Talk of the Tow n Mutual Funds: Alternatives Do Exist! s most of our readers already

know, we’ve been doing a series of articles on the pros and cons of mutual fund investing. This month’s article will focus on a few mutual fund alternatives that are available today. As we’ve stated in our previous articles, mutual funds are very beneficial in certain cases, such as investing with smaller amounts of money or making 401k contributions. While they may be a good tool for many investors, studies have shown that the majority of wealthy investors choose not to invest using mutual funds. So, what do they invest in James D. Stillman instead? A recent survey done by TIGER 21, a member’s only club of entrepreneurs, executives, and money managers, found that their typical investment portfolio at the end of 2013 looked like this: 23% stocks, 21% private equity, 21% real estate, 14% bonds and fixed income, 8% hedge funds, 1% commodities, and 11% cash. While that’s little changed from the year earlier, there has been a significant shift among the wealthy toward private equity and away from fixed income since mid-2011. Of course, most normal folks don’t have the resources to invest like the big shots mentioned above, so what can you do? You could develop your own portfolio of individual stocks, bonds, exchange traded funds, master limited partnerships, fixed income alternatives, REITs, etc. Most folks are just not skilled at choosing the right allocations, market sectors, when to move in or out of positions, or how to set up the portfolio to control risk. So, what’s an investor to do? GRADUATE TO SMAs – An SMA (Separately Managed Account) is a portfolio of assets under the management of a professional investment firm. In the U.S., these firms are called registered investment advisors, or RIAs. Like mutual funds, SMAs provide access to professional money management and diversification. At the same time, they provide the following benefits: Potentially lower overall expenses Compared to mutual funds, many of the costs of ownership—such as marketing fees and tax costs—may be lower in the SMA structure. Tax efficiency Since an SMA is composed of individual securities with an individual cost basis, your institutional manager can use this information to control the amount and timing of gains and losses. He can employ strategies such as tax-loss harvesting to reduce the overall tax drag on your portfolio. Customization Because your institutional investment manager is choosing individual securities, you can choose not to invest in certain companies or certain sectors of the market. Virtually any investment requirement can be satisfied. Because you will be working with an investment advisory representative (IAR), the concepts of

shelf space, soft dollars and commissions will become less important. Your IAR will help you design the best portfolio possible, tailored to your needs—rather than one that is just “okay”. Control the maturity of your bond portfolio Especially today, when interest rates are near historic lows, it may be more important to control the overall maturity (or duration) of your fixed-income portfolio, as well as have the ability to adjust quickly as market conditions change. SMAs can help you achieve that. Transparency The owner of an SMA can see everything that happens, including trading costs and any other deductions from their principal investment. This is not always the case with other investment vehicles. A tested and effective investment strategy SMAs have been around since the 1970s. They were developed to accommodate larger clients who needed to meet specific objectives that did not fit the mutual fund structure. Technological changes have made it possible for investors to access SMAs with as little as $10,000 to $25,000. As of 2012, there was more than $2.7 trillion invested in SMAs in the U.S, and the amount is growing. Morning Star Inc. found that SMAs outperformed mutual funds in 25 of 36 stock and bond market categories for not only 2008, but also 2006, 2007, 2010 – 2012. One reason SMAs may be outperforming mutual funds is that individual SMA strategies tend to have smaller amounts of assets than popular mutual funds, allowing them to trade more nimbly. As always, if anyone would like additional information on SMAs, or any of the other strategies we’ve discussed in the past, just give us a call, shoot us an email, or drop by the office.

Until next month,

James D. Stillman

Editor’s Note

H

Hello! My name is Katie Coleman and I’m the new editor for Lake Norman Magazine. I’m originally from the North Carolina coast and have a professional background in regional publications, much like this one. I’m excited to explore the communities surrounding Lake Norman and plan on spending quite a bit of time getting to know this beautiful area and the people that make it a one-of-a-kind location. If you have any questions or comments about the magazine, please contact me. I want to hear from you—this is, after all, your magazine. Welcome to our back to school issue. This time around, we’re all about the kids and those who shape their lives. Look for profiles on standout students from the Lake Norman area (page 34) and the This time around, story of one Davidson mom who, amongst other things, is we’re all about the kids and modernizing cotillion classes (page 30). If you’re looking those who shape their lives. for one last vacation before the kids start classes, pack up the family and head to The Homestead Resort and Spa in Hot Springs, Va. Schedule spa treatments that utilize the Virginia hot springs while the children have a blast exploring the outdoors with the KidsClub offered by the resort (page 58). In the coming months, we’ll be starting a new series highlighting small towns that are worthy of a day trip, and first up is Hickory. Our September issue is all about the arts, with a preview of the fall arts scene around the lake, a profile on an art group that utilizes sustainable practices, and a look into how some local talent sell their wares online. While Lake Norman is a pleasure all year long, this is the last month of true summer vacation. Take advantage of these final weeks of relaxation—and enjoy the issue!

While the start of a new school year may mean the end to family camping trips and time spent outdoors, this doesn’t have to be the case. Ensure that you and your family can spend plenty of time exploring nature during the school year with Woodland Discovery, a nonprofit organization that provides outdoor activities for children and families. With a site at Harris Lake off Poplar Tent Road in Concord, Woodland Discovery offers classes for preschoolers, enrichment classes like yoga, afternoon courses that focus on art and science and the habitats around Harris Lake, as well as family memberships and nature clubs. The family memberships offer open access to the Harris Lake property, either by appointment or during the scheduled access times on the second Friday nights from 6-8 p.m. and fourth Sundays from 1-4 p.m. Family memberships last the entire year. Woodland Discovery also offers two nature clubs, one for families and one just for the kids. Memberships to either club run from February through May, or September through December. The family nature club allows you to join other families for exploring outdoors with activities provided by Woodland Discovery, and are scheduled on second Saturdays from 2-4 p.m. The kids nature club is meant for ages 5-10 and include a morning exploring outdoors and does not require parents to stay. Join the kids nature club on the fourth Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon. www.woodlanddiscovery.org

Brew Stash Bash The U.S. National Whitewater Center threw the ultimate summer bash with a picturesque venue, live music all afternoon and plenty of cold craft beer. The 3rd annual Brew Stash Bash American Craft Beer Festival was held on Saturday, June 14. Some participants kicked off the festival by running in the Brew Dash 6K, a race through the USNWC trail system. Nearly 750 people participated in the race this year. Awards, provided by NoDa Brewing Company and Mountain Khakis, were presented to the top three male and female finishers in 10 different age categories. The festival officially started after the race with craft brew tastings from some of the best-known local and regional craft breweries, including Big Boss Brewing Company, Foothills Brewing, Catawba Valley Brewing Company and NoDa Brewing Company. Live music entertained the crowds gathered around the River Jam Stage featuring The Whiskey Gentry, John Stickley Trio, The Lower 48 and a headlining concert by Robert Earl Keen. With no shortage of sunshine, epic ‘staches and tasty beverages, a good time was had by all.

Mooresville-South Iredell Chamber of Commerce members were able to have breakfast and network – all before heading into the office to start the work day. This month the event was held on Wednesday, June 11 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Mooresville. Sylvia Spury, community development manager and event coordinator with the MSI Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber offers Business Before Hours, Coffee Hour, MidDay Mingle Lunch, After Hours and more than 12 ribbon cutting, grand openings and anniversary celebrations each month. “The average attendance at an MSI Chamber networking function is between 60-80 people, and by providing numerous opportunities at different hours during the work week, we have found that this allows folks the flexibility to attend at least one function each month – whether it be breakfast, lunch or after hours,” she said. “As an advocate for more than 800 chamber member businesses and non-profit organizations, it is important that we offer opportunities for them to promote and grow their business.” Chamber businesses can also choose to host some of these events. In addition to member functions, the chamber also compiles an online community calendar of events spanning the Mooresville-South Iredell area.

Curry Celebrity Classic Dell and Stephen returned to Davidson on Monday, June 16 to host the 4th annual Curry Celebrity Classic Golf Tournament at River Run Golf Club in Davidson. This year, the tournament raised more than $75,000 for the center. The tournament teams were comprised of one celebrity and three amateur players. Celebrities this year included Anthony Tolliver with the Charlotte Hornets, retired NBA player Al Wood, NFL players Nate Clements and Victor Jones and Coach Bob McKillop of Davidson College. The tournament was made possible with the help of ACN, Bojangles, Carlisle and Gallagher Consulting Group, Chiquita, G&W Equipment, Hendrick Automotive, Ivester Jackson Distinctive Properties and Mountain Stream Appraisal.

Peninsula Yacht Club Poker Run One of the largest events for the Peninsula Yacht Club, the annual Poker Run, was held on Saturday, June 14. Those that didn’t participate in the run were able to board the Yachta Yachta Yachta, the spectator boat and one of the stops on the run. The massive vessel included a DJ, free hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar. The event raised $500 for the Davidson-Cornelius Children’s Development Center and $500 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lake Norman. The event closed that evening with a dinner where the winners were announced, and dancing and live music on the lawn provided by Too Much Sylvia.

John P. Campbell Memorial Tournament The 20th annual John P. Campbell Memorial Golf Tournament swung into action on Wednesday, June 18 at Mallard Head Golf Course in Mooresville. This year the tournament raised $26,151 and benefits the Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County (HPCIC), which is celebrating its 30th anniversary as Iredell County’s only non-profit hospice. The tournament attracted more than 200 community golfers, making the memorial tournament the largest one-day tournament held in Iredell County. The event is named for John Piece Campbell, a Lake Norman resident who became a supporter or Hospice of Iredell County after witnessing the care of his brothers who died of esophageal cancer. Campbell developed Mallard Head Golf Course and hosted the tournament to raise awareness and support for HPCIC. After his death in 2006, Campbell’s family continued to donate all fees and services to the hospice on the day of the tournament. Winners of this year’s tournament include Hayley Hammond and Kevin Hammond (1st Flight), Chip Weddington and Josh Weddington (2nd Flight), John Kowalcik and Alba Robinson (3rd Flight), and Rosmary Marci and Jennifer Sibole (Ladies Flight). With the help of all sponsors, including Mooresville Ford and Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, the 20 tournaments have raised more than $500,000 for HPCIC.

Modern Day Manners A Davidson mom creates a cotillion class for the new age by Michelle boudin

W

When Aimee Symington sent her daughter to cotillion classes she was hoping the then sixth grader would get an education in southern hospitality. Not so. “I was mortified,” Symington says. “They weren’t learning table manners, or cell phone and social media etiquette. They were teaching the kids things that were just not relevant today. She was learning how to behave in a receiving line and how to respond when handed punch and cookies.” When neither mother nor daughter were impressed, the Davidson mom of two, took matters into her own hands, using her expertise as a business etiquette and customer service trainer, and created her own class.

“Impressions” is a three-day class that will be taught at Charlotte area country clubs on consecutive Sundays for fifth, sixth, and seventh graders. It’s a twist on traditional cotillion that includes basic manners without the old fashioned stuffiness. Everything from teaching kids to make small talk, properly greet others, and even how to dance the shag and the waltz. Impressions is just Symington’s latest foray into Emily Post’s world. The founder of Finesse Worldwide, a company that specializes in social skills training, she has appeared on the Today show as an etiquette expert and created the board game “Blunders” in 2006 (a fun and interactive way to teach kids manners that’s used in homes and classrooms) that has been sold at Toys R Us since Kathie Lee Gifford called Blunders one of her favorite things on the Today Show. The Impressions classes will be taught this fall and Symington is hoping to eventually offer the classes nationwide. She’s convinced kids everywhere need this kind of manners training as much as they need a soccer coach and SAT prep classes. “Parents these days put too much emphasis on their kids getting top grades, and not enough emphasis on social skills. If a kid is not able to make a good first impression, have good table manners, carry on a conversation… it honestly doesn’t matter how smart they are, they’re not going to get a job or get promoted. We need to teach this to them…I feel we need to get back to some of these basics to really help them with their future.” Somewhere Emily Post is smiling. Politely, of course. Top of the Class Five local students go above and beyond when it comes to academics, community service, and ambition. by leah hughes • photography by Grant Baldwin

It’s no secret that Lake Norman is home to great schools and exceptional students. For the back to school issue, we decided to highlight five standout students at various high schools. From Miss Vietnam of the Carolinas to the Kicks for Kids founder, read ahead and get to know some of the area’s top students.

Ansley Rikard The squeak of a tennis shoe on a hallway floor is an important sound to Ansley Rikard. In 2013, the organization she cofounded raised $8,000 and bought 108 pairs of tennis shoes for underprivileged children. “We personally put the shoes on the kids’ feet,” Rikard says. Rikard, a 17-year-old rising senior at Southlake Christian Academy, started Kicks for Kids with her friend Emily Wakeman. The nonprofit organization promotes health and fitness by providing shoes and athletic equipment to students at Brookstone Schools in west Charlotte. The nonprofit Christian school is designed for children from low-income families living in the surrounding urban area. Rikard remembers visiting Brookstone when she was in middle school to sing for the children and make gingerbread houses with them. “We’re doing something in our backyard,” she says. “It’s so tangible. You can see the effects of what you’re doing.” This past April, about 100 runners participated in the second Kicks for Kids 5K. The event raised about $3,000, which went toward physical-education equipment at Brookstone Schools. “I’ve learned a lot about myself,” Rikard says, “but also about the community and the area, [about] being selfless and serving these kids. They deserve it.”

Rebecca Nguyen Rebecca Nguyen sits on the couch just inside the door of Bally Nails in Huntersville. She follows the World Cup match on TV while she takes a break. The 17-year-old works fulltime in the summer here at her mom’s nail salon. “I don’t mind working,” she says. “My parents have always owned their own businesses just to take care of me, my brother, and my sister. … I like to help them back.” Before Nguyen begins her senior year at Hopewell High School this fall, she’ll travel to Vietnam with her family. Her grandparents and parents are Vietnam natives. Although she barely remembers her most recent trip to Vietnam as a firstgrader, Nguyen actively honors her Vietnamese heritage. She helps organize festivals and participates in volunteer opportunities with the Vietnamese Association of Charlotte. A few months ago, she won the title of Miss Vietnam of the Carolinas. “I really do embrace it,” Nguyen says of her multicultural background. “I know some people try to forget about it, but I really don’t want to forget.” At Hopewell, Nguyen enjoys art and math classes. She plans to combine those skills with her entrepreneurial upbringing for a career on the business side of the fashion industry. “I want to be someone like my dad,” she says, “who’s worked toward being a leader.”

Simone Lindsey Simone Lindsey thinks ahead. A year ago, she decided to stop dancing competitively. She started dancing when she was 3 and began competing at age 7. “It was the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life,” she says. “I feel like it was great while it lasted. I just didn’t want to move on through that and then always wonder what it would have been like if I had stopped.” With her extra time, Lindsey began working as an intern with Charlotte Seen, which produces several fashion events including Charlotte Fashion Week and Passport For Fashion. Lindsey, a 17-year-old at North Mecklenburg High School, loves fashion. At 5 feet 7 ½ inches (without her heels), she enjoys modeling, as well as working behind the scenes. On a typical weekday at her internship, she sports electric blue high heels, red lipstick, and a high-waisted skirt. In addition to her International Baccalaureate courses, she also took an elective apparel class last year and is a member of the school’s fashion club. Although her senior year is just starting, Lindsey applied to the Savannah College of Art and Design this past February. “The culture is really rich, and it’s really artsy,” she says. “It’s tailored to me and what I want to be and what I want to do.”

Sam Kastel Sam Kastel is fast. His lean frame and digital watch offer a couple of clues to his pastime of choice. This summer, he attended a distance-running camp in Brevard. The rising freshman will be a member of Davidson Day School’s varsity cross-country team again this year. In January, he’ll travel to Orlando, Florida, to run the Walt Disney World 10K. When Kastel learned about his friend Logan Brady’s cousin who died from neuroblastoma at 8 years old, he didn’t waste time coming up with a way to help. Kastel, 14, created The Harrison Nichols Run to raise money for the Harrison Nichols Foundation. The organization provides financial assistance to neuroblastoma sufferers and their families.

This past March, the third-annual 5K event raised about $2,000. Kastel credits teachers, parents, and other students with helping make the event a success. “Oh geez,” Kastel says when asked about the most challenging part of the process. “Getting started ahead of time and scheduling for meetings.” Kastel draws inspiration from his dad, who competes in IRONMAN events, and his mom, who ran the Boston Marathon in 2013 and 2014. “I’m looking forward to moving up,” Kastel says of starting high school. “Looking forward to things actually counting toward college.” Although it might not show up on a transcript, Kastel has a good start on doing things that count. august 2014 lakenormanmagazine.com

Via Savage This summer, Via Savage was in school. She took three classes a day, participating in challenging classroom discussions and analyzing politics and current events. She lived in a dorm in Winston-Salem. The rising senior at William Amos Hough High School initially agreed to attend the Governor’s School of North Carolina because she knew it would look good on college applications. But once she arrived at Salem College and began her courses and met her peers, she enjoyed it. “When I came into the Governor’s School setting, I expected to make a few acquaintances,” Savage says. “But I’ve been blown away. People are so intelligent and interesting.” At 17, Savage isn’t sure about her college major, but she has two requirements for the school. The first is a good music and arts program. Savage plays guitar and piano and began writing songs in sixth grade. She uses music as a creative outlet and a way to push herself. “I always get a little bit nervous before I go onstage,” she says. “It drives me to do it more. My goal is to become comfortable with it. It helps me with my confidence.” Her second college requirement is that the school is located out of state. She’s lived in downtown Davidson her whole life and is ready for a change. Her top two choices are the University of Southern California and Columbia University. “At some point I want to experience a city setting,” Savage says, “But ultimately settling down in a small town is probably the way to go.”

Rachel Bringewatt, Class of 2014 Rachel spent her years at Davidson Day School crafting a learning experience unique to her interests and college aspirations. A straight-A student, she challenged herself by taking multiple AP courses as well as a one-on-one microbiology course with her biology teacher. Rachel excelled outside the classroom as well. Her passion for biology and community service led her to offer a middle school biology class to homeschooled students, as well as volunteering at a local elementary school. As the Varsity Girls Basketball captain, she led her team to the state finals and received the Female Sportsmanship award. As she explored her college opportunities, Rachel was named a Morehead-Cain Semifinalist, a Science Scholar at Richmond University, a Park Scholar at NC State, and a Kenan Scholar at Elon University—each of which represent more than $100,000 in funds for college. Rachel will attend the University of Richmond next year, and we will be proud to watch the next phase of her education unfold.

Hidden Gem Tucked away in Sherrills Ford, Lineberger’s Cattle Company has all the qualities of a traditional steakhouse—and then some. by jenny brule • photos by Anna naphtali august 2014 lakenormanmagazine.com

Lineberger’s Cattle Company has been Lake Norman’s go-to restaurant for juicy, char-grilled steaks for 45 years. After nearly a half-century, their popularity is showing no signs of slowing down. We visited on a Saturday evening. Arriving at 6:30 p.m., there were already groups of hungry, happy people waiting patiently for a table. “On weekends, we’ll turn the tables three times a night,” owner Ralph Starling states. Considering the restaurant seats 300 people at one sitting, that is a serious number of steaks they are grilling to order. But it’s not just the prime and choice steaks that have people lining up—it’s the seafood, sides, appetizers, desserts, and impressive salad bar that the throngs of loyal customers pay testament to. Ralph Starling and his wife Janice bought Lineberger’s from Milton Lineberger 15 years ago. Both work at the restaurant every night it’s open—Ralph walking the floor, chatting with customers, picking up a stray dish here and there, while Janice greets guests at the front door. “We do anything that needs to be done,” Janice relates. And while the Starlings are willing to jump in, they’ve hired and retained staff with the same ‘can-do’ work ethic. Phyllis, a server, has been at Lineberger’s for 28 years and Donna, who works up front with Janice, has been there 15 years. “The average

employee has been with us around seven years,” Ralph Starling relates. In the restaurant business, keeping employees for this long is practically unheard of. The interior of Lineberger’s is rustic and fun with tinned detailing, weathered window panes, and loads of antlers hanging from the walls. The clientele is multigenerational and made up of groups of friends, extended families, and couples. Even though the restaurant was packed, service was fast and attentive. We started with a nightly special of scampi (plump shrimp, cooked in a gorgeous, white wine and butter sauce, $9.99), Texas Howlers (Lineberger’s take on cheddar-filled jalapeño poppers that are perfectly balanced between spice and creamy cheese, $7.99), and Fried Hot Pepper Rings (spicy and lightly fried until crisp—served with a creamy Creole sauce, $6.99). They were all delicious, but our favorite was the Texas Howlers. If you go to Lineberger’s with a group, order lots of the appetizers for the table to share. A trip to the salad bar comes with every entrée. It is quite possibly the best managed, cleanest salad bar we’ve ever had the pleasure of indulging in. Lineberger’s uses as much local produce as possible and makes many of their dressings from scratch (tip:

the house-made chunky blue cheese dressing is to die for). Although they are known for their prime rib (with several different size cuts), we were hankering for char-grilled steaks. We ordered a 7-ounce filet mignon ($25.99) and a 12-ounce rib-eye ($24.99). The steaks are grilled ‘Chicago style’ over gas-fired grills with hickory wood chunks. Chicago style means that the heat is intense, creating a wonderful crust on the outside while leaving the interior super juicy and flavorful. We ordered both steaks medium-rare with the garlic/black pepper rub. The filet was served with a mushroom Marsala sauce, which was a nice complement to the steak, and the rib-eye was served without any sauce (which it didn’t need). Garlic mashed potatoes and a baked sweet potato (huge and filled with butter and brown sugar) accompanied our steaks and were delicious. Although we were tempted by dessert (the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cheesecake looked unreal and the Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae sounded ridiculously decadent) we simply couldn’t eat another thing. Lake Norman is lucky to have such a steak house. Lineberger’s steaks rival even the big city boys like Ruth’s Chris, but thankfully, not in price. www.linebergers.com LNM

Colorful Elegance A Lake Norman couple opts for color in their new home by blake miller • photography by Dustin Peck and Madison Weaver

I

It all began with a piece of fabric. When Traci Zeller laid eyes on the Kravet fabric boasting an array of colorful blues, greens, and lavenders, the Charlotte-based designer knew she had found her inspiration for her client’s brand new, custom home in Davidson. “That fabric really set the tone for the whole home’s design,” explains the Charlotte-based designer. That color palette layered atop a neutral base—a signature look of Zeller’s—was a departure from her clients’, Sharif and Maggie Metwalli, previous home, which had a much more traditional aesthetic incorporating deep reds, yellows, and browns. This time the couple

44

lakenormanmagazine.com august 2014

wanted something more colorful and fun to fit into the modernized Colonial home architect Blake Ramsy of R&R Designs had designed with the help of Zeller and builder Chris Knight of CM Knight Fine Homes. “It’s a clean, updated traditional,” explains the designer. “It has classical roots, but is made for a modern family. Great flow, wonderful, open spaces that make it really modern and current.” To achieve the neutral-meets-color aesthetic the Metwallis were hoping for in their new home, Zeller began layering textured neutrals such as seagrass and

46

lakenormanmagazine.com august 2014

patterned sisal rugs with more colorful draperies like those in the great room, a combination of linen and lavender from the AERIN Collection for Lee Jofa. “It was wonderful because Maggie isn’t afraid of color,” says Zeller. “There are not a lot of homeowners who are willing to do a lavender drape.” Zeller also wanted to play up the architectural details she, Ramsy, and Knight had collaborated on such as the stained wood beams in the great room and the wide bead board ceiling running the length of the dining room, great room, and keeping room, not to mention the

adjacent kitchen. So as not to overshadow these details, Zeller opted for complementary light fixtures such as the Oly Studio piece in the great room—“I needed a center fixture that would stand up to the beams. It’s like artwork.”—and the oversize lanterns by Visual Comfort in the kitchen. The kitchen, however, is one room that remained wholly neutral amongst an array of color elsewhere. “If we’d done something out of the box in the kitchen, it would’ve forced me to carry that throughout the whole space,” says Zeller of the decision to remain neutral. “But I wanted to give the family more flexibility and longevity going forward.” Quartzite counters give way to polished glass white subway tiles and glazed off-white custom cabinetry by Walker Woodworking while custom counter stools and dining chairs from Wesley Hall are swathed in durable, complementary Crypton fabric. Since moving in, the homeowners haven’t changed a thing about the design in spite of its dramatic departure from their previous home, says Zeller. “It’s so gratifying to get an email from a homeowner about how comfortable and elegant [their new home] is. That’s really what makes my job worthwhile. I just feel so good when the homeowners are so happy.” LNM

Terra Firma Cornelius artist Jessica Singerman’s work connects her with her love of the land. by Michael J. Solender

B

By 8 a.m. most days Jessica Singerman has already logged in three solid hours of painting, a morning ritual she began nearly two years ago after her son, Noah, was born. Quietly working in her garage home studio, Singerman’s solitude is punctuated only by the morning chatter of NPR. The nearby baby monitor advises her when her little guy is ready to start his day. “This is a new beginning for me,” Singerman says of her daily work routine. “Making work every day is what I’m supposed to be doing. It’s spiritual and how I need to connect with being an artist while balancing time with being a mom.” Singerman’s approach to her work and her outlook on life brings a broad perspective as a product of a bicultural upbringing. Her mother is French and her father is American. She grew up in Davidson where her dad taught French at Davidson College. His stints leading exchange and foreign study programs, found Singerman spending entire school years in France while growing up. She knew at a young age she wanted to be an artist. She received her undergraduate degree in studio art from William & Mary in Williamsburg and her MFA in painting at the University of Delaware, where she also served on the faculty. Singerman also taught drawing and computer graphic art at Salem College in New Jersey. Though away for some years from academia, she sees herself returning to teaching in the future. “Being in a place is different than traveling there,” said Singerman, who noted that the “rootlessness” of her bicultural upbringing has been a great influence

on her work. “Sense of place is something I’m acutely aware of and has spurred me to find a greater sense of connection with the land around me.” Singerman describes her most recent work as abstract land paintings. She’s careful and deliberate in differentiating them from landscapes. “Landscapes infer a ‘window’ on a scene that’s being viewed,” said Singerman. “Conversely ‘land’ evokes for me an integration of me being part of the work, a feeling, it’s really a verb. I’m not viewing what I’m painting, it’s part of me and I’m part of it. I connect in a similar way when I’m cycling, it’s visceral. It feels corporal.” At 34, Singerman has strung together a number of life experiences to bring her creative talent onto the canvas. She’s studied in Italy, taught drawing to students barely her junior, lived and worked in Australia, and led guided bicycle tours throughout Europe and back country roads throughout the U.S. Her work offers explosions of color, form and light conjuring imagery of motion and depth. Upon close inspection, viewers may find figurative imagery, elements not present by accident. “I often work figurative components into my work,” said Singerman, whose process involves building up the base of canvas with acrylic and then moving into oil paint. “I don’t like to over think it, I like to let go when I paint and see what comes out.” LNM

Jessica Singerman’s show will open August 14 for one month at ‘Fresh Tide’ at the Neighborhood Theater in NoDa. www.neighborhoodtheatre.com Singerman is represented locally by the Providence Gallery. A special exhibition of her work will open beginning October 10 for one month. www.providencegallery.net More information: www.jessicasingerman.com

Arriving at the Omni Homestead feels like a trip back in time—more specifically, an elegant voyage to the gilded age of travel. The storied resort, nestled in Virginia’s misty Allegheny Mountains, welcomes guests with its signature brick tower rising from perfectly manicured grounds. Step across a rocking chair-lined front porch and into the white-pillared Great Hall to complete your entrance to its pastoral-meets-opulent charm. While the Homestead’s historic grandeur means it’s the perfect destination for an upscale retreat or weekend getaway (it’s only a four-hour drive from Lake Norman), the resort’s more recent additions also make it one of the region’s most family-friendly destinations.

Originally constructed in 1766 as a lodge near the area’s hot springs, the modern building dates from closer to the turn of the 20th century when investors including J.P. Morgan began construction. The famed hotel has welcomed 22 American presidents onto its more than 3,000 acres, which include the state’s oldest ski resort, an ice skating rink, championship golf courses, and a lavish Europeaninspired spa. History and modern amenities blend seamlessly here where high-ceilinged guest rooms are decorated in traditional fabrics and antique furniture, and afternoon tea and biscuits are served in the Great Hall. Take a peek out one of the oversized windows and onto the lawn, where children and families mingle in the grass and around roaring fire pits in the cool mountain air. The resort’s outdoor activity list reads like a kid’s camp brochure with hiking, fishing, horseback riding, tennis, archery, and even falconry being offered on the grounds. But on warm days, you’ll find most families around the resort’s new playful two-acre water park, which features a lazy river, slides, and a sandy beach. And plan on splurging on one of the private cabanas where parents can relax in the shade as children splash in the nearby pools. For the ultimate in relaxation though,

Kids can get in on the fun here too with fun features like the Sparkles Manicure or Pink Bubbles Pedicure for guests ages 5 to 13. One of the top spots on the resort for families is actually its elegant Main Dining Room. While the regal ballroom setting and business formal required attire may initially make parents wary, the live music and large dance floor prompt families of all ages to swing and spin around to tunes post dinner. For a more modern dining experience, visit the newer Jefferson’s Restaurant and Bar. The neighborhood consists of 21 single family 2-4 bedroom homes with communal green space, gardens and is located near Mooresville’s historic downtown district. For more information, visit www.ourtownshabitat.org.

include: Anthony Roberts, Cornelius Town Manager; Tim Stein, Co-owner of Maestro Travel; Chris Hailey, director of the Criminal Justice Center at Central Piedmont Community College, and John Hettwer, president of Payroll, Plus Inc. Each participated in and graduated from a leadership program and have excelled in their field of occupation emerging as community leaders for the Lake Norman region. www.lakenormanchamber. org.

Awards Ballas Chiropractic Whole Health Wellness Center was named the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce milestone member of the month this past July, and was also awarded the 2014 Small Business of the Year. Ballas Chiropractic has been in business in the Lake Norman area since 2003 with chiropractors Dr. John J. Ballas, Dr. Tyler Slabaugh, and Dr. Jessica Slabaugh, along with a physical rehabilitation specialist, massage therapists, office administration, and an event staff. The business works with many local charities and annually hosts Lake Norman’s largest food drive (for The Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen and The Ada Jenkins Center) and coat drive (through Lydia’s Loft in Huntersville). www. ballaschiropractic.com.

Partnerships The Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce partnered with the Mooresville-South Iredell and Greater Statesville Chambers of Commerce to bring together the three health forums in the greater Lake Norman region. The Iredell health forum in Statesville, the Mooresville-South Iredell health forum in Mooresville, and the Lake Norman health forum in Huntersville all participated in a regional collaborative healthcare summit. The event gave citizens and business leaders a unique opportunity to hear CEO presentations from Novant Health, Iredell Memorial Hospital, Piedmont HealthCare, Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, and Davis Regional Medical Center. www.mynchealth.org.

W

hile on the way to dinner at the Blue Parrot—by boat—with family and friends, 11-year-old Mooresville resident Paula Tripiciano Kelly captured this shot of the Marshall Steam Station. She didn’t have her Nikon with her, so she snagged this shot with her iPhone. “The way the steam from the Marshall Steam Station appeared to merge with the clouds, along with the sunlight streaming through the clouds was so amazing,” she says. “I could not resist trying to capture it on film.”
