95% of resumes fail for one reason!

Why? They fail to answer the employer’s key concerns and questions. Companies hire employees for 3 reasons: 1. To solve a problem 2. To capitalize on an opportunity 3. A combination of both

“It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts... it is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and always to think for themselves.” —Robert Hutchins

Dr. Melissa Wanzer made a strong impression on my life several years ago, as I sat front and center in her classroom, captivated by her lecture at Canisius College. In the card I sent her this past holiday, I wrote, “If I can make a difference in one student’s life the way you’ve made in mine, I would consider myself a success.” I believe I can make that difference. My broad professional career provides me the ability to share key elements of the publishing and design industries students may not learn in other classrooms. My experience at Woman’s World Magazine allows me to share examples of interpersonal communication that occurs between departments. My freelance experiences enable me to teach students how to work with clients in different capacities. The products I have constructed—ranging from editorial print media to website to product design—prove I can show students how they can create their own portfolio, taking their projects from idea to creation. A successful professor also needs to provide a positive learning environment, sets high standards for students in and out of the classroom, and is devoted to students and the teaching profession. In order to become a successful professor, I will incorporate all of these elements into my classroom. Students do not share all the same capabilities, and therefore do not learn the same way. To provide a positive learning environment, my lectures include slide show presentations, real examples, other visual materials, and practicing professionals as guest lecturers. While covering the fundamentals in lecture format is important, I also want to challenge students to think critically and encourage leadership skills by providing “real world” scenarios. I used this very approach, with success, for the past two years while lecturing at the College Media Advisers Convention in New York City. A great example of a “real world” scenario is a capstone project. Given the opportunity, I would like to design a course where students interested in the print industry could work together to create their own magazine. This would also establish links with other programs on campus, and include students studying art, photography, and writing. The course would move from conceptualizing an idea to a strong portfolio piece. Fostering a positive learning environment promoting growth, diversity, and trust is important in the classroom, and the standards a professor sets outside the lecture hall are just as significant. Mentoring students involved in student-run organizations is something I am excited to practice. Access to these extracurricular activities is just another way to offer students opportunities to apply their education in a professional environment and encourage critical thinking. Advising outside the classroom demonstrates devotion to students’ education as well. It is also important to continue to stay current with the culture of the journalism field, so I constantly research the status of the industry and its technologies. And while I will be clear on how the students will be evaluated, I will also distribute a self-designed evaluation for myself to ensure that I am accomplishing these goals. I am excited for the opportunity and look forward to hearing from you!
