Talk of the Town
Finding Higher Yields in a Low Yield World
In my humble opinion, traditional fixed income portfolios could be in for a rude awakening since we’ve built a massive bond bubble. As soon as the Fed raises James D. Stillman interest rates, don’t be surprised to see the value of your bond portfolio crash. So, although bond strategies will continue to work, it’ll be very important to manage them carefully as time goes on. Yields of 5% - 7% are attainable, but you have to think “outside the box” of what might seem familiar. One must always balance risk with return (risk adjusted return) when choosing income options. Attaining a 5% - 7% income flow can be done relatively safely when structured properly. Here are a few choices with attractive yields to consider: Income Annuity Ladders - This is a method of “laddering” specific annuities to achieve a specific guaranteed stream of lifetime income. Yields of 5% - 7% payouts are common and inflation protection can be built in. We call this “longevity insurance”. Hybrid Fixed Indexed Annuities have worked very well using these laddering techniques combined with guaranteed income riders. Dividend-Paying Stocks – The average yield for S&P 500 dividend paying stocks is approximately 2.5% - 3%. By sector, telecom companies have the highest yields at 6%, followed by utilities at 4.2%. Investors concerned about risk should look for companies that have raised their dividends for the past 10 years and aren’t straining to pay them. REITs – Real Estate Investment Trusts have had strong returns in recent years. REITs are corporate entities investing in real estate (usually leasing apartment and medical complexes). Their purpose is to reduce or eliminate corporate taxes. REITs are required to pay out 90% of their taxable income to investors each year. The apartment and medical sectors have been particularly strong. We have various REITs paying out 6%-8% yields. Master Limited Partnerships – MLPs are publicly traded limited partnerships. Because of their organizational structure, they don’t pay corporate taxes and can pass much of their profits on to investors. We like energy-related MLPs not only for their solid dividend yields often 6%
or more, but because they are relatively stable investments and good for diversification strategies.
Bonds - There are various types of bonds (U. S. treasuries, municipal, corporate, high-yield, emerging markets, etc.). U.S. Treasury Bonds are at historic lows, so I’m not going to discuss those. New corporate issues are typically low, so I’m not talking about them. But let’s briefly discuss some bonds that pay higher yields, especially if you don’t mind taking on a little more risk: A) High-Yield Bonds, those rated BB or lower clearly come with more risk, but you can pick up substantial yields in excess of 7%. These can be purchased as bond funds or through an ETF (exchange traded fund). B) Municipal Bonds are tax exempt (from federal and sometimes local/state taxes), so if you get one yielding 4.4% that’s equivalent to a 6.8% taxable bond if you’re in the 35% tax bracket. Muni’s are typically best positioned for high income earners because of these tax advantages. Separately Managed Accounts - This is where we partner with Institutional Wealth Managers who have developed specific income portfolio strategies using a blend of most of what we’ve discussed above. They are actively managed, 100% liquid at all times, and we have strategies that over the past 10-12 years have averaged approximately 6% with no down years. This “in my opinion” is the wave of the future. So, as you can see, there are many options for higher yields that are still relatively safe. As always, if you’d like more information or a free consultation just give us a call. Tune in to “The Safe Harbor Retirement Planning Show” every Wednesday at 8:00am and Saturday at 10:00am on WSIC 1400 AM or 100.7 FM. Until next month, James D. Stillman

Yes folks, there has been a war declared on “senior savers”! Not long ago, you could build a reliable portfolio of income-producing investments with just a few simple steps. Not so these days with safe money options lucky to get 1%2%. I wrote an article addressing this a few years ago, but since then things have not changed much in the fixed income marketplace. So, I thought I’d run it by you again.

Editor’s Note
T
This month we celebrate one of the most popular recreation activities at Lake Norman, boating. With boat shows starting up this month and spring (hopefully) right around the corner, we’ve found all you need to know to prepare for the season. Whether you’re a veteran boat owner, buying your first vessel, or just looking to join a club,
we have the ultimate guide to get you started. Allison Andrews put together a feature with information on Lake Norman boat clubs, three upcoming boat shows, the fishing forecast, tips for getting kids out on the water, and the story of Ed Longino, an antique boat collector. A lot goes into deciding to get a boat. Michael Solender interviewed three locals and got the story of why they bought their boats in my favorite story in this issue (page 38). Whether trying something new or using a boat for work, all three have very different, but interesting stories.
Whether you’re a veteran boat owner, buying your first vessel, or just looking to join a club, we have the ultimate guide to get you started.
Also in this issue, Jenny Brule writes about Davidson’s new candy destination, South Main Sweet Shop. From retro favorites like Zots and jaw breakers to penny candies and gourmet chocolates, South Main Sweet Shop is a fun stop for both kids and adults—and just in time for Valentine’s Day. When gearing up for this year’s boating season, I hope this issue points you in the right direction.

Although Lake Norman was built to provide electricity to the Piedmont, for those who live here it is so much more than a functional landmark. It is the heart of where we live—and gives us all a little reason to slow down and enjoy life. To make the most of an escape to the lake, you’ll need some time on the water. We’ve found a few ways to jump in to the boating life.

GO PLAY ON THE LAKE Get the kids out on a boat even if you don’t have one

uffy Electric Boats at North Harbor off of Exit 30 are popular with adults for wine cruises, girls’ nights out, and special occasions. But they are also a great way to get kids out on the lake for a chill afternoon. The boats can be fully enclosed and are equipped with iPod hookups, CD players, a table, and a heating system. Rentals start at two hours. Duffy Electric Boats is the official boat manufacturer for the Walt Disney Corporation. Stay tuned to their Facebook page for information about their upcoming Electric Boat Club or log onto www.duffylkn.com A sight seeing cruise is a fun way to spend a few hours with kids on the lake. The Catawba Queen, a two-story Mississippi riverboat, departs from Queens Landing off of Highway 150. The cruise lasts an hour and a half. For an extra $9.00 you can add a picnic lunch complete with a sandwich, chips, cookie, and a drink. Treat the kids to a round of mini-golf when you are done. www. queenslanding.com Sea Scouts is an adventure-based group where teens direct the activity. The group is open to boys and girls ages 14 through 20 who want to learn about water-related topics. They meet every Thursday evening at the Penninsula Yacht Club. Sea Scouts is a subsidiary of Boy Scouts of America. For more information contact Captain Howie Kaplan at hkaplan@seatow.com or go to the Facebook page, Sea Scouts of Lake Norman.

JOIN THE CLUB More people are finding not owning a boat is the best way to enjoy the lake
T
here is an old saying that goes, “The best day of your life is when you get a boat. The second best day of your life is when you get rid of it.” Boating clubs are changing the way people enjoy boating. They give you the benefits without the cost or the hassle of boat ownership. You can go water skiing one weekend, fishing the next. Most clubs work on this basic premise. You pay a monthly membership for use of any boat in the fleet when you want it. Of course there are exceptions and fees vary, so it’s important to get all of the details to find one that’s right for you.
Aquaventure Watercraft Rentals and Boat Club 7515 Stonewall St., Sherrills Ford 704-724-0996 • www.aquaventure-rentals.com Along with the regular pontoons and ski boats, members have access to jet skis, paddleboards, and kayaks. February to April is the best time to join.

Destination Boat Clubs Inland Sea Marina, 114 Bowfin Circle, Mooresville 844-322-2582 • www.destinationboatclubs.com Along with a top-of-the-line fleet all outfitted with gps navigation, Destination Boat Clubs also offers sunrise to sunset boating and jet skis, kayaks, and tubing.
Freedom Boat Club WaterStreet Seaport Marina, 17505 W. Catawba Ave., Cornelius 704-659-1294 • www.freedomboatclublkn.com The club offers all types of boats including four double-deck pontoons with slides. Members can boat in 84 other club locations throughout the country.

FISHING FORECAST
THE SEARCH FOR NORMIE
I
f you are willing to brave the chill, you can fish in Lake Norman even during the winter. Fishing Expert Captain Gus Gustafson has been fishing Lake Norman for more than 20 years. He offers the following advice for enjoying the lake during the winter. “In February the water temperature can drop to 40 degrees. Fish will search for warmer waters so stick to areas surrounding the two local power plants. The hot holes, as they are known, around the McGuire Nuclear Station and the Marshall Steam Station are great spots for black bass, striped bass, and perch. “In March fish begin a three-month spawning stage. As the water temperature rises, fish become more active especially along sandy banks of the shore,” says Gustafson. “While you can catch any fish year round, March is most likely to land you white perch, crappie, or bass.”
Gustafson is happy to answer your questions and be your guide. You can find him at www. fishingwithgus. com.
Y
ou have likely heard of the Loch Ness Monster but Lake Norman has its own urban legend. Over the years, hundreds of people have reported seeing something strange in the waters while sitting on docks, swimming in the lake, or cruising on a boat. It’s described as a creature—maybe a giant fish. Locals have affectionately named it Normie. Many of the reports have been made into a book called “Lake Norman Monster: A Decade of Sightings.” There’s even a children’s book, “Normie,” written by Huntersville teacher Amy Myers. You can also get T-shirts, keychains, and a novelty monster hunting call at www.lakenormanmonster.com/shop. php

ENJOYING THE PAST IN THE PRESENT O
n a lake full of shiny sport boats, pontoons, and ski boats quietly sit two boats from days gone by. They are protected by one of the few fully enclosed boat houses on Lake Norman. Inside is a 1965 Century Resorter and a 1930 Chris Craft model 100 owned by Ed Longino and his son. The senior Longino says his love for antique wooden boats began while vacationing with his family on Lake Rabun in Georgia. “I can remember when I was 10 years old thinking those are the coolest boats I have ever seen and I’m going to
have one one day, and I bought my first one at age 50.” Longino says there’s a misperception that antique boats are extremely expensive and hard to maintain. “You can get into antique boating cheaper than you can get a jet ski,” he says. “As long as you keep them out of the sun and dry when you aren’t using them, they don’t need much work.” His Chris Craft hasn’t been worked on since 2003. Longino loves antique boats so much he has one on display in his house. On a landing, where a baby grand piano used
to sit, is a 13-foot Bowman built in 1956. He bought it for $2,600. His son, who was just 13 years old then, paid for part of it with $200 he had saved up. “He was excited to give up half his life savings at the time and he didn’t give it up for nothing.” They used the boat for years. Now it looks out over the lake, the star of many of the conversations in the nautical themed room. Longino says, “It’s all about preserving the history and the stories that come along with it. Each and every antique boat owner has got a story about his boat.” LNM

Set Sail
LUNAHZON PHOTOGRAPHY
It was her milestone 50th birthday that convinced Karen Dobbs she needed to satisfy her growing curiosity with the water, buy a sailboat, and unleash the joy that mastering the art of sailing offers. Looking to share her love of the open water and the life lessons from sailing with others, Dobbs, 64, founded “Lake Norman Women Sailors” three years ago and revels in helping women realize their sailing goals. “I loved everything about learning how to sail,” says Dobbs, whose boat is a 26-foot, ’98 Hunter 260 she keeps at WaterStreet Seaport Marina in Cornelius. “I find navigating and the thought process behind capturing the wind exhilarating. It’s a feeling I enjoy sharing. I created my business to provide women an environment where they’d be comfortable.” Dobbs rigged her boat, “High C’s,” so she can sail it by herself. She says it’s well suited for instruction. “The boat has an easy step through, a high boom, and a comfortable downstairs salon where I hold chalk talks and after-sail reviews with students,” says Dobbs. “I tell my students, ‘Come curious, leave empowered.’ Learning how to sail really has a powerful effect on people.” www. lakenormanwomensailors.com

Work on Water Founder of happenings website www.LKNFun. com, Nate Davis’s time on the Lake Norman Marine Commission was all about finding common ground amongst responsible boaters who share a love of the lake. Dubbed by some a ‘party liaison,’ Davis, 40, served several past roles on the commission including president. “Responsible boating and partying on the lake requires respect and etiquette from those on the water and surrounding homeowners,” he says. Davis is skipper of the oft seen ‘LKNFun boat,’ a Baja Islander 242 that the manufacturer customized with a red, white, and blue color scheme. Davis equipped the boat with two separate amplifiers, six speakers, two subwoofers and vibration board to showcase his handpicked set lists for his lake outings. Happenings on Lake Norman are more than just recreation for Davis, reporting on them is his business. “I take a lot photos out on the lake and needed an easy way to get from boat to boat,” says Davis. “So together with a buddy we motorized a paddleboat and attached it to my boat. It’s a fun way to go boat hopping. My boat is my work truck; I call it my F-250 on the water.”

For Jason Hinklin, 28, Lake Norman’s clarion call helped him grieve the loss of his mother, Judy, who passed away in June of 2013 from ovarian cancer. “In May of 2014 I bought a 2007, 21-foot Malibu Wakesetter, in remembrance of my mom,” says Hinklin, who keeps his boat at a friend’s dock near Stumpy Creek Landing. “I felt her spirit and presence on the lake, how she loved life. I felt her telling me to get a boat and enjoy it.” Hinklin said being out on Lake Norman brings back fond family memories of growing up on Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. When he saw the bright orange boat for sale at a dealer, he felt another connection to his mom. “Orange was her favorite color; it all came into place, I had to have this boat.” Named “Elevate,” Hinklin’s boat is specifically set-up for wakesurfing, a fast growing sport he enjoys with his father, Darrell, 68, as often as they can. The boat has a special 7-foot tower for towing, allowing greater leverage and more air time for wake-surfing. The boat’s swim platform is also modified making a larger wake and greater opportunity for tricks. “Lake Norman is simply a great place to enjoy life out on the boat,” says Hinklin. LNM

Sisters Carly Leone and Regina McGrath-Cantrell had always wanted to open a business together. Longtime Lake Norman residents, they decided on opening a candy shop in Davidson. “Davidson seemed like the natural choice for us because of its small town atmosphere and strong sense of community. It was perfect for our vision,” McGrath-Cantrell, 53, says. They opened South Main Sweet Shop in August of 2014. “Our biggest surprise was that we didn’t realize was how much fun the store would be!” Leone, 63, says. She

continues, “The kids that come in are a joy; they are talkative and very polite and have a wonderful time filling their bags with candy.” South Main Sweet Shop sells candy from two different angles. “I envisioned an old fashioned candy shop. We wanted to carry candy current favorites, as well as bins of candies so that kids can scoop their own; we have 21 colors of M&Ms,” McGrath-Cantrell says. However, her sister has long had an interest in fine chocolates (which often appeal to the adults accompanying their

children to the shop). “We have amazing chocolates from small batch, artisan chocolatiers. Our truffles are all natural and are made from the highest quality Belgian chocolate,” Leone says. Several of their suppliers have been official chocolatiers of the Academy Awards, the Emmy’s, and the Golden Globes. The shop is in a bright, sunlit space that is comprised of two rooms filled with an eclectic range of candies. Beyond bon bons and truffles, the upscale chocolate case in the back of the main room houses everyday favorites like sea salt caramels, toffee, fudge, giant peanut butter cups, and chocolate covered pretzels. The rest of the shop is layered with gourmet chocolate bars, retro candies like jawbreakers or Zots, and bins of penny candies that can be scooped up and sold by weight In addition to welcoming children’s birthday parties, South Main Sweet Shop revels in making custom orders and inhome events. “We recently arranged an elegant chocolate buffet for a wedding shower—it was gorgeous,” Leone says. The sisters find it rewarding to plan and provide customers with confection arrangements for weddings, grown-up birthday parties, and corporate events. South Main Sweet Shop stocks an array of seasonal candies. They are ready for Valentine’s Day, and are happy to arrange custom-made signature baskets. www.southmainsweetshop.com LNM South Main Sweet Shop also specializes in small-batch chocolates in addition to retro and bulk candy.

Game, Set, Match An expansive new tennis complex opens in Mooresville this month. by SAM BOYKIN • photos by SERGE SKIBA
T
Tennis players rejoice! The expansive new Lake Norman Tennis Center (LNTC) is scheduled to open this month. Situated in Mooresville off Exit 36, the $4 million facility features five indoor courts, nine outdoor courts (including six clay), and two pickle ball courts to accommodate fans of the increasingly popular sport that’s a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and Ping-Pong. Dr. Ryan Heider, a surgeon at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, is spearheading the project and says the center offers world-class youth and adult coaching, organized leagues, along with regular social events and activities. Four top-notch coaches provide tennis instruction, including Alex Bogomolov, whose career-high Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) ranking was 33. Bogomolov was named ATP’s Most Improved Player in 2011.
50

Before the facility was completed, staff and the students practiced at Cornelius Road Park. The coaching staff from left are Alex Bogomolov, Gerald Depka, Justin Taylor, Robby Edge, and Deon Henry.

The center will also have a 10,000-square-foot, two-story clubhouse, with a fitness center, locker rooms, tennis gear, snacks, TVs, and areas where members can socialize and watch the action on both the indoor and outdoor courts. “I really wanted to do this right,” Heider says. Prior to moving to Mooresville from Chapel Hill in 2006, Heider, 40, never played tennis. But soon after he and his wife, Angela, and their four kids settled here, they all became active in the local tennis community. He says the idea for LNTC developed over the years as he and his tennis buddies often grew frustrated about the lack of indoor tennis courts—especially when their matches and practices were rained out. So rather than just complain, Heider decided to do something about it. With the help of a couple of local investors and tennis pros, Heider bought about 10 acres of vacant land near Talbert Pointe Business Park. After the Mooresville Board of Commissioners unanimously approved his permit, he started bringing his vision to life. “We wanted to create something the community needed and would enjoy,” says Heider. “And I think we’ve done it with LNTC.” For details go to www.lakenormantenniscenter.com LNM

Designs to do Good A local fashion designer uses her gifts to help those in need. by JENN BAXTER photos by JUSTIN DRISCOLL

When local fashion designer Sara Johnson heard Samaritan’s Feet founder, Manny Ohonme, speak at the Cove Church in Statesville in August 2013, she couldn’t believe her ears or her eyes. “He seemed lit from within,” says Johnson, 36. In fact, she was so inspired by his captivating presence and motivating words that she went back to the church’s Mooresville campus that evening to hear him speak again. After the service, she stood in line for 45 minutes to meet him in person. “I told him I had come from Statesville and introduced myself but he said he already knew who I was,” says Johnson. Apparently, much to Johnson’s surprise, they were already friends on Facebook and he was a fan of her work. Ohonme also introduced her to his wife, Tracie, who helps him run the organization

that spreads hope to needy children by washing their feet and giving them a new pair of shoes. “[They] ignited me,” says Johnson. She knew she wanted to use her fashion platform to support the Ohonmes’ efforts but she wasn’t sure how she was going to do it…yet. Fast forward to spring 2014. “I needed something to wear to sing in at church,” says Johnson, who has been messing with the design of a ‘worship top’ for nearly two years. Having finally gotten it right, she wore

the flowy blouse while performing with the church’s worship band one morning and immediately started getting compliments. Even a usually quiet male member of the production crew was affected by the ethereal garment. “He said when I had my arms raised, that my silhouette on the stage looked like an angel,” she says. By the time the second morning service began, she knew she was on to something. “I knew right then that this was the piece and that I would call it the ‘Tracie
Top’ after my friend, Tracie Ohonme,” says Johnson. She now sells the top through her Facebook page and online Etsy shop, as well as on the Samaritan’s Feet website. It’s available in sizes six through 16, although Johnson says it works on all sizes. “It’s made from a translucent, light fabric and is incredibly versatile,” she says. “You can wear it with jeans and a tank top or over a dress.” Since the top sells for $42, she decided $20 from each sale will go directly to Samaritan’s Feet.

“I can’t afford to give them $1,000,” says Johnson, “but this I can do.” Ideally, she says she would like to sell 100 tops and fund a full shoe distribution, which would put shoes on the feet of 500 deserving children. Johnson said as long as she is selling her fashions, she will always have this top available for them, and that she hopes it will become a legacy. “I’ve always had a heart for missions,” she says. “But to actually be able to use what I love and God’s gifts to help them is like coming full circle.” LNM

Fantasy Island Antigua’s Curtain Bluff resort offers endless opportunities for boaters, sun-seekers, and those looking for the ultimate island get-away. by MICHAEL J. SOLENDER

With warmer temps still months ahead, the Caribbean isle of Antigua offers sun seekers an enchanting destination to take off the winter chill. Crystalline warm water, pristine beaches, and all manner of boating opportunities make this tiny island a most proper antidote for cabin fever. Best of all, Antigua is only a four-hour nonstop flight from Charlotte. In Antigua, there is no finer choice to soak up the West Indies Island sun than Curtain Bluff. Here golden breasted bananaquits serenade guests upon arrival and tiny tree frogs ensure restful slumber with evening lullabies. All set on 15 acres of lush tropical gardens bursting with fireengine red hibiscus, lavender orchids, and more than 70 species of palm trees gracing the immaculate grounds. The venerable boutique resort is situated along the southwesterly coastline of the island. It boasts two beaches, seemingly endless water sports, French accented Caribbean cuisine, a world class spa, tennis, and more. Each of the 72 guest accommodations are lovingly appointed and mere steps from the ocean.
Repeat Visits At Curtain Bluff, guests don’t visit the property as much as they are hosted by staff whose average tenure is 28 years. Hospitality is the gold standard where touches like beachside chilled towels or

champagne to toast the sunset from the spa veranda don’t need to be asked for—they are simply provided. Part of the many reasons more than 70 percent of their guests are repeat visitors; some coming back year after year for decades. “We opened in 1962 where the vision of our founder, Howard Hulford, was creating a warm and welcoming environment,” says managing director, Rob Sherman, 59. “Over the years we’ve worked hard to build relationships and treat guests like family. Guests enjoy an intimate feel and tell us the resort is elegant yet not pretentious.” New York based comedian Jeff Kreisler, 40, enjoyed the resort recently with his wife Anne, 34, and young son Scott, 3. “I remember coming here as a kid in high school and enjoying the beach and all the fun water-based activities,” says Kreisler, “I want to create the same kind of memories with my family.”
Open Water Options at Curtain Bluff to get onto the open water abound. Guests can grab a Hobie Cat and take it for a sail around scenic Morris Bay. If kayaking or paddle boarding is more your style, one of the helpful staff will be glad to set you up. Divers and snorkel enthusiasts are less than 10 minutes from one of the best reefs in the Caribbean. Here you’re likely to spot eagle rays, jet black spiny sea urchin, schools

Breakfasts are not to be missed at Curtain Bluff as Chef Blatz’s bread program features all homemade goodies where decisions between lighter-than-air croissants, pain au chocolat, or his special banana bread are the most difficult choice you’ll face all day. Snapshot photo by LINDA CARPER
S
herrills Ford resident Linda Carper took this photo on a calm day last year at the NorthView Harbour boat ramp on the west side of the lake. Carper likes to take pictures around the lake for fun and snapped this shot while walking to the community boat dock. “This view was so peaceful and breathtaking that I had to take a picture of it!” Carper says. “Views like this are one of the many reasons my husband and I moved to Lake Norman.”
