Talk of the Town

Is This The Perfect “Investment” Nobody Knows About? Over and over we hear folks complain about how sick and tired they are of banks paying virtually no interest on savings accounts, checking accounts, and CDs. You definitely need to have a certain amount of money safe and liquid, but it seems like you just can’t make any reasonable return on that money. We often like to say that there has been a war declared on savers and conservative investors. And man, is it ever frustrating! Unfortunately, it looks like this is not going to change anytime soon. James D. Stillman So, what are we supposed to do? Well, the insurance industry has come up with a very attractive alternative that may be the ultimate “Christmas gift” for some of you. Imagine an account with the following benefits: • Your principal can be safe and guaranteed (subject to the claims paying ability of the insurance company). • Your account can be fully liquid at all times (100% access to your account). • You have a very reasonable expectation to earn 4% - 8% average return over time. • No income tax is assessed on earnings until you withdraw your money. Much like an IRA plan, the earnings are tax deferred. • Increased tax-free transfer to your beneficiaries at death (they pay no income tax at all). • Long-term care benefits can be included. Wow! That sure sounds like a pretty nice list of benefits for you to enjoy. But, like anything else, there have to be some strings attached, right? Well, you would be correct. There are a few strings attached. First, what I’ve just described is a type of life insurance called “Single Premium Life - Option C”. You make one single deposit and then you can’t add money to it after that. Because it’s life insurance, the first “string” is that you must be insurable to some degree. Now, you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to qualify. You just need to be insurable to some extent. The rating you receive will impact the cost of insurance and will determine the level of death benefit the policy must have to qualify under IRS rules for life insurance.

The second “string” is that there is no guarantee on how much interest you might earn from year to year. You may earn 0% one year and 20% the next. Indexing strategies are used to determine the rates of return each year, and once money is credited it cannot be lost due to market activity. Over time, after expenses, you can reasonably expect to earn between 4% - 8%, but it could be higher. Over the past 20 years, the average annual rate of return has been between 7% - 8% with this type of policy. The final “string”, as previously mentioned, is that you do have some cost of insurance expenses each year (after all, it is life insurance). In this type of plan, they are typically minimal, but none the less they are there. Depending on how you structure the policy, the cost of insurance could bring your accumulation value down in a year where your indexing strategies return 0%, or they could have no impact on the value. It depends on the product and how you set it up. Sample - $100,000 deposit, 60 year old male, standard non-tobacco rate. The death benefit would be approximately $250,000. You could expect to earn an annual internal rate of return after expenses of 4% - 8%. Your cash value is always 100% liquid (no surrender charges), if you die your heirs collect the $250,000 income tax free. Alternately, you could use a portion of the death benefit for longterm care, if ever needed. What the heck else do you want? When all is said and done, given today’s low interest rate environment, these new “hybrid” life insurance plans are becoming a very popular alternative to keeping “dead money” in the bank. We consider it another asset class that simply is not used enough. As always, if you would like more information about these strategies, any of our free reports, a free consultation, or a quote - just give us a call or shoot us an email. Don’t forget to listen to “The Safe Harbor Retirement Planning Show” every Saturday morning at 10:00am and Wednesday morning at 8:00am on WSIC radio 1400AM, and 100.7FM. Or visit the radio tab on our website for all the uploaded shows. Merry Christmas Everyone, James D. Stillman

Editor’s Note

I

It’s hard to believe December is already upon us. It seems like when the first fall holiday hits, the season is in full swing and there’s no slowing down. I think slowing down during the holidays could help us all appreciate things more—from

the heartfelt gifts to family time to our regular haunts where we know people by name. It certainly isn’t easy, with last-minute gifts, hosting out-of-town guests, and planning the next get-together. My hope is that this issue gives you some inspiration to take a break from the hectic holiday schedule and enjoy where we live. First, we have our annual gift guide. This year it’s based on style, making it easy to pick out the perfect present for a late addition to your shopping list. Kristy Tolley gives the run down on five regional groups whose products give back to the community—from a bakery that employs survivors of human trafficking to socks that benefit veterans (page 50). Instead of featuring a new eatery this month, we decided to visit a community staple, Bob’s Grill. This walk-up diner is more than a place to grab a bite before work. The owners have created a local hub in Mooresville (page 57). uled down to the minute. Be sure to schedule a minute or two just for you.

Cheers to Charity

Greg Biffle, driver of the No. 16 car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will participate in a night of music, food, and fun this month at Ass Clown Brewing Company in Cornelius to support his foundation and its efforts to help animal-welfare groups nationwide. Jenni Leibee, development director of the Greg Biffle Foundation, gave us the lowdown on the organization and brewery event, which will feature a special beer Biffle helped create. —Jenn Baxter

What is the mission of the Greg Biffle Foundation and how does it give back to the community?

Why did the Biffles choose animal welfare as the platform for their foundation? Greg was inspired by the love of his own dogs, as well as the stories of thousands of mistreated animals across the country. He started the Greg Biffle Foundation in 2005 to create awareness and serve as an advocate to improve the well-being of animals by engaging the power and passion of the motorsports industry.

Greg recently made a beer with Ass Clown Brewing Company. How did that collaboration come about? Ass Clown Brewing Company wanted to collaborate with the Greg Biffle Foundation to support its efforts with animals and give back to a local organization. The idea of a special beer crafted with Greg’s help and a

NASCAR driver Greg Biffle. night where he could interact with his race fans and animal lovers alike was a way to do this. Both organizations want to help animals in need, and we knew this would be the perfect event to do so.

What is the new beer like? The beer is a nice, smooth, light, and refreshing blonde ale. Ass Clown Brewing Company created a great name and a really fantastic label for this beer. We are excited to reveal it with them on Dec. 4.

When it’s released on Dec. 4, there will be a special event held at the brewery. What will it include? The event will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, at Ass Clown Brewing Company in Cornelius. The event will be from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., with Greg guest-bartending from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There will be an opportunity to donate to the foundation when

patrons close out their tabs, and we will have some great raffle prizes, T-shirts, the NASCAR Pets Calendar, and Greg’s special beer available for purchase. Greg will also be available for autographs throughout the event. There will be live music and food trucks. Greg is thrilled to be partnering with Ass Clown Brewery for this great night of fun while also bringing awareness to the important issues of animal welfare and his foundation.

How will funds from the event be used? There are countless animals across the nation without loving homes. Many of the shelters that house these animals struggle each year with obtaining financial assistance to provide for the pets until a suitable home can be found. Donations from this event will be used to help these rescue groups meet essential daily and medical needs for these animals, and continue to help them to work toward a brighter future for the animals in their care. www.gregbifflefoundation.com

Tami Pope

The Greg Biffle Foundation raises money to award grants to animal-welfare groups across the country on an annual basis. In addition, the foundation works to educate the public on the benefits of spaying and neutering pets, and serves as an advocate for the unwanted and abandoned animals nationwide who do not have a voice. Grants are awarded for projects that assist with spay and neuter efforts, veterinary and medical expenses, shelter supplies, transportation for animals that would be euthanized to no-kill shelters where they can be adopted, and more. Since its creation, the Greg Biffle Foundation has awarded grants to over 700 humane societies and animal shelters, from coast to coast.

Speak of the Devil by jenny brule

These aren’t your typical deviled eggs. Instead of cold eggs made hours before a gathering, this crab-filled version produces a warm and crispy appetizer sure to impress your guests. And even though these deviled eggs have been taken to the next level, the recipe is easy enough for anyone to make.

Warm, Crab Cake Deviled Eggs Ingredients: 6 hard-boiled eggs 2 teaspoons chopped chives 1 ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard 2-3 tablespoons mayonnaise ¼- ½ teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning 4 ounces refrigerated “special” or “claw” crabmeat ¼ cup Panko breadcrumbs Butter

28

lakenormanmagazine.com december 2015

Preparation: 1. Slice eggs in half and carefully scoop out cooked yolks and place into a bowl; save the cooked egg whites. Mash yolks together with chives, Dijon, mayo, and Old Bay. Taste and season with salt, if needed. Then gently stir in crabmeat. Don’t fill the egg whites until ready to serve.

2. When ready to serve, fill the egg whites with crab mixture and flatten. Push the filled eggs into the Panko breadcrumbs to coat the filled side. Heat the butter in a sauté pan over medium heat until it froths. Once the frothing has subsided, add the eggs six at a time, breadcrumb side down. Sauté gently for about three minutes; keep warm as you sauté the second batch. Serve warm and crispy. Makes a dozen filled eggs.

A small brigade of 30 dogs and their owners braved the rain at the fifth-annual Pawz Too Run on Oct. 10. They will help save lives as their support will help build a Pet Education & Adoption Center. Sponsors and vendors welcomed the crowd at the Community Vendor & Adoption Fair which promoted health and wellness for pets and their owners. Adoptable dogs were on site, and one puppy found its forever home. Even Scooby Doo came out. Funds raised will help Friends of the Animals build a state-of-the-art facility to save more homeless dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens in the greater Lake Norman region. Due diligence is underway now on a new site location. Founder Joanna Copio, celebrating her 19th birthday that day, came by, as did Davidson Mayor John Woods, Cornelius Mayor Pro Tem Woody Washam, and FOTA Board President Maria Haughton.

More than 80 golfers played in the Fore the Animals Golf Tournament on Oct. 20 at Larkin Golf Club in Statesville. No one drove away with the Chevrolet Camaro from the Randy Marion Hole in One contest, but everyone walked away having enjoyed the gorgeous fall day. And a few walked away with prizes. Thanks to sponsors and golfers, the event raised well over $9,000 for Friends of the Animals.

Changing the Present Five local ways to shop differently this year. by Kristy Tolley • photos by LunahZon Photography

Holiday shopping often consists of trolling the local mall or chain stores without putting much thought into the gift itself. This year, consider buying something that will not only thrill the recipient, but also make an impact on our community. With everything from sweet party treats to handmade treasures, mark your holiday shopping list off at area charitable organizations. Here are five to get you started.

Mooresville Arts Formerly named the Mooresville Artist Guild, Mooresville Arts provides a great opportunity to support the local artisan community. Varied and distinctive works created by artists from Lake Norman, Mooresville, Concord, and Charlotte are housed in The Depot on West Center Avenue. Peruse the gallery for pottery, jewelry, original paintings, notecards, and other handcrafted goods. In addition, shoppers can enjoy extended hours through December

and snag a deal during the “Give the Gift of Art” holiday sale. “We’re excited to host a reception for this sale and for our featured artists,” says Jessica DeHart, a Mooresville Arts member. “Everyone is welcome to stop by Friday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m.” Mooresville Arts also offers painting classes for adults and children, summer camps, and a variety of workshops throughout the year. www.magart.org

Neet’s Sweets Be the dessert hero at your holiday party or family gettogether with Neet’s Sweets. Fueled by her desire to escape human trafficking and support herself financially, Antonia “Neet” Childs turned to baking. Creating confections and empowering young women in her community through decorating classes became her passion. “A girl in our class suddenly stopped coming,” says Childs. “I found out later she had been recruited into prostitution. She was in the sixth grade.” Profits from Neet’s Sweets help fund her organization, Market Your Mind, Not Your Body, which provides transitional housing, crisis care, and other survivor-led assistance. “The bakery employs girls in the program who have a passion for culinary arts,” says Childs. “It’s the foundation to show girls they can do anything despite their situation.” The menu includes treats such as red-velvet cakes, coconut cream cupcakes, and cherry cheesecake cookies. Seasonal delicacies, such as sweet potato pie and pumpkin pie are customer favorites. www.neetssweets.com

Boldfoot Socks Hoping to create a business with both a profit and a purpose, Brad Christmann tested the waters by launching a Kickstarter campaign about a year ago. Boldfoot Socks quickly received over 500 backers. The company’s mission embodies two passions close to Brad: veterans and American-made products. Several of Brad’s family members served in the military, and the number of homeless veterans disturbed him. “It breaks my heart to see so many Americans come back from serving our country to worse financial and personal situations than when they left,” says Christmann. With each Boldfoot Socks purchase ($15 a pair), a portion of the proceeds goes to programs that help veterans find jobs, secure housing, and improve their healthcare options. In addition, the socks are completely American made—from the sewing and dyeing to the marketing and distribution. Visit their website for limited-edition Christmas socks and holiday sales. www.boldfoot.com

Our Towns Habitat for Humanity ReStore Stalking friends’ Pinterest boards is an ideal way to brainstorm for memorable gift ideas. By repurposing items from the ReStore, you can create gifts that are unexpected and one-of-akind. With three area locations—in Mooresville, Cornelius, and Statesville—there’s plenty of stock to work with. You’ll find everything from holiday knick-knacks and jewelry to furniture and home décor pieces. You’re not only helping the environment by recycling and reusing, but your purchase makes a difference, too. ReStore profits help build safe and affordable

housing for area residents. “It’s a great way to give back to the community and give something distinctive for the holidays,” says Lynne Priestley, the ReStore’s marketing and communications director. Don’t fancy yourself the crafty type? No worries. The Up-Do Crew, a local group of DIY specialists, can do the work for you. Their Pinterest board is laden with their own repurposed creations available for sale in each ReStore location. www. ourtownrestore.org

Cuisine It’s family; we’re more than just a hole in the wall.” —Cindy thompson, owner

Walking into Bob’s Grill in downtown Mooresville, you would never suspect how significant this small, unassuming restaurant is to this community. But for nearly 25 years, Bob’s has been a staple in the morning routine of teachers, city workers, students, and parents alike. Owners Cindy Thompson, Patti Bell, Chip Atwell, and Mac Atwell like to treat their customers as an extension of their own families— and it shows. They know everyone’s name and usually what they’re going to order. Thompson said the walk-up diner is treated as everything from a meeting place to a lost and found. “It’s family; we’re more than just a hole in the wall,” says Thompson. “People who are getting their lawns landscaped will drop off the money with us because they know that the workers will be in there later. Things like that make us still feel like we’re as small as ever, like we’re still hometown Mooresville.” That feeling of cozy comfort pervades everything about Bob’s Grill. The menu hasn’t changed much since the restaurant opened, and everything is still under $5. This gives customers a feeling of familiarity when they come in, as do menu items ranging from Cheerwine to Coca-Cola in glass bottles, livermush sandwiches to hamburgers made to order (like everything else). When people want something that reminds them of home, they go to Bob’s. You can see the love that this town has for this grill by the amount of people packed in the tiny space. On busy days like

Bob’s Grill has all the charm of a traditional diner, including Coke-bottle salt shakers and a black-and-white tile floor. The women behind the business serve up counter staples like made-to-order bacon cheesburgers with toppings piled high.

Not much has changed since the diner opened nearly 25 years ago. Handwritten tickets are still the norm and everything is still under $5.

Thursday, when they throw a new tasty special into the mix, Thompson says up to 200 people will walk through their doors. And keep an eye out for the regulars. You’ve got the “morning boys” who start to pull up at 5:15 a.m. (Bob’s doesn’t open until 6 a.m.) and Forbush High School Principal Eddie Karricker, who says he usually comes in and simply asks, “Mama will you fix me some breakfast?” Karricker calls when he leaves home in the morning, and picks up his breakfast on the way to school. “It’s always a surprise,” he says. Newcomers love the charm and classic menu. People

come from all over the area to taste the simple, Southern options for breakfast options, which the owners say is the most popular meal of the day. “We’ve had everyone from newscasters who are covering stories in the area to NASCAR drivers and even people who are working on movie sets nearby,” says Thompson. “I like to think my regulars are out there talking us up.” So, if you’re looking for somewhere to become your regular spot where everyone becomes family, this is it. And chowing down on a delicious made-to-order burger covered in mustard, homemade chili, and coleslaw in the process? That’s just the cherry on top. LNM

A League of Its Own Lake Norman Little League started small and has quickly expanded to meet the needs of the community—all with the help of volunteers. by Katie Coleman • photos by Justin Driscoll

“We were behind once. We came back to tie it up,” says head coach Tim Buck to his AAA division River Dogs during a chilly weeknight game. The fall baseball season was about a week away from wrapping up, and the team—comprised of players between the ages of 6 and 10—was behind by four runs. The kids tried to rally. When their team was up to bat, those in the dugout chanted for their teammates. They were reminded to start chewing their “good-luck gum.” Unfortunately, the game didn’t turn around for the River Dogs. It’s in these moments that the whole point of Little League is evident—the players on both teams exhibited sportsmanship, respect, and teamwork, and had fun despite the loss. But don’t be fooled; Little League is serious business. The teams play for championship titles, and in the spring and summer, All Star teams are formed. These teams compete in district championships and then move on to state championships. The best of the best make it all the way to the Little League World Series. Lake Norman Little League has had success. Over the summer, both the

6- to 7-year-old All Star team and the 7- to 8-year-old All Star team won the district championships for their age groups and went on to the state championships. With success like that comes rapid growth. The league started in 2011 with four teams and two coaches. This fall season, the league had 32 teams. From fall 2014 to fall 2015, the league grew by 100 kids. Turnout for the spring 2016 season is estimated to be about 55 teams, with 10 to 12 players per team. “Some guys wanted to see better options for the kids in the area,” says Glenn Jones, the president of the league’s board of directors, about the beginning of the young program. Lake Norman Little League was formed from several existing leagues. The founders wanted a unified group, rather than just pitting one lake town against another. Little League has a few missions including promoting good citizenship, teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect. “Our focus continues to cater to the kids who won’t play in high school or beyond, but they have the chance to learn a sport and be on a team,” says Jones. The league is steadily growing—with nearly 600 players—and is still entirely run by volunteers. At the

64

lakenormanmagazine.com december 2015

moment, the league has 125 volunteers who have all been approved after background checks. Volunteers hold every role, including head coaches, assistant coaches, scorekeepers, pitch counters, concession stand workers, and team moms. Some volunteers continue to help even after their kids are out of the program. Tim Buck, also a member of the board of directors, says that Bill Hill, one of the founders of the league, continues to help out. “He became a role model to kids who may not have had one,” says Buck. “He’s a role model to me.” While the league has had major growth, there are a few hurdles. “The challenge we face is that we’ve built a reputation as a great league, so we have an influx of kids and need more facilities,” says Jones. “Everyone thinks there’s going to be a slowdown, but there never is.” Even with multiple fields at six different parks, there’s still not enough space for practices and games for all the teams they expect to have. The league has started a committee to see what it would take to build their own ball fields. “Our growth is now,” says Jones. “We can’t take 10 years

waiting and have to turn kids away. That’s the last thing we want. I’d hate to see a kid who wants to play get turned away.” While baseball grows for Lake Norman Little League, they’ve decided to add another option: softball. Cornelius already had a softball league, and that has now been incorporated into Lake Norman Little League. The leadership from the Cornelius league is staying on and is now part of the board of directors. There’s plenty for the public to do to help the league continue to provide a place for kids. The most important act: volunteer. As the league grows larger, it needs more volunteers. You can also support through sponsorships, buying merchandise, and even just attending a game. The league is there for the kids—go watch them play ball. Find out more about the league and how you can help at www.lakenormanlittleleague.org. LNM december 2015 lakenormanmagazine.com

Caribbean Charm

With everything from rugged rainforest adventures to bike rides through historic sites to cocktails by crystalline waters, Puerto Rico offers the carefree getaway you crave—no passport required.

I

If a tropical getaway is your perfect antidote to holiday stress, a trip to the charming shores of San Juan, Puerto Rico could be just the ticket. The island—and its centuries-old architecture, sparkling waters, and tropical rainforests—is just a three-and-a-half-hour nonstop flight from Charlotte and one of the most affordable beach escapes in the Caribbean. Another perk: Your travel prep is minimal. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, the dollar is the local currency and you can leave your passport at home. And though Spanish is one of the official languages of the island, so is English, and most tour guides, shop owners, and locals are more than happy to oblige. Here are a few local attractions you won’t want to miss.

Verde Mesa Savor an afternoon or evening at Puerto Rico’s first organic, farm-totable restaurant, nestled on a quiet street in Old San Juan. Business Update Awards For the third year in a row, the Lake Norman Carefree Boat Club won the “Customer Service Excellence” award at the annual Carefree Boat Club conference, an honor given to clubs with the highest level of member satisfaction and customer service. They also took home the “Outstanding Performance” award, beating out around 40 other clubs for this national recognition and becoming the first club to win both prestigious awards two years in a row. Davidson College’s Professor Emeritus of English Tony Abbot received the North Carolina Award, the state’s highest civilian prize, on Nov. 12. Created by the General Assembly, the North Carolina Awards recognize those who have made significant contributions in the fields of fine arts, literature, public service, or science. The San Francisco native attended both Princeton and Harvard, and began teaching at Davidson in 1964. He has written seven

volumes of poetry and two novels, and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1989. Davidson-based Ingersoll Rand received accolades recently from the North Carolina chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. The company was recognized for its innovative performance solutions and systematic integration of sustainability standards. These achievements were acknowledged in two of four categories: the Thomas Edison Award and the Talking Walls Award for small commercial buildings. One of the main goals that helped the company attain this recognition was its effort to reduce its greenhouse gas refrigerant footprint by 2020.

Acquisitions Mooresville-based Larry Powers CPA, PLLC has purchased Payroll, Inc., a full-service payroll and accounting firm. They have kept the previous business completely intact saying,

“Nothing has changed except the name.” Powers has worked in the accounting field for 38 years, and has owned his own CPA practice, which specializes in personal tax preparation and operational consulting, since 2005.

Ribbon Cuttings The Fairfield by Marriot at 9230 Harris Corners Parkway has reopened its doors. They held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in October and are excited to welcome visitors once again to the Lake Norman area. A new restaurant, The Harp & Crown Pub and Kitchen, is holding its grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony Dec. 2. The proprietors, Christina and Christopher Phillips, were the former owners of Restaurant X in Davidson, and are excited to meet all of their new neighbors and customers. — Compiled by Claire Kuhlkin. ave Richardson captured the full moon from his dock in Denver with his Canon 5DMk II and a Canon 100-400L Telephoto Zoom. He said the photo reflects the view he has from his family room, minus the trees. “I’m constantly reminded of how fortunate my wife and I are to be able to live in a place surrounded by such beauty in our day-to-day lives,” says Richardson. “Taking photographs is my way of attempting to preserve and remind myself of that.”
