Talk of the Town

An End of Year Review, and Happy Holidays! Wow! Where did the year go? Seems the older I get, the faster time moves. Maybe it’s because Kelly and I have kept quite busy this past year. We hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving and got to spend some time with family and loved ones. Now that the boat is put away for the winter and the year is coming to an end, it’s time for our annual review of the articles we’ve published this past year. All of these articles are uploaded to our website for anyone who would like to read them. I would like to personally thank all the kind folks that have complimented us James D. Stillman on the articles or have called the office to schedule a visit to learn more about some of the things we’ve discussed over this past year. THANK YOU! We truly appreciate it. So here we go with a quick review of this past year’s articles. January 2014 – Reverse Dollar Cost Averaging: What the Heck Is That? - This article discusses the dangers of drawing down assets from a market based portfolio during retirement. If markets turn ugly and you’re taking money out, it doesn’t take long to dig a hole you may never recover from. We call this “asset erosion” and don’t advise it with your total portfolio. February 2014 – How Annuities Can Create Lifetime Income - I’m a self professed “annuity geek”. Why? Because I believe they are a vital tool for guaranteed retirement income planning. In this day and age, folks need to develop their own pensions from their 401(k)s and IRAs. Annuities are the only investment vehicle that allows you to do this. The trick is to do it right! March 2014 – Beware of the Current Bond Bubble. Is It About to Pop? - Here we discussed how bond prices are at historic highs because interest rates are at historic lows. Without question, we are in a bond bubble; it will pop as soon as interest rates start to rise. It’s not a matter of “if ” it’s a matter of “when”. Are you properly prepared?

April - July 2014 – Mutual Funds: Are They a Thing of the Past, and Are They Right for You? - This was a four part series about the pros and cons of mutual funds. These days, there are very good alternatives to mutual funds. August 2014 – Mutual Funds: Alternatives Do Exist! - This article discussed the alternatives to mutual funds available today. September 2014 – What Is a Fiduciary Standard, and Why Does It Matter? - Here we discussed the different types of advisors available in the financial services industry, how each one is regulated, what compliance standard they must adhere to, and why it matters to you. October 2014 – Buying Annuities and Deciphering Annuity Company Ratings - This article discusses in detail how company ratings matter, but it’s not the only thing that determines how solvent or strong any insurance company really is. For anyone deciding on any insurance product, I highly recommend you read this article. November 2014 – The Power of Life Insurance for Legacy Planning Anyone who has IRAs, thinks taxes might be going up in the future, and is concerned about leaving a legacy to their family needs to read this article. It explains how life insurance can be a valuable tool for estate planning and to help with IRS tax burdens, especially for IRAs! So there you go! A whole year wrapped up on one page. If anyone has anything they’d like us to write about, just shoot us an email or give Kelly a call and we’ll be happy to do so. Don’t forget to listen to “The Safe Harbor Retirement Planning Show” every Wednesday morning at 8:00am and Saturday morning at 10:00am on WSIC radio – 1400AM and 100.7FM. As always, if anyone would like any of our free reports, a free portfolio stress test (cost & risk analysis), or a free consultation, just shoot us an email or give us a call. MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS, AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! Until Next Year, James D. Stillman

Editor’s Note

H

Happy Holidays! This is one of my favorite times of the year, aside from the chilly weather. Not for the shopping, presents, or even the festive decorations, but because I get to spend time with family. And, most exciting of all, I get to spend whole days in the kitchen cooking for others. I don’t know if there’s much I enjoy more than finding or creating a new recipe, and then sharing my dishes with anyone with a spare spoon or fork (one of my favorite family recipes is on our website this month). December is the month of giving to friends and fam-

ily—and to the less fortunate. My giving has always been with food. Growing up, my family made full Christmas dinners and delivered them to families that needed a little help. And I’m sure my parents got pretty tired of me dirtying an entire kitchen just to make some new recipes

December is the month of giving to friends and family— and to the less fortunate.

for our friends. Everyone gives in his or her own way, and we highlighted that in our issue this month. Writer Jenn Baxter profiled five local charities that give to the communities all year long; not only when it’s fashionable to do so. Learn about the Mooresville Christian Mission, Solace for the Children, Serenity House, My Breast Friend, and the Ada Jenkins Center, and what each of them do to help families and individuals around the lake (page 46). For those still left on your holiday shopping list, gift expert Simone McDowell has compiled our exclusive gift guide, featuring items for him, her, and the kids (page 41). To really get in the winter spirit, take a journey down to York County for fun activities like apple picking and live music (page 52). Looking for one last getaway before the year ends? Take a short drive to Asheville and stay in one of the many cozy bed and breakfasts. But be warned—these are not the doily-covered B&Bs you remember. The new age of inns includes meals with locally sourced ingredients, custom maps for jogging and hiking, and even cocktail hours (page 70). Whatever your plans are for soaking in the season, enjoy the last month of the year, and don’t forget to go out with a bang!

Sharing Secrets “During the holidays, families dust off those passeddown recipes and make signature dishes for family gatherings. My family is no different. Most of us have our own take on shrimp and grits, and it’s become a staple since I was in high school. For the first time, I’ve written down my version and am sharing the recipe on our website. Enjoy good eats this season— from my family to yours.”— Katie Coleman, Editor

Pottery Barn Pinspiration Pottery Barn at Northlake Mall helped us out with staging the perfect New Year’s Eve tablescape for Simone McDowell’s story on page 60. We created a Pinterest board of all the items we used, and it can be found at tiny.cc/potterybarn. Use it as inspiration for your own soiree, or click on the pins to buy your favorite pieces.

Turn it Up Planning to host a New Year’s Eve party this year? Be sure to check out our guide on page 60. From decorating to food and drinks, we have you covered. We even made a New Year’s Eve playlist on Spotify that can be found at this link: www./tiny.cc/NYEplaylist. Happy New Year!

Handling Holiday Parties This year you have decided to host a gathering of your friends or have marked your calendar for a spectacular soiree or two. Pamper your guests. It’s always polite to go above and beyond to make sure that your guests are taken care of. Remember less is more. Don’t over think entertaining or bite off more than you can chew.

Have a town car service on standby for guests that may have over consumed and shouldn’t drive home, and make sure you entertain all of your guests’ senses from great foods, drinks, things to see, cool linens to touch, and entertainment.

Tame the tipsy. Drinks will be plentiful, but one can place their own two-drink maximum on their consumption and don’t try new spirits. Stick with what you already know. You should absolutely bring a gift for the hostess! It’s a great gesture for the invite. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive; it could be their favorite wine, a box of chocolates, a candle packed in a pretty box, or flowers already in a vase.

Even when you only know the host, challenge yourself to make new friends. Before arriving at an event, set a goal to make at least two new friends. Simply walk up to someone, tell them you don’t believe you’ve met them before, and introduce yourself with a confident handshake and a smile. Many people are hesitant to strike up a conversation with someone they don’t know, so if you initiate that first step, it’s likely the other person will appreciate it and be open to chatting with you.

National Debut M

ark Fields, 18 and a senior at William Amos Hough High School, has been selected to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The defensive back will make his national debut during the live event next month on NBC at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015. The bowl game is in its 15th year, and has become the nation’s premier high school football game, with past games featuring prominent players such as Andrew Luck, Patrick Peterson, and Jamaal Charles. U.S. Army All-Americans are announced on a Selection Tour, where five teams travel across the country to invite all 90 players and 125 marching band members to participate. Fields received his invite in October in a ceremony at his high school in Cornelius. Of his selection, Fields said, “It’s awesome because it’s something I always wanted to do. Growing up watching the older guys, and being able to play in this game now that I’m a senior is awesome.” www.usarmyallamericanbowl.com

Save a Life Golf Classic Approximately 100 golfers took part in the first Save a Life Golf Classic, that was held on October 6, 2014 at Trump National Golf Club in Mooresville. The event benefitted LifeShare Of The Carolinas, a regional organ procurement organization that serves 44 hospitals throughout southwestern North Carolina. LifeShare is expected to receive more than $20,000 from the event, which will be used for their public education programs, as well as to heighten awareness of the need for more organ donors. Nationwide, there are close to 124,000 people on the waiting list for an organ transplant, including about 3,300 who live in North Carolina.

Jennifer Dills and Ben Martin were responsible for selling the mulligans, raffle tickets, and specials of the day at the inaugural Save a Life Golf Classic. Both are employees of LifeShare Of The Carolinas.

Helping Hands These local charities give to others all year long. by JENN BAXTER • photos by LUNAHZON PHOTOGRAPHY

D

December is often seen as the month of giving. For our Giving Issue, we decided to showcase a few of the charities serving the Lake Norman area that choose to give to others—not just during the holiday season, but throughout the year.

Mooresville Christian Mission When the Mooresville Christian Mission was established by local community churches in 1939, little did they know it would go on to become the oldest non-profit in the Lake Norman area. What started out as an effort to provide clothing and food to those in need has grown to a multi-faceted organization that is dedicated to fighting poverty on an individual level. “Each family is unique in their challenges and what they need in order to become independent,” says Megan Lynch, development director. “It is not a one size fits all solution.” The mission aims to provide dignity, not dependency, by giving their clients the skills, tools, education, and support they need to get out of poverty. Currently, the Mission serves more than 5,000 local families and offers a variety of programs that include financial literacy, transitional housing, crisis assistance, mentorship, and job skills. In addition, they operate a food pantry that distributes more than 48,000 pounds of food per month. “We are working to break the cycle of poverty and help local families, especially the children, have a better, self-sufficient life,” says Lynch.“If we can come together as a community to lift these families up with the skills, tools, education and support they need to rise out of poverty, we will make Lake Norman a better community for all.”

Serenity House The end of one’s life should be a time of celebration and love, dignity, and respect. Hospice services often help families provide this environment. But with today’s constantly changing family dynamic, having a family member around as a full-time caregiver is not always an option. “Hospices call us when they have a patient whose family has become overwhelmed or exhausted and need to be moved from the home,” says Cheryl Pletcher, Executive Director. Both Serenity House of Mooresville and the recently opened Serenity House of Huntersville have a home-like atmosphere with a kitchen, living room, and two private bedrooms for residents. Volunteer staff are on-site 24 hours a day and take over family care for patients with a one to three month prognosis. “The care is generally simple,” says Pletcher, “like taking care of someone sick at your house. Our families are appreciative of the attentive care and feel the love. The care comes from the heart.” Both Serenity House locations operate through private donations and do not accept insurance or government subsidies such as Medicare. Instead, the average resident receives approximately $18,000 in donated care provided by volunteers, staff members, and hospice nurses. “We were recently told by a patient’s daughter that the family felt they had won the lottery of love when their mother was admitted to Serenity House,” Pletcher says. “Our entire mission is to give every family that same experience when they enter our doors.”

Solace for the Children Solace for the Children doesn’t just help to heal children’s bodies—they heal their hearts as well. The non-profit organization that started as Lake Norman Children’s Relief, brings 20 to 25 Afghan children to America each summer to live with host families for six weeks. While they are here, they receive much-needed medical care for a range of conditions from cleft palates and clubbed feet, to heart defects and prosthetic limbs. The services, that are not available in the child’s home country, are provided to them free of charge by physicians, specialists, and hospitals in the Lake Norman area. “By reaching out our hand of help, we are sending the message of love and compassion to all; we are one people living in one world,” says Sandy Tabor-Gray, host mother and Lake Norman branch coordinator. The children also attend social events and participate in team building games that focus on trust, friendship, kindness, and acts of service to others. An experience that’s almost as important as the medical care, since many of them come from warring tribes and have prejudices to overcome about one another or Americans. “My children now have a better understanding, as do I, of a people that have generally been portrayed in the media as our enemy, [but] really want the same things for their family as we do,” says Tabor-Gray. “They laugh like we do, cry like we do, hurt like we do and love like we do.”

Shamsiya, Latifa, Farida and, Sandy Tabor-Gray.

Sher Jan originally came over for surgery on his two clubbed feet but when he arrived it was discovered he had a heart defect that first needed to be operated on. He had open heart surgery then continued on with two consecutive foot surgeries. Children arriving at the airport

Faizal and Ajebullah (also known as “Scrappy”) Faizal was burned in a house fire and received plastic surgery on his foot (allowing him to wear shoes) and back. Ajebullah came from a displaced refugee camp of 10,000 people, 2000 of which are children.

Farrah Dixon and Tempi Wilkinson

My Breast Friend “I felt like I was giving myself a death sentence.” That’s what Tempi Wilkinson thought to herself as she approached her very first mammogram at the age of 37. Although it was just a baseline mammogram and actually an empowering step for her own health, she says it didn’t feel that way. Instead, the whole experience felt sterile and left her feeling anxious and scared. It was a feeling she didn’t want other women to go through. “I want women to be excited to get their testing by making it a girls’ day out experience,” says Wilkinson. Which is just what she’s done with ‘My Breast Friend,’ a non-profit organization she started in June 2014 with her friend, Farrah Dixon. At least twice a year, My Breast Friend hosts free events that include swag bags, food, drinks, vendors, and guest speakers who give out important information regarding the mammogram process, breast cancer, and the importance of early detection. Most importantly, women have the opportunity to get their mammogram done in a comfortable environment, with their best friend and a glass of wine at their side, by visiting the Novant Mobile Mammography Unit parked just outside each event. “I want to encourage women to look forward to [their mammogram], while encouraging the special women in their lives to do it too,” says Wilkinson.

Ada Jenkins Center No one is safe from crisis. And the Ada Jenkins Center wants to be there if and when it strikes. “Most people arrive at Ada in some sort of active crisis,” says Georgia Krueger, executive director. “Our role is to meet them in the active crisis, help to stabilize the situation, and then when the person is ready, move into a partnership with one another to work toward stability.” More than 20 different services are offered to meet a range of crisis needs, including a free medical and dental clinic, a food and clothing pantry, academic and social skill classes, fitness classes, case management, and financial assistance. They also maintain active partnerships with area organizations such as Davidson College, Loaves and Fishes, Lydia’s Loft, and Crisis Assistance Ministries. “We are able to offer an integrated approach both internally as well as with our external partners, making it much easier to provide the assistance needed,” says Krueger. Their integrated delivery of health, education and human services also allows an individual or family to enter through any portal, but receive comprehensive support in every area where they need help. “The Ada Jenkins Center and other agencies in our area work together to support fragile members of our community,” says Krueger. “It is a joy to be allowed to walk with [them] as they make massive changes in their lives.”

Small Town Getaways The fourth installment in our five-part series on charming small towns.

SOUTH FOR THE DAY York County in neighboring South Carolina offers visitors a bounty of activities during the cooler months. by KEIA MASTRIANNI

T

Though we love a good trip to the mountains, there is much to see in both Carolinas. This time, we head south across the Carolina border to visit a few of the towns that comprise York County. Approximately 50 miles from Uptown Charlotte and the Lake Norman area, York County is home to Rock Hill, Fort Mill, York, Tega Cay, and Clover. These small Southern gems offer a dynamic day trip meandering through the Carolina backcountry, along open country roads and down idyllic main streets. The activities in York County offer a vibrant look into a lively community in the middle of a rural renaissance.

The historic McCelvey Center in York is brimming with rich history and stellar performing arts. Home to the Yorkville Players and the Southern Revolutionary Institute, an educational research center focused on historic preservation, the McCelvey Center is also a treasure for live music. Don’t miss the lineup for the Southern Sounds Series where established and emerging Southern acts perform in this intimate and special venue. www.chmuseums.org/southernsoundseries/

California Grown, Cornelius Made The Lemke family took an urban approach to Lake Norman Winery, and now they’re bringing high-end wines right to Cornelius. by ALLISON ANDREWS • photos by GRANT BALDWIN

The Lemke family, Jayme, Joel, and Jeff, meet in the tasting room at their urban winery in Cornelius. They import California grapes and make wine on site.

W

Who would have guessed that a conversation with a stranger and a love of wine would lead to a second career? Certainly not 59-year-old Cornelius resident and Lake Norman Winery owner, Joel Lemke. Lemke was burned out in the corporate world. His son Jeff, 30, was also burned out on long hours as a chef. The two of them were looking for a new challenge the family could take on together. Then Joel remembered, “I had been told years ago by a guy I met in a bar in Pebble Beach, who had literally that day closed on a winery, that if you ever want to do this, the secret is don’t buy the land.” The

58

lakenormanmagazine.com DECEMBER 2014

reasons were simple. You don’t have to worry about the weather. You can adapt to market tastes rather than be confined to what the soil will allow. You have less overhead and taxes. It was an idea that seemed to make sense. “Jeff loves wine. I love wine. My wife Jayme loves wine,” says Lemke. The Lake Norman Winery is an ‘Urban Winery’, which means the grapes aren’t grown on the property. “We bought frozen grapes from California and had them shipped here,” Joel says. But they do make the wine at the winery located on Bailey Road.

Finding the quality of grapes they wanted wasn’t easy. The Lemke’s had been working with a broker who matches buyers to surplus wines. But Joel had a feeling if he could make the connections with wineries himself, he could get a better quality grape. His hunch was right. “The good stuff never gets to a broker market.” The Lemke’s are currently making their first batch. The Cabernet Sauvignon is fermenting in a 40 gallon stainless steel canister. It will be at least another year before the blend is ready. The winery opened in April of this year “and we’ve done something with that wine every day.”

In the meantime, the winery has hand-selected 12 different varieties of high-end wine from California that they are selling under their private label. The wines are all named after area streets, or have lake or boat related names. Lemke signed disclosure agreements with the wineries so he can’t say which wineries their wines are from, but he does say that one of the bottles he sells for $29.95 typically retails at closer to $80. The least expensive bottles sell for $12.95, but most are in the $29.95 to $69.95 range. Even when the winery is at full capacity making its own wine, they will continue to offer a variety of others under their label. The only drawback is once a certain wine is sold out, it’s not guaranteed to be back. Several Lake Norman Winery selections are available at area restaurants including Dressler’s, Bacchus Wine and Tapas, The Peninsula Club, The Cork and Cask, The Brickhouse Tavern, and Flatiron. “The challenge now is brand marketing and making sure that people recognize our brand as great wines for a great price,” says Lemke. Lake Norman wine tastings are offered in a small room from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday. It’s $10 for six wines and you get to keep the glass. On Dec. 11 the winery will host a special Holiday Tasting event. Space is limited so call 704-840-2116 to reserve your spot. www.lknwinery.com LNM DECEMBER 2014 lakenormanmagazine.com

Stay Satisfied Whether you decide on a catered affair or doing it yourself, food and drinks are what hold a party together. Diver Scallops White Wine Butter Sauce & Herbs For the Scallops: 1 pound dry sea scallops 4 tablespoons clarified butter Kosher salt, to taste Black pepper, to taste For the Sauce: 2 tablespoons shallot, minced 1/3 cup Chardonnay 1 tablespoons chives, finely chopped 1 tablespoons thyme, finely chopped 1/4 teaspoon lemon zest, finely grated

1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoon unsalted butter Kosher salt, to taste Black pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon parsley, finely chopped Remove the abductor muscle from each scallop and pat them dry with a paper towel. The drier the scallop, the better the sear. Heat the clarified butter in a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Season each scallop evenly on both sides with kosher salt and black pepper and place the scallops in the pan, being sure not to crowd them. Sear the scallops to golden brown on one side and carefully flip them, searing for an

additional 30 seconds on the other side. Remove the scallops from the pan and allow them to rest on a wire rack with a pan underneath to catch the juices. Reduce the heat to medium and immediately add the shallots. Sauté until shallots are translucent and fragrant. Add the white wine, chives, thyme, lemon zest, lemon juice, and the residual juices from the pan under the scallops on the wire rack. Simmer on medium heat for 2 minutes, remove from the heat, whisk in the butter and season with salt and pepper to taste. To serve, place the scallops with the seared side up on a plate and pour sauce over. Garnish with chopped parsley and enjoy.

Baked Mac & Cheese Bites

Other Ingredients: 1 pound orzo (cooked) 1/2 cup Italian breadcrumbs 3 tablespoons butter (melted) Phyllo cups (24 pack) To make the Delectable Cheese Sauce, melt butter in saucepan on medium then remove from heat and add flour and seasonings. Once blended, gradually add milk, then cook over low heat stirring constantly, until thick and smooth. Cook 5 minutes longer, then add cheese and stir until smooth and well blended. Quarter grape tomatoes and marinate them in sherry wine for 1 hour. Drain them and toss in olive oil to coat. Roaste in oven at 350 for 8-10 minutes. Boil 1 pound orzo pasta using package instructions, drain, then mix with the sauce. In a separate bowl mix Italian breadcrumbs and 3 tablespoons melted butter. To make things easy, you can use phyllo cups prepackaged cups (24). Using a teaspoon, fill each cup to the brim with the mac and cheese and orzo mixture, top with buttered breadcrumbs. Bake them for 6-8 minutes on 350 and top with sherry tomatoes!

If too thick, add 1 tablespoon of water at a time till you reach desired consistency. Put hummus into pastry bag with no tip and store in fridge until ready. Cut a thin slice off of the cherry tomato top and spoon out the tomato seeds and guts. Invert tomatoes on paper towel to drain water for approximately 20 minutes. While drying, using a peeler, thinly peel cucumbers long ways and cut down into 1.5-inch strips for wrapping around the tomato. Pipe in the kalamata hummus to each tomato and then use a toothpick to secure the cucumber slice around the tomato. Garnish with fresh parsley and crumbled feta cheese.

Treasure Hunter A Cornelius master jeweler has turned stones and metal into memorable moments for Lake Norman families for 21 years. by JENNY BRULE • photos by GRANT BALDWIN

“Every piece of jewelry has a story,” Michael Malyszko says. It’s this firm belief that has fueled Malyszko’s passion for the jewelry business for the past 42 years. A master jeweler, he has owned his own jewelry shop for 35 years, 21 of those years in the Lake Norman area, and the last seven in its current location in Cornelius. “I hear stories all day long about the meaning behind a piece of jewelry,” Malyszko, 56, says. “Why it’s important to that customer to have it repaired or redesigned. When I am able to do that, to make them happy makes my day.” It’s this direct connection to his customers that is behind Malyszko’s genuine enthusiasm for his work. “I’ve been in business for 42 years, but I’ve never worked a day of that,” he says. “This is a passion for me, not work—I absolutely love what I do.” His store is a gem at the lake, especially if one is looking for stunning custom made pieces. “When a customer comes in with an idea for a piece of jewelry, they describe it to me and I do my best to interpret what their idea is and make exactly what they want. There is only one level of interpretation. At large jewelry stores, customers describe to a sales person what their idea is, who then tells the designer, who then tells the jeweler who hopefully gets it right, but the idea’s already been through three levels of

interpretation, so there is more room for miscommunication.” But it’s not only custom pieces that Your Personal Jeweler offers. They carry a hefty array of unique wedding sets, estate jewelry, right hand rings, necklaces, and more, ready to wear. “For many of my customers, I wasn’t just the guy who sold them a piece of jewelry, I was a part of their lives; anniversaries, engagements, graduations—big events—that I was a part of,” he says. “And it’s that connection to people that makes me love what I do.” Malyszko offers an example of the meaning he gets out of being a jeweler. “A widow came in with her wedding band, her deceased husband’s band and the diamond from her engagement ring. She wanted me to make something that she could wear. I took both bands and interlocked them, then mounted the diamond in the middle and placed it on a chain so that she could wear it as a necklace. When the woman picked it up, I can tell you, there wasn’t a dry eye in the shop.” Thinking of making your own dazzling purchase? When asked about the seemingly-great internet deals available, Malyszko shares a cautionary tale. “People will order a piece of jewelry online and bring it to me to see if they got a good deal,” he says. “Sadly, they rarely do. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.” www.personaljeweleroflkn.com LNM DECEMBER 2014 lakenormanmagazine.com

Deck the Halls A Davidson shop owner and designer brings holiday spirit to lake homeowners—and the Boar’s Head Inn and Resort. by JENNY BRULE • photos by RUTHERFORD STUDIOS

Seasons at the Lake is a home and garden décor shop in Davidson that packs unique items and dazzling design ideas into their modest space. Gary Skaggs, 60, opened the Seasons at the Lake storefront just one and a half years ago and has seen his business go from strength to strength. “This area has been so supportive—the town of Davidson has been so supportive.” Skaggs says. Although Skaggs earned a business degree at Business Careers Institute in Greensburg, Pa., and worked in the corporate world until he was 30, his heart has always been in home and garden décor and design. “I blame my mother. She was a window designer for department stores in Manhattan. When I was little, she had no one to watch me, so she brought me along to work. She’d sit me in the corner of the window and decorate it for whatever holiday was coming up. I loved it,” he relates. Later, when he was just 13 years old, Skaggs got his first job decorating a Christmas tree in the restaurant where his mother then worked. Skaggs has also designed many ‘permanent botanicals,’ artificial plants, flowers, and elements used in decorating. His products have sold in stores like Neiman Marcus and Frontgate, to name a few. “I would take botanical elements like a magnolia leaf from North Carolina and fly over to China where we would make a mold of it, paint and texturize it, and design it into exact replicas of the original.” His designs are so life-like that he

was the first person to develop artificial products used in decorating Colonial Willamsburg. His store, located in the arts district on South Main Street, is filled with beautiful decor and gorgeous, handmade wreaths. “We do a lot of custom work,” Skaggs says. But, Seasons at the Lake creates much more than just custom wreaths. Using fresh as well as ‘permanent’ botanicals, the Seasons at the Lake team creates custom home and corporate décor. “We do table scapes, hearth scapes, door décor, and we do a lot of themed Christmas trees this time of year—each design is completely unique to that customer,” he says. “We come to their home and see what the color schemes are, what themes run throughout the house, then we come back to our shop and create designs specifically for that home.” For the last six years, the Seasons at the Lake design team has headed north to Boar’s Head Inn and Resort in Charlottesville, Virginia where Skaggs’ team of eight people spend 15 days, working 14-plus hours a day to adorn the renowned inn and its grounds with tasteful, colonial Christmas décor. “We design themes throughout the resort. We do live boar and deer topiaries outside, decorate the fences and lampposts running up to the inn with gorgeous ribbons and greenery, and do different Christmas themes in all of the common rooms. The Inn Crowd This winter opt for a cozier close-to-home getaway at one of Asheville’s bed and breakfasts. by LEAH HUGHES

Bed-and-breakfasts suit Asheville. A mountain town on the edge of the French Broad River with an eclectic mix of hip college students; burgeoning musicians, artists, and chefs; outdoor enthusiasts; and sophisticated retirees and vacationers—Asheville demands an alternative to average accommodations. Numerous B&Bs provide a personal, comfortable place to stay. Many inns break the spare-bedroom, doily-decorated stereotype. Younger couples on honeymoons and baby moons now seek out inns as

often as middle-age travelers. And inns cater to their interests, including such amenities as breakfasts made with locally sourced ingredients, custom maps for jogging and hiking, evening cocktail hours, and free Wi-Fi. Three inns in walking distance of downtown Asheville, and from one another, offer interesting innkeepers, well-appointed rooms, and creative dishes. All three are warm and welcoming, but each has its own charm.

Gregarious Grounds A couple sips coffee as they discuss the day’s plans. The Grove Park Inn and Craggy Gardens are among the choices. A dinner reservation at The Market Place is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. But first, breakfast. Christina and Jim Muth serve the first course at 9 a.m. The pineapple sticky bun is a twist on the hot milk cake Chris’ mother packed in her lunch when she was a child. “I’m an experimental cook,” Chris, 66, says. “I make stuff up here all the time.” The Muths own the Beaufort House Inn on North Liberty Street, about half a mile from downtown Asheville (www. beauforthouse.com). This is their eighth year as innkeepers of this 1894 pink Queen Anne Victorian with 11 guest rooms. The house sits on one and a half acres that Chris, an N.C. Cooperative Extension Master Gardener, has torn up and replanted and pruned and perfected piece by piece. A 250-year-old oak stands out front, shading the wide, wraparound porch. Her herb garden is in back, steps from the kitchen. Chris uses the delicate, fragrant leaves to garnish breakfast plates. She and Jim, 67, fell for this house about this time of year. They drove by while visiting their daughter, and the inn was trimmed in lights, blanketed in snow, and in need of new owners. They sold their house in Maryland on a Wednesday, drove down on Thursday, and started checking in guests on Friday. “Did we imagine this is what we’d be doing?” Chris says. “No, but this is the adventure.” DECEMBER 2014 lakenormanmagazine.com

Refreshed Victorian

“Do you know of any realtors we can contact,” a guest from Florida asks Bill and Emily McIntosh. It’s common for people to visit Asheville and want to stay. The McIntoshes made the move from Boston about four Bill and Emily McIntosh and a half years ago. Both of them worked at Boston Children’s Hospital, Bill, 65, as a photographer and Emily, 62, as a medical illustrator. “We had a Queen Anne Victorian in Boston,” Bill says. “But we had to work so hard to afford it, we were never around to enjoy it.” When they found this 1897 Queen Anne in Asheville’s Montford district, five and a half blocks from downtown, they decided to try the innkeeper life. The house was already an inn when they purchased it, but they eliminated clutter, rearranged, and incorporated some of their own antiques into the space. They opened the refreshed inn as A Bed of Roses Bed & Breakfast in 2010. (www. abedofroses.com) “We wanted it to be comfortable,” Emily says. Before they ran an inn, the McIntoshes used to hold a New Year’s brunch for their entire neighborhood in Boston. And they would take a day off around Christmas and spend the entire day baking cookies. “We’ve been practicing for years,” Bill says. “Now we’re living what we practiced.”

At 5:30 in the evening, James Murray pours a glass of Biltmore sauvignon blanc for a guest, and his wife, Susan, sets down a platter of pimento-cheese-and-bacon bites and another filled with bell peppers topped with homemade hummus. The coffee table is full of hors d’oeuvres. Music plays softly. The Murrays, both 59, sit down and explain how they landed in Asheville. The story involves 27 years living in Paris, London, Hong Kong, and Singapore. When they returned to the United States, each wrote down five things he and she wanted in their next city. They researched on the Internet, traveled around, got to Asheville, and said, “This is it.” They now own and operate the Carolina Bed & Breakfast in the Montford district (about a block from A Bed of Roses). (www.carolinabb.com) Their international treasures accent the Arts and Crafts style rooms in the 1901 home. James plays the concierge role, sitting down with guests for half an hour to go over everything Asheville. “Welcome home,” James says from the front room as a couple returns and climbs the stairs to one of six guest rooms. “What’s fun about having a big, old house that’s empty?” The Asheville Bed & Breakfast Association offers the Asheville Inn-sider’s Holiday Package from November 19 through January 3. Guests of the 17 member inns receive a list of recommended local businesses for holiday shopping and discounts at those stores. The inns also present guests with homemade holiday cookies and a printed recipe. For more information, visit ashevillebba. com. LNM

Snapshot photo by SERGE SKIBA

O

n Feb. 13 of this year, photographer Serge Skiba took this shot at Vineyard Point in Cornelius. Using his Nikon D610 with a zoom lens and a tripod, he captured the colors of sunset after a snowstorm, the lake, and the snow all in the same frame. “I love how snow makes a complicated landscape simple and pleasing to the eye.” Skiba says he doesn’t see very many photos of Lake Nor-

man, let alone photos of the lake with snow on the ground at sunset. ““I would like to capture images of our area that show the true beauty of where we live and why many of us suffer through countless traffic jams in order to live where we do.” www.facebook.com/EarthCaptured
