This diagram depicts the allocation of land use for parcels in Downtown Boston restored by the “Big Dig,” a project that turned an elevated highway into a 3.5 mile tunnel under the City of Boston. The project, which involved more than 30 years of planning and 12 years of construction, consisted of two major aspects: One, the demolishing and replacing of the six-lane elevated highway with an eight-to-ten-lane underground expressway; and, two, the creation of a two-bridge crossing of the Charles River and Extension of the I-90 Massachusetts Turnpike through a tunnel beneath South Boston and Boston Harbor to Logan Airport, creating an uninterrupted connection from Seattle. The project created over 30 acres of restored open spaces and over 45 parks and major plazas and reunited the neighborhoods of Boston with its waterfront, previously blocked by the elevated freeway.

A CITY OF MAGNIFICENT INTENTIONS
indesign
PIERRE L’ENFANT’S PLAN FOR WASHINGTON, DC
In 1791 Charles L’Enfant was chosen by George Washington to design the national capital. To understand L’Enfant’s vision, we can look to his design inspiration and influences which were firmly in the tradition of the Enlightenment. The plan was visionary – on paper it expressed the hopes and aspirations of a young state. The city has long provided a public forum for the expression of American democracy and historic acts of protest. The city’s monumentality provides a space to ground the country’s creation myth. However, the plan was not without its drawbacks. The plan’s egalitarian aims were also radically at odds with the reality of slavery in America at the time - the White House and parts of Congress were built with slave labour, a reality not reconciled in the narrative of American exceptionalism associated with the city. The city still serves as a profound stage for the expression of democracy, as seen in its history as the site of protest and revolt.

harvard campus map arc map Highlighting Harvard University’s museums and theater buildings, this map serves as a tourist’s guide to exploring the public arts and cultural resources while visiting Harvard’s campus. Bike lanes and walking paths are identified to aid navigation. Calling attention to green spaces, athletic facilities, and libraries as well, this map serves to orient a visitor to other recreational services on campus.

mbta ridership analysis arc map The comparison of total number of people living and working within a 1,000 meter walkshed of each MBTA Station in Cambridge with the daily recorded ridership at each station reveals that some stations have a lot of people around them but have fewer T-riders than the trendline would expect, particularly Porter Square and Kendal/MIT, and, to some extent, Central Square. Some factors that could influence this is that car owndership or bike ridership may be higher in these neighborhoods, which would reduce MBTA ridership. Also, there may be a higher portion of people living and working in the same area that are walking to work rather than riding the T.

neighborhood collage photoshop East Cambridge and Somerville have a historical legacy of industrial manufactuing and therefore a concentration. However there is also a vibrant community working to use the land in new and greener ways, particularly through community gardens and urban agriculture. Somerville was the first city in New England to include an Urban Agriculture Zoning Ordinance, symbolizing the city’s support of these productive landscapes which provide significant social, environmental and economic benefits to the community.

This block redesign proposes to preserve housing that serves elderly citizens and provide a lively urban agriculture-based food/retail community along an under utilized stretch of Washington Street that presently consists of a run down vacant lot and a large parking complex around a Holiday Inn. By creating a new porous block structure facing the busy street with pedestrian access to a large park, art spaces and community garden, this block will become activated by pedestrain activty, especially beause a new Green Line stop will be opening up shortly right at the edge of the proposed site, making this a newly accessible area via public transit and bike (there are protected bike lanes on Washington st.

Including a community kitchen to incubate new culinary businesses and offer cooking and gardening workshops, a community garden, a farmers market space, and productive green rooftops, this plan aims to bring the ecological and social benefits of sustainable urban food production to a block of Somerville’s Inner Belt that is without character and lacks access to fresh local food.

This map depicts census block groups in Cambridge by income tiers in relation to the city’s playgrounds. betweenness analysis rhino una toolbox The UNA betweenness tool can estimate people’s movement flows over the spatial networks of origin and destination points from buildings in Cambridge to the city’s playgrounds. By identifying streets with a predicted footfall of over 500 people from the betweenness analysis, we can make recommendations for areas to prioritize for infrastructure improvements and walkbility. This is a powerful tool to identify how we can design and evaluate our cities’ spatial networks.
