New skylight system and cladding over the library
PEABODY CONSERVATORY SKYLIGHT Protecting a Historic Library Ziger/Snead Architects +1200 Architectural Engineers Š =HPEIKNA *! Photography by Ulf Wallin The Peabody conservatory’s collection of 300,000 rare and historic volumes was put at risk from a failing skylight. This project replaced the polycarbonate skylight with an insulated glass skylight system. The new skylight is much heavier than the 1878 skylight for which the original structure was designed, making this project a precise surgical operation. 1200 Architectural Engineers meticulously wove a new steel reinforcing system through the old iron structure =J@ @AOECJA@ = OAMQAJ?EJC OUOPAI BKN EJOP=HH=PEKJ that would not over-stress the original structure. Ziger/ Snead was responsible for the exterior envelope detailing to ensure the books would remain dry and that the exterior would appear unchanged.

The forms are created using pleated fabric manipulated using a system of clamps and custom â&#x20AC;&#x153;dress formsâ&#x20AC;? inspired >U ?NEJKHEJA CKSJO KB PDA PD ?AJPQNU O =J EJPANJ & SKNGA@ PK @ARAHKL PDA B=>NE? I=JELQH=PEKJ PA?DJEMQAO used, design and fabricate the armature system, and helped lead the installation team.
