I’ve always been interested in fashion and I like the idea of being young in a big city so New York seemed like a natural fit. New York is endlessly inspiring to me, whether it be the people inside it or the interesting little places that I stumble upon. I think New York has had a huge effect on my aesthetic and my personal style already in the 2 years that I’ve been here. I honestly don’t know exactly why but I decided I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was 6. I’ve always been interested in fashion; even before I could speak my mom says I picked out my own clothes. I think I like fashion because I’m interested in people and I think fashion is a way of communication and it’s a direct reflection of who we are as a society and as individuals. I usually look to music and musicians for my personal style inspiration. I think music and fashion are intrinsically connected because they are both forms of expression and communication, so if you’re interested in one you kind of have to be

interested in the other. I’m particularly interested in the way that rock stars, whether they be from the 60’s or today, present them selves. They just always manage to seem effortlessly cool but also make a statement. No one but Keith Richards could pull off velvet pants and a cheetah print blazer, The Beatles wore turtlenecks like no other, and no one can wear ripped jeans like the Ramones or Matt Healy. I would say my aesthetic is minimal with an edge. I like clean lines and simple neutral colors but I also like a little bit of chaos or distress. I like the balance between perfect and imperfect, clean and messy. I think Alexa Chung, Camille Rowe, Jane Birkin and Kate Moss are the coolest ladies on the planet. They inspire my aesthetic, with not only clothes but within my mood boards and how I design. The mood wall, or better yet, the “Vibes” wall on my bedroom wall is a perfect gathering of my aesthtic within photos.

Remember all the things we wanted when we grew up? Back then - when we were young - our dreams had no limits. We thought we could have everything, and anything, which all in all made us feel free. Because of this, positivity came easy, and our imagination ran wild with the endless amount of inspiration we could gather. There were no impossibilities and even it maybe our dreams were more beautiful to inhabit than reality, we never felt guilty about it. We were brave and bold, and naÎve enough to believe we had capacity for it all. I am not sure how it happens but for many of us, there’s a temptation to lose sight of our grand plans. In growing up, we edit things back a little, we rationalise and do what is expected of us until one day we take a hard look at our dream and realise it has become too conservative, or worse, that it no longer exists. The older we get, the harder it is to find inspiration within every day life. Channeling the younger, free years of childhood, this issue is a gathering of positive vibes that I am personally attracted too. Hopefully, this will inspire you back to your dream.

want to create images that are explained through the objects I use and the color that identifies it. I still dont know a lot about my own work, being that I always change things, but something I can not shake is color. Cause its the fucking tits. But I want viewers to look at my still life photography and be mezmorized by the overwhelming colors and geometric shapes and refelctive material. Even in my portatiure, I convey my model as an object, and ‘dehumanize them. I fucking love color. I fucking love shapes. I fucking love objects and shooting people as if they are one. I have many photographers and artist that are inspirations of mine. to name a few: Mark Peckmezian, Barbara Kasten, William Eggelston, Lucas Blalock, James Welling, and Vasa Mihich. I guess what really inspires me about these artist and mainly photography in general is that it is always changing. The artists I listed above, their individual works itself doesnt

change but all theses artist deal with different types of methods of approcahing there work by using color to emplify it. For example Barbarba Kasten takes 3d shape and puts them into interior spaces making unbelievable photos. Basically photography inspires me because it is being transformed this very second and becoming not just photography, but exapanding the media itself. I love photography and its expansion. Color is amazing...suck my dick. I came to NYC mainly cause I wanted a change. I grew up in the west coast and just wanted to experience the city. I also came here having not that much knowledge about photography; I kinda just applied to Parsons last minute thinking I wouldn’t get it and then I did and I just moved. I have learned so many artists by just being in the city and seeing museums, shows, exhibits, etc. Low key but NYC is chill.

Hilary here. Nevada born, Canadian bred, and New York loved. I make art to make sense of happenings in the every day life that I forever am finding fascinating. A lot of this work is self reflective, I see them as refined, processed diaries. bits of my life I only hope to remember well. Currently attending Parsons The New School For Design in Lower Manhattan.

A large majority of my interest lies in walking the line between real life and and art practice. I strive to use materials of everyday life to create a conversation around it.

Q&A VIBES

Why did you choose to go to design school? Since I was a child, I loved painting, drawing and expressing myself through art. But being a business and economics major in high school, I never got to explore my interests. Design School turned out to be the best option to enhance my business skills while discovering and exploring my passion for design. What is your favorite thing about New York? New York is a very fast paced and demanding city - It expects you to be on your toes and work hard at all times. At the same time, it is the perfect place to unwind and relax. This quality of being easy going and hard at the same time is what attracts me to New York. New York is also one place where an individual would never get bored. What would you say your style is like? Girly, Feminine, Playful, Fun, Cute. Where do you get your inspiration? Current events happening around me, people and their behavior and society in general.I love looking at photographs also, because they can create compositions that I may not of thought of before. Favorite thing to do in New York City? Exploring new places. Eating at new restaurants and shopping. Going to museums. Day brunching and drinking with friends! Okay, so what are your favorite spots then? Sushi Samba, Sushi of Gari, Hakkasan, Tao, Jaiya Thai,

Jin Fong, Intermix, Zara, BCBG Maxazria, shops in meatpacking and Chelsea, local thrift stores and vintage stores! VIP Room, Lavo, Avenue, and Bagatelle. Do you have a favorite quote you live by? Problems or successes, they all are the results of our own actions. Karma. The philosophy of action is that no one else is the giver of peace or happiness. One’s own karma, one’s own actions are responsible to come to bring either happiness or success. A quote by Steve Jobs - “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, and karma, whatever.”

“Mayur Black Marker Pen 2013.

Madhubani paintings have been done traditionally by the women of villages around the present town of Madhubani and other areas of Mithila. The painting was traditionally done on freshly plastered mud walls and floors of huts, but now it is also done on cloth, hand-made paper and canvas. The peacock, which is the National Bird of India, signifies grace, beauty and mysticism. This is done with black marker pen on A2 size paper.

“Technology and Man Oil and Acrylic Colors 2013.

We approach that epitome of civilization where our thoughts seamlessly blend into the world around us. Where our collective genius is much more than we can ever attain individually. I am not an individual. I am a gear in the machine. The gears of my mind are inextricably linked to ones around me. Our civilization’s pinnacle has somehow managed to push me into the depths of a world without my individuality. But every once in a while those gears in my mind manage to delink themselves. They rotate freely with a mind of their own, in an encumbered space. Brain has been the fountainhead of intelligence that has led to numerous inventions through the ages and is the moving force behind the world that we live in and cherish so dearly. The interlocking gears represent the intersection of many streams of science, arts and philosophy that are shaping our lives. The seamlessly moving gears also represent transfer and sharing of intellectual property to further enhance the quality of life enjoyed by the modern human being. The whole canvas represents a climax of modernity, innovation, intelligence and a shared future. The lines on the face at first glance looks like a neon glyph signifying an electrifying presence, a vibrant thought process, but it also points to worry lines that the modern times are bringing on to mankind.

If life were color, you’de be blue. I’de drown forever in a sea of thoughts, escaping ground of doubt, knowing that if I swam far enough you’de be the only one surrounding me.

I’m not a very intelligent person, and you’ve got to be a fucking genius to learn from other people’s mistakes, because you’ve got to be a very smart man to learn from your own.

1. Where do you get most of your inspiration from?

Q&A VIBES

I draw inspiration from my surrounding environment. Anything can be manipulated and made beautiful or ugly. It’s the way that you convey conviction that makes another see what you see. 2. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Give me a cigarette, a cup of coffee, and thoughts that’s all I really need. 3. How do you envision your future? I live elaborately. I will work so I can always enjoy free moments to the limits of every boundary. I see a life of calm when with loved ones and mountains on my career path. I want to rise and fall like breath coming from smoked inhaled

lungs. I work as an intern 24 hours a week, I go to school full time, and work in hospitality. Interning has helped me learn more about the industry. 5. Why did you choose to move to New York? New York has driven people. I see it in people’s eyes. We are all here because we want something else. We are willing to fight. We are willing to live, New York. 6. And off of that, what are you most disappointed about in NYC? I hate the urine smells in a subway. It’s s characteristic of public space I can do without. With that stated, I’m most surprised on how networking is easier than expected. It is refreshing, yet a comforting feeling.

By nature, I am a very indecisive person. When I was accepted into Parsons, I thought I was going to study fashion design. During the course of my foundation year, I went through the options of interior design, product design and communication design. I found that illustration was at heart of every design major. But that was the idea of illustration and the major has seriously kicked my butt. Other than traditional painting and drawing, the course includes animation, toy design and different printing methods. I have never regretted taking the major but the process has of course included a num ber of breakdowns... (just like any other major at Parsons.)

I mostly get my inspiration from photographs. I love using coffee table books and the works of other visual artists I see in galleries, museums and exhibitions in cities all around the world to inspire my sense of color balance, composition and patterns. But my biggest source of inspiration comes from instagram! I think it is the most effective medium that doubles as a portfolio platform and a social media networking site so it allows you to view the work of artists globally.

86

My favorite memories are more of being in New York for art school than of art school itself. Of course it includes pulling all nighters with friends, taking naps on school desks to take breaks from worrying about whether or not we will be able to finish the project, but it mostly includes typically New York things like walking home drunk with my heels in my hands at 6 am knowing that I have a class in two hours.

89

I can’t really say I have a set aesthetic. I love exploring and finding new ways to com municate subjects which includes im bibing and using the influences of cultures all around the world. On one hand I’m obsessed with Islamic traditions and the aesthetic of the Middle East, but on the other, I also focus on the consumer culture of US. Color is a big focus of mine. I think there is a certain advantage to not having a specific skill set for just one aesthetic. It gives you the freedom to appeal to a varied audience depending on your work. It also gives you the ability to appeal to certain clients with a selective portfolio that may appeal to their style more. I think being an illustrator in a global market means to not restrict yourself to only one language and we have that advantage at the age of 20.
