Northern soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England in the late 1960s from the British mod scene, based on a particular style of black American soul music, especially from the mid-1960s, with a heavy beat and fast tempo.

Northern

At its peak Northern Soul meant dancing, spinning, jumping and kicking all night at clubs such as The Twisted Wheel in Manchester or Wigan Casino in Wigan. It’s fashion featured the widest Oxford style trousers, sports vests and long twirly skirts with jackets and bags showcasing the sew on patch of whatever Northern Soul club a dedicated fan was a member of.

2 Today the Northern Soul scene still exists making its presence known through both high street and high end fashion. From the extremes of inspiring the theme of the Gucci Pre-Fall 2017 campaign video to influencing the looks on the Topman Design SS16 runway, to the subtleties of women’s wide leg trousers and denim jackets featuring sew on patches. The subculture has even inspired film directors such as Elaine Constantine to create her movie titled Northern Soul.

Con cep t

To show the connection between family and Northern Soul through visiting my family’s favourite places in Sheffield to celebrate Sheffield street style whilst including Northern Soul references. 4

“For me it was like I fit in, I’ve got a family. Every single person I ever met on the scene felt like they were my brother or my sister.” - Fran Franklin, Northern Soul fan.

Everyone who was a part of the Northern Soul scene felt like it was a family to them. For me Sheffield has meant family as my brother lives in Sheffield, therefore this led to inspiring the concept of this photoshoot to show the connection between Northern Soul and family.

Rationale

Frog & Parrot

For the photoshoot locations we shot at independent vintage clothing shops, a record store and a cafe as they are some of my family’s favourite places to visit in Sheffield. We also included my brother and I’s favourite street art locations in Sheffield created by Sheffield based street artists. These locations were great to tie in the celebration of Sheffield street style. We also visited a pub whose decor is heavily influenced by Northern Soul music and so this location plus the record shop made for perfect Northern Soul references.

Photography & Models

For photography inspiration I drew from fashion photographer Barbara Anastacio and her photoshoot with RJ King. The shoot has a large focus on bright colours and so I wanted to recreate this element in this photoshoot, mainly picking up on the vividness of the red jacket. Barbara Anastacio also played with angles in her photoshoot with some shots at low angles, off centre shots and candids and so I wanted to include this in this photoshoot to create a casual and fun feel to the photos to fit with the concept of showcasing the sense of family. I also wanted to include more pose based shots to show off the styling of the outfits and to also make the shoot feel like a fashion photoshoot. Also to coincide with the theme of family, the models chosen for the photoshoot were my brother and I. For posing I took inspiration from fashion photographer Malina Rose and recreated poses used in one of her photoshoots such as the shot focusing on the sunglasses and the records covering half of our faces, as the original featured leaves.

MUAH

For Make-up and hair I decided on a natural and casual look with slightly curled hair and minimal, neutral make-up for my own look and unstyled hair for my brother. This is because I wanted a relaxed feel to the photoshoot and so created the looks to coincide with this and so as to keep the focus on the styling of the outfits.

13

For styling I wanted to include traditional Northern Soul style, but with a modern take on the classic elements of a Northern Soul outfit. For example my brother’s accessories include pins on his jacket, referencing the club membership patches that Northern Soul fans would sew onto their jackets and bags. I’m wearing wide leg corduroy trousers to link to the wide leg Oxford trousers that were a staple for Northern Soul dancers.

The final image includes elements of both Northern Soul and family. To convey the concept in a single image, 3 photos have been overlayed on top of each other so that details of all 3 images show through.

Short

To go with the photoshoot I also created a minute long short film featuring shots around the independent vintage clothing stores, record store, pub and street art in Sheffield. Clips included my brother and I candidly looking through clothes and records and panning shots to showcase the styling of the outfits.
