2021 SPRING GAL A HONOREES
CINDY & BEN GOLUB Cindy and Ben joined WJC when they moved to Mamaroneck 30 years ago and the community felt their presence immediately. Every Rosh Hashanah, we listen for the sound from Ben’s shofar to mark the New Year, as he serves as a Baal Tekiah. For many years, Ben served as a WJC Trustee and Cindy served on many fundraising and dinner dance committees. At the same time, Cindy has prepared meals for countless congregants in need of support because they are homebound, ill, or just had a baby. The Golubs are quiet mensches, giving of themselves - their time, ideas, hands-on involvement, and support. Beyond WJC, Cindy and Ben are leaders in the Jewish community, passionate about Jewish education, and believers in service. They have longstanding and meaningful roles at UJA-Federation of NY and The Leffell School, among many others. Cindy is currently Westchester Regional Chair of UJAFederation of NY, representing the Westchester community on the Executive Committee, and a past chair of UJA-Women. Ben has served as chair of the UJA-Federation campaign at BlackRock since its inception, a trustee of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York, and a trustee of The Leffell School. Cindy and Ben are the proud parents of Alex, Phillip, Jill, daughter-in-law Mojgan, and future sonin-law Zach. If you ask the Golub children to describe their home, they will undoubtedly say warm, welcoming, and filled with Jewish values and traditions. In addition to being proud parents, Cindy and Ben are, and have always been, devoted children. Ben helped co-author Kaddishel- his father’s biographical account of his experiences growing up in Poland, escaping the Nazis, and his journey to America. Ben is currently the Chief Risk Officer of BlackRock, Inc. and one of the eight original founding partners. When Ben is not working, volunteering, or spending time with family, he can be found captaining his boat around the Long Island Sound, playing tennis, or practicing his flute. Cindy is a founding principal of G-Squared Advisory LLC- a fee only financial planning firm that helps people establish future financial security and differentiates itself with its practice area that caters to widowed and divorced women. When she is not working, volunteering, or baking, Cindy loves to travel or walk in the neighborhood with friends.
2021 WJC SPRING GAL A TRIBUTEES
THE COVID TASK FORCE
BUNNY (BLANCHE) BENENSON Bunny (Blanche) Benenson, MD is a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx. Bunny is director of resident training and associate fellowship director in Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics , as well as chair of the quality improvement committee for the Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center. Bunny and husband Andy Roth joined WJC when their daughter Samara was in nursery school in 1993, followed soon after by their son Bram.
HOWARD LEAF Howard Leaf, MD is an infectious diseases physician and hospital epidemiologist. Howard and his wonderful wife, Dr. Andrea Leaf, have been WJC congregants since moving to Larchmont in 1997, and look forward to many (pandemic-free!) years with all of you at WJC. Howard and Andrea have two children, Alexander and Rebecca.
CHARLOTTE MALASKY
VICTOR BADNER Victor Badner DMD, MPH is Chairman of the Dept. of Dentistry at Jacobi Medical Center and Associate Professor of Population Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. He is past President of the Medical Executive Committee at the Hospital and part of Jacobi’s decision making team regarding Covid-19 infection prevention for staff and patients. He has published papers on healthcare during the pandemic as well as designed infection prevention protocols for the NYC municipal hospital system (HHC). Victor and Frieda have been active members at WJC since 1988, were married here in 1989, had their children Rebecca, Emma, and Gabriel named and Bar/Bat Mitzvahed here and were honored as Gala Honorees in 2011. He is truly proud to have been part of the task force and thanks the synagogue for recognizing its efforts with this honor.
Charlotte Malasky, MD is a pulmonologist who has worked for many years in the Montefiore system in the Bronx. Now semi-retired, she works 1 day per week in the Jacobi Hospital Pulmonary Clinic as well as the occasional locum tenens in far off places such as Billings, Mt. She has been a member at WJC since 1993, driving up from the Bronx since a move from New Rochelle in 2014. Her husband, Dr Paul Mayo, has been very patient with all of the task force ZOOM meetings, unlike the cat, who inevitably makes his presence felt on screen. Charlotte and Paul have 3 sons and 2 granddaughters.
HEATHER TAFFET GOLD Heather Taffet Gold, PhD is professor of population health at NYU School of Medicine and past president of the Society for Medical Decision Making. She’s trained in health services research and policy, and her work rigorously evaluates the trade-offs in healthcare, including costs and benefits of various health interventions in real-world settings. Heather has been a member of WJC since 2006, serves as co-chair of the Inclusion Task Force, and is married to Jeff Taffet. They have two teenage boys, Benjamin and Micah.
MESSAGE FROM RABBI ARNOWITZ
MESSAGE FROM THE WJC PRESIDENT
Dear WJC Family,
Welcome to our 2021 Gala.
One of my great blessings as the new rabbi of WJC is to be able to get to know, learn from and spend time with Cindy and Ben. From the moment Tami and I arrived in Mamaroneck they opened their house to us and the WJC community multiple times, first for a Meet & Greet and then for the Scholar in Residence Weekend. We’ve seen Ben’s commitment to the mitzvah of blowing the shofar and heard his masterful shofar blowing indoors and outside by the Sound in a year that called for unusual efforts. Cindy’s leadership in the synagogue and throughout the greater Jewish community is also inspiring. We have been endlessly impressed by their mastery of business balanced with devotion to their beautiful family, by their incredible accomplishments balanced by their down-to-earth demeanor and mostly just by what menschlich people they are. On every occasion and in every way Ben and Cindy have taught and led by example, being the incarnation of commitment and wisdom in their support of WJC, the Westchester Jewish Community and Jewish people all over the world. Speaking of commitment, it is also our honor to recognize the members of the Covid-19 Task Force. This has been a challenging year for the shul community and all of its members to navigate. Our shul leadership could not possibly have served the community even half as well without the guidance, patience and, most importantly, wisdom of this exceptional group of healthcare professionals. They are successful and busy in their own work and yet they made time to use their incredible gifts to serve their WJC family. During various periods of the pandemic our Covid-19 Task Force met nearly weekly, and often within a few hours notice when an urgent health matter arose. The conversations were often challenging and the situation was nearly always stressful. The pandemic has been longer than any of us imagined when we initially asked for their help in March 2020. And yet these spectacular volunteers did not flinch from the added responsibility. I am so grateful to each of you for your exceptional efforts on behalf of our synagogue – any successes we have had at mitigating the health threats of this difficult year and providing meaningful and inspiring spiritual opportunities would have been impossible without your guidance. Pirkei Avot, The Ethics of Our Fathers, was clearly prescient when it said, “Who is honorable? The one who honors their fellows.” How blessed are we to belong to a shul community with the likes of the Golub’s and the Covid-19 Task Force to honor on an evening like this. Thank you for your leadership and support. In gratitude,
RJA
I’d like to begin by thanking our terrific Gala co-chairs, Laurie Girsky and Tara Goldstein, all of the members of our Gala committee and the WJC staff for organizing this afternoon’s event and to Evan Schapiro and Randy Heller for producing a wonderful virtual event. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. When I asked Cindy and Ben Golub to be this year’s WJC Gala honorees, I knew it was a long shot. Cindy and Ben – deservedly – have received many honors from the likes of UJAFederation and The Lefell School among many others. They scarcely needed another honor. But, I explained, this is a family affair – an opportunity to celebrate the Golub family, including their beautiful children Alex, Phillip and Jill, as members of our WJC mishpacha – our WJC family. More than we honor them, they honor us by calling WJC their home. Cindy and Ben have been members and generous financial and spiritual supporters of WJC for thirty years. Ben served as a WJC trustee for many years, and Cindy not only served on numerous dinner dance and fundraising committees, but has extended her hand in countless acts of hesed – loving kindness – providing meals and support for those in need in our community. We have had the privilege of hearing Ben blow the shofar in the WJC study service for more than a decade and last year at the Harbor. I want to thank Cindy and Ben for everything they do and continue to do for our community. May we move forward from strength to strength with you and your family for many years to come. And now for our Tributees, the WJC Covid-19 Task Force. You can’t imagine how many hours they spent since last March in countless meetings struggling with the many difficult health and safety decisions our synagogue has faced. They always acted not only with wise judgment, great seriousness and sensitivity to the issues at hand, but also with positive attitudes and terrific senses of humor, even when – or perhaps especially when – things looked bleak. Howard, Charlotte, Victor, Bunny and Heather, there is no way we could have functioned the way we did over the past year without your efforts. We owe you a huge debt of gratitude for all you have done and continue to do to help keep us safe. Thank you. Friends, 2020 was such a unique year. Although physically distant, we managed to go beyond our walls to connect, to heal, to learn, to celebrate and to pray. Thank you to all of you for your continued dedication to WJC during a year unlike any other. SETH SCHAFLER
MESSAGE FROM THE GALA CHAIRS It is hard to believe that this is the second Virtual WJC Gala. As the weather warms, flowers blossom, vaccine availability increases, we make progress against Covid-19, and the world continues to open up, we feel a deep sense of gratitude. With a full heart, we welcome Shavout and the first fruits, and we are so very excited to honor Cindy and Ben Golub and pay tribute to the WJC Covid Task Force. Honoring Cindy and Ben is a personal joy for us. Their contributions are extraordinary. They are generous and humble. They have been our dear friends for decades, and we know our bonds of friendship will only strengthen as times passes. We love spending time with them and their wonderful family. We appreciate them for their passion to mitzvot, Jewish causes, and especially WJC. Paying tribute to the Covid Task Force is a privilege. Victor Badner, Bunny Benenson, Howard Leaf, Charlotte Makovsky, and Heather Taffet Gold brought their professional expertise, dedication and commitment, and worked overtime to keep our synagogue safe. They helped set protocols that allowed our community the freedom to focus its energy elsewhere. We appreciate the importance of the role they play, both directly and indirectly, in all our lives. Thank you to the WJC team that worked to make this 2021 Gala a success. Thank you to the staff: David Goldstein, Rosie Aronin, Millie Briceno, Kim Lewis, Ally Paisley and Jose Luis Fonseca who worked tirelessly to keep WJC going strong as the center of our lives. Thank you to our top-notch Gala Committee who showed up with smiles on Zoom, helped plan all aspects of this Gala, and devoted energy to reaching out to the WJC community, one-by-one. Special shout outs to: the incredibly talented Randy Heller, the honoree introducer Barbara Novick, the super-organized Sherry Thaler for keeping us on track, the journal team - Sherry and Marissa de Sa, the community outreach organizer Sarene Shanus, and the treat coordinator Jennifer Winters. A huge thank you to Evan Schapiro and Katie Schlientz for their professionalism and creativity. Without Evan, there would be no run of show. Tonight we celebrate each of you, who have helped build and sustain our incredible WJC family. Thank you for celebrating with us! Warmly,
LAURIE GIRSKY AND TARA SLONE-GOLDSTEIN
2021 Spring Gala Co-Chairs
From a Brit Milah and two Baby Namings, to a Bar Mitzvah and two Bat Mitzvahs, to a Wedding, two Shivahs, years of Shabbat and Jewish holiday services, and for all the dear friends we have made, WJC has truly been the Center of our Jewish lives. Thank you for honoring us tonight while also paying a well-deserved tribute to the WJC Covid Task Force. The last fifteen months of our enforced separation has reminded us that “absence does make the heart grow fonder.” We very much miss so many of our formal and informal connections with the WJC community and hope and pray that our full communal lives can soon be restored.

May 23, 2021 Dear Friends, Congratulations and best wishes to the Westchester Jewish Center (WJC) on its Annual Spring Benefit. We are all gathered virtually tonight to support and celebrate the great work and mission of WJC. I join you in paying tribute to your distinguished honorees, Cindy and Ben Golub for their exemplary leadership and passionate involvement in the WJC community. Ben served for many years as a WJC Trustee and Cindy served on several fundraising committees and prepared meals for homebound congregants. In the broader Jewish community, Ben and Cindy currently hold senior positions at UJA-Federation of NY and The Leffell School. Cindy serves on the Executive Committee of UJA-Federation of NY as the Westchester Regional Chair and Ben has served as chair of the UJA-Federation campaign at BlackRock. Ben is a trustee of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York and a trustee of The Leffell School. My best wishes to all those virtually present on this special occasion. Every year, and particularly this past year, the Spring Gala is an opportunity to offer gratitude and recognition to those who enrich the worship, learning and outreach experience at WJC. Warm regards,
Steven Otis State Assemblyman
