Talk of the Town

The Power of Zero & Planning For a Tax Free Retirement

James D. Stillman

I have one simple question for all our readers. In the future, do you think tax rates will go up, go down, or stay the same? If you’re one that thinks they’re going down or staying as is, then what I’m going to say won’t have much meaning for you. But if you’re like the other 99% of us that believe taxes will likely be going up, then maybe this article will have some value and give you another perspective.

Ladies and gentleman, we are in the midst of a gathering storm! Currently tax rates are still at historic lows when looking back at the time since 1913 - when the federal income tax was first imposed. It’s been as high as 94% (1943)! From 1936-1981, the top federal income tax rate never dropped below 70%! Ed Slott, CPA and one of America’s retirement experts, says that taxes may double and all of us that have 401(k)s, IRAs, etc. have “The Government Plan”, and not your own. Remember, revenue-hungry Uncle Sam is your partner when investing in “qualified” retirement accounts, and all he has to do is increase taxes to get a bigger share of your retirement. On January 11, 2011, a CPA named David M. Walker appeared on national radio and made a grim prediction: Based on the current fiscal path, future tax rates will have to double to prevent our country from going bankrupt! Why? Debt, birthrates, baby boomers, etc. all add up to the problem! It’s a math problem, to put it simply! We cannot sustain the mathematical path we are on and survive. So, who is David M. Walker anyway? For eleven years starting in 1998, David Walker served as the Comptroller General of the United States and as the head of the Government Accountability Office. In short, he was the CPA for the USA and the nation’s chief auditor. In other words, HE KNOWS WHAT HE’S TALIKING ABOUT!

So, back to that tax free retirement thing and “the power of zero”. When it comes to retirement, it’s all about “spendable dollars” and spending with confidence. If you were a farmer, would you rather pay tax on the seed or the harvest? Basically, it’s the “pay me now or pay me later” concept we’re looking at. In most instances, paying later costs more. You can apply this to retirement planning also. If you know that taxes will go up in the future, then why would you put money into a retirement vehicle that essentially guarantees you’ll pay more taxes later, which happens to be when you need the money most? Ed Slott (remember – “America’s IRA guru”) proposes that if you go from “forever taxed to never taxed”, then you will have a much more successful retirement. Now, I know all the CPA’s out there are saying that it’s good to use “qualified” accounts because you save taxes now, 401(k)s have an employer match, you’ll be in a lower tax bracket when you retire, etc., etc. But here are a few things to consider: most retirees lose deductions & exclusions for tax purposes, many of them don’t actually lose that much income in retirement (if proper planning was done), and that you don’t really know what future tax rates will be. If tax rates double, then it’s all a moot point anyway. So how do you solve this tax problem? Basically there are two ways: Roth IRAs or investment grade life insurance commonly known as a LIRP (Life Insurance Retirement Plan). Most people are familiar with Roth IRAs, but very few understand how a Life Insurance Retirement Plan works. About 85% of Fortune 500 Company CEOs use LIRPs, as well as many members of Congress. Bottom line, the income derived from either (Roth or LIRP) is income tax free - as long as certain criteria are met. This is what gives you “the power of zero”! We’ll discuss both in more detail in next month’s article. Remember, sometimes zero is your hero! As always, for a free consultation, additional information, or a free analysis of your current situation, just contact us at JDS Wealth Management. We offer various free reports, a free cost & risk analysis, and a free tax analysis of your current portfolio and retirement plan. Until next month, James D. Stillman

Editor’s Note

I

It seems like a long time coming, but summer is finally in full swing around Lake Norman. This is the perfect time of year for a recreation issue crammed full of ideas for things to do around the lake. We also used this issue to highlight summer style that you can find

in boutiques around the lake. I grew up around water and went out on boats when I was younger, but I’ve never been very fond of it. That may be putting it lightly—I have nervous breakdown if I’m on a boat drifting for too long (Ironic for the editor of a magazine about the lake, huh?). I decided it would be a great idea to do a fashion photo shoot on a moving sailboat on Lake Norman. Armed with Dramamine, three models, a stylist and her assistant, a photographer and her assistant, nine outfits, seven bottles of water, two captains, and two boats, we set sail. I have to say, there’s nothing quite like being on the second level of a pontoon boat at sunset and watching all the sailboats participating in Lake Norman Community Sailing’s Social Sail race through the coves. Six remarkably calm and idyllic hours later, we successfully

wrapped the shoot. Without the help of captains Dave Stephen and Dominic Ferraro, the whole attempt would’ve been a disaster. Thanks to them for their patience and expertise—and to Dave for being such a good sport about wearing the clothes we brought. And thanks to Carefree Boat Club for letting us borrow two gorgeous boats from their fleet (including the 25-foot Catalina featured on page 44), and to Port City Club for letting us use their picturesque dock and patio. And especially thanks you, the readers, for picking up this issue. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Burn Boot Camp - Fit Community of Moms was founded by 27-year-old fitness professional, Devan Kline, in 2012. With just $5,000 of fitness equipment and a partnership with a local gymnastics studio, Kline built a clientele of over 150 members using just word of mouth. Since then, Burn Bootcamp has exploded with facilities in Huntersville, Cornelius, Mooresville, Denver, Pineville, South Charlotte, and Durham, as well as their first franchise location in Concord. We sat down with Kline to see what makes Burn Boot Camp so special and what we can expect from them in the future. How did you come up with the idea of Burn Boot Camp? Why did you want to focus on helping moms get in shape? “When I played professional baseball I lived with a host family in the minor leagues. My host mother was overweight and I could tell it was negatively affecting her life. Noticing that, I offered to help her get fit because she really wanted to be able to keep up with her kids. It was extremely satisfying for me to help someone become happier through the gateway of health and fitness. I knew from that point on exactly what I would do when my baseball career came to an end, change the world one mom at a time. Thus, Burn Boot Camp was born.” What can a new member expect when they come to your training facility? “You can expect a warm, encouraging, and supportive environment where each mom and woman alike are pulling together on a daily basis to achieve the same goals. You can expect extreme motivation from all angles with no competition besides the ‘get better every day’ mentality you have with yourself. You can expect zero negativity, competition, or any other form of common ‘gym’ discomfort. There is no food in my training facility that is not BBC approved, and there is also no swearing. We expect you to bring your piece of the energy because we are a team and we must all do this together. You can [also] expect to form some amazing friendships. You will form lasting relationships that go far beyond fitness, making

by JENN BAXTER BBC a second home for you. Plus, you all will already have one thing in common, hating to love my training sessions.” Did you study exercise and nutrition in school? What certifications do you hold? “I went to Central Michigan University where I eventually graduated with a BABS. I was always an athlete and knew kinetics and anatomy of the human body very well from research and training my own body to excel in sports. I wanted to learn something in college that was foreign to me. My family are historically construction contractors, so I wanted to learn how to be my own boss, how to manage people, and how to create success on my own. I always had a notion of never wanting to work for someone else. That propelled me to learn how to be a businessman who was stuck in a personal trainer’s body. I hold a BSBA in Finance, a NCCPT (National Council of Certified Personal Trainers), an NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine), and an ACE FSN (Fitness Specific Nutrition).” When did you launch BBC in Lake Norman and how did you get it off the ground? “Self-belief. I did not know a single soul moving to Charlotte and I got out into the community and hustled my butt off. Stepping outside my comfort zone in every aspect of the business. I knew that nothing would be handed to me and being in a larger market, there was plenty of competition. I knew that I had something that couldn’t be taught - appreciation, passion, and excitement for helping moms and other women completely transform their lives.” You’ve seen amazing growth over the last three years, even being named one of the fastest growing training studios in the country. What do you attribute that growth to? “I attribute the rapid success of Burn Boot Camp to my clients and our amazing trainers who have been here since day one, my wife, Morgan Kline, who believed in me so much that she quit her job to become the Head Trainer of BBC Cornelius and co-owner, and to Mike Hartshorne of BBC Concord who was my very first trainer and

subsequently become our very first franchisee. But as trainers, we would be nowhere without the Lake Norman community embracing our amazing program.” What’s the most important thing you think busy moms need to know about living a healthy lifestyle? “The most important thing that busy moms need to know is that it is going to be hard. We are here to help make it easier, but poor health is accumulative and thus transforming your health in a positive fashion will be hard as well. If our clients want to take their health to a place it’s never been before, they will have to do things they have never done before. If nothing changes, nothing changes.” What does the future hold for Burn Boot Camp? “I think the future is very bright. We just became a national franchise as of February and already are set to bring [on] six brand new locations, all popping up this fall. We will grow one leader at a time. We do not sell our BBC model, we award it to those who show the same appreciation, passion, and excitement as our BBC family.”

Summer Reads

I

by DEB MITCHELL

Emma: A Modern Retelling, Alexander McCall Smith, Pantheon Books, $25.95 The loveable-yet-‘clueless’ Jane Austen character is back, this time as an interior designer who presumes to be as adept at matchmaking as she is at matching fabrics and finishes. Set in present day London, this Emma, like the original, realizes she has much to learn about matters of the heart – including her own. “I was attached to the movie Clueless in high school, followed by infatuation with Gwyneth Paltrow’s portrayal of Emma,” says Fitzgerald. “Smith’s retelling is true to its roots, but highly entertaining even if you haven’t read any Jane [Austen].”

Far from the Madding Crowd, Thomas Hardy, Vintage Books, $9.00 You’ll get lost in Hardy’s tale of a beautiful farmer’s daughter torn between three very different suitors, set in the changing world of small town rural England during the Industrial Revolution. If you’ve thus far missed this lesserknown novel by the author of Tess of the D’Urbervilles, now is the perfect time to catch it. “[This] classic novel goes to the big screen this summer, and it’s well worth picking up the book for a great summer read,” Fitzgerald says.

24

lakenormanmagazine.com JULY 2015

Paper Towns, John Green, Speak, $9.99 From the author of The Fault in Our Stars, this is another simultaneously moving and witty coming of age tale whose appeal is ageless. This book brings to the table an added aspect of adventure, as quirky and charismatic main character Margo seeks revenge on an ex-boyfriend. “John Green nails it again with an incredible story chock-full of wonderful characters,” says Fitzgerald. Even more exciting, she says, is the fact that scenes from the upcoming movie starring Cara Delevigne and Nat Wolff were shot around the Lake Norman area and a young local actress was cast to play Margo in childhood.

The Wright Brothers, David McCullough, Simon & Schuster, $30.00 (hardcover) What more could North Carolinians ask from a non-fiction summer read? Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner McCullough took his childhood love of making model airplanes to another level by fleshing out the story of our native sons with their personal histories and characters. This approach to the story of how man learned to fly solidifies the facts in a way history class never did. “If you’re headed to the breezy beaches of North Carolina…and especially the Outer Banks this summer, you’ve got to read this one,” Fitzgerald says. “One of my favorite ways to read non-fiction is to experience the places first-hand. We’ve lucked out with [this] fantastic depiction of the history of our state’s coast.” Barefoot Dogs, Antonio Ruiz-Camacho, Scribner, $23.00 This novel is a patchwork quilt of stories linking members of a family across generations and around the globe. Ruiz-Camacho brilliantly and touchingly uses the shards of a family in crisis to show the commonality of the human experience regardless of socioeconomic or geographic context and how family relationships really can be the ties that hold us together when we’re otherwise falling apart. “Summer is the season of journeys and [this book] takes me to some of the places I’ve loved to live and visit, namely Texas, Mexico, and Spain,” says Hamilton-Genson.

It’s time for fun summer reads! We asked Adah Fitzgerald (who became the new owner of Davidson’s beloved Main Street Books in March) what she and her assistant manager, Catherine HamiltonGenson, are reading this summer. To shop for these or other titles on your summer reading list, you can pop Adah Fitzgerald and Catherine into the quaint storeHamilton-Genson at Davidson’s front (and say ‘hello’ Main Street Books. to Adah and Catherine while you’re there), or stay home and use Main Street Books’ new online shopping portal, www.mainstreetbooksdavidson.com. Either way, you’ll be set for long, lazy hours of reading by the lake all summer long.

Fried Green Tomatoes by JENN BAXTER

Burton Farms is located on the Western side of Lincoln County. First-generation farmer Jonathan Burton, who started his farm by renting land, now owns over 170 acres, rents another 50 acres, and employees over 40 people during the peak season. You can find them at the Huntersville Growers’ Market located in the parking lot of Huntersville Elementary School on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., as well as the Piedmont Triad, Charlotte, Asheville, Hickory, NoDa, Conover, and Denver farmers markets. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/jonathan. burton.501 or follow them on Twitter at @Burton_Farms.

Ingredients: 4 to 6 green tomatoes, sliced Wash: 2 cups buttermilk (old-fashioned whole buttermilk that still has fat in it) mixed with 2 large eggs Dredge: 2 cups White Lily (self-rising) flour mixed with 1 cup stone-ground (medium) cornmeal ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon onion powder, generous pinch of salt, and freshly ground black pepper 2 cups canola oil mixed with 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter (or 1 cup canola oil, 1 cup butter, and 1 cup pork fat) Preparation: 1. Place sliced tomatoes in colander. Salt lightly, and let sit for about 5 minutes to help draw out moisture. Rinse under cool water and pat dry with paper towels.

2. Working one at a time, completely coat each tomato slice in the wash and then in the dredge, gently shaking off excess.

3. In a cast-iron skillet over high heat, bring butter and canola oil to 350ºF (use a candy thermometer). Reduce heat to stabilize. Working three slices at a time, fry the tomatoes until golden brown, turning only once (about 3 to 4 minutes total cooking time). Use a spatula to flip the tomatoes away from you so you don’t get splashed. Transfer each batch to drain on brown paper bags.

➤ Sunsets Sure, sunsets in most places are pretty nice. But Lake Norman summer sunsets are spectacular. There’s nothing quite like relaxing on the patio (preferably with a cold beverage) and watching the sky phase through vibrant colors as the sun drops below the tree tops, and finally beneath the lake. It’s scenes like these that capture the feeling of summer on the lake, and one of the many reasons to love calling Lake Norman home.

My favorite thing about Lake Norman is the fact that it is the signature attraction that binds the community together. There is a reason why residents say they live in Lake Norman. It is the critical first impression to our visitors and the reason why they say they have visited Lake Norman. Whether it’s lounging next to a fire pit on Port City Club’s beach patio, to listening to live music at The Rusty Rudder or taking in a Sunday brunch on North Harbor’s patio, it is the simple things in life while dining at one of the waterfront venues and having Lake Norman as your backdrop.” —Sally Ashworth, executive director of Visit Lake Norman.

➤ Chasing Waterfalls On the northern side of Lake Norman lies Balls Creek, and at the end of that creek is a waterfall. Well worth the excursion, this waterfall is only a 30 to 45 minute paddle away from Long Island Paddle Sports Marina, located at 7774 Hudson Chapel Road in Catawba. Rent a kayak or stand-up paddle board from Long Island Paddle Sports ($35-45 for the full day), pack a cooler, and traverse the calm waters of the north side to see for yourself. www.longislandpaddlesports.com.

➤ All About the Arts Lake Norman communities offer serious support for visual and performing arts. From Open Mic Night at Kadi Fit and the Bella Love Art Crawls to Sanctuary of Davidson’s affordable pieces and the Lake Norman Folk Art Festival, there really is something to interest everyone. If performance art is more your speed, don’t miss the numerous outdoor concerts this season like Symphony in the Park, Concerts on the Green, Music on Main, and Friday After Five. Once summer has come and gone, look forward to theater performances by Davidson Community Players and concert series by Davidson College. All year long there will be arts events to fill your calendar.

➤ Shining Stars Living further away from the city lights has one very clear advantage—low light pollution. Outside around Lake Norman offers some brilliant views of the night sky, making stargazing an activity worth checking out. For prime star viewing, wait for a moonless night, and the further away from the power plant, the better. You may just spot a shooting star.

➤ Fancy Footwork

Ballroom lessons are no longer reserved solely for engaged couples to practice their first dance. Ballroom dancing has seen a rise in popularity, and the Lake Norman area is no different. One studio, Dynamic Ballroom, is stepping out and hosting bi-weekly social dance parties on Fridays, complete with appetizers, beer and wine, and a DJ playing a variety of tunes from swing to salsa. Strut your stuff, practice your moves, and meet new people—all while having fun. The dance party starts at 8 p.m. and is $10 per person ($5 if you attend the group class before the party). 9611 Sherrill Estates Road, Huntersville. 704-206-9321. www.dynamicballroom.com.

➤ Get Away One of the best views of Lake Norman comes from your own campsite on the water’s edge at Lake Norman State Park in Troutman. A sunrise over the lake and the smell of bacon on the campfire make for a getaway that’s not far away. And at just $20 a night, it’s a bargain! Tent or trailer camping is available. The park also has its own lake where you can fish. Pedal boats and canoes are available for rent. www.ncparks.gov/ Visit/parks/lano/main. php. —Allison Andrews JULY 2015 lakenormanmagazine.com

➤ Hunting for Treasure While there isn’t actually gold buried at the lake, there is a trove of stores specializing in antiques. Stroll through these favorites to find previously loved treasures: Lake Norman Antique Mall 467 East Plaza Dr., Mooresville 704-799-8767 American Classic Antiques 106 North Broad St., Mooresville 704-663-3377 Lost and Found Vintage Mall 101 South Broad St., Mooresville 704-664-1977 Main Street Antiques and Design Gallery 500 Main St., Mooresville 704-746-3636 The Rumor Mill Market 217 Depot St., Davidson 704-765-1663 Oak Street Mill Antiques 19725 Oak St., Cornelius 704-895-2653 Terrell Country Store 9247 Sherrills Ford Road, Terrell 828-478-5500

I’d have to say the one thing I really enjoy is the beautiful and diverse selection of homes on the lake. Since I started selling real estate (bigsellshomes.com), I’ve been lucky enough to show some of these homes to clients. This lake has some beautiful homes on it that were built with great pride and enjoyed by families who cherish their time in them. Family time is also something I love seeing on the lake. I remember growing up and spending time on the lake, tubing or hanging out on the boat. They are some of the best memories I have with my mom, dad, and brother. Now seeing other folks enjoy the lake and make those memories is an awesome experience. Of course you can’t forget the great food and entertainment. From breakfast at Midway on the north side of the lake, or lunch and dinner at The Landing at the Lake Norman Motel off Slanting Bridge Road, and late night Coronas with live music with Early Ray or Simplified at the Rusty Rudder. No matter where you are on Lake Norman, there is fun and great food to be found!” —Big Sexy, radio DJ and host of The Big Sexy Show on The New 103.7.

➤ Fantastical Flavors

➤ Farm Fresh Everyday You don’t have to wait for the weekend to get farm fresh eggs, bottled milk, or great produce. Josh’s Farmers Market in Mooresville is open seven days a week! The market has grown so much that this season they expanded to make room for more. The seafood is pulled from the water along the Carolina coast on Thursdays and is for sale Friday and Saturday. Parking is a little tricky at the Williamson Road location, but the products, prices, and friendly service make it worth it. www.joshsfarmersmarket.com. —Allison Andrews

With all the outdoor concerts, movies, and events going on this summer around the lake, there will be tons of popcorn to be had. Spice up this favorite snack by ditching traditional butter for one of the 151 flavors of gourmet popcorn sold at Tastebuds Popcorn in Mooresville. Sweet and savory flavors from this spot include wasabi ranch, s’mores, and raspberry margarita. You get two free samples, so use them wisely. 115 Plantation Ridge Road, Mooresville. 704-663-4636.

➤ Raft Up

TOP PHOTO BY NATE DAVIS, COURTESY OF LKNFUN.COM

Party on the lake? Yes, please. On Lake Norman, we do it by tying up boats to make a personal spot—typically by the sandbar. Groups around Lake Norman hold official raft ups for its members, though there are some public raft up events. While tying up can be fun, remember safety first. The Lake Norman Marine Commission has regulations on rafting that apply to these events. To get up to speed (and to avoid a fine), check out the ordinance at www.lnmc.org/lkn/regulations.

➤ Treats To-Go

➤ Brain Games

There’s no better way to take advantage of the pictureperfect summer weather than dining outside. While there are plenty of al fresco dining options around Lake Norman, take a different route and go for a picnic basket to enjoy at a favorite outdoor park or dock. Don’t know where to start with packing your own? No worries, Millstone Bake House and Provisions has you covered. With at least a few hours notice, you can rent a picnic basket filled with cheeses, charcuterie, and wine. Choose from themed baskets like Spanish, French, Italian, or American, or customize a basket with personal favorites. Basket rentals require a $20 deposit that is repaid upon return of the basket. Prices of basket contents vary. 208 S. Main St., Davidson. 704-895-7836. www.millstonemeadowsfarm.com

While just going to some of the bars around Lake Norman is enough for a fun evening, add a little excitement to your experience by participating in trivia night. When there are prizes on the line (and beverages to be consumed), you never know what random facts might just put you in the lead. Here are a few of the area’s trivia nights: Summit Coffee Mondays at 7:30 p.m. 128 S. Main St., Davidson 704-895-9090

Harvey’s Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. 13812 Cinnabar Place, Huntersville 704-947-5080

➤ The People The majority of the people up here are pretty down to earth and comfortable in their own skin. I like eating out here at the lake, and I especially like being able to wear shorts and flip flops out to a nice dinner without getting funny looks. I like the casual atmosphere of just about all activities and events —I enjoy conversations with the many people I encounter and learning a bit about them and their backgrounds. The lake is more of a community than we get credit for. City life seems much more impersonal. Maybe it’s just me, but I enjoy walking through the local grocery store and running into multiple acquaintances.”

➤ The Star Treatment You can get an Uptown movie experience without the traffic at Our Town Cinemas in Davidson. The cozy cinema replaces traditional seating with Bistro tables. Forget the usual popcorn and hot dogs. You can eat all kinds of food while you watch a first run movie. The theater partners with chefs from Healthy Home Market, The Egg, and Brickhouse Tavern to offer pizza, wraps, and quesadillas. Plus you can get wine and beer on draft at the snack bar. www.ourtowncinemas.com. —Allison Andrews

➤ No Need for Speed(boats)

Andre Gange (left) conducting emergency response training in Anniston, AL.

➤ Be Prepared From the catastrophic loss of 9/11 to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Andre Gagne has responded to every national disaster since 1997. Gagne is the COO of Next Level Readiness in Huntersville, as well as a firefighter, tactical paramedic, and federal disaster responder. “I’m passionate about saving people’s lives,” he says. After decades of traveling to areas ravaged by severe weather and acts of terrorism and helping people who have lost everything, Gagne says he became acutely aware that, as a culture, we’re grossly underprepared for life-and-death emergencies. “This ranges from education to the equipment and tools we need to help save and sustain ourselves,” he says. These kind of on-the-front-line experiences prompted him to open Next Level Readiness shortly after moving to the Lake Norman area from New Hampshire in 2010. Originally it was a consultation and training business, but then Gange opened a retail location in 2013, and last year expanded into a new 1,100-square-foot space. The store sells a variety of products including first aid kits and emergency evacuation kits, which contain items such as food, water, and purification systems. There are also gadgets to help you navigate and survive in the wild. Flex your inner survivalist by taking one of the educational courses Gagne offers in subjects like gun safety, first aid, urban survival medicine, and self-defense. “Our classes are based on real-world experience,” he says. “We’re trying to change a culture of disinterest and apathy and teach people they don’t have to be afraid. It’s all about being prepared.” — Sam Boykin

While pontoon boats and powerboats tend to dominate the waters of Lake Norman, those who would rather hoist a sail aren’t left out. Lake Norman Community Sailing in Huntersville offers youth and adult lessons, open sailing for pass holders, and private lessons. The best way to see if sailing is right for you is to sign up for one of the group’s social sails, which occur on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. The social sails are set up in a racing format to mimic what you would see in a real sailing regatta, just without the pressure of actually having to race. Get your feet wet to see if sailing is right for you. Blythe Landing Park, 15901 NC Hwy 73, Huntersville. 704-947-7245. www.nccsailrow.org.

➤ Sip and Savor Tucked away in the back of a store is the wine bar at Lake Norman Cottage, next to the North Harbor Club restaurant. The Wine Room within the shop functions as a full wine bar, offering current releases and new arrivals. Pour glass and peruse the gifts, or schedule a private party or tasting with a dockside view of Lake Norman. The best way to experience everything Lake Norman Cottage has to offer is the weekly wine tastings every Friday and Saturday starting at 6:00 p.m. Lake views, wine, and shopping—what more do you need? 200-A North Harbor Place, Davidson. 704-237-3629. www.lakenormancottage.com.

➤ Chilling Out Beat the heat this summer at Mooresville’s Penguin Palace. This quaint spot features old-fashioned shaved ice (and a ton of it) in a wide array of flavors such as cherries and cream, raspberry colada, root beer, and sno cream. Mix flavors to your heart’s content—you can even add actual homemade cream with whipped cream and evaporated milk for $0.50 extra. Open Monday through Saturday, noon until 8:00 p.m. Cash only. 1653 Mecklenburg Hwy, Mooresville. 704-402-0186. LNM

Family Fare Davidson’s newest restaurant is a true sibling effort that yields authentic Mexican cuisine. by JENNY BRULE • photos by MICHAEL C. HERNANDEZ

“To us, Mestizo means fusion: Fusion of flavors, cultures, and people!” Alicia Ramirez, 46, says. We are sitting around a table in the colorful dining room of the new Mexican restaurant that she owns in Davidson with her sister, Lupita Barrera, 49, brother-in-law, Sergio Barrera, 54, and brother Humberto Olea, 56. Lupita continues, “My sister and I always had this dream to own a restaurant together. When our children were babies, we would push them in their strollers through Davidson. We knew that this was where our restaurant should be.” Ramirez adds, “I live in Davidson now with my son and we love the community.” Owning and running a restaurant wasn’t just a far-off dream—all four of the owners have worked in the restaurant business for nearly two decades. Eighteen years ago, Ramirez was co-owner of Monterey’s in Mooresville (now named Charanda’s). “Lupita, Sergio, Humberto, and I all worked there. We were managers, servers, bartenders, dishwashers— we did whatever needed to be done,” Ramirez recalls. For Mestizo the family asked their good friend and Acapulco native, Raul Ortegon, 43, to be executive chef.

Precious Space It was on one of the sisters’ walks through Davidson last year that they decided to stop into Town Hall to ask about the retail space adjacent to the post office on Main Street that had stood empty for years. Lupita says, “The woman said, ‘You know what? That space is available!’ It was lucky timing.”

The sisters showed their project idea to the property’s owner, Tom Clark, and he was interested. “Initially, he liked our idea because it is very much a family business. And then we cooked the foods we wanted to feature in Mestizo for him and he was even more interested,” says Ramirez.

Authentic Mexican “We wanted to feature the foods that we actually eat,” Lupita Barrera explains. Her sister continues, “Where we are from [Mexico City] there is no such thing as a burrito.” Mestizo’s food highlights bold flavors that are healthy. “Instead of traditional lard, we use coconut oil or olive oil in our cooking. And everything is fresh, fresh, fresh—we don’t even have a freezer here,” says Ramirez. Mestizo has taken the best, most vibrant flavors of Mexico and given their traditional, family recipes a healthy twist. There are plenty of gluten-free and vegetarian options, lots of fresh seafood, beautiful soups, and salads. Lunch is a steal—a torta (Mexican sandwich) and a cup of soup or side salad is just $10. The Salmon al Nopal (grilled salmon with lobster sauce served over freshly-made cactus salad and sautéed squash blossoms) became instantly popular with diners and is the most expensive dish on the lunch menu at $12. They also feature the more triedand-true fajitas (chicken, steak, seafood, or veggie) served sizzling with warm tortillas and beans for $9 to $12, plus a plethora of entrée salads. Dinner is even more appetizing, as it includes most of the lunch dishes (in larger portions) and additional mouth-watering options. Customers love the Mixiote de Pollo (half a chicken seasoned with spices and citrus, wrapped in banana leaves and slowly steamed for hours) for $19. Another menu star is the Chamorro a la Poblana (pork shank slowly braised in chipotle tinga-style sauce, served with black beans, rice, and warm tortillas) for $24. Brunch is served on Sundays and the full bar specializes in sangria and ultra-fresh margaritas, made with only freshly-squeezed juices. Mestizo’s fusion of a family’s dream and culinary talent creates a delicious dining destination in Davidson. Mestizo 121 N Main St., Davidson (704) 9975933. Open Tuesday-Thursday from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 5-9:30 p.m., Friday-Saturday from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 5-10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. LNM

Community STUDIO Visual artist Justin Christenbery creates much of his work in real time at Lake Norman area community events. by MICHAEL J. SOLENDER • photos by JUSTIN DRISCOLL

Visitors to Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationist’s Earth Day event at LangTree earlier this year were greeted with a special surprise performance from familiar local artist, Justin Christenbery. Christenbery was invited by the event’s organizers to create a live painting for the community-based organization, something he does with such regularity that nearly half his work is done in this fashion. Just three hours after starting with a blank canvas,

Christenbery, 34, completed the work. While festival goers surrounded him peering over his shoulder, Christenbery stood aside revealing a stunning Blue Heron standing in a swirling sea of aquamarine, a small fish impaled on his beak. Christenbery is often seen at community events around his home of Cornelius. He’s a regular at music events such as Second Fridays hosted by local arts promoter Bella Love at venues like Oak Street Mill and D9 Brewing Company.

“The Offering”

Energy from live art

From studio to nursery

“I feed off the energy and the mood of the crowd when I’m doing the live art pieces,” says Christenbery. “It represents the crucible of the artistic experience for me. I’m absorbing the influence and the vibe around me and channeling that into the work. “I love working in the community, working with Bella Love and the town of Cornelius. Folks get to see the creative side of people in their town that they might not ordinarily see.” Christenbery muses while he’s always been an artist, drawing on placemats as a child for example; it took many years for him to discover this. Only after entering a photo-realist style pencildrawn portrait into a high-school contest and taking the top prize did he think seriously about making art his career. “I don’t think I properly appreciated what I could do at that point,” says Christenbery, “I got the inkling that art could be part of my future. It was only through school that I learned about art history, the masters, and the much wider realm of art beyond technique.” Christenbery is an Appalachian State graduate where he studied painting and sculpture. While he sold his first piece in 2005, he acknowledges he’s given many paintings away over the years. “I am an idealist,” he says “I love doing the community oriented work and bringing my talents to community organizations like the Cornelius Cultural Arts Group.”

Visitors to his cramped home studio may be surprised to see the depth and breadth of his work. Swirling, motion filled abstracts sit side-by-side with amazingly lifelike portraits of children he’s been commissioned to paint. His spare bedroom studio is soon giving way to a nursery as Christenbery and his wife are expecting their first child this fall. “I’m moving my studio to the garage,” he says with a laugh, acknowledging excitement about the baby’s arrival and how life will be different for the couple. When asked to characterize his artistic style, the lanky former high school baseball player hesitates and says, “Abstract realism. My process is really my being a tool for viewers to discover and bring their meaning to the work. Life is a creative event. I’m working to synthesize my experiences and fit them through the eye of the needle onto a blank canvas.” Christenbery says while he’s been approached by those interested in representing him, he has chosen not to align with a gallery for now. “I think more people see and experience my work in public venues or in a space like Kadi Fit [the Cornelius fitness studio where his works are on display] than in a traditional gallery,” he says. I don’t consider my work ‘High Art,’ that’s for the critics. My work is for the people.” www.justinchristenbery.com LNM

Less than a four-hour drive from Lake Norman, Greensboro, Ga., is a small, historic town that offers a surprising lineup of luxurious accommodations, championship golf courses, and a bevy of outdoor adventures. Founded in 1786, Greensboro, about 60 miles east of Atlanta, is noted for its revitalized downtown with antebellum homes, churches, quaint shops, and restaurants. But perhaps the biggest attraction is the scenic 19,000-acre Lake Oconee. Georgia Power created the lake in 1979 as a reservoir along the 220-mile Oconee River, and it has helped spur some top-notch attractions. This includes the AAA Five-Diamond Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation (www.ritzcarlton.com). Nestled among towering pine trees along a 30-acre stretch of the Lake Oconee shoreline, the luxury resort offers 251 guest rooms and suites. For something more private, there are spacious lakeside cottages with wood-burning fireplaces and wraparound porches. The resort finished a multi-million dollar renovation this spring, including upgrades to the infinity pool—an ideal spot to sip your favorite cocktail while

gazing out at the serene water. Improvements such as an expanded pool deck with additional seating, renovated children’s pool, and a new taco bar make it one of the resort’s most popular hangouts. The pool is just steps away from the lake, where you can rent Jet Skis and boats or go fishing. When your stomach starts to rumble, the dining options range from a classic steakhouse (if you’re really hungry try the 16-ounce bone-in Delmonico), to a casual bistro specializing in fresh, regional, and organic ingredients. For a little pampering, be sure to check out the luxurious 27,600-square-foot spa, which also underwent renovations, including a new treatment menu, updated relaxation lounges, a 24-hour access fitness center, and manicure/pedicure room. The resort also hosts special events during the summer, such as live concerts, fireworks, and kids’ camps, during which the little ones can go on nature hikes, scavenger hunts, or play sports, while mom and dad enjoy some down time. And at the end of the day, gather around the resort’s big firepit and enjoy complimentary s’mores as the sun sinks below the horizon.

Take a Swing Situated around Lake Oconee are 99 holes of championship golf, and magazines such as GolfWeek and Golf Digest have named the area one of the best golfing destinations in the country. Most of these renowned courses are within the resort communities of Harbor Club, Reynolds Plantation, and Cuscowilla, all of which are part of the new Georgia Golf Trail, which includes 23 resorts across the state. The 1,600-acre Harbor Club (www.harborclub.com) course offers a sweeping lakefront design by esteemed architects Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish. It winds along the Lake Oconee shore, past creeks and several interior lakes. For accommodations, guests can choose from a number of multi-bedroom cottages and townhomes, which have fully equipped kitchens, dining, and living areas. Additional amenities include a junior Olympic swimming pool and tennis courts. The 15,000-square-foot clubhouse offers full-service dining, a golf shop, locker rooms, and a fitness center. Also be sure to stop by the new Boathouse at Harbor Club, which has a general store, fishing gear, and mouth-watering barbecue that is smoked onsite. The Boathouse also has a boat ramp and community dock where you can rent kayaks and Jet Skis. Reynolds Plantation (www.reynoldsplantation.com) boasts the first golf course built on Lake Oconee, which was designed by master architect Bob Cupp and unveiled in 1986. It features a variety of holes that wind through naturally wooded areas and rolling hills. Other Reynolds Plantation courses include designs by legends Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio. Reynolds Plantation has 3- and 4-bedroom cottages with screened-in porches and golf course views. Guests can also enjoy a pool, tennis courts, playground, athletic field, croquet court, driving range, and the new lakeside park and pavilion. Finally, Cuscowilla (www.cuscowilla.com) is a residential and resort community in a beautiful natural setting. Accommodations include golf cottages, lake villas, and romantic, Mediterranean-style Lodge Villas. The lakeside golf course is situated along 700 rolling acres and offers a number of challenging holes. LNM

L

ake Norman resident Linda Carper took this photo from her backyard in Northview Harbour in Sherrills Ford. The sun was setting and had a rare fiery glow that was breathtaking – I had to capture it,” says Carper. “Lake Norman is full of beautiful scenery!” Carper takes photos for pleasure and uses a Canon camera.
