Katie Winter 503 Project report

INTRODUCTION

Within 503 I have produced a total of 7 individual briefs, all of which have come to compleatly different conclutions. I have really enjoyed working independently on these briefs, and have tried to work to a style which compliments my own stlye and way of working. The briefs which i have decided to do have all been very different in terms of length, size and scale.

Contents 1-2 Intro and Contents 3-4 Uk Greetings 5-6 Ella’s Kitchen 7-8 Hellfire 9-10 Feel Good Brief 1 11-12 Ainsley 13-14 Doewe Egberts 15-16 Feel Good Brief 2 17-18 Evaluation 19-20 5 things I have learnt

UK GREETINGS Brief 1 YCN Uk greetings was the ďŹ rst brief I chose to look at, origionally I was attracted to the fact that I could include my own illustartion style within it. There were a few manatory requirements but other than them the brief was pretty open to interpretation. As well as producing the card designs, the enveoples and logo i have also created a range for each design, so i have created notebooks, sationary, water asks wrapping paper and much more.

I have included some of the illustartions which I produced for this project on the left. Overall I have really enjoyed doing this project, the illustartions which I produced worked really well in pattern form so I decided to expand the project by created extra products, this really helped me to think about related products and where they would be placed in order to be sold.

Ella’s Kitchen Brief 2 Collaborative YCN Ella’s Kitchen was the brief which me and my partner Niki Proctor chose to do as our colaborative brief. As me and Nikki had very similar tatses in terms of designing we thought this brief would be a great one to do in order to incorporate illustration as well as try something which both ofus had never really done before.

W tried to include an element of 3d design into it by created a standing tree which could be used when pitching to the brands clients, we used the lazor cutter in order to produe this, which was really fun and as i had never used it before I learnt some new skills, as a pair i think me a Nikki worked well together and produced an outcome which i am overall proud of.

Hellfire Brief 3 Leeds Brewary After a visit from leeds brewary we were given this brief, to create a new label for a beer called Hellfire. the beer was going to be used at a specifiac event in connection with creative networks.

HELLFIRE This brief was quite short and could be produced Quickly. After looking at the origional logo I decided I wanted it to be illustrative, The ďŹ nal logo I designed is above, I kept the smae colours as the creative networks logo as i thought i woul dlook good withonly three colours. The logo look moderatly interesting, however I think if i were to do it again I would make it more detailed and have more or a pattern or maybe included illustrative typography.

Feel Good Brief 1 Brief 4 YCN I chose to do this brief after seeing how speciďŹ c the brief was, I liked how the brief asked speciďŹ cally for the logos and new labels to e placed onto speciďŹ c shaped botles and designs. This made the designing easier and allowed me to focus more on the concept behind the design. I wanted the concept to be based purely on th fact that the company uses no added sugar and everything is natural.

I tried to created a hand rendered looking theme to the products, trying to promote the idea that the drink is good for you and there is nothing false or fake about it. I think the designs look good, but work better when targeted at a younger audience, the designs are also very feminine, so would possibly target a more female audience.

I had regular meetings with the Company to discuss the progress of the branding. After producing Business cards, greetings notes and other forms of printed branding for the company they also asked me to mock us some designs for a website, so that all the new branding matched and was recognisable.

Aisley Financial Branding Brief 5 Ainsley Finance LTD Ainsley Finance is a company in Durham who approached me about doing some branding work for them. The comapny is based in durham and has a target audience of those who want to protect/ save their money. I had to keep the Branding simple so that it apealed to thoses who are already cleints but also to those who had never heard of the company.

Doewe Egberts Brief 6 YCN The Douwe Egberts Brief was probably my favourite brief out of all of them. The brief gave restrictions and speciďŹ c things which had to be included, this once again made the designing fun. I created extra products to go along side the coffee products. I enjoyed creating illustrative patterns to go on the coffee packaging and have tried to work with a style which compliments the brand.

I have designed this new look for Douwe Egberts as when i asked people about what they thought about the brand many people seemed to think it was very traditional in its branding, therefore I wanted to update the look and make it more apealing to a younger audience, The designs i have made are most likely going to apeal to women as they are once agin quite femine. I have used a retro oral patttern and therfore they will probably be less apealing to men .

I really enjoyed doing both briefs for feel good, I felt like i could really used my illustation skills to help me and create something which looks a bit different. I wanted to use the same imagery as before to keep the theme going. Out of al the briefs i think this one is my least favourite as I feel like I rushed it and therefore didnt quite do it to its full potential.

Feel Good Brief 2 Brief 7 YCN The Feel Good brief number 2 was a short extention of brief 1 from feel good. the idea was to create a ‘hype’ about the newly created branding for Feel good or simply to raise awareness of the brand itself. In addition to this the rand wanted to promote the fact that the drink contains no added sugar and is natural and healthy. I used a lot of the imagery which I created in the fist part of the brief to create posters for each type of drink.

Evaluation I think during this module I have improved my organisation skills greatly, towards the beguining of the module, I started and compleated my first project which was the YCN Brief Uk Greetings, this helped me to move on and gave me the confidence, as I knew I could start and finish a brief resonably quickly and to a certain standard. Another thing which I really feel has helped me was working collaborativly, I now feel that I would have the confidence to make more risky design decisions which I wouldnt of had the confidence before. Within this module I have focused a lot more on producing products which I can include illustration in, as I feel that my style has changed since being on the course I wanted to return to a

illustrative style which I used to work well with. Nearly all the projects which I have compleated have been illustrative or had illustrative elements to them. I really struggled after christmas untill march with motivation, and think the fact that I was doing less illustrative and hands on work really effected this. It took a lot to get back into doing these projects, but once I did I think my style ofwork has once again become much more illustrative. I have enjoyed working in this way much more than the previous module. The only project which wasnt illustartive in a way that the others were is the Ainsley rebranding brief, which looks much more corporate, than illustrative but still has illustrative elements to it.

I really enjoyed Making the final product for the Ella’s kitchen brief , It was really fun to make, working in a 3d format is very different from the way in which I would normally work, It would be a way in which I would want to work again. I have loved working more illustratively as well so that will be something i will be doing more in the future. One of my favourite briefs which I have compleated was the Douwe egberts brief as it was vibrant and easy to design around, I am overall pretty pleased with the final profucts for this brief. The Ainsley Rebranding brief was also very eye opening, as I was working for a real company, the designs which I have produced are going to be printed

in june are will be used for the company and their clients, this too has given me confidence in my ability. I have learnt many skills throughout this module such as time management and working to specific timelines, as well as managing several projects at once. Another thing which i have learnt. Overall I have really enjoyed this module, I working to my own time limits and in way which suit my style of work. However I feel that I could maybe of produced more work than If I had started producing briefs earier than I did. As I think I wasted a lot of time towards the beguining of the module only getting on with one project when i could have been doing several.

THE END.
