This final year project is being created to present the knowledge I have gained during the past four years at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. It is also a result of all the practical experience I was able to gather within several internships at fashionfreax.net in Berlin, as well as in New York at the designer Jill Stuart and Vogue magazine, which are still inspiring my work until today. Inspiration for this final year project were furthermore an exhibition in the Museum of Enkhuizen of April 2009 and the Huis Marseille with an exhibition on the differnt faces of water. Northern lights is addressing women in their thirties. Rummaging through her closet, you will find haute couture pieces side by side with vintage house frocks. She expresses her eclectic, playful self through a masterful and sometimes outrageous mix of these styles.

Concept

Northern lights for Spring/ Summer 2010 is inspired on Nordic mythology. Northern lights is about a mystic atmosphere that reminds of fables from long time ago. Ceramics of far eastern cultures, The Netherlands and Europe show a long tradition of seafaring, represented in the traditional ancient blue pattern with its Flora Danica designs, that give a lot of inspiration for prints. In terms of tradition we will also be looking at the 17th century, especially in Denmark, where fine undergarments, embroidered with luxurious golden treats were worn under the folklore costumes. These are key factors for a handcrafted atmosphere, a past that we have to recall to our minds and prepare for the future. It is not only about past stories, but it is also about diseases. Some kind of Botox intoxication that we get from the present we are living in.

If colour is a measure of mood then it is a mix of 8

optimism and re-engagement with nature. Colours are calmed down and soft. It is a muted and harmonious colour palette, which ranges from subtle, neutral colours such as biscuit, corn silk and

tender old-fashioned

turquoise through a splash of de-saturated purple and violet. Every now and then appear some

fresh lemon green. Aqua and cobalt blue

as used for the ancient

Blue Fluted pattern of traditional porcelain will be a big statement within the collection.
