INTERLOCKING COURTYARDS Hotel/Apartment/Campus Complex
Courtyards are partially enclosed spaces between buildings or inside buildings. Courtyards are discrete even though they may share air space with the city; let’s not think of them as “threshold spaces” because they are really not part of a continuum or blurred edge. They are edgy and have shape. The project is looking at courtyards to design a mixed-use campus.

Model Kit The model kit is designed classwide looking at courtyard precedent and programs for an animation school. The programs prototype and sizes are broken down and modeled to create a model kit. Program adjacency is also shown in the model kit which helps to inform future design decisions.
Ground to Sky We began our project with a study of a double notched connection system. Two axes at perpendicular angles are lodged into two notches. A handle-like object at one end implies a mechanical tightening motion. The connection system is utilized to interlock and populate the space between ground and sky. Zooming to smaller components, they can be further broken down into smaller parts that fit together with visible seams and fake seams. connection piece

Courtyards The negative space of the sunken courtyards imply motions of the massing as they rotate and slide, carving the ground. As the courtyards, massing and ground interweaves, pedestrians are forced to slow their pace and meager through the site. On the upper floor plan you begin to see all the levels of terraces connecting the massings. The terraces become a courtyard when forms surround it on several sides creating a sense of security. The terrace courtyards sometimes serve circulatory purposes and other times hangout spots and outdoor dining

Through our project, we created courtyards as offsets of designed objects to highlight the idea of seams. The offset usually expands and evolves differently on the two sides, resulting in two distinctly different objects that are in conversation with one another. Both terrace courtyards and sunken courtyards create a sense of enclosure and protection and curate framed views of the city and the sky.

GHETTO FILM INSTITUTE Campus
The studio centers on the design of an urban arts education campus for the organization Ghetto Film School (GFS). The proposed site for the new GFS campus is a large, gently sloping open lot in a neighborhood adjacent to MacArthur Park. The studio considers the architectural potential of horizontally oriented building types that actively engage in concepts of interior/exterior, private/public, and building/ground.

Roof & False Front
The proposal for Ghetto Film School campus is next to MacArthur park which is situated in Los Angeles. When looking at the film school building strategy, I focus on the specific programs that situates in a film school such as large, public spaces like soundstages, theaters and teaching areas like classrooms and tech rooms. Looking at the programs as a group, basic geometries are developed to contain different programs, bounding them together.
A bowstring truss is a structural device commonly used in bridge-building and, less often, in industrial architecture. Used to span wide, column-free spaces, it consists of an arched beam (the bow) joined at each end by a straight beam (the string), with diagonal support beams joining the two. As for the false front development, I am looking at the sections of the truss and developing an open and closing box scheme that is tangent to the truss. The materiality of the false front is polycarbonate which aims to create a semi-translucent effect that one can see through. Aluminum columns support these polycarbonate sheets. Different layers of transparency are achieved.

Courtyards Courtyards are developed as square cut-outs of the roofscape. As the building is a shared campus, public spaces are crucial for the public to engage while not disturbing the teaching areas. The courtyards fulfills such a requirement while allowing more sunlight into the campus.

TENDER TOWERS Micro-unit Housing
The project generates from and challenges the tower typology. Apart from the typical pencil towers that stand alone, the bundle of towers creates a community that is closely connected to one another. At the same time, the brittleness and slenderness quality of the towers forms a new atmospheric landscape that is imposed upon Chinatown. It provides a novel strategy for compact housing.

Units to Towers The project starts with double L unit type. The type is unique since each unit has a double-story height. Two units make a pair and interlock into a cube. Without further space division, the unit functions perfectly with one person’s living, working and sleeping.

Towers to Bundle As the cube grows on its small footprint, it reaches a proportion around 1 to fifteen of width to height. It is the proportion of pencil towers in Manhattan. Each tower has one or two shifting moments as it breaks the linear form. The shifting area transforms into a public common area for all the dwellers. All towers are dependent on one another as they connect and lean on each other, forming a loose ring.Three aperture types swap between towers as they bend and stick. The aperture dictates the towers’ window system.

GAMING ARENA Architecture/Movie
“Starting from the research on thresholds, the project examines various conditions that exist inside of one building. Gaming Arena emerge within these thresholds. The gaming arena is designed to be real and surreal.” Located in downtown Los Angeles, the project is looking at new futures of gaming and its interaction with the city.

Developing from thresholds, programs are attached to them. Thresholds connects the main arena space with other programs that make up a gaming arena. AI drawings are transformed into threshold chuncks which change the condition that people move from one place to another. Drawings analyze the circulation that exist between individual thresholds.

“Circulation grows from there, penetrating the wall while clinging onto it. Extending in three dimensions. Stretching the apertures. Creeping into different programs and connecting them.”
“The opening of the site is embraced to create entrances, which sits on the axes parallel to the streets. Everything else is elevated. Paths are tangling. As disoriented as can be, they generate the possibility for scattered seatings. Shared and private experience of gaming are both included. Everything is placed in the parts that were divided by the threshold chunks. Eventually, the order of the architecture is determined by two FAT FAT walls.”
36
DESIGN STUDIO 2B “Merging into a mass, the monumental wall is erecting at the middle of the site. The front is isolated by the enclosed and the wall. People travel on the ribbon-like catwalks, in and out, out and in. There is too much exposed but too little revealed. Too much that the wall can be almost seen through; Too little that nothing is clear from the outside. Pieces of clues are hidden behind, or, within the wall.”
“Thresholds are intertwined to allow different types of movement in both plan and section. In various directions and sometimes loop back. Circulation organizes programs and blurs the boundary between the public and private. Two systems intrude each other, but the independence remains intact.”

CATIA-ENGINE OF CREATION Coding/Modeling/Sculpting
This seminar looks at a particular design process that deals with complex form and innovative systems. This seminar focuses on the use of CATIA as idea generator and as a tool capable of creating intelligent digital constructs containing evolving geometrical relationships that ultimately lead to the emergence of behavioral patterns. The project started off with a powercopy, to a sculpture, and to a shelter.

AS CATIA: ENGINES OF CREATION
CHAPTER I: Powercopy CHAPTER I: Powercopy
The powercopy is instantiated using multiple variables. The variables determine the powercopy’s height, lengths and offsets. The inputs: the origin point, a horizontal line and a vertical line determine the grid of the field.
CHAPTER II: Drapery Solid The geometry is created through the imagine and shape tool in CATIA. The final geometry is composed of three individual pieces that lays on top of one another. They act like drapery and are squezzed and deformed.

The Shelter is is situated on a 5m*5m*10m site. The site is carved out by the scupture and re-closed with different surfaces. Powercopies of the wing geometry is imposed on the site, forming 2 layers of canopy. The shelter is designed as one person’s creation studio. The middle enclosed place is for living and sleeping while the 2 hubs are for socializing and artistic creation.

In Leviathan, the kitchen is the room that the characters spend the most time in, and it is the first room of the home that we see demolished. The scene to be filled with natural light, coming from the destroyed wall, which would highlight and reflect off of the glass bottles, dishes and windows. Compositionally, this would demonstrate a point of tension between the violent act of destruction, and the fragility of the home.
