The Top 5 Reasons You Shouldn’t
I
t’s a Saturday night and you’re trying
to find a new place for dinner. Yelp pops up and your instantly sucked into a vortex of bad reviews and negativity... Yelp is essentially where negative comments go to die. Don’t use it. Here’s why:
5
Restaurants with big budgets can purchase “advertising” with Yelp, allowing them to make negative comments disappear, burying them in cyberspace where less eyes can see them. Sound fair?
Restaurant reviews Interested in learning about the best places to eat? Try looking up the food bloggers in the area. IntoxiKate, FoodiePleasure, and DeeCuisine all offer information and reviews from savvy foodies in and around Westchester! Most bloggers will also respond to inquiries via Twitter. 8 | IntoxiKate Fall Guide
4
While the Internet can update faster than most print publications, they do not update quickly enough to match the constantly changing restaurant industry. Thus, inaccuracies occur.
Use Yelp
3
{Seriously, stop it right now!}
Who ARE these people?!? Sure, Mary S. from Bedford may be a neighbor you can relate to and may even offer some sound advice. But who can say these people are even who they say they are?
2
Think of a time you had a bad service experience. How many people did you tell? Now think of a great experience—did you share that as much? We’re prone to be more vocal when we’re unhappy, skewing reviews to the negative.
1
“With great power, comes great responsibility.” Bad Yelp reviews can contribute to putting a restaurant out of business. Nothing good can come out of negativelycharged emotional responses.
Better ways to share • Join the IntoxiKate Foodie Nation on Facebook—the group page allows you to share photos and reviews on • your latest dining experiences. • Face it—we’re much more motivated to complain. Remember to share your POSITIVE experiences to
balance the yin to that yang and recommend a restaurant you loved to friends. Try to be fair. Is it your first time visiting the restaurant? Did the eatery just open? Try not to judge a restaurant on one visit and give that eatery a second try. IntoxiKate Fall Guide | 9
forkthis Fake T hat Recipe:
Cafe of Love’s Truffled Chickpeas The truffled chickpeas at Mount Kisco’s Cafe of Love are a real treat, but I can’t always get there when my craving hits. While I definitely miss that baked in love from Leslie Lampert (okay, hers are definitely better!), when I’m at home I pop these babies in the oven with my easy, fake-it-and-make-it recipe.
❏ 12-oz can of chickpeas, drained ❏ 2 tbsp of olive oil ❏ 1 tsp of truffle oil ❏ salt ❏ garlic salt ❏ Parmesan cheese 10 | IntoxiKate Fall Guide
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Allow your chickpeas to dry completely, then toss them with olive oil, truffle oil, salt and garlic salt. Spread them out evenly on a baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven, and sprinkle with some freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

hen you think of casinos, the last thing on your mind is probably juicy, rotisserie chicken and a generous helping of baby back ribs. You may not expect that from your favorite pub IntoxiKate Fall Guide | 25
Take it from this Irish lass—Dan Rooney’s does it right, offering a corned beef and cabbage ($19) that rallies even MY recipe. Top it off with the decadent brownie sundae, offering Guinness ice cream and topped with whipped cream and walnuts ($9).
either. But Dan Rooney’s Sports Pub at Empire City Casino at the Yonker’s Raceway breaks the mold on both—allowing you to score big on more than just the slots. While Rooney’s definitely caters to the sports crowd—check out their 3-2-1 special created especially for pro football fans to the right— there’s a pretty comprehensive menu priced right that blows away expectations. sports pub Dan Rooney’s isn’t coined a sports pub for no reason—pairing plenty of TVs with food and beer deals, it’s a great place to catch a football game. This fall, the bar is offering a 3-2-1 Football Menu available during any professional game:

through, the pub caters to both, allowing you to catch a game on one of their oversized screens or order dinner on the go. Looking for lighter fare between playing the slots? Try the BBQ pulled pork sliders ($10) or {if you’re watching that waistline) a little hummus and pita bread ($6). For dinner with the family (or maybe a date?!?), try the fish and chips, served with malt vinegar and tartar sauce ($15) or the rotisserie chicken for two paired with mashed potatoes and gravy ($24). It doesn’t have to be March to enjoy a full plate of corned beef and cabbage. This pub’s got it right, and serves up a dish that rivals IntoxiKate’s version, which isn’t easy to do. If you’re going the Irish route, continue the theme in your final course. The dessert menu includes a brownie sundae with Guinness ice cream ($9) {ah-mazing!}. If you prefer to go the nonalcoholic route, there’s chocolate and peanut butter cake, berry crumble and homemade apple pie ($8 for each). IntoxiKate Fall Guide | 29

Moderne Barn's Rooftop Garden It doesn’t get any more farm to table than this! On a recent trip to Armonk’s Moderne Barn, I got a glimpse of Chef Ethan Kostbar’s pride and joy—a rooftop garden including greens, squash, beans, beets and more! Just a few flights away from his kitchen, Chef Kostbar incorporated his own produce into both late summer and early fall specials.
