fresh flavors of traditional Italian cuisine, and, of course, Chef Vincenzo Betulia made sure to include house-made pastas. Don’t skip the wood-charred octopus appetizer. Served with Umbrian ceci beans, celery, and a chile mayo, this dish can turn most octopus skeptics into firm believers. Specialties here include Heritage Pork Osso Buco served with herbed spätzle and caramelized sprouts and the house-made torelloni with roasted beef short rib, foie gras emulsion, and marsala. Look out for

the specials made daily. After dinner, head next door to Bar Tulia, the sister gastropub. This joint has a speakeasy feel and the sophisticated cocktails to match. The bar menu features flavors found on Osteria Tulia’s menu, but suited for the casual setting of the bar (and perfect for sharing). The cocktail menu is separated into three sections: craft, classics, and all spirit. But there is a fourth option: let the bartenders make you something not on the menu. Tell him or her the kind of alcohol you prefer, the style of drink, and enjoy. As for the drinks on the menu, The Stanchez and The Pinecone are favorites, featuring house-made syrups and tinctures.

Naples is ripe for those who enjoy the outdoors. Head 40 minutes east into the Everglades to Wooten’s Airboat Tours (www.wootenseverglades.com). This quintessential way of traversing the Everglades gives you an up-close look at the environment, including creatures like herons and crocodiles. For a more relaxed afternoon, head five blocks west to Naples Pier and beach (www.naplesdowntown.com/ naples-pier.htm). Relax under clear-blue skies with plenty of the beach strand to yourself. The summer months may actually be the best time to visit this destination because it’s the offseason. Enjoy lower rates, fewer crowds, and plenty of time to take it all in. LNM

Snapshot photo by CANDICE TRIMBLE

N

ature photographer Candice Trimble was visiting Lake Norman when she snapped this serene photo of a forested cove using her Canon Rebel T3i. “I really enjoyed the views of the water but, most importantly, appreciated the few moments of tranquility it gave me,” Trimble says. “It’s a

great place to vacation or even spend a few hours. I’d recommend this place to anyone who’s looking for some time with Mother Nature and the great outdoors.”
