A half-century ago, America was ensconced in a turbulent, unpopular war that led to social, political and economic unrest. Sounds like today, doesn’t it? The ’60s vibe of love attracted a dedicated group of Imagine the hippies who spurred a revolution celebrating life, love and music that Peace & Love continues to this day. Three days of peace, love and music with a half-million, mostly young people who shared the same values and ideals rocked the world and solidified our small town as progressive and unconventional. San Francisco was the hippie capital of the world but Woodstock, nestled under the forests of Overlook Mountain, was a quiet creative epicenter that had attracted peaceniks and artists since Woodstock Music & Art Fair Poster the mid-1800s. Frederich Church

Hudson River School with Thomas Cole and Frederick Church drew many whose interests were to capture the tranquility and spirit of the landscape, depicting a feeling of serenity and love.

1969 was also the year David Bowie hit stardom by fusing rock and theater, synthesizing a new art form with creativity, hard work and perseverance. A true original, Bowie reinvented himself over more than five decades, changing musical styles and influencing numerous rock and other pop artists. Bowie passed away January 11, 2016, just days after his 69th birthday. David, his wife Iman and daughter Alexandria had made Woodstock their home several years earlier. See a tribute to him on page 6.

Scores of other musical legends, including Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, searching to find a community of like-minded musicians, poets and artists, settled in Woodstock during the ’60s. Barry Samuels writes a brief history of Woodstock and rock on page 14.

Whether these creative beings chose our area for the green mountains, green movements, peaceful vibes or cultural history, they were most certainly drawn to a respect for differences and deeply inspired ideals. “Woodstock is a group of idealists . . . we do not vastly differ from the denizens of the city. We are selected from the city – that is all.

Self-selected and of course, well selected.” wrote Hervey White, founder of the Maverick Art Colony in 1905, and co-founder of Byrdcliffe in 1902. Woodstock is, after all, a microcosm of New York City in the country.

“Of all the Fifty-three years ago at age 16, when asked to state his future occupation, art forms, David Jones said “I want to be a pop Rock is the idol.” After living in London, Berlin, living art New York City and Los Angeles, form.”

David Bowie and his wife Iman bought property in Ulster County and soon afterward purchased a house in Woodstock where, earlier this year, our aristocratic king of glitter rock died 2 days after his 69th birthday and the release of his last album. We mourn his passing.

David Bowie (Jones) was an artist working in rock, punk, fashion, film, poetry, performance art and painting who once said, “Of all the art forms, Rock is the living art form.” One of the greatest and most influential rock figures and enigmatic, generous singer/songwriters, Bowie inspired hundreds of pop and rock stars, including Madonna, Nirvana, Lady Gaga and U2 as well as many not-so-famous creatives who felt out of place, out of synch, or just plain odd.

Bowie’s daring projection of androgyny and displays of sexual ambiguity spread like a salve for the alienated misfits during a time of culturally limited bandwidths of acceptability. His brilliant experimentation with chameleon-like characters transformed and provoked identity-curious young men in the ’70s, including my late son Scott Andrew. Scott explored different personas through dressing up his self, cousins and neighbors in plays, films and musicals from age 7, and later during drag performances in New York, Paris, London and Berlin before becoming a successful make-up artist. Bowie’s boldness and innovation delivered magic to Scott and others who identified themselves as something other than the norm. David Bowie made it acceptable to be different.

Other than the norm was what Bowie personified. Starting with celebrity in 1969 with his first hit song Space Oddity, in alien guise, followed by make-up and orange hair as Ziggy Stardust, Bowie went on to write Suffragette City; Heroes; Life on Mars; Changes; Fame (with John Lennon); Golden Years; Rebel, Rebel; Jean Genie; Let’s Dance; Modern Love and scores of other songs.

Although Bowie did not admit to autobiography, many writers are making connections to his life and lyrics, especially in his final, 25th album, Blackstar – and in the musical Lazarus, which played on Broadway and which he co-wrote: 8

I see right so wide, so open-hearted, it’s pain . . .

We were born upside down, born the wrong way ’round . . .

Yes, David, everybody knows you or will know you even though you wrote, “Fame: what you get is no tomorrow.”

My imagination pictures David as Major Tom in space with my son Scott, dressing up and discussing divine choreography with the aliens . . . you are our starmen, playing in the sky and perhaps visiting us occasionally at Magic Meadow on Meads Mountain in Woodstock.

Woodstock has always provided a fertile field for rebel musicians who raised the volume and challenged the status quo. Our town’s musical legacy is marked by worldchanging village denizens like Bob Dylan, the members of The Band – especially Levon Helm – and David Bowie. The hills around us are dotted by state-of-the-art recording studios – a constant beehive of musical innovation. And of course, the 1969 Woodstock festival has been seminal in shaping the soundscape of our lives.

That musical dynamism couldn’t be more in play in 2016.

Today’s young generation of gifted and savvy musicians are celebrating their voices and perfecting their riffs at an innovative and exciting musical venture: The Woodstock Music Lab. Located a few miles outside the village, at the recently acquired former Zena Elementary School, the Music Lab is the brainchild of Paul Green of the Paul Green Rock Academy (aka founder of the original School of Rock) and 1969 Woodstock festival promoter Michael Lang.

These successful visionaries have big plans in the works to rock the future.

The Woodstock Music Lab fills the void left by both conventional music academies and the recording industry and offers post-secondary school students the training to write, produce, engineer, arrange and market music in today’s challenging professional environment. In other words, how to make a smart living with their talent and passion. The curriculum will focus on rock and include punk, funk, soul and hip-hop and feature a renowned faculty. Students will master more than one instrument and performance opportunities abound.

Along with acoustically sound classrooms and studios, the Lab will host a dynamic concert venue for students and visiting artists. Plans are underway to convert a section of the building into the largest recording studio on the East Coast designed to attract the bigger bands and bigger names.

All this and more in the name of providing young artists with a bounty of opportunity for collaboration and mentorship.

Closer to the center of town, the old Colony has been sold to singer, songwriter Neil Howard. In the tradition of the classic American music halls, the all-new “Colony”

will be an entertainment and dining space worthy of the Woodstock community and its history. “Woodstock is a town with such an amazing artistic history and home to a phenomenal array of artists and musicians. We want to give them all a new stage – a new canvas to create and grow and inspire their audiences,” says new owner Neil Howard.

The Bearsville Theater, located 2 miles outside the village center and brainchild of music industry visionary and magnate Albert Grossman opened in 1989 and is now under new management by John Kirkpatrick who says the theater will “book a series of national acts of the same genre of artists as last year: Beirut, Lord Huron, Punch Brothers, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams.”

Most The recent sale of the old Joyous Lake has many in town anxious Saturdays in to hear if it will return as a club season, there with live music. Other venues are also free in town that often showcase live concerts on music are Wok ‘n Roll, Catskill Mt. Pizza, Kleinert James Gallery, the the Green.

At a recent concert at the Woodstock Music Lab, dozens of Paul Green Rock Academy’s colorful pre-college rock stars (and future Music Lab students) tuned up and let loose. They confidently stepped onto the stage and belted out rock classics to the cheers of their peers in a packed auditorium. Their energy unstoppable, their drive and talent well nurtured – the future of Woodstock rock is alive and ascending!

First of all, everyone should read Paul Smart’s fascinating and fun book Rock & Woodstock.

It is an anecdotal history of sightings of famous music icons on the streets of Woodstock as well as all those musicians who make or have made their home here.

The folk music invasion was advanced by the Baron of Bearsville, Albert Grossman, who put together with longtime resident Peter Yarrow a group called Peter, Paul & Mary.

A wave of This led to the arrival of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, which led rock and folk to The Band, and that then led musicians to the arrival of Van Morrison, came to which led to Paul Butterfield, etc., until on some evening you might Woodstock in the wake of Dylan find musicians like Fred Neil, John Herald, Eric Weissberg and Artie Traum roaming the aisles of the local grocery store for late-night shopping.

A wave of rock and folk musicians came to Woodstock in the wake of Dylan and recorded at the Bearsville Studio, artists such as Eric Andersen, Maria Muldaur, Happy and Artie Traum, Billy Faier, Sonia Malkine, and others. New music venues opened with The Joyous Lake and Café Espresso. Marylou Paturel owned the Espresso in the golden Dylanesque years and she tells of one night: she is upstairs with her infant daughter keeping warm by the pipe from the pot-bellied stove below when she hears the haunting sounds of “House of the Rising Sun” rising up being sung by Baez, Dylan, John Sebastian, Johnny Cash, and others. It was a magical moment.

Not only rock but jazz musicians were attracted to Woodstock. Many outstanding artists such as Jack DeJohnette, Carla Bley, Anthony Braxton, Pat Metheny, David Sancious, Warren Bernhardt, Dave Holland, Mike Mainieri, Larry Coryell, Marilyn Crispell and of course the founders of The Creative Music Studio, Karl Berger and Ingrid Sertso. Today you might walk past Cassandra Wilson, Sonny Rollins or others around town.

But it was the wonderful nights of music from The Lake of the ’80s that fueled my joy for the town’s exciting music.

Nights of music from Robbie Dupree and the drumming Parker brothers, from Marc Black, Betty McDonald, John Hall & Orleans and Michael Franks, Black Uhuru, The Defiant Ones with Ras T Asheber and from Dr. John, that kept me up on the weekends. But you had to get by the gatekeeper Lenny to get in.

The Utopia Studio of Todd Rundgren and Grossman’s Bearsville Studio brought many great musicians who played secretly at local venues, like the Rolling Stones, REM, and the Dave Matthews Band. Also many musicians played Woodstock midweek between their gigs in Boston and NYC, bands such as Phish.

Today you might see Donald Fagen of Steely Dan strolling through town, or Graham Parker, Marshall Crenshaw, the B52s’ Kate Pierson, or Gail Ann Dorsey, or Sarah Lee, or Ed Sanders formerly of The Fugs or even Garth Hudson from The Band.

the NY Dolls, Chris Stein from Gone are some greats like Blondie, NRBQ, Jules Shear and Pal Shazar, John Simon, Charles Levon Helm Lyonhart, Tom Pacheco, Teresa Williams and Larry Campbell or Professor Louie & the Crowmatix. Gone are some greats like Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, David Bowie, Richie Havens, Bill Keith, and Johnny Average.

But of all the people who made Woodstock the most famous small town is the formost Michael Lang, who organized a gathering of great music for 3 fantastic rain-soaked days in Sullivan County. He is continuing to influence the music scene in town by partnering with Paul Green of The School of Rock to transform the old Zena elementary school into a world-class music academy.
