Rabbi GeraldSkolnik andRobinSegal Skolnik Rabbi Gerald C. Skolnik, spiritual leader of The Forest Hills Jewish Center, was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1981. Immediately upon his ordination, he served as Assistant Rabbi of The Forest Hills Jewish Center under the late Rabbi Ben Zion Bokser for almost three years. With Rabbi Bokser?s death in 1984, Rabbi Skolnik assumed the rabbinic leadership of the congregation, and has served in that capacity ever since. In addition to his responsibilities at Forest Hills Jewish Center, Rabbi Skolnik is involved in numerous communal activities. He is a past President of the Rabbinical Assembly, the 1700-member international organization of Conservative rabbis, a Vice President of the Zamir Choral Foundation, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Masorti and Masorti Olami Foundations. He is a past chairman of UJA-Federation?s Committee on AIDS, and a member of its Board of Directors. Additionally, he is the immediate past-Chair of the JWB?s Chaplain?s Council Plenum, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the JCCA. He also serves on the Board of Governors of the New York Board of Rabbis. Rabbi Skolnik has published numerous articles, and he is a frequent blogger for the New York Jewish Week online edition with the Times of Israel. He has lectured extensively throughout the world, and has appeared on national radio and television. His collaborations with the Western Wind Vocal Ensemble on ?The Chanukkah Story,? ?The Birthday of the World: Music and Traditions of the High Holidays,? and ?A Taste of Eternity: A Musical Shabbat,? have received wide critical acclaim. These productions, commissioned by Public Radio International and featured on NPR, feature scripts written by Rabbi Skolnik, and read by Theodore Bikel, Leonard Nimoy, and Tovah Feldshuh.

Robin was born and raised in Bridgeport, CT, and was a proud member of Congregation Rodeph Sholom (not Shalom!), where she attended Hebrew School and was active in USY.and LTF. Her years at Camp Ramah in Palmer forged a life-long relationship with Judaism, and led her to the observant Jewish lifestyle that she lives today. She and Gerry subsequently spent a number of summers on staff at Camp Ramah in the Berkshires. Robin attended Barnard College, where she majored in psychology and graduated in 1976. She spent her sophomore year in Israel at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem ? a year that coincided with the Yom Kippur War. Living through that experience cemented her relationship with Zionism and Israel. That passion remains a powerful force in her life. Following college, Robin attended Columbia University School of Social Work, where she earned her MSSW degree. For the past twenty-two years, Robin has served as the librarian of the Abraham Joshua Heschel Middle School in Manhattan. Her love of both books and children made this a wonderful job for her, in addition to the work she did before ? raising four beautiful children! That work, along with the job at Heschel, continues to this day. Rabbi Skolnik and Robin have four children: Rabbi Hillel Skolnik, who serves as the Rabbi of Tifereth Israel Congregation in Columbus, Ohio, and is married to Rabbi Sharon Barr Skolnik; Leora, a graduate of Barnard College who is married to Rabbi Yonatan Warren, a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy Chaplaincy Corps, currently serving in Norfolk, Virginia; Talya, who attended Barnard College, lives in Brooklyn with her husband, Adam Dicterow, and works for Safe Horizons as a domestic violence victim?s advocate; and Matan, who, after graduating from the University of Michigan and serving in the Peace Corps as an English teacher in the Republic of Guinea for two-and-a-half years, now works for the Tamer Institute for Social Enterprise in the Business School of Columbia University, and is applying to law schools. Rabbi Skolnik and Robin have five grandchildren, Dafna Zahava, Liav Noam and Hadar Eliana, the son and daughters of Hillel and Sharon, and Calanit Batya and Meirav Zemer, the daughters of Leora and Yonatan.

HazzanHenryRosenblum As we find ourselves snowed in again, freezing from the cold while anxiously awaiting our COVID-19 vaccines, we are overjoyed to have something warm and joyous to celebrate. And what a celebration this is: 40 years of exemplary service given lovingly by Rabbi Gerald and Robin Skolnik. They have been a remarkable team, leading by example as a family, as spiritual leaders, as friends and confidants, and so much more. They have enriched our lives, sharing in our joys and sorrows, and always helping us be the best versions of who we might be. They have taught us how to be proud Americans, ardent advocates for (as well as critics of) Israel, supporters of Solomon Schechter schools, Camp Ramah, and the list goes on. As a team and individually, they have enriched our lives beyond measure! On a personal level, Robin and Gerry have been the greatest gifts we could have hoped for: friends, partners, colleagues and extended family. We have traveled life?s path together and are thrilled to be able to share this amazing moment in time with them and with you. This celebration is different from all others because of the times in which we find ourselves, but the feelings we all have would be there under any circumstances. We join you in celebrating these amazing years and these exceptional honorees. May they go from Hayyil el Hayyil. In love and lifelong friendship, Hazzan Henry Rosenblum and Susan Ticker

It has been one year, almost to the day since the world the way we knew it took a wrong turn and threw us off balance. We went into quarantine; our daily routines were completely disrupted, and we were at a total loss as to how to go about our life. One aspect of our life, our community, was completely shut down! But it did not take long for Team Skolnik to mobilize. Using the latest technology and the wisdom of the ages, the Rabbi and Robin got us all together, albeit in little boxes on our electronic devices, for learning, praying and socializing, at a distance, of course. Today we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of Rabbi Gerald and Robin Skolnik at The Forest Hills Jewish Center. We are blessed to have our Rabbis serve in this capacity for many years. We are thankful for this longevity and consider it a testament to the outstanding relationship between Rabbi and congregation! The Rabbi and Robin have been an integral part of our community for all these years. They forged lifelong friendships here in Forest Hills. Their children were born here and grew up with our children, and we celebrated many smachot together, and sadly also shared our sorrows. How appropriate is it that we are celebrating them today! The FHJC dinner dance is an annual event for which we put on our best evening gowns and tuxedos and get together to dine, dance and socialize while celebrating the honorees. Today?s celebration is taking on a somewhat different format. We are celebrating together in a virtual world. Much like our daily meetings we are all in little boxes on a screen. But it is most definitely a celebration! Because we are all in a virtual world we are joined tonight by friends and family of Rabbi Gerald and Robin Skolnik from near and far. From all over the US and from Israel. People who may not have been able to join otherwise. Every cloud has a silver lining! I would like to share my deepest thanks to the Gala Committee, the Journal Committee and most specially to Debbie Gregor and Laurie Worthman for all the work they did towards the success of this event. In closing, I consider it a privilege to write this on behalf of the congregation. I am grateful that we can be together today to celebrate two pillars of our community and hope to be able to meet each other and hug in person soon. Dear Rabbi and Robin, L?Chaim! May you go from strength to strength! !???? ????

Over the past few weeks, I've spent a good bit of time transcribing the messages from Rabbi Gerry and Robin's admirers, family, friends, colleagues and members of FHJC into this journal. Each hour at this task I became more and more taken by the uniqueness of the messages and the personal feelings expressed. Many journals have countless ads congratulating the honorees on their "well-deserved honor," but not this one. Gerry and Robin do not elicit trite, standard comments; the sentiments described in this journal are sincere expressions born of meaningful relationships and genuine respect. As the Rabbi of Forest Hills Jewish Center, it is not surprising that its members would support this campaign and congratulate Rabbi Skolnik and Robin for their 40 years of dedication and devotion to the shul and its members, but I was amazed to read, over and over, how many members count Gerry and Robin as personal friends. I commented on this observation to Gerry and he answered in such a "Gerry" way. He said, (and I paraphrase) "I was just a kid when the balabatim of the shul took a chance on me. Robin and I were so young; a more experienced Rabbi should logically have replaced Rabbi Bokser (z'l) but FHJC saw something in me and they fought for us." I have heard Gerry tell this story before, always with humility and gratitude. Even after 40 years, he has not forgotten nor outgrown this feeling of gratitude to FHJC. He and Robin and their beautiful children grew up at FHJC and its members and their children became the Skolniks' dear friends and extended family. In fact, it is we who owe Robin and Gerry a debt of gratitude. For 40 years they have embraced the FHJC family as their own, building friendships and relationships, being there for our members throughout their lives' journeys ? naming babies, blesssing B'nai and B'not Mitzvah, standing under the chuppah with their children, hugging them when they buried their loved ones. Their impact on the lives of the members of FHJC manifests almost daily ? in the divrei Torah Gerry teaches, in the lessons of his sermons, and most significantly, in the example of Jewish family and Jewish life that he and Robin have demonstrated every day for 40 years. I remember that the first time we met he asked me to call him Gerry ? that's who is first. He does not stand on ceremony or demand kavod. Kavod comes to him as a result of his actions, not his title. As a colleague, he has always supported me. As a Rabbi and friend, he has counseled and consoled me. He is never judgmental and always compassionate. So I add my words to those of everyone who has supported this journal ? Forest Hills Jewish Center is truly blessed to have had Rabbi Gerry and Robin Skolnik lead us for 40 years. I congratulate them on this remarkable milestone and I pray that they continue doing exactly what they have been doing these past 40 years for many, many years to come. I thank you all for your heartfelt and generous support of our shul and this uniquely special Gala journal campaign in honor of our beloved Rabbi Gerry and Robin.

FROM THE D I RECTOR OF EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT & THE D I RECTOR OF EARLY CHI LDHOOD EDUCATION :

JessicaBraginsky&LynnFisher It is with great pleasure that we address you and recognize our honorees, Robin and Rabbi Gerald Skolnik, at this unique opportunity. This gala is more than a fundraiser, as important as that is. Tonight is also a time to celebrate and be grateful. We celebrate Forest Hills Jewish Center members and friends as we begin the process of re-emerging stronger, more united and more focused on what is meaningful for our members. To quote a revered sage, Rabbi Gerald Skolnik, as he cut to the chase at a recent School Board meeting - ?You can?t do Jewish without a community.? We celebrate the mitzvot and kindnesses large and small that members have done for other members. We celebrate the hard work of our team of FHJC professionals who have striven to guide us on a hitherto uncharted path towards stability, engagement and connection. We celebrate our lay leaders who have worked together to keep us together. And in these times, celebration does not arise without a corresponding deep feeling of gratitude. We are grateful that FHJC has become more than a place of employment for us; it has also become a place of friendship; camaraderie and close bonds. That is in no small part because of the leadership of Robin and Rabbi Gerry Skolnik. From the smile of welcome when entering the synagogue on Shabbat (remember that?); to the clear guidance on Zoom and all things screen shared; to the generous sharing of expertise that enhances our synagogue culture, Robin has brought her wit, her experience and her warmth to all that she does at FHJC.With each interaction, Robin makes us feel we have her undivided attention and that what we bring to her really matters. Working with Rabbi Skolnik is both a joy and a challenge. It is a joy to work with Rabbi Skolnik because he is both full of wisdom and experience and acknowledges that he is constantly learning and growing. It is a joy to work with Rabbi Skolnik because he can sit and play guitar with the Nursery students and discuss with a 13 year old why God lets good people suffer. It?s a joy to work with Rabbi Skolnik because he sees us both as colleagues and as people. It is a challenge, however, to rise to the bar that he has set by his devotion to FHJC. Forty in Judaism is an auspicious number. It isn?t until the age of 40 that we develop binah, insight. It takes 40 se? ah of water to fill a mikveh, the quintessential symbol of Jewish renewal. It took 40 years of wandering for the Israelites to finally to gain ?a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear? (Deut. 29:3-4). FHJC is privileged to have the gift of 40 years of Gerry and Robin?s leadership that has brought us insight into both Torah and menschlichkeit, the constantly renewed devotion and guidance to achieve our highest aspirations and the heart, eyes and ears to realize that this is something to celebrate. We wish them a mazal tov and a heartfelt thank you. With love and respect.

Tem m aKingsley, EllenJacobs, CandyKoerner, AlyssaPollack &PaulineRaphael How do we pay meaningful tribute to two people who have been our spiritual leaders, our role models, our advisers, our teachers, our book reviewers, our consolers, our friends, our helpers, our hosts, and our guests for 40 years? In a way, it?s better that we can?t have a dinner-dance because it gives us more time for more people to express their love and gratitude. But what about hugs and kisses? Al and I used to have a babysitter who asked for hugs and kisses written on paper from our children so she could put them in a drawer to pull out when she needed them. So put your hugs and kisses in the drawer until we?re all vaccinated and back together again and we?ll pull out all the hugs and kisses and shout THANK YOU to our cherished Robin and Rabbi Gerry! JOU RNA L C H A I RS:

I lanaAltm an, Carl Koerner, HowardPollack&MarkRaphael The membership of the Forest Hills Jewish Center has faced many serious challenges over the past year. We have all shared in the great pain and uncertainty that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused. Our synagogue life, whether within an actual brick and mortar building or on a computer screen, provides a refuge for all of us from the sometimes harsh realities that we confront. Our Rabbi and Robin make it possible for us to share spiritually, to worship virtually, and to remember that we all are one vital community. So, when we were presented with the opportunity to work on FHJC?s Annual Gala Journal Event honoring our Rabbi and Robin ? there was never a hesitation on our parts. It has been a sincere pleasure working ?virtually? with our committee and many of our friends at the shul to ensure the success of our Journal Campaign. We all strove hard to provide funds for our shul and its worthy endeavors. The accolades due our Rabbi for his 40 years of work as spiritual leader of our community and the Conservative Movement are boundless and Robin?s outstanding work on behalf of Jewish children is tremendous. But, to us, to the members of FHJC, they are ours. We have many different names for them; not all of our members joined 40 years ago! We know them as Rabbi or Gerry, Mrs. Skolnik, or just simply Robin. But, no matter how we know them or how long we know them for, one thing is immutable and unchangeable, they are there for us when we need

them. They allow us to worship our G-d in this virtual world, they provide guidance, solace and wisdom. They are OUR Rabbi and OUR Robin. Please know that we could not have achieved even a fraction of our success without the help of numerous key individuals who were always available with their advice and their dedicated work to ensure the success of this virtual journal. Therefore, we would like to capitalize on this opportunity to extend our appreciation to those folks who have contributed so much to this very important fundraising venture. To all our Center Arms Chairs, thank you for your dedicated and enthusiastic fundraising efforts.Thank you to our Executive Director Debbie Gregor for adapting to changing times, rolling with the punches and focusing on success. To Laurie Worthman ? THANK YOU ? for being there to answer ANY silly question and for always making us look good no matter what hour of the day it was. A hearty Yasher Koach to Evan Schapiro for being our magnificent producer. Todah Rabah to Karen Stein for her technical expertise. Our gratitude goes out to our fundraising chair ? Deborah Ball Witlin for your guidance. An extra special note of appreciation to Hazzan Henry Rosenblum, President Romi Narov, and the Officers and Board of the Forest Hills Jewish Center. As we mark the end of another successful campaign, we wish to note that this effort although trying at times, was truly a labor of love for all of us. We especially wish to commend the dedicated efforts of our wonderful Gala Committee ? Ellen Jacobs, Temma Kingsley, Candice Koerner, Alyssa Pollack and Pauline Raphael ? for making this event fun and joyous for all. Congratulations again to our wonderful honorees Rabbi Gerald and Robin Skolnik and thanks to all of you who took out ads, for you believe as we do, in the past, present, and especially the future of the Forest Hills Jewish Center.

For all of these things we are grateful? -For the courage and faith shown by the leadership and members of this synagogue to take a chance and hire a young rabbi forty years ago, and then nurture and support him and his wife as they and their family grew? -For the capacity of our Forest Hills Jewish Center and its members to allow us to be human and make mistakes along the way? -For the strength of Forest Hills Jewish Center members to allow themselves to be led, and to evolve as a community in new and sometimes unanticipated ways? -For allowing our rabbinic family to grow and flourish in ways that enriched our lives and the lives of our children? -For loving our children, and giving them the space to become the wonderful adults of whom we are so proud? - For the amazing, enduring friendships that have made our years here so special, and will no doubt sustain us well into the future? - For these and for so many other blessings that this community has brought to us, we are forever grateful. With love and gratitude,

Over the past 40 years, you have each put your hearts and souls into building this community and our family. Although never a resident of Forest Hills, the shul has been my house of worship for the past 25 years. Rabbi Skolnik together with Robin has helped to fill a spiritual void that I felt was missing. I have always admired the Rabbi?s insight and empathy, whether concerning the situation in Israel, the struggles we as Jews go through every day or on a personal level when dealing with losses of family members. The Forest Hills community is blessed to have had such a dedicated spiritual leader for the past 40 years. Congratulations Gerry and Robin.

Robin and Gerry. 40 years ago, just as you were arriving at FHJC so were we. We each began families, households, and careers. This anniversary deserves recognition and great celebration but the years it represents escape description. Among the many memories that come to mind; Thanks for the memory? of Passover second seders, of fish-free fishing trips, Super Bowl Sundays and outings with kids, weekends at the Laymen's Institute (we should have changed that name), b?nai mitzvot, weddings too, trips to Israel to name a few. Thanks for the memory... of being there for us, some good times; some bad, as together we watched our children grow, milestone by milestone, so that today we can share the privilege of each being known as our children's parents. But thanks for the biggest memory of all. You introduced our whole family to a Jewish world which has enriched our lives immeasurably. Looking forward to future memories together, mask-less with hugs and kisses.

Dear Gerry and Robin, I hope it is okay, and not blasphemous, to say that for so many of us, you two are a main attraction in a beloved community of believers and believers in believing. Thanks for believing in us, your congregation. How fortunate we have been to have a fluent-in-text traditionalist, who continues to grow, embracing change as our sense of justice has evolved in our lifetimes, to include women, LGBTQ folx, communal interfaith clergy partners, interfaith family partners, and most recently the project of anti-racism. A spontaneous compound sentence speaker extraordinaire whose sermons, sometimes broken up with tears, keep us on the edge even after 40 years. Whose abundant love for Israel engages us to lift our voices together in its beautiful songs. And a devoted and talented partner, a passionate protector of your family and advocate for parent0child relationships, a reader and mobilizer of book lovers, a generous professional and personal information specialist on education, entertaining and so many helpful subjects. Thanks for taking care of us, of yourselves and of each other over the years and especially during these challenging pandemic times. For accompanying us in times of celebration and heartbreak. Devoted friends. I join celebrating you with gratitude and love.

Robin and Gerry, As we mark this wonderful occasion of your forty years in the FHJC community, we are grateful for all you have done to enrich our family?s lives. SSSQ Softball games with Bailey and Katie, carpooling Talya and Steph to B?nei Mitzvahs, taking care packages up to Camp Ramah are the fun times we remember. Of course being there for all of us through illness, death and tragedy too, we know we can always count on both of you for your wisdom and support, and for that we thank you and love you always.

It is rare in the world today to find role models that embody the highest values of integrity and spirituality that stands the test of time. It is even rarer to find a couple that does so. We are blessed to have found both of you. Like a modern-day Abraham & Sarah, you opened your home to us at the very beginning of our journey. Then we traveled to Israel together, attended your amazing Seders, and of course have been playing music together year after year. You've been there for both the glad and the sad ? for our most precious moments, including our wedding, Lily's Bat Mitzvah, and Elana's naming as well as the death of Eric's dad. May you both go from strength to strength and have much joy and good health going forward. With love, Sara, Eric, Lily and Elana
