GUEST OF HONOR:

Norman Gursen ?Hello, this is Norman Gursen from the Forest Hills Jewish Center!?How many times over the years have we heard that familiar and friendly voice on the phone? Norman Gursen is easily one of the most beloved members of the Forest Hills Jewish Center, greeting guests on Shabbat mornings in the sanctuary, guiding new members and congregants through prayers, rituals, and aliyot, and making everyone he meets feel welcome and comforted. With a handful of delicious candy or a kind word or encouraging smile he, is truly the heart and soul of the Forest Hills Jewish Center. Although a long-time resident of Forest Hills, Norman grew up in Brooklyn and was a student at the Crown Heights Yeshiva. He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School and received his B.S. from New York University. After his college days he served in the U.S. Army and then entered his family?s business. He is currently a consultant for a prominent footwear company. Norman?s parents, Eli and Lillian Gursen, were energetic members of the Forest Hills Jewish Center for more than 55 years. Norman has followed in their footsteps, having been an active member of our shul for all his adult life. He has served on the Board of Trustees, chaired innumerable synagogue committees, and was Vice-President of Fundraising and Administration. Currently he is co-chair of the Ritual Committee, a position he has held for many years. For all his dedicated and diligent efforts on behalf of our shul, Norman was named a Lifetime Member of the FHJC Board of Trustees. Norman is also an accomplished pianist and has entertained our members and guests at numerous events and commemorations. He is also an enthusiastic supporter of many philanthropic causes including: Israel Bonds, the UJA Federation of NY, the Solomon Schechter School of Queens, and the Jewish Theological Seminary. Norman is the proud father of two daughters, Sharon (married to David) and Michal; he is also the loving grandfather of Gabriel.

KOCHAV ME'I R RECI PI ENT:

Anita Miller Anita has been a member of the Forest Hills Jewish Center for more than twenty-five years. She and her husband, Maurice z?l, moved to the neighborhood from Lawrence, New York. Establishing a new home in Forest Hills meant being part of a synagogue. For Anita, ?the Forest Hills Jewish Center reached her heart.? She strongly believes that it is necessary to support the shul and has demonstrated her commitment over the years through her generosity and participation in events, as well as serving on the board of FHJC Sisterhood. As a graduate of Brooklyn College, majoring in sociology and neuropsychology, Anita focused on using behavior modification to help others. While raising her children, Larry and Wendy, she and a colleague formed a professional practice which sought to assist people in making changes to their lives. This extremely progressive method involved one-on-one and group sessions. In Anita?s words, she found something that people liked and considered herself successful if people found happiness with their lives. Anita is an aficionado of classical music. She plays the piano, and she sang in a chorus for many years. She enjoys symphonic music and opera, particularly from pre-nineteenth-century composers. In addition to her children, Anita is blessed with four grandchildren, Matthew (and Yia), Gillian, Naomi, and Olivia who is soon to be married. The synagogue has been a blessing to Anita and she appreciates the opportunity to participate in services and programs via Zoom.We in turn, are privileged that she is part of our community and wish her Mazel Tov on being honored this evening.

Rabbi Gerald Skolnik As has been my pleasure and privilege for more than four decades, I am delighted to share in this celebratory evening as we once again mark the successful conclusion of our annual Journal campaign. Clearly, the exigencies of the moment, particularly our ongoing efforts to safely navigate the myriad challenges of COVID, constrain us in our celebration. But with deep gratitude to the chairs of the Journal campaign, as well as those who have designed and implemented the program of this evening, lay and professional, we are, despite the constraints, able to be together, to enjoy each other?s company, and be reminded of the centrality and ultimate importance of this synagogue that is an anchor in all of our lives. In honoring Norman Gursen, our Forest Hills Jewish Center has wisely recognized what so many of us have known for so long? that in so many ways, and for so many reasons, Norman represents the very best of us? the person whose qualities of character and friendship we most admire, and the synagogue member whose warm and ever-welcoming greeting we have all come to associate with feeling at home and safe here. As we all know, Norman identifies himself as ?Norman Gursen of the Forest Hills Jewish Center,? because that affiliation is a source of pride and fulfillment for him and we are all the better for it. Few and far between are Center members who have not, over the years, been the beneficiaries of random acts of kindness by Norman. Truth to tell, we all have, myself and my family very much included. To know Norman is to love him. We all do, and that is why he is being recognized in this very special way this evening. Norman, congratulations; no one deserves this honor more. I?m also so happy to be able to offer congratulations to Center member Anita Miller, who has, through the years, been a steady and faithful friend to so many of us. Along with her late husband Murray, z?l, Anita has long been a generous supporter of the Forest Hills Jewish Center. For that alone she deserves our gratitude. But beyond that, even as life has presented her with myriad challenges, Anita has worn them all with grace and dignity, and has been? and continues to be? an unfailingly warm and gracious person who understands the critical role that a synagogue plays in the life of a Jew. She is such a wonderful woman, and so richly deserving of this recognition. Mazal tov, Anita! Thank you all for your generous support of our synagogue; may we all go from strength to strength, in good health.

Hazzan Randall Levin Dear Norman and Anita, Mazal Tov to you both on being honored at our annual event.

Congratulations, Anita, on being honored as our ?Kochav Me?ir? ? you are a shining star! Your faithful support of our synagogue is an inspiration, and greatly appreciated.

Mazal Tov, Norman, on receiving this well-deserved kavod as our Guest of Honor for this year?s "Night Under the Stars!? You have been a welcoming presence to me and to my family, and to so many others at the Forest Hills Jewish Center. I can understand why you are such a beloved member of the community. From your help at weekday and shiva minyanim, to your friendly phone calls, to giving out candy to the kids, your "service with a smile,? is an invaluable piece of the fabric of our community.

I am excited to be sharing in the celebration with you. Wishing you both the best!

FROM THE PRESI DENT:

Romi Narov ??? ????? ??? ? ? ?? Tonight is not like any night at The Forest Hills Jewish Center! We are celebrating two people whose contribution to the life of our community is immeasurable. The last time we met in person to celebrate our most significant social gathering of the year was in March of 2020. At that Dinner Dance there was already a feeling that something is going to change in our lives. And boy, did our lives change! As we navigate the ups and down of life with a pandemic, we are very grateful to be able to celebrate tonight in person. Even if it is in a modified form. Our Honoree tonight is Norman Gursen, Mr. Forest Hills Jewish Center. Who has not received a phone call from Norman: Hi, this is Norman Gursen from the Forest Hills Jewish Center? He calls to say Shabbat Shalom, Mazal Tov, wish for a long life or just to say hi. BZE (Before the Zoom Era) when we did not know what a virtual minyan was, Norman was the wind beneath the wings of the morning Minyan. He made it his business to know when each of us is celebrating a simcha or observing a yahtzeit. His constant presence at Shabbat service, with candy in his pockets, was something we all relied on. How appropriate that we honor him as we are slowly trying to get back some in-person presence at the Forest Hills Jewish Center. We also have a special award tonight for Anita Miller, a shining star, ???? ? ???, here at FHJC. The thriving existence of any community depends on the generosity of its members. Anita and her husband Murray z?l, have been, and she continues to be, staunch supporters of the Forest Hills Jewish Center. We cannot thank you enough for your support. We are happy to have you as our honoree tonight and wish you a good, long life! As we all know, anything that happens at FHJC, happens because of the hard work and dedication of Debbie Gregor and Laurie Worthman. Thank you Debbie and Laurie! Our thanks also to the event Chairs: Pauline Raphael, Deborah Ball Witlin, Temma Kingsley and Alyssa Pollack and to the fund raising chair Howard Pollack. And now, let?s party!!!

FROM THE EXECUTI VE DI RECTOR:

Deborah Gregor More than two years ago we celebrated together at the last in-person FHJC Gala and we have so much celebrating to catch up on now. Not only are we actually wearing fancy clothes, having a party and enjoying each other?s company, we are celebrating our most iconic member and dear friend, Norman Gursen, and Anita Miller, a lady worthy of all the kavod we can bestow. Norman came to my office to introduce himself to me during my first week at FHJC, and ever since he has made it his practice to call me, as he calls so many others, just to check in and say hi. He always has something sweet to say, something that makes me feel good. I know that many of you have this same experience because the ads you?ve placed all express your gratitude for the good and true friend Norman is to all of you ? always there for you, always with a smile. Norman has been a devoted member of FHJC for over 50 years. He is always in shul on Shabbat, welcoming everyone, dispensing candies and greetings. Telephone calls from ?Norman Gursen from the Forest Hills Jewish Center? are ubiquitous as he checks up on everyone and remembers special occasions. There are certainly many people who have been devoted to our shul, but none approach Norman in the daily commitment and caring he demonstrates. It pleases me greatly to also be recognizing Anita Miller with our Kochav Me?ir, Shining Star Award. Anita and Murray z"l joined FHJC 25 years ago and year after year they participated in every program and event offered, and generously supported every campaign and fundraiser. Always gracious and warm, perfectly dressed and coiffed, I have never seen Anita without a smile and an optimistic attitude. Quietly and modestly, Anita is always there for our shul. She is truly a shining star and I am so glad we are able to show her our respect and gratitude tonight. I hope this celebration of Norman and Anita paves the way for many more opportunities to gather together at Forest Hills Jewish Center. Thank you all for your support and for joining us.

F R OM T H E J OU R NA L & EV E N T CH A I R S:

Deborah Ball Witlin, Temma Kingsley, Alyssa & Howard Pollack & Pauline Raphael As Chairs of this year?s event, we speak for everyone in expressing gratitude to Norman Gursen for being a constant presence in our lives. It is the honor of the Forest Hills Jewish Center to thank Norman for his devotion to FHJC community. He is a dedicated friend to us all. Norman possesses the unique ability to make everyone feel like they belong at FHJC; whether one is a life-long member or someone who is in the sanctuary for the first time.If there is one word that comes to mind when thinking about Norman, it is ?mensch?. Not only because he is perceived as one, but because he understands the importance of menschlichkeit. Whether he is acknowledging a yahrzeit, handing out candy at shul or telling a joke, Norman earnestly cares about us all. We can?t wait to celebrate with Norman, who truly holds the title of ?Mr. Forest Hills Jewish Center?! Anita Miller is this year?s recipient of the ?Kochav Me?ir? award, given in recognition of service to our synagogue.Mazel Tov and thank you for your continued support. We are grateful for the dedication of many individuals and arms of our community. The success of this event depended upon all of those who worked together on our Journal Campaign. Deborah Gregor and Laurie Worthman were instrumental in every way and this event could not have happened without their guidance. As we know, fundraising is an essential component of this event as it ensures the health of FHJC As such, Night Under the Stars is the most significant event of the year. We appreciate the support of Rabbi Gerald Skolnik, Hazzan Randall Levin, President Romi Narov, and the Officers and Board of the Forest Hills Jewish Center. As we reinvigorate ourselves after more than two years, it is our hope that our Night Under the Stars is only the beginning of many more happy events. Planning this evening of joy has been our privilege and pleasure. We spent many hours exchanging ideas and brainstorming. We enjoyed working with everyone and wish you all a wonderful evening.
