In 2006 we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Maverick Colony. Left: Hervey White founder of the Maverick Art Colony
Hervey White at the at a maverick Festival
The Woodstock Maverick Celebrates 100 years If anyone is an icon for Woodstock it is Hervey White. His image graces the fronts of desks and refrigerators all over town. Alf Evers was writing a biography of his friend and mentor before he died. I feel that Hervey’s persona was a force that supported the peace and love of the Woodstock Festival that took over this village in the 1970’s. It is important in this ever-polarizing America that we reiterate Hervey’s positive view and revive that spirit of cooperation he preached so strongly. It is 100 years since he created his utopian artist’s community on the Maverick challenging the establishment of Byrdcliffe. We welcome those who venture herein to honor his vision. Thank you, Barry Samuels President We celebrate one hundred years of Hervey White and marvel at his Maverick Colony. He did get a Utopia. It was formed by the crystallization of his unique view of life . . . and of his celebration of all human beings, being human. He was a graceful spirit leavened by robust good humor! He set us a “high style.” This is the best of stories . . . now to be seen through a looking glass, over the shoulder, backwards to understanding. Jean Lasher Gaede Historian of the Maverick

Andrée Ruellan, one of
Woodstock’s most beloved treasured artists is a strong supporter of Woodstock arts and member of the Woodstock Artist Association & Museum as well as the Woodstock Guild. Over the years Andrée Ruellan has exhibited in New York’s leading galleries; her work today is dispersed among museums, art centers and private collections. Andrée Ruellan, the daughter of French parents who had moved to New York, was 15 when she first went to the Art Students League of New York in 1920. She lived in Paris until the end of the 1920s when she met John W. Taylor in the spring of 1929 and married three months later. They settled in an old farmhouse Taylor had previously acquired in the hills of Shady above the village of Woodstock. Beginning in 1941 she has been exhibiting regularly at the Kraushaar Galleries in New York. Honors that came to Ruellan along the way included a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1950 and, in Woodstock, the artists’ community’s highest prizes, the Sally JacobsPhoebe Towbin Award of 1981 and the Yasuo Kuniyoshi Award, 1994.

. . . the famous little town that inspires an independent spirit and an artful lifestyle! The Woodstock Chamber of Commerce and Arts was formed to nurture and promote our businesses, artists and cultural community. This guide lists many of our top attractions, so that visitors with limited time can make informed choices about what to see—and where to eat, stay and shop while exploring the marvelous array of resources offered by this small village with a big heart. The wealth of Woodstock is reflected in its wide range of arts organizations, its scenic beauty and its rich history. There is a Lucinda Knaus tradition handed down to us from the Native Americans that visitors to this special place are fated always to return. If this is your first visit to Woodstock, we hope you enjoy your stay and we look forward to seeing you again soon. If you’re already returning, welcome back!

Lucile Blanch and husband Arnold Blanch, came to Woodstock in 1923 and met Hervey White who encouraged the couple to join the Maverick. In the bohemian enclave, the Blanches presided over an openair restaurant grandly named The Intelligentsia. Lucile baked pies and cooked on a kerosene stove. Arnold hunted squirrels and rabbits and procured vegetables and potatoes for the stew. Together they provided sustenance for the Maverick’s regular crew of artists, musicians, writers and actors. Lucile lived in her home at the Maverick Art Colony until her death in 1981
