parallel magazine every story as two sides.

Parallel is a biannual bookzine, with each issue having two parts to its completion. One side a collection of thoughts, inspiring imagery and innovative ideas delving into the unknown. The other, fashion at its purest form introducing practical components to the reader such as trend, styling, pattern cuttings and designer profiles. Androdgynous in nature, with hints of kinesthetics at the core of its design, Parallel Magazines primary aim is to not only fuel the minds of the fashion conscious through beautiful yet curious imagery, but also educate them so they are brimming with useful knowledge and awareness. Ensuring that the reader is continually inspired.

thekooples.co.uk Founded through couples

and rock bands, this ubiquitously cool website delves into the ever fascinating world of couples and fashion. The Kooples gather their inspiration from the codes of rock music. Deriving from France, this site not only sells clothing items tailored by the esteemed Norton and Sons from Saville Row, but explores couples considered to be ‘Kooples’ aka duos of people with interesting lifestyles and of course style. Parisien with lots of personality.

Machine-A

Machine-A is an independent shop and gallery space, located at 60 Berwick St London. Previously a 1950’s Soho tailors, this somewhat controversial (one of Machine-A’s initial window displays included a knitted man masturbating) space has become infamous within the area. The key reasoning behind owner Stavros Karelis’s idea is to showcase emerging designer talents without aesthetic compromise. Machine-A people are those who like to ‘create, and not be created by fashion’.

Mast brothers chocolate The Mast Brothers are not just chocolate

makers but craftsmen. Hailing from New York City, they make around 1000 bars a day, personally wrapping each and everyone. They do not use any conventional means of making, but prefer old school techniques and equipments. The product is stripped down and natural, meaning that the buyer can actually taste the difference between cocoa beans from different areas. Another thing about Mast Brothers is, their style. Both fashioning rather large beards and tattoo sleeves, they don’t just pay particular attention to their crafts, but their appearance and even surroundings (the factory) are full of character with carved ships everywhere, dark wooden furniture’s and shelves and shelves of random inanimate objects. Fantastically intriguing to say the least.

take ivy

Derived from American ‘Ivy Leagues’, Take Ivy was a treasure for fashion insiders namely from Japan in the 1960’s. Re-issued and translated, this beautiful little find is simply a collection of candid photographs taken on the campuses of America’s privileged Ivy League Universities. Regardless of their actions, the subjects of this pictorial compilation are flawlessly dressed in some of the finest American created garments of the era. Proof that preppy styles may actually transcend through time and trends.

vintage at goodwood Vintage at Goodwood is an annual

celebration of artistic British cool from the 40’s right through to the 80’s. Celebrating the amalgamation of music, fashion, film, art, dance and design. With performances both from emerging talent such as the Noisettes, and past legends such as Ronnie Wood, and tailors present to alter vintage purchases, hairdressing salons as well as Vintage will inspire you to stay glamorous and cultured. It is a true celebration of ‘where we have come from and where our creative culture is taking us to’.

“brilliantlove is a gorgeous, dangerous marinade of passion, art, and ambition that languorously intoxicates the senses.”

Roya Rastegar Tribeca Film Festival This film is plain and simply raw, showcasing every element and every angle of the fiery and stimulating beginnings of a young relationship, A subject that is rarely touched upon, especially within British cinema’s typically prude circle. Brilliantlove stemmed from writer Sean Conway’s fascination with erotology, the study of lovemaking and sexual love. The films two main characters are Noon, a somewhat shy but sexually driven taxidermist, and Manchester a novice photographer who has an addiction to ice pops. Narrated throughout by Noon and her Dictaphone recording of sexual fantasies, tremendously explicit yet truly poetic, Brilliantlove observes Noon and Manchester’s sexually charged relationship during one summer. Continually being documented by Manchester and his array of cameras, Noon becomes the subject of his obsession. No sexual act or lovemaking occurs without photographic documentation. Living away from the world within their own garage space on the edge of a field, Noon and Manchester are able to become engrossed with each other and explore each other’s passion and fantasies on a daily basis. Until Manchester’s photographs are found by a wealthy erotic art dealer and pornographer, and the couple are dragged out of their tranquil surroundings, and launched into the world of art. Cracks begin to form in the relationship, as Manchester is succumbed to bounds of praise for his photos, which are, unbeknownst to Noon, printed and showcased in a gallery. Once Noon realizes that the couples played out sexual fantasies and desires are on display for all to see, she becomes enraged and deeply saddened at Manchester’s lack of regard. Noon is forced to re-evaluate the relationship, and decide whether the love and passion they have for each other will override the feelings of exploitation. Regardless of whether you are uncomfortable with the explicitness of this film or deeply touched by its raw emotion, Brilliantlove will inevitably make you want to fall in love.

“No technique, just instinct, a couple of cheap instamatics and a willing girlfriend.”

Job Title:

FASHION DIRECTOR:

jodie barnes

What do you feel has been the main factor in helping you get where you are today? PERSEVERENCE AND A LOT OF HARD WORK What has been your least favorite fashion movement and why? PROBABLY NU-RAVE. I WAS THERE THE FIRST TIME AROUND SO OBVIOUSLY THERE WILL BE A LEVEL OF DISDAIN FOR IT. I M ALSO NOT KEEN ON GOTH. WHEN IT WAS PLAGIARISED BY FASHION I THOUGHT IT WAS INTERESTING AS IT WAS PURELY ABOUT FASHION. NOW IT HAS BECOME THIS TRIBAL THING IN FASHION, WHICH THINKS IT S ABOUT STYLE – WHICH IT IS NOT. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE EVEN? How do you see fashion being portrayed in the future? FASHION IS ALL ABOUT CHANGE WHEREAS STYLE IS SOMETHING MORE ENDURING. IT’LL BECOME MORE AND MORE ABOUT HOW THEY WORK TOGETHER. I GUESS STYLE WILL BE TRIUMPHANT IN THE END. PEOPLE HAVE LESS AND LESS DISPOSABLE INCOME WITH THE COST OF LIVING, MOBILE PHONE BILLS, GYM MEMBERSHIPS, CABLE TV ETC. SO FASHION BECOMES MORE OF A FRIVOLITY. ALSO, PEOPLE TRAVEL MUCH MORE NOW, SO FASHION, HAS TO RESPOND TO THAT DEMAND. What are the most interesting parts of your profession would you say? I LOVE EVERY ASPECT OF MY WORK (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF ADMIN) FOR VARIOUS REASONS. EVERY WEEK IS DIFFERENT AND I GET TO TRAVEL ALL OVER THE WORLD. I GUESS MY FAVOURITE THING IS TO CONSULT WITH DESIGNERS ON THEIR COLLECTIONS. NOT EVERY STYLIST DOES THAT. Who do you feel is an influential fashion icon in today’s society? HUM, THAT QUESTION WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH EASIER 50 YEARS AGO. Who is the most interesting person you have worked with and why? PROBABLY BRYAN FERRY WHO I SHOT WITH JUERGEN TELLER FOR THE COVER OF THE LAST ISSUE. I THINK IT S AMAZING TO END UP WORKING WITH SOMEONE WHO YOU HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRED What do you look to when you feel the need to be inspired? THE PAPERS, DAILY LIFE, MY FRIENDS – ALTHOUGH THAT SOUNDS A BIT CORNY. Where is the most surreal place your occupation has taken you to? THE JUNGLE IN COSTA RICA What is your fashion reality? (This could be for example, your own personal style, trends, favourite designer, outfit, materials etc) JEANS. DENIM IN GENERAL. I CAN T LIVE WITH OUT IT. Finally, What is your fashion fantasy? (This could be your dream clothing item, trend revival or new idea etc) A MACHINE THAT SCANS YOUR EXACT MEASUREMENTS AND THEN WEAVES A GARMENT WITHOUT SEAMS. THE PERFECT FIT!
